(Time-sensitive) while out shopping recently, I saw a flyer that said Target is hiring. I wanna apply so I can get monies to buy things to help me pass, but i'm unsure about their LGBT+ policy. as a small (5'6") soon to be 20 year old AFAB demiguy with autism, possible discrimination against disabled and LGBT+ people is a bit of an issue. short of inquiring about this at the job fair, any way I can find out? also, should I use my legal or preferred name if/when I apply? thanks to all in advance!

Kii says:

Target is a very LGBT-friendly company! On your application, you will need to use your legal name, because they will match your name with your bank info (for direct deposit) and SSN.

hi I’m kelsey.

I’m in a really bad situation at the moment and it’s really hard for me to even write this, I’m not one to usually ask or even open up when help is needed but this is really urgent and apparently this is all I have left.

So my mum was recently diagnosed with a disability called MS which is basically like brain damage and it affects the whole body, she had to leave her job because she’s in so much pain and she was on sick pay for a while which did help but now she’s not getting any money and even the government won’t give her money.

Romance, Representation And You

So the last post I reblogged got some interesting comments I want to touch on, namely people stating that they don’t dislike Romance because it’s fluffy and feel good, but because it is often sexist, misogynistic, ableist, heteronormative and woefully lacking in diversity, which yes, absolutely, yes. Those are entirely valid criticisms of the genre—indeed I find them to be valid of any genre, whether it’s sci-fi, fantasy, young adult or otherwise. There is a shocking lack of diversity in our fiction and media—and not because people don’t want it or aren’t trying to make it, but because publishing houses and media can’t see the co-relation between what their marketing teams are telling them, and the actual reality that of course straight white stories are selling the best, of course it is, because you won’t sell anything else, that’s why there’s no sales numbers for anything else.

I worked in a romance publishing house for a good few years, I also worked for their erotica team, and do you know, not once did I ever come across a manuscript with a disabled person? Not a single one. There was also never a manuscript that featured a character with mental illness who wasn’t the villain, or whose issues couldn’t be Fixed With Love™(*vomit*).

The few times a story featured non white characters, it was usually “The Best Friend Who Gives Sassy Real Advice”, or so horrifically racist that our modus operandi was to nuke it from the office servers rather than try and deal with it because how do you politely tell an author, hey, you’re a fetishistic piece of shit please find God and change the entirety of your story so we can print it, (Answer: you don’t there is no polite way to tell someone they are a  fetishistic piece of shit and you never want their work to darken your inbox ever again.) when you can instead say “Sorry, not what we’re looking for a the moment” and retreat to the relative safety of the slushpile where maybe, just maybe, a hidden gem awaits excavation.

And our publishing house prided itself on diversity because we had an LGBT section, and oh boy let me tell you I was so excited when I got moved over onto that side…only to realize, there’s no w/w fiction because “it doesn’t sell well” and 90% of the m/m fiction is being written by women for women and they fired the one gay author cause his work wasn’t “what was selling” and every bisexual character I ever encountered was either Actually Gay/Actually Straight, or surprise! The Evil Greedy Homewrecker who needs to pick a side, booo hiiiiss, grab your pitchforks and burn the witch.

And I remember, I remember looking to my senior editor who was also my friend at the time, a poly bisexual, mentally ill woman and saying “what the fuck Rebecca” (yes, her name was actually Becky) and she looked at me over our skype call and said “You want to keep your job? Deal with it.”

Because you see, Marketing reigns supreme, and Marketing doesn’t give a shit about people like you and me. It doesn’t care if the neurodivergent person wants to see people like them in fiction, it doesn’t care that people of color want to be more than just the friend/villain, they don’t care that there is more to LGBTQIA+ than the L and specifically the G, it doesn’t care if disabled people want to be represented as more than someone ele’s story arc prop. They don’t care they, don’t care, and do you know why so many publishing houses look down on indie publishing and self published authors and try to call them hacks? Because we don’t give a fuck that they don’t care and we’re doing what we want anyway.

Oh sure you get the usual “but the work is so unpolished, no one has vetted it, it’s just bad, this is why we need publishers to stop the crap from rising to the top”—and yet Fifty Shades of Grey still gets a multi-billion dollar production budget and to the top of the best seller list—do you see, where I am going with this? They’re not interested in selling the best they are just interested in selling, and we are living in a society that has a system designed specifically to a quite literally straight and narrow demographic. So of course XYZ stories sell well, of course they do, because that is where the vast majority of marketing goes, to make sure you buy into it. And Romance…Romance is a lucrative industry to be in if you can get the weight of that campaign behind you…but if you can’t? Well, not only do you have to compete with lack of funding and resources, but also the pervasive lie that because you’re not affiliated directly with X Publishing House or Y Agency, you are not good enough, and no one will want to read your story.

And that’s a bunch of baloney. It’s so much baloney you can slap it between two slices of bread and cover it in mustard because the whole thing is a ham.

Do you know what I would have loved growing up? (And still would) Stories about girls who liked people regardless of gender—and who wasn’t conflicted over it because people are people and gender is fluid and irrelevant to love. Stories about people with mental health issues, where the person is still loved and shown as functional, with their mental health issues, not despite. Stories about disabled and ill people who have fulfilling lives whose arc doesn’t revolve around being brave for simply existing or how much of a saint their families/loved ones are for putting up with them. And do you know what I get instead, even now as an adult who has worked in the industry that sells these stories? I get things like Fifty Shades of Domestic Abuse, and train wrecks like You Before Me where the death of the disabled person is seen as a romantic gesture of selflessness that sets the love interest free to fully live her life. HOW FUCKING FUCKED UP IS THAT. Oh you can argue with me all you want that wasn’t  Moyes intent when she was writing it, but it damn well was the end result.

Yes, Romance is lacking, and yes it needs revamped, it needs more cultural diversity, it needs more inclusion, it needs so many things—but it also needs for people to not want to not write for it because it’s “fluffy” and cheap, like somehow they are selling their souls away.

I’ve got friends who have written amazing, diverse stories told from their point of view…but they won’t ever get them published because as soon as you mention self publishing or the Romance industry they turn their noses up. And they’re shooting themselves in the foot in doing so, because there ain’t no way a story about XYZ is going to make it in a sci-fi house, no matter who much tech you add in. On the flipside of that, I’ve also got a friend who has written about her experiences as a Black queer disabled woman and it’s filled with relationships and great life stuff and so funny…but she can’t get it published anywhere because she’s been explicitly made to feel like she doesn’t belong in the genre because her stories are too complex, they’re too different they’re too comedic…too…too…too (the list goes on). And that’s awful because Romance is a genre that is primarily about people and if you as a Romance house are telling me you can’t sell a story about people, boy are we well and truly fucked.

The biggest criticism of the Romance genre shouldn’t be that it’s too damn happy and therefore unrealistic and nothing but fluff. What’s unrealistic is the complete lack of diversity and inclusion in the genre that makes it so alienating that a huge part of our society immediately feels like they don’t belong.

And that’s a bigger problem than fluff.

