In the main menu of Mario Power Tennis, Toad is present to explain the selection options. It appears as though Toad is close to the background and roughly the same size as the icons. However, moving the viewpoint reveals that Toad is actually extremely tiny and extremely close to the camera (note Toad near the left edge of the screen in the bottom image).

Solar System: 10 Things to Know This Week

Need some space?

Here are 10 perspective-building images for your computer desktop and mobile device wallpaper.

These are all real images, sent very recently by our planetary missions throughout the solar system.

1. Our Sun

Warm up with this view from our Solar Dynamics Observatory showing active regions on the Sun in October 2017. They were observed in a wavelength of extreme ultraviolet light that reveals plasma heated to over a million degrees.

Mobile: 1440 x 2560 | 1080 x 1920 | 750 x 1334

2. Jupiter Up-Close

This series of enhanced-color images shows Jupiter up close and personal, as our Juno spacecraft performed its eighth flyby of the gas giant planet on Sept. 1, 2017.

3. Saturn’s and Its Rings

With this mosaic from Oct. 28, 2016, our Cassini spacecraft captured one of its last looks at Saturn and its main rings from a distance.

4. Gale Crater on Mars

This look from our Curiosity Mars rover includes several geological layers in Gale crater to be examined by the mission, as well as the higher reaches of Mount Sharp beyond. The redder rocks of the foreground are part of the Murray formation. Pale gray rocks in the middle distance of the right half of the image are in the Clay Unit. A band between those terrains is “Vera Rubin Ridge,” where the rover is working currently. The view combines six images taken with the rover’s Mast Camera (Mastcam) on Jan. 24, 2017.

Mobile: 1440 x 2560 | 1080 x 1920 | 750 x 1334

5. Sliver of Saturn

Cassini peers toward a sliver of Saturn’s sunlit atmosphere while the icy rings stretch across the foreground as a dark band on March 31, 2017. This view looks toward the unilluminated side of the rings from about 7 degrees below the ring plane.

6. Dwarf Planet Ceres

This image of the limb of dwarf planet Ceres shows a section of the northern hemisphere, as seen by our Dawn mission. Prominently featured is Occator Crater, home of Ceres’ intriguing “bright spots.” The latest research suggests that the bright material in this crater is comprised of salts left behind after a briny liquid emerged from below.

Mobile: 1440 x 2560 | 1080 x 1920 | 750 x 1334

7. Martian Crater

This image from our Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) shows a crater in the region with the most impressive known gully activity in Mars’ northern hemisphere. Gullies are active in the winter due to carbon dioxide frost, but northern winters are shorter and warmer than southern winters, so there is less frost and less gully activity.

8. Dynamic Storm on Jupiter

A dynamic storm at the southern edge of Jupiter’s northern polar region dominates this Jovian cloudscape, courtesy of Juno. This storm is a long-lived anticyclonic oval named North North Temperate Little Red Spot 1. Citizen scientists Gerald Eichstädt and Seán Doran processed this image using data from the JunoCam imager.

9. Rings Beyond Saturn’s Sunlit Horizon

This false-color view from the Cassini spacecraft gazes toward the rings beyond Saturn’s sunlit horizon. Along the limb (the planet’s edge) at left can be seen a thin, detached haze.

10. Saturn’s Ocean-Bearing Moon Enceladus

Saturn’s active, ocean-bearing moon Enceladus sinks behind the giant planet in a farewell portrait from Cassini. This view of Enceladus was taken by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft on Sept. 13, 2017. It is among the last images Cassini sent back before its mission came to an end on Sept. 15, after nearly 20 years in space.

NieR Automata: Happy (E)ndings are Possible Through Unity and Sacrifice

That’s probably the best way I can summarize my recent experience with NieR Automata, a game that is truly Yoko Taro at his best: unsettling, tragic, strange, entertaining, emotionally-charged, and downright surprising. But what made this version of Automata stand out is the numerous routes (A, B, C, D) that bring about the question of meaning and whether there is meaning when things seem impossible.

