So About That Whole Thing

LONG COMIC BOOK RANT INCOMING:

Okay some things need to be said:

1. If you’re going to write a smug thunk-piece about the “failure” of “diversity” in comics, maybe don’t use the cover image of a book that’s had 4 collections on the NYT graphic books bestseller list, won a Hugo and cleaned up at Angouleme. Just because you HOPE it’s on the chopping block, oh Riders of the Brohirrim, doesn’t mean it is.

2. I will tell you exactly why Ms Marvel works: it didn’t set out to be Ms Marvel. We were originally going to pitch it as a 10 issue limited series. I had a 3 issue exit strategy because I assumed we were going to get canned. There was no “diversity initiative” anywhere–getting that thing made at all was a struggle. It was a given that any character without AT LEAST a 20-year history would tank. Everybody, myself included, assumed this series was going to work out the same way.

3. That freed us–by “us” I mean the whole creative team–to tell exactly the story we wanted to tell. We had nothing to lose, nothing to overcome but low expectations. That gave us room to break a lot of rules.

STUFF THAT IS DIFFICULT TO REPLICATE AND IMPOSSIBLE TO PLAN:

1. Unexpected audiences. We are at a point in history when the role of religion is at a tremendous inflection point. What I didn’t realize was that the anxieties felt by young Muslims are also felt by young Mormons, evangelicals, orthodox Jews, and others. A h-u-g-e reason Ms Marvel has struck the chord it has is because it deals with the role of traditionalist faith in the context of social justice, and there was–apparently–an untapped audience of people from a wide variety of faith backgrounds who were eager for a story like this. Nobody could have predicted or planned for that. That’s being in the right place at the right time with the right story burning a hole in your pocket. Plenty of other stuff I’ve written and liked has fallen with a huge thud. That’s the norm. Exceptions are great when they happen, but hard to plan.

2. The paradox of low expectations. The bar was set pretty low for Ms Marvel, but because of Ms Marvel’s success, that bar got set much higher for similar books that came later.

STUFF THAT IS ENTIRELY AVOIDABLE:

1. This is a personal opinion, but IMO launching a legacy character by killing off or humiliating the original character sets the legacy character up for failure. Who wants a legacy if the legacy is shitty?

2. Diversity as a form of performative guilt doesn’t work. Let’s scrap the word diversity entirely and replace it with authenticity and realism. This is not a new world. This is *the world.*

3. Never try to be the next whoever. Be the first and only you. People smell BS a mile away.

4. The direct market and the book market have diverged. Never the twain shall meet. We need to accept this and move on, and market accordingly.

5. Not for nothing, but there is a direct correlation between the quote unquote “diverse” Big 2 properties that have done well (Luke Cage, Black Panther, Ms Marvel, Batgirl) and properties that have A STRONG SENSE OF PLACE. It’s not “diversity” that draws those elusive untapped audiences, it’s *particularity.* This is a vital distinction nobody seems to make. This goes back to authenticity and realism.

AND FINALLY

On a practical level, this is not really a story about “diversity” at all. It’s a story about the rise of YA comics. If you look at it that way, the things that sell and don’t sell (AND THE MARKETS THEY SELL IN VS THE MARKETS THEY DON’T SELL IN) start to make a different kind of sense.

Solar System: Things to Know This Week

Our ongoing exploration of the solar system has yielded more than a few magical images. Why not keep some of them close by to inspire your own explorations? This week, we offer 10 planetary photos suitable for wallpapers on your desktop or phone. Find many more in our galleries. These images were the result of audacious expeditions into deep space; as author Edward Abbey said, "May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.”

1. Martian Selfie

This self-portrait of NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover shows the robotic geologist in the “Murray Buttes” area on lower Mount Sharp. Key features on the skyline of this panorama are the dark mesa called “M12” to the left of the rover’s mast and pale, upper Mount Sharp to the right of the mast. The top of M12 stands about 23 feet (7 meters) above the base of the sloping piles of rocks just behind Curiosity. The scene combines approximately 60 images taken by the Mars Hand Lens Imager, or MAHLI, camera at the end of the rover’s robotic arm. Most of the component images were taken on September 17, 2016.

2. The Colors of Pluto

NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft captured this high-resolution, enhanced color view of Pluto on July 14, 2015. The image combines blue, red and infrared images taken by the Ralph/Multispectral Visual Imaging Camera (MVIC). Pluto’s surface sports a remarkable range of subtle colors, enhanced in this view to a rainbow of pale blues, yellows, oranges, and deep reds. Many landforms have their own distinct colors, telling a complex geological and climatological story that scientists have only just begun to decode.

3. The Day the Earth Smiled

On July 19, 2013, in an event celebrated the world over, our Cassini spacecraft slipped into Saturn’s shadow and turned to image the planet, seven of its moons, its inner rings — and, in the background, our home planet, Earth. This mosaic is special as it marks the third time our home planet was imaged from the outer solar system; the second time it was imaged by Cassini from Saturn’s orbit, the first time ever that inhabitants of Earth were made aware in advance that their photo would be taken from such a great distance.

4. Looking Back

Before leaving the Pluto system forever, New Horizons turned back to see Pluto backlit by the sun. The small world’s haze layer shows its blue color in this picture. The high-altitude haze is thought to be similar in nature to that seen at Saturn’s moon Titan. The source of both hazes likely involves sunlight-initiated chemical reactions of nitrogen and methane, leading to relatively small, soot-like particles called tholins. This image was generated by combining information from blue, red and near-infrared images to closely replicate the color a human eye would perceive.

5. Catching Its Own Tail

A huge storm churning through the atmosphere in Saturn’s northern hemisphere overtakes itself as it encircles the planet in this true-color view from Cassini. This picture, captured on February 25, 2011, was taken about 12 weeks after the storm began, and the clouds by this time had formed a tail that wrapped around the planet. The storm is a prodigious source of radio noise, which comes from lightning deep within the planet’s atmosphere.

6. The Great Red Spot

Another massive storm, this time on Jupiter, as seen in this dramatic close-up by Voyager 1 in 1979. The Great Red Spot is much larger than the entire Earth.

7. More Stormy Weather

Jupiter is still just as stormy today, as seen in this recent view from NASA’s Juno spacecraft, when it soared directly over Jupiter’s south pole on February 2, 2017, from an altitude of about 62,800 miles (101,000 kilometers) above the cloud tops. From this unique vantage point we see the terminator (where day meets night) cutting across the Jovian south polar region’s restless, marbled atmosphere with the south pole itself approximately in the center of that border. This image was processed by citizen scientist John Landino. This enhanced color version highlights the bright high clouds and numerous meandering oval storms.

8. X-Ray Vision

X-rays stream off the sun in this image showing observations from by our Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR, overlaid on a picture taken by our Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The NuSTAR data, seen in green and blue, reveal solar high-energy emission. The high-energy X-rays come from gas heated to above 3 million degrees. The red channel represents ultraviolet light captured by SDO, and shows the presence of lower-temperature material in the solar atmosphere at 1 million degrees.

9. One Space Robot Photographs Another

This image from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter shows Victoria crater, near the equator of Mars. The crater is approximately half a mile (800 meters) in diameter. It has a distinctive scalloped shape to its rim, caused by erosion and downhill movement of crater wall material. Since January 2004, the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has been operating in the region where Victoria crater is found. Five days before this image was taken in October 2006, Opportunity arrived at the rim of the crater after a drive of more than over 5 miles (9 kilometers). The rover can be seen in this image, as a dot at roughly the “ten o'clock” position along the rim of the crater. (You can zoom in on the full-resolution version here.)

