A friend of my mums is making a woven wrap for the baby - how gorgeous is it?! I didn’t realise how much work was involved! Love the colours and the pattern - this pic really doesn’t do it justice. It’ll be 5 metres once finished, so should allow for lots of different wrap configurations. I can’t wait til its finished and I can start practicing!
Infants do not cry to upset you. They don’t have a concept of hurting others and they don’t have any reason to want to do so.
Infants do not have any other way of communicating distress or an unmet need. They do not have a choice about crying.
Do not ever yell at, shake, or punish an infant. They will not learn from this – but they will be upset and afraid and possibly harmed, either in the moment or via problems in brain development.
It’s okay to take a minute to set an infant down and go into a
quiet room if you are having a hard time staying calm and comforting,
and come back when you have more self-control.
The only way to get an infant to cry less is to meet their needs. If
you spend a lot of time with infants you can actually learn to notice
when they need something, before they cry about it at all. Most infants
show signs of discomfort, hunger, or having a full/wet diaper, before
they get upset enough to cry.
Infants whose needs aren’t
usually met right away may learn to cry immediately. Regularly not
responding to an infant’s crying teaches the infant to panic every time
they need something, and the trauma of being so afraid so often as an
infant can cause issues with healthy brain develoment.
If a baby is crying, they need something.
Is their nappy/diaper clean and dry? Even if it’s just wet, it should be changed right away.
Are they hungry? A quick way to check is to run your finger over their mouth and see if they try to grab it with their lips.
Do they have air bubbles? You may be able to tell if this is the problem by feeling the infant’s tummy for unusual firmness.
Infants need to be burped right after they eat to help them get
rid of air bubbles that may get trapped and cause discomfort. If it’s
been little while since they last ate, it may be more effective to lay
the infant on their back and move their legs in a bicycle motion.
Are they too warm/cold? Touch the infant’s hands and feet to see if they need more or fewer coverings.
Are they overstimulated?
If it’s too noisy/bright or they’re being touched by too any people,
etc., they may need to be held by one calm person with a blanket over
their head. Like most people, infants tend to get more easily
overstimulated when tired.
Are they able to breathe freely? Infants cannot blow their own nose. A nasal aspirator is an inexpensive tool you can use to help them clear nasal congestion.
Are they in pain? When
an infant is sick or otherwise in pain, it may be beneficial to give
them pain medication formulated for infants, such as baby tylenol.
Always follow the instructions on the bottle and consult a doctor or
pharmacist with any questions.
If a cold doesn’t start to improve within a few days or the infant seems to be in pain but you don’t know why, consult a doctor. The infant may have colic, silent reflux or other issues which can sometimes be treated.
If the infant is more than a couple months old, they may be teething. Baby tylenol will still help but a numbing paste, like orajel, on their gums may be more effective. They may also need teething toys to chew on or a cold wet (clean) washcloth.
Do they just need reassurance? Infants like being sung to, murmured to, and soothed with rhythmic “shhh”-ing. Calm and steady sounds help reassure them that they aren’t alone and help them relax.
Another way to comfort an infant is to bounce them gently and rhythmically in your arms, and/or pat their back rhythmically.
Some infants, including most newborns, may need to be swaddled. A tight swaddle helps the infant feel secure and warm. Ask a doctor, nurse, parent, or YouTube to show you how to do a proper swaddle.
Do they need to be held? The
need for touch is the need most often ignored. Infants are significantly
more likely to thrive with lots and lots of skin-to-skin contact. They
also just need to be held, in general, a lot of the time.
held (especially with skin to skin contact but even without it) helps
the infant release hormones necessary for healthy brain
development. Being close enough to feel an adult’s steady heartbeat is
calming and beneficial for an infant.
For these reasons and many
others, infants need to be held - a lot. Our closest primate relatives
maintain constant physical contact with their babies for the first year
of life. Historically most humans have lived communally, which allows several people to take turns providing the necessary physical contact.
Infants don’t need to be held every single moment, but the more they are held, the safer and more secure they’ll feel and the more likely they are to be healthy. A sling, baby wrap, or wearable infant carrier can help an infant get necessary contact time.
If an infant needs contact to sleep, consider getting a cosleeper cushion to safely allow you or someone else to sleep next to the infant. If that isn’t possible, sleep training where you pick up and comfort the baby each time they cry, and then put them down slightly sooner each time that night, may help.
