Thomas I hope you're okay with all the current drama, I personally believe that you did nothing wrong at all. You're always making sure you're inclusive and doing the right thing, sorry your fandom's exploded :(
Hey!! Yeah, I’m doing fine!! Please don’t worry, these sorts of things happen sometimes and it gets very hard to address and handle all at once! I have made mistakes though, so please don’t feel like you have to defend all that I do, that’s not your responsibility, and I’ve been doing what I can to make sure things were addressed!
There was a piece of art of myself that was posted a while back that I put under a Read More and tagged nsfw because it was, and it was revealed later, after the artists’ bio was updated, that they were not of appropriate age, and that was a complete mistake on my part to make sure! I’ve always made a point to clarify, if people asked me, that if they were to do any nsfw art of me and submit it, that they should be of appropriate age to be doing so. My tumblr started as a personal blog and I thought tagging things appropriately would be enough, but this occurrence absolutely made me rethink how my blog was laid out and how much more consideration I needed to be putting into my blog and who was viewing it, so I made a public apology for it yesterday (in the #TSask) and decided to restructure my blog in order to make sure this never happens again. Posts I deemed too questionable, I have removed and if they ever go up again, they would be going up on a sideblog of some kind. I absolutely appreciate those who brought this up to me. I should have been the one to catch it, and I need to be far more vigilant about what I post from here on out!
There was also the post I responded to about why I felt it right to include asexuals and aromantics of any combination in the community. I’ve been having many really awesome and respectful conversations with people on both sides of this argument and its been really good, for me and I think for a lot of them, to gain understanding on where we’re both coming from. I am so grateful to those who came to me and got to discuss with me incredibly important things to remember and respect: the early struggles of the trans and gay community, the Stonewall Riots, the travesties and systemic oppression that still happen around the world today that need to be fought. We also got to discuss issues like arranged marriages that affect people on all areas of the spectrum. We talked about different demographics of the community and where they would like to stand or not stand. And the importance of limited resources made available to people of the community were discussed with me as well. I’ve been so absolutely grateful to those of you who came to me and are still coming to me to talk through these things, because I don’t claim to know everything, and many of the discussions were ended wonderfully respectfully. In the end, obviously, I have no, or maybe just really little, say in what defines the community. In what I say, I am absolutely making no attempt to prioritize people over another, because there are some extreme things that need to be fought. I can only be in control of myself and who I deem to be valid and who I would like to offer my support. I truly am trying to put myself in everyone’s shoes and see where they’re coming from. And I am so grateful so many of you came to me so respectfully to talk! That’s amazing! That, I think, is the most optimal form of discussion for people on both sides. I don’t like seeing anyone on either side attacking each other, and it’s so devastating to see so much of it.
I truly hope this helps bring clarity for those of you who were confused or looking for an update! The internet can be a confusing place and the truth can be mangled, but I am doing everything I can to make sure I amend for any bad decisions and hear you all out as best as I can. I’m only human, and I truly do care about you and where you’re all coming from, so I hope you can all bear with me!
I had the opportunity to see Wonder Woman recently, and I was left awestruck. Wonder Woman is such a timeless character, and I feel this story and the way the film was made really captured the heart of the original character. With DC’s track record, it had a high chance of being lazy and bad. But it wasn’t. It was original. Refreshing. I cried a lot, and here’s why.
1. Women Are Strong
I’m not one to loudly complain about the misrepresentation of women in media (though we often are). We’ve had some really awesome and strong female characters over the past couple years. But somehow, Wonder Woman took this in a completely new direction. Watching the Amazons fight the invaders on the beach nearly brought me to tears. It was so special for me to see women take on roles we rarely see them in. They were the fighters, the protectors, the providers. There are many women out in the world right now who are fighting their own battles, much like the Amazons. They’re providing for their families or serving their countries through the military. It was a pleasant reminder that while men and women have differences, they are equally strong and skilled.
(Also yay for a female director!)
2. Actions Speak Louder
Many times, Wonder Woman is questioned. She’s scoffed at for being a women (which would have been very common during that time). She’s underestimated. But what’s so amazing here is that she never has to prove herself to the men. It would’ve been so easy for the movie to fall into that common trope. She never argues with a man and she focuses her attention on others instead of herself. She wants to kill Ares and stop the war. And in the end, her actions speak louder then her words ever could. What I took from this is to rise to action. Stop talking and start doing. Ignore what others say, because you know what you can do. Hold your head high and rise above.
3. Mutual Respect Brings the Most Success
As I said before, it would have been easy for the film to fall into certain tropes. A trope we often see nowadays is a woman proving that she (or all women) are better then men. That’s never a point of conflict in this film. Her love interest, Steve, fights as her equal. He isn’t clumsy or weak to make Wonder Woman look stronger. He believes in her and helps her to the best of his ability. When they become interested in each other romantically, they both hold their own. They love each other but are not dependent on one another. We see the rest of the men in their gang react the same way later on. They all eventually come to love and respect Diana. It’s a great reminder that feminism is about collaboration and equality, not one gender being better then the other. We each have something to bring to the table and our differences are what makes us stronger.
4. It’s Okay to not be Okay
There’s a really interesting character in Wonder Woman’s gang named Charlie. He’s supposed to be the world’s top shooter, but time and time again he fails. He seen some things that have damaged him pretty heavily. What’s really interesting about this character is that we never see this issue resolved. He doesn’t have his big “hero moment” where he is suddenly able to shoot and save the day. This is so much like real life. We’ve all been hurt, and it’s ok to be damaged. You have nothing to prove, but your great efforts will help everything to turn out right in the end. At one point, Charlie even says to Diana “You don’t need me, you’re better of without me.” To this she replies “No, Charlie, if you’re not here, who will sing?” This implies that Charlie is still a valued member of the group, despite his shortcomings. His friends are able to recognize his other strengths when he cannot.
5. There is Much Darkness in the World, But Love Will Save the Day
Not much to say here, as Diana said it all in her own monologue:
“I used to want to save the world, to end war and bring peace to mankind. But then I glimpsed the darkness that lives within their light. I learnt that inside every one of them there will always be both. The choice each must make for themselves - something no hero will ever defeat. And now I know… that only love can truly save the world. So now I stay, I fight, and I give - for the world I know can be. This is my mission now, for ever.”
Often times love is portrayed as a great weakness. But it isn’t. To love is to truly see beauty in the world. To love is to be brave and strong. Love is the greatest power of all.
We must learn to forgive. Diana had the opportunity to kill the chemist responsible for Steve’s death. And she chose not too, instead focusing on the larger problem at hand and in turn leaving the past in the past.
There were not gratuitous or sexualized shots of the women in the film. The framing was based around the action. The women were all beautiful, but the film relied on it’s story and the strength of it’s lead rather then her beauty.
