Send me a word and two characters

[So this is something I put together for the fanfiction workshop I taught last week. The concept is shamelessly ripped off that other prompt post with the unusual words, and the words themselves are shamelessly harvested from all those “words that are impossible to translate into English” lists. I just collected the ones I thought were cool.]

  • toska (Russian)  a dull ache of the soul, a longing with nothing to long for
  • mamihlapinatapei (Yagan)  the wordless, yet meaningful look shared by two people who both desire to initiate something but are both reluctant to start
  • jayus (Indonesian)  a joke so poorly told and so unfunny that one cannot help but laugh
  • fernweh (German)  being homesick for a place you’ve never been
  • tartle (Scottish)  the act of hestitating while introducing someone because you’ve forgotten their name
  • cafuné (Brazillian Portuguese)  the act of tenderly running one’s fingers through someone’s hair
  • mokita (New Guinean)  the truth everyone knows but nobody says
  • wabi-sabi (Japanese)  finding beauty within the imperfections of life and accepting peacefully the natural cycle of growth and decay
  • dépaysement (French)  the feeling that comes from not being in one’s home country
  • schadenfreude (German)  the feeling of pleasure at seeing another’s misfortune
  • tingo (Pascuense)  the act of taking objects one desires from the house of a friend by gradually borrowing all of them
  • l'appel du vide (French)  the instinctive urge to jump from high places
  • embasan (Maguindanaoan)  to wear clothes while taking a bath
  • duende (Spanish)  the mysterious power that a work of art has to deeply move a person
  • saudade (Portuguese)  the feeling of longing for something or someone that you love and which is lost
  • boketto (Japanese)  the act of gazing vacantly into the distance without thinking
  • hygge (Danish)  the pleasant, genial, and intimate feeling associated with sitting around a fire in the winter with close friends
  • pochemuchka (Russian)  a person who asks too many questions
  • packesel (German)  the person who’s stuck carrying everyone else’s bags on a trip
  • ayurnamat (Inuit)  the philosophy that there is no reason to worry about the things that can’t be changed
  • cavoli riscaldati (Italian)  the result of attempting to revive an unworkable relationship
Alaska/Far Northern Gothic

You had a neighbor yesterday. You’re sure of it, but when you walk the trail between your properties there’s no sign of their house. You recall their faces, but not their names. The distance between you and the next nearest living human continues to grow.

On the longest night of the year, you wake at midnight to a high noon sun. Its blinding light renders the snow a featureless, glimmering white. You cannot even see the trees.

You visit Barrow for Nalukataq and are invited to participate in the blanket toss. When you come back down, there is no one to catch you.

You open the windows.  Pile snow on your bed. Allow icicles to form on your ceiling. It is still too hot to sleep.

You spy a raven near the grocer’s with an eyeball in its beak. You tell yourself that it must be the scavenged remains of some animal. It couldn’t be human. It couldn’t be your own.

You come back from the outhouse to find the door to your cabin locked. You see movement through the window. You live alone.

When the snow finally melts, you find something that you lost years ago. In another state. Another life. It is something you hoped to never find again.

The river in Nenana has been frozen for years. The Ice Classic continues to pool their bets, leading more and more people to pay in with the hope that this year it won’t roll over. The year passes. There is still no sign of spring.

This year’s Iditarod winner harnessed wolves instead of dogs. They froth at the mouth and drip blood from long fangs. No one but you seems to notice.

Your roommate brushes her teeth and spits out blood. She looks thin, almost gaunt, even though she’s been eating constantly for the last week. It occurs to you that you haven’t seen her boyfriend around lately. She smiles. Her teeth are sharp and cold.

Late one night, you whistle at the aurora. The last thing you hear is the aurora whistling back.

Um... fic title. I actually suck at those. Death's Harbinger. That's mine; you can't have it, FYI. XD

You know what, I’m dipping into one of my old, mostly-untouched fandoms for this one.
You know K Project, right?

What if the Red King only realized that he was going to die in the middle of the final fight with the Blue King? A short snippet.

Writer meme! WIP edition!

Yay! I got tagged by the ever so lovely @amethystinawrites, and I’ve been trying to mull this over since! I have so many projects and WIPs, omggggggg…! I’m getting better at finishing things but I’m still better at starting them.

Anyway! Have a couple of WIPs from my current active projects! There’ll be both fanfics and some “original” works (aka works featuring RP-characters between me and friends), and I’m gonna start with the original ones. Gonna be a long one, tho, foiks, because apparently I can’t keep things short. So hold onto your seatbelts, and look under the cut ;)

I tag: @alkizen, @sassynightcat, @totallyfrandom, @katastrophy, @oneamongathousand
