why are the designs so pretty

I like to imagine aliens that have no concept of creative expression. Aliens that design technology only for efficiency and ease of life. Them having books and movies only to convey information. Imagine how baffled they be by humans. They’d be like “what are art museums? You just go to a building and look at pictures?” “Yeah they’re pretty!” “What do they mean?” “Art means different things to different people. It depends on the person!” And they’re just so confused. Or “why are there… why does this cellular phone, as you call it, come in multiple colors?” “Because people like different colors” “but…. why? Does the rose gold phone have a different purpose?” “No they’re all the same, just different colors” “but??????” Or my personal favorite: humans trying to explain the concept of a person having a favorite color. “Why do humans have favorite colors? Do different wavelengths of light mean different things to different people?” “No they just look pretty. I like green. Green is a pretty color.” “But why??????” “Just because.” And they’re just so perplexed and frustrated

Because who doesn’t love drawing Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a Disney princess? ;)

Also because Belle’s updated ballgown for the live-action film is pretty enough, but also…baffling. I understand that it’s supposed to make Belle “look like a modern woman” which feels like producer code for “make it marketable because we don’t trust 5-17 year-old-girls to appreciate the style of anything more than 5 years old herp derp der” but anachronistic style aside, it barely draws inspiration from the original dress, and perhaps more importantly, it doesn’t mesh with the rest of the film’s costume design. I’m loathe to place too much blame on the costume designer because the other costumes in the movie are pretty great, a fun stylistic storybook-take on 18th-century garb–ain’t nuttin wrong with that! But whether the designer made some odd choices on their own or these issues are the product of executive meddling, I feel like Belle got shortchanged in almost all of her dresses; surely there are more coherent and consistent ways to set her apart from the crowd without making her stick out like a sore 21st-century-prom-dress thumb. Not to mention that kids LOVE elaborate poofy princess dresses–why take that away from them? So here’s a poofy sparkly damn Belle gown for those of us who missed it!

(”But MBB,” you may say; “Your dress is no better! Its lack of sleeves is an egregious anachronism for the rococo period and her bare arms offend mine sensibilities!” To which I say “GUESS WHAT TURDBAGS IT COMES WITH SLEEVES TOO”)

Got a question about an animated movie! In Atlantis 2: milos return, the animation looks fine but there's something not right with it. My brother says its cause there's no shading and shadow, what do you think?

It’s quite simple; the animation is much much cheaper. ATLE had a budget of ca $120,000,000 while the sequel had nothing near those numbers since that “movie” is simply 3 episodes of a cancelled TV-series, poorly patched together. This financial factor alone is the main reason why the second movie looks so different since budget cuts lead to a huge downgrade in quality.

For one thing; veteran animators were replaced with people with less experience/talent. Even if the character designs are pretty close, you can still tell that the characters in the sequel were not drawn by the same people as in the original.

Another crucial element is the the smaller amount of fully animated frames per second. Look at Kida in the GIFs below. In the first one she’s just standing there looking at Milo’s book, but she is constantly moving. Breathing, eyes darting from side to side, head tilting and other subtle animation brings her to life. Even in the scenes where people are sleeping they are still moving.

Compare this Kida to the other one; stiff as a board, just mouth flapping, a random head tilt at the end, and nothing more. This is pretty much the standard throughout the sequel. You see this a lot in TV-shows where the characters are just frozen in time, with the occasional movement (usually mouth-flapping or blinking) because it’s simply much cheaper to do it like this.

PS: Kida’s hair having brown line art rather than light grey also makes the animation look more “ugh”

If anybody else has more to add, go for it! ;D

so I guess this is my design for Henry??  lots of folks were making them, so why not, right?  I kinda had a more tired, droll-humored Martin Freeman in mind while drawing him hahaha

Considering how he just kinda RIPPED those ropes apart and has been hacking and slashing his way though the studio with an axe, I figure Henry’s older but has aged pretty well and still has a bit of muscle on him.  Maybe he served in the war; who knows!

(drawn in MSPaint because that’s all I have on hand at the moment)

I’m not sure if I’m gonna consistently draw him like this in the future; we’ll see!

So yeah, some phantom thief concept design sketches I found the other day. Includes Makoto, Hifumi, and what I assume are Mishima and Ryuji respectively. If it is Mishima (which in pretty sure it is, based on the face and body type), 1) I’m bitter af he didn’t make the final party cut, and 2) that definitely explains why he and Hifumi have the most broken confidant abilities in the game.

“I’ll protect you… no matter what”

So there’s a a bit of a stereotype about older lesbians loving the shit out of Xena: Warrior Princess. Like most of the older lesbians I know joke about it and an obsession with Xena is a surprisingly accurate litmus test for knowing if someone is gay.

