hello and welcome to my first studyblr post!! i’ve seen a ton of these around, but not many have all the tips i’ve learned throughout high school. i go to a private preparatory school and i’m top 5 in my class and i lead many extracurriculars. last year was the CRAZIEST year of my life, but with a certain mindset & only a few all nighters, i managed all A’s in all advanced courses. So, here are the tips i’ve learned!!

  • write stuff down!!!! i know it is the most obvious thing, but writing down anything you need to remember, whether that be homework, tests, quizzes, events, due dates, reminders…anything! checking off these things at night is so satisfying and you won’t forget anything important. when i’m in the #zone, my mind often thinks of stupid questions/thoughts. I’ll jot these questions/misc. thoughts unrelated to what i’m focusing on to come back to later and explore!! (for example, i was doing an frq for econ and i thought of doing this post, so i wrote it down in my journal.)
  • organization. there are so many masterposts out there to help you with organization. my method included binders & comp. notebooks.. that’s about it! i’m not very organized
  • get to know teachers. this is probably what helped a lot my junior year. not only is maintaining good relationships with teachers good for you, it can be beneficial to your grade as well. when you make friends with teachers you always have someone to talk/rant to & they always give you the inside gossip about teachers/other students. have coffee/lunch w them, or talk about theories from the class they teach. they give you a lot of perspectives on the course and cool ideas!
  • manage your time. again, another broad statement. but what i did every night kept me sane. my schedule every day after classes (including saturday) was:
    • practice until 5
    • extracurriculars until dinner (6:30-7)
    • minimal homework until done (usually 1-2 hours)
    • study for 1+ hours if needed (8-9 pm)
    • enjoyment time (at least 30 min)

while this may not be a lot for most people, it was a lot for me and i needed time to make myself happy. school and friends make me happy, but so does alone time. putting this minimum of 30 min a day (if i don’t fall asleep before that) really helped me get through demanding courses because i had an incentive. this schedule also helped me avoid procrastination!! ALSO, I prioritized like hell. Honestly, if homework was a completion grade, I wouldn’t try at all unless i needed the practice. Same goes with classes. the ones i had high A’s in, i would sometimes sacrifice a homework grade in order to get enough sleep or study for another test. while this is not the most ethical way of doing it, it helped.

  • Avoid procrastination. procrastination is your worst enemy. I used to be so bad, but now i’m getting better. this is key. in order to beat procrastination, you have to have self discipline. simple as that. get inspired. for many of you, it’s your studyblr community, for me it was for personal pride and competition. you must execute to get the job done. it will be worth it in the end.
  • do the little things. put away the phone. put music on if it helps. stretch a little. get some water. get as content and comfortable as you can when you study.
  • SLEEP!!!! that’s all i can say. sleep sleep sleep. it’s important. i know life is busy, but make time for sleep if you can. mental illness is a bitch, and sometimes it can make falling asleep hard. i know. just try your best & that’s enough. anytime i had free time during the day, i slept. nothing is more important than sleep, and if i didn’t get at least 8 hours of sleep the night before, i tried to catch up as best as i could. your brain needs a break to refuel and you will feel refreshed the next day.
  • Eating healthy. i rarely see this tip around (maybe i’m not searching hard enough) but i think it’s important. eating healthy is excellent for your brain function & body function. it’s hard, especially in college, to have to motivation (or money) to make your own dinner, lunch & breakfast everyday. but. it’s. worth. it. i can’t stress this enough. i feel more awake and energized at school and workouts and your body has to have these nutrients to keep functioning well.
  • Exercise. gross i know, please don’t hurt me, but exercise goes right with eating healthy. the better you feel about yourself, the better you will do in school. simple enough. you will have more motivation, energy, and happiness with a good diet and exercise. running daily and occasionally swimming gets me though the week, and while sometimes i don’t want to workout, i always feel good in the end. find something you like doing and stick to it. try to work out 3 times a week. after every workout, i am always motivated to study
  • UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL. it’s so obvious, but so many people just memorize. while you have to memorize any new thing you learn in the beginning, there is a time when you must apply what you memorized. you must actually think about why this term/concept is what it is based on memorized facts. you must see the whole picture and how little things relate and why they do. last year i realized this and it worked wonders. for me, if i understood the big picture, i knew the facts by heart. it dawned on me that you must train the mind to think. when going through notes, quizzes, tests, and studying i always asked myself why is this important and what it relates to. retention. is. key. understanding, and not memorizing facts will help so so much!!
  • STUDY BUDDIES. i can’t stress enough how much this helped me. coming from a boarding school, it’s easy to work on homework with friends all the time. to review for a test, my friends in the class would all meet and discuss the material. i’m an auditory learner, so this worked 10x better. what i’ve learned is that if you can teach it, you know it. when i could explain concepts to my friends, i knew i didn’t have to study that. if questions came up when i was trying to discuss my line of thinking, i revisited my notes and tried to understand why i didn’t get it. if we had study guides, we would all do the question and discuss why we got our answers after. for me, discussion is the best way to get new perspectives and ideas as well as understanding the topic better. (i also love talking so).
  • ask questions. even if its stupid. even if you’re just curious. always ask them.
  • study environment. outside (if it wasn’t terrible weather) is where i love to study with friends. if it is snowing or raining, i go to the library or a local coffee shop. it really just depends on my mood. find an area where you feel the most productive!
“Why do you write sad things?” is one of the hardest questions I’ve always been asked.

