Textile Majors

Theres a special magic in hand made fabric items. Handmade items in general, yes, but specifically fabric items.

There are two aspects to this. One is the level of relationship between the artist and the recipient. The knitted beanie purchased off Etsy is going to be nowhere near as powerful as the Fair Isle sweater your grandmother made specifically for you.

The other is the level of involvement of the artist. The more involved the artist is in the creation, the more powerful it is. That quilt made from store bought fabric, pieced together and quilted with protection symbols, it will keep you safe. The gloves whose yarn came from sheep you raised, whose dye came from berries picked from plants you tended and nourished, sheared and cleaned and dyed and spun and knitted by your hands, those will save your life.

Textile art majors come to the school knowing the basics of their craft. They can knit a sweater, or sew a dress, or started with those little bracelet looms and now are never found without some sort of weaving project. They come, because they want more. The history of the art, the depth and fullness of it. They come because they want to be fashion designers, or because they want to be conservators at museums. They come, with their portable sewing machines and card tables to stand them on, with their knitting needles and crochet hooks, their looms and embroidery hoops and infinite boxes of fabric, fiber, yarn, threads and notions, pins and sewing needles, measuring tapes and rulers. Their bags are full of pattern books and their rooms are cluttered with their projects.

They’ll go on, those that succeed, to be the top of their fields, whatever they choose to do. They’ll credit their blessings on their time at Elsewhere, the lessons they learned and the influences they found.

Items made at Elsewhere have a special power. While all handmade items absorb some of the emotion and intentions the artist has while creating it, items made at Elsewhere take those feelings and make them magical. This can be a blessing, or a curse. There is a tradition of burning projects that frustrate too much. Every Freshman is shocked and appalled when, at the new moon, all the older textile majors gather together to burn any project that is causing them problems or resulting in negative feelings. They learn, after their first or second frustrating project causes them such discomfort after they make it that they can’t actually use the thing.

The professors prioritize quality over quantity for a reason. New projects are always assigned at the start of the waxing moon, and due before the new moon. They have a special form for projects that have to be redone because they were burned. They will provide the materials and time to make up the projects, but only three times. Some will offer deals for a fourth.

Gifts are a mixed blessing.

That one sophmore that knits six pairs of socks every weekend? She’s avoiding calls from her parents and they’re full of her anxiety. The one person that wore them ended up running like the hunt was after them until they collapsed sobbing in the quad. Now, we accept her gifts, and put them away. They’re be useful for trade with the Folk.

The boy from the equatorial country who weaves those lovely blankets? Only use them in the depths of winter, or you’ll roast. Take the blanket with you if you have to go out in the deep snowy areas for ANY reason. They’ll keep you warm and dry. It may look as light as your sheets, but he started making them in his first winter here, when he thought he’d freeze to death for sure. Now he jokes that they’re a brilliant ice breaker.

The person that ignored the proverbial ‘boyfriend curse,’ made xir boyfriend a sweater, then begged him to wear it. Nobody knows exactly what happened to him, but xe is so much happier now, since he disappeared.

There are legacy students here, whose tools came down from their parents and grandparents, you’ll know them by their iron needles and hooks, and the runes carved in their old looking looms and hoops. The items they make are often high quality, even as freshmen, and they know the ways of trading. We’ve all learned to look for them when having an issue with a project, they have a way of getting to the heart of it and guiding us through. Trades with them will be dear, but what you get will be worth it.

The senior project is a group affair. Every senior contributes something they’ve made. The fabric is made by students talented with the loom, the lace by the best crocheter in the class. Every piece is made by students, from the earliest bud of cotton or flax, the hand raised lambs, goats, rabbits or alpacas, to the final glass bead. Each year the product is different, but the ritual is the same. At the final full moon before graduation, the product is displayed on the quad, surrounded with flowers and hand made accessories. Nobody knows what happens to it after that. It disappears before dawn, and the artists go out in the world to make their fortunes. Only once has the project met the light of the morning sun, and that class never saw any success.

