will ask her to make that face

under my skin - prologue

prologue || and the bet begins

“Make a bet with me?” He asks again, his lips pulled into a huge smile. Brooklyn mulls over his question or rather, request. Niall gets on his knee, then, and Brooklyn almost drops her coffee as she immediately takes a few steps away from him. Niall remains on his knee, chuckling. “Brooklyn Cooper, will you make a bet with me?”

The first time Slade Wilson saw Oliver showing feelings toward Felicity it was through a video of the Queen Mansion. He couldn’t listen, but he saw him trying to make her stay safe, away from the danger. He knew there he loved her, so he used that. He wanted to hurt the woman Oliver loved.

The last time Slade Wilson saw Oliver show feelings towards Felicity it was right on his face in the middle of Lian Yu. He listened to him ask her to leave so she could be safe. They kissed, and he knew they still loved eachother there, so he used that. This time, he wanted to protect the woman Oliver loves.

Idea for a game show: it’s a cooking competition with no recipes, just a lil old granny judge telling the contestants how to make dishes that have been passed down in her family from generation to generation. All the contestants have to follow along as she talks, and her instructions are super vague. There are no actual measurements, just things like “Add the basil. How much, you ask? Just enough.” or “Put it in the oven until it’s done.” Every week it’s a different judge with recipes from all over the world until the finalists must face the Ultimate Grandma™

Isn’t Isak a great friend? He reaches out to Sana because he knows something’s up. He sees Sana looking at Sara and the girls, so he tells her something that makes Sana know she’s been right about Sara all along – but without pushing. And then when he feels the conversation won’t go anywhere like that, he asks her a safe question about biology, tells a joke and leaves with a warm smile on his face. He’s the nicest guy.

Barn Mates - One Year On

Barn Mates was first aired exactly a year ago today… and what a monumental episode it was for both Lapis and Peridot!

For those of us who were already shipping Lapidot, it was a dream come true – and for some of those who weren’t, it opened their eyes to a whole new (and now completely canonically viable) ship.

I’ve written about this episode a few times in the past, but it feels fitting to look back on it again today; for day one of Lapidot Anniversary Week!

So, without further ado…

The episode opens with Peridot wistfully speaking into her tape recorder about sharing her new home with Lapis.  Only a couple of episodes prior to this point, Peridot had made the decision to stay at the barn by herself whilst the other Crystal Gems returned to the temple. The fact that she now so enthusiastically wants to share her home with Lapis (as opposed to going back with the other Gems or staying by herself in the barn) just shows that she already has some level of admiration for Lapis.

Peridot says:

“Why don’t we watch the sun come up and figure out what we’re going to do with all this time, eh Lazuli?”

Watching the sun rise with someone is an old romantic tradition/cliché, so the fact that Peridot specifically mentions wanting to do this with Lapis certainly speaks some volumes.   And it also transpires…

…that this line was foreshadowing a scene that came later in the show – in Room For Ruby, not only are they watching the sun rise together (just as Peridot wanted to do), they’ve actually been sat together all night stargazing prior to this point, which is another activity that has obvious romantic connotations.

After Peridot has finished speaking into the tape recorder in Barn Mates, Lapis expresses her desire to live in the barn all on her own. Steven suggests that the barn be split down the middle, with each of the two Gems having their own “side”, which leads to a very interesting shot of the pair of them:

Notice how they’re effectively framing a picture that’s behind them.   This picture is of the barn’s previous owners – Greg’s aunt and uncle, who Greg described back in Space Race as follows:

“My aunt and uncle had a great love for aviation, and each other.  They cherished the years they spent together, and they held on to every belonging they ever owned.”

It’s interesting, then, that a picture of a happy couple has been placed directly in-between Lapis and Peridot in this shot.  This becomes something of a trend as the show progresses, with the picture being placed in-shot with Peridot and Lapis on occasion in a fair few other episodes, such as these:

This could well be foreshadowing a romantic relationship between Lapis and Peridot.  The fact that Greg mentions “aviation” is also something interesting to think about, considering that Lapis can fly and Peridot was the pilot of the Hand Ship back in Jailbreak.

