Tips for High School Witches

Hey guys! I’ve been a witch for about a year now, and being a high schooler in a conservative state has made it quite interesting, to say the least. So here are some things I’ve discovered that have made being a young, jobless witch AMAZINGLY easy!

The Library- if you are in High school, you undoubtedly have easy access to a library. This will contain information on mythology, religion, weather, astronomy, history, and just about any subject. Almost all of this knowledge (certainly all that I just listed) can be used in your craft. These are FREE BOOKS WHENEVER YOU NEED THEM. Take advantage!

The Art Room- weather you are in an art class or not, there is usually at least one art teacher in the school who has plenty of strange junk and materials that can be used for witchcraft. For instance, my teacher’s closet includes: bones, wax, wire, clay, wood, soapstone, beads, and all kinds of other brilliant components. These are FREE MATERIALS!!! As long as you have the teachers permission, GET WHATEVER YOU CAN!! You wouldn’t believe how many witchy items I’ve made in third period that cost me exactly $0.00.

The Thrift Store- I’ve seen other witches beat this one to death, but I must stress what a good resource thrift stores are for witchcraft. I’ve purchased brass candle holders, carved wooden boxes, stone incense burners, and more for less than $5. You can also find altar cloths, candles, picture frames, and more. The thrift stores of good for more than retro fashion!

Now, I also want to suggest some of the most useful spells and tricks to a high school witch (in my experience, of course.)

Anti Suspicion- wether your parents know or not (mine certainly don’t) you definitely don’t want your whole school to know that you’re a witch. Trust me. A simple sigil or spell to avert suspicion and ill intent will go MILES! My altar is the first thing you see in my room, I hoard bottles and jars, I use all the candles, and my parents suspect nothing. I’ve come to school with sigils all over my arm and no one so much as blinks an eye. I’ve also been able to get away with not wearing my school ID for a semester and a half, which was a nice side effect. Moon water is also great for making you less visible/noticeable.

Focus/success- when you’re about halfway through a semester of homework and studying, you’re gonna want some help. Spells for focus, knowledge, brain power, and success at schoolwork should not be underestimated. I’ve also found that wearing carnelian and aventurine Jewellry does wonders. I also rub safely diluted Rosemary oil on the back of my hand, and smell it whenever I’m struggling on tests and quizzes, as it aids in memory.

Luck, Prosperity, & health- you are a high schooler. You probably stay up way too late, forget a ton of assignments, spill things constantly, trip, lose socks, lose your wallet, and run into all kinds of awkward, dumb situations. A blend of safely diluted orange, lemon, Rosemary, and lavender oil will provide health, prosperity, positivity, happiness, protection, and psychic power. Aventurine, citrine, and rise Quartz are also some good crystals to keep you focused, happy, and protected.

If you have any more questions for me, want to talk, or want to add to the list, feel free to do so! Love you guys, and good luck!!!

(Dreamswap) A Letter to No One

You guys wanted an explanation for Dream’s sun symbol charm…

… and now we’re here.

Nobody asks me why I wear this charm… people pass it off as aesthetics. I suppose that’s for the better, I have a very difficult time with this story…

But for record’s sake, it’s important that I tell it. I must get it out of my head or it will haunt my thoughts forever, or even suffer the fate of being completely forgotten.

Many, many years ago, when I had recently coordinated my work into an official organization, I was spending a certain day jumping from AU to AU on my own, looking for people in emotional need.

I sensed a particularly powerful source of darkness and utter misery, and I followed it, only to discover a young human standing on the roof of a hospital.

I knew what they were about to do. Before I could say a word, they noticed my presence and turned around.

As most people did… and frankly still do, they asked me if I was an angel.

With my lack of preparation, I simply told them yes, anything to get them away from the edge. I wouldn’t have been fast enough to catch them, had they jumped.

I told them that I was there to rescue them from whatever was hurting them.

And that’s precisely what I did… I took them back with me. I told them to rest, I told them that things would be okay now. They accepted me joyously, ecstatic to get away from whatever their former life was.

Over the course of time, I spent a lot of time around this human. They were an eighteen year-old named Ani with short black hair and blue eyes. They had a kind heart (quite literally, their soul was green) and they were always looking for ways to help the people around them.

I noticed that they were quite frail, unable to go long periods without rest. On one occasion, they momentarily fainted.

I wasn’t sure what was wrong with them. They told me it was okay, and that they’ve dealt with this their whole life.

Ani had an affinity for crafts, as I learned over time. The desk in their sleeping quarters was soon littered with all kinds of things, particularly beads, wires and even handmade charms. It wasn’t limited to that, however–they were building little things all the time: sewing dolls and stuffed animals, making figures and buildings out of cardboard or popsicle sticks, weaving occasionally, tying strings into knots to create bracelets…

They contributed a lot of their creations to the young children I was taking in, who were overjoyed in turn, and even taught them how to make some things.