Free Crochet Pattern: chubby striped bear amigurumi (and bunny!)

Alright, time for a new crochet pattern! This time it’s for this cute little striped bear, which is actually a revamp of an old pattern from maybe 5 years ago.

Unfortunately I can’t find any pictures of it, but this new version is way cuter anyway!!

I made 2 different critters with this pattern & they’re identical except for color changes and the ears. Let’s get started!

Dream Pillow to remember Prophetic Dreams

Hello lovelies! Been awhile, I wanted to give you guys this recipe/spell I created for a friend to enhance her dream memory! I know a lot of people struggle with remembering dreams, and that’s ok! I am here to try and help!

You will need some fabric and a sewing kit for starters!

-Sandalwood Powder: Visionary Properties

-Peppermint: Psychic awareness and Intuition

-Hawthorne Berries: Protection of witches

-Blood Salt: To protect yourself, and have the ability to defend yourself from any negativity that may try and harm you in these dreams.

-Purple, purple, purple!: Add some purple yarn, tissue paper, or fabric on the inside to help with opening your third eye (Purple is most commonly associated with your third eye, I’ve learned:)

-Amethyst: Once again, to help with your third eye and visionary properties beyond our realm/spirit work. (If you are hoping for channeling, I would substitute amethyst with a piece of fluorite…but that’s just me:)

-Sigil(s): I created a personal sigil for this friend, stemming from, “I will remember my dreams”. I find it stronger to make your own personal sigil when making these pillows for your self.

-Sage: I always add sage for positivity, cleansing, and protection.

The pillow doesn’t have to be huge, the ones we make are relatively small, maybe 2x2 in (After sewn). I start off by folding the fabric in half, and I sew along two sides only, while the fabric is inside out (The pattern that you want on the outside needs to be on the inside so you can create a clean seam). Once both sides are done, I turn it back so the pattern or color is on the outside (I recommend purple) and start stuffing! I go in this order,

Tissue paper, sigil (folded up), Sandalwood powder, peppermint, Hawthorne berry, blood salt, Amethyst, and sage.

If you don’t have some of these items, feel free to substitute them with items you have that you personally feel would work best for you. Our correspondences may be different, and one thing that may work for me, may not work for you. Mix it up!

As I sew the pillow shut, I say the following

“May _________ see what they need to see

May _________ know what they need to know

May _________ fight what they need to fight

May this help ___________’s senses grow”

If this is for you, replace the spaces with I, and the last with my.

Then to finish off, I recommend smudging these pillows with Cedar or sage. Personally, I use this sage spray a friend of mine got me, and it does wonders!

I charge these pillows by simply sleeping with them the very first night I create them. I put them under my pillow right away and then that’s that! Its good to smudge them beforehand, or after if you have any negative dreams.

As far as the sigil goes, I do not charge the sigil in the pillow. I draw the sigil first, and put the original in a bowl with some quartz points and selenite, then I draw a second one and put that in the pillow right away. I leave the original sigil in the bowl overnight, and then add it to my collection the next day:)

I hope you all enjoyed this, please reblog to share with others, and follow/like if you wanna see more! :)

Lots of unconditional love,

The entire castle was gathered in the courtyard awaiting to celebrate the arrival of King Negan. He had been gone for three months destroying a herd of unholy creatures that had decimated villages on the outskirts of a neighboring kingdom, feeding off the living, leaving nothing but mangled corpses for scavengers to feast upon. Negan had ridden off with his Saviors to rid the world of these monsters they called walkers.

Queen Gwendolyn’s back ached as she stood. They had been gathered for what seemed like hours ever since their banners had been spotted along the horizon. Negan probably loved making all his subjects wait, sadistic man that he was. Finally, the trumpets sounded as they rode through the gate.

Although she knew her husband and his knights were the most fearsome of warriors, she had worried for him while he was gone. She had not had any communication from him since he left. No letters. No notes. Nothing but a messenger sent to ride ahead a few days ago to herald their return. The concern she had once felt for him was quickly overpowered by fear.

