Cataclysm - Neal + Belle/Gold

@gypsy-belle asked: Although the rest of the apartment was cool enough, the bathroom was sweltering.

CATACLYSM
(Ao3)

Although the rest of the apartment was cool enough, the bathroom was sweltering.

Neal frowned at the tendrils of vapor that escaped from beneath the door. He knocked a few times, stopping when there was no answer. Now more worried than puzzled, he twisted the knob and hurried through the steamy room to turn off the hot water. “Dad!” he called out, trying to push down the sudden spike of panic.

The discarded coat on the couch had been a curiosity. His memories of childhood included watching his father meticulously fold every article of clothing, no matter the occasion or time of day. Their house, small and poor as it was, had been organized to its last inch. Even now, in the mansion where he lived by himself, crammed with furniture in every room, his father carried in his head a detailed inventory of every item and its place. Neal couldn’t think of his father misplacing a draft for a contract, or so much as forgetting to charge his cell phone before bed.

Added the fact that, ever since their reunion, his father treated anything that related to Neal as gold, Neal could think of nothing short of cataclysm pushing the man into such carelessness.

“Dad!” he shouted again, more loudly.

Something tragic I noticed in Skin Deep

I am sure other Rumbelle fans may have noticed this long before I did but I just noticed this and thought I should share it.

First I’m going to flash back here to season two when we saw Milah mock Rumplestiltskin with her pirate friends at the tavern.  Later when she’s hung over (despite how she treated him) human Rumplestiltskin offers her a cup of tea but she does not take it.

(Ironic that there are some haters who insist this guy somehow abused her. She left their child home alone with a fire while she mocked her disabled husband to pirates.  And later when she’s hung over he tries to give her tea.   Sooooo abusive.  That’s sarcasm, by the way…)

Anyway…

In Season four during the AU where he is “The Light One” it’s Belle who offers him a cup of tea to help clear his thoughts.

He ends up dropping it and it becomes that universe’s chipped cup.

The point here is that tea has always had a special significance to Rumple before he even became the imp, before even Belle’s chipped cup.

Now back to Skin Deep.  After Rumplestiltskin kicks Belle out we see Rumple alone at his spinning wheel when Regina barges in.  He was not expecting her that day.  She’s there to discuss “a certain little mermaid.”

However…  look at the tea he has out.  Rumple had two tea cups ready.  I think he was hoping that despite having kicked her out, that Belle would again return and he could make amends over a cup of tea, as he would have when he was mortal.

Look. There are two cups.  He wasn’t expecting Regina.  They both make that clear.  She just helped herself to the tea.   So who was that second cup for?

He was hoping Belle would return.  He wanted to talk to her, he wanted to be the one to serve her tea.

And what is the first thing he does for Belle in the very first episode of Season two?  Well, it’s interrupted by the heroes barging into his shop but he’s preparing her that tea finally.

I think that after Rumplestitlskin kicked Belle out in Skin Deep he kept setting out two cups and tea in case she’d come back, hoping she’d come back.   And after he believed her to be dead he would have given anything to have that cup of tea with her…

It was always there in the back of his mind so when they were finally reunited it was the first thing he did with her, besides admitting he loves her.

When he serves you tea it’s his way of apologizing or an act of humility.  In any event it seems to be his go to instinct for “making things right.”

I wonder if that’s something child Rumple got from the spinsters who raised him, that when things are bad, or you are fighting with someone, pour them a cup of tea.  Tea makes everything better.  Even the AU Belle set it.  “Things always look better after a nice cup of tea.”

Neal Cassidy Arcs We Were Robbed Of

Going back in time, seeing his father at the height of his power and madness, assuring him that they would reunited before Rumple drinks the memory potion.

Learning who Emma is all over again, rebuilding their friendship, maybe even even letting themselves be in love again, finding joy in their shared son, trading their frustrations over magic and families.

Watching his father suffer through PTSD, trying his best to help him cope and not repress what he feels, crying with Belle when he ultimately fails.

Bonding with his step mother while they awkwardly try to figure out their dynamic, are they supposed to act like a child and a mother, two friends, or something they can’t think of?

Helping his son grow into his own, especially when he becomes the Author, teaching him to be responsible and never stop fighting for his loved ones, to succeed where all the men in his family have failed.

Watching in pain as the Darkness is torn out of his father and forced into the love of his life, agonizing over whether it would twist her as terribly, wondering who she would become.

Suffering the same curse as his father and True Love, gaining a greater understanding of them both because of it, fighting demons and death itself to hold onto his humanity.

Reuniting with his birth mother in the Underworld, finding peace and closure with her, a little spark of hope as their renewed love helps her move on.

Fighting tooth and nail when he realizes he has a younger sibling on the way, promising himself this one wouldn’t have the childhood he had, helping his parents reconcile and work towards protecting the baby.

Raging at yet another cruel relative that tears his family apart, seeking every possible way to save his baby brother, breaking down with grief when he realizes Gideon had just as bad of a childhood, uniting both his family and Emma’s to defeat his grandmother, rejoicing when he can finally hug the newest member of his family.