There will always be hardship. There isn’t always one bad guy to fight. We all will have to continue to fight our demons and endure through our trials. But it’s the light and the love, those precious moments, that we fight for.
Thanks Wonder Woman. You inspired me, and I’m so grateful. I don’t think I’ve seen a superhero movie with more heart. There will be many days ahead where I think “What would Wonder Woman do?”
*I may edit and add on to more of this at a later time, but I wanted to get my initial thoughts out!
emotionally comfortable in the thick of firey adventure, extremely uncomfortable with stagnation in life, things always need to be exciting, they are on the go go go towards new life, will shake things up even if that means they have to ruffle some feathers, they can't sit still with the concept of boring.. Feeling bored is something they have no patience for. The sense of Self is a strong component to their emotional balance.. "What do I need right now? Will this feel right for me? Is this what I want to do?" Aries is all about personal will. They need to feel like they are expressing that will in ways that ignite their passion. Being forced into exerting energy towards something they don't care about is a deep root of distress. Emotionally quick tempered, their emotions are always evolving and morphing into something new..their emotions hit them like fireballs that encompass their entire being.. In the heat of their emotions that moment is the biggest and most intense moment ever ever ever !!! ...for a few minutes.. Then they're onto something new. When your Aries Moon is flying around on fire in the heat of their emotions, sit with them and LISTEN to the experience they are having. A deep therapy for the Moon here is to be able to express their emotions to you within their personal "I" experience. They matter a lot to themselves. Hold space for this.
slowww and calmmm, Apple pie and lemon balm... I've seen this placement be wonderful and disastrous.. These people are comfortable in their home, in sensual pleasures, earthly delights. In a lower context they are way too attached to the material world, they will acquire so much random stuff that they don't know what to do with themselves but they feel like they need all the stuff.. If they ever got to a moment where they needed something completely random and they didn't HAVE that random thing.. Well that would be distressing for them. While their dependence on the material world can hold them back at times, it is absolutely admirable just how deeply in touch with it they are. They take the home very seriously, they are ones who will just stay home and be grounded instead of going out and running around in life.. Like a happy bear in its cave.. Within that cave there they are listening to awesome beautiful music, making great food, working with herbs, stacking wood, loving their good company.. Why would they ever want to leave that ?? Because there's a whole world out there moon in Taurus.. A whole world:)their emotions hit them on a bodily earthly level where they process and move through the emotional realm with the help of the natural world.. A moon in Taurus needs to be connected with nature more than any other moon.. They are the grounded ass f**kers.. They are emotionally comfortable BEING grounded.. So on the flip side when they can't find grounding or comfort in their material home they are in a state of perpetual chaos..
emotionally comfortable anywhere and everywhere!! As long as they're having fun and being stimulated by interesting things it's all good! Moon in gemini's really can and will talk to any sort of person. They are comfortable in any situation they are in. Moon in gemini's often have to learn how to find a home within themselves, they could be all dirty playing music on the side of the street with a nice hobo, or they could be in a rich million dollar apartment around a ton of people they don't know.. Where ever they are, they are super curious and interested in everything happening.. Happy to be there..Needing that stimulation from all things interesting.. They are very socially adaptable folk.. They know how to dissect conversation and meet people where they are at.. Which often entails them wearing a mask and not being their truest self.. Being who someone wants you to be in a situation.. It can be distressing at times once they realize how much energy they put into connecting with ones on a shallow level, it takes a lot out of them, they have to bring it back and realize.. Yes this is all fun and good but they ones who will feed my soul are the ones who KNOW my soul.. As for emotions.. It's mutable so the experience of emotions is very impacted from the rest of the chart but this conscious moon energy really rationalized and intelecualitzes emotions.. Sometimes they box their emotions up for a rainy day.. They need to learn how to let themselves feel emotions, they have emotions but they are literally capable of making themselves not feel them.. A way a moon in Gemini would relax and calm down would be through researching, chatting, and thinking about thing.. Here the moon lives within the mind. (My placement)
to put it simply, uncontrollable emotional state. This is a beautiful thing.. Moon in cancers have an emotional inner world that renders a fine work of art.. So many colors. What they experience in the waters of human emotion is special and unique because the moons archetype is fully at home here.. The moon is felt deeply in this person.. There's so much beauty.. But the conflict here is that the cancer moon doesn't have control of their emotional state, so it can be really difficult to do things because their FEELINGS are first priority.. They are likely to feel more comfortable within the comfort of soft lights, warm tea, nice fireplace, and loving company. However this is fully dependent on the rest of their chart. Water signs are fluid. Maybe they are more emotionally comfortable partying and having adventure because of a Mars in Aries and a sun in Saggitarius.. no matter what influences their emotional world goes so deep. They care. They want to nurture. They FEEEEEEEL. The moon is integral for these people, its important for them to connect with the moon through ritual or meditation.. This will help balance their emotions.. Even if they don't understand it on a conscious level, creating a personal relationship with the moon will subconsciously help them with emotional balance. A moon in Cancer wants to make you feel safe. They want to take care of you and your emotions. They will give so much... Sometimes too much.
these ones feel comfortable in the spotlight, whether that is within an intimate relationship, their family, their social sphere, or literally on a stage.. their comfort state lies within broadcasting their life for all to see. They have a need to share everything.. they want to share themselves, share their experience, their relationships, even the clothing on their back. This moon energy is so warm and generous. In return, these ones need a lot of admiration, attention, and affection in their relationships, they need to feel validated through being so expressive or insecurity will arise. Moreso than other Leo placements, the Moon here truly needs that attention from others, their emotional state depends on it. They draw life energy through being among different influxes of energy and shining their bright creative light within it. As for emotions, they are dramatic, hopeless romantic sonnets of internal poetry for the ones they love, dramatic boisterous crying when a sharp chord is struck, or totally uncontrollable angry fire rage when provoked. A series of extremes. They must channel their emotions into creative expression, they must have people who can give them the attentiveness they need in their bouts of emotion. Pushing them away will hurt them. They want to be close to you, themselves, their life.. they don't want to feel separate and distant. You'll find your moon in Leo being the life of the party, the friend in the group who brings all of the creative fun, their light is strong.. Its their emotional state. This placement has its challenges but I find it so beautiful.