She discreetly tugged at the neckline of her blue bodice. Even though she had let her dresses out, her breasts strained against the fabric. She clasped her hands in front of her hoping her long belled sleeves would cover the evidence of her secret since her skirts no longer hid the small tell-tale curve of her abdomen where the next heir of the kingdom grew. Whispers were spreading, but still, she had not announced the joyous news.

brie-art  asked:

I have a character with autism who knits. I was thinking that she knitted as a form of stimming (both the actual motion and stroking the finished fabric). I decided that she also had sensory issues with clothing. Would it make sense for her to knit/sew her own clothing so she can control the material, size, and placement/lack of seams? (She's still going to do it, but should she think of it as an 'autism thing'?) Also what kind of material/fiber is most common for people to prefer?

It does make sense for her to do this, and she may or may not see this as an “autism thing” - not everyone analyses all their actions and groups them by whether or not they are “autism things” (although some people do find comfort in finding that even if they are not like their allistic peers, there is an explanation for some of these differences).

In general, autistic people who need sensory-friendly clothing prefer clothing to be soft. Itchy wool and chunky knits against the skin are likely to be Bad. Your character is likely to prefer fabrics that have with a close knit or weave, or which have been treated to increase their softness (like brushed cotton). She may have to do a lot of trial-and-error in order to find fabrics and yarns that are suitable for her. She may have to consider other issues such as the placement of buttons, the width of her necklines and the tightness of her sleeves. She may purposefully choose some clothes which are tight to give her a sense of deep-pressure, but this has to be balanced with the feel and placement of her clothing’s hems.

Remember that making one’s own clothes takes a lot of work, and it requires a good level of skill. She would probably need to have a fair amount of experience before she was able to make clothes that had small, soft seams (so that they are better than what she could easily buy commercially). For knitted fabrics that come into direct contact with her skin, she would probably be better off ones which are machine knitted rather than hand knitted (because you can produce fabrics that have a very close knit and use very fine yarns), but she may combine this with wearing hand knitted garments, or garments that incorporate several types of fabric. Alternatively, she might only make clothes if she cannot find a commercially available alternative.

Question spam! Are all the different types called rooks? Are they only real animals, no dragons or unicorns? What about insects or spiders? You mentioned wounds and the cats having bandages because of 9 lives, are they spirits? Is Jock and Hunk the only two-headed one? Don't feel like you have to answer all this 😛

These are all so wonderful, thank you for asking, it’s really nice to get the thoughts I’ve had out in writing for you guys ;v; 💓

1. Yes!!! Rooks are their species. There are obviously different types of Rooks, but they all are Rooks. So take Doll, he’s not a Cat Rook, nuu he’s just a Rook. There’s no division, they’re just one race.

ALTHOUGHHHHH, Fun Fact: When I started working with Doll himself, I was originally planning on making Rooks only feline based! And not only that, the Rooks would have had their types based off of the type of wound dressings they had! Doll has bandaging on his arm, as well as a tail that resemble Ribbon! So Doll would have been a Ribbon Rook :3 Other types consisted of Button, Zipper, Thread, Velcro, Yarn, Needle, and Fabric Rooks! This concept was dropped only because of design issues, and I really wanted to do more than just one animal species omg 💨

and another Fun Fact!!! Rooks were only called Rooks because they were all supposed to have a black base with a pop of color (Like Doll and Stud’s designs) because a Rook is actually a crow! and crows are black :3 The name kinda stuck, so there you go ✨I was too infatuated with lots of colors to really just keep it the same all throughout /////

Anywayyyy to keep going…

2. Absolutely not! All creatures, including insects, marine and avian animals, prehistoric or fantasy creatures, are bases for a Rooks design if you want it too! I haven’t had the moment to make other body types 💦 but they’re feasible as well :3 Rooks don’t have to be just bipedal creatures, they can look like centaurs, have spider leggies or mermaid tails, however you’d like, just as long as there’s an animal like trait that they’re base off of!