Do not let an infant cry and cry for help and not give it to them.

Ned Stark had always been a very kind and gentle man. On a particularly rough stormy night where the wind was so powerful and people struggled to walk through it, Ned was just returning home from a particularly long travel to a place where the disputes had turned from aggressive confrontation to bloody and gruesome battles, Ned had been instructed by King Robert to dissolve the quarrel and quickly, when he had heard the wails of a baby. Ned suddenly became more alert to his surroundings. As he dismounted his horse, he began to search for the cause for the sound. Ned soon located the sound to find the small baby wrapped very scarcely in a couple of woven blankets. How could anyone leave a baby like this? Ned thought as he scooped the baby into his arms, holding it close to himself in an attempt, to share his warmth. Ned mounted his horse and continued the rest of his short journey home, praying to the old God’s that the baby would survive the cold until he could reach the warmth of the castle. The God’s have blessed this child, Ned thought as he entered his chambers where his wife laid waiting for him, wrapped in warm furs.
“Ned is that another one of your bastard children that you insist on tormenting me with.” Catelyn snapped at her husband as she pushed the furs away from her body, whether it was to inspect the child further or to injure Ned, he couldn’t be quite sure.
“Relax my love, this baby is not mine, I found the baby nearby abandoned in the snow. I couldn’t leave it there to suffer and die. The baby is strong, near death and still made it all the way here.” Ned laid the baby down on the furs, it’s skin with a blue tint. Yet as cold as the baby was, it was still curious looking around the room at the strange people. Catelyn, got out of bed, walking over to the baby, the baby turned out to be a little girl, with bright Y/C/E, Catelyn’s gaze melted at the sight. She had always wanted a girl, there was no doubt that Ned and herself would have more children, yet Catelyn was not going to give up the opportunity to have a little girl sooner.
“She certainly is strong, why don’t we take her in as a ward? Let’s call her Y/N, I’ve always thought it was a beautiful name.” Catelyn, picked up the newly named little girl, holding her tightly to her chest.
“That sounds like a wonderful idea, my love. Y/N it is”
Okay so I have this headcanon that the paladins are only able to communicate with their own lions, but all the lions can communicate with one another. This is totally normal because the only way to be able to communicate with the lions is if you’ve bonded with them and gained their trust (if you’ve read my non-food Hunk HCs you know where this is going). Some of the paladins complain to Allura about having to explain what their lions have said to them because the ideas can be too complex for words, but Allura just says that Paladins have only ever been able to talk with their own lion, it’s impossible to communicate with another one. It all starts with Hunk (my precious Hawaiian hunk). He earns Yellow’s complete trust by helping her with mechanical repairs. After seeing how much yellow trusts hunk and how good he is at mechanical repairs, the other lions start coming to Hunk for mechanical repairs and telling Yellow whats wrong with them. It starts out with minor things, like a loose screw or a dented panel, but slowly they all begin to trust him with bigger things. It isn’t odd for a lion to report to Yellow their damages so Yellow can tell Hunk. However there is still a layer of distrust. Only Yellow trusts Hunk enough to turn her off to do major repairs. Until one day in a really bad battle Red gets seriously damaged. Everyone is surprised when Red limps over to Hunk afterwards because she has always held back. But this time it is necessary. Hunk makes sure to ask Yellow to tell Red that he’ll have to turn her off to fix the damages. Red consents and all the lions watch as Hunk repairs her and powers her back up. When Red tells Yellow to give Hunk her thanks Hunk gasps in shock. He just heard her say thank you! All of a sudden he can hear all the lions talking to him! Allura is frozen in shock because it’s supposed to be impossible! Lance just says, it’s Hunk. If Hunk could defeat Zarkon with just his love and compassion he would. Hunk is totally blushing in the corner and slightly overwhelmed by all the lions thoughts spinning around his head because they feel so alien. This leads to the other paladins making efforts to bond with the other lions. Pidge is the next one to achieve it. I always wondered why pidge didn’t just invisibility to all the other lions but then I realized, the lions wouldn’t have trusted pidge to mess with their programming. Only Green would because 1. She can read pidge’s mind and 2. She’s curious by nature and loves experiments. The other lions are always very wary whenever they see pidge plus a piece of technology, and this wariness only grows every time they see an experiment gone wrong that results in pidge covered with soot and Green smoking. Finally after a while of seeing Pidge get better and better with the lions technology Blue finally caves and goes over to Green asking for some of the upgrades too. (Blue really likes showing off some of those upgrades are really cool) Pidge is ecstatic of course, but starts out with small things they know work so they don’t end up losing all of the lions trust. Next is Red, feeding off of the ‘rivalry’, aka Red/Keith is jealous and wants some cool gadgets too! Oddly enough, Yellow is the