How could I answer that? How could I tell you that all I have is sadness, and all I can share to the world is sadness? How could I tell you that every time I get a little glimpse of happiness, I always just save it for myself, keeping it close to my heart, memorizing every details and feelings, and not writing it down because writing it down feels a lot like giving it away, like I am letting that little happiness go. How could I tell you that I write sad things to purge it out from my system? That it is impossible to write sad things without sadness consuming you to the core to the point that all you can do is to bleed it out on the paper. How could I tell you that? That I write sad things to let it out, hoping that one day it would never come back, that maybe one day, I will finally succeed in writing all my sadness away.

I feel so bad for the children who's parents spend all their food stamp money on junk food. I don't understand why you need to spend your last 150 dollars on snack cakes, chocolate, and soda when you have 4 small kids to feed..

Not your business. Heaven forbid people fucking enjoy the little things when life is fucking miserable when you’re poor. FUCK OFF! I’ve been on food stamps. We couldn’t take our kids to fun places or do anything memorable as a family. Our lives were basically check to check and on the edge of our seat to see if we could even have a Halloween or Christmas. Living poor is shit and I honestly considered killing myself so many times because I couldn’t do more to make my kids feel like kids and happy.  I’d rather pay for a poor kid to have a candy bar than some asshole who thinks poor people are the problem and not the tax evading rich people to get their second car or more.

Let me also remind you that healthy food has a high price and low shelf life. You can keep “junk” for months while a goddamn banana will go bad within three days of purchase. Not everyone can afford the gas or cab fare to drive to and from the store every fucking day. Try living on food stamps(equivalent) for a month and see if you can survive. Don’t judge til you know.

Why Medical School Is Important

This week, I learned a lesson about why medical school is so important. For 4 years, we cram everything into our heads, a little about every specialty. In the end, we all just can’t wait to specialize in our own fields and not have to remember the majority of other stuff we memorized. We can always just consult someone else if we need help right? Well… What if you didn’t recognize the underlying problem in the first place?

This week on neurology, we had a 27 year old woman who was admitted overnight for severe headache. They ended up doing a brain MRI, which showed several small diffusion weighted defects in the posterior brain consistent with strokes. We were asked to see her in the morning for evaluation of “strokes”. I was asked to read her chart and go see her. I thought it was a little odd that a healthy 27 year old had strokes, but you never know. I start reading up and see that her systolic blood pressure has been above 160 all night. They were allowing some degree of permissive hypertension for her strokes. Her creatinine was 1.4. They also assumed this was because of her elevated blood pressures. Finally, there was protein in her urine. I keep reading and notice she is 4 days postpartum. I haven’t even seen the patient yet and put the pieces together in my head. Elevated blood pressure, severe headache with visual scotomas, elevated creatinine, protein in the urine, postpartum… Holy shit, this person has preeclampsia with severe features and needs to be started on a magnesium drip immediately!