Lapis isn’t keen on the idea of splitting the barn, telling Steven that Peridot is the problem:

“I can’t stand the thought of looking at her everyday!”

This statement is now somewhat ironic because, in the episodes since Barn Mates, Lapis almost always has her eyes on Peridot – and gives her some extremely suggestive looks, too!

Peridot and Steven both try to assure Lapis that Peridot has changed, but she doesn’t want to hear it. Steven thinks it’s “sweet” that Peridot wants Lapis to see how much she’s changed since their last encounter, and he helps her to make an apology card which has a very interesting picture drawn on the front of it:

Steven may well have the intent of getting Peridot and Lapis to be friends, but he’s drawn them looking like an actual couple here; they’re even holding hands.

Eventually, after some persuasion from Steven, Lapis joins them – and a beaming Peridot hands over the card.  This still fails to win-over an unimpressed Lapis, much to Peridot’s disdain.

“It took me over an hour to compose [the message in the card], and I was the most sincere as per Steven’s instructions!”

The fact that Peridot put so much time into her apology message gives us an indication of how highly Peridot thinks of Lapis – and how much she wants to make her feel better. She then spends some time deliberating what she could give to Lapis as a gift (upon Steven’s suggestion), and they come up with an idea…

“H-2-Oh my GOSH!” … “It’s a gift for you!  You know, ‘cause water’s your thing.”

Peridot’s mannerisms and tone of voice here are very flirtatious.  However, given Lapis’ previous traumatic experience of being trapped on the bottom of the ocean, this is another idea that falls completely flat.

And what does Peridot do?

“A pool?!  What a cloddy idea!  Of course she wouldn’t like that!”

She actually blames herself for the mistake.  This is very uncharacteristic of Peridot, who normally has a very lofty opinion of herself and her intellectual capacity – which, again, shows how highly she must think of Lapis.  She even uses the word “cloddy” to describe her own idea; with “clod” being an insult that she usually only ever levels at other people when she’s at her most angry.

She then decides to make a very grand gesture…

…and offers her most prized possession – the tape recorder – to Lapis as a gift.

She’s very flirtatious in doing so here, as well.  With a wink and a smile, she tells Lapis:

“See, the ribbon is even blue.  I got yo’ number!”

Peridot has offended all of the other Gems at some point in the past, but she’s never been seen to perform as grand a gesture as this one in order to win them over.

Peridot is, in a lot of ways, incredibly materialistic - she has been shown on more than one occasion to hold her very few possessions really closely to her.  By Peridot’s standards, handing the tape recorder over is essentially the biggest thing she could do for someone, which is a very clear indication of her feelings towards Lapis.

This gesture is completely lost on Lapis, however, who proceeds to crush the tape recorder in her hand.

Usually in these situations, Peridot would be distraught that one of her possessions had been destroyed (see, for example, Peridot on her knees begging Amethyst not to throw away her beloved tablet in Too Short To Ride).  However, this time, she actually seems to be upset by the fact that she’s managed to upset Lapis once again, exclaiming:

“What, were you trapped in a tape recorder too?!”

Peridot is exasperated by this point, and gives a very heartfelt speech which, I believe, really gets to the root of one of the key reasons why a relationship between Lapis and Peridot just makes perfect sense:

“Look, I get it, you know?  You’re confused!  You can never go back to Homeworld.  This place doesn’t exactly feel like home yet.  You’re alone, no one could possibly know what that feels like!  Oh wait, I do!  We’re the same, except…  you don’t have to be alone.”

She and Lapis are going through the exact same thing at basically the same time; namely, being stranded on earth with no way of returning to Homeworld.  There’s literally no-one else who they could bond with over this, except for each other – it’s a common ground that they share with each other and only each other.  It’s logical and sensible storytelling, therefore, to have these two characters stick together and share the experience with each other.  It puts them on equal ground, gives them both an acute understanding of each other, and enables them to both support one another as they adjust to life on earth.

At this point in Barn Mates, however, Lapis still isn’t having any of it.  Peridot, clearly at her wits end, asks what Lapis wants from her.  Lapis angrily tells Peridot that she wants her to leave… and that’s exactly what Peridot does.  She wants Lapis to be happy so much that she’s even willing to give up her home so that Lapis can live there instead.