10. Night Lights

Last, but far from least, is this remarkable new view of our home planet. Last week, we released new global maps of Earth at night, providing the clearest yet composite view of the patterns of human settlement across our planet. This composite image, one of three new full-hemisphere views, provides a view of the Americas at night from the NASA-NOAA Suomi-NPP satellite. The clouds and sun glint — added here for aesthetic effect — are derived from MODIS instrument land surface and cloud cover products.

i was trying 2 uncover anything about cherry bomb but kept hitting a dead end??? like rip it was impossible to create a theory ,,, on a pair of cherries ,,,,, & a bomb ,,,,,, UNTIL.


i had to think bigger. u all know exo right? Supposedly they’re aliens with superpowers that come from another planet, ‘Exoplanet’.

Could it be? That after following the huge™ success of exo, SM wanted to further continue this legacy?

A Saros is known to be a period of approximately 224 lunar months that can be used to predict eclipses of the sun and moon.

There are many different Saros cycles numbered from cycle 1 all the way to cycle 180 and still counting.

this song is a message from nct 127 (planet GJ 504B) to the other ‘undiscovered’ planets/moons. aka the other nct units yet to debut & the hidden members waiting to stand on stage so desperately. they’ve all trained together but due to this unit concept, they rly can’t stand as one one stage just yet.

Also i need 2 mention that it was actually confirmed that only 1 of 5-6 exoplanets has been directly discovered. we all kno that nct has this “limitless” unit concept. but i do feel like there will at least be about 6-8 major nct units overall ??? does each unit belong to an “exoplanet”? a different moon?

Hello graphic makers!! You’re probably aware that there is a huge problem on tumblr with whitewashing. Or maybe you’re not. As a predominantly disney-based blogger, the whitewashing I personally see are from the disney fandom, so I’m going to use screencaps from those movies to show you several quick techniques so you’ll see just how easy it is to have your pretty bright and pastel colour palettes and not whitewash characters of colour.

Here’s the full transcript of Mark talking Darkiplier in the livestream

(Time approx. 3 hours, 52 minutes to 4 hours, 4 minutes into the stream. And, yes, this took forever). Thought you’d like this, maybe.

I’ve bolded stuff I find especially interesting.

Mark: Long ago, a long time ago, I liked to do these scary edits because I just felt like doing scary edits and this is how Darkiplier got born. And then what happened was over time Darkiplier became less and less about the scary figure and more about this romantic figure, and it always rubbed me the wrong way. And I kind of shied away from Darkiplier for a while. And I really really really- if I was going to bring Darkiplier, and when we thought about this, we thought, okay there should be a Darkiplier route. And that was there from the beginning, and so when I wanted to do it I wanted to do it my way, and I wanted to do it right, and I wanted to have this unending level of creepiness. And at the same time, I didn’t want to step on the toes of Antisepticeye because I know there’s a big fan base of that, and I didn’t want to get in the way of that at all and I really don’t care that there’s more than one dark personalities of people. But when I saw the opportunity to have this character here, I spent like 8 hours editing this, like just meticulously every single RBG. This is a layer, we green screened this one, I color corrected it, I separated the RBG layers I added the shakes and glitchiness every frame. I worked on the voice, too. The voice took me the longest to figure out. Like the shakes! And my computer was dying this whole time cause I put my effects on here.

Tyler: The amount of time you had to spend rendering this.

Mark: And so, the audio’s actually three separate layers. It would have been two, but Kathryn helped me out on that one to make it more clear. It’s a normal pitched layer that’s edited, echoed, reverbed, mastered, and convoluted which means it’s just thrown off to the left and right, and then it’s a deep layer of that. But then to make it really come together- it didn’t live without this center channel that wasn’t convoluted but was centered. But getting that voice right was so pinnacle, so paramount to what I wanted to come out of this. And we did like thirty minutes of shooting various versions of me talking to the camera and I wanted to pick the exact dialogue that really kind of gave away my idea of what Dark is in not a terribly obvious way.

Tyler: The other thing, this was supposed to all be one video.

Mark: But YouTube annotations, this new version doesn’t allow you to link the same video multiple times, so these are literally the old videos that I first did when Darkiplier first came about, like, these are the ones, especially this one here, and then this is my cheap knockoff Darkiplier.

Amy: Canon Darkiplier.

Mark: Canon Darkiplier. And I’m going to readily admit something. I joked about Darkiplier because it didn’t seem like something people wanted to take seriously, and I’m okay with that on certain aspects but it had diverged into multiple different facets and multiple different personalities, and everyone had their own version of Darkiplier, and I thought it was hilarious that, “Hey, here’s my version of Darkiplier, and he’s an idiot.” Like, he’s just this weird emo kid. And then I stepped back from that, like, I stepped back. And you can even- in that time, when I was doing those videos, in this era, I was not very happy. I was kind of… I was pessimistic about a lot of things. And I felt like that bled through in a lot of things I did. And that’s why even October of last year I literally made Darkiplier an emo character. And then when we were getting to this, I thought about it like very carefully and I thought back to why I did it originally, and I did it originally because, well, Darkiplier wasn’t even a thing. Darkiplier was not a thing when I was making those videos. I just wanted to make some creepy stuff. And then I thought about that, and I was like if I want to make a statement about who this is, I need to own that and I need to put something out there that is not ambiguous, because I realize that’s where I went wrong. I didn’t have a solid character so obviously, people would come up with their own versions, they would fill in the gaps where they saw fit. So, when I made this I had to embrace it fully and fine-tune it down to exactly where I wanted. When you choose the “fake” choice carrying through to this one, I really wanted that to come through, except at the end to this video, where it gets silly, but that’s because the real me comes in and the real me’s an idiot. And I’ve actually watched this over and over again because I’m listening to the takes I put in here and I’m listening to my inflection and my tone, my demeanor and I’m imagining like how to refine it better next time when I bring him back, like how to do it better.

Tyler: I remember now, I set up the table.

Mark: Yeah, you did. You set up the table we had to change it out for clear glasses because the green screen was reflecting through. But yeah, even this, like the intersplices of anger, and this is me getting real deep in the meta of Darkiplier, like if that’s even a thing that can be- let me just pause it here. I don’t read too much into this but if there’s something that I want to take seriously, I want to actually do right. So, in my mind, Darkiplier is an entirely different person from me. But, much like Warfstache, doesn’t obey the laws of physics. He exists in another world entirely and bleeds through into this one. This is sounding really nerdy of me.

Tyler: I remember the Warfstache talk.

Mark: So Completely unironically, Darkiplier is a completely separate entity from who I am. But, he admires what I’ve accomplished, and he’s very much… people picked up on this, and people thought it was really creepy, because it’s what I wanted. He’s a social manipulator. He is literally, 100% manipulative. He leads you into this false sense of security, and he wants you to trust him because he wants to take advantage of you. That is literally what I wanted for Darkiplier. And how creepy and scary that actually is from the surface. Especially in this first bit, where he says, “If dinner is what you want, then I can provide.” And I wanted this to come across in a seductive way while also masking, like, this burning rage inside that breaks through the suave nature of it. That was my clue to reveal he’s not your friend. He’s not here to help you. He’s here to use you. And that also came across when I was thinking about, like, the effects. Like, his image shatters, he separates because he’s not entirely kept together, you know what I mean? So, I wanted like the drastic impacts of the rage pulling back suddenly to the calm nature and the demeanor and this last one, I was thinking was especially telling. It’s not me trying to break through, it’s his shell cracking.

Kathryn: I love that.

Mark: Yeah? It’s my favorite of all of them.

Kathryn: That’s one’s my favorite. I have legitimately just gone and watched that bit.

Mark: Yeah?

Kathryn: It’s really good.

Mark: Oh, thank you.

Kathryn: I really like that.

