WWE Extreme Rules from the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois.

When Chris Jericho made his return to the WWE in early 2012, we were treated to cryptic segments, as well as a promise that it was about to be the end of the world as we know it. While Jericho failed to be the last man standing in the Royal Rumble that year, he was about to reveal the issue that had been bugging him since his return, claiming one man in particular was stealing the Fozzy frontman’s thunder and a moniker at the same time….

From the moment CM Punk dropped his famous “Pipebomb” on Raw in June, 2011, the term of “the Best in the World” had been attached to the WWE Champion’s name. Jericho felt Punk was trying to emulate him, since Jericho was “the Best in the World at what I do”. While the two traded insults, they were also booked to face off, first in an Elimination Chamber, which Punk won, but Jericho was unable to finish the match due to being knocked out. The 2nd bout took place at Wrestlemania XXVIII, where Punk forced Jericho to tap to the Anaconda Vice.

It wouldn’t end there though, and this time, Jericho would take it to a personal level, taking a shot at Punk’s lifestyle, especially the fact that the WWE Champion was Straight Edge. While on the UK tour, Jericho claimed he had spotted Punk heading to a pub in London for an alcoholic drink. The following weeks, a bottle of Jack Daniels would be smashed over Punk’s head, and he’d even be forced to take a sobriety test. This was done to get under Punk’s skin, and earn Jericho another shot at the WWE Championship. But while he got his wish, it would be in Punk’s backyard of Chicago….in a Chicago Street Fight!

So here it is in full, as CM Punk puts the WWE Championship on the line against Chris Jericho in a Chicago Street Fight at Extreme Rules!

When Chris Jericho made his return to the WWE in 2012, it took a few weeks and some cryptic segments before the penny dropped on why he returned. To target a superstar Jericho felt was trying to claim a title of his….

Since WWE Champion, CM Punk dropped his famous Raw pipebomb, the “Best in the World” moniker stuck with him. Which Jericho claimed Punk was trying to emulate him, seeing as Jericho referred to himself as “the best in the world at what I do”. Jericho would get 2 shots at CM Punk’s title, the first at Elimination Chamber ending when Punk knocked Jericho out with a kick, the 2nd seeing Punk successfully retain at Wrestlemania XXVIII.

Jericho wouldn’t let this rest though, and would go on the offense both physically and verbally, using Punk’s “Straight Edge” lifestyle to antagonise him. Jericho would claim he had seen Punk go for a drink at an English pub, smash a bottle of Jack Daniels on Punk, and demand a sobriety test. All this would rile Punk, and lead to Jericho getting another title shot. This time in Punk’s own backyard of Chicago, as they’d be booked in a Chicago Street Fight.