last one to go to Pidge because she feels as if she is betraying Hunk by having someone else work on her. After a conversation between Yellow, Green, and Hunk, they convince her that programming is very different from mechanics and while Hunk could probably do some coding upgrades, Pidge is the expert. Soon pidge starts doing more experimental things with the lions programming that are custom to each lion. Once again, it’s after a rough battle where one of pidge’s upgrades is the only reason they all got out of there alive that all the lions bond with Pidge. Pidge gasps at all the thoughts entering their head and because of this ability to communicate directly with lions Pidge is able to understand the base code of how Voltron works (something which was previously unknown). Also, now whenever pidge falls asleep in the hangar the lions will gather around them to protect them while they sleep (pidge definitely freaked out the first time they woke up to five gigantic lions staring at them, but now it’s where they prefer to sleep). After Keith and Lance get together they can hear each other’s lions and it actually gives them the ability to mentally communicate with each other (Lance totally takes advantage of this and will think of dirty things just to see Keith blush). Lance ends up bonding with all the lions first, something he will hold over Keith’s head forever. Once he learned that he could communicate with the other lions through blue he went and talked to them everyday. He asked them questions about themselves (something no one had thought to do, most people only thought of them as machines). He tells them about his family and earth, they tell him about how they were made and all the things they’ve seen. It’s a pretty smooth transition to Lance being able to hear all of them. He was just hanging out with the lions in the hangar one day asking them about some of the past paladins when all of a sudden they just respond directly to him. He almost doesn’t realize because he’s already so used to having Blue, Red, and Keith in his head. But then his mind is also filled with Hunk and Pidge trying to figure something out and he realizes that Yellow just spoke directly to him. He decides to gloat to Keith during a sparring match to try catch him off guard, Keith just punches him in the side saying, “I can hear all your thoughts you idiot, now stop leaving your side open.” Keith feels awkward because he can’t befriend the lions like Lance can, he can’t fix any mechanic stuff like Hunk can, and he certainly can’t program like Pidge can. So he kinda just ignores it and trains. One day when talking with Shiro about it, because he hasn’t had any success either, Shiro suggest that keith try to train with the lions since he likes doing that so much. Keith decides to give it a shot and asks all the lions through Red if any of them want to train to prove their reaction time. He explains that with Red being the fastest it would be good practice to try work on speed and stuff. The lions are all hesitant at first, so Blue (who can already talk to Keith) volunteers to go first so the others can watch. Basically it starts out as a serious exercise but ends up devolving into a giant game of tag between Red and Blue. The other lions, realizing they won’t get hurt join in. Soon these giant games of tag become a fairly regular bonding exercise, with the paladins sitting inside their lions, but not steering, just focusing on seeing through their lions eyes. Keith and Red always start as it, but they are usually able to tag someone pretty quickly. One day they decide to switch it up and play a game of hide and seek. Keith finds Red and Blue first thanks to their bond, Yellow and Green hiding in the same spot, and finally manages to sneak up on Black, scaring her into a flashback of Shiros. Keith quickly uses his calming methods for Shiro on Black and is surprised when he hears her say thank you. All of a sudden every lions’ thoughts are flodding his head making sure Black is okay and “can you teach us that? Black has some of Shiro’s PTSD and knowing what to do when the paladins aren’t around would be helpful.” Keith teaches all the lions, and the connected paladins, different ways to calm people down and what do for a flashback vs sleepwalking vs a panic attack etc. This really helps because up until then none of the paladins had realized that parts of them were bleeding over into their Lions.
Shiro is the last to bond. He’s trying so hard but he just can’t get them to trust him and Black won’t tell him why. The other paladins are getting concerned with how dejected Shiro looks after leaving the hangar and it only gets worse with each person who manages to bond with the Lions. The other paladins have to remember to speak out loud because shiro can’t hear their thoughts yet and it really impacts him. Finally they gather all the Lions up and talk with them. ‘what’s going on? Is it because he has a galra arm?’ The Lions are like, ‘umm no? Keith is half galra and we trust him’ (everyone’s kinda like oh yeah forgot about that, Keith may turn a bit purple at that) ‘so what is it??’ they ask, but for some reason the Lions seem to be really hesitant to answer? Like they’ve never seen their Lions like this? Finally Black answers, 'it’s because he doesn’t trust himself. I act on logic, not emotions, and logically Shiro is a good leader and worthy, however we can’t wholly trust someone who doesn’t trust himself and that makes our emotional bond weak.’ The paladins are all in shock because they knew shiro had some issues but they didn’t realize it was that bad.