I want to go into Ob/Gyn, so naturally I was a little excited that I recognized this. I immediately went to my 70 year old attending and told him this. He looked surprised, and I could tell he probably hadn’t thought about this disease in decades since usually they are admitted to ob/gyn and not neurology. He asked me to call the ob/gyn that was on. Within a few hours, she was seen and started on a magnesium drip for preeclampsia with severe features. My attending and I went to radiology and had them re-read the scan. She had PRES not strokes. This woman could have gone home on aspirin, an anti-hypertensive, and a statin with neurology follow-up and had a seizure a day later from full blown eclampsia.

In the end, I learned about how one person going down the rabbit hole of one diagnosis can lead to a series of several providers going down it as well. It was a shining moment for me as a medical student, not going to lie. But it also showed me the importance of being well read and not shutting out my mind to other specialties. We all need to know a little about everything and when to realize our limits and consult someone else. And a lot of the time, medical school is the only immersive experience we will get in many of these specialties. It matters more than just learning for the sake of the shelves.

that scene in im2 when natasha asks tony which watch he’d like to wear in his party and she gives him a drink and tony tells her “gold face, brown band, the jaegar. i’ll give that a look”

tony has like a mental catalogue of his watches and certainly a Fashion Sense dictating his choices and i’m so weak over that on this night

This masterpost has been done over and over again to the point that you probably have this iconic list memorized.

Since this is the case, I don’t want to bore anyone with the same old explanations and instead give you some information you haven’t heard/read yet.

So to begin, I’ll start with what to include in your notes and explain exactly why doing this is helpful.

-

Notes are meant to be reviewed, the sole purpose of notes is to use them as a study method. However, many people miss the target altogether when writing out their own notes and make it much more difficult to revise them later on.

S T E P 1 : H E A D E R S

Most textbooks will make their topics and subtopics very evident in order to keep students “interested” and focused on reading the passage. In general, it makes the textbook more organized and easier to read. We want exactly this for our notes so we include headers and sub headers to help as a guide later on.

S T E P 2 : A B B R E V I A T I O N S

It is good to set up your own personal abbreviations especially for note-taking. It’s already difficult as it is trying to follow along with a teacher’s presentation so make it easier on yourself by incorporating them.

o Examples:

  • Ex. | Example
  • Imp. | Important
  • Info. | Information
  • w/ | With
  • w/o | Without
  • Pg. | Page
  • Govt. | Government
  • b/c | Because

S T E P 3 : T W O  C O L U M N

This is a method of note-taking I took from Cornell Notes. If you are familiar with them then you know that CN include two columns: one for the main information and another for questions to ask yourself later on. In the picture at the end you will see how I used this method slightly differently so that I could create a form of sub headers in the first column. Like I said, we want to be able to easily read our notes and I found that this was most helpful in doing so. Every time I went back to them it was given that I could just glance at the left column to find the information I wanted.

S T E P 4 : B U L L E T  P O I N T S

This one has probably been mentioned numerous times already so I’ll try not to drag this one on. Bullet points basically just make it easier to read the notes. When you search online for ways to make your acne go away do you read the article with paragraphs first or do you resort to the article with bullet points? Bullet points all the way. It’s easier to register the information in your mind and just makes it quicker to skim through your notes as well.

S T E P 5 : H I G H L I G H T I N G  S Y S T E M

One of the first things I do at the beginning of each school year is create a key for my highlighters. Having a set color for each part of your notes allows you to have a better understanding of your own notes and is great for directing you through them afterwards.

o Examples:

  • Green | Vocab
  • Orange | Topic
  • Blue | Subtopic
  • Purple | Title
  • Yellow | Chapter  #
  • Pink | Imp. Info.