As she walks away, Steven reprimands Lapis for treating Peridot so badly.  As he’s talking, Lapis folds her arms and shifts on the spot, her gaze meeting the crushed tape recorder on the floor.  Everything about her body language in this scene exudes guilt.

Peridot comes screaming back towards them moments later, however – being pursued by a Roaming Eye that she’s convinced is after her.

The trio flee from the ship, but eventually come face-to-face with it, which causes Peridot to cower behind Steven in fear.

However…

…Lapis steps forward, and glances back at a wide-eyed Peridot.

This scene is very important because it’s the first time we ever get to see that Lapis does actually care about Peridot, despite the pair of them getting off to a very turbulent start.  She steps up to defend the helpless Peridot from the Roaming Eye, and makes sure to specifically ask Peridot if she’s ok after the threat has been neutralised – proving that she didn’t only have Steven’s interests at heart when she took out the Roaming Eye.

What happens next needs no introduction…

Peridot has still, to this day, never looked at anyone else with such love.  The way that her hands are clasped to her chest makes it the typical “cartoon character looking at their love interest” pose.  That smile on her face is literally the biggest one that she’s ever given.  And Lapis’ deep blush, that she actually turns her head away from Peridot in an attempt to hide, is also a reaction from her that’s unique to this scene – and very much implies that the apparent feeling of attraction is mutual.  There appears to be some symbolism behind the sun coming out as Peridot smiles, too.  This could well be an indication that Lapis is warming up to Peridot and seeing her in a new light.  It also has a somewhat poetic quality to it, with the storm clouds (both literal and metaphorical) dissipating at this very moment.

Steven picks up on what’s going on, giggling to himself as he looks at Lapis.  It’s also very interesting that Peridot’s loving look is still lingering even after the camera angle has changed – this is no fleeting “micro expression”, it’s a very prolonged and deliberate look…

…which was the first of very, very many that the pair of them have since gone on to give each other (the above images being a small handful of examples).

All in all, Barn Mates was the start of a very beautiful relationship between these two Gems, which has well and truly endured throughout the past twelve months – and has gotten ever stronger with each episode that they’ve appeared in together.

I hate how everyone assumes Jason Todd would be a bad father and not know how to take care of his kids so he’d need his family to teach him how to be a proper father, like b*tch please. Jason would be the best dad and you know it.

He’d be the kind of dad who lets his son do a messy science experiment he saw at school, and when they get green slime all over the kitchen table, Jason just laughs and cleans it up after instead of getting angry. He’d be the kind of dad who goes to every baseball game, every ballet recital, and every concert. He’d be the kind of dad who tells his kid he works with the Tooth Fairy every night instead of admitting the truth that he’s the Red Hood because he doesn’t want them to think he’s a bad guy. He’d be the kind of dad who makes smiley face pancakes in the morning if his kid asks for it and belts out Disney songs while he does so. He’d be the kind of dad who lets his daughter put a bunch of tiny ponytails in his hair, and then goes to the manor like that because she made him promise not to. And when his brothers laugh at him, he just laughs along because it was totally worth seeing the proud smile on his little girl’s face when she admired her handiwork.

Screw all of you people, Jason Todd would be the best father ever, which of course he learned all from Bruce and Alfred. That paired with the fact that he had a crappy childhood, so he does whatever he can to ensure his own children don’t have to suffer like he did.

Hey, hey! Shy anon here. Would you like to share your Klance headcanons, please?