Initiate Operation: Make Space Dad Realize His Worth™ (yes Lance and pidge came up with it). At first shiro doesn’t get why the paladins keep complimenting him and telling him how much they appreciate him, but each night he goes to bed feeling a bit lighter. Lance comes up with the idea of having a space family therapy night because coming from a huge family he knows that it was always easier to deal with personal issues once you acknowledged them and told others so they could help/encourage you. Allura and Coran agree to join. They have it in the common room, Lance organizes everything and just asks that people come in their PJs (yes actual PJs Keith, don’t you dare come in you’re regular clothes, oh my quiznak just use some of mine!) When everyone walks in the room is transformed. There are mattresses and blankets and pillows on the ground. There’s tissues and comfort food within arm’s reach. Everyone sits down and the paladins leave their minds open so the Lions can hear and participate in the conversation.
Lance goes first talking about how he’s homesick and how he fears he isn’t good enough and that will result in the others dying because he was just a cargo pilot after all. (Keith sends him a mental kiss and then hugs him)
Pidge talks about their fear if never seeing their family again and how they feel like they’re wasting their time doing voltron stuff and then feels guilty about that because they know how important voltron is. Allura talks about how she misses her father and how she’s repeatedly woken up in a cold sweat thinking she killed everyone by flying them into the sun.
Coran talks about how he is filled with regret for not trying harder to save more Alteans. He feels like he could have at least saved one more person but he was so focused on getting allura and the black Lion out of there he didn’t even try. He tells the story of landing the castle know everyone he loved was dead.
Keith talks about how he’s scared about how he feels so much love for everyone in this room because he’s lost everyone he loves and he doesn’t want to lose them.
Finally everyone turns to shiro. He hesitates to unload his worries on then because they all have their own problems, but thankfully with a bit of nudging from Black he opens up. About the flashbacks, the nightmares, the amnesia, the insomnia, and the PTSD. How he’s barely holding it together for the team because he knows they need him to be strong and fearless and how he just feels like he isn’t good enough.
-Hunk goes last (so shiro doesn’t dwell on his own confession.) He talks about how he’s scared he’s never gonna go home, that the universe will always need voltron, and that the only way he’s gonna leave is by dying.
They have a big groups hug and talk about
how they can help each other and what works best for themselves.
After they make a cuddle puddle with shiro in the middle and all it takes is him thinking, I can do right by these people, and all of a sudden all the paladins gasp. They can Feel and See and Hear everything. Their lions, each other, the castle, the universe around them. It takes almost 20 minutes for it to stop being painful and reach a bearable level but all of them realize we can do this. We can defeat Zarkon because we managed to take the most powerful weapon in the universe and make it even stronger.
(Eventually allura and Coran bond with the Lions because they are sick and tired of the paladins thinking they told allura/Coran something but all they did was think it. )

I dreamt that I witnessed a woman give birth in a Hot Topic. The cashier was in Nightmare Before Christmas themed scrubs and her arms were covered in 2008 era meme tats. She delivered the baby and wrapped it in an MCR shirt as it tugged on her gauges. “Her name is Bellatrix” said the mom. Store patrons applauded as they were wheeled out of the store, the baby suckling on a complimentary bottle of Ramune. The point at which I realized it was a dream was when I asked myself why the hell I was in a Hot Topic at all. #AmericanMallGothic

Imagine finding a cute way to tell Loki your pregnant with his baby. You suspect your pregnant and get some blood work done on a Friday but have to wait till Monday for the results. Father’s Day falls that Sunday and you say nothing. Monday morning, you take a home pregnancy test and it comes out positive. Then that afternoon the lab calls to confirm your suspicions. You gift wrap the home test in a little box and after dinner that night, give it to him. “What’s this?” “Just a little something I wanted to give you.” He unwraps it and quickly glances back and forth between it and you. “Is this what I think it is?” “Yes. Sorry the Father’s Day fairies were late in delivering it but I had to wait on a definite confirmation” “So we’re having a baby?” “Nope, a bilgesnipe.” He then carries you upstairs and makes love to you so sweetly, you almost lose your mind.