Putting it all together, you get much simpler and extremely helpful notes! For reference, these are the ones I used to create this list:

So that’s the basics! There is so much more to note-taking, however, true to the title, these are only the basics! I will go more in depth about notes for certain classes, different types of notes, textbook and class notes, and much much more later on in the series. Please do look forward to them! Check out the rest of the series and what I have planned here.

Logan Sanders is autistic.

Alright, so, with Autism Acceptance Month in full go, and with me still not having managed to get Thomas to acknowledge this, here we go again.

Some of you may know that I made another long post about this a while back, and I am so happy that it got as much traction as it got, it wasn’t enough as the point of the whole thing was to get @thatsthat24 himself to acknowledge it. Which is why I’m doing this again. Now, strap yourselves in, because this is gonna be a long one.

I’ll get straight to the point; from watching Thomas’s Sanders Sides videos, I have come to the conclusion that Logic, also known as Logan, is without a doubt autistic. Why is that, you ask? Well, he exhibits a lot of common autistic characteristics:

  • He takes things very literally, and has a hard time with metaphors - having to use flash cards to memorize them.
  • He is often unable to tell when something is meant as a joke, and even when he gets that something is a joke he often gets frustrated by false facts. For example, his reaction to Morality’s dad jokes in the Q&A video.
  • He is incredibly socially stunted - just look at his attempt at “flirting” with Valerie in the valentine’s day video.
  • He has Special Interests - most notably poetry and crime novels. He has infodumped on several occasions: for example, in the Q&A video, when asked about his favourite book, he wanted to tell the viewer about everything that happened in the book. He has also several times used quotes from poems or poets in otherwise irrelevant conversations, and it is also important to note that he knows more about poetry than Roman, who is the one that’s supposed to represent that sort of stuff. As for crime novels, not only is his favourite book a murder mystery, he has also dressed up as Sherlock at one point, and his favourite disney movie is Big Hero 6, which could be seen as a crime story considering it’s about a bunch of kids trying to figure out who a certain criminal is.
  • He has difficulties comprehending emotions, especially the emotions of other people. His knowledge of psychology and body language seems entirely like something one has read up on in a book - it doesn’t come naturally to him. He’s also, word for word, said: “Emotions, the bane of my existence”, which implies that he just… doesn’t understand them.

There are more, too, but these ones are the most prominent ones.

It is also worthy to note that, as mentioned earlier, he has dressed up as and explicitly been compared to Sherlock Holmes, who is one of the most well-known examples of an allistic person accidentally writing an autistic character.

Now, I am very well aware that Thomas probably didn’t intend this. It’s a common trope, after all - the emotionally stunted nerd genius - and not many allistic people realize that it’s actually a (somewhat distorted) portrayal of autism.

However, I think it is extremely important that he is made aware of this as soon as possible, as examples of this “trope” often tend to fall victim to different kinds of mockery - being called inhuman, having their special interests mocked, being referred to as cold-hearted machines… A well known example of this is Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory - he is obviously autistic, but the creators keep mocking him and encouraging their viewers to mock him for exhibiting autistic behaviours.

I don’t want Logan to become a Sheldon. I don’t want the Sanders Sides to become a Big Bang Theory. I am terrified of this happening, even though I know that Thomas is a good person, because if he doesn’t know what he’s doing then how do we know he won’t accidentally end up making autistic people the butt of a joke? We’ve already seen slight examples of this, for example in the most recent video not only Anxiety but also Thomas himself essentially mocked Logan for taking things too literally, and that stung. So please. I beg of you. Reblog this. @ Thomas in this. Send him asks about this.

Don’t let Logan become a Sheldon.

My sophomore English teacher was the worst! We’ll call her Ms. V.
I was literally always failing Ms. V’s class because I “didn’t turn in my papers”. I would have to go through all the other classes papers to find them like weekly. Very illegal. Then stand there watch her grade and put it on the online grade book and have my mom screen shot it at home and save it on her computer so she couldn’t remove it later. She hated me and I have no reason why. Apparently she always chose a kid every year to do that to according to upperclassmen. Her biggest mistake was telling me no one ever made an A in her class. Left that class with a 98.

