anonymous asked:

Hey! so i'm new to comics but one of my favorite tv shows when i was younger had them on it andi just reallly love them and want to know more about them can you recommend some good comics?

Hello, and welcome to the fandom!

You weren’t specific on which characters you want to read more about, so I’ll tell you my favorite books for all of those that have been on cartoons:

Magneto: the current Magneto solo series, Magneto Testament, Magneto: Not a Hero, X-Men: Fatal Attractions, X-Men vs Avengers.

Scarlet Witch: Avengers Vol. 3 and Uncanny Avengers

Quicksilver: X-Factor Vol. 1All-New X-Factor, and Avengers Academy

Polaris: also X-Factor Vol. 1, and All-New X-Factor.

One book that involves all four of them (mostly Magneto, but the rest are also there) is the Civil War: House of M AU limited series. For Quicksilver + the Scarlet Witch, I recommend this one-shot retelling their origins, plus Avengers Vol. 1 #16-#31, if you have the patience for 60’s comics.

There’s also Wiccan and Speed, the Scarlet Witch’s children, and Luna, Quicksilver’s daughter. I’m afraid I don’t have many recs for Luna, as writers tend to forget her existence, except for Son of M, which was a terrible series for Pietro, but one of the times Luna was well-written (also the recent FF, but, tbh, she barely even appears in it). For Speed and Wiccan, I recommend Alan Heinberg’s run on Young Avengers, plus Children’s Crusade, that has some nice character moments for nearly the whole family.

Where to start reading Scott Summers?

 • Giant Size X-Men #1
 • Uncanny X-Men #114, 122, 126, 129-138, 143, 150, 154, 168, 174-175
 • X-Men And Alpha Flight #1
 • Uncanny X-Men #197, 201, 398
 • X-Factor #1, 7-8, 13, 27, 35, 53, 66-68

Hello! I hope this isn't a bother, and if you don't have time to answer this/don't want to I totally understand. But I see that you read comics and I was wondering if maybe you could rec some good titles/arc's with Scarlet Witch in them? I don't know much about her, but with Age of Ultron coming up I'd like to read some stuff with her (and Quicksilver) in it. Thank you so much! I hope you have a really lovely day!

Hey! No bother at all :)

Scarlet Witch is one of my favourites if not the favourite, so I’ll try to help you out here as much as I can i need someone to cry with about Wanda.

Let’s start: as you may already know, Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch is a mutant with a ton of raw power. Depending on what you read, her powers range from telekinesis and simple spell casting (hexes) to alteration of probabilities and even reality itself. The origins of her powers are sometimes based on her mutant genes, other times casued by her link with an Eldder God named Chthon who’s been mooning her since birth (planned to use her as a vessel at some point), which would have given her the ability to perform magic. It depends on the comic.

She is the daugter of long-time Professor X’s nemesis/frenemy Magneto (also known as Erik Lehnsherr or Magnus Maximoff) and has a twin brother, Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver, who is also a mutant with super-speed powers and molecular acceleration. Their mother, Magda, is believed to have been human and is currently deceased. The twins are often despicted as having been raised by a gypsy couple in Transia.

The relationship the twins have with their father is strained at best, since Magneto has manipulated them multiple times (especially during their stunt at being evil during their days at the Brotherhood Evil Mutants, while they didn’t know he was their father) and used them as weapons acting like the sociopath he’s written as 99% of the time. There’s a lot, and I mean A LOT of angst in this family.

You could go back to 1964 for the twin’s first appearance in X-Men as a part of their father’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, but their characters don’t get much development until they join the Avengers. Since then, Wanda’s been a recurrent character in the Avengers, been lovers with some of them and married fellow avenger Vision (they are currently divorced).

Now, you have to keep something in mind: Wanda is a very, very powerful mutant (been called nexus being of the Universe a couple of times) and as such she is quite dangerous. She’s been targeted quite a few times by villains to be used for her reality wrapping powers and has had her fair share of emotional trauma. She is not stable, not her mind, not her emotions, not even her powers which fluctuate a lot.

At one point she had twin boys (thanks to her powers) with Vision (who is an android), and then poof, all good is gone, for they are shards of the fractured soul of Mephisto (a demonic entity).

