The Vindication of Venom Part 1: Introduction and Background Context

This essay series is my attempt to address some of the criticisms surrounding the most famous Spider-Man villain of all time, Venom.

To be specific I will be tackling the original earliest portrayal of the character from Amazing Spider-Man #300 and the criticisms levelled at him in that issue.

I am not endeavouring here to look at the Lethal Protector era of Venom, the Daniel Way run of Venom or even versions of Venom from later on in the David Michelinie run of Spider-Man and make a case for why they aren’t so bad.

Fair warning, not only will there be SPOILERS if you’ve not read many Venom tales but this series as a whole is very lengthy. I will also be reusing images throughout these posts as reminders or to illustrate different points so apologies there. The same goes for some of my general points.

With that all said let’s kick off by laying down some foundations for what is to come.

why are people saying ‘your choices don’t matter’ in S3? Yu may of had a bad taster in S2, we all did but to me. Season 3 ligved up to the name ‘Decision Making Game’, all my time in the game– I felt like every decision mattered, everything I SAID mattered and it does.

I don’t know what game you’re playing, but don’t shit on the game. It’s very well done, amazing writing and the characters are superb.Telltale to me, have made up for Season 2.

The concept of making a TV show sounds amazing. You have a team of writers. You could have a group of people from different backgrounds, races, genders, sexualities, and they could draw from their own experiences to make a super complex, realistic, interesting and diverse group of characters, with interesting story lines. Yet, somehow they manage to create the same awful straight white guy over and over again. 

So you want to interact with a fanfiction author

Great! I’m glad you want to reach out and start a conversation with the many creative, giving people who take time out of their busy lives to pen the stories that have captured your imagination. This post is going to cover leaving reviews, giving constructive criticism, and a few do’s and don’t’s.

If you like a fic, leave a review! You can do this a couple different ways.

Reblogging with tags. Every single creative person I know, be they writer or artist or musician, religiously stalks the tags when people reblog their work. Tags are an amazing way to communicate with a creative, especially if you’re shy about sending them a message directly or are afraid your comment will go unnoticed in their inbox.

Don’t know what to say in the tags? Think about the moment you decided you were going to reblog this piece instead of just hitting the “Like” button. Was it a particularly well done piece of dialogue? A description that made you feel like you were a part of the story instead of just reading it? A scenario you’d never considered before but changed the way you thought about [character a, situation b, or fandom c]? There’s a reason you’re taking time to reblog instead of like, so let them know why! Not every reblog needs to be a tag flail.

Alternatively, you can send the author a message. Fanmail if you’re shy and don’t want your adoration made public. Sometimes, if I don’t have time to tag a fic the way I want for whatever reason, I’ll like the piece and then shoot the author a fanmail or an ask telling them what I liked. This is also acceptable. Who doesn’t like getting mail? Crazy people who don’t use social media, that’s who.

Ok, but wait. What if you DON’T like what the author has done with their fic? What then? Yes, there are options.

Option #1: You ignore the fic. You neither like nor reblog the story. You and the author both move on with your lives. You may choose this option at any time. It is not necessary to let the author or anyone else know you have chosen this option.

Option #2: Ask the author why they chose to go that route. Politely. We’ll go over what that means later.

Option #3: Give constructive criticism. Now. Be careful with this one. Creatives are sensitive people. Make sure the author is open to it before you go barrelling into their ask box. If you message me, even on anon, saying, “Hey, I just read your latest fic and I have some concrit I wanted to run by you. Is that ok?” that is perfectly fine. If my answer is yes, go for it. If not, see Option #1.

What is concrit? Glad you asked.

This is concrit: “I totally get the vibe you were going for with that scene, but I was a little confused about the angles of the body parts. I don’t think you meant for them to be doing xyz there. It just took me out of the moment a little.”

This is NOT concrit: “You’re actually not very good at writing smut. You should probably just let [other person] write it and stick to what you’re good at. Which is not smut.”

What’s the difference? In the first one, you acknowledge what you think the author was going for. You explain what has you confused. You explain how you interpreted it. And then you leave a way for the author to contact you to respond to the concrit. You could be right. Maybe the author’s beta was having an off day and missed that awkward elbow maneuver. Maybe they don’t have a beta.  Or maybe it’s you that’s missed something. The second example is rude. This criticism is not designed to help the author. It is designed to tear them down and discourage them.

Some people adore concrit. Some people only want it before they publish a piece. Some don’t want it at all. None of these are wrong.

SIDE NOTE FOR AUTHORS: If you ask for concrit, do not be upset, offended, or throw a tantrum when someone sends you a respectful message. You did not want concrit. You wanted to ask for concrit and revel when no one sent you anything. Those are not the same things. Concrit, when given correctly, is designed to make you, the author, a better writer.

Ok, let’s go back to Option #2 now. Where you liked the piece overall, but the characters are acting a little wonky. Something’s not quite right, you think. You don’t really have any concrit, but you want to say something. Here’s what you can do, especially if the author is posting a work in progress.