So great, yes fine, Romance isn’t for you, you can tell me all the time that you don’t like Romance and I will cheerfully talk to you about literally anything else. But don’t ever tell me you don’t like Romance because it’s simple and fluffy when there’s a whole wealth of actual problematic shit to dislike it for.

And to you, yes you, I’m talking to you. You with the idea in the back of your head and the worry that you’ll never be a Serious Author because all you want to write about is romance and people and angst and fluff and also thinking no one wants to read stories about people like you: take that idea and run with with it, learn from your experiences and keep doing it some more and maybe one day we’ll have the publishing industry we deserve that will acknowledge you. But until then: Rebel and Do It Anyway.

M/M romance recs

Here’s a list of my favourites! Organised by genre, with very broad summaries. All of them have HEA, all the m/m romances are the central ones.

Names in bold have POC protagonists, names in cursive have disabled protagonists (be it physical disability, mental illness or chronic illness). In series with multiple couples, it’s usually one or more.

Feel free to ask me about triggers for any of them!

  • Soldier’s Scoundrel by Cat Sebastian

Disabled regency war vet aristocrat decides to hang around a self-proclaimed ex-criminal helping those who need help. Said ex-criminal tries not to be charmed, ends up catching feelings instead

  • The Lawrence Browne Affair by Cat Sebastian

Confidence artist grows a conscience and angers dangerous people, so he needs to pose as a secretary to a scientifically minded, but eccentric Lord. Really beautiful portrayal of people on autistic spectrum and anxiety.

  • The Ruin of a Rake by Cat Sebastian

Posh and straight-laced gentleman has to help a famous scoundrel aristocrat to restore his image after a raunchy novel supposedly based on his exploits gets published. Contains ridiculous amounts of adorable kittens, tasty pastries and also wonderful portrayal of chronic illnesses

  • Sins of the Cities by KJ Charles

Trilogy set in victorian London, during the horrible London Fog of 1873. Three wonderful and diverse couples (one is half-indian with dyspraxia, one is non-binary, one was born with partial arm, one is near-sighted), murder mystery, fake mediums, lost earls, intrigue! It’s so good

  • Wanted, a Gentleman by KJ Charles

A delightful and frankly hilarious regency romp through British countryside. An unlikely couple of men need to travel to Gretna Green to save a young girl from potentially dangerous marriage. One of the protagonists is a black ex-slave merchant and the book touches upon his experiences (very respectfully!)

  • Society of Gentlemen by KJ Charles

A Society of gentlemen who like other gentlemen, centered around Lord Richard Vane and his friends and acquitances. Set during the radical uprising during the Regency, it has everything- friendships and families, sedition, intrigue, bookstores and good wine, valets being the mightiest strategists and amazing lovable radicals. This trilogy is honestly my favourite thing EVER.

  • Think of England by KJ Charles

Wounded during the Boer war, seemingly because of treason and betrayal, Archie Curtis sets off to a countryside mansion to get to the bottom of the matter. Completely unprepared for the task, he teams up with Daniel da Silva, the elegant jewish poet, who is much more capable than he seems. Absolutely delightful <333

  • Whyborne and Griffin series by Jordan L. Hawk

The adventures of a shy sorcerer linguistic nerd, his detective husband, the most badass lady archeologist (the actual love of my life) and more, as they save the world from otherworldly beings bent on destroying it. Will make you cry about found families, strong and wonderful friendships and broken people finding strength in each other. Has magic, archeology, monsters, reluctant travels, lesbian warrior fishes and the best ginger cat in the world.

  • Hexworld series by Jordan L. Hawk

Turn of the century New York witch detectives and their familiars must fight to uncover a conspiracy plan to change the world. Really amazing worldbuilding, the magic system is very cool and it will make you furious about the treatment of familiars. The familiars are, generally speaking, fucking hilarious.

  • A Charm of Magpies by KJ Charles

Filthy-mouthed dominant earl falls in love with a stubborn and heroic wizard, together they create magic. A lot of people want that magic though, and it gets ugly. First KJ book I’ve ever read and I fell in love instantly. Has two more books set in the same universe with different protagonists and those are also amazing. (Rag and Bone is the one with black protagonist)

  • A Death by Silver by Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold

University-era friends need to figure out their confused emotions, while investigating a murder that brings out bad memories. Very good and soft, with even a better sequel

  • Downtime by Tamara Allen

When in London for a case, FBI agent gets sent back in time to Victorian London. While there, he finds out magic is real. Decides that since he’s there anyway, might as well investigate who Jack the Ripper was. Very sweet and soft

  • Restless Spirits by Jordan L. Hawk

A medium and a scientist bent on proving said medium to be a fraud get chosen to be in a contest to prove which side is better. They end up having to team up to save lives of people around.

  • The Secret Casebook of Simon Feximal by KJ Charles

Journalist and writer Robert Caldwell has been a close friend and lover of ghost hunter Simon Feximal for years and has been chronicling their adventures. Now, he finally writes the true story of their life together. Warning: this book will absolutely ruin you for years to come. You will be a mess whenever you think of the book and you will enjoy every second of it.

  • Green Men by KJ Charles

Set in the world of The Secret Casebook of Simon Feximal. Only few years after WW1, Britain is still recovering from the war. Having lost an entire generation of youth and most of the sorcerers the country had, those left are completely unprepared for what’s to come. Wonderful characters, the softest romance I’ve read possibly ever and beautifully melancholic. Best KJ book, in my opinion.

  • Shadow of the Templar by M. Chandler

FBI agent and his team are tasked with catching a famous international art thief, they end up kinda sorta accidentally adopting him instead. One of the funniest series I’ve ever read, honestly.

  • Cut&Run by Abigail Roux and Madeleine Urban

The incredible adventures on an unlikely pair of FBI agents go from enemies to lovers. Includes serial killers, undercover luxury yacht trips, tiger trafficking, drugs, marine buddies and one of the genuinely best character developments I’ve read. Warning, the first book is a bit shit. The rest is absolutely incredible though.

  • The General and the Horse-lord by Sarah Black

Retired ex-military lovers need to figure out what to do with their relationship, now that they’re civillians. A soft look at older gay people still figuring out their sexuality.

  • The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic

Neil Josten is on the run from his mafia murderous father and gets signed up for a professional college sports team, while people are still after him. It’s a really powerful emotional journey, but contains a large amount of a very triggering content, so be safe please.

  • THIRDS series by Charlie Cochet

FBI like team consisting of shifters and their partners must investigate conspiracy and threats against the new shifter population. Ridiculously hilarious at times, absolutely heartbreaking at other.

  • Deep Magic by Gillian St. Kevern

A story steeped in welsh folklore, with beautiful mermaid princes and knights who will save them. Shows the power stories have to change our lives. Plus it’s free so what are you waiting for?

  • Psycop series by Jordan Castillo Price

A medium detective and his partner investigate a series of supernatural crimes. People are horrible, corporations are horrible, ghosts are horrible and lbr, everything is kinda horrible, but it gets better.