FINALLY a great PLL episode. I have so many thoughts and theories about this one!
Make sure to enable pictures, they are critical to the theories. It gets better the further you read!!! Enjoy!
I’ve said it many times, but I would really hate if there was twin reveal. This was the case with Courtney DiLaurentis in the book version, and its been done with Jessica and Mary DiLaurentis. It would be a cop-out to do it again, so i sincerely hope it doesn’t happen; but lets explore all the twin hints in this episode, because there were so many.
ARIA- The first time AD FaceTimed Aria, it was just a hooded figure with a black face, but in this episode it was what looked to be Aria’s facial features on Paige’s face. Weird and off-putting
SPENCER- Everyone is thinking and writing about this- but the Spencer we see at the airport with Wren was acting very suspicious. She also is not wearing the white jacket or watch she had on in the previous scene, nor is it draped over her chair. There are also girls wearing matching shirts in the background.
BUT I THINK THE FOLLOWING WAS THE BIGGEST TWIN CLUE OF THE EPISODE:
ALISON- Alison says something VERY interesting when Paige asked her if she loved Emily. Ali says this about Emily, “She looks at you and sees who you really are. Maybe that’s the scariest part-You want to be who she sees.” The second she says this all I could think was WHAT IF IT IS SO SCARY BECAUSE YOU AREN’T THE REAL ALI BUT HER TWIN?! If this Alison that we have been seeing is in fact -lets call her Courtney- then maybe she is feeling remorseful because Emily has been so in love with Alison for so many years, and Courtney wishes she REALLY was Alison. Courtney has taken over Ali’s life but deep down she knows she isnt the real Alison DiLarentis. The title of this episode was “In The Eye Abides The Heart,” which could also connect to this theory. Emily is in love with Alison, and always has been. The person she is seeing now-looks like Alison, but it is really Courtney. But Emily doesn’t know this and believes its Ali because they are identical. Her EYES see who she believes is Alison, which causes her HEART to love her (even though its Courtney). IN THE EYE ABIDES THE HEART.
I think the biggest reveal of this episode was that Archer Dunhill is not the father of Emily’s baby. So who is it???
Charlotte- I am STILL holding out hope that CeCe is not the real Charles, but if she is, what if it was her sperm that she had frozen from before her sex change? She had her boyfriend Archer pretend to be a doctor, and had her cousin Alison implanted with Emily’s eggs and her own sperm. Her cousin gives birth to her baby as a surrogate- this would be the only way she could have a baby now because of her surgery. Even if she is dead now- Archer decided to continue with the plan even after her death so she could “live on.” Confusing and crazy but definitely possible in Rosewood.
AD- I have been praying that AD is male, so maybe it is AD’s sperm. Why? Maybe AD is impotent, which is common for sociopaths and people who have severe mental illnesses. If AD is a relative of Alison, he is having his sister give birth to his child, using Emily’s eggs (not Alison’s eggs because of incest). It’s also a way to psychologically torture Emily&Ali as well- which he loves doing.
Anonymous [Sperm] Donor (which is an AD anagram)- I also think it’s possible that Alison is still the manipulative bitch she has always been and stole Emily’s eggs and had someone implant them in her with a random sperm donor, as a way to bond her and Emily for life and get Paige out of the picture once and for all.
CAMP FOR TROUBLED BOYS
So now we know that Lucas and Charles go WAY BACK. They attended the same camp together for troubled boys where Pastor Ted worked as a counselor since he is Charles’ father.
Remember how Alison used to call Lucas “Hermie,” and say that he had both girl and guy parts? Sometimes babies are born with both male and female sex organs. What if Lucas was sent to this camp because he reallyis a hermaphrodite. (I just want to say as a side note that Marlene has not done a good job of portraying these sensitive subjects before (Charles as transgender and Emily as a lesbian) so I hope if they go this route it is done in a respectful and tasteful way)
What if Lucas is Bethany Young??? Maybe that is his female persona.
The A is very pronounced in Lucas’ signature.
Lucas and Charles wrote and illustrated a comic book. I LOVED this reveal; it was CRAZY and really cool.
