Thus saith the Lord

Today’s reading comes from the book of Netviticus:

And the Lord spoke, with a mighty voice, and thus did he say:

“And lo: I give to thee a Kingdom of infinite magnitude and wealth, and that Kingdom shall be named The Internet.  And in The Internet shalt thou find great treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and seek thee out that knowledge, that thou mayest be as fit caretaker for this, my Kingdom.

"Seek thee out also thy kin, for into this, my Kingdom, have I placed safe havens for those whom Earth hath torn asunder.  For so it shall be that in The Internet, all people are kin, and they shall find their kin and make great and joyful noise, and shall tell stories of the prophets Sherlock and The Doctor, of Carol Danvers and Tatiana Maslany and of all the great hosts, and there shall be much rejoicing.

"But tread thee lightly, and with care, for great is The Internet, and terrible also, as I am a great and terrible God.  And war shall come unto The Internet, and the Ten Plagues shall ravage this, my Kingdom, and these shall be the plagues:

  1. Ignorance
  2. Judgement
  3. Anger
  4. Foul speech
  5. Bigotry
  6. Privilege
  7. Trolls
  8. Flame
  9. Bullying
  10. Poor spelling and grammar

"But go thou forth, and be thou not afraid: for I am with thee.  Carry these, my Commandments, and speak them with great voice, that all who dwell in The Internet may hear.  And so it shall be, that if these, my people, do hear and obey, and that they do so with joyous heart and kind countenance, that the Kingdom of The Internet shall be as the Kingdom of Heaven.  And these shall be my Commandments:

"Thou shalt seek knowledge, and thou shalt share thy knowledge with thy kin, and with the kin of thy kin.

"Thou shalt welcome to thy kin the lonely, the lost, the needful and the afraid, and thou shalt teach them the ways of thy kin with patience and good faith.  For though their wisdom be little and their fanfiction be as the work of a child, they are thy kin, and thou shalt love them as a sibling.

"Thou shalt not seek war with another’s kin, nor bring hatred nor curses into their homes.  For they are to their kin as you are to yours; they love as you do, and shall be your equal in all things.

"Thou shalt not pass judgement on the ignorant, nor bring them low with laughter.  For were you not once as ignorant as a n00b - did you not crawl as a n00b crawls, and cry as a n00b cries?  Give them instead thy hand and give them welcome, and share with them thy knowledge, that they may be to you as kin.

"Thou shalt not curse, nor use foul speech to thy kin or another’s kin, unless such speech be known as jest.  For verily mayest thou curse at foul things: but these, my people, are not foul.

"Thou shalt not be as trolls, or as other foul things: thou shalt speak as though a light shone down upon thy face, and all thy kin and the kin of thy kin did hear thee and know thy name.

"Thou shalt know thy seat in the Kingdom of Earth, and thou shalt carry that seat with thee in the Kingdom of The Internet, and sit upon it.  And the highest of seats shall have discourse with the lowest, and the lowest shall share wisdom with the highest, and thus shall all be equal in the Kingdom of The Internet.

"Thou shalt use kind words, and thou shalt invite kind words, and thou shalt have discourse with thy kin though they may not think as you do, nor speak as you do.  For though it be that all these, my people, are as equals, they are not the same.

"Thou shalt not seek to harm another, nor by inaction watch another come to harm.  Be thou a shield for the weak, and be thou a threshold, that by you they may enter the Kingdom of the Internet.

"And so it was, and so it shall be: that by these, my Commandments, shall peace be upon the Kingdom of The Internet.”

And lo, it was: that the Kingdom of the Internet was great and mighty, and the people of the Lord did quarrel and fight.  But unto their dischord was brought the voice of the Lord, and by His Commandments did the Kingdom of The Internet find peace: and so it was good.

Here endeth the lesson.

(Note: I have no idea who the God of the internet is, but I’m open to suggestions!)

Bummed out teacher here. I just need someone to tell me that I'm powerless. That I can't fix everything. That I can't stop my students from getting involved in things like drugs or alcohol when they're not in the school building. That I can't worry about all of them all the time because I'm only one person and can't possibly have the strength to worry this much so often. That I'm only one person. I know this intellectually...but I just need to hear it from someone else.

If you are doing your best, then that’s all you can do. You cannot control everything. You can only control what you do in your classroom, and if you know that what you’re doing is good, that has to be enough. Sometimes it isn’t enough, but we can’t blame ourselves. You are not a superhero and it’s OKAY. (I have a lot of other thoughts about the “Teacher as Superhero” trope but I’ll put them in the tags to make this more pep-talky and less whiny.)

y'all are over here getting so discouraged over SDCC and Eliza but I’m still like “lol idc” bc I still don’t, and I never have, and I will continue to not care about cast opinions on ships lmao

I will never understand why people get such a kick out of mocking people for the things that make them happy