 3. Honestly, I haven’t quite figured that one out, but I’d just put it as Felines being the most mystical of the species. Like they’d be the cryptids of Rook culture, but it’s still something natural?? Doll floats around all he wants and no one bats an eye, its just a societal acceptance, Hunk and Jock have two fucking heads, Looker’s got a few more eyes on his face, no big deal. Totally not cause cats are my favorite ///////

But the nine lives thing stands, feline looking Rooks tend to have the most wounds, these wounds come from past life trauma (the equivilant of the human version where scars and birthmarks are symbols of how you died, yada yada). So Doll was beheaded at one point and that doesn’t phase him pff 💨 Jock probably had his tongue cut out and Hunk got an eyeball plucked. But wounds of course are not limited to felines of course, it’s just the pure AMOUNT sometimes.

BUT!!! Bandaging is limited to felines! The bandaging of a body part would refer to the loss of that body part. Doll’s past life could have had their arm and half if their leg taken off, but Doll still acquired those parts when some other Rook who’s not based feline would not have those parts to begin with.

So kinda going off topic, but I don’t think Rooks ever truly die, they only would when wounds are so extensive that there’s literally no body left to pass on. Then I guess they’d become spirits :3

and finally 4. Nope!!! But!! Polycephaly is a rare thing, it’s not every day you see Rooks who have a few heads on their shoulders, but again, nothing is shamed or made fun of, monsters don’t give a damn about looks and I think that’s wonderful <3333 So Jock and Hunk aren’t the only ones in the world with two heads on one body, they’re proud of themselves and their past life, whatever happened there gave them each other and that’s all they really care about 🐯🐱

Oh goshhhhh, that was so much fun writing, I really appreciate you asking me all of those questions, bby, it really helps me document things, I love it 💖 Please ask me any more questions if you’d like, I’m all ears

Study Atmosphere

As the start of a new school year approaches (or has already started) many people create goals to get better grades and be more involved in school. But, a lot of the time the people who set those goals (like me) give up on them before the first quarter of the school year ends. For me, it’s easy to study in school but not at home; so I’ve decided to rearrange my room for the new school year. Here are some tips!

  • Declutter
    • What to throw out
      • unneeded papers
      • pens/ markers with no ink
      • random sticky notes (trust me, they are everywhere)
      • wrappers
      • anything  broken that cannot be fixed soon/ immediately
      • scraps such as yarn, paper, fabric etc.
    • What not to throw out
      • old notes from difficult subject
      • vocabulary cards
      • anything blank or empty
      • notebooks with a lot of blank paper
      • old tests that have okay/bad grades
        • This is very important because many tests/ assessments can be used to study with. Wrong answers look different every time you look at them. As you go over tests, it becomes more evident where you messed up and can be used to guide you away from that mistake.

I sorta cleaned out my room completely and got rid of so much stuff, it’s really nice to go through everything until I only have what I need. I find that it makes me feel more put together.

  • Move around furniture
    • this is pretty self-explanatory
    • I did it so most of my furniture was on one side of my room so there was an empty wall right in front of my bed, making my room feel slightly bigger
  • Accessorize (sorta)
    • paint your room
      • soft/pastel colors tend to calm people down, while loud, and bold colors  (red and the rest) don’t really do that
    • change your bedding
      • blankets, sheets, pillows, the whole thing. Just remember, unless you’re really into doing your bed every day, don’t make it too complicated because a messy bed makes the entire room look messy.
    • make/ buy little trinkets or art pieces
      • it should make you feel comfortable
    • take down/ put up old or new posters or wall art
      • I have a ton of posters and decided to take them down to make my room feel bigger, I sorta miss them, but I like the way my room looks now.
    • mirrors
      • mirrors reflect light (duh) and make your room feel a lot bigger, the more mirrors the better, but not too much where it becomes a safety hazard
    • get good lighting
      • lights are also a great way to help motivate you to do things, a lot of light will make you feel more active, when very little light will create more of a sleepy atmosphere.