Emily & Hanna summarize the comic book: “The hero is this boy who gets picked on by other kids and by his own family. He meets this alien woman in the woods and she becomes his protector. Shes this all powerful shape-shifter that helps get revenge for the boy- by torturing his enemies. And sometimes the boy turns into Arcturus, so he can experience the payback she gets for him.”
There is a heavy metal band which goes by Arcturus. In 1997 they released “Master of Disguise” and in 2015 they released a song titled “Game Over”. (PLL.wikia)
Charles used elements of the comic book in the Dollhouse:
This obviously proves that Lucas is part of the A Team, and has been since (probably) the very beginning. But I dont think he is or has ever been Head A or AD.
In comic books there is always a superhero and an alter ego.
Batman is Bruce Wayne. Spider-Man is Peter Parker. When that character wakes up in the morning, he’s Peter Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man.
Superman didn’t become Superman. Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he’s Superman.
His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the big red “S”, that’s the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears - the glasses, the business suit - that’s the costume Superman wears to blend in with us.
Clark Kent is how Superman views us. And what are the characteristics of Clark Kent? He’s weak… he’s unsure of himself… he’s a coward. Clark Kent is Superman’s critique on the whole human race. (kill bill)
Look at how similar the boys comic book cover is to Superman’s comic book cover:
They both have a yellow background and red lettering.
They both wear a RED CAPE. Which is quite obviously a RED COAT parallel. Maybe this is AD’s homage to his comic book- putting his female A team members in a RED COAT, since his comic book protector wore a RED CAPE.
Now….who wears GLASSES?
Is TOBY our Clark Kent???? Is Toby AD?!
Remember the scene a few episodes back when Spencer visits Toby in the hospital (Remember AD forced her to go. Which makes a lot of sense if Toby is AD) Toby says: “Maybe this town needs to disappear before we can leave”
Maybe that is Toby’s goal. If Toby is AD, maybe he needs to destroy everyone in Rosewood before he can move on with his life.
Then Spencer says, “You should probably try PUTTING ON YOUR GLASSES”
I wrote about this in a previous post but- Spencer says “We beat on, boats against the current.” Which is a quote from The Great Gatsby, and the “all seeing eye” billboard is the most famous imagery and symbolism from that book.
The title of the episode is “IN THE EYE ABIDES THE HEART.”
When Mona is studying the Board Game, she says that it was LOVINGLY HANDMADE with levers and pulleys. Its NOT a computer, its a construction project. Toby built the Game Board and the Dollhouse.
I think its seriously possible that Toby is our Clark Kent…sees himself as Superman.
He is AD, Lucas & Charles’ avenger.
Uhm... I-I have a plot bunny for you. Kakashi and Obito where Obito is a water creature of some sort, like a selkie or a siren, and he meets Kakashi when they're both really young. Kakashi has a new best friend, but Sakumo (who knows all about fairies and their tricks, after the naga prince Orochimaru disappeared and broke his heart) is concerned. So, he asks to meet Obito, and is surprised that instead of a tricky fae he's just been tackled into the sand by a hyper child of the sea.
I TOTALLY MEANT THIS TO BE LIKE 600 WORDS WTF. OOPS??
Sakumo is just a little worried,
He stands on the porch
overlooking the crooked path down to the sea, twisting the chain of the pendant
he normally wears around his fingers. It’s a bad habit, and he always thinks he
might be loosening the setting, twisting the metal out of shape. Thinks of one
day reaching down to touch it and finding the ruby gone, lost forever along the
paths he walks. His heart clenches just imagining it, this last gift gone and
never to return, just like the sly, beautiful, cunning prince who once pressed
it into his hands.
That’s the reason he’s fretting
over Kakashi, really. He’s seen the signs—bits of coral, sea glass from far
shores, shells that can only be found in the deepest places, pearls larger and
brighter than any that land-dwellers can reach without dying in the process. He’s
found bits of seaweed in Kakashi’s hair, swept the sand from his room in the
mornings when he knows it had been
clean the night before. Watched the way he eyes the ocean as it breaks, with something
very much like longing.
Sakumo’s sword rests on the
chair behind him, cleaned and polished to a mirror shine. He hasn’t carried it with
any regularity since Kakashi was born, but he keeps it in repair. There are too
many dangers not to, and sometimes he can earn a few coins guarding a traveler on
their way. It’s not something he wants to use now, in any way, but if Kakashi’s
safety is on the line, he won’t allow himself to do anything less.