Most memorable after that with Ms. V was her vs my Doe-Eyed friend. So Doe-Eyes had a bladder infection the second half of the school year, poor girl, and was allowed to go to the bathroom whenever. Ms. V never checked her email so she had no clue. When Doe-Eye asked to go to the bathroom Ms
V was like “You know you’re not allowed to go to the bathroom in my class”. Doe-Eye embarrassingly explained why she couldn’t hold it but Ms. V told her no did Doe-Eye was like well I’m going anyways. Everything was frozen for like 3 seconds after Doe-Eye left, suddenly it came alive and Ms. V threw her pencil across the room, it hit like three people, before chasing Doe-Eye down the hall. After that it was anarchy in the classroom. Ms. V was never able to gain ball control of us entirely. We were so terrible to her after that she cried like 4 times over the course of the rest of the year. I don’t know how she didn’t get fired because she always had complaints from parents about what their children where telling them happened in that class.

2

Hello guys! I’ve been getting a lot of requests to do studying tips so here it is! I am by no means an expert but as a student, I wrote this based on what I’ve learnt as I struggled and pulled myself through my school life!

 KNOW YOUR STRENGTH & WEAKNESSES

As a student, I personally feel that it’s most important to know where your forte lies. By identifying your weakness you would know the subjects that you should tackle rather than focusing on the thing you’re already familiar with. You should spend more time on your weaker areas compared to your strong one, however do not get complacent!!!

 TIME MANAGEMNET

Studying for exams are always a race against time, thus mapping out the things you should do is always important. I don’t have a strict time schedule where I allocate certain timing for my subjects; however, I do time myself when I do papers. For example, when I was doing math papers as revision for o levels, the duration given for one Emath paper was 2 hours. Thus, when I practiced and did my papers, I would only give myself 1 and half hours. This will train me to do my papers faster with maximum accuracy. You’re also required to have a good grasp of your subject to be able to complete questions faster.

SLEEP & EAT WELL

Somehow during exam periods, a lot of my friends start sacrificing their sleep and food to study. And I can’t emphasize enough how wrong this is. Most of my friends, who do this, end up making more careless mistakes in their paper and thus winding up with lower marks. Lack of sleep is a serious flaw and can jeopardize you paper immensely. If you’re tired, rest; don’t try to push yourself because your brain won’t be able to absorb the information any longer. It’s the same situation with the food, if you sacrifice your meals, you may end up getting gastric that may just affect your performance during the paper.

MAKE NOTES

Well duh right? Everyone makes notes, but more importantly, you need to make notes that you would want to read. As much as the process of writing and remembering is important, if you like the way you notes look, you’ll feel more inclined to read it. Thus, this is partially why I enjoy making notes that look pretty to me.

 TAKE BREAKS

Never ever forget to take breaks. I’d recommend a 15minutes break every 2 hours. Pushing yourself to sit there continuously will only cause you to lose focus, causing you to become restless. Different people have different attention span, thus never ever compare yourself to your friends and force yourself to sit down and study as long they do. Find out what works for you and what doesn’t.

 LISTENING TO MUSIC

I looooove music. But I have to admit, listening to music while I’m trying to memorize some lit quotes, isn’t working out for me. Thus, I don’t recommend listening to music as you’re trying to absorb content heavy subjects. However, if its question based subjects like math, by all means. Check out my studying playlist!

 KNOW YOURSELF

You need to know what method helps you work best. Writing? Auditory? Everyone has a different style of learning that works best for him or her. Some people need to read their content out loud for themselves to hear before they can memorize, however this does not work for everyone. Maybe you’re the type that needs to draw diagrams to colour code your notes. Whichever the case is, its best to know yourself, and the style of learning that best suits you.

 STRESS MANAGEMENT

Stress isn’t necessarily bad. A little bit of stress can get you off your lay bum and to start doing some work. However, being overly stressed will just backfire and may cause anxiety problems. This is why it’s essential to keep a healthy balance of work and play. Don’t overwork yourself and drive yourself into a corner, this isn’t healthy for you or your studies. Taking conscious effort to distress can help keep a pleasant attitude and mind that’s good for learning.