Mark: Yeah. And number 1 the visuals work hard on this one, but nailing the audio- that high-pitched ringing that a lot of people were like wow that really hurts my ears, that was by design. That was supposed to hurt because listening to him- a lot if inspiration for him comes from G-man from Half-life 2 and 1, like this weird interdimensional person that seems human but is obviously not and doesn’t obey the laws of physics, and is just like this shell of a person that’s in a suit. Not a suit, literally a human suit, and is trying to figure out how to puppet it right that you believe him, but he’s really good at it. And that’s where the scariness of Darkiplier, I think, really comes from, is because he seems like someone you can trust, and he will manipulate you, and take advantage of you, and literally use you, and to me that’s terrifying. Like that’s the antithesis of what I want to be and so if I’m going to make an opposite version of me, he’s gonna be the fucking worst. Like worse than any romantic story can ever bring about. He’s fucking awful.

Amy: It was convenient, though, I like the way it goes from Relax to this, like the video “Relax,” because then people were not expecting this. But it’s so nice to have it on Valentine’s Day. It works so well.

Mark: And then came the bullshit transition that we had to do. So, this is comical in a way.

Amy: It doesn’t drag it though.

Mark: Yeah it doesn’t drag. You get the scary. Tyler’s here-

Tyler: In Mark’s suit, which I have fit in, but not the pants.

Mark: He didn’t fit, we forgot to get a tie, like, we printed out a mask, and I looked at this and was like I could try to make this creepy, and then I went, I objectively can’t. Let me throw in some punch sound effects.

Tyler: I have to make sure, cause-

Mark: He couldn’t see shoot.

Tyler: No, I couldn’t, and I had to keep moving the mask cause there was one time we did this that the mask ended up completely on the side of my head and I was just like, hey Mark, you can’t touch my face.

Amy: The convenient thing about this, though, with all the glitches is that you can hide stuff with it.

Tyler: Yeah, and there’s a reason I never let go of Mark I have no clue where anything is.

Mark: Yeah, oh man. Oh, this, oh my god. Oh, and secret Easter egg- you know who Dark is because he doesn’t have a shadow. Totally intentional and by design.

Amy: His toes are missing too, but.

Mark: Shh he doesn’t have toes he’s so scary.

Digital Painting: tips for beginners

Heyo! I got asked if I could make a tutorial on digital painting so I’m gonna throw together some advice meant for people who are starting out and want to figure out exactly how this stuff all works. Because it’s hard! What I hope to accomplish here is to make painting more approachable for you.

For those of you who don’t wanna bother reading that, here are the main points:

1. Learn your program and its tools, from brush properties to layer styles. And I mean learn them. Make a cheatsheet that shows you exactly what each button and scale does, both in isolation and in conjunction with other buttons and scales. Refer to this as much as possible until it is intuitive. The end goal is to know exactly what to do to your brush’s settings to achieve a given effect.

2. It’s perfectly okay to use your sketches, linearts, and other forms of line in your paintings. They can help guide the form and there’s no need to make something fully “lineless”! I never make things “lineless.”

3. Study other people’s art and try to think how they could have possibly achieved the effects they did. You can learn a lot just by observing and mentally recreating the process stroke by stroke—muscle memory is a powerful tool at your disposal. This becomes easier to do once you’ve started doing item 1 above.

OKAY!

So where the heck do you even begin?

What I’m gonna do is try to make digital painting as approachable as possible for someone who’s never really done it. The main idea here is that digital painting is just like real painting. So if you’ve ever done real painting, you already kinda know what’s coming.

I’m gonna assume you know the basics of digital art: you can sketch, line those sketches using layers and opacity changes, and fill the lines with color, maybe even opting to add some shading…and you’ll get something like this:

You know, cell-shaded, or maybe the shading’s blended, but you’ve still obviously a line drawing with color put down on layers beneath the lines.

The next intuitive step is to try going “lineless”…but when you remove the lines you get this:

When I was first teaching myself to paint digitally, I didn’t really know how to deal with this. Without lines, the form of the subject vanished or became a mess like the above. Even if I was meticulous and careful about placing down the color such that without the lines layer turned on, the shapes fit together, it didn’t look quite right. There’d be gaps, I wouldn’t know how to incorporate the subject into a background, the contrast wouldn’t be high enough, or it’d just in general look too much like a screenshot from Super Mario 64.

Painting requires a different process than the above. You’ll have to let go of some of your habits and conventions. Such as staying in the lines. Such as fully relying on the lines. Like, I love my lines, I love my sketches—but in painting, they are guides for form, and are not the form itself. So let me go through how I approach a given painting:


My painting process starts with a sketch (here a boring portrait for demonstrative purposes). I make the opacity of the sketch layer something like 30%, and then throw down my base colors on a new layer underneath. I’m not being meticulous about the sketch itself, because again it’s just meant to guide my placement of color. I’m also not meticulous about my placement of the color.

We’re essentially sketching with color. Because ultimately what we want is for the color to take on the form and shapes conveyed by the sketch.

There’s a lot going into this about how to use value, how to shade, how to use color, etc. that I’m kinda skipping over because it takes a lot of time to explain…but there are hundreds of tutorials out there on those topics so please, google around! I found some helpful tuts that way when I was starting out.

Something I find v useful is to keep selecting colors that already exist in your image for shading and hue adjustment. This is why I start with really blendy, low-opacity brushes when throwing down color on top of the background. I can then select colors within there that are a mix of the two.

For instance, I’ll select the color of the lines here:

…and use that to shade:

And maybe I’ll select one of the darker shades around his eye, but not the darkest, to make the shading a smoother gradient…and so on.

What I do in general at this point is go over the shapes and lines of the sketch. Such that I can turn off the sketch layer and see this:

I’m replacing the lines with shading and value. I’ll continue to do this as I keep adding color.

This is all super loose. I am not dedicated to any particular stroke. I just want the colors and shading and light source to be right. I’ll use overlay layers to boost contrast or add a hue.

Here are other examples where I used this process:

I am constantly changing brushes and brush settings as I paint. It really depends on what effect I want where. I am also constantly selecting new colors and applying or blending those in. I don’t believe in having some uniformly applied base color and then shading with only one or two…that’s what I’d do if I was cell-shading like the first drawing I showed you here, but painting should be about messing with color and opacity and blending to make millions of hues!

Good rule of thumb: Hard, opaque brushes for applying color. Soft, dilute brushes for blending colors. Sometimes hard, dilute brushes can make some cool blending effects! I personally prefer harder edges on my shading so that’s a brush I use often.

This is getting a bit long so I’m gonna split it up into multiple parts, but really what I want you to get from this is:

1. learn the tools at your disposal until they are intuitive

2. sketch and line are guides for form, not the form itself

3. rather, hue and value will produce the form

And of course, practice makes perfect!!! Every drawing you make, every painting you make, will bring you one step closer to the artist you want to be, and thus every drawing and every painting, no matter what, is a success.

Random Loot Table

I consistently have players looting conquered foes, random strangers, ruined villages, etc.. And the truth is I almost NEVER know what they’re going to find. Usually I just spout some nonsense at the top of my head and it often ends up being dull, leaving my players less likely to look for items while adventuring in the future. I created this table to help give me a guideline for random loot, and it lets players feel lucky when they roll high and find something unexpected.

Yuri on Ice interview translation - CREA 2017/03 (p32-33)

This is the full interview with Mitsurou Kubo published on CREA. I actually wanted to translate all the YOI interviews together but some translations going around urged me to post this one before the others, as I wouldn’t be able to finish everything tonight.

It’s not really an interview, it’s more like a partial interview and a short commentary of each episode.

The other 4 short interviews are with Kenji Miyamoto (choreographer), Eiji Abiko & Junpei Tatenaka (figure skating animators), Yuuko Sagiri (original costume designer), Keisuke Tominaga (music producer). I will try to post them tomorrow night if I can finish them.