A strong need for everything to be in order, for life to be in order in all of its finer details. Whether the moon in Virgo reaches that or not reveals their level of emotional balance. They are going through life on the outside looking in. Anylizing, discerning, critiquing, this will either be deeply channeled inward, outward, or both. If you meet a Virgo Moon who does have their life in order, looks put together, has a clean organized place to live, is actively working and integrating into the structure of the world.. They are probably emotionally balanced.. And their emotions express themselves as a steady stream of relaxation due to a success of implementing order in chaos. So on the flip side.. If you meet a Virgo Moon who, to put it simply, does not have their shit together.. They are likely extremely ungrounded with their emotions scattered everywhere and nowhere living in the mercury depth of their overactive mind. They process their emotions by THINKING, they need to understand everything about what it is they are feeling and why before they can ever reach a state of peace in that feeling. Overthinking, irrational worrying, vicious self criticism are shadow elements to this placement. This is a very challenging place for the Moon. The moon is the fluid intuitive waters of emotion and Virgo is the Mercury virginal energy of mental structure and organization fine tuning life to be perfect. They don't exactly mesh well together in their natural archetypes. However, if an individual has a well aspected Virgo moon or learns how to make good use of this placement.. its an extremely competent energy. Their life will be ordered and structured to the 9's.. No worry will ever need to surface about anything because they have their shit together in the most perfect way. And in that state they experience ultimate relaxation.
to feel emotionally comfortable these people need a balance. They need to feel like there is a balance in their workplace, relationships, home life, and within themselves. They need to feel like there is an equal contribution on the part of everyone involved in every aspect of life, that everyone is contributing equally to establishing a balance. If it's imbalanced there is distress.. A distress that either causes emotional turmoil or a distress that motivates them to mediate the energy of the imbalanced situation. They have a very calm and .. Well.. Balanced approach to their emotions. It hits them in an intellectual way where they really observe everything they are feeling and transmute it into a steady stream of balance. They could repress emotions because of this. If emotions are going upppp and doowwwwnn they are gonna try and pull it to the center and push it forward. A continuous evolution of feeling. This steady stream causes them to have challenge with experiencing intensity of emotion.. To experience the full spectrum of emotion.. They don't want their emotions to hold them back or bring them out of alignment in any way. Hence, the repression.. And repressing anything leads it to bubble up and explode... That's where the intensity comes in.. When the bottled up and down emotions are forced up to the surface they HAVE to face it and deal with it or else they feel unable to move forward. Another component to this placement is that they Deffinetly feel emotionally comfortable and fulfilled with Venusian things.. They are gonna really value art, atheistic beauty, the beauty of ones soul, physical features, and emotions.. Because it fills THEIR emotion to experience such pleasure. The pleasureful side of life integrates with them on a deep level. They are likely to be pretty romantic in relationships, they completely romanticize and paint their love emotions like a beautiful painting of exquisite design.. Whether the reality of the love experience lives up to that is either their emotional challenge or their emotional exaltation.
INTENSE EMOTIONAL WORLD. Uncontrollable deep waters of emotion like moon in cancer.. Accept in a life or death kind of way. Emotions go to the core of ones soul. "I LOVE you." "I HATE you" "You have BETRAYED me" "I NEED you" Nothing is shallow or superficial in their emotional world..they are literally incapable of that. These people will love you to death, litterally. There is a likely hood for possessiveness with this placement. A likelyhood for nothing to be taken lightly. I remember I was babysitting a moon in Scorpio girl one time and she dropped a bunch of cards or something and they were scattering everywhere inbetween the couch cushions. I watched this girl get so distressed, heavy breathing, intense look on her face, super not at ease as she was trying to collect everything that just fell apart. My Virgo self completely cleaned up and organized the cards for her. She was passionately thankful that turmoil was taken care of for her. These people are very perceptive.. They have a really acute sense of awareness in their surroundings.. The psychic eyes.. They pick up on the subtleties around them.. They are empathetic to the energies in their life. There is a strong possibility for metaphysical psychic ability with this placement of they are exalting their energy. A moon in Scorpio on the light side will have a deep power and capacity to have such an amazing passionate colorful emotional world. A less evolved moon here will be experiencing such intense emotions they can't help but burn bridges with people. Their emotional needs and requirements are strong. With this placement they are also likely to keep their emotions very secretive from the world. They don't think anyone needs to know what they are feeling. This can cause deception and being super guarded in themselves. On the flip side, there is a powerful opportunity for transformational beauty when they do open up their inner world to someone. I'd say overall moon in Scorpio is awesome but it's extremely challenging. Like the moon in any water signs- emotions come FIRST.
ahh the endless explorers of life. These individuals need a sense of expansion in their life to feel emotionally fulfilled. They need hope, inspiration, purpose, a promise of adventure.. Of growth.. Of a new horizon. They are comfortable in the action of expansion, whether that is going to a new place, learning something, or integrating into new relationships. It's hard to emotionally pin them down. They are on the move in their fluid state. In a relationship they need some who can hold space and swim with their currents because of they are in a flux state of perpetual evolution in regards to their emotional world. Like moon in Gemini or Aries.. They are so forward directed with going towards some new energy with their emotions.. They can be flakey. With these folk there can be room for emotional shallowness. Not always, but Saggitarus is the one who wants to have fun! They are the lighthearted archers prancing through all of the parties and people and foreign lands. It is a potential challenge for them to get caught up in some dense, heavy, stagnant emotional turmoil. They don't want to experience turmoil, they want to be having a good time! However, this is a fire sign.. The heat of their emotions DOES hit them. It's not like moon in libra where intense emotions come in and immediately get brought to a neutral line of balance. No, the intensity of emotion IS there. It's a matter of them taking the time to let them go deep into uncomfortable emotions. They would rather not be concerned with uncomfortable emotional depth at all if they didn't have to. But they have to deal with it or they will totally explode into a fire ball of saggitarius aggression. Give your little moon in Saggi some space in the heat of emotional turmoil and know that with a gentle touch and soft heart they will come to a place of opening up their emotional world with you.
Emotions here are very guarded. This is a hard placement for the waters of the moon. One may even fear their emotions with this placement, they may be mechanical and cold in this sense. Their emotions will not be tolerated if it's holding them back in anyway. Their emotional comfort lies in knowing they are competently moving forward into success with their life. The feeling of having their shit together is key for emotional balance. A moon in Cap won't want to be held back due to their emotional world. This is powerfully beneficial because they can really get shit done without having to deal with any of that cancer moon emotional stuff. However unless there is water in other places in their chart.. It leaves them in a place of emotional lack. They just aren't capable of feeling to the extent that others do because they don't let themselves. And that can be a conflict in itself because maybe it would give them a deeper feeling of competence if they COULD feel how others do. They really need to feel safe and secure and sturdy before they open up their inner world to someone. You have to win their trust to get to break that shell. This placement has a lot of good potential but also an immense possibility for challenge. With any moon, especially this one, that is all correspondent to the other aspects in a chart.