DELETE DISTRACTIONS

If you find yourself being constantly distracted by your phone or a particular app, delete it. Lock your phone in the drawer or temporarily delete your social media apps. Downloading focus aps can help you too. Apps like helps block access to some websites can restrain you from falling back into the trap that is distractions.

DESIRE TO SUCCEED

It is important that you’re doing all this for yourself. Not your parent. Not anyone else, but you. If you lack the desire to get good grades and do well, it’ll definitely be tough finding the motivation to do anything. You don’t have to like studying, but you at least have to want getting good grades. If you desire to have straight As, you’ll naturally fell more inclined to do something to help you get it. However, its also important to set realistic goals. It’s impossible for you to jump from a F9 to A1 in a month. Set practical goals and take baby steps to get there.

 PROCRASTINATION

Well, procrastination can be a bitch. I started my studyblr account during my o level periods because seeing other people’s notes made me want to study. You should find a way to help YOU counter your procrastination tendencies.

All in all, studying is something very unique and personalized. What works for me may not work for you, but if you keep working hard. No goal is ever too far. Thank you for reading!

THE BEST ESSAY ADVICE YOU WILL EVER GET

Yo peeps, so as you can probably tell, I’m about to blow your mind. You might want to sit down, grab some water, you know, keep yourself hydrated. Maybe do a few stretches.

Now that you’re all ready, let’s begin! A girl who wrote about hotdogs and Costco got into Stanford and most Ivy League Schools, a student who wrote about his love for food got into Stanford, while Cornell’s admissions officer’s favorite essays were about lint and failing the driver’s test four times. Observing a pattern here? All these people chose kind of silly topics to write about. You might be wondering, “Yo,why would I want to sound stupid in front of the admissions officer, this doesn’t make sense!” . Well, that’s a valid argument. Now read this excerpt from one of the essays I mentioned above.

“While enjoying an obligatory hot dog, I did not find myself thinking about the ‘all beef’ goodness that Costco boasted. I instead considered finitudes and infinitudes, unimagined uses for tubs of sour cream, the projectile motion of said tub when launched from an eighty foot shelf or maybe when pushed from a speedy cart by a scrawny seventeen year old. I contemplated the philosophical: If there exists a thirty-three ounce jar of Nutella, do we really have free will? I experienced a harsh physics lesson while observing a shopper who had no evident familiarity of inertia’s workings. With a cart filled to overflowing, she made her way towards the sloped exit, continuing to push and push while steadily losing control until the cart escaped her and went crashing into a concrete column, 52” plasma screen TV and all. Purchasing the yuletide hickory smoked ham inevitably led to a conversation between my father and me about Andrew Jackson’s controversiality"

Yes, yes, she’s literally talking about hot dogs and Costco. Now don’t underestimate her, this girl got accepted to 5 Ivy League Schools and Stanford. Jeez, that’s impressive. So now, you might be thinking , “Okay, enough of this, just get to the juicy part, give us the magic potion!” . Luckily enough for you, I’m getting to the point.

If you want to write an essay that slays everyone else’s like Beyoncé, first you gotta be true to yourself. You’re 17 or 18, you don’t want to end poverty or save the world. Maybe you enjoy pepperoni pizza, maybe you love watching horror films, maybe you love shopping at Macy’s, whatever it is, write about it.

The key is to choose a seemingly silly topic and present it in an intellectual light. Your ability to turn something silly into something genius will impress them and make you more memorable. In order to do that, you need to have a lot of knowledge about the topic you chose, which is why you need to be true to yourself. But then again, don’t write a pointless essay, don’t tell the officers that you can stuff 20 cheese balls in your mouth. Although I think it’s impressive, the admissions officer will beg to differ.

So there’s the secret formula to write a winning essay. Best of luck and I hope you get into your dream school!

Nurseydex & Acting Class

Eyoooooooooooooooo, the CP Resident Shakespeare Ho/Theater Major is back with more shamelessly using these characters as a means to talk about my major Nurseydex Antics!