The reality as expressed by 5 people who created “Yuri on Ice”

Reality #1: Story x Mitsurou Kubo

“The reality of emotions” is what Kubo-san gave most importance to when she created the manga storyboard for this series. “Simply listing up the contents of the skaters’ programs and their score and connecting them together is not going to create something emotional. In my storyboard I tried to convey the feelings of all athletes, not just Yuuri, with their performances, to express them carefully, so that other skaters who watch them will in turn be influenced by them like in a chain reaction.”
An important tool to express those feelings are the monologues that can be heard during the programs, blended in harmony with the performance.
“Watching the footage of the choreographies by Kenji Miyamoto-sensei I realized that, even though he simply created them based on the songs, in many cases they perfectly match the athlete’s feelings too. I was so moved and thought that Kenji-sensei is an amazing person.”
As the series is pursuing reality, it does not contain any unrealistic techniques.
“If we had included something over-the-top people would have just said ‘that’s unreal’, so I thought that it was better to just go a little ahead of reality, and consulted with many people to decide the difficulty of the techniques to use. However, shortly thereafter real life skaters actually surpassed that level, which really surprised me. We did decide the level knowing that it would be surpassed one day, but we didn’t think it would happen so soon!”
The writer Mitsurou Kubo also needed a lot of courage to portray Yuuri determined to win for love.
“On the ice rink you can express anything, and that’s why, even if I had never thought about what true love is or represented it before, I decided to try my hand at openly depicting love as fiction. As a result, I myself was encouraged by the story I wrote and felt that I could make a fresh start after that.”

#1 Nan no Piroshiki!! Namida no Grand Prix Final
“I want you to watch the best figure skating animation”
Before the series was broadcasted I was worried, because normally original anime not based on a previous work and airing late at night take a long time to catch the viewers’ attention. However, my fear was swept away by the extraordinary skating scenes of the first episode, and the show gained a good reputation right away. Stunning images can provide the best promotion.

#2 Futari no Yuri!? Yutopia no Ran
“Figure skaters feeling more familiar”
This part is set during the off-season in Yuuri’s hometown. If we had showed special people battling each other in a faraway place from the very start the viewers would never have felt close to them, therefore I decided to start the story with the Russians, Victor and Yurio, spending time in the onsen of the castle town Hasetsu, eating katsudon and spreading news via the SNS, so that they would feel more familiar to the audience.

#3 Boku ga Eros de Eros ga Boku de!? Taiketsu! Onsen on ICE
“You can feel the growth of Yuuri and Yurio”
Once the Grand Prix series starts no one can afford to lose anymore, so I created this provisional match between Yuuri and Yurio to emphasize their relationship as rivals but also as comrades. I also wanted to show that a competitive program is progressively brushed up during the season based on each athlete’s pace. Originally I also thought of showing Yurio’s mother rushing to the scene.

#4 Jibun wo Suki ni Natte… Kansei!! Free Program
“Yuuri and Victor gradually become closer”
In the process of completing the free skating program Yuuri and Victor become closer to each other, both as coach and student and as equals. Yuuri’s gesture of poking the top of Victor’s head has no logical meaning. I think it symbolizes how Yuuri, acting on an impulse, breaks his own shell and steps into the territory of the person that previously was only considered a living legend.

#5 Kao Makka!! Shosen Da yo! Chuu-shikoku-kyuushuu Senshuken Taikai
“Check out the relationship between seniors and juniors”
Minami-kun, a skater that looks up to Yuuri, appears in this episode. I really like the scene where Yuuri, finally becoming aware that he is going to lead the current generation of Japanese skaters, silently hits Minami-kun’s back. As in the scene where he pokes Victor’s head, once again Yuuri uses a physical action, instead of logic or words, to try to communicate something. When it’s animated it looks really awesome.

#6 Kaimaku Grand Prix Series Yacchaina!! Chuugoku Taikai SP
“Check out Chris’ sexiness”
The tournament starts and many fascinating athletes make their appearances, but this episode is also an occasion to fully enjoy the charm of Chris’ ass. After watching Kenji-sensei’s choreography I decided to draw a beautiful ass in my storyboard, then its charm was further emphasized in the animation, and finally thanks to the voice actor’s absolutely sexy voice we could obtain the best ass animation ever.

#7 Kaimaku Grand Prix Series Yacchaina!! Chuugoku Taikai FS
“An FSP where Yuuri and Victor overcome their fears”
Yuuri and Victor were both anxious before the FS, and I feel that the strongly emotional scenes following that were represented in a very effective way. Regarding the last scene, I started receiving lots of questions from overseas, asking “Did Yuuri and Victor hug? Or was it a kiss?” and that’s when I realized how much the anime’s popularity had spread worldwide.

#8 Yuuri VS Yuri Osoroshia!! Russia Taikai SP
“JJ’s striking appearance is a must see”
This episode is where Jean-Jacques Leroy, aka JJ, one of the most likely candidates to win the gold medal, appears. What is scary about JJ is that he has the ability to paint any story in JJ color, overshadowing even the protagonist. Mamoru Miyano-san, the one who played his role, managed to take JJ to the next level with his natural personality and made him all the more convincing.

#9 Yuuri VS Yuri Osoroshia!! Russia Taikai FS
“When the absence of an important person makes you grow”
This episode is where Yuuri grows after fighting without Victor next to him. When we went location hunting at the Fukuoka airport there was a glassed-in corridor close to the arrival lobby, and as the director saw it she excitedly said “Yuuri and Victor are going to run side by side separated by the glass!”. I was like “they definitely are!”, and we started taking heaps of pictures. The airport is currently being remodeled and it’s not possible to recreate the scene.

#10 Chou Ganbaranba! Grand Prix Final Chokuzen Special
“Ordinary life episode the night before the last fight”
As the last part depicting ordinary life before the Grand Prix Final, I wanted to create a relaxing episode without skating scenes while at the same time introducing the athletes, but in the end so many things happened in it that no one could relax and I was told that even animating it was a pain. The ring Yuuri gave Victor also carries the meaning of a symbol that the two of them are like soul mates.

#11 Chou Chou Ganbaranba!! Grand Prix Final SP
“The speed leading to the last episode is impressive to watch”
The OP footage, that was gradually changed from episode 1 by adding colors, is finally complete. I was happy that we could welcome as voice actors Ken Gamada-san, who actually works as an MC in tournaments and ice shows, and Nobunari Oda-san as himself doing the commentary. With the pace of the story speeding up toward the finale, this episode was just chaos.

#12 Chou Chou Chou Ganbaranba!!! Grand Prix Final FS
“A final episode where you can catch a glimpse of everyone’s future”
Including Stéphane Lambiel-san’s debut as an anime seiyuu, which is something no one could have expected, the chaotic mixup of anime and reality reaches a climax in this episode. Beside the sense of fulfillment for the victory, I think that the contents also let you catch a glimpse of each character’s future. I was about to faint looking at the beauty of Victor’s tears.


Final note (this is just my opinion, it’s not part of the translation): There is a translation going around where the line about soul mates is translated as “proof”, but actually the word 証 (akashi) can have many different meanings, among which symbol/mark/token/proof/sign etc. In this case, I personally do not think it means “proof” (also to be honest when it’s “proof” usually they write it as 証拠 shouko). It’s more like symbol/token, as in “it’s meant to symbolize Yuuri and Victor’s deep bond that goes beyond a normal relationship”. Although the difference is only subtle, I still think it’s not the same. Also please understand that the Japanese word “soul mate” does not have the meaning that is used in fanfiction… I believe it’s actually the same in English too, but in normal conversation it means “two people that have a strong spiritual/emotional bond (that makes them suited for each other, be it either as friends or lovers)”, not “two people who were destined to be together from their previous life”. That is something you are free to imagine or fantasize about, however please do not twist the creators’ words just to fit people’s headcanons…

P.S.: And please do not misunderstand me. I love Victuuri, but I prefer to draw a line between canon and fanon, and I don’t really like it when words by the creators are “adapted” to accomodate people’s shipping ideas. I think what she says is deep enough even without mistranslating it anyway…

That shot is incredible ! Would you perhaps consider showing us part of your process ? I just assumed you used 3D for the camera movement, it's amazing.