A lot of things happen, a lot of people die, her mind and powers are tampered with, Vision and Wanda split and then reunite, they erase Wanda’s memories of her children.

The story(ies) from the last two paragraphs can be found mainly in West Coast Avengers and The Avengers: Once an avenger/Fata Morgana/Prisoners a love story/New Alliances/Assembled/Chaos&Theroy. To be honest I never quite liked all this backstory and that’s why I summarized it, but that’s just me. It should suffice to be able to follow the most recent stories and basically understand what’s going on.

Now for the rec list in itself. I’m going to try and make some chronological sense. I have two basic recommendations:

 • Avengers Dissassembled

You ever get that feeling that something is off, that you are forgetting something important? Well, Wanda sure did here, since the memory of her children had been taken from her to keep her somewhat stable. Scarlet Witch goes in search for answers and a lot of people die, which is the set up for…

 • House of M

My absolute favourite. Everyone is scared of Wanda and they are right to be: she’s lost her mind. As the super-powered discuss whether or not she should be put down (like a rabid dog, I swear, this one will make you cry) the expected happens and all of reality is rewritten. Something happens in this arc that will have far-reaching effects in all of the Marvel Universe. There’s a lot of Maximoff drama in this one.

Branching out from these two, you can go with:

 • Decimation

This deals with the direct aftermath of House of M and that something that will mark the MU. If you’re a fan of the X-Men and general mutant-hood you should give it a go. Wanda is not around to be seen, it’s just collateral damage of HoM.

 • Children’s Crusade

If you read Young Avengers (which by all means you should) you will inevitably end up here and be grateful you did. After HoM, Wanda goes missing. This is the unfolding story of how both Avengers and Young Avengers search for her (both groups for very different reasons).

 • Avengers vs. X-Men

I know. You read that and thought oh hell no I’ve had enough emotional damage for the rest of my life, there’s no way I’m reading how my babies go and beat each other up. And you’d be right, it can hurt something fierce but hear me out.

The Phoenix Force comes back to Earth, but since Jean’s not there, the new vessel/messiah is not ready/avaiable (i don’t quite remember atm), and apparently it won’t go for the Cuckoos (Phoenix Warsong) or ressurrect Jean Grey yet again (Phoenix Endsong or really any X-Men comic every 6 months it would seem), it splits in five and now you have 5 new shiny Phoenixes.

Lots of turmoil, lots of drama, your faves beating up your faves and Wanda+Hope kinda saving the day. I really like this arc, it always felt a bit like redemption for HoM.

I highly recommend giving X-Men: Messiah Complex a shot if you want to read Avs.X-Men and know where all of this messiah thing is coming from (Wanda’s mentioned in it but doesn’t appear as far as I recall), but to summarize, after HoM the bad thing that happens stops something and this messiah (Hope Summers, light of my life) is a symbol of it being quickstarted again. I’m sorry if this is too cryptic, but I’d like to keep as much of the plot a surprise as I can in case you have not read anything on it yet.

So the final order if you have the resources, time and will to go with it would be:

 1. Avengers Dissassembled
 2. House of M
 3. Decimation
 4. X-Men: Messiah Complex
 5. Young Avengers/Avengers: Children’s Crusade
 6. Avengers vs. X-Men

After all that, you can try out Uncanny Avengers, which is where Wanda’s spending most of her time these days and where everything goes terribly wrong in #14 but that’s a story for another day.

 • Avengers Origins: Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch

Not essential but good if you want to get your hands on some Maximoff Twins feelings.

So that’s is basically it! Beyond that I’m afraid I can’t help you. I know very little about Wanda in other Universes like Marvel Zombies or Noir. I’ve read some Ultimate Avengers, but I didn’t really like it and didn’t follow, and I’ve read one of the What If?s where the events from Avengers Dissassembled weren’t really Wanda’s fault but
Captain America’s
, but those are not really substantial or relevant to the main universe (not sure if it was one of the What If?s, gotta check).

I hope this helped! You’re more than welcome to go off anon (or stay in anon, your choice) and discuss Wanda with me please somebody discuss Wanda with me oh god, I’m so happy she’s getting the spotlight these days, she deserves it :’)