Emotionally comfortable in the realms of individualism.. they like their own kind of music, their own style, their own unique "fit" into the world.. They are emotionally satisfied in their inner world of "ME". Not "me" in the bright beaming self-centered way of Leo, no, its in the sense of "I am standing here feeling so different than all of you people" Whether they find solace or distress in that.. its a deep archetype that they feel. These people are living on the outside looking in- they are extremely extremely observant. They often they feel separate and detached out in the world, observing, putting all of the pieces together like mechanical machinery. They are very interested in life, in you, in your thoughts, in why things the way they are. They are taking it all in. With their emotions they need a lot of space to process it. They can really distance themselves from their emotions and the people who are making them feel emotions. Emotions are a lot for them to intellectually grasp, they want to grasp and come to an understanding of every facet of it, and they need time on their own to do this. Theres also room with this placement for close mindedness towards other ways of doing things. There is a likely hood for these people to feel they are doing and handling things they absolute best way possible, better than anyone else, they know how to handle their emotions, their life, their inner world. Its possible for arrogance and ignorance to be found here. Maybe they do really know how to handle their inner world better than how you think they can..... But also maybe... They really could use a word of advice. Theres a rigidness to this moon placement. These people find self-justified satisfaction in doing things exactly the way they think they should do it, it eases their emotional realm. There is room for complacency in arrogance here as their is room for extremely positive inner innovation and evolution of self.
Your inner world is the ocean. Where does it begin? Where does it end? You don't know, actually, no one knows. Your emotions are the definition of fluid. Interchangeable and uncontrollable. You are melting into your emotions. When you fall in love, you FALL in LOVE. When you feel sorrow, you FEEL sorrrrrrowww. Emotions are so real for you. You feel your emotions in your blood. Your emotional world is operating in the dreamstate. You are comfortable in ethereal experiences, the surreal beauty of nature, the most amazing poem recited at a word slam, looking deep into the eyes of your lover. Life just holds a more surreal note for you. When you feel emotionally comfortable, every single particle of who you are integrates into a peace and calm of giving everything to the moment of emotional comfort. When you feel emotionally uncomfortable, red sirens are going off in your being, everything is viciously not okay. You might have issues with boundaries, you let people in so deep into your emotional realm and you share so much. Yet, when you draw a boundary, you aggressively instate it into being. You want what you want, you may disregard what is good for you, or you may draw every boundary in the book to make sure whats happening is good for you. No matter what situation you're in- good or bad, you're in it for the feeling, for the essence, the energy. Moon in Pisces will bring you into a different world.
Ohmygosh SO many of the tags on that post of mine are things along the lines of ‘I used to have a Sonic OC’ ‘maybe I can use them’ or ‘I haven’t thought about my OCs in years’ and things to that effect.
SEE? THIS. THIS IS WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT! Look around you! Look at how many people are suddenly thinking about the OCs they made when they first got into Sonic and it’s not necessarily with shame and revulsion… it’s suddenly with NEW APPRECIATION. All these people who had OCs, once upon a time, but who probably put them aside out of shame because of the stigma surrounding it.
Now SEGA has said ‘Hey! No, that’s okay! Your OCs are valid and awesome! Make them! They can do what you always dreamed of and help Sonic save the world! They’re canon! They’re in the story! They’re important!’
And suddenly all these fans are rising from the depths, shedding the shame and embarrassment and thinking ‘Maybe that OC is okay after all..?’and ‘I should revamp them and try again…’
THIS is how it’s going to change things! THIS is why it’s important! THIS is what I’m so thankful to SEGA for!
So, again and again, thank you, SEGA. For giving us the one thing the Sonic fandom has needed for years.
Acknowledgement that this is 100% acceptable and okay. ♥
A few years ago, I worked giving out samples at Costco for a year, and these were the best/weirdest things that happened to me:
Around Halloween, a man and woman walked by my cart, with a little boy who was crying as if he was losing part of his soul. They all had strong and beautiful Indian accents. The man said, “Son, what’s wrong? Son, what’s bothering you?” and his wife sighed and said, “He thinks we won’t let him be a ladybug for Halloween.” The father straightened up and said, “Son, of course you can be a ladybug! You can be whatever you want!” and they slowly got the boy to stop crying. It was one of the most heartwarming moments I’ve ever seen.
An elderly man with a long and greasy beard stole my opened bottle of Tabasco sauce that I was using, and proceeded to tilt it over his mouth and drink as much as he could. He then made a noise like “Whee-hee!” and said, “You can’t say you’re from Georgia, unless you can do that!” while I stared on with a horrified face.
(I’m not even in Georgia, and now, I hope to never be.)
A cart rushed by me, two children clinging to the sides of it, and a third pushing it as the other two yelled, “Faster, faster!” A minute later, a very frazzled mother ran in and said, “Have you seen my children?!” I pointed, and she ran off again.
A toddler chose me specifically to tell a story to, about how one time he went to a swimming pool, and there was a slide he really liked, and he went down it a bunch of times. His mom gave me a look of “I’m so sorry,” as the kid spoke, but she should not have been sorry. It was awesome.
A middle-aged man in a suit tried convincing me (while I was shutting down my cart and trying to avoid him) that Obama was the Antichrist, and that the whole world was run by someone called “The Black Pope” who was baptizing space aliens, and that’s why he liked Mitt Romney better. I countered by telling him that Mitt Romney’s real first name is “Willard,” and that made him dumbfounded enough that I could escape and clock out.
I drew a square magnet art for our translation team STT where I used to translate Dan and Phil’s videos to russian, and I realised I never posted in anywhere, though I like it!
Translation is a hard work done by many volounteers in different countries and I just want to give a big hug to the foreign people in phandom who translate fics or videos or tweets in their own language, because damn, this is valid thing in phandom too! [Hugs]
Going off of this point by @colt-kun which I’ve copied and
pasted here. This gives a great overview of a purely statistical analysis of
why m/m ships are more common.
“There’s also the sheer
numbers to take into account.
Take the first Avengers movie
as an example (because frankly its one of the few recent blockbusters with two
female speaking roles). Two females, Black Widow and Maria. Then eight males,
Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Hulk, Loki, Fury, Coulson.
polyships/selfships for ease of math, and using the characters cisgender
identities bc that is what they are largely seen as (no disrespect meant to any
Possible f/m ships: 16
Possible f/f ships: 1 (2.2%)
Possible m/m ships: 28 (62.2%)
That’s not even accounting
for screentime, character chemistry, interaction times, etc. thats just the
When there’s a large
disparity in character gender then yeah, you’re going to see a heavy
inclination to m/m ships because that’s really ALL THATS POSSIBLE. The fans
have a natural desire for more story and romances, they want to world build and
AU. We’ve done that since stories were first told.
So of COURSE you’re going to
see a lot of women - of all sexual orientations - leaning towards m/m pairings
because when there’s only potatoes at the buffet… you eat the potatoes. Think
of all the shows an movies with only one female character in a cast of men. Is
it really difficult to see WHY there’s a lot of m/m ships there?”
Mainstream media is male-centered and male-dominated.