To put things into perspective, the story revolves around main characters of 2B, 9S, and A2, combat androids of the YoRHa unit aimed to ‘save humans on the moon’ from the evil machines (plot twist: humans died long ago). This is implied to be their only reason to live- to protect humans at all cost. Little do they know all the humans died long ago and are being forced to repeatedly kill the androids.

Through the trials of Ending A, B, C, and D, nothing but tragedy, despair, and failure repeat for the characters. Whether it is your character dying, forcing someone else’s death, or dying of a character’s morals, dreams, or motivations, the game shows itself to be impossible to ‘beat’ by yourself. There is 2B getting tired of being forced to kill her lover/love interest 9S for eternity, 9S is being used to gather information but killed whenever getting too smart, and A2 is used as a guinea pig for the logic virus and making it better.

The cycle of killing, despair, and corruption constantly repeats itself because you, as the player, are forbidden from ‘breaking the code’ and giving the players the happy life routes they wish to obtain. Yet, every time you are killed, you are given various messages by fellow characters telling you not to give up. Despite the tragedy, there is always a small glimmer hope in the routes, pushing you to keep trying.

Perhaps there is a happy ending after all, if you keep trying…?

Enter Ending (E). What happens is that before the start Ending (E), you are sent to the game’s final boss….the credits?

That’s right- you are literally fighting the credits. In other words, the creators themselves:

This is a very difficult part and is pretty likely you will die ‘fighting the creators.’ Until….you are given the option to select ‘YES’ where another player suddenly offers to save you. Someone else must be wiling to sacrifice themselves to save you. There is a glitch in the system no one could anticipate- finding meaning in otherwise one’s (permanent) loss.

Help, which you’ve really haven’t had all game, comes in the form of the pods who have backup data for all three characters. As this happens, the credits themselves even start fizzling out while you are given this gem:

“I have to come to the conclusion that I cannot accept this resolution.”- Pod 042.

You are also given the option to pay it forward to save another person when they reach the final battle.

What this game is really asking you…. if and when the time comes, are you willing to make sacrifices for the betterment of the world, even if you gain nothing and possibly lose it all? Can you find meaning where most people cannot and simply give up? Are you willing to place your trust in others in a world where the ‘other’ is seen as the enemy?

Because someone is willing to sacrifice their own data, the characters are all able to survive. This is strong message in that unity and sacrifice, no matter how small and insignificant, provide us hope even in the darkest times. This is underlying message behind the madness Taro has provided us- in an idealized world, we would all make the sacrifice. The world may be a very cruel and meaningless place at times, it does not mean we ourselves are meaningless, nor are our actions meant to protect our fellow beings.

Oh, and the chorus during the final credits? The developers of this game!! They are literally trying to cheer you on to defeat ‘their game’ and find the happy ending within their world of challenge and despair. They are challenging you to find meaning even though the characters question it repeatedly.

NieR Automata is a great game that is now one of my all-time favorites- it reminds me of Majora’s Mask in that has the ability to make you think and consider how it relates to humanity. It may not have the mainstream popularity or be some extravagant open world, but to me, this is what a GOTY is all about- challenging your world views and making you think long after the game has been turned off.

Wynonna Earp - Western Style Cast Poster

Looking through my old stuff from Buffy, Rookie Blue, Clexa et all and found I had a lot of these Western Style Posters in the works… never finished.

Wynonna Earp fit the style so much better so I decided to switch it around and make my first poster for the show.

#OnlyInGotham does calling 911 get you an automated voice menu that starts with "to report a super villain sighting, press one; to report an alteration in your water, press two; to report the sound of gunfire, press three..." Pro tip: the fastest way to talk to an actual person is to immediately select option 9: "to report crazed laughter." (If it's so important, why did GCPD put it last?! Also, FYI, medical emergencies are 7 and fire is 8.)

Shitty server demands a better tip

A couple months back, my boyfriend and I went out for drinks one night at this cool little “speakeasy” in Montreal. It’s actually quite an interesting place. You come in through a nondescript entrance and the place has a really nice vibe going on once you get inside. Note: this is one of those bars where the server comes to your table and serves the drinks rather than one where you order at the bar and take the drinks back yourself.

We were seated at our table by the server. We ordered a couple cocktails. And then a couple more, and then a couple more after that. Each time we had to order, my boyfriend or I would have to go fetch the server so he would take our order or go up to the bar, order, and then bring the drinks back ourselves.