heuheuhehuehueheu don’t mind if i do

  • Lance loves Keith’s hair
    • listen. you do not constantly comment on the feature of someone else unless you are coveting it or jealous of it or love it in some way
    • lance: god your hair is stupid
keith: then why are you running your hands through it right now
    • in all honesty, Lance loves to play w Keith’s hair???? he will braid it then run his fingers through it til it untangles then braid it again or just play with it and Keith will doze off with his head in Lance’s lap
  • they get in fights
    • a lot
    • and it’s normal and it’s okay because, in every way, opposites attract, and Lance is scared of Keith’s impulsiveness and is worried it’s gonna get Keith hurt, and Keith doesn’t understand why Lance keeps putting himself down every time someone tries to compliment him and it’s this cycle where they both eventually start to realize that maybe they have to concede their stubbornness and listen to make this work
    •  usually it ends with one of them kissing the other quiet mid-fight and gripping their cheeks and whispering “I love you, you know that?”
  • Lance sings them to sleep when they spend the night together in one of their rooms
    • it starts off as playful, joking, annoy-the-shit-outta-Keith sing-song, until Lance starts to sing one of his favorite songs from back home and he finds he can’t make it a joke anymore because there’s this hole in his heart and it hurts so much that he has to stop because he can’t breathe anymore
    • Keith just rests his hand over Lance’s heart and whispers soft reassurances until he calms down again
    • and a little later, when Keith asks Lance to sing again for him, Lance can do it without crying this time, and it becomes their nighttime ritual, Lance humming and singing soft lyrics as they stare up at the dark ceiling that they both know will never feel like home
  • Keith likes making out
    • very much
    • to the point where their lips are numb and they can’t feel their jaws and both of them are panting and kind of pawing at each other’s faces and pushing into one another but they’re really having trouble breathing now, but they still can’t stop
  • sometimes the two of them will just go hang out inside of Blue because Lance loves his girl and Keith loves watching Lance talk to her and get excited when buttons light up after Lance asks a question, because the way the two of them interact is so sweet, bordering on endearing, and what makes Lance happy makes Keith happy too
  • whenever Keith and Lance are stargazing out of one of the many floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the castle, Keith will always point out a blue star and say “Look. Just like your eyes.”
  • those bone-shaking, armor-clacking, rib-crushing hugs after near death battles? yeah. lots of those.
  • spooning that turns into annoyed kicks because Keith hates getting too hot and “fuck off, Lance, you’re sweaty” and “c’mooooon, you love it” and “oh my god, I will put you on the floor”
  • Keith is a cat person so when they go to a planet and the aliens who needed help are literal cat-people with toe beans and floofy ears, he’s in near tears the entire time and he’s like “hi sorry, I just-sorry, can I-sorry-can I touch ur toe beans” and the cat-person is like “whom” and Keith is like “PLZ CAN I HOLD UR HAND” and the cat-person is shook bc a Paladin of Voltron wants to Hold Their Hand so of course they say yes and Keith nearly passes out bc he is touchin the toe beans
    • also, turns out that as much as Keith loves cats, he’s fuckin allergic to them (and he already knew this so rly he’s just a masochist) and starts uncontrollably sneezing for the entirety of the mission, but despite it all, he is still smiling and sniffling and just so Happy that he met real live cat people who let him touch the toe beans
  • sometimes when Keith gets really upset over something that’s happened or a battle that almost went horribly wrong, Lance will just hook his pinky finger around Keith’s and it’s like this thing that grounds Keith and helps him focus and close his eyes and breathe, because he knows Lance is there and that they’re gonna be okay
    • Keith never really knows how to vocalize his thanks to Lance for these moments, so he just lets it speak through his actions, like when they’re all heading to bed for the night and Keith stops Lance just to press their foreheads together for a moment before kissing Lance gently on the lips

and another boxer!lexa~

Can we just discuss this? This was when she saw Rhea on her phone talking to Kara, and when she asked, Rhea blatantly lied to her face. Lena KNOWS she’s lying (and TBH, she always knew in the back of her mind that Rhea is shady), but she chooses to ignore it. She struggles, but she still turns away and continues to work. She wants SO BADLY to believe that someone (besides Kara) is truly good, and truly believes in her. She turns away, knowing better, because despite everything, Lena Luthor has a hopeful optimism that trumps her rationality simply because her heart is desperate for love.

This also ties into the headcanon that Lena knows Kara is Supergirl, but is in a bit of denial about it, simply because she wants to believe her life can be normal, for one second. For one second, she can have a friend who doesn’t have any ulterior motives, and doesn’t have a past that is tangled with her last name. Kara is her safe place, a place to go to hide from the reality of her life, and admitting she’s Supergirl adds layers of complications that I don’t think she’s ready to face. Lena Luthor is smarter than everyone, but she chooses to overlook certain things, almost as a reflex, to protect her heart.