  • Wriggle and Sparkle by Megan Derr

The adventures of Lynn the Kraken shifter and Anderson the unicorn shifters, their detective careers, and their life together. Honestly adorable. And when I say adorable, I mean sparkles-on-rainbow-filled-cupcake kind of adorable. Also, Lynn’s gender-presentation is fluid and it’s absolutely wonderful.

  • Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat

Prince gets betrayed and sent as a slave to his sworn enemy, they end up working together to save their countries and fall in love. The best enemies to lovers example. Has amazing and complex politics, unreliable narrator and great worldbuilding. You’ve probably already heard of this book, but if you’re worried about triggers, please ask someone who actually read it, because there’s a lot of misinformation flying around.

  • Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling

The fantasy series of your dreams. There is ancient evil being revived, war is coming, everyone is bisexual and the kingdom is ruled by an ancient line of warrior queens. Everyone is wonderful and charming, characters are complex and the story will make you laugh and cry.

  • The God Eaters by Jesse Hajicek

Western-style world, where gods are reborn as humans, and one of them tried to control the whole world. It doesn’t go exactly as he planned.

  • Lord of the White Hell by Ginn Hale

Teenage genius inventor gets accepted to a prestigious boarding school in enemy territory. His room-mate might be demon-possesed and there’s some evil magic lurking around.

  • Champion of the Scarlet Wolf by Ginn Hale

Somewhat sequel to Lord of the White Hell. Disgraced noble travels to a faraway country, where he saves an injured dog. Turns out the dog isn’t just a dog, magic is everywhere around them and there’s a witch war coming.

  • Fairytales Slashed vol. 1 by Megan Derr

A collection of gay fairy tales. All kinds of stories with all kinds of characters (my favourite one is the one with the jester <333)

  • Dance with the Devil by Megan Derr

Adventures of half-ghost detective, his demon husband, imp partner, witch colleague and a vampire. Really cute and intriguing, with mysteries and conspiracies.

  • Dance in the Dark by Megan Derr

Set in the same universe as Dance with the Devil (there’s an entire series). Human son of a dracula becomes a detective, moves out to the city to help others, and gains a lover who only visits him in the dark.

  • The Rapier Brothers by Megan Derr

A collection of short stories centered around swordsmen. Three different couples, three really cute stories. Love it.

Oh thank god an actual sane person in the fandom. I got into Rick and Morty recently and started looking around the fanworks and jesus christ on a pogostick. It's like there's nothing but incest art/literature. Just pages and pages and pages of it. Are there any blogs or fanfics you could recommend? I'm just so tired of going through massive landfills of fetishized creepiness looking for something decent to enjoy.

Omg, right?? (and wtf I thought I turned off anon, how did this get here…???) And yeah, most of tumblr and AO3′s rnm content is pure garbage, and not even the ironically good garbage, it’s literally all terrible shit. But since you somehow managed to get past my disabled anon settings, here’s a list:

GEN BLOGS: blogs that either create or reblog gen stuff, and contain over 50% rnm content, and may feature crossovers:

http://beta-19.tumblr.com (lol duh)

http://nearshotarts.tumblr.com (less active lately)

http://schwubadub.tumblr.com (less actively lately)

http://gintoki23.tumblr.com (omg how did I forget this one?!)

GEN FICS: not all of these recommendations have either been finished or updated in a while, but they’re good reads nonetheless; also, some are NSFW but do not contain fucking dumbass gross shit like pedoincest.

https://archiveofourown.org/users/antsinmyeyesjohnson (comedy, updates pending)

An emptiness consumes you – by ubik (angst by short)

My Empire of Dirt – by mugsandpugs (angsty but short)

D-22 – by beta_19 (Rnm OCs, in progress)

Shiprotica – by beta_19 (Rick only, NSFW)

https://archiveofourown.org/users/stanchezsloppyseconds  (tons of Gen Citadel fic with Rick OCs)

Firesale by beta_19 (lol how did I forget my own fic??)

At the moment I can’t think of any other RnM-only fic; most of my bookmarks are #stanchez, actually! What’s sad is that these are the only good gen fics I could find that weren’t just long slogs of pointless angst– 99% of RnM content on AO3 is awful.

Good luck, anon!

Anyone else with a mental illness really get down on themselves about how it affects their activism? (I’m sure aaalllll kinds of disabilities have a similar experience, please comment if you do, I’m just specifying mental illness in relation to myself because it’s something I personally have, but not other disabilities or conditions.)

Like all I want is for my support and #resistance to be practical and NOT performative but on bad days sometimes reading articles and sharing and showing support to other activists is all I can do and it makes me feel really fake to be honest.

Like… no matter what disability or illness related-reasons causes it…

What if sometimes you can’t go out and march because your bones feel like they’ll collapse or being around so many people sends your PTSD/stress through the roof?

What if sometimes you can’t donate any more money to your favourite causes or ANY causes because having below a certain amount in your account gives you panic attacks and 24/7 anxiety?

What if sometimes you dodge the political society people on campus (the ones you love and agree with) because you’re so overloaded or manic that you can’t even bear the thought of a conversation?

What if sometimes you are totally taken down by the intellectual, physical and emotional labour of calling and messaging politicians and representatives to give us rights we should already have?

What if sometimes you have to disconnect from any awareness of worldwide tragedy and injustice for hours or days at a time because the level of catastrophic depression in your mind LITERALLY puts your life in danger if you don’t wallpaper yourself in peace and hope for a while?

What if sometimes you get sick to death of the ableism in activist circles (or ANY circles), from the tiny microaggressions to the huge inequalities and it makes you drown in negativity?

What if your condition means all these things apply all the time, not just sometimes?

And how do you tell the difference between your genuine issues and you making excuses, to hold yourself accountable for doing what you want others to do, even though it’s never easy?

All I want is a better world but holy hell does all this get me down. It feels like I almost only ever have the energy, means, money, time or literal mental ability to talk the talk and not walk the walk. I hate it.

But I survive because I know I’m not alone, and that my struggles are part of my fight, not the end of it. Mad love to you all.

anonymous asked:

hey can you please point me in the direction of good tips for writing blind characters? or like things *not* to do, that would be good too.

here are avia’s top ten tips for writing blind characters!

tip #1: be an actual blind person

tip #2: if you’re not an actual blind person, pay me

tip #3: no seriously hire a diversity consultant, aka me, to read over everything you’ve done and tell you what to fix to make it less shitty

tip #4: this should be fucking obvious but if you’re writing a blind character whatever story this is needs to be accessible to blind audiences. looking at you, star wars. and avatar. and the way he looks. and daredevil. and the daredevil comics. and the xmen comics. and–

tip #5: blindness, like any disability, is not a tragedy. it can occur in a traumatizing fashion which may reasonably distress a character and thats fine, but it’s not the end of the goddamn world and acting like it is hurts actual real life blind people. if you’re making a character go blind, show them coming to terms with it and moving on with their life

tip #6: white canes are great and should be used. in the US you can get a free cheap one from the NFB, even. theyre way more common than guide dogs and way more useful than shit like that terrible “seeing eye robot” or whatever that one teenager invented or like, sonar glasses. training to use a white cane isnt a requirement or whatever but it’s called O&M.