Acceptable: “Hey! I just read the latest chapter of [amazing story you’ve been following since day one]. I’m enjoying the story so far, but this last one has me a little confused. Why did [character a] do [this]? I feel they would have done [that]. Am I missing something?”

Not acceptable: “Your latest chapter was a big disappointment. I feel like you just don’t know the characters anymore. There’s no way in hell [characters a and b] would be [doing xyz]. I’m sorry, I’m unfollowing you.”

In the first example, you let the author know you like their work. You are making an attempt to understand their vision. You give them a specific example of what’s bothering you. You acknowledge that there may be things coming that you aren’t aware of yet. In the second, you’re an asshat who is wasting bandwidth. The tone has shifted from commenting on the story to commenting on the author.

And here are a few general DO’s and DON’T’S:

DO tell an author you are excited to read the next chapter.

DON’T send an author a message saying only “update soon” less than five minutes after the new chapter was posted.

DO speculate on what’s going to happen next.

DON’T tell the author how to write their story.

DO ask your author how the writing process is going.

DON’T ask your author why they haven’t updated yet.

DO send your author love.

DON’T send your author anon hate.

THERE ARE NO PROFESSIONAL FANFICTION AUTHORS. (We’re not gonna talk about she-who-must-not-be-named of the fifty shade variety). Every single fic author has a job, family, friends, school, religion, other hobbies, or sleep equally vying for their attention. Respect their time, respect their work, respect them as human beings, and we’ll all get along fine.

Why is SKAM so popular,

you may ask.

If you’re new or feel the same, read this:

1. This show is super clever. You have to pay attention to every little detail, cause everything is for a reason.


2. It is from Norway. You haven’t heard much about what Norway is like, have you? 

Neither have I. But now I think I’m falling in love with it when I start knowing more and more about this beautiful country.


3. It is happening live. YES, by LIVE I mean you get messages characters exchange and little parts of the episode which airs on fridays. You get these clues live like it was happening right now. And through the whole week almost everyday you get new clues.


4. Beautiful styling. Norwegian teenagers dress like they are taught that in school but you’ll never see expensive clothing or a new dress every freaking scene. They wear the same clothes combining them and looking incredible.

5. This TV show is KIND. Although characters make mistakes as if they were REAL people, they learn, grow and change. Real bad shit happens to them but they find their way out. They TEACH US.

6. The last but not least: ACTING SKILLS. These little young people act like they have been actors for a century. I’m honestly amazed by each one of them. They act 100 times better than hollywood stars of their age. 

And I hope that after this show’s success they get discovered.

That is why it cannot and must not be copied in ANY remakes.

Okay, you see this? These are jacket cover/inside cover of a book called “The Beast Within” written by Serena Valentino, who wrote other Disney books that are so amazing. I purchased her first Disney book in the Germany Pavilion in Epcot a few years ago and have bought every other book of hers since. But lemme tell you why this one is my favorite:

Not only is “Beauty and the Beast” one of my favorite films of all time, but the Beast is one of my favorite characters in any film. And this book makes him seem so much more understandable. It’s written in his perspective and there’s literally a scene where he’s so close to being an actual monster that he goes out to kill Belle after she runs away from him.

Did you hear me?

HE GOES TO KILL BELLE.

Of course, he fights the wolves that attack her because in his mind, he’s like “wait I can redeem my human status still” while the beast side is literally chanting “RIP THE FLESH OPEN AND SPILL HER BLOOD EVERYWHERE ALL OVER THE SNOW COVERED GROUND”.

Let me tell you, this book is so good. And it gives more backstory to Gaston (who is, as you guessed, one of my favorite Disney villains).

If you enjoyed the 2017 version of “Beauty and the Beast”, you’ll enjoy this book. It’s different than the film, but just as good, in my opinion.

Alright guys so I’ve seen something happening over and over again on posts about Wonder Woman and Gal Gadot and I am caving and making an entire post about it.

This has to do with claims that she is a Zionist and that she’s an awful human being because she served in the IDF (the Israeli Army) and yada yada.

FIRST OF ALL: Serving in the Israeli military is required of all citizens. She served for 2 years as a combat TRAINER. She was badass enough to be a combat trainer in one of the most deadly armed forces in the world (these are the people who created Krav Maga, okay?) and she did not engage in active combat. She killed no one. Her service was mandatory and after she got out, she went to law school because she is very passionate about justice and social issues. The most noteworthy thing about her views on her time in the military is that she says quite frequently that she wishes no country had the need for a military. She is very much a proponent of peace.