As anyone who follows me knows by now, I’m a theater major. Dex and Nursey are comedy gold, and the thought of them working with any of the texts I’ve worked with is just DELIGHTFUL.

(Click here and here for my other Shakespeare Ho/theater major posts)

So without further ado!

  • Dex needs and art credit. Just one more fucking art credit. But his schedule is insane and there’s only one he can take this semester
  • it’s an acting class
  • He doesn’t want to do it. Mostly because his boyfriend will be I N S U F F E R A B L E
  • But he just wants to get this over with so he registers and just waits for Nursey to find out
  • Nursey is delighted. And registers for that class, too.
  • “YOU DON’T NEED ANOTHER ART CREDIT, DEREK!” “Dude, you really think I’m gonna miss this?”
  • Dex doesn’t really know what to expect going in, but he definitely wasn’t expecting the prof (let’s call him Casey) to be this hot middle aged guy who dresses like Indiana Jones and lives in a cabin and recites Shakespeare to trees
  • (we’re talking Adventure Indy, not Professor Indy)
  • (what no I’m not basing him on my prof Kerry who is also currently directing me in Julius Caesar why would you think that)
  • Nursey and Casey hit it off because Casey is this great mix of Passionate and IDGAF and Nursey wants to be him when he grows up
  • Dex’s main reaction to him is “?????????” until he starts talking about his cabin in the woods and then they bond over Practical Shit like fixing window panes and Nature
  • (the rest under the cut because this always happens my posts are always long af)

(This isn’t saying anything new, it’s just taking another angle on a commonly discussed topic in case some people find this angle easier to relate to or engage with).

Most people can tell the difference between communities where they matter and communities where they don’t. It’s often really hard to nail down, specifically, the set of differences between these communities, but that doesn’t mean you don’t get a feel for it. There are places where people see you and people like you as a peer, a partner, a friend, and there are places where they see you as an imposition they tolerate for the sake of politeness, or a potential threat, or a waste of time and energy.

So lots of people go into a community and they get a visceral sense of ‘wow, this is a place where people like me aren’t welcome.’ And it’d be nice if they could pin it down beyond that - say 'this is an interaction I had which sucked’ or 'these are the rules that exclude me’ or 'this was the thing which made it clear to me that people like me were unwelcome’ - but often you can’t pin it down that precisely. You know perfectly well what you experienced, but all of the evidence that got you there is nothing all by itself, or is almost completely intangible. Sometimes communities have an explicit rule that everyone is welcome, and if you say “I’m unwelcome” they will point at the rule and say “no you’re not”. But you are.

I know a lot of people who are confused or stressed by the discourse surrounding microaggressions. They read through lists of them and see a mix of some things that are obvious misconduct and some things that look harmless, that they do all the time with people of every background, that don’t seem horrible at all. So they dutifully memorize every list they run across and anxiously try to avoid it in future, even though they don’t have any idea why it’s bad, or else they unhelpfully argue with people about how it isn’t that bad.

But I think the actual thing with microaggressions is that feeling of 'people like me are not welcome’ or at least 'people like me are only conditionally welcome, welcome if we’re friendly and careful and unthreatening and reassuring and match other peoples’ narratives about us and aren’t angry and don’t make anyone uncomfortable and toe the party line’. It’s really helpful for people to collect and corroborate and discuss and complain about all of the little cues which add up to that impression, but scrupulously memorizing the list of cues and avoiding the things on your list won’t actually make spaces where people feel welcome. The problem is the 'this space is not for people like you’ thing.

I think this is also what’s going on with a lot of discussion of bad allies. Lots of bad allying seems to amount to 'loudly saying that people are valued while continuing to be the kind of space where they are palpably not valued’.

Which, of course, isn’t worse than being a space where people are not valued while not even giving lip service to the idea that they should be, but it can be uniquely frustrating because in a space that says 'we hate gay people’ you can say 'I am uncomfortable there because they hate me’ while in a space that claims to be supportive and fails at it all you can really say is 'uh. it sucks, for some reason’. Or you can give reasons that seem trivial and insignificant and which, if they were fixed, wouldn’t actually be sufficient.