tip #7: assistive tech exists. there’s apps like taptapsee and bespecular that you should check out. this shit called OCR can scan written words on paper and usually get you something vaguely resembing it in a digital format. screenreaders like JAWS and thunder exist. there’s a screenreader on apple products called VoiceOver and it’s great. these technologies can be used with audio or with refreshable braille displays.

tip #8: on the topic of assistive tech, i really strongly suggest that you stick to technologies that either exist or are recognizably similar to technologies that exist, or else your representation is fucking useless

tip #9: cure narratives are bad!!! don’t cure your characters, just don’t…..fucking…..do it. i will find you and i will kill you my fucking self don’t play this game with me im not kidding

tip #10: nobody fucking touches faces and the only reason to pull this move at all is to smack a bitch in the fucking face

Hello, I hope you're well. I'd like to ask you about conflict! I've read lots in writing books about conflict. I know conflict is needed in a story and for the characters. But, my problem is, even though I kind of understand conflict I don't know how best to use it. I was wondering if you could provide breakdowns, maybe from your stories or other published stories. Sometimes seeing things spelled out helps me. It's okay if this is not possible. Thank you for your time, and for this fab blog í ½

Aww, thank you so much, love!  This is a great question.  In the writing community, we talk a lot about conflict without really defining what it is – and further, what types of conflict there are.  So I’ll list and explain them, as well as give some examples.

Types of Conflict (and Their Strengths)

There are five main types of conflict in fiction:

  1. Man vs. Man – Situational or relationship conflict between two or more characters.  (Think The Dark Knight or Beauty and the Beast.)
  2. Man vs. Self – Otherwise known as “internal conflict”.  Conflict between a character’s opposing feelings.  (Think Revenge of the Sith or Silver Linings Playbook.)
  3. Man vs. Nature – Conflict between the main character/s and the elements – providing for the self or defending against animals, weather, or illness.  (Think Life of Pi or Robinson Crusoe.)
  4. Man vs. Society – Conflict between the main characters and the “system” – the government or ruling majority.  (Think The Hunger Games or Hidden Figures.)
  5. Man vs. Technology/Supernatural – Conflict between the main character and a non-human force.  (Think 2001: A Space Odyssey or Gremlins.)

Like the different tenses or POVs, none of these options are inherently better than the others – but they do work better for different stories, so it’s important to know what they are and how to make the most of them.

I’ll now outline each style briefly, save for #5, which is fairly self-explanatory.  If you have a question about this style for any reason, though, let me know and I can make a separate post.

1. Man vs. Man

Man vs. Man conflict is the most easily recognizable conflict in fiction, because your characters are always aware of it happening.  There are three types of this conflict:

  1. Situational M-vs-M – Two characters have opposing desires or responsibilities, but only one of them can get what they want.  Leslie wants to build her park, but Ben wants to cut funding.  Wreck-It Ralph wants a medal, but Vanellope wants to use it to qualify for racing.
  2. Moral M-vs-M – Characters have a moral disagreement that must be resolved in order to maintain a relationship or make an important decision.  Luke wants to change Vader for good, but Vader wants to change Luke for evil.  Tony feels the government should keep the Avengers in check, but Steve thinks they should maintain individual control.
  3. Personal M-vs-M – Characters in a relationship, romantic or platonic, disagree on some issue or hurt each other in a way that threatens their relationship.  Noah wants to be with Allie, but Allie feels a commitment to Lon.  Rayna wants to marry Deacon, but Deacon can’t overcome his alcoholism.

Man vs. Man conflict is most popular in romance stories, as well as Good vs. Evil stories involving heroes and villains.  It’s best for stories that are character-driven, or employ themes of battling ideals.  This conflict is shown through arguments, escalating to Big Decisions with long-term consequences.  Here is a post on how to resolve interpersonal conflict.

2. Man vs. Nature

This kind of conflict is relatively straightforward, although it covers a variety of plots:

  1. Survival – The main character/s are left to the elements and must keep themselves fed, sheltered, and defended against anything that would harm them.  This is one of multiple conflicts in The Hunger Games, most prominent when Katniss and the tributes are in the arena – and during this time, Man vs. Man and Man vs. Society are also present.
  2. Illness – The main character/s are ill and must battle their illness – if treatable, battling for survival, and if terminal, coping with the inevitable.  This is a primary conflict in The Fault in Our Stars.
  3. Beast – This is kinda like Man vs. Man in that it is very singular, based on a conflict between two forces: a human and some sort of “beast.”  Of course, this beast doesn’t have to be an animal – it could also be a natural disaster, like a storm, or a spreading disease.  Anything from a white whale to a pandemic qualifies as “the beast”.

Man vs. Nature conflict is often coupled with Man vs. Self to create the best survival stories, facing topics of vulnerability, isolation, and fatality.  This conflict is best shown in sequences of varying “wins” and “losses” to Mother Nature, each one increasingly strengthening the character, as well as teaching them something about themselves or life.

3. Man vs. Self

This is one of my favorite styles of conflict, because it requires the deepest character development and provokes more philosophical questions.  The most common internal conflicts:

  1. Head vs. Heart – A tale as old as time: your MC’s heart is telling them what they want, but their mind is telling them the opposite.  This is sparked by an inciting incident (e.g. a new opportunity or love interest), which is battled back and forth internally until a decision is reached.  Typically the heart is painted as the right decision, but it can really go either way.
  2. Self vs. Self-Image – In this style, your character battles with themselves over their very idea of self – who they believe they should be versus who they instinctively are.  This is also perpetuated by outside forces, such as family members or love interests, who offer their input and confuse the MC.
  3. Faith vs. Science – This title is figurative, not literal.  Basically, this is a conflict in which your MC struggles with their beliefs (political, religious, etc.) when new information is introduced.  Life-changing events spark a question, which the character at first avoids, then assesses, until they arrive at a new conclusion or identity.

Man vs. Self is best for stories that tackle social, political, or moral issues.  It is often couples with Man vs. Nature or Man vs. Man, as a character’s other conflicts cause them to reassess their own beliefs, desires, or identity.  I believe, personally, that all stories should include some kind of Man vs. Self conflict, since the MC should be changed by the end of any novel.

4. Man vs. Society

This is a popular conflict in modern literature, especially with the rise of dystopia (and the state of unrest in social politics today).  There are two different portrayals of this conflict:

  1. Individual Conflict – In this conflict, one character, by some new circumstances, is put into a new role that “separates” them from society (e.g. they become disabled or discover a disability, they experience their first instance of victimhood or discrimination, etc.) and find a new moral position alternative to society.  This conflict is used in Mean Girls, as Cady Heron finds herself on multiple tiers of the social hierarchy at school and must decide where she aligns herself.
  2. Organized Conflict – This is the Man vs. Society we recognize from Star Wars, The Hunger Games, Divergent, and other “Us vs. Them” stories.  This can be led by Man vs. Man conflict between the leaders, such as with Harry and Voldemort, or Gandalf and Saruman.