As for the Zionism claims… there you get into the debate of what Zionism actually means. Does it automatically mean you are anti-Palestinian, or does it simply mean you believe in the Jewish state of Israel? I’ll let you decide but…

Here is what I do know about Gal: She is an Israeli. She was born and raised there. She believes her people have a right to their homeland because they, like her, were born and raised there. I have seen NOTHING of her saying anything hateful about Palestinians. You can argue about history all you like but the important thing is actually THE PEOPLE. The moment we side with a government over people is the moment we lose. Most people alive today in that area were born and raised there and so it IS THEIR HOME, regardless of them being Israeli or Palestinian. It is home to them both. (Again, not arguing the HISTORY of the people. But the actual people who are alive there today.) The goal should not be to take sides with either government, but to hope that the people themselves can coexist peacefully and happily. That is what Gal believes in. She wants the conflict to stop and for peace to be achieved. Just because she is a proud Israeli and a proud Jew does not mean she is automatically anti-Palestinian or anything else. Personally I think it is amazing and beautiful that an Israeli Jewish woman is portraying Wonder Woman, one of the most iconic superheroes of all time. 

Other things about Gal? She is most proud of being a mother to a 4-year-old little girl named Alma. Her daughter loves princesses but Gal says Alma has told her that princesses seem weak and that they always need a prince to save them. Gal said that broke her heart because she wants her daughter to grow up knowing that women are amazing and can do anything, and so can she. So being Wonder Woman has come at the perfect time for her because her daughter is watching her every move and she says Wonder Woman embodies everything that is wonderful about women. Not only is she strong and brave and fierce… she is compassionate and kind and intelligent. Gal says she hopes women AND MEN will see Diana/Wonder Woman and understand and appreciate all the complexities of being a woman and how powerful we are just by being ourselves. She’s also a real goofball and loves to joke around and dance on set. AND she gained… wait for it… 17 lbs of muscle for the role! That is INSANE! Not to mention that I’ve never heard anyone more coherently understand the true nature of Diana the way Gal does. She understands that the best thing about Wonder Woman is how truly GOOD she is… how much she cares and believes in mankind, and yet that compassion does not undermine her strength and power. Instead it enhances it. She really GETS the character and that’s why I’m so excited to see her portrayal.

So yeah… can we please stop blindly hating on her because someone somewhere made some claim and we think it makes us smart and politically superior to believe it and support it? It doesn’t. It just makes you look like a weak-minded jerk. Do your own research. This goes for other things as well. Don’t jump on hate trains just because you want to seem cool or smart.

GAL GADOT IS AMAZING AND IS GOING TO BE AN AWESOME WONDER WOMAN! I leave you with this gif of her being adorable on set of BvS.

Why Ochako is Actually a Complex Character

I was going to save this post until after finals were over for me BUT THEN I REMEMBERED IT IS MY DARLING PRINCESS’S BIRTHDAY TODAY AND WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE HER BIRTHDAY THAN TO MAKE A POST THAT CELEBRATES HER.

 So leggo.

 Now I won’t go into overall details about her because I already did that in this post that you can read right here, which I essentially discussed how she’s actually an amazing WSJ heroine and whoever voted her the worst should put their heads in sand because they don’t deserve to see the rest of the world (I kid I kid, promise!).

 Rather, I wanted to challenge the viewpoints people have of her and really argue on the fact that Ochako Uraraka is actually more of a complex character than we give her credit for. Most often than not, the fandom looks towards Katsuki or Izuku or even Todoroki and they build them up and go on and on about their complexity in the series. Hell, those three are my friend’s favorite characters and they are fan favorites for a multitude of reasons that they deserve. I myself have made numerous posts about Katsuki since we are given such complex views of him as well as the others in the series. They are the main focus in the story and their growth has been some of the best we’ve ever seen in a series.

 However, characters iike Ochako, who actually does have a lot of complexity and dimensionality, get lost in their wake and I really want to talk about that.

 Most often than not, when we see Ochako, we see this bubbly smiling girl who has such a wonderful and positive attitude that sometimes comes off ditzy. One glance at her and the words that come to mind are cute, adorable, fluffy, etc because that is the type of character that she mostly is. She is the female support of Izuku and the way she contributes to the story is with her adorable attitude that lightens up the mood in certain situations like the Ground Zero fight and even the room competition (did you see how cute she was with Iida’s glasses!?).

 Yet, what bothers me and possibly other really hardcore fans of her is that she isn’t just this bubbly character that smiles on the side but she does have complex issues that really makes her character more interesting in comparison to other characters.

 I mean for starters, this girl is the QUEEN of keeping her emotions from people and really suppressing them in most situations and not letting them get in the way of what she wants to get done.

 For example, the first real example of this is when she lost to her fight with Katsuki.

Now let’s remember situational factors going into this: we just found out her true goals into going to heroics (which was said in a much more serious tone than we had ever seen from her before)

we found out she was incredibly nervous to be facing Katsuki (and again WAS SUPPRESSING HER EMOTIONS)

we saw her rejecting Izuku’s help (as well as her little speech about feeling ashamed)


we saw her PUTTING HER ALL INTO THAT FIGHT TO SHOW HER TRUE STRENGTH

 So seeing her crying when she’s speaking to her family isn’t just some small defeated thing but it really gives us so much insight in her character and who she is as a person. We finally see how truly hard she is on herself and the perfectionist personality that she usually keeps hidden from others. You can even see by her facial expression when Izuku left that she put on a face for him to not let him get more worried then he already was. 