He thinks of Orochimaru, of
waking one morning to an empty bed and an empty home. It’s impossible to regret
any choices that gave him Kakashi, no matter how he still mourns both his wife,
a dear friend if nothing else, and the naga prince who stole his heart, but—
But he wants to save Kakashi the
grief that he’s felt all these years, of adoring a fey creature with a mind
half-full of magic and too many dreams that leave no room for more human kinds
Kakashi is stubborn, smart. He won’t
listen to Sakumo, not at first, but Sakumo has to try.
He hears footsteps in the dirt
of the path and drags his eyes up from the ruby in his fist. Kakashi a coming,
steps light, a smile on his face and a string of fish dangling over one
shoulder. They’re not fish that swim anywhere near these shores, but Sakumo smiles
regardless, waves to his son, and allows himself to enjoy the way Kakashi lights
up a little when he sees him.
“Kakashi,” he says warmly,
leaning down to offer a hand up onto the porch, since Kakashi rarely deigns to
approach from the front and use the stairs. “Did you have a good day?”
“It was decent,” Kakashi says
decisively. There’s a flower tucked behind his ear, one the grows near the
mouth of the river that empties into the sea. It’s a fair distance from the
house, and worry twinges at Sakumo’s chest again. Too far for him to hear a
call for help, should it come.
When he manages to wrestle the
feeling under control, Kakashi is watching, dark eyes faintly narrowed. “Are
you okay, Dad?” he asks, tipping his head. “You look like a constipated frog.”
There’s nothing in the world
better for the ego, Sakumo thinks wryly, than having children. “I’m fine, cub. Just—wondering
if you’ll ever introduce my to your new friend.”
Kakashi blinks, but doesn’t bother
asking how he knows. For a brief second, he glances down at the ruby pendant Sakumo
is holding, then away, and says with perfect disinterest, “If I’d known you
wanted to meet an idiot like him, I would have introduced you weeks ago.”
An idiot? Sakumo raises a brow,
but doesn’t try to argue; this is already more of a concession than he
expected, honestly. “Well, maybe I was waiting for you to bring him up,” he
says mildly, tries to inject it with the crushing
parental disapproval via sigh that his own mother always used to devastating
effect, and apparently doesn’t do too badly given the way Kakashi winces.
“It wasn’t a secret,” his son tells him witheringly. “And
besides, I don’t have to tell you everything.”
Sometimes, Sakumo is absolutely,
entirely certain that he won’t survive Kakashi’s teenage years. If he’s already
like this at seven, there’s no hope left at all.
“No,” he agrees, and keeps his
tone light. “Of course you don’t. But I like knowing about what makes you happy,
There’s a long pause as Kakashi stares
at him, evaluating his sincerity. Then he nods once, decisively, and says, “He
should still be near the beach, because he’s a loser who never gets anywhere on
time. You can meet him now.” He hurries inside, leaving the door swinging, to
lay the fish on the counter, and Sakumo takes the opportunity to belt his sword
around his waist and clasp his pendant back around his neck. Kakashi will
notice it—Kakashi notices everything,
much to his chagrin—but he probably won’t say anything.
Then the rapid footsteps are
back, and Kakashi takes a flying leap off the porch to land in the sun-gold
grass. “Come on, Dad,” he says impatiently, looking like he’s going to dart
back and start tugging at Sakumo’s belt the way he did when he was younger. “Before
“I’m coming, I’m coming,” Sakumo
protests, stepping down and following Kakashi’s path as he hurries back down
the hill. Ignoring the track, Kakashi takes the shortcut across the stream,
then down the steepest part of the incline, and hits the dune well ahead of Sakumo,
who isn’t quite reduced to running just yet. He watches his son disappear
around the edges of the dune, and when he rounds it Kakashi is already halfway
to the water, though he’s finally walking again.
“Idiot!” Kakashi calls, pitched
to annoy, impatient as anything, and Sakumo strangles a groan. The very least Kakashi could do not to get killed
by a magical creature would be refraining from insulting it, so of course throwing
around insults is the very first thing Kakashi does. It’s probably how he
introduced himself, knowing him.
“I’m not an idiot, you jerk!” a
voice shouts back. Young, Sakumo thinks with some surprise as he scans the
water. There’s a flash of iridescent scales among the waves, and the next time
one breaks it leaves a shape behind. A long, looping tail, dark blue with a
sheen of orange-gold scattered throughout, flared, feathery fins streaked with the
same colors, pale skin, dark hair chopped short. A siren boy, just pulling himself
up on the sand, and the soldier in Sakumo is assessing, calculating, weighing
the risk of a child who clearly hasn’t even managed to change forms yet.