PROMPT Winn and Kara go to Build a Bear

“This is ridiculous,” Alex huffs. She wears sunglasses and a hoodie, skulking behind her sister and Winn.

“No it’s not!” Kara says, “It’s cute and romantic and you’re coming along whether you like it or not.”

“We are three grown people -grown. people - shopping at Build-A-Bear in the middle of broad daylight on a Monday morning. It’s ridiculous and embarrassing.”

“Told you we shoulda blindfolded and kidnapped her,” Winn mumbles and Alex laughs at him, flicking him in the ear.

“You wish you could kidnap me,” Alex threatens, and Kara shushes them both.

“You will not ruin Build-A-Bear day for me, Alex Danvers. I’ve been planning this for weeks and you owe me one! Remember what happened last time we tried to come?”

“I exploded a bear with too much stuffing,” Alex grumbles, rolling her eyes. “Fine! But let’s make this quick! I have a reputation to uphold, and this could ruin me.”

They enter the store, Kara squealing, Winn with a look of wonder on his features, Alex still trying to hide her face from any possible security cameras.

“Welcome to Build-A-Bear, how can I help you?” the worker greets, matching Kara’s bright smile with an unabashed grin of her own.

“We’re making bears!” Kara says. “Mine’s for my boyfriend, hers is for her girlfriend, and Winn’s just here for fun.” She doesn’t notice the blush in Winn’s cheeks, but she doesn’t care. It’s bear time.

The lady walks them through picking out a bear and putting a heart inside.

“You have to make a wish on the heart, that’s the rule.” she says, and Alex stares daggers at her. Kara squeezes her eyes shut and mumbles something into the small fabric heart in her hand. Winn, too, whispers something into his hand, and Alex swears she can hear the name ‘Jack’. Alex refuses to whisper a wish into the heart, that’s unnecessary and childish.

(It doesn’t stop her from thinking her wish, though. I wish we’re together forever.)

Alex chooses an outfit for the bear in about thirty seconds, a small policeman’s outfit that is perfect for Maggie. She can’t stop the small smile that creeps onto her face as she dresses the bear.

Winn chooses fairly quickly as well. He can’t decide between the science bear outfit or the blue Power Ranger suit. In the end, Alex quietly suggests, while Kara is distracted, that Jack would like the blue Power Ranger wearing a lab coat, or maybe he’d like anything because Winn is the one giving it to him.

(Winn doesn’t talk to Alex for the rest of the day. He also takes her suggestion.)

Kara takes forever to decide. She goes between piecing together a Mini James, to a fireman, to a million other things. Then she spots it. And loses her mind.

“Do you get it, Alex? Do you get it though? He’s dating Supergirl and the Build-A-Bear is Wonder Woman! Get it, Alex? It’s hilarious!”

“Kara, if you don’t hurry up I’ll tase you again.”

“Pfft, please. That barely hurt the first time.”

“Kara!”

By the time she gets home, Alex is exhausted. Between the mental anguish of being forced to Build-A-Bear, and shepherding Kara around the grocery store afterwards, it’s been a long day.

“Hey, Babe,” Maggie calls from the living room. She hears Alex groan. “Long day?”

“Kids are gonna be a walk in the park after dealing with Kara,” Alex tells her with a small smile. Maggie just laughs.

“I got you a present,” Alex says as she sees Maggie sprawled out on the couch. She hands her the blue box.

“Oh my god!” Maggie almost squeals, “you’re too cute, Danvers.”

“Kara dragged me along, so I thought I might as well.” Maggie opens her present and pulls out the miniature cop-bear. She holds it close to her chest, snuggling into it.

“I love it, Alex,” Maggie says, leaning over and giving her a kiss. “She’s adorable.” Maggie inspects the fake birth certificate that accompanies the bear. “Her name is Gertrude??”

“That’s Officer Gertrude to you,” Alex replies. “The best news is, if she needs to go undercover she can just borrow one of your leather jackets. You guys are about the same size.”