 And then don’t even get me started with her attitude during the Hero License Exam because oh my gosh, that was so powerful from her.

 From that, we first see her being so strategic af:

Then we get this amazing speech from Izuku about her and how he could have told the difference between her and Kemi (notice the plan part!)

Of course her being a BA here cuz eh why not, she’s really grown from her training

THEN LET’S SKIP TO HER PUSHING HER FEELINGS DOWN FOR IZUKU


I just

There are so many moments of Ochako that I missed that would have proved my point even further than this but these moments here showcase how complex and really interesting Ochako is as a character.

 The bubbly personality that we see from her is only a piece of the whole picture and you could even argue that she’s so good at suppressing her emotions that it’s the personality she chooses to portray to others to keep her other emotions away from people because she doesn’t want to burden others. I personally don’t know if that’s true at all and maybe it is, maybe it isn’t but the fact is that she isn’t just some character that sits on the side and looks cute and adorable. There are so elements about her that makes her different and the fight she had with Katsuki really changed her as well as her inspiration from Izuku. She took both of those interactions with those characters and used them to better herself and it’s just SO POWERFUL. Not many shounen female heroines do that so it’s so refreshing to have Ochako be the way she is.

 Overall, as obvious as it must be, Ochako is one of my favorite characters and I’m so excited to see the growth she’s going to have more in the series. Her feelings for Izuku got cut off during the exam so that’s an arc we need to get from her and I know I want to see Ochako kicking Katsuki’s ass and actually winning to show how much she’s grown from the beginning. I have so much hope that Horikoshi has so many plans for her character and I’m so excited to see what he has in store for her and how he will continue to build upon her.

 Regardless, Happy Birthday Ochako!

 TLDR: Ochako is a very complex character and I wish more people celebrated that.

I wish they used 3D models for Sonic Mania. They're kinda restricting the graphics potential with 2D sprites.

Not really, because creating fluid and vibrant sprites takes just as much time and effort as it does for 3D models.

I feel a lot of people don’t give enough credit to the spritework business in general, usually by viewing sprites as less impressive than 3D models due to how supposedly primitive they are by comparison. Even though, as shown by Mania itself, as well as the original Genesis trilogy and Sonic CD, spritework when done right can achieve the desired results just as well, to amazing results of it’s own kind.

Hell, just look at Mania’s now-famous title screen for example:

Regardless of how much time it actually took to complete, you can tell there was a lot of effort spent in order to make it look as smooth and expressive as it is. And this is just the title screen. The rest of what we’ve seen so far looks just as eye-catching and appealing. The character animations, the enemy animations, the zones and their intricate colour schemes and patterns…

Why should such obvious effort be disregarded purely because it’s not in full 3D?

You know what else I love about Bughead? Even though they’re an Official Couple, they each have their own separate storylines independent of each other/their relationship. Too often writers are so focused on a ship that they start writing the characters involved as one half of a pairing rather than their own independent people. Take away the relationship they have with each other and you start wondering, ‘what’s the point of this character again? why are they even around anymore if all they’re contributing to the plot is making out with their significant other?’.

That is not the case with Jughead and Betty, who both have their own separate character arcs throughout the season. Take away the romance and those issues they have to deal with would still be there. What’s even more amazing is that Jughead and Betty’s romance not only avoids overshadowing them as individual characters, it provides a constant source of emotional support for them as they deal with their personal demons. Throughout the season, when they’re not dealing with Betty’s family secrets and mental health issues together, they’re dealing with Jughead’s family issues and insecurities together.

Their romance isn’t everything about them, because they can still exist even if you remove the romantic subplot, but it’s not redundant either, because their relationship provides both of them with the moral support that these two kids desperately need in their darkest moments. It doesn’t detract from their individual character arcs, on the contrary, it provides them both with a beacon of light to overcome the struggles that characterize their individual character arcs.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you write a romantic subplot properly.

but, i’m getting ahead of myself. ahem. let’s take a look at a little gif that’s been floating around the internet recently, one of my favorites, actually.

That whole “favorite” thing was sarcasm. Don’t know if I communicated that directly.

I fucking despise this gif. It’s so god damn simple. The fucking head shape has to morph like 3x to transition to each character. It’s literally the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen try and validate the similarities in today’s cartoons, because it’s a BASIC FUCKING HEADSHAPE. THAT MOST CHARACTERS HAVE. Yet somehow, it’s kind of a centerpiece to this anti-CalArts sentiment that’s spreading. So uh, let’s break it down, shall we?

you ever considered that CalArts grads (or art student grads in general) don’t just come out the school tassel to the left, directly to the studio, and sit down at a table and draw for nine months until the show is born, with the show looking exactly the same way as the first sketch? ever considered that studios, simplify design for appeal or due to constraints? That maybe some studios have a style that no matter the initial design the creator has to adhere to? That maybe some execs MAKE the creators draw in a way that’s similar to other shows, in order to bring in an audience?

also have you considered the plethora of cartoons that exist not spearheaded by calarts alums? cause there’s a lot.