I shall present thou my process, but consider that it ‘ll be the exact same process as any other animation, it’s basicly like “i did a rough and a tie down, and i cleaned it”.

I assume that by asking this, thou wanted to know some “ways” of doing this kind of thing, but sadly i didn’t use any tricks, and i could have of course, but i just felt that if i was trying to find a way to avoid doing it, i would just not be doing it, and the rsult would have not been the one i wanted.

So in order to make this process as interesting as it could possibly be, i’ll try to explain my thought during each steps as much as i can.

So here is the rough, basicly if i recall correctly this was like my third version (i didn’t find the other one) i tried to have here “key moments” and not exactly “key movements”, i tried to define the most importants parts of the curve my camera’s describing. The thing is, i wanted to be sure where to slow down the pacing of my camera, and when to speed it up, and at the same time i wanted to know what the crowd would looks like.

Here’s my kind of tie down, it’s the thing i used in order to do the cleaning later, here, i juste came back to re-define a little better the last part, the fast parts are easier to read and i know where my characters are.
Something i also did (and lost by now so i can’t show it) is like a top view map of the crowd, with each character to always help me remember where each one is.

Note that i cleaned and colored the “ghost” first here, as he’s hiding characters, i wanted to know exactly where he would be to avoid unecessary drawings.

And here whe have the final cleaning, here is the part i’ll need to explain the most, because sadly there’s no real “inbetween” before this part and the tie down.


The first thing i did was to clean all the images i already had during the tie down, then i got all the models checked with the character designers Lady Hagdahl Sörebo and Lady Zhang to be absolutly sure that the things i would be inbeetwining would be the exact models  (i thought lady Hagdahl Sörebo was going to die during that part).
The thing i did at the same time was to define the size of the brush during each “key moments”, you may notice on the gif above that the further away the characters are, the thinner their line is.This is one of the thing that helps achieving this “3D like” aspect, it helps feeling depht in each frames and makes your eyes’s understanding of each characters easier.

Once i had my key movements perfectly lined, i started beaking it down, i inbetweened all the images i had, BUT i started to think about each characters’s movement, you may notice it , but the characters are not all totally still, some of them are moving, doing something, for exemple, the xingtiang (the ball-like things with arms who carrys bowl of food) wave their arms and bowl a little as they can’t exactly sustain their weight perfectly.
It’s that part that helped creating life in that shot, if the characters had been just standing still, the shot would have felt flat, and a bit life-less.

Once i had all my characters on models, my lines’s size defined, and my characters animation set in stone, i just had to inbetween everything to reach a ratio of 25 frames/1 second, it’s what we call a 1′s exposition in french, i don’t know how to say it in english, but the important part is that it helps your eyes understanding the movement, and in a shot with so many characters, and a movement as fast as this one, it was absolutly necessary to have everything at one, it’s also one of the thing that helps achieving this 3D effect, as we tend to see most of our 2D animation at 2 or 3 and our 3D animation at 1 (or 0.5)

And we’re nearly finished! after that i just colorised the characters, once they were, i was sure of the negative space around them, and were to put the confettis you see on the ground, it’s an other thing that helps defining depth in the shot, a solid ground under the feets of the characters.

And of course once i had everything in place i just had to add the flying confettis! I animated them straight ahead, as i already had my camera movement and my characters it was child’s play to guess the size, the orientation and everything else; it’s like animating in 2D on a 3D scene, thou know exactly where thou are, but it doesn’t have the cons 3D scene have, the space isn’t so big you get lost in it, thou know exactly what’s on screen, and it doesn’t feel dead.

I wanted them to flow through in order to lead the eyes of the audience and to make the whole movement flow more fluently, this way thou don’t look too much at all the characters and thou don’t get lost in the details, because thy eyes are attracted by the colored and bright moving dots through the image.

And that’s it! 
An other intersting thing about this shot is that i cuted it in 3 parts in order to simplify the tvpaint file.
It means this process only cover this part, which is the second one, the others weren’t exactly done the same way, but the process was more interesting for this part, that’s why i didn’t added the others.

The bond between Yuzuru and Shoma

So, as opposed to the usual media angle of Shoma vs Yuzu, Hero’s has decided to put together a program about their relationship, as seen from behind the scenes footage. Most of the articles/reports are now focusing on the relationship between Yuzu and Shoma instead of the previous angle of rivals, because this time they had the shared role of Japan’s representatives as opposed to being individual skaters.

Shoma: Right now, when I’m practicing, my motivation is the desire to achieve the ability to win over Yuzu-kun. That’s the only motivation and, in order to continue growing, I would like to continue forward without changing this feeling.

Yuzu: I’ve often been told that I’m in a position of being chased by others but, if you think about it, just like how we found out with this SP, there are still many people I have to chase after. After all, after the SP the one who was standing in first place was Javier, and the one who was third was Patrick. Of course, the young skater Uno…Uno-san…U-Uno-san? *frowns at himself and laughs* Uno-senshuu** too (was in the top 3). There are many things that I don’t have, so in a manner of speaking, everything is to me, something/someone to chase after.

How to Start an Art Journal

Here are some hints and tips to help encourage and inspire you!


1. Buy a journal or sketchbook with blank white pages so you can express yourself freely without the constriction of lines. (Or if you prefer lined pages, that’s great too!) The thicker sketchbook pages are great for practice. If you don’t want to go through the trouble of buying a journal, printer paper works as a good canvas.

**Using cardboard behind your pages when painting is a good technique to help keep paint from leaking and helps it dry faster.**

2. Purchase some basic art supplies like watercolor paints, acrylic paints, spray paints, letter stencils, colored pencils, multicolored sharpies, Staetdler fineliner pens, etc… These supplies don’t have to be fancy and expensive to work. Take some time to figure out what you like to use and what effects you want to produce with your art.

**A lot of popular journaling techniques involve creating a watercolor background and a mixed media layered effect for their creations. But, this is about you! Get creative and experiment!**

3. Use words, quotes, images, mixed media, and simple and elaborate drawings to create personal pages that express who you are as an artist and writer.

**Get out of your comfort zone and draw things you wouldn’t normally draw. If you don’t like what you’re creating, give yourself time to grow and learn. It’s important to be patient with yourself and let go of your high expectations. Give yourself credit for trying and keep practicing! Don’t give up!**

4. To learn more about art journaling, you can always use Google for more information, look up tutorials on Youtube, check out books from your local library, or even take online art journaling classes. Some classes are even free! There are tons of resources for you to research.


**Don’t wait until the “time is right” or when the “inspiration hits you.” Dive right in and go for it!**

1. Practice hand-lettering your favorite words.
2. Practice using calligraphy for your journal entries.
3. Draw your favorite silly emojis.
4. Draw symbols that hold significance to you.
5. Illustrate a cute scene from your favorite TV show.
6. Create your own comic book page inspired by a day in your life.
7. Make your own mandala and color it in.
8. Make a favorite quote page.
9. Fill an entire page with random doodles.
10. Dedicate a page to your fictional or irl crush.
11. Tape in photos from your favorite trip and add meaningful captions.
12. Illustrate a page on how to cheer yourself up when you’re upset.
13. Use stencils to create word art that describes how you feel right now. 14. Cut out your favorite adjectives from the newspaper.
15. Make a “Truths and Confessions” page to release some tension.