And I never really got it. Like yeah, Lucy Lawless is smoking. But I didn’t really understand why it was so deeply ingrained in lesbian culture.

But today I saw Wonder Woman, and for the first time in my life I know without a doubt why so many women loved Xena.

All the women in Wonder Woman are gorgeous. They’re breathtakingly beautiful, almost too resplendent to even gaze upon. And their armor is everything I’ve ever dreamed of. It’s actually useful, it doesn’t have stupid design choices, and it’s insanely pretty. Like, I honestly can’t stress enough how fucking gorgeous all of these ladies are. My jaw hit the floor and stayed there.

But they aren’t just gorgeous, they’re strong. They’re powerful and courageous. They defy the norms and blaze their own trail. They’re dangerous, independent, and capable.

I saw before me women that were everything I’ve ever wanted to be. Femininity in all its perfection and splendor. Beauty and power, grace and danger. The gifts of both life and death abundantly present in their forms.

And I was simultaneously inspired and captivated. I adored them. I wanted to be them. I wanted to befriend them. I wanted to love them. They were everything.

And suddenly I understood what Xena must have been like for those older women. To see such a beautiful example of womanhood in a story that defies societal expectation, it’s life changing. And I sincerely hope that we can see more stories like this come to be.

I like how your drawings of the boys have different things that make them unique. like kook's eyes and jimin's wing thingys. can you tell us all the detail for the boys :0

LETS TALK ABOUT CHARA DESIGN HECK YES

  •  I guess Jungkook’s design is pretty easy to get ahah. Irl he has really big eyes and bunny teeth so it wasn’t difficult for me to come up with! Then for the sparkles: I really wanted to accentuate this “innocent” or “clueless” vibe. His eyes are expressive, you can really see his passion in his eyes when he sings! Not saying that the others aren’t passionate, it’s just that his eyes are so expressive like he doesn’t even need to speak, you can directly see what’s going on (in my opinion ofc). So I just thought that sparkles would be a great representation of that! Also Jungkook isn’t 100% innocent, he loooves to tease his big bros. I know that I didn’t really have the chance to show this side of Jungkook, but since he’s such a tease, the gap between this and his BIG SPARKLY EYES is funny :^DD. At first he only had two “white bubbles” in his eyes, but then I said fuck it and added an entire galaxy. ALSO THE NOSE YES, I removed the nose. I want people to concentrate on his eyes, so I thought that the nose took too much place and was kinda useless? for his design. Actually a lot of people don’t even notice that he doesn’t have a nose ahah. And I think he looks so funny with his mouth on the nose area.
  • Tae’s design was also easy for me to come up with! He has amaaaaazing eyes, big and elongate, and ofc THE LASHES DAMN. Also he is really playful and that’s what I wanted to accentuate. So I mixed these ideas and bam I created his eyes. I really like it because it looks like he has something in mind like “ha ha ha :^DDD how am i gonna tease ma bros”. ALSO his iris aren’t round, it’s like two straight lines. I think it goes well with the playful side and the “blank tae” side lol. I also draw his amazing brows and his squared smile, he’s so cute ;;;
  • JIMIN. There’s two Jimin: normal sized and smol. For the normal sized Jimin I just try to replicate his natural eye shape, he kinda has puppy eyes! So nothing big. Of course the lil wings because he’s really sweet and just an angel in general. NOW THE MOST INTERRESTING PART: smol Jimin. Because some people always tell me “WHY DO U DRAW JIMIN SMOL, HES NOT THAT SMOL PLUS YOONGI IS ALSO SMOL, 0/100″, listen I’ll explain. The thing with Jimin is that he’s really cute but at the same time he really wants to give this “manly” vibe if you know what I mean. You know the “IM DA MAN IN DIS HOUSE”. So I just thought “ok, there’s cute Jimin, and manly Jimin but still cute, ok let’s create two Jimin”. Smol Jimin always wants to fite everyone and he’s fierce (like in my “not today what really happened”). That’s why I draw smol Jimin: because it’s funny af. Jimin likes to appear manly, but the fact that he is 30 cm in my comics makes everything pretty funny. This is the reason why I don’t often draw smol Yoongi, because he doesn’t give a fuck.
  • Namnam ayyy!!! I recently changed his design so it’s a great occasion to talk about it! This man is S O F T, 100 % soft. He’s just cute ok, like look at his smile, I’m sure he’s sad when he walks on flowers. So I wanted him so have big iris (kinda) and also squared ish eyes. Because with this I can do two different things: softysoft Namnam and istg i’m done with everyone Namnam (like  in the last panel of the BS&T jpn ver comic), very easy to make :^DD And I added a white bubble inside because cute ok. He’s cute fite me. And finaly the flower on his head. He loves nature so so much so I just thought “why not adding a flower”. And ofc I never forget the dimples.
  • Hoseok’s turn :^DDD!! I just wanted him to be a sun ok, so that’s why I did. He has sunlight all around him, he’s like a walking sun. His eyes always look like he’s smiling even when he’s not. I also add a slight aegyo sal. THE NOOSE. So Hoseok is the only one with a different nose (i mean Jungkook doesn’t have one so it doesnt count). It’s simply because I personally think that he has an interresting nose shape and I just wanted to draw that! His mouth is basically a heart when he’s smiling and sometimes I add the dimples (i love dimples).
  • I talked about Gigi’s design here!
  • FINALLY SEOKJIN. I just l o v e his design. I love to draw him so much. Irl his eyes are really big and he kinda has cat eyes so I just drew that. His eyes are pretty round but yeah not like Jungkook. I like this eye shape because it makes him look sometimes playful and sometimes sassy depending on what I want to draw! Also he has two lashes because he’s pretty. And, the, sparkles. He’s just pretty so he needs his sparkles around him that’s all :^DDD