Jsuki; DIABOLIK LOVERS “5th Anniversary” Book - Yuma’s Special Interview

── Right now, what are you into?
Yuma:
A scoop, that my hands gotten familiar with. When it comes to taking care of my vegetation, if I can’t get used to the tools, I get irritated after all. The (scoop) I’m using now is really great, and isn’t spoiled or anything. I’m into it.

── What in your fashion are you particular about lately?

Yuma:
I don’t have anything I’m particular about… stuff that’s easy to move about in is the best after all. Also, stuff that isn’t hard to breathe in. For clothes that have buttons, I won’t button all the way up. I’m big-sized, so finding clothes for me is the hardest thing.

── What habits do you have that you’ll do without realising?
Yuma:
Ah… Ruki told me to stop this. I tend to chew on my thumb. I sort of realise it, but I can’t seem to correct this habit…

── How do you spend your off-days?

Yuma: I take care of my vegetables, and as I’m doing it, my off-day just ends at once. Even if I do go out, it’s just to go out and buy fertilizer or something. If it rains, I’m fine not working and just staying inside the house.

── What do you wear to sleep?
Yuma:
Previously, I was going to sleep without wearing anything above, then Kou said something like, “I knew it”, and stopped me. So recently, I’ll simply throw on a T-shirt or jersey. Well, if it’s just to sleep in, anything goes.

── What do you definitely do before sleeping?
Yuma:
I don’t have anything I definitely do. I go with the day. Usually, I’ll bathe, then brush my teeth… ah, but once I wake up, I’ll water the plants in my room. But they don’t really need that much water, so it’s just a bit.

── What is one part of your body that you like best?
Yuma: My arm. I have the most arm strength among us brothers, and if it comes to fights, I won’t lose. I usually also play the role of being the one to lift all the heavy stuff. Isn’t it great that my body’s okay no matter what I do?

── What’s something you like in your room?

Yuma:
Right by the side of my bed are some viewing plants. To be able to wake up and see green, it makes my mood good. Also, when I’m in my room, I usually just roll around on my bed, so I’m able to see my (plants) regularly.

── Tell us one memorable impression that you have of your brothers.

Yuma:
Ah? Right… last time, I don’t know what happened to Azusa or what he did, but he wouldn’t stop crying. In the end, I stuffed one of my sugar-chans into his mouth, and he was so surprised he smiled. Except, I can’t remember why I decided to do that at all.

── What do you think of Karlheinz?
Yuma:
I respect him, and remember him as somebody amazing. To pick up someone like me and to give me a new life to walk upon. I’m not smart and I can’t do complicated things…but, as long as he wishes for it, I’ll do anything.

── Where will you go if going on a date?

Yuma:
Mm… the botanic gardens will be nice. I don’t really grow that many flowers, so I can learn things there too. And when time passes, the atmosphere will change, won’t it? It’s good for a date.

── What does a girl do that makes your heart skip a beat?
Yuma:
When she passes by and waves her hand. Somehow, if she’s (giving small waves), I think it’s cute. I don’t know about the others guys, but like this? When she looks up? When I see her do that innocently while waving her hand, somehow it makes me excited.

── How does her blood taste?

Yuma:
It’s super delicious. Like this; hot and sweet, with a deep after-taste. The taste may change, but that’s good in itself. If I pop a sugar-chan in after, I wonder how it’ll taste? Hehe…

── Which part do you like to suck from best?

Yuma:
From the waist, how do I say this, then up the back… I’ll like something like that. When you suck like that, it’s interesting to be able to see her tremble. Sometimes when it spills and you lick it up, she also gives a good reaction.

── What is her existence to you?
Yuma:
What is it… so you wanna hear it again huh? Ah…in any way, so long she’s by my side smiling, I’m somehow relived. I used to think everything is troublesome with her last time, but now if she’s not nearby, I can’t take it. To think I’ll think of it like this now, even I feel it’s weird but… since it’s become like this, I’ll keep her beside me and protect her properly.
