Heda walked out of the same old shack, hissing at the brightness of the sun.
It was reflecting off the crystal stream in front of the cabin and it all fucking
shone into her face, blinding her to the steepness of the creaking wooden steps under her feet. She put her hand over her eyes, putting a cigarette
between her lips.
‘Nope!’ cried Laney, pulling it out and throwing it into the
bushes, ignoring Heda’s annoyed yelp. ‘Kids. We are going to meet the kids!’
‘You are now an influence! An educator! Take it seriously! Now come on! We are already running late!’
‘Fucking goodie-two-shoes influences,’ growled Heda under her breath, following her down the path toward the heart of the camp. ‘Happiness of others above my own. That’s what you are.’
Laney smiled sadly, ushering her forward. ‘Not at all, Hed. Not at all.’

‘No!’ cried Heda.
‘We can’t do this! There are too many of them, Heda! Too
many of them!’
Heda dragged her aside before she could alarm the army and
listened to her break apart.
‘This is awful! I’m such an awful person! I cannot take care
of these kids! I can hardly take care of myself! I forget to EAT, Heda! I can go
the entire day without EATING! What if I forget to give them food?!!!’
‘OMG, what if one of them falls into the lake and drowns!’
‘I know! I know! You’re right. I should just breathe. Breathe,
Laney. It will be alright! We can do this! You’re so motivational, Hed…’
‘We can do this! We are two headstrong women and we can…’
‘A toddler is escaping.’
Laney turned around with a squeak. She spotted the runaway
toddler and gave chase stumbling over the uneven ground. Heda watched her pursue the surprisingly fast tiny thing in her pastel pink pumps and sighed, shaking her head. ‘Well. This should be