Man vs. Society is great for high fantasy, dystopia, or any story central on social conflict.  This conflict drives most antiheroes or spy/assassin characters with no fitted role in the system.

So your first step is to decide on one or a few types of conflict to include in your story – not so few that the story idles, but not so many that there are no “resting points” in the novel.  Once you’ve picked them out, take some time to outline how they’ll develop.  Write it down and keep it as a reference for later, as you’re working through the story.

That’s all I have for now!  If you have any further questions, hit me up and I’ll respond shortly ♥️️  Happy writing!

Top 10 Must Read Ichihime Fanfics

Multi-chapter edition! These are in particular the fanfics I believe are a must, perhaps even a requirement, for any true Ichihime fan to read! Fics are mostly rated T - M, with varying language and violence, as well as sexual content.

All fanfics are complete, apart from one.

Fanfictions listed here are found on FF.net, and are in no particular order.

La Belle et la Bete by Enelya87 - 19th century France. An AU Ichihime story based on Beauty and the Beast. “He lifted his hand and dragged a single claw down her cheek and throat, careful not to break the delicate skin.” Language and Lemons.
This is one of the first Ichihime fanfics I ever found, and I remember staying up a full day for the first time in my life when I first read this. Written back in 2009, with 15 chapters and a total of 131,138 words, its a very capturing read!

Office Romance by Enelya87 - They are separated until Isshin pulls a fast one on Ichigo and brings the two together again. Except for one, slight obstacle.
Because we all need a sexy little fic involving Ichigo trying to keep his cool with Orihime strutting around in a pencil skirt. Jealousy, lace panties, and a not-so-tough “rival” for Orihime’s heart. Written in 2009, 5 chapters, 20,061 words.

Yakusoku Shitara byle.etoile - [If You Promise] Protect me if you want. Stay by my side if you wish. My only request is that you don’t cry for me when I’m gone. Instead, smile in memory of me. IchiHime Royal Realm fanfic.
I have read this so many times in the past year alone, but never get tired of it. It flips between Orihime and Ichigo’s P.o.v. and is based around the idea “what if Orihime was the key”. le.etoile and Ichihime? Duh! Written in 2009, with 11 chapters and 51,212 words, you can almost taste their yearning for each other.

hardboiled strawberries, smiling halcyon by alice hattercandy“Twice, you almost lost her. Her brother. Aizen. Who do you need next to finally gather your balls— if you have any— and tell what you need to say to her? Don’t wait for the third time. Because bad things come in three.” Days later, it happened.
Do you wanna cry? This is one of those fics you will read over and over, forgetting the ending not because it is forgettable - it is the most memorable - but because it will pull you in just as hard as when you first read it. (Or, it might be because of the tearful trauma.) Alice Hattercandy pretty much wrote the book for Ichihime fanfiction in my opinion. Written in 2009, 24 chapters, 104,971 words.

that beautiful girl, she’s a beautiful girl by alice hattercandy- CRACK. But because he was Ichigo and she was Orihime, nothing seemed to get right in their love story.
I think about this fic literally every day(I whisper the title under my breath way too much) The angsty Ichigo is my favorite Ichigo aside from the protective one, and boy does Alice capture them both! Its cute, and Ichigo is clueless even when he knows. Written in 2010, 3 chapters, 6,472 words.

Long Way Down - by le.etoile- Two entirely different people somehow intertwined by similar pasts. With one boy disabled and the girl with a secret, how will these two not-so-strangers learn to trust and fight against an unknown force together?
An AU, where in Ichigo is disabled and is still more hot/sweet than my delicate heart can handle. I have never found another fic like it. Orihime is so sweet I could cry! Drama? Check! Written in 2010, 17 chapters, 52,375 words.

Tainting the Roses Red by Child of the Ashes - Ichigo knew he could be thick headed. He almost always learned things the hard way, but about this, he couldn’t be making mistakes. His hollow was playing a dangerous game, one that somehow involved Inoue.
You might scream. Why is entirely up to you. In which Hichigo starts to surface more frequently as his relationship grows stronger with Orihime, and new faces stir up trouble. Written in 2010, 25 chapters, 107,347 words.

The Pain of Remembrance by halfdemonfan- It was amazing how one memory could change a person’s perspective. Canon to volume 404.
(Or, episode 300) Featuring a somewhat different end to the Aizen fight. We get to see the soft progression of our favorite couples relationship with a twist of Ichigo angst. Written in 2011, 28 chapters, 154,461 words.

The Most Dangerous Things by Child of the Ashes - In which Orihime runs and Ichigo chases.
My smutty love! Child of the Ashes is another notable writer for the Ichihime community. In this, we experience a sex savvy Ichigo frustrated with the sex curious Orihime. Written in 2011, 9 chapters, 31,128 words.

Bakery Department 12 by CoffeeBooks - ABCookies meets it’s end and Orihime finds herself a new position. It’s still a bakery but different from what she’s used to. Will she be able to handle working with the new employee?
Its cute, its light, and Ichigo is only subtle enough for Orihime to not get. Go figure right? Pining Ichigo is the best. Written in 2012, 12 chapters, 22,245 words.

Hidden Screams - Star Slightly To The Right - “Kurosaki-san, right? I know you do not know me, but I was wondering if you could help me with something.”
AU. I mentioned this wasn’t in any order, but I suppose I lied. Because this is incomplete, it will be the 11th in this top 10.
This is my all time favorite fic, even if incomplete. Ichigo is so just… bad ass, and that sort of sexy-rough my heart cannot handle it maturely. And Orihime, precious Princess she is, good lord! There are a thousand things I could say for this story, but I’d have to make a separate post for it entirely. You MUST read this one! Written in 2012, currently 20 chapters, 101,428 words, last updated November 10th 2016.

Hi! I was wondering if you could write something where Harry and Y/N can't have a child together so they adopt a baby? You can really make it what you want. Thanks❤

"I saw this cot today. It looked very lovely.“ Harry mumbled as he had his head on your chest and his arms wrapped around you while you played with his hair.

You chuckled, rolling your eyes. “Did you now?”

Harry hummed.

Ever since you got married a year ago, Harry was always bringing up the baby topic. “You’d make a great mum”, “I’ll be a cool dad, yeah?” and the list goes on.

“You know, we’ve been married for a year now, baby, and I think the house is getting too spacious for just us. Imagine this, waking up to happy giggles, a girl with your eyes and my hair or a mumma’s boy. It’s nice, isn’t it?” Harry asked, looking up at you with a hopeful smile.

You sighed, “It is. But can we talk about this tomorrow?”

Harry gave you a side smile before nodding, getting off your chest and sleeping on his side of the bed instead. You sighed before turning off the lamp beside you and sleeping on the idea of having a family with Harry.

The next day, you spent it pampering Harry. To say he was confused would be an understatement but he was happy about it. When night came, you sent him to the grocery store to get you tampons  - despite not being on your period but he didn’t need to know that now – before you changed into the newly bought lingerie you had bought weeks ago. You sat on bed, practicing a posture.