TL;DR stop demonizing CalArts (and its alums). It did nothing to you. It was sitting across the schoolyard minding it’s own business and you threw a dodgeball at it’s head. Now apologize or you can go stand on the wall for 5 more minutes.

I think the most important thing I wanted to work on this comic is how it is told from Tamashi’s eyes. That’s how I decided to build the characters through the story, for example, what Tamashi sees most is Allen’s face, honest, straightforward, kind, sweet, smiling, always open and welcoming: 

Whereas he doesn’t see Kanda’s face, Kanda is always turned to him. And when he does, it’s from an low angle:

I had fun thinking it would be important that we, as Tamashi, know of Kanda what he does: Kanda is the father he doesn’t know anything of. Intimidating, scary, tall, unreachable, always with his back turned on him. (With his back turned to him, but I guess you wouldn’t offer your back to an enemy). I aim to, gradually, expose Kanda’s features as Tamashi grows confident, making him look more human and less of a jerk than what he does now (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧

Also have you noticed how everyone bends forward to talk to Tamashi? Or squats down to be at his level? So Tamashi can stare directly at them. It’s a very simple gesture but it’s one that says I’m reducing my world to your perspective because you are as important, which Kanda never does.

The first time I read DGM i had to go through the Alma arc three times to made sure I fully understood Kanda (I keep thinking there are hints of his personality I keep missing, as I do with Allen… DGM is such an amazing artwork) so when I thought of him for this story I wanted to be very careful building the conceptualism around a character that has never forgiven himself and doesn’t want redemption. Can you imagine, you spend your life trying to fulfill a promise of love and then you find out -because you slipped once, only once, you are as human as the rest even if it might not seem so-, that you have a kid you never intended on having, even less with someone you’ll never love maybe not even remember, who kinda looks like Alma when they were kids, who is called Tamashi, who, surprise, is there to bite him in his ass. Tamashi is the perspective of a future Kanda never allowed himself to have and now he’s forced to deal with it (ノ≧∀≦)ノ Good thing Allen is here to be the bridge between present Kanda and past Kanda, Allen you angel  (//▽//)ゞ So, basically, what we see of Kanda is an unforgiving Kanda, intimidating, pretending to not mind when he so clearly does (in the last update with Tamashi sleeping outside of Kanda’s room he spends there looking at the boy how long? Five minutes? Ten? He didn’t awoke Tamashi either, just lets him be. He’s trying to make his way out of this without a fuss but OH YOU WON’T BE SO LUCKY KANDA The denial Is Strong). 

Oh! Also I was very careful with colors and including some… … … … little details (୨୧ ❛ᴗ❛)✧ 

Both panels with the flowers are very important…! they are different types of flowers in different palettes… Allen’s one are somewhat fresh and rainy, so springy, whereas Kanda’s seem to be floating on an abandoned place… Pretty, but isolated (•̀௰•́ ) This is funny because oH WELL SPOILER I GUESS / CRASHES THROUGH THE WINDOW AND FLIES INTO THE SUN

I wish I could make an extensive tutorial about this but tbh I’m not an expert on the subject. I’ll try to give you some written tips though!

I think the main reason why lots of people have problems with variety is the fear (sometimes subconscious) of making your character look ‘ugly’.

First of all, something I’d recommend doing this, but instead of trying to achieve the ‘perfect face’, try doing a bunch of different ones and keep them! Also, here’s some actual tutorials to help you out (x) (x)

One very good exercise is drawing your friends, trying to capture their main features. Maybe their face is very long? They have big lips? Small eyes? This is amazing for lots of reasons because:

-you’ll practice a lot
-you don’t need to bother with lineart
-by staring at their photos for so long, you’ll see how different real humans look and you can use such features for your characters
-you can show it to them if you’re satisfied!!

I’d also recommend to look at how your favourite artists draw faces and specific features, you can definetely take some of them and merge them in your style!

a PSA for artists

i’ve been thinking about this a lot. it’s something i wish i learned much sooner. it’s something i wish more people knew.

the idea that art has to be any one way is wrong.

your art does not have to be realistic, or look like anyone else’s, or keep up with popular trends.

the idea that you have to be able to draw realism to be a good artist? wrong.

you don’t. you already are a good artist.

everyone has their own style. it’s fine and normal to adopt style choices from other artists, but everyone has their own style, there is no changing that.

and why would you change it?

your style is what makes your art YOURS. it is unique. it is perfect in it’s own way, because it is perfect in it’s style.

draw something. now look at it. you just created something new. a visible projection of your thoughts. something nobody has seen yet, not in the way you present it. isn’t that amazing?

you are so powerful. you can create your own characters, worlds, stories- you can give and take lives and control all that happens in your own universe, through your own beautiful style. that’s incredible!

there is no such thing as bad art. those “bad art”/”bad oc” blogs mean nothing. they are bitter, worthless beings with the intention to hurt you. please don’t fall into their trap.