Everyone would agree that Ani was a bright ray of sunshine in the castle. (The metaphorical kind, because I was the literal kind.) It was hard to believe that they were the miserable person that I had found on that hospital roof.

I would be lying if I said that I didn’t feel anything for them.

One day, they approached me with a small box. They said it was for me, addressing me as “Lord Dream” like everyone else as they frequently did, as much as I insisted that it was not necessary.

Inside it was a charm that they had made, attached to a chain from the back. It was golden, shaped like a sun and had a red gem in the center.

“Do you like it?”

I loved it.

They were grinning ear-to-ear as they put it on me, right under the collar of my shirt. I was just as happy as they were, and I couldn’t really understand why. It wasn’t the same as that joy I got from helping people, it was so much stronger.

I thought things would continue like this… but…

… soon, it all ended.

Ani had never told me what was wrong with them, and I was foolish to take their word for it when they said everything was fine.

They had a fatal disease associated with their blood, and it was slowly killing them. I discovered this only when they had fainted again and I had taken them to the hospital wing.

All the pieces came together. Why they were at a hospital in their world. Their death was inevitable, and they were always in pain. It must have been why they had been on that rooftop, or else they would have been confined in that human hospital until death…

Ani died the next day, and I was there when it happened, holding their hand.

… I don’t think I’ve ever been the same.

I can’t write about this anymore…

(… the bottom of the page is stained with teardrops…)

Bayne Peterson at Kristen Lorelllo Gallery

Bayne Peterson’s dyed plywood sculpture brings to mind an abacus, cairns, written script or a kid’s bead and wire toy. Now more complex in their patterning and overall shape, Peterson’s new sculptures at Kristen Lorello Gallery on the Lower East Side also owe their inspiration to still life painting and historical vessels. (On view through Oct 14th). Bayne Peterson, Untitled, dyed plywood, dyed epoxy, 15 1/8 x 21 ½ x 5 ¼ inches, 2017.

If I got the materials to do completely metal free jewelry (IE plastic ear ‘wires’ and seed bead* toggle or plastic breakaway clasps), would there be anyone interested in that? I’m tempted to get the stuff but I question if there would even be a market for it.
*Seed beads are tiny glass beads, though some varieties have a metal coating

It would be nice to have on hand, but I wonder if I’m not better off just getting more nickel free stuff. They’re not SUPER expensive, I’m more concerned about getting a ton of earring ‘wires’ that I wind up not using.

I know some people, like one of my buddies, can’t wear like 99% of the metals out there. But he’s a dude, and doesn’t wear earrings as far as I’m aware. I seem to be doing okay with just seed bead clasps for him.

Please tell me what you think, either by answering here or in an ask–breakaway clasps vs seed bead toggles, and if you or anyone you know would be interested in plastic ear ‘wires’. Necessary question mark?

Creativity Canna-Charm.

Creativity! We all have it! Even those who claim making things is impossible! Lies! You got it too! Creativity is the basis of ideas and free thinking, not always art. We all have items we can link to our creativity, this is a charm to help boost your creativity.

- Item you associate with creativity, could be a paint brush, fountain pen, keys from a keyboard, piano keys, make up brush, leather, metal, mechanical tool, etc. Anything that you feel you use in a creative process. Yes, symbolic items work just as well here.
- Items to decorate the charm, wire with beads, paint, stickers, etc.
- Clear Quartz, any size.
- The Magician Tarot card, you can find a picture of it online if you don’t have a deck. The Magician is the most creative card of the deck, a person with the ability to use things around them to form what they need/want. Adapting to situations and creating the best out of a situation.
- Sage incense, I recommend using a charcoal disc but please be careful and use burn safe bowl and area. Also if you only want to burn a little bit you can break the disc up so it wont burn for hours. You can always use a sage stick if you wish for this.
- Sativa Cannabis

- Decorate your items you picked as your charm, GET CREATIVE!
- Start burning your sage, wave the smoke around you and your charm.
- Place your tarot card on your altar space (or where ever you feel comfortable doing spell work) and your quartz crystal at the top of the card
- Place decorated item on your card and let the sage smoke fill the area.
- Begin smoke session, blowing the smoke on your item and card.
- Chant; “Creativity finds me, Creativity is me, Creativity flows from me.” as many time as you wish. I’d recommend the whole smoke session.
- Once the sage is done, safely dispose of the burning coal and you’re done!

Now you have a charm to reach for when you need to be extra creative! Never know when that draw for creative help will be needed.

-Your Friendly Canna-Witch-

I mentioned in this post  that I was planning on using some other beads from the assortment to make a variation on the themes of the same necklace. This is the first of two that I’ve completed so far. The large wire loops are bigger this time around because I used a pen instead of my bail-making pliers, and the pen was something like 10mm in diameter. I also used 22 gauge wire for the beaded links as suggested in the original pattern. 22 gauge is not a good gauge to use with large or heavy beads, or with particularly long links; it bends way too easily. Then again I was probably putting too many beads on any given link anyway this time around. Still, it doesn’t look too bad, I don’t think.