You’ve seen them. I’ve seen them. The story is going along so well. The character is critically wounded in a dramatic fight; they’re ‘rushed to the hospital’ (more on that later). Drama roils! Will they live? Will they die?

And then… And then the writer (screenwriters, I’m looking at you, too) pulls one of these tired, inaccurate tropes out from under the couch cushions, and you roll your eyes. They’ve Done the Dumb, again. You swear. kick your coffee table. How do they write such crap? Crap like…

(okay so i must apologize b/c this is more a meta about Bakugou and Todoroki’s relationship overall instead of what you asked, even tho you said you were fine with that earlier. sorry about that!!!)

i can’t see it as a romantic relationship, personally

i think Bakugou is still angry at Todoroki for giving up during their fight at the sports festival. at the very least, he still holds a bit of a grudge over it. Bakugou doesn’t take anyone implying that he’s weak lightly, and Todoroki refusing to use his fire powers during their fight, after he used them against IZUKU, implies a lot for Bakugou:

1. that Bakugou is less impressive than Izuku. this is a very big sore spot for Bakugou, beccause he has a lot of personal issues that stem from his fear of Izuku actually having the potential to surpass him, and it’s the reason he began bullying Izuku in the first place.

“IF I CAN’T GO ABOVE DEKU, IT DON’T MEAN A GODDAMN THING!!!”

2. That Todoroki doesn’t see Bakugou as worthy to use his flames against. which, again, is a sore spot. this implies that Bakugou isn’t strong enough or is too weak to have the honor to fight against Todoroki’s fire.

“Am I not strong enough for ya?”

3. Todoroki wasn’t even trying in their fight because he didn’t see Bakugou as worth fighting.

of course, the reason why Todoroki didn’t use his fire was because he was going through a lot of emotional issues, and Bakugou was at least somewhat aware of this. 

he did overhear Izuku and Todoroki’s discussion about Endeavor and what he did to Todoroki and his mom.

the bottom panels show up immediately after Todoroki’s.

how long Bakugou was listening in and how much he actually heard is up for debate, but we do know that he did overhear about Todorki’s home life and his declaration against Endeavor and his resolve not to use his flames.

however, Bakugou has a massive inferiority complex, particularly in reference to Izuku, and the fact that Todoroki was able to use his fire against Izuku is what really bothers Bakugou. Todoroki isn’t even trying to win during their fight. 

he isn’t even bothering.

look at how upset Bakugou is here. he looks like he’s about to break down in tears.

that’s how important this was to Bakugou. he’s literally about to cry because of this. and one of the reasons this fight was so important for Bakugou comes from early on in the series.

“THAT ICY BASTARD! NO WAY I CAN MEASURE UP TO HIM, EITHER…!!”

immediately after Bakugou lost to Izuku during the Heroes vs. Villains exam, after Momo explained exactly how Bakugou fucked up for the entire class to hear, Todoroki comes and finishes the exam within minutes.

he barely had to do anything and he fucking won without breaking a sweat. in other words: he completely showed up Bakugou after Bakugou lost control, got angry and totally fucked up.

it was the first time Bakugou realized that there are people out there that are stronger than him. that there are people that he might not be able to beat. it was the first time Bakugou realized that he might not be the best, and he was faced with the fact that he might not be able to hold a candle to Todoroki.

so for Bakugou, their fight at the sports festival was very, very personal for him. 

“… YOU PLAY TO WIN!!”

hell, even for a moment, Bakugou actually agreed with Izuku when he cheered Todoroki on to fight his all against Bakugou.

but Todoroki was distracted; with his home life, with Endeavor, and worse (in Bakugou’s point of view), with Izuku.

it’s just moments before their fight, and Todoroki doesn’t even acknowledge Bakugou when he accidentally barges into the wrong room. 

no, instead of acknowledging Bakugou, Todoroki immediately starts talking about Izuku.

Izuku, Izuku, Izuku, Izuku.

of course this pisses Bakugou off. this is HIS FIGHT and Deku is already fucking with it and he’s NOT EVEN THERE

i do think that Bakugou was trying to help Todoroki in his own way. he was trying to get Todoroki to understand that his fire is just a biological function of his body. it’s his own power, no one else’s.

there’s a reason why Horikoshi specifically had Bakugou say these lines, especially during Izuku and Todoroki’s fight.

however, i think the reason why Bakugou did this was mostly to get Todoroki to overcome his hesitance because he wanted to fight Todoroki at his full power. think of it as Bakugou saying “Get the fuck over yourself and fight me at your full potential so I can prove myself.” 

(tho a bit of it may be because Bakugou does care, just a bit. the stricken expression he has after Todoroki explains his personal history is very telling, and it tells the audience that it did affect Bakugou somewhat. 

“And since I don’t give a shit, feel free to use that fucking flame side on me…!”

he very specifically denies caring about Todoroki’s personal history, tho he may have just done so to rile Todoroki up to get him in the mood for a fight. but also because he really just wants to fight against Todoroki’s flames)

he knows why Todoroki doesn’t use his fire. but he still used his fire against Izuku. and Bakugou wants part of that, he wants to fight Todoroki on equal ground and prove that he’s the best.

Bakugou wants so badly to test himself against Todoroki because of what happened during and after the Heroes vs. Villains exam. he wants to prove himself against Todoroki, to prove that he can beat this kid that he once thought he couldn’t. he wants to have a fair fight against Todoroki and fucking WIN without any of Deku’s bullshit getting in the way, and yet it’s already interfering before the fight even starts.

that’s why Bakugou was so angry that Todoroki wasn’t taking this fight seriously. that’s why he was about to fucking cry at the end of it, when he won. because he didn’t win due to his own strength, he didn’t prove himself in any way, he only won because his opponent refused to go all out against him, and that’s a huge slap in the face for Bakugou.

there isn’t any point in winning a fight where your opponent doesn’t even try to fight against you. and Bakugou hates being underestimated and taken lightly.

and again, this was a huge personal insult against Bakugou in particular. he wanted to prove something to himself but Todoroki just wasn’t in the right headspace to fight back at full power. 

of course, none of this is Todoroki’s fault. he had a lot on his mind.

but for Bakugou, this is all extremely difficult for him. he continues to hold this grudge against Todoroki prior to the second exam, where he threatens/challenges both Izuku and Todoroki.

hell, he even says Todoroki’s name here, which shows how serious he is. Bakugou never says anyone’s name, unless he respects them or they got his attention. i’m fairly certain that, during this moment, it’s not out of respect; Todoroki just royally pissed Bakugou off and part of that manifested as Bakugou using Todoroki’s name to show just how angry and determined he was at this moment

tho Bakugou does seem to calm down a bit after the second exam, after he was forced to work with Izuku.

even afterwards tho, where they’re paired up during the trial of courage, Bakugou is trying to get a different partner, any other partner besides Todoroki, because he’s still pissed about what happened.