“okay, so i don’t have to draw realistically, now what?”

you practice!

get to know your style. familiarize yourself with the shapes and lines. just keep drawing the way you do, maybe making small improvements every now and then. but remember, improvements are just what you think looks better.

nobody can tell you how to make art. nobody can tell you your art is bad, because it isn’t. it’s simply different, and that’s the way it should be.

keep going, okay? it’s amazing to watch people follow their passions, and it crushes me to see them beat down for superficial things.

My Top Anime Recommendations

1. Haikyuu!! This is about volleyball. One of my first anime obsessions. It has so much comedy tho, and a lot of salty ass bitches and APPRECIATION FOR SHORT PEOPLE. I really recommend if ur new to anime. So far, I’m pretty sure it’s over but season 4 might be coming in 2017. It’s a sports anime about volley, as I mentioned and any mention of volleyball will trigger characters. 

 2. Yuri!!! On Ice A very gay ice skating show. Most of you have probably already watched it. It makes me cry way too much. And there’s a lot of kids you might want to adopt. Basically, if you ever wanted anything from your otp, watch this show and you’ll get double of that. Disadvantage is that it raises expectations for all animes smh.

 3. Tokyo Ghoul THIS IS THE SADDEST AND MOST BAD ASS ANIME EVER. Honestly, it made me so so so so upset. I cried a lot. But it’s like super cool. It has gruesome parts and a lot of things that might trigger suicidal people, those who hurt themselves or those who’ve been abused. If blood makes you uncomfortable, don’t watch. Other than that, it’s actually got a great plot and story and characters are amazingly developed. There’s a guy who’s slightly deranged tho, and a drag queen but those details can be skipped over. 

 4. Charlotte The reason I like this is because there’s a badass girl in this like what the fUck. They have supernatural powers and it’s cool BC the main character actually misused them like all the time it’s hilarious but later on he becomes so amazing and he’s so ffing domeSTIC AND CUTE. Also he’s very salty  AND OMG TE FINALE WAS AMAZING LIKE THE GUY, HE IS SO FUCKING COOL IT HAD ME CRYING SO HARD DEFFO ONE OF THE BESTEST ANIME

5. Bungou Stray Dogs Literally you will fall in love with the main character so fast lmao. Suicide mentions like, constantly. At first, it’s supposed to be humor but in the second season; the arc of one of the characters is so good and will explain why he mentions suicide so much. AGAIN WITH THE HUMOR. And unlike other supernatural animes I’ve watched, this one doesn’t make people with powers the bad guys. They’re very appreciated. 

6. Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi / Escape The plot is amazing. Made me cry a lot. The characters are great. Basically, it’s about how this guy goes back in time to prevent things from happening and oh mY GOSH ITS GREAT. 

7. Ajin 

Another super cool supernatural one. definitely worth it. Graphics are great and so are the characters. Its ongoing and the second season is about to end. you’ll seriously feel love/hate

 8. Free! Any mention of water will make main character strip. Quite gay. I haven’t watched all of it but I’m about to finish it in a few episodes. Again, this is good for anime beginners. Also, trigger warning for those who’re afraid of drowning.

9. K. That’s literally what it’s called. I think it stands for Kings but yeah. It’s also really good and it’s about head clans that are looking for a colorless king who can transfer into different people ad make them do awful things so they get targeted by the different clans (blue, red, etc)

10. Mob Psycho 100 ~ THIS IS A MUST WATCH. I keep adding new animes I know but this is important. It’s humor is on point, unexpected twists are everywhere. The characters are lovable and it’s really good for beginner supernatural anime. It’ll make you cry and laugh.

BONUS : DEATH NOTE. Okay, the plot is incredible. Things that you won’t be able to think of and they’ll leave you mind blown. Characters are human af like it’s supernatural but everything is so natural, like the nature of people. Warning: like, everyone dies. Don’t get too attached to characters. But yeah, it’s an old anime and has 37 episodes in total I think, but it’s super good!!

The thing you have to understand with Ashley is that her albums are complete experiences. Badlands was a concept album that went beyond the music. The Badlands were a place and characters that you followed through the songs existed within it. That’s why she said “listen to it in order”. That album isn’t supposed to be heard on shuffle. There’s a linear story. If you just take Ashley’s music at face value you lose a lot of the message. One individual song from Badlands was amazing but one song alone didn’t make Badlands genius, the sum of its parts did. You comprehend the complexity of everything that went into it once you hear Ashley talk about how there was literal science and math and physics behind the creation of the textures, depth, and effects in the songs. It’s the amount of thought that went into it that elevates it. I can’t find the full interview now, but I think this is one of my favorites of her talking about all the shit that went into making Badlands. The entire interview from 2015 is amazing, but if you want to hear her just talking about Badlands and the complex scientific approach to the album go to 8:50.