Going beyond just the numbers the fact is that in the
majority of popular films and TV shows many of the female characters aren’t
well-rounded or on screen as much as most of the men. There is a tendency for
women to be the secondary characters or maybe to have one main female
character. This makes it hard to really relate to and invest in a lot of the
female characters out there. Not that people don’t, but it’s not going to
attract a huge following.
Take Supernatural (low hanging fruit I know) where even if
there are a large number of women that appear throughout the series, there
aren’t many that stick around(and let’s not even go there with all of the deaths and how sexist that is right now ha)or interact with each other in a way that would
lead to a lot of shipping. Even in my lovely Hannibal fandom, the Marlana ship which
people love and people write for just isn’t going to have as much of a
following just based on the fact that they aren’t the main characters. And Marlana is a good example of a w/w ship where they aren’t objectified, don’t die, and still it’s a secondary focus. There obviously are some exceptions, but they are few and far between.
This is gonna be a very long post that features a lot of my ideas that I thought of, like, ten minutes ago. I’d like to make this into a comic/fanfic but if anyone else wants to as well, go ahead! Link it to me somehow cuz I’d love to read it and die cuz I’ll love you forever ahhh
It’s about 1,700 words, hehehe…I got really carried away. sorry about any mistakes too, I wrote this as fast as possible lol. I’ll put it under a cut.
Requests: Hiiii! Could you pretty please do a Peter Parker (Tom Holland) x reader, where she, Peter and Ned are best friends in high school and Ned is the first one to notice Peter has a total crush on her. Fast forward to noticing she feels the same and trying to get them together? Bonus points for Spiderman? Thank youuuu 😘😘 @betty234
ahhh i’m in love with your blog!!! also very much in love with spider-man (tom holland….) soooo if you’re still taking requests, would you write one about peter parker being your best friend but obviously both of you like each other so you go do “couple-ish” things like cuddling while watching movies, etc. but one day you go out shopping (him carrying your bags whilst trying on clothes haha) and something happens so he has to go fight crime but ends up coming back, etc., fluffy/cute. ty! xx
A/N:I tried my best
not my gif
Y/N looked around the cafeteria looking for her best friends, Peter and Ned. She has been friends with them ever since the 4th grade when they took her to the nurse’s office after she scraped her knee at recess. They instantly clicked and have been inseparable since.
She spotted a head of light brown locks(i swear his hair is slightly reddish though), Peter Parker. Y/N walked up to the table that him and Ned are sitting at, clutching the now wrinkled paper in her hand. “Guys! I passed my math test!” She squealed as she sat down in front of the boys. Ned smiled. “That’s great! What grade did you get?” He asked with the smile still there.
“I got a 97! Ms. Busch said I got the best grade in the class.” She said still grinning. “You should be thanking me for helping you study.” Peter said with a cheeky smile on his face. “Why thank you Peter Parker,my knight in shinning armor, for helping me not fail the worst class in the world.” Y/N stated dramatically. Ned started dying with laughter even though it wasn’t that funny.
“So, what’d you guys do over the weekend?” She asked as she started eating the food off of Peter’s plate.
“I watched all of the Star Wars movies. It was awesome.” Ned told. “What about you Pete?” Y/N asked again.
“What? Oh, I-I went to the movies with…. with my Aunt! Yeah, yeah with May.” Peter answered awkwardly. Ned looked at him with a ‘dude, your'e such a fucking liar’ look, on his face. “Well that’s cool. What movie did you see?” Y/N asked while having a look of confusion on her face due to Peter’s sudden awkwardness. “Well, that’s the thing, it was some chick flick. I don’t really remember the name.” Peter lied. It’s not like Peter could tell her that he was busy beating bad guys up and getting his ass beat as his alter ego, Spider-Man.
The three of them continued talking about random nothings until they heard the bell ring, signalling the end of the lunch period. The three of them started heading to their next class, Chemistry, which they gladly had together. Y/N walked to the class and put her backpack on the lab table with her head on top, groaning. “I don’t want to be here.” She groaned as her friends laughed at her. “It’s alright. We’ll get through this together.” Peter said with mock sympathy while patting her back. Y/N gave him a childish glare as she sat up to see Ned staring at his 2 friends with an odd look on his face.
“What are you staring at?” Peter asked as he looked at Ned, who was looking between his friends “Oh, it’s nothing.” He replied with sarcasm and a small, almost non existent smirk on his face while Peter just shrugged it off. Y/N just groaned again as she pulled out her notebook from her bag. The tardy bell hadn’t rung yet so the trio continued their conversation from lunch Under the table, Peter reached for Y/N’s hand. Their hands intertwined with each other like it was routine, because it was. The two held hands all the time because it was something that came so naturally to them.
“So, do you guys want to go to the mall this Saturday? I have nothing to do, and I want to hang with my best buds.” Y/N asked with a smile on her face. “I can’t. I am swamped with homework.” Ned answered, sounding over exaggerated. Peter knew that Ned was just trying to set him up with Y/N, due to his forever-long crush on the girl. “What about you Petey? Are you just going to leave me hanging by myself?” She asked sarcastically.
Peter chuckled as he lightly squeezed her hand. “I would never leave you hanging.” He said just before the bell rang, silently thanking Ned for having too ‘much homework’.
“Since you never leave me hanging, do you want to stay the night on Friday since we’re hanging out Saturday?” Y/N whispered to Peter. “Sure, I gotta tell May though.” He whispered back with a smile as he leaned back into his chair to listen to the teacher.
Friday quickly approached and the two friends soon walked to Y/N’s house together.
“What movie do you wanna watch?” Y/N asked as she hopped on her bed in her PJs, next to Peter. “Whatever movie you want to watch.” He replied.
“You are too corny, Mr.Parker.” She said as she picked up a dvd that was on her bedside table. She opened the case and put the disk in her laptop. Y/N wrapped her hands around Peter’s torso, and she draped her leg over his. Peter put his arm around her and pulled her close to him. This was completely normal for them.
Halfway through the movie Y/N fell asleep on Peter’s chest. Peter smiled lovingly at the girl on top of him thinking about all the reasons he loved her. There was too many to count.
“This looks so bad.” She complained to her friend whom was carrying all of her bags while waiting outside of the fitting rooms of one of her favorite stores. “Come on. It can’t loo that bad. Let me see.“Peter begged as he placed the bags down on the floor. Y/N walked out of the dressing room wearing a dress that looked absolutely stunning on her. Peter just stared, with his mouth opened a bit.
"In what world does this look bad? You look amazing.” Peter gushed as he admired his best friend. “This is why we are friends, Peter Parker. You are the sweetest person I have ever met.” Y/N stated. Peter’s phone buzzed as Y/N went back into the dressing room to change back to her regular clothes.