(lmao i’m fairly certain Ojirou doesn’t wanna pair with Todoroki because he got his ass royally kicked by him in the first exam)

i think that Todoroki is trying to make up for what he did to Bakugou in his own way, but doesn’t really know how. he realized that he did Bakugou a disservice during their fight, and feels bad about it. 

i believe this is why he tried so hard to rescue Bakugou when he was kidnapped by the League of Villains/AFO.

out of all the kids, he was one of the few who was 100% set on rescuing Bakugou from the start. absolutely nothing would stop him from going and rescuing Bakugou. 

now, the reason why he was so dead set on this is up for speculation. 

personally, i think part of it was Todoroki trying to make up for what he did to Bakugou during the Sports Festival by helping to rescue him. 

part of it may be because Bakugou was kidnapped from right in front of him and he couldn’t do a thing to stop it, and he feels responsible for it.

another part may be because it’s part of his ideal of what a hero should be, which is rescuing people when you know you have the ability to, regardless of the consequences (which may be a call back to the Stain incident with Iida. if he and Izuku hadn’t shown up, Iida very well could’ve died)

anyway, the point i’m trying to make here is that Todoroki holds no ill will towards Bakugou. rather, he feels bad for letting Bakugou down, and tried his damnedest to rescue him, even after Bakugou made it clear that he doesn’t like Todoroki. 

in fact, they seem to have a fairly….. amiable relationship, at least for Bakugou’s standards.

it’s mostly just…. Bakugou getting angry and shouting, and Todoroki just not really reacting to him. i’m sure Bakugou is still fairly angry about everything in regards to Todoroki, but it doesn’t seem quiet as….volitile or personal as before.

and again, Todoroki holds no ill will towards Bakugou. there are only two moments where Todoroki seems truly angry or frustrated at Bakugou, and one of them is when Bakugou brings up his home life (which. yeah), and the second is just because he’s frustrated that Bakugou wants to use his explosions in the forest in order to fight the villain, which would only cause them more problems.

i think Bakugou is slowly letting go of his grudge. very, very slowly. it was a very personal issue for him and it’s hard for him to just let that go. but after seeing All Might retire and feeling like the cause of it, and feeling all that guilt… not to mention, he now knows the story behind Izuku, All Might, and One for All, and is actually supporting Izuku (someone he hated for so long). 

his feelings are becoming somewhat healthier now that most of those issues have been discussed. not quite resolved, because stuff like that doesn’t happen over night, but it’s getting there.

now tho, he might be more willing to try and let some of those angry feelings towards Todoroki go. i doubt it’ll be anytime soon, however. Bakugou is someone who holds long grudges about this kind of stuff. but i think he is slowly letting them go.

it helps that Todoroki doesn’t really react to Bakugou’s anger at all, haha.

okay so i talk a lot about this headcanon and i decided to finally do a detailed meta about it.

first and foremost, let’s talk about what c-ptsd is. c-ptsd stands for complex post traumatic stress disorder, a differing disorder from the more common ptsd. it’s worth noting that c-ptsd isn’t an officially recognized disorder in the DSM - it’s been deemed too similar to ptsd and bpd for its own diagnosis, but it’s still used informally and i believe has its merit. i have ptsd, and would describe it more specifically as c-ptsd.

anyway, onto the specifics, and what this means for sasuke himself:

Dear everyone victim blaming this girl who exposed Xander Berkeley.

Those of you saying she’s faked the DM’s and posting videos about how it’s done on a web browser. 

1. Her first exposing screen captures were shots from her cellphone. You can’t fake those with editing website code, and you’d have to have hours on your hands to edit the screen shots.
2. She literally uploaded videos of her logging into her account and scrolling up through the DM’s. Even if she used some website trickery to fake the DM’s, as soon as she exited out of the DM’s the code would change and she’d have to enter it all over again, but she clearly does not do that in the video.

Those of you saying the picture he drew of her isn’t of her but of some actress/TV character.
1. You are wrong!
2. I don’t want to link the picture but there is a selfie this girl took on her Twitter from March (which fits with the dates on her phone) where she looks exactly the same as the picture he drew.
3. It looks like he drew it in the same sketchbook he’s drawn other’s in.

Those of you who are saying “but she’s nineteen” or “she lead him on”. Or worse, capping her old tweets to paint her as a “slut”.

1. So fucking what?
2. It doesn’t matter who she is, when HE is a 61 year old married man with two children (daughters, I believe) who was pressuring a girl 40 some years younger than him into taking nude photos of herself for his pleasure.
3. He was using classic grooming techniques. This is often how it starts with peodphiles. They test the waters with slightly older girls, and see how well their “tastes” are accepted by editing them for reveal in the way he did may have done in saying he liked girls 15+, when the case could very well be he likes them below that age too, but 15 is just more “acceptable”.
4. This guy literally said he likes 15 year old girls. It doesn’t matter how old the girl who exposed him is.

He confirmed he has a taste for children. This man is not worthy of your sympathies. Even if by some wild stretch of the imagination he’s not sexually into teenage girls, then he is a piece of shit who is going behind the back of his wife and mother of his children while away from her to solicit nude images, and potentially more than that, from a girl who is 40 YEARS YOUNGER THAN HIM!

This is not acceptable. I know we all like to give people the benefit of the doubt, an it’s always easier to blame the young girl who you think is an “attention seeker” rather than admit the famous guy doing it is a douchebag pervert.

This guy is an “art hoe” who probably read Lolita and thought it was the hottest shit ever. He probably thinks it’s okay to look at nude images of teenage girls as long as it’s “artistic”.

Well it’s not fucking’ okay. None of this is okay. This is not a fabricated witch hunt. This guy fucked up and it should be exposed. At very least he needs to have the authorities checking his computer because I would be very unsurprised if he doesn’t have indecent images stored somewhere with this kind of attitude about young girls. Probably “artsy” and black and white ones.

Too many old white dudes get away with this shit, simply because they’re “famous” in some way or a seemingly an otherwise upstanding member of the community. This shouldn’t be swept under the carpet or excused.

All you people who are attempting to discredit this girl, calling her a liar even after the proof, are literally the reason why girls don’t report being raped and go the rest of their life haunted by the abuse they endured through fear of not being believed.

Yes, not everyone ever is always telling the truth, but you’d have to reach really hard to deny the proof this girl has put forward. If you choose not to believe it, it says as much about you as it does about him.

Summary: Jungkook desperately tries to fix his mistakes. Whether it be through his irresistibly sweet speeches or something a little more, you were bound to fall under his spell again. 

A/N: Yes I am back! Did y’all miss me? 😘 I honestly think the mothers are the best characters ever tbh (ultimate wingwoman goals). Sorry I didn’t update for so long- I had my Semester 1 exams :) As always, feedback is appreciated! 

Jungkook knew that there was nothing he could do. So why did it feel like he was waiting for a miracle to occur? He rhythmically tapped on the dark mahogany table with his slender finger, tension built up to his shoulders. He felt as though he was going to snap at any given moment. And he hated the feeling. He couldn’t stand the nausea that bestowed upon him when he thought about you. At least he knew he fucked up this time.

“Jungkook, may I come in?” A familiar voice interrupted his toxic thoughts. He quickly glanced in the direction of the elegant voice and a small smile of relief spread across his lips.

“Of course mother.” He gave her a nod of affirmation before standing up to greet her properly.

“You’re probably wondering what brings me here.” She smiled warmly at him and closed the door behind her before seating herself across Jungkook’s table.

“Sit, son. We have some talking to do.” She spoke in a gentle tone- but Jungkook was beyond intimidated. He felt like he was 4 years old again, getting lectured and scolded. But this time it was worse because it wasn’t Jimin lecturing him, it was Jungkook’s actual mother- whom before had no time to do that.

He gulped noticeably loud before looking behind his mother’s shoulder and he avoided her gaze completely.

“Is it possible for us to do this tomorrow? I’m really not feeling good today.” He confessed and his mother raised an eyebrow.

“Did you think I was here to lecture you?”

There was a small pause that intensified Jungkook’s childish fear. Despite being a grown man, Jungkook didn’t deal with authorities well because it was abnormal to have people of higher status than him.

“You’re not wrong my darling but that’s not my main intention. I’m here as a mother today. How about we sort things out together?” She suggested in a sweetened voice and gently placed her hand on top of Jungkook’s and his trembling stopped.