You settled for just resting on your knees in the dimmed room, growing excited when you heard him enter. “Baby? I got it!” Harry announced before racing upstairs and opening the door. His jaw hung open, looking at you in awe.

“So, baby making?” You asked with a bite of your lip.

Needless to say, Harry took it upon himself to put the bun in oven that night.

The next day, you both woke up exhausted but smiley as you remembered last night’s events and rounds.

“How was I?” Harry asked with a smirk as he propped himself on his elbow, looking down at you.

You blushed, swatting his chest lightly. “Shut it, Styles.”

“You were phenomenal. All the right m-“

“Oh my, stop.” You giggled, hiding your face with your hands. When yours and Harry’s laughter died down, you looked at him. “You know I won’t get the baby from first time, right? I mean, that’s what my sister told me anyway.”

“You could just ask for another round, baby.” Harry grinned before tackling you.

It was confusing to both of you. 6 months of trying and you still weren’t showing any signs of being pregnant. You were getting frustrated. You and Harry had done everything; from round throughout the day to spicing things a little. You read about it, asked your mothered friends but everything and everyone were pointing towards one direction; seeing a doctor.

“I’m scared.” You said quietly, giving Harry’s hand a squeeze as you sat in the waiting room.

“I’m here, love. It’s going to be okay.” Harry cooed, wrapping his arm around your shoulders and giving your temple a kiss.

“Mr. and Mrs. Styles?”

You and Harry stood up, Harry’s hand on your back as you both entered the doctor’s office with your blood test results folder in your hand. You greeted the doctor whose name was Rachel before sitting down and giving her the folder. You fiddled with your fingers nervously, trying to copy Harry’s supportive smile but you knew that something just wasn’t right and your doctor’s apologetic look proved it.

“Can I have yours, Mr. Styles, please?” The doctor asked politely, opening her palm.

“Of course.” Harry said quietly, giving her his folder.

She opened it, eyes traveling down the results before she closed the folder and sighed, taking off her eyeglasses. “I’m sorry to have unfortunate news,” She began. Your heart dropped, barely feeling Harry’s concerned eyes on you. “Mrs. Styles, it appears that you’re infertile.”

Your breath got caught in your throat, feeling your heart tighten and your eyes to water. “What?” You managed to choke out quietly.

“Judging from the results, it’s in your genes so any operation won’t be successful. Mr. Styles, you’re healthy and well,” She gave Harry a small smile before turning to look at you, “I’m very sorry, Mrs. Styles.”

You were sad, devastated. You felt like this was a punishment. Who wouldn’t want to be a mother? Hell, who wanted to be forced not to be a mother? You were sad not only for your disability but because you felt like this was unfair to Harry. So leaning your head on Harry’s car window, tears falling, you felt nothing but sadness. Harry, too, felt sad; but he knew you needed him. Now more than ever.

Once you reached your house, you walked inside, plopping on the couch and burying your head in your hands, sobbing. Harry was instantly by your side, wrapping his arms around you and rocking you gently. “I love you. I love you so much.” He whispered in your hair as you hugged him, moving to place yourself on his lap.

“I’m so sorry.” You cried out.

“What are you sorry for? This is out of your hand but it’s okay, we still have each other, yeah?” Harry said gently, cupping your face in his hands. You sniffled and nodded, calming down as Harry pecked every inch of your face. “I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

Somehow, after telling yours and Harry’s families about the news and receiving nothing but love from them, the fans knew; the world knew. You were overwhelmed by the supportive replies and messages and you and Harry were both thankful for it. A month later, a month full of nothing but love and assurance and thinking, you had an idea; one you didn’t know how Harry would react to it.

So when Harry returned home from a studio session at 8 and found dressed up with his favorite home cooked meal and his favorite scented candle on the table, he was amused and surprised. “Oh shit, is tonight important? Your birthday isn’t until De-“ You cut him off with a kiss.

“You haven’t forgotten anything.” You said quietly with a warm smile. “Why don’t we eat? I’m sure you’re starving.”

Still surprised, Harry sat down and began to eat slowly. He watched you eat, thinking of all scenarios. He put his fork down, wiping his mouth with the napkin. “Alright, what is it?”

You chuckled, wiping your mouth. “You caught me.”

“Always do. Now tell me.” He smiled.

“I was thinking,” You began, tracing figures on the tablecloth with your fingers to avoid Harry’s gaze, “We can…adopt?”

Harry’s eyes widened, “A-Adopt? Adopt a child?”

You rolled your eyes with a smile, “No, a dog. Yes, Haz, a child.”

“Yes! Oh my god, yes!” Harry grinned, standing up and walking towards you, pulling you up before pressing his lips on yours in a hard kiss.

It didn’t take long for you and Harry to be on it, it was the following day. You both sat on the mat with 10 other kids, ages ranging from 2 years to 7 as you all joked and told stories. However, it was one girl that stood out the most for you and Harry. Hell, it was like she really was your daughter.

She had gorgeous hazel eyes, curly hair, olive skin and a bubbly smile. She had a wise and smart personality but she knew how to have fun, seeming to love you and Harry. She was only 2 years old and went by the name “Coco”.

“I love chocolate and my teddy bear calls me Coco.” She had said.

When Harry asked the manager for the little girl’s real name, you both knew it was Charlotte.

You, Harry and Coco were taken to a different room for privacy to have a word.

You smiled at Coco who sat on your lap, playing with your hair. “Would you like to come with us, Coco? Live with us?” You asked softly.

“Forever?” She gasped.

“And ever, love.” Harry grinned, stroking her hair.

“So,” She grinned gradually, “Mummy and Daddy?”

Harry smiled, looking at you as you looked at the girl lovingly. “Mummy and Daddy.” He confirmed.

I was wondering if any of the mods who have had/are planning on having top surgery, have any tips of how they saved or are saving for their surgery cost? Especially tips that as a 16 I can still do with my limited options. Thank you! :D

Lee says:

What a perfect question for me! I got a part-time job at 16 working as a page at my local public library for minimum wage 3 hours a week to start saving money for top surgery. Now I’m 18 and I still work there but I work 16 hours a week, I have $8,000 saved, and I will be getting top surgery this fall.

I know it isn’t possible for everyone to save money because their parents may take their money, or they have disabilities preventing them from working at all, or there are other things in their life they need the money for more urgently, but if you can save, do it! You don’t know what your insurance situation will be like so better safe than sorry. This is an example of how much top surgery can cost without insurance.

The below tips should help you whether you’re saving for surgery or hormones or breast forms or a binder because saving is saving no matter what you’re saving for.

Step one: Open a bank account. You should tell your parents you want to get a savings account to start saving money and so you can learn more about how banking works and selecting a bank if you don’t already have a bank account open.

You don’t actually earn much in interest, but it’s important to have because it is the most secure way to keep your money, you can keep track of how much is there, and it discourages you from spending it because you have to physically go to the bank and withdraw the money and see your balance lower.

You don’t need to have a bank account if your parents won’t let you, you can keep the money in your closet or whatever as long as you’re saving. My parents didn’t really know that I was saving my money, and if they asked I just said that I’m being financially responsible and may need the money in college.