Peter got a notification from Twitter. There was an armed robbery happening a few blocks from the mall he was just at. He didn’t want to leave Y/N alone but, people could get hurt. “Y/N? Listen I, I gotta go. Something came up. I’m sorry.” He shouted to the door as he sped off to his house to get his suit. “Wait, what? Peter!?” Y/N yelled as she tried to pull of the rest of the dress.
Y/N left the dressing room to see all of her bags on the floor, where her best friend should’ve been.
Y/N left the mall after buying the dress. She hailed a cab to get home.
About two hours after she got home, it was already dark out. Y/N was in her room, scrolling on her phone when she heard a loud knock on her window. Nobody ever knocked on her window so she was a little bit scared. Y/N went to pull the curtain to see who was on the other side of the glass. Hwn she saw the red suit, she looked confused. “What the fuck?” she said as she opened her window. Spider-Man crawled in through the window and fell against the floor. There was slashes all over his body.
“What the fuck?” She said again as she went to get a bag of vegetables to put on the bruises he most likely had, and some other medical supplied like peroxide and bandages. As she was taking off the body part of his suit to try and fix him she asked him, “Why the hell did Spider-Man show up at my window like this?” Still shocked, she put some peroxide on a cloth and then put that on his cuts. The man wheezed at the pain. He reached for his mask to pull it off. The mask slowly pulled off of his face and Y/N started to see that his face was laced with a painful expression. She only noticed who the man was when he took the mask off completely. “B-Because I’m Spider-Man.” Her best friend replied.
Y/N was not at all prepared for this. The end of her day panned out differently in her head. "Oh my god. Oh my god.“ She exclaimed as she wrapped his body with bandages. Nothing was said after that though. Once Y/N was done with his wounds, she just sat on her bed, flabbergasted.
The two were silent before she spoke. "Does Ned know?” She asked as he started to sit up and lean against her wall. he only nodded his head.
“Why didn’t you tell me, Pete?” Y/N asked the question she was dreading. “I-I don’t know. I just wanted to keep you safe. If someone found out how much you meant to Spider-Man, they could hurt you and I didn’t want that to happen.” He replied rubbing his neck and looking at anything but you.
“I just wish you would’ve told me. We couldv'e fought crime together.” Y/N joked as she saw a faint smile apear on Peter’s lips. She stood up from her bed and moved to sit next to him on the floor, against the wall. “No more secrets, okay? Even if that means I get hurt. You have to promise to tell me everything from now on. Promise?” She asked with a faint voice. “I promise.” He swore, looking into her eyes.
“Guess I have to tell you something else than….” Peter muttered as he scratched his neck again. Y/N looked at him with curiosity. He sighed, putting his head in his hands.
“Peter, what is it?” Y/N asked with concern.
“I love you, okay? I have ever since 6th grade and I wanted to get over it but it’s hard because I know you would never like me back. When I see you everyday, I fall even more in love with you and I don’t know how to stop it and I don’t think I want to. You mean everything to me. And I would hate myself if you ever got hurt because of Spider-Man.” He exclaimed. Peter was glad to get that off of his chest but, he might have just ruined his friendship with you, forever.
“Oh Peter Parker. You have no idea what you do to me.” She said as she straddled his thighs and caught his lips in a kiss. He was shocked but also relieved that he didn’t get rejected. You pulled away, desperate to get air into your lungs.
“I have loved you for the longest time, Peter. You are my best friend and I trust you with everything. God, I wish you would’ve told me that you loved me sooner.” Y/N said, cutting her speech short, being desperate for another kiss. Peter pulled away with a sharp gasp, needing air. The two just smiled at each other, foreheads pressed against one another. Both of the teens were panting from the heated kiss. “And you should also be glad that Spider-Man is one of my favorite superheros.” She said, making Peter laugh.

It had been some time since I had wifi, so I ventured to the library to download K-Dramas for entertainment purposes. This is My Year in K-Dramas. The last two are recent and I have watched them with wifi because I am in a better place. Yay!!
1. Oh My Venus
This drama started out being really sad to me, then it became rather weird, but then I thought it was cute. It is one of those dramas that I would definitely say I enjoyed. Without wifi and cable, it was also hard to watch a second or third time. By the third time, I just went through my favorite episodes/moments. Would still recommend! 4.5 STARS!
(HENRY IS THE CHERRY ON TOP)
2. Cheese in the Trap
Now this one I was actually kind of bored with until about the fifth episode. Sorry, but true. I had a hard time understanding why it was popular. Of course, though, I did enjoy watching it after getting into it. After some time, it had me hooked and trying to figure things out as it went and the male lead had me all confused and stuff! Kekeke Would I recommend? Yes. 4 STARS!
(SEO KANG JUN IS THE SUGAR IN MY LIFE)
3. Liar Game
This one I stumbled upon by chance. I looked it up on Google and decided the synopsis made the show seem very intriguing. So I downloaded it and enjoyed every second of this mystery thriller!! From beginning to end I was hooked, like a fish on a line!! I could not get enough of the show and even checked to see if there was another season. I still need another one. TOTALLY DAEBAK!!! 5 STARS
(SHIN SUNG ROK PLAYS EVIL SO WELL)
4. Descendants of the Sun
THIS ONE!! Yes, this one. This drama I kept in my files for a long time, even after I moved TWICE(!!!!). I love this drama from beginning to end and may have watched it about ten times… Without skipping episodes. I love it so much, I had the poster as my phone’s background and had ringtones. I am not ashamed!! Song-Song couple is love, dude!! This one breaks the record. WAY PAST 5 STARS!!!
(THAT SONG JOONG KI THOUGH)
5. W: Two Worlds
Now tell me why Lee Jong Suk said he wants to play a more masculine type of character when he did such a cool, manly job playing as his character Kang Chul?! He is the definition of perfection and I love him so much. I started feeling rather odd when I wanted him to catch me in a bathroom. Like, I volunteer to be scared like that!! All semi-joking aside, the drama is freaking awesome and the story line was well thought out. I would like to meet the writer and get some tips. 5 STARS!!!
(PLEASE TORTURE ME LEE JONG SUK)
So many favorite scenes, so much bromance. Is it bad of me to say I loved this drama from beginning to end, too? I hope not. Although, for some reason, I wasn’t too into the beginning scene of the first episode. I shrug when I think about it because I have no idea why I’m not pleased with it. Gong Yoo did amazing acting out the battle and the movements were great and everything, but eh. ANYWAY! This drama had me swooning over anything and everything and even made me feel lonely af. I super love love it, though and totally watched it again and again!! Another one that broke the scale!!