DONE holy shit it was long to write, I can talk about this forever I’m not even joking

some Jack headcanons:
  • he’s afraid of ghosts/supernatural stuff, especially after the haunted house incident. if he hears a ghost story he won’t be able to sleep that night
  • more than half the time he really doesn’t understand all the futuristic lingo and slang, but makes 0 effort to figure it out. he’ll just nod and smile, pretending to understand
  • he tried coffee once but it made him shake way too much and he thought it was overly bitter. he doesn’t understand why people drink it
  • he can’t eat chicken after becoming one. he also gets a bit unsettled when he sees others eat it
  • he hardly ever gets sick, but if he does it’s pretty bad and he’s incapacitated for a bit
  • bugs give him the creeps, if a bug crawls on his hand he’ll lose it
  • he loves hello kitty, which is somehow still around so far in the future. the design is super cute to him and thinks it’s great that it’s practically everywhere

One thing I don’t get about adult animated shows is why the character art is usually more ‘ugly.’ You usually have round, buggy eyes, pill shaped heads, more rectangular profiles, simple line weight, etc.

It’s been true of the Simpsons, Family Guy, Bojack Horseman, Futurama, Rick and Morty, etc. Honestly the only one that adamantly stands apart from this IMO is South Park.

The art quality has no bearing on the quality of the show itself–I’ve heard nothing but good things about Horseman and I know Rick and Morty is pretty good.

And some of those shows do have good art at times. R&M’s alien designs and background work is incredible.

It’s animated in Toon Boom, so in that case I know they likely have a simplified style to make it easier to rig and draw, but it’s also possible to do more detailed models in Toon Boom still with the same functionality and flexibility. I feel like simplicity and ease isn’t the reason for the way characters are modeled.

I want to know if there’s a more intentional reason the characters look the way they do in these shows. What’s the specific appeal in this particular art style that’s become so prevalent, and why is it mostly seen in adult animation?

Do ppl not realize that Feyre escaping an abusive home and going on to become the first High Lady is about dismantling toxic patriarchal societies? Bc ppl criticize Maas for making fae masculinity so toxic and I’m like #look at rhys #look at how he’s been raped and treated by men and women alike #dont u understand that these books are about combatting toxic masculinity. Don’t you understand that that’s why the heroine escapes the evil toxic man and forms friendships w males and females who allow her the space to grow and find her own power? Like Rhys and Feyre and Mor and Cass and Azriel and Lucien are all CHARACTERS WHO HAVE BEEN HURT BY TOXIC MASCULINITY. so…um Feyre and Rhys actively working to get rid of these power structures is um really good? And the inner circle is clearly meant to demonstrate that toxic masculinity is not the only way fae society can function? Clearly the inner circle is designed to show how men and women can work together in power? I mean that’s literally the point. And to make that point Sarah set the books in a world w extreme patriarchy. But um. That world is a pretty accurate representation of you know…our world and that uh thing where America elected a rapist. So I’m uh confused as to why people criticize her books for containing toxic masculinity. Uh. The books are all about combatting it? But to combat it you have to you know…have some of it in there.
And do ppl not see that these books are basically just about a woman navigating the patriarchal society she’s been thrust into and actually starting to change it? I mean do ppl seriously think that Maas is condoning toxic masculinity? Even though the whole point is that Feyre is equal to Rhys, and that Amren and Mor are second and third?
I JUST. DONT UNDERSTAND. How can some of you be such, idk, bad readers. To have missed this.