Then, when it came time for the bill, I went up again so he would come to our table. He came and thought we were going to order again despite me clearly asking for the bill when I went up. So, he went back to get the card machine and it was another ten minutes before he was back. At this point, I was quite ticked off at the not-so-great service and was debating whether or not I should tip him. The screen had an option for 10%, 15%, 20% or “other.” I decided to just leave 10% as I wanted to avoid an argument with the server. Montreal service employees are pretty damn notorious when it comes to the expectation of tips.

Now, he prints out the receipt and takes a look at it and sees I left 10%. He then asks if we had a nice evening, to which my boyfriend responded that we did; we both thought it was just a standard question servers ask so we didn’t bother telling him about the poor service received–especially because it wouldn’t really make a difference at this point. The guy then says, “oh, well if you had such a nice time, than you should’ve left at least a 15% tip. Because, in Canada, it’s customary to leave a minimum 15% when the service is good.” I’m guessing the reason he felt the need to outline that’s how it is in Canada is because I’m a brown guy.

Now comes the petty part. I responded, “oh I didn’t know, why don’t you cancel this bill and redo it so I can tip you properly. He said sure thing, just give me a second because the manager has to approve bill cancellations. Again, we waited a good 10 minutes for him to come back with the new bill. I was happy to wait, though, because once he came back, I put in the PIN and then selected the "other” option for tip and left him 0%. He printed out the receipt and his look of disbelief was well worth it. We got up and my (white Canadian) boyfriend said, “Our only tip for you is to give better service and not be so much of an asshole. In Canada, we don’t really like assholes.”

Jimin silently stuffs a spoonful into his mouth and although he had no appetite, the mere thought of this being something you made is enough to push him to forcefully swallow it. He thinks perhaps if he ate enough of it, it could help fill the vague emptiness he felt in his chest but he knew that only one thing could do that and that was you.

“So, he went to the ball with this Mina girl?” Solji asks, her voice slightly fuzzy over the phone speaker.

You let out a low hum of agreement, sinking down onto your bed, the phone still pressed to your ear.

“Because she asked?”

“Yes,” You sigh, setting your phone next to your head after selecting the loudspeaker option on your screen.

“And you had a week to ask him to the ball but you didn’t?”

“Well, I mean… yeah… but whatever, that’s not my point,” You groan. “My point is that he slept with Mina.”

“And is that a surprise to you? You really can’t blame him can you?” She asks. “He probably waited for you to ask him out to the ball and when you didn’t, he assumed you weren’t interested and went for someone else who was.”

“But I am interested,” You grumble, running your hand over your face in frustration.

with the powers of microsoft paint, and by using this screenshot from the video Do Ya Thing

i have calculated what percentage of 2D’s body is just legs

by using the selection option, i can see how tall in pixels he is, which he is about 434 pixels tall

now, by selecting his legs, i can say that his legs are about 265 pixels tall

by doing some simple multiplication and division, i can determine that 2D’s legs make up about 61% of his body! compared to his torso, which makes up about 20%, and his head at about 19%, that’s a lot of leg for a guy

1. You must be in the US according to what I’ve heard. Sorry other regions :( (Edit: Apparently Canada and New Zealand also have access to this!)
2. In your settings change your preferred language to Japanese. This will change the text on the site/app to Japanese!
3. In the language/caption options select 日本語 (Japanese audio track) on the left and 英語(CC) (English captions) on the right.

How to Capture Video & Use for Gifs

Okay, so an anon asked for this tutorial and I’m not quite sure if it’s what they wanted, and I’m sorry it’s super late. But basically, this is a tutorial for how I record video from Netflix/Amazon/Hulu etc. where it’s hard to download the video file from (in the cases that I can’t find the episode downloadable online or don’t want to torrent, etc.) so I can use the video for making gifs. You’ll need Quicktime, Photoshop, and (probably) an account for the website you’re trying to use the video from depending on what streaming service you’re using. Also please note, this tutorial is for recording video only, audio is harder to record with Quicktime and since this tutorial is only for making gifs, I’m not including how to do that.