(YOOK SUNG JAE WAS AWESOME)
7. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo
I just recently finished this one, so fresh out of the mind reaction. Here goes. NAM JOO HYUK, STOP STEALING MY HEART!!!!!! The story was great and the acting was even greater!! I love that it’s not the typical thin boy loves thin girl. Noooope, nope, nope. I am so in love with the story, I may go watch it again. With each episode, I had to make sure I was breathing because Nam Joo Hyuk kept me from breathing correctly. The love scenes were so cute and well thought out and that’s what really had me feeling like a high school teenager again. Oh, those feelings of blissful love. Sigh. I would definitely recommend this drama that peoples ears would fall off. I’m so in love with it. ANOTHER SCALE BREAKER!!!!!
(NAM JOO HYUK PLEASE TAKE MY HEART)
Thank you so much for reading!! (If you did) I know it was super long and not well typed, but I was afraid of mentioning any spoilers. Please keep in mind that I really did enjoy each and every one of these dramas. No harm, no foul.
Got a drama you want to recommend I watch and review? Leave me a comment/message! Thank you!! Heartu!
Hi! I hope you are having a great day. As someone who likes DCAU's Wally West I always wanted to know your opinion about him in the episode "Flash and Substance" (the Flash apreciation episode): Do you think Wally being caring and super nice is a reflection of how awesome he is or he has became a better superhero/person by working with the other Leaguers? Maybe both? Sorry for the lenght of the question, take care :)
Both, I think!
“Flash and Substance” really pinpoints why I love Wally so much as a character. Even with powers, he’s the most human member of the league–and, in a lot of ways, he not only serves as the heart of the team, but keeps it grounded in its collective humanity. That’s been canon since before JLU: in “A Better World,” the sole difference between the Justice League and the Justice Lords is a living Wally West.
But “Flash and Substance” is the first time we really see the Flash in his element. In the League, he comes off as a goof-off and often as a minor player, and “Flash and Substance” is where we learn why. Wally is essentially a local hero. His heroics, and even his relationship to his villains, are grounded in his community. His day job is in law enforcement–specifically, the less flashy end of it. He fights supervillains, but that’s a relatively small aspect of how he engages with the people of Central City. (We get a glimpse of that earlier, too, in another of my favorite episodes, “Comfort and Joy.”) He’s just a really, really good dude.
If Batman is the mastermind/general of the league, Flash is the social worker. He’s not solving global problems, but he knows every single person he’s encountered by name, and he treats them all like people.
There’s a scene midway through the episode that gets discussed a lot, where the Flash, Batman, and Orion encounter the Trickster in a villain bar. They’re trying to get info on a rogues’ plot to attack the opening of the Flash Museum–and this, above all other moments, is where you see why the Flash is so goddamn great.
Batman and Orion, true to form, are ready to beat the information out of the Trickster. Flash, horrified, calls them off, sits down with the Trickster at the bar, and gently convinces him not only to tip the heroes off to the other rogues’ plans, but to check himself back into the psychiatric hospital from which he’s escaped with a promise of a visit and a game of darts (”the soft kind”). (And you know he’s gonna follow through, too, because of “Comfort and Joy.”)
Orion is floored. Batman is impressed. Flash is nonplussed: to him, this is how being a superhero works.
And that’s why Wally West is the best guy in the Justice League, and “Flash and Substance” is my favorite episode of JLU.
New to YOI? Have no idea where to start because the ao3 feed is gross? Look no further than your own starter pack right here!
Here are some of my favorite (Victor & Yuuri related) fics that I read when I first entered the yoi fandom! I haven’t really read a lot of non-pairing fics but if people suggest some I will gladly add them in!
Just because Yuuri isn’t big on social media, doesn’t mean his fans aren’t.
This was the first YOI fic I ever read & it’s absolutely hilarious! It’s written sort of like a reddit thread, but the reactions are amazing to read. A good place to start if you’re not really into fanfic.
Viktor and Yuuri can be in love all they want. Honestly, Yuri doesn’t give a fuck, so long as their romantic bullshit doesn’t interfere with his life. But… for some reason, it’s like Yuri can’t enter a room without being utterly smacked in the face with their cheesy adoration for one another. Sharing a rink and a city with them is a nightmare – plain and simple.
Can I just say how great this fic is? I think this is probably one of the earlier fics I read as well, and it still makes me crack up. Yuri’s characterization is spot on and his thought process is so…hilarious and fascinating.
It’s difficult to believe that he’s inspired people like this; that children and teenagers in Japan and around the world lace up their skates or put on skates for the first time and think of Yuuri Katsuki, just like they think of or thought of Victor Nikiforov. He almost can’t take it. It’s too unbelievable. He’s just… Yuuri, after all. Yuuri Katsuki with a stack of gold medals is still just Yuuri Katsuki. He can imagine Victor repeating the same words back to him with his own name and how he’d argue that is absolutely not the case, and he laughs inwardly a bit at that.
A sort of alternate future timeline where Yuuri wins gold medal after gold medal – make it rain. I love this fic because it’s kind of like a fix-it to soothe the fanfic-sized gap where I want Yuuri to win everything and be happy.
“Pair skate?” Viktor’s eyebrows rise toward his (definitely not receding! He’s going thirty, not fifty) hairline. Yuuri nods, determination shining in his eyes. His face is close enough to Viktor’s for his breath to tickle the other’s skin. “Your short program is made for it. And you want to keep surprising people, don’t you?”
Ah yes, the famous pair skate. Since season 1 left us with a fanfic gap as to when they had the time to even make the pair skate, this fic is a pretty awesome substitute.
AU in which Yuuri still doesn’t remember the banquet, somehow doesn’t blow Japanese Nationals, runs into Victor at the World Championships, and has absolutely no idea why his idol is suddenly friendly and incredibly handsy. Does Yuuri care about his reasons? No. It’s Victor Effing Nikiforov.
This fic was recc’d to me by a friend, and it was so worth the read. Somebody needs to give Victor a serious chill pill, though. These boys drive me nuts with their lack of communication skills (although that’s a trait from the show haha.)
Here’s a tragic sentence: Victor Nikiforov tore his ACL in his right knee during the 2015 Grand Prix Series in the middle of his free skate. Here’s what’s actually tragic about it: He did nothing wrong. After an injury at the GPS that prevents his 5th consecutive win, Victor vows to return to skating to reclaim his title. Katsuki Yuuri is a ballet danseur who suffered a similar injury years before and made a successful comeback. Yuuri choreographs and coaches Victor through his toughest competitive season yet, but as it will always be, they fall in love along the way.
This is a great semi-AU because although Victor is still a world champion figure skater, Yuuri doesn’t compete and Yuuri becomes his coach instead. Love!
Despite the smiles famous violinist Victor Nikiforov puts on for the world, he’s been in a slump for almost two years, and no longer views himself as worthy of his fame. When he’s paired up to play a duet with esteemed pianist Yuuri Katsuki, he finds inspiration once again, and maybe even something more.