“As you may also be aware, I wasn’t very happy when I found out that Y/N left the company. I assumed it was because of you- you do have a reputation for firing assistants quite regularly so I wasn’t surprised. But she had so much potential and she brought out the best in you so I was generally upset when you fired her. Not to mention, you looked so much happier with her around.”

“For one, I didn’t fire her. She left because Jimin offered her a job at his company. He told her that she was a burden to me and so she left.”

Reylo - Anima/Animus - Two Parts, One Whole; a mini-breakdown (anon ask)

Thanks for the great observation anon! Now, what you’re describing is the shadow, which is - I think - related to Kylo Ren/Ben, but not in the way antis think. The shadow is something that must be faced, defeated, overcome - but also accepted and integrated with - that whole yin and yang thing. Accepting the darkness within you, but also conquering it.

I believe Rey’s shadow is Kylo Ren.

Her Animus is Ben Solo.

And the Animus - for the heroine - is a much different matter than the shadow.

It is the heroine’s soul mate, and Jung has some curious things to say that I’d like to touch on.

(Also, yes, it’s true that Kylo Ren and Ben Solo are the same person - I’m not arguing anything like that. But just as Anakin and Vader are these different personas within the same person, so, too are Kylo Ren and Ben Solo. It is an intentionally done thing in Star Wars to separate these characters by name. There is something to be said of the psychology behind a name, and by naming something - or someone - in two different ways, we can learn to separate those different aspects. This - I think - allows us to seperate Kylo Ren and Ben Solo as both Rey’s shadow and Animus. Maybe I’m wrong - I’m not claiming to be THE Jung expert. I read him as a hobby…. but nonetheless, I think I’m onto something maybe.)


Ok so let’s take a VERY brief look at Anima/Animus and what Carl Jung has to say:


So first, Plato’s Symposium is often used to show what the Anima/Animus actually is:

“After the division the two parts of man, each desiring his other half, came together, and throwing their arms about one another, entwined in mutual embraces, longing to grow into one. Each of us when separated is always looking for his other half… And the reason is that human nature was originally one and we were a whole, and the desire and pursuit of the whole is called love.”

So the Anima/Animus are looking for the other half from which they have been cleaved in two. It is about becoming whole - finding balance. Coming back to the origins of Man+Woman = One. There are not two, but rather three: Man, Woman, and Whole.

This means that the character needs more than just a good, supportive relationship with their love interest. Their love interest needs to complete them somehow - in a way that no other could.

This is not about a “match made in heaven” - at least - not for women. This is not a “prince charming” dynamic by default. In fact - I’d argue AGAINST the perfect prince charming based on what Jung has to say.

Now, I have always thought - since my first viewing of TFA, that Rey and (Ben Solo) are Beauty and the Beast. This is largely informed not only by my personal interest in and knowledge of the tale (animated, original fairy tale, AND many comparisons in modern media - such as Buffy the Vampire, for example), but also in my personal readings of the Animus/Anima. It is important to note, however, that Jung - unfortunately - limited his perspective to the male perspective, so what exactly makes the Animus distinct in relation to the heroine isn’t entirely as concrete as it is for a hero… But that doesn’t mean it isn’t there at all, or that it can’t be discussed and speculated on.

Right, so let’s look at what Jung has to say:

“[Anima] archetype is a force; it has an autonomy… You see, you have a certain image in yourself without knowing it of…the woman. Now you see that girl, or at least a good imitation of your type, and instantly…you’re caught. And afterwards you may discover that it was a hell of a mistake…[but there was] no choice at all. [The man] has been captured… That is the archetype…of the anima.”

So, unfortunately Carl Jung has - admittedly - noted that his own observations of the Animus in relation to women’s perspectives is limited. He developed his ideas based on a very limited perspective of the male mind. But we can still get some take-aways from his observation of the Animus/Anima. For the Anima/Animus, one could also conclude from the above that:

1) “…You see a good imitation of your type, and instantly… you’re caught.” This is a sort of “love at first sight,” and speaks to what is often surprising and unexpected. I’ve talked of the parallels of Beauty and the Beast, and in both cases Belle and Rey are first (1) shocked and terrified of their beast’s beast or monster form

but (2) upon viewing their beasts TRUE form (for Belle it is the painting of the Beast in the West Wing - for Rey it is the removal of Kylo Ren’s mask), they are surprised, intrigued, and attracted to what they see:

This is the “instantly you’re caught” face. And, although both are a bit in denial of that attraction at first (Belle and Rey BOTH end up running away from their captor into a snowy forest for a confrontation and a moment to test their own compassion for the Beast), Carl Jung next says,

2)”…Afterwards you may discover that it was a hell of a mistake…” So the meeting of the Anima/Animus has a certain tension to it - a push and pull (yin and yang - which as the Anon mentions is very connected to Jungian analysis) - that often leaves both parties reeling. They are certain this person is a “mistake” for them. The tension built here is very important for this dynamic - and in terms of a story builds up drama and romance. It’s really poetic, when you consider it. Both Belle and Rey seemingly suffer for their attraction, and also deny it. They try to run away, and are yet confronted again by the Beast in their effort to do so in the snowy forest. Which brings us to the next point…

3)“…[But there was] no choice at all.” This is the most important part of the Anima/Animus - it is a fated meeting. It is unavoidable - there was never any getting around it. And how do we know that Rey and Ben Solo are fated to meet? Well… there are A LOT of signs in the movie, and I don’t have the time right now to get into all of them - namely what Maz says and some other various bits and pieces. But there is the most important piece of them all.

Not only is the vast majority of Rey’s vision of Kylo Ren, but immediately after this vision she runs into him while trying to run away from her destiny.

Her destiny is ultimately unavoidable because her destiny is directly linked to Kylo Ren/Ben Solo. He is her destiny - even when she tries to run away from it.

Everything Maz says, the conversations with Han Solo (which people try to use as evidence they are related - but you are missing the point. No, they are fated to meet - that doesn’t mean related, and fits better into this Anima/Animus romantic dynamic), the vision, her attraction and the repulsion that comes with it, and ultimately the compassion she holds for him… They are all signs that these are two people fated to come across each other and change their respective trajectories forever. They will never be the same now they’ve met, and will change drastically because of it.

The big take away here is balance. As you noted, yin and yang are key and we know from visual and story cues that TFA focused on juxtaposing both the differences and similarities between Rey and Kylo Ren.

They play off of each other - they are almost in a dance with each other. He takes from her feminine nature - finding compassion and a “pull to the Light,” with a certain fascination and tenderness unprecedented in Kylo until he meets our heroine. And she, too, takes from him and his masculine nature - pulling from his rage, anger, and aggressive fighting style when she begins to stalk and snarl and clench her fists in that final showdown. However, like yin and yang, they both already have their opposing elements locked inside them. Kylo Ren has always felt a pull to the Light and compassion - that’s why he let Finn go on Jakku. He is also unpredictable with his emotions and extremely vulnerable. And Rey has a certain fierceness and a closed-off nature, where she is resistant to show her own emotion and affection. She is active, where Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is passive. She is cool-headed and thinks before she acts - where Kylo Ren/Ben is hot-headed and reacts on emotion and passion. These are things both will have to learn to balance - the masculine and feminine - the dark and the light between them both.

And when both Rey and Ben discover this balance in each other, they will become whole.

Or so I think at least, given what we have from TFA and the hints from TLJ.


For now, this is all I have time for. I want to do a bigger post on this, the Anima/Animus and how it applies to Rey and Kylo/Ben. But… Jungian analysis is not a light and easy topic to cover, and if I ever do get around to it it’s going to take A LOT of work and thought.

I’ll leave you with this: on twitter Rian Johnson replied to someone that he has been reading up on Carl Jung and Robert Bly. If we want to understand the direction of The Last Jedi, I would guess it’s best to start there.