Now that we’re on the cusp of the release of hopeless fountain kingdom one has to understand the same basic things. The video released today educates the meaning of the song. The video is another layer to the song. The video is just one of many that will enhance the concept of the album. This song will fall somewhere in the linear story that once you listen to the entire thing will make even more sense. Ashley’s art is a complete experience that goes beyond the music and unless that is acknowledged then it will never be properly appreciated. 

I get that some people may want to experience music through a standalone song or not think about things much. I guess that’s fine. Mindless entertainment has it’s time and place. The beauty of Ashley as an artist is that if you just want to bop to it and never go beyond that you can. “Now Or Never” or “Ghost” or “Colors” could do that for you, but if you want more then there is also this entire alternative universe to explore. You can get the best of both worlds. Point is, it’s unwise to judge Ashley’s work based on one piece. She doesn’t make music to be dissected that way. 

9 Reasons Why the New “Beauty and the Beast” is Better Than the 1991 Original

I know, such a crazy notion, but as a die-hard fan of the original 1991 animated classic, as a young woman who adored Belle and looked up to her as a young girl, and as someone who loves Disney, I truly believe that while the cartoon classic is phenomenal, the new live-action reimagining is astoundingly better. Here are my reasons why:

1. Back-story 

In the original I always had SO MANY QUESTIONS. Mainly–how in the hell did a village less than a few miles away not know that a giant castle that once was home to a wealthy and powerful Prince was RIGHT THERE? Who was the Prince ruling over if the villagers had no clue this place and this beast existed? Why were the servants cursed if they weren’t the ones who turned the old woman away? Why was the Prince so cold-hearted, arrogant, and shallow? The prologue amongst other scenes in the 2017 film address all these questions.

We learn that the enchantress placed a spell on the villagers to make them forget about the Prince and everyone in the castle. This explains how no one knew it was there, and also the sense of lawlessness in the village, because if their ruler–the Prince–vanished, and no one remembered him then whose in charge? Gaston? No wonder it’s a mess there.

We also learn why Beast is so cold-hearted, we learn his mother died when he was young and his father was emotionally abusive, and raised him to be a spoiled, arrogant, shallow shell of a man. We also learn that the servants witnessed the emotional abuse of this child and did nothing to stop it–deeming them worthy of punishment for being so cowardly and selfish as to not help the Prince when he was young.

Now someone asked me why the hell Chip and the dog were cursed too, they didn’t do anything. My theory is the curse was really only taking effect inside the ballroom, all the servants were in there for the ball, and in the opening sequence we see Chip running in to see what’s the matter and Mrs. Potts running after him–terrified. I believe she sensed the danger in the ballroom, and was trying to save Chip from meeting the same fate as the rest of them, and ultimately–she failed. The Maestro and Madame de Garderobe’s dog was in the ballroom as well, so I guess he was just unlucky also.

We also learn that Cogsworth and Mrs. Potts had spouses who must’ve been away from the castle when the spell was cast, causing them tragically (at least in Mrs. Potts case) to be forgotten by their loves.


2. Belle the Feminist Activist

It was never made clear in the cartoon film that it wasn’t just ‘odd’ that Belle liked reading it was ‘odd’ that a low-born woman in 18th century France even COULD read. It wouldn’t occur to children (it certainly didn’t to me) that her reading in public is practically illegal and worthy of public shame. In the cartoon it was just all ‘lol books are lame,’ In the live action not only does Belle not have a town bookshop to go to (because seriously, why would a town of mostly illiterate people who hate reading have a bookshop) she is merely friends with the Priest who owns less than a dozen books. THAT IS ALL SHE HAS. And then she teaches another young girl how to read and is publicly shamed for it, and still doesn’t back down, because she believes that women deserve the same rights as men. 

In the beginning sequence of the town, we literally see boys marching into school while the girls are stuck doing the wash. Belle also refuses to waste valuable reading time on the laundry–so girl INVENTS A WASHING MACHINE! 

When Belle gets to the castle, she tricks the Beast into taking her instead. She tries savvy ways to escape. She never flings herself onto the bed and cries like in the cartoon. She fights every damn second.

In the end she doesn’t even change out of her ballgown to go save her father, she just hops on her horse and goes. 

Belle was ALWAYS strong, but this 2017 Belle is formidable and a force to be reckoned with.


3. Tragic love

In the 1991 film, the wardrobe was a goofy character there for laughs, as was Plumette. Also, Lumiere and Plumette’s relationship in the cartoon was creepy and borderline sexual harassment. It was pure lust. In this version, they are madly in love and Lumiere clearly cares about her so much. 

