Yet another absolute gem from the manga artists’ Twitter. The Japanese text in the picture reads: “16 Reasons I Love Himari.” It seems to be based on the English song “Sixteen Reasons (Why I Love You).”

Okay, so, this episode. I know we got some questions answered (and I’ll need to go update my previous masterposts that got their answers finally) but it looks like we cracked open Pandora’s Box a little further in the process.

-Starting off, we have the whole spiel in which the AI is criticized as not acting like an AI while the human is criticized as not acting like a human. The constant forcing of this (I think this is either the second or 3rd time we’ve heard this little “banter” go between them both regarding how the other doesn’t fit up to their “specie’s” expectations) makes me think that the fandom is right in that there is something rather fishy about these exchanges. Why constantly remind the audience that Ai is an AI who doesn’t act like an AI and that Yusaku is a human who doesn’t act like a human? It’s blatantly obvious the show wants to make a point of it but is it for humor purposes, to give both of them “common ground” in the expectations they deny of their “species”? I wonder, honestly…

-Not to mention, but when Playmaker tells Ai to act like an A.I., I’m not sure if it’s because he’s messing around or what but he seems reaaaaallly uncomfortable with playing the part of an A.I. His movements become…slower? Stiffer? Stiffer seems like a good word for it. He’s making fun of normal A.I.’s, true, but his expression seems like he’s uneasy about making such gestures. It almost reminds me of the way Yusaku tried interacting with Aoi and the Duel Club (other humans). Yusaku was obviously uncomfortable trying to act like a normal human being around others of his kind (…that feels rather weird to say) while Ai, while trying to mimic his supposed brethren, went about it in a way that said more “awkward” than it did “haha, look, A.I.’s are dumb!”.

-Akira. Soooo, I might be reading too much into this but there might be a chance that there’s more to Akira’s past than we realize. When he does his philosophical spiel to Playmaker, it honestly sounds like Akira was once on the same path that Playmaker was but, eventually, gave up:

This episode…was GREAT. For the first time in awhile I actually cared about the duel and what was happening. With the last few duels it’s more about just going through the motions to get to an objective. With this duel, it’s about needing to win from both sides, with stakes and actions and WORDS that actually make the duel exciting and not just monster after monster. Of course, this is merely my opinion but you have to admit this episode was well-done and pretty entertaining in of itself.

Now, regardless, I’ll move on to the mysteries themselves:

-For one, we now know that Ai is NOT involved with Yusaku’s past ten years ago. If we can assume that Akira learned the full truth about what happened, his words then suggest that Ai has no part in anything that went on when Yusaku was child. However, this begs the question of, at this point, how do the Ai’s fit into the plot? Akira’s questions of how the Ai fits into anything (and his seeming musing on whether or not it having free will) kind of makes me wonder if the show is subtly hinting that Ai is somehow involved in the plot but just not in the way we initially assumed…???

-Okay, so, I’m gonna say one word right here about Kusanagi and the picture below:

Bullshit

Kusanagi claims in this picture that he was unaware of SOL Technologies involvement in the incident of ten years past, seeming startled and surprised when Zaizen announces this. However, take a look at what he says back in episode 6:

Ruki (reading mail): “Aoi-san, Ruki-san, good evening. I’m writing to you about why I don’t like New Year’s parties and stuff like that.” Man they’re gettin right to it

(Aoi giggles)

Ruki: “I’m currently the lowest in my company, so I have to make all the arrangements for these parties. Just when the year-end party has finally passed, you have the New Year party coming up, and then there’s farewell parties, and welcome parties…I’m so sick of it. Have you guys ever had the unpleasant experience of having to organize events for your senpais or staff?”

Aoi: Okay okay okay…you know…I’m pretty good at [planning parties].

Ruki: Oh–! …I see!

Aoi: Yes. Getting the place ready and stuff…

Ruki: Ahh I’m jealous.

(Aoi giggles)

Ruki: Like when you’re taking your kouhai’s or whatever out…

Aoi: Well I don’t make that much of an effort for my kouhais, but if it’s my senpais…

Ruki: Oh yeah yeah okay…nice!

Aoi: Yes yes yes…I even got the whole afterparty planned

Ruki: WOW!!!

Aoi: Yeah like I call them a cab and stuff

Ruki: REALLY!!??

Aoi: Yeah

Ruki: Damn…

Aoi: Obviously

Ruki: You should be a broker HUHUHUHU

Aoi: Yeah I’m really good at it.

Ruki: I can’t [plan] for shit.

Aoi: Oh really?

Ruki: Yeah, seriously…I…I’m definitely the type to want someone else to plan it for me.

(Aoi giggles)

Ruki: I just don’t know how – really, I don’t mean to be inconsiderate, but…I guess it doesn’t help that I don’t drink…I just don’t know what makes a good [drinking event].

Aoi: Ahh….I thought it was a given tbh

Ruki: What?

Aoi: That the kouhai plans the events, and tends [to the senpais]

Ruki: Ohhh, well yeah, I guess you’re right.

Aoi: But the kids these days don’t do any of that!

Ruki: Ahhhh…

Aoi: They drink with us like they’re on the same level

Ruki: Oh like they don’t pour your drink?

Aoi: Yeah – no like, I’ll go out to get a taxi, and they come out of the place at the same time as the senpais (*idk anything about senpai/kouhai rules tbh but I guess this is bad)

Ruki: Really!?

Aoi: If they pull that shit I cut them off

Ruki: I wonder if they’re listening to this

Ruki and Aoi at exact same time: HUHUHUHU

Ruki: But yeah, I mean, stuff like that does happen…and I mean it’s weird for the senpai to be tending to their kouhais…

(they bitch a bit more about shit like why am i the one offering you a drink and then go to a song request smh)