Fic: Only The Beginning

Title: Only The Beginning
Rating: NC-17
Summary: In the immediate aftermath of the final battle, Belle and Rumpelstiltskin begin their happily ever after. Featuring a nursery, reunion sex, and the return of Belle’s wedding ring.

A/N: So this is basically all of my post-finale Rumbelle feelings summed up in a 9,000 word fic. I still can’t believe Rumbelle got their baby back, and a happy ending!

[On AO3]

The walk back from the mines is quiet.

Rumple has already explained what happened while she was nursing her ankle, the confrontation with his darker self that – even if she had been capable – Belle would have known he had to fight alone. It came out in a rush, disbelieving and shaking as they held their son together for the first time. He told her everything, and she is proud of him, prouder than she has words to express. He had fought the darkness, rejected it, and won. He had felt the shift: his darkness, the thick black magic in his veins, had turned to light. She had been right all along, and he is sorry, so sorry, for having doubted her.

The baby in the basket in Belle’s arms, their precious boy restored to them whole and innocent, is proof enough of Rumpelstiltskin’s victory. Belle tells him so, again and again, and he almost looks as if he believes this might be real after all.

But as they leave the mines, they lapse into silence.

And I need you to watch over us while we’re gone

For those still hungry for more Beauty and The Beast

If you’re looking for something to satisfy your budding Beauty and The Beast obsession while waiting for the new live action Disney film to come to video (in twelve weeks) here are a few things that might tide you over.

First I highly recommend the original 1740 Beauty and the Beast novel La Belle et la Bete by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve.  It’s roughly two hundred pages long and there are two unabridged editions available right now on Amazon.  Both are the same translation, they just divide the chapters differently.

This one is soft cover and has more chapter breaks (Otherwise they have the same text)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1502992973/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And this one is hard cover with less chapter breaks and is also illustrated with “interactive games” built in.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0062456210/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My second recommendation is for the Beauty and The Beast Broadway musical album.  It has songs that don’t appear in the animated film or live action Beauty and The Beast and one song on the album “Home” was used as an instrumental in the 2017 Beauty and The Beast.

  https://www.amazon.com/Beauty-Beast-Broadway-Various-artists/dp/B01MTFJO7U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1490504090&sr=8-1&keywords=Beauty+and+the+Beast+Broadway

There is a 1987 Beauty and the Beast released by Canon.  This one has songs and is very true to the fairy tale adapted from the novel (but not so much the actual novel.)

There is also the 1947 French film, the first film version of Beauty and The Beast (to my knowledge).

https://www.amazon.com/Beauty-Beast-Criterion-Collection-Marais/dp/B00007L4I6/ref=sr_1_22?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1490504615&sr=1-22&keywords=Beauty+And+the+Beast

There is the 1987 Beauty and The Beast TV series (far superior to the recent one from CW).

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L9CDUAK/ref=pd_luc_rh_sbs_03_03_t_img_lh?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

There is also the TV series Once Upon a Time which merges the story of Rumplestiltskin with Beauty and The Beast and has Rumplestiltskin as The Beast in his glittering, scaled imp form.   The most blatant Beauty and the Beast aspects are in the season one episode Skin Deep.

https://www.amazon.com/Once-Upon-Time-Season-1/dp/B0058YPL66

My seventh recommendation is the 2014 Beauty and The Beast French movie.

You may have seen this one on display in stores as it was shamelessly released in the US at the same time as the new live action Disney film.  The 2014 Beauty and the Beast movie only recently got an American DVD / Blu Ray Release partly because of the new Disney animated film

https://www.amazon.com/Beauty-Beast-Vincent-Cassel/dp/B01N3S0404/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1490504277&sr=8-8&keywords=Beauty+and+The+Beast+DVD

You can watch it in French, or with English dub or English subtitles.

The 2014 Beauty and The Beast is a bit odd but visually very pretty.   It doesn’t quite follow the novel but has elements of the novel and much like the Disney film it kind of does it’s own thing.

In this version The Prince’s backstory is told in periodic flashbacks.   He was married to a beautiful woman and he became obsessed with hunting a golden hind (a magical deer).  His wife made him promise to stop hunting to animal and he agreed.   However he went back on his word and carried out the hunt anyway, killing the creature with a golden arrow (the only thing that could kill the golden hind).  As she was dying the golden hind transformed into his wife, revealing that she had been a forest nymph all along.

Her father, the God of the Forest, punished the prince by turning him into a Beast, his companions into statues, and his hunting dogs into strange, large eyed, bunny-like creatures.

In this version Belle is the reincarnation of the wife he accidentally killed.   It’s visually very pretty but I don’t really feel the chemistry between Belle and The Beast in this one and in fact Belle is kind of vicious toward him a few times.

I have mixed feelings about this one’s writing but it’s visually gorgeous and it has a sort of Gothic ambiance.