We also see Madama de Garderobe and Maestro Cadenza (a brilliant new character) who are also madly in love, but unlike Lumiere and Plumette can’t even be with one another during the curse due to the stationary limitations as the objects they’ve been cursed to be. By the time Madame finally makes her way downstairs to be with Maestro it is too late, the curse is taking away their life. The moment when Lumiere realizes he has lost Plumette, and where Maestro realizes he has lost Madame, add a heart-breaking very raw and real layer to the story. It’s not just about Belle and Beast, these servants aren’t just funny objects that talk, they were people too. They had a life and loves and that was stolen from them just as it was the Beast.

4. Papa and Belle’s Motherless Backstory

In the cartoon, Belle’s father is simply a goofy character. He’s a blithering idiot who makes pointless inventions. In this version, he is an artist who had to leave his plagued wife behind in Paris in order to save their only daughter. We see him live with the pain of this everyday. We see him and Belle have a beautiful, genuine relationship. We see him fight whole-heartedly for Belle. We see him give her courage and strength to never back down from who she is.

And we learn something that the cartoon NEVER gave us–we learn of Belle’s mother. Lost to the plague when Belle was a babe, with nothing but a rose-shaped rattle to remember her by, that her Father captured in a painting. Explaining why Belle always asks for one. We learn that Belle–like her father and mother–is willing to sacrifice everything for the ones that she loves.


5. Classic Fairytale Homage 

While the cartoon held almost no remnants of the original fairytale written over 500 years ago, or the original French film made in the 40s, the 2017 version pays homage to both. 

Belle asking for simply a rose from her father’s travels, as well as Beast and his servants preparing Maurice a fire and dinner when he arrives at the castle, but Beast only growing angry when Maurice steals the rose–is taken directly from the pages of the fairytale. 

We also see another fun easter egg reference to the french film: when Maurice walks up to the door–he sees the front lantern is being held by what looks like a human arm made of stone, which in the French film, was an incredibly iconic scene when Belle walks through the dungeon to find her father.


6. A Real Antagonist

Cartoon Gaston is again, a 2D character there to provide some conflict at the end. The 2017 version shows him as the epitome of prejudice, hatred and sexism. He expresses many times throughout the film the the sees Belle as prey for him to hunt. He leaves Maurice for dead in the wood. The lyrics of the mob song were even changed to include his verse “but I know they all will follow, for in times like this they do just as I say.” Gaston is the scariest Disney villain because people like him exist in real-life. Gaston and his angry mob of blind-followers provide a tangible conflict outside of the curse that the cartoon simply did not provide.


7. A Shared Love of Reading

It never made a damn bit of sense in the 1991 cartoon and the Broadway musical adaptation–that Beast was illiterate. If ANYONE during the time could read it sure as hell would’ve been the wealthy Prince. All aristocracy could read and most men knew how to read a little. So yeah, a Prince could read.

So the fact that he and Belle share a love of reading adds and element to their friendship bred romance that didn’t exist prior to this reimagining.


8. New Music

What would Beauty and the Beast be without those iconic numbers like: ‘Belle,’ ‘Gaston,’ ‘Be Our Guest,’ and of course, the title song–made famous by Angela Lansbury– ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ When Broadway adapted the cartoon film years ago, they added some songs of their own, such as the Broadway-Buff-Beloved number– ‘Home.’ So naturally it would’ve been easy for the writers and directors of this film to just buy the rights to those songs and call it a day. Instead we got 5 gorgeous new numbers, and 1 new reprise. We got the opening ‘Aria,’ sung at the Prince’s beginning ball by Madame de Garderobe, we get ‘How Does a Moment Last Forever,’ sung by Maurice, singing about remembering his late wife. Then we later get the Montmartre of this song sung by Belle as she recalls the lost ‘Paris of her childhood,’ in an all new scene where her and Beast use a magic book to travel to the attic where she lost her mother. We get ‘Days in the Sun,’ where we hear from the servants and the pain they feel as well living under the curse. We get, ‘Evermore,’ the torrid, angst-filled lamenting ballad Beast sings when he let’s Belle go. And lastly, we get a never before heard reprise of ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ sung by Mrs. Potts ( Emma Thompson) at Belle and Beast’s wedding. These news songs add more passion to the film. (Evermore is my personal favorite)

9. Gay Lefou

It’s about damn time. Cartoon Lefou is definitely alluded to being in-love with Gaston, but Josh Gads blatantly homosexual portrayal was brilliant, and as a member of the queer community–made me so happy.

Yes, in ‘Frozen’ we got the one throw-away joke about Oaken being gay, but it was 0.5 seconds long and barely delved into. In this 2017 film, Lefou makes many sexual innuendos towards Gaston, publicly cuddles Gaston, and in the end dances happily with another queer fellow at Belle and Beast’s wedding, and this is an amazing step forward for the Disney franchise to start having openly queer characters in their films.


SO THERE YOU HAVE IT! My 9 reasons why the 2017 Beauty and the Beast is better than the 1991 original. I still love the original and it will always have a fond place in my heart–but when movie nights of the future come round, I will opt to put on the 2017 version instead, and experience a Tale as Old as Time, retold for a new generation.