The rest of Sakumo wonders what
a siren boy, so young and without mastery of his own power, is doing alone on
the surface, far, far away from any siren chorales.
Then he turns, pushing himself
up to sit as he twists to face Kakashi, and Sakumo’s eyes track over the deep
scars all up and down his right side. Cold certainty sets into his bones, and
he releases the hilt of his sword as if it’s burned him. Sirens are vain to a
fault, and scarred chorale members are usually driven out.
Gods, but how long has this boy
been alone, cast out and thinking himself unwanted?
Kakashi and the siren are still
bickering when Sakumo makes his way over to them, and it sounds angry and
cutting and irritated, but Sakumo knows his son better than that. Kakashi looks
fond, and even if Sakumo doesn’t know
the other boy, he’s fairly sure that light in his eyes is the very furthest
thing from hate.
“—wouldn’t have bothered,” Kakashi
is just huffing when Sakumo nears. “But my dad
wanted to meet you, and he’s the only reason I—”
“Your dad?” the siren
interrupts, and his dark eyes are wide with excitement, clearly not taking any
of Kakashi’s bluster to heart. “He wanted to meet me?”
“Of course I did,” Sakumo says
lightly, and smiles as both boys jerk around to look at him.
“So slow,” Kakashi complains, crossing his arms over his chest. “Dad
this is Obito. He’s an idiot, so don’t listen to anything he says.”
Sakumo rolls his eyes, just a
little, but crouches down so that Obito won’t have to crane his neck looking up
at him. “It’s nice to meet you,” he says warmly, watching those black eyes
widen, and gods, the boy is adorable. Especially for a flesh-eating,
sailor-drowning monster of the depths, but, well. No one’s perfect, and if Obito
hasn’t drowned Kakashi yet the world at large is probably safe. On instinct, he
reaches out, ruffling wet hair a little, and offers, “Would you like me to
carry you up the hill so you can eat dinner with us? Those fish—you must be the
one who caught them, right?”
Without warning, Sakumo’s arms are
suddenly full of wet skin and slick scales as a baby siren wraps his arms
around his neck and hugs him tightly. Sakumo overbalances, too startled to make
a sound, but Obito doesn’t let go; if anything he clings tighter, and says in a
tone that’s close to desperate, “Thank
you! Yes! Yes, I really, really want to!”
Sakumo chuckles, picking himself
up out of the sand. “Of course. The least I could do for someone who caught us
such a fine dinner,” he says lightly. He gets an arm around Obito’s back, the
other underneath the glittering tail, and hefts him up.
The fin still curls on the
ground, and he hesitates, not wanting to drag it through the prickly grass, but
before he can say anything Kakashi heaves a disgusted sigh and stalks over,
hefting the feathery end up in his arms. “Can we just get this over with?” he
demands, though Sakumo can see his cheeks are a little flushed.
“Bakashi,” Obito complains, flicking
his tail slightly, and Kakashi makes a deeply offended noise as it slaps him in
Sakumo hides a grin. That’s certainly not how he and Orochimaru interacted.
And…maybe it’s selfish of him, but he’s a little glad Obito doesn’t have a chorale
to go back to, that he’s alone. Maybe he won’t disappear on Kakashi just when
he thinks their happiness is assured.
Before he can ask how in the
world they met, small fingers are at his throat, touching the ruby there
lightly. There’s a soft sound of wonder, and Obito looks up at him, expression
startled. “This is the same necklace the trapped prince is wearing,” he says. “How
does a human have it?”
Sakumo would swear his heart entirely
“Trapped?” he croaks when he can finally manage to draw even a
partial breath again.
Obito tips his head, like the question
confuses him. “Yeah. He’s been sleeping at the bottom of the forest river since
before I was born. My selkie friend says her mom told her there was a battle with
the sea witch Danzō, and an earth goddess and holy monk helped the prince but
even though they defeated Danzō he trapped them in the forest.”
Nine years. Nine years Orochimaru
has been trapped and sleeping and waiting to be rescued, so close at hand, but—Sakumo
He looks towards the forest, a
dark shadow on the horizon, and takes a breath.
Well. It looks like his sword is
going to see a bit of use after all.