I honestly love this fic so much. Victor’s depression is really well written and his journey to find happiness and purpose again is so amazing and aaaahhh.
It’s become a game, of sorts, to anyone privy to the fact that the pattern exists in the first place: ask Victor out at the beginning of the month, date for however many days, and wait for the end to come and for Victor to say, always: I couldn’t fall in love with you. Let’s break up. Or, Victor is a retired actor looking for love, and Yuuri happens to be the (un)fortunate soul to unwittingly ask him out at the beginning of the month. Except relationships don’t come with a script, and it’s much harder understanding love than roles.
This is like, an angst fest, but with a happy ending. If you’re up for a couple thousand words feeling like smacking their heads together, because oh my god, communication, guys, it’s important!
“Victor,” Yuri begins, lowering the eighteenth sketch of the figure skater Victor drew this week, “you have a fucking problem.” in which Victor is an artist, Yuuri is his figure skating muse, and Yuri is so done hearing about their stupid love story through Instagram.
Artist!Victor and Model/Figure Skater!Yuuri are two things I didn’t know I needed until this fic. This is over 100k words though, so you’re in for a ride.
1. I respect you, Glitchtale is not like one of those worlds where everyone is at death's door but never dies; 2. Are you gonna revive people using their SOULS, since Betty still has them in possession, and they aren't technically dead (Well that's just me); and 3. WHY ARE YOU SO FRIKIN' AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEE *crys* I want ur awesomeness *Blueberry star eyes* TEACH MEEEEEEEEEEE (Apologies for long ask >~<)
1- Thank you, I appreciate it.
2- If I ever revive something it’d be only because there is a WAY to make it happen AND because it’s extremely necessary to make an important progress to the plot. Regardless of that, I will have AND KEEP some deaths permanent and y’all are gonna have to understand and live with that xD
I think that was the crux of the entire Supergirl episode this week. Even though Mr Imp (please don’t make me type out his full name) turned Kara’s world upside down, he actually had a very important purpose on the show- he asked the question that was on everyone’s mind since Mon El fell from the sky: “Why him, Kara?”
For all his Daxamite arrogant and brutish ways, why would Supergirl, a feminist like no other, want this man as her partner- both in life and out there, fighting side by side her.
Kara is a woman and somehow people forget that women can make up their own minds. We actually have autonomy of mind which is rooted in our inherent dignity to make our own choices, create our own path and bloody hell, love who we will.
Time after time, in this episode, Kara reiterated a vital point- you may love someone but you don’t get to force them into loving you. You choose to love someone and you put them first- always. Say what you will about Mon El, but at least he didn’t use intergalactic power to conjure up a super villain just because he wanted to be loved.
To some, Mon El’s constant ‘wanting to save the honour of his lady’ may have been annoying and even Kara thought so- personally, it was so damn cute to watch him be one-upped by an imp- an alien lepricorn.
Kara chose Mon El…warts and all. No one is perfect on this green, beautiful Earth and in the heavenly and not-so-heavenly alien worlds on Supergirl. Even the delicious Clark Kent has his faults. The point is that Kara has thought about all of Mon El’s misgivings, she has hemmed and hawed about her feelings for him for months now, she has thought and overthought this through…
Why can’t we trust her choices? Why are we eager for her to always save the day with her awesome powers but when it comes to something as basic as her making up her own mind about who she wants to date, we are already making a long list of cons.
Kara is brave, daring and so many other heroic things but she is also damn smart- a characteristic she needs to be given more credit for; can everyone just breathe and let her live her life? Let her be with Mon El because she wants to…
In all the craziness, it’s him she wants by her side…this boy from Daxam who she yells at, who makes her laugh unfailingly and who always has her back.
A boy from Daxam and a girl from Krypton…just figuring out how to keep the world spinning…because nothing is stopping them…
wait hold up you remember the wall coming down? Can I ask you about your memories of the Soviet Union disappearing and how that felt to you? I know how my parents' generation felt about it, and I'm curious to know what the people in between felt. Obviously only if you have time/interest!
Well – okay, yes, I do remember the wall falling, but for some context, I was nine. So while I remember the day the wall came down, it’s mainly because I did not know what the fuck was going on and my parents were very bad about explaining it.
I was born in 1979. By the time I was aware of the world around me, the cold war was essentially over. I did not grow up, as much of the younger boomer generation and most of GenX did, under continual threat of mutually assured destruction. By which I mean you can hear people a few years older than me talk about how they just assumed they would die in a nuclear armageddon, and I never had that sense. (Until, uh, recently.) I didn’t even have much of a frame of reference when it came to “USSR as a hostile entity” because by the mid-eighties we were actively trying to de-escalate and thus we’d begun the slow migration away from “Russian as default bad guy” in movies. Which I wasn’t allowed to watch anyway.
To put this in perspective both geopolitically and personally, when the Berlin Wall fell, my maternal grandparents were in Russia, and moreover were on their way to Berlin. I don’t remember my parents, including NOTABLE WORRIER My Mother, even being concerned about this before my grandparents left. Going to Russia in the late eighties as Americans was probably not comfortable but it was possible, and my grandparents did it because Gran was crazy and Packa was ride or die for her. (They asked me what I wanted from Russia and I told them “a hat like the ones Russian soldiers wear!” and fucked if they didn’t bring me back a rabbit-fur earflap hat that Gran got for ten bucks on the black market. How did she find the black market? My grandmother, everyone.)
So the day the Berlin Wall falls, I emerge from my bedroom expecting the kitchen to be lit and my parents to be cooking breakfast with my baby brother, because that was our normal routine. Instead, I found my parents sitting in the dark, listening to the radio, terrified. I knew something huge and life-changing had happened but I had no idea what, and at the age of nine had no real ability to comprehend it. I didn’t understand the fear of destabilization; I didn’t understand that my parents had lived with the Berlin Wall since they were nine. It seemed like a good thing to me – when the TV news started showing it, everyone in Berlin (wherever that was) seemed really happy about it, so why was every adult I knew so freaked out?
Gran and Packa sent us a telegram later that day telling us they were fine and were on their goddamn way to Berlin because in no universe will the fall of Communism disrupt my Gran’s travel plans, God rest her soul (unlikely). In addition to my awesome rabbit-fur hat, which I still own, they brought us a bag of cement chips from the Berlin Wall.
Essentially, I had never seen that region of the world as a particular threat. The USSR as an entity held no inherent significance for me, so the end of it – which had been coming for a long time at any rate – did not impact my life, except that for like three years all our geography and history books were out of date. Now, as an adult, I understand its significance and I can see why it must have been terrifying, but there’s no emotional link there for me, and no real memory of it happening, because it had already been in process for years.
So, yeah, I guess that’s about it – I really never knew much about any of it until after it was over, when I was studying it in high school in the late nineties.