Step two: Keep track of how much money you spend. When you buy something, ask for a receipt. You can look for apps that can help you keep track of how much you’re spending, or just use a spreadsheet on the computer. Calculate how much money you’ve spent at the end of the month, and where it went to.

Are you spending it on food when you hang out with friends? Video games? Clothes? Avocado toast? Comic books? Now that you know how much you’re spending, see if there’s any area where you can reduce your spending. You should make a budget and allocate a certain amount of money to use each month. Maybe you won’t spend more than $20 a month on going out with friends, and once you’ve hit that limit you have to exert self-control to stop yourself from continuing to spend.

Put any extra money in the bank so you won’t spend it and remember you’re doing this for yourself so you’ll be able to get top surgery quicker. If you don’t save money, it might take longer until you’re able to afford it.

Step three: Save any money you get from birthdays and holidays. If you are lucky enough to have an allowance, save all of your allowance. If you ever find money on the ground, save it.

Step four: Get a source of income. Find a part-time job!  In my state, you can start working most jobs at 16, but you should look at your state’s laws. Make a resume and send it out, fill out applications for places that are hiring, send out word that you are looking to babysit, ask people if they want you to rake their leaves, save your birthday money, do odd chores, tutor elementary school kids, shovel snowy driveways, babysit, sell crafts on Etsy, do whatever you can do to earn a few dollars- then save it!

It’s okay to only work a few hours a week; I started by working 3 hours a week! Take what you can get, and do what you can handle. I wasn’t capable of working a lot of hours, and that’s okay! Don’t overextend yourself- you shouldn’t work more than 20 hours a week max, and 10 hours is the ideal. You can get books from your local library on getting a job and on building job skills, and you can google whatever you’re stuck on like how to write a cover letter.

Wacom Cintiq Pro 13 Review

I will just list everything that I cared but couldn’t found enough information from other existing reviews. They are in the order as I came across them during the initial setup until it fully works. (2017-06-26)

2 cables

  1. One for data, one for power
  2. Both are USB-C
  3. One cable on each side, sticking out like a demon, not OCD friendly
  4. USB 3.0 from computer cannot power this thing, so why USB-C?
  5. Power adapter is bulky, larger than the ipad’s.

Wacom Link Adapter

  1. It combines 1 mini-dp and 1 USB 3.0 into its data USB-C port
  2. I have to buy a converter cable because my GPU has full-sized DP port.

The Screen (Drawing)

  1. Improved parallax, but pen tip still is not where your cursor is.
  2. More friction than any previous Wacom products.
  3. Has 2 nice, sturdy, metal kick-stand. The lower edge of the screen connects with the desktop in a very comfortable way.
  4. I feel much better to draw on Pro 13 than 13HD. It’s not about the new pen.

The Screen (Display)

  1. Not very reflective, not distracted by ceiling light
  2. Too grainy, worse than 13HD, aggressive color dispersion
  3. So when you move your head, you see the grains on screen dispersing rainbow like color. Very distracting at first, can get used to.
  4. sRGB 90% (sRGB mode, Calibrated as 100 cd/m^2 at 38% Brightness, factory is 75%, 13HD was 85% sRGB). Color temperature is 6400K. Greyscale response curves are not very straight. Must better black-white contrast than 13HD, 13HD was very bad. Pro 13′s color is acceptable, but not as good as I expected. Can’t trust its color for serious works.
  5. No backlight flicker at any brightness level. This means all brightness level are useful now. 13 HD had very bad flickers I had to use it on 100% brightness all time.

The Buttons

  1. Zero delay power button
  2. All buttons except the first one are not really driver buttons, they requires Windows driver support, which means they don’t work under Linux and they are not programmable.
  3. Yep, the toggle touch switch requires Windows driver you Linux hippies.
  4. To disable Cintiq Pro 13′s touch under Linux, in terminal, execute: xinput set-prop ‘Wacom Co.,Ltd. Cintiq Pro 13 Touch Finger touch’ 'Device Enabled’ 0
  5. The “tablet” button doesn’t turn your workstation into a tablet, Cintiq just turns off its screen and pretend to be a over-sized Intuos Pro. It doesn’t do it through Windows driver, so it’s a real hard button. However, if you press that thing under Linux…

Display Port + Linux

  1. DP can do auto power down, but Linux don’t like it. Many distro has weird behaviors after you switch off a DP display then switch it back on.
  2. Cintiq Pro 13 does auto power down by default. When it does not detect signal from computer, it quickly powers off. Sometimes Linux fails to detect it during boot up with auto power off enabled.
  3. That “tablet“ button, because it switch off screen and forces the digitizer to map on the standalone monitor, it can cause Pro 13 to switch ON/OFF by itself like crazy, or sometimes the pen cannot be mapped back to Pro 13.
  4. Oh that zero-delay power switch on Pro 13, too. Now you understand how dangerous it is under Linux.

The “New” Pen

  1. I think they are functionally the same as the old models since Intuos 4
  2. It’s lighter than Intuos 4 pens, same weight as Cintiq 13HD’s.
  3. It feels cheaper than anything Intuos Pro pens before.
  4. 8192 levels of pressure? I could not tell the difference.
  5. Guess what, my old intuos 4 pens still works on the new screen, while the “new“ pen still works on my old intuos 4! Which is great because I was worried about also buying a new intuos pro to work with it. Now I can save the money for a Cintiq Pro 16
  6. Very skeptical now about how they marketed the “new” pen…

There were so many things that hit me when setting up Cintiq Pro 13, but mostly because I use Linux. However, most of my miseries were the result of the lack of real built-in display controls. And they marketed the buttons as “real hardware switches“. Oh yeah, the buttons maybe hard-wired, but the functions are not! I WAS ANGRY ABOUT THIS BECAUSE IT WAS WHAT I NEEDED AND I FELT BEING TRICKED.

But it feels much better to draw on it! So I have no regret.

THAT DOUBLE HORN DEMON CABLE CONNECTION THOUGH. If I know who came up with this stupid idea instead a single cable connection…

“Just one more date Derek, please!” Laura begged, following him down the stairs and waving her phone at his back.

“I said no!  You don’t know what it’s like,” Derek muttered, suddenly defeated.

“I know babe,” Laura told him, coming up to wrap an arm around her little brother, standing up on her tippy toes until she could lay her head on his shoulder.  “But look at this guy.  He’s gorgeous.”

Derek couldn’t resist a quick glance at the dating app.  Damnit.  Laura was right, as always.  The guy was gorgeous.  A mole dotted face with an adorably upturned nose smirked at him from behind a pair of square framed glasses, and he could feel his resolve crumbling.

Why is fetishism so common in social justice circles?

I may be misunderstanding the point of this ask, so specify further if I did.

It actually goes two ways! One part seems to think fetishism is a way to bolster social justice and a compliment to marginalized groups, while the other part are actually the other way around; fetishists who are attempting to co-opt and use social justice as a justification for their fetishism.

