worlds largest religious monument

Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world; it’s shear size and beauty is unbelievable. The outer wall encloses 820,000 square meters of inscriptions, monuments, terraces, galleries, towers, courtyards, and pavilions, and is surrounded by a 190m-wide moat forming a complex measuring 1.5km by 1.3km. The mother of all temples is famous not only for it’s size and importance; however, but the complexity and detail of the astonishing and endless bas-relief sculptures as well.- over 1 square kilometer of them. It’s truly a site to behold, and my photos can’t even begin to do it justice.

@douglasbooth: Today I climbed to the top of Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world. Virtually all of its surfaces, columns, lintels and even roofs are carved. There are miles of reliefs illustrating scenes from Indian literature including unicorns, griffins, winged dragons pulling chariots as well as warriors following an elephant-mounted leader and celestial dancing girls. Completely awe inspiring 🙏🏼

A reflection of Angkor Wat at sunrise. Built in the early 12th century the temple was first Hindu and later Buddhist.  This temple complex in Cambodia is the largest religious monument in the world. Located in Siem Reap it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. @thephotosociety @natgeo @natgeocreative #angkorwat #cambodia #siemreap #unesco #sunrise #reflections #hindu #buddhism #sonya7II by natgeo