“You ruined it. Now you’re sleeping on the couch tonight,” Maggie tells her, still holding Gertrude close to her chest.

“But this is my apartment!”

“I don’t care.”

hey if you're still doing prompts, the time(s) someone outside of the team (or inside) mistakes aaron for andrew or the other way around?? thanks!! i love your writing!!

There should be some sort of rule, Aaron thinks, that identical twins have to avoid celebrity.

It was disarming enough to be a teenager the first time he saw his own face with nothing inside of it, like an indifferent stone likeness. Then Andrew went and got himself famous, made himself important to everyone (including Aaron). He stares out from magazine spreads with his middle finger up when Aaron goes through the checkout counter, and he follows him closely with his reputation.

He’s had patients bow out of the exam room when they heard their intern was ‘A. Minyard’. He’s had anger and relief flip toggles in his chest when he caved and bought a magazine, finding Andrew and Neil piled in Exy gear to promote a product. They looked uncommitted and severe except when they were jostled together and shot from the side, candid, staring.

It almost makes him miss the moments with the foxes when everything was as simple as watching Andrew’s face for the changes and catching the wave to the next game.

But it’s better to have the kind of work that he knows he does best, stockpiled for the rest of medical school and the rest of his life after that. It feels good to stretch on rubber gloves and distance himself from the worst sort of rot in the world.

It feels good for his feet to throb and his head to twist itself into knots, and to come home to Katelyn, who always tries to wait up for him and never can. She passes out with her legs over the armrest of their secondhand couch and her hair fanned over the cushions. He kisses her awake more often than not.

He goes for runs, sometimes, like he never did in college. It’s when his own reflection makes his neck prickle and he thinks, god, he’s here. He’s never not here. If you’re a twin you’re a member of a club, and you’re constantly in uniform.

He gets stopped on the street and asked for his autograph, and he feels comforted to know that his “piss off” is gentler than whatever Andrew would have said.

He sees his own face hoisted at pride, watches Andrew become half of a relationship that handcuffs exy to entire social movements, and it coaxes old fear into his blood. It takes some wrangling and undoing of rusted closed spigots before he realizes that he’s impressed, too.

He hates Neil out of habit. He watches the sun make new colours with Katelyn’s hair at 5 am. He puts his alarm on snooze just so he can lie there with her. He likes that his life is a can on a string, and somewhere, tossed out into another state, in a high-rise with blackout curtains and an orange cat, Andrew has the other can.

Felicity opened her refrigerator in search of the leftover takeout she could’ve sworn was still in there somewhere. To her dismay, all she was greeted with was mostly empty shelves. She was not a big grocery shopping person to begin with, and with everything they had been dealing with over the past couple of weeks, she couldn’t remember the last time she pushed a cart through those fluorescent lit aisles.

“How did Oliver manage to be the Green Arrow and keep our refrigerator stocked,” she muttered to herself as she checked a container of yogurt to discover it had expired months ago.

Her eyes caught the box from Oliver’s party the night before and she slid it out, remembering that there had been a few leftover slices of cake. They were on summer break after all, so cake was an acceptable dinner… right?

She was debating eating it straight from the box versus preserving some of her dignity and getting a plate when she remembered that she didn’t have to spend her evening sitting at her counter eating cake alone.

Setting the box down and reaching for her phone, she hit her first number on speed dial and waited while it rang. Which wasn’t a long wait since he picked up before the first ring had finished.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes… Am I only allowed to call when I’m in danger?” she teased.

There was a pause. “Well, no I just—“

“Do you want to come over tonight?” She needed to get the words out before he gave her enough time to talk herself out of it. She could practically see his eyebrow rise in that way it did when she said something that could have multiple interpretations and she hastily added, “There’s just leftover birthday cake and I was about to eat it but I realized that you should probably get dibs on it since it was for your birthday.” And also, I just really want to see you. “I promise this isn’t a ruse. But if you’re busy I understand and—”

“No,” he interrupted her. “No I’m not busy. I’m just finishing up at City Hall and then I can be right over.”

The corners of her mouth flicked up in a small smile at the eagerness he was trying so hard and yet failing to hide in his voice.