Hi! As an avid fic reader, there is something that has always bothered me about a lot of fan-fiction I have read in the Stucky fandom or the marvel fandom in general. There is almost always a level of casual sexism against the female characters, for example, in many fics the female characters are referred to as "girls" despite being grown fucking women also is it necessary to talk about how beautiful Natasha or Peggy are in every single fic? Aren't we reducing them to their beauty?

This is actually an incredibly complicated issue. Yes, there definitely is a fair amount of casual sexism in stucky fanfic and in fanfic in general. But on the other hand, compared to general fiction and the world at large, there is significantly less sexism. I’d also point out that the majority of transformative fandom is female identifying, queer, or both, this makes fanfics relationship with sexism a lot more complicated. Internalized misogyny is incredibly hard to sort out and be aware of, because it’s your own internal monologue and in the case of many fanfic authors, your own internal monologue as a woman and (in most cases) a feminist.

The specific examples you pulled are tricky ones, cause on one hand, yeah theres certainly an element of sexism in there, but on the other hand there also isn’t necessarily a bad wicked thing. In most stucky fics, the narration is third person pov through either steve or bucky, and in the case of two men born in the 1910′s calling grown women girls would absolutely be a part of their vernacular. It’s absolutely sexist, but I’d argue that it’s a strongly internalized attitude and language pattern both of them would absolutely have problems recognizing and or getting rid of. So even if it’s not a carefully thought out choice from the author, it serves as interesting characterization. Also since the majority of fic authors are women, the relationship with using girls isn’t as simple, for one thing it is a part of common english to use women and girls interchangeably and it’s not something that’s closely examined by all women all the time. Also, I think theres as aspect of it’s usage that is reclaiming it in a way. I mean girls isn’t a slur by any means but it’s not free of negative meaning, and by referring to wonderful characters as girls it in some ways seeks to remove those negative connotations- by presenting to the reader a group of people who the reader admires and saying some of them are girls and thats great, it does something meaningful for a woman reading. Using the word girl/s isn’t always something bad, especially when women are using it.

As for calling them beautiful all the time, I’d argue that 9/10 times theres absolutely nothing inherently sexist about mentioning their beauty. I mean it is objectively true, mcu’s female characters are beautiful. Now the reason behind all of them being gorgeous is pretty sinister, hollywood has an insanely toxic and sexist beauty standard and the fact that female characters in movies have to be beautiful in the same way is a whole other barrel of fish and we’re talking about fanfic, we’re dealing with characters who have a appearance and personality not 100% set by the author of a fic. Honestly, I’ve read thousands of Stucky fics and I think I’ve read a handful where women were actively reduced to their beauty. I mean when was the last time you read a novel by a cishet man? It’s absolutely horrifying, the way they treat women is disgusting, and fic is so much better.

Most of the time in fic, beauty is just one aspect of their character, for example Peggy’s strength and steely determination usually follow any mention of her beauty and Natasha’s dry humour and keen intelligence usually follow any mention of hers. On the other hand yeah, you get a lot of Bucky dancing with a beautiful nameless woman who only appears as an object of desire and jealousy and yeah, thats a problem. But I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all to mention a woman’s beauty provided shes being not shown as important only because she’s beautiful.

I’d also argue that the vast majority of sexism in fanfic isn’t calling female characters girls or referring to their beauty, its demonizing or ignoring female characters who are “in the way” of a m/m ship. I see this happen a LOT with Sharon in particular, but also Peggy and Natasha. You don’t see the female character who is canonically with one half of a m/m ship is a controlling, violently jealous, homophobic monster plotline often anymore, but it does still come up. More common is the female character who is canonically with one half of a m/m ship is a endlessly pure, patient, supportive and unconditionally understanding prop who exists only to step graciously out of the way of the m/m pairing. I see that all the damn time and it bothers me.

Female characters tend to not be as developed in canon and because of that often also remain underdeveloped in fanfic and also tend in both canon and fic to be there only to support the male characters not existing outside that context. That or the fact that f/f ships are incredibly neglected. I mean theres like one f/f fic for every like seven m/m fics. Part of that is the fact that there are so many less women than men in fiction. Part of that is on us for just not writing wlw and favouring mlm or m/f ships. I have really complicated feelings about this as a queer woman, I mean I‘m running a ship blog about two men. I could be putting my time into natsharon, cartinelli or claire temple/misty knight, but I’m here instead. I worked through lots of internalized homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and aphobia while reading m/m fics, not f/f and I spend so much more time and energy on m/m ships. I mean here I am, a wlw and here I am investing almost all my leisure time on men. I mean I love it in this fandom and it’s absolutely my choice to be here but part of me wonders what it would be like if I had gone through that process with a f/f ship instead and what it would be like to invest this time on women. I wonder what it would be like to be in mcu fandom if our source material treated it’s female characters better and had more of them.

You also see barely any not white, disabled, unattractive or poor women in fic, but once again part of that is a distinct lack of diversity within the source material. But you know what, I do not see many fics with Helen Cho or Claire Temple in them at all, let alone as developed characters.

Anyways sexism in fandom is a lot more complicated than it initially appears. Nothing is ideologically pure, even fanfic, but due to the nature of fanfic being written by people who you can easily contact in the sometimes caustic forum of tumblr I think it’s incredibly important to be gentle with authors who violate what you individually see as correct. Much of tumblr’s atmosphere of callout culture has a very black and white view of what justice is and what is correct, when in reality theres a lot of layers to this, it’s not a simple black and white dichotomy. People are at different places in their journeys, theres a lot of reasons why authors write things the way they do that you might not be aware of, broad sweeping statements saying x is always bad are a real dicey area to step into (and yes, I see the irony in saying that)

So while fandom certainly needs to take a closer look at our own internalized misogyny (and racism and ableism and audism and so on), I think theres much more to be gained from larger conversations, self reflection and making an active effort to be kinder to women than there is from things like carefully abstaining from words like girls.

i’m not gonna get into the reasoning behind why that meme is fucking harmful as shit because the people linked above already did a wonderful job explaining it, i’m just here to ask @ the people who, rightfully so, are always the first to address & publicly shame problematic behavior: WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU BEING QUIET ABOUT THIS ?

ableism is real, guys. disabled people are real. they’re not plot devices, they’re not fictional characters for your fave shows to make u go all :c at ur favorite couple. THEY’RE NOT AN IC STARTER. ableism exists, and it’s just as bad as any other -ism. why are we so passionate about every injustice on this hellsite but so QUIET about this ?

  • is it because the Cool Blogs™ aren’t talking about it?
  • is it because some of the Cool Blogs ™ are actually the ones spreading that meme around & encouraging harmful stereotypes / behaviour / beliefs ?
  • is it because you think it’s uncool to talk about ableism ?

i don’t know the answer, & i’m also gonna give the benefit of the doubt to people who have reblogged it, because some ( some ), may have not read it, may have not realized what kind of ableist bullshit was into it, whatever — either way 1. please delete it 2. please stop reblogging memes from the source blog ( who’s an ableist dick spreading even MORE ableist shit around ) 3. here’s a bunch of links abt ableism and how shitty is is, in case you wanna know more ! 1, 2, 3, 4.

thank you !
