How to Dress Up Your Sneakers

5 modern ways to style the casual sneaker

If the handfuls of sneaker-clad girls still flooding fashion blogs and websites is any indication, we’d say the tennis shoe trend is here to stay. By now, everyone from your favorite tastemakers to regular girls on the street have tested the comfy shoe with everything hanging in their closets. Be it a fur coat or a simple pair of black socks, we found some of the coolest new pairings that you can easily make your own - follow our style tips below and shop the looks you love.

1. Mix normcore basics with vintage pieces

We loved Tavi Gevinson’s creative style mashup of The Royal Tenenbaums and ’90s normcore at the season 4 premiere of “GIRLS.” Dress up a classic pair of sneakers and mom jeans with a plush coat and a buttoned-up button-down for an unexpected undone look.

2. Make the shoes a complete surprise

One of the best things about sneakers is that you can literally wear them with anything and still look great. For instance, the last thing you would expect this girl in a white sweater and long lace skirt to be wearing is a pair of red Converse high-tops - exactly the reason she looks so cool.

4. Style your worn white pair with black-on-black

Everyone has a scuffed-up pair of white tennis shoes that hang out in the back of the closet, but what you may not know is that they still have so much potential. Wear yours with a slouchy black sweater, skirt and matching socks for a modern update.

What are some fall staples in your closet?

Discovering staples was a necessity for me this fall, as I had to pack clothing for the entire semester I’ll be in London. I aimed for Peggy Olsen meets Alexa Chung meets Karla Derass. Luckily I packed lightly so this list should be pretty simple:

Tops: turtlenecks, striped t-shirts, silk camisoles, wool tank top, turtleneck tank top

Bottoms: high-rise dark wash jeans, black leggings, high-rise mom jeans, wool/satin mini skirts (to be worn with tights)

Outerwear: RAIN JACKET (obvi), wool coat, down vest, light varsity jacket

Shoes: black leather high-tops, black leather heeled boots, black leather over-the-knee boots (I hate black leather), black rain boots, taupe heels

Accessories: brown leather cross-body bag, wool/cashmere plaid scarf, minimal jewelry

That’s pretty much everything I have with me at the moment, but it’s definitely prone to expansion considering my location so stay tuned.
