Medical School—A Not-So-Quick Walkthrough

Hey humans! Aunt Scripty here. This post is a submission by Brittany, whose Tumblr handle I surprisingly don’t know. This post came through the Submissions Box. If you’re interested, I encourage people to submit articles to appear on the blog! [though it may behoove us both if you message me first, as I have a few posts in-progress and I don’t want us to duplicate efforts]

Anyway, give Brittany some props! This is an awesome post, and I’m CRAZY thankful she wrote in! And now, Brittany, take it away!

Disclaimer: This applies to the American medical system only, and may be biased by the author’s experiences.  Also note that this is the process for becoming an MD, not a DO (both MDs and DOs are fully licensed physicians, but DOs have a stronger focus on the musculoskeletal system and their schooling is slightly different).

Disclaimer Part 2: I swear, this was SUPPOSED to be a brief post.  Oops.

The quick and dirty:

—4 years of undergrad

—4 years of medical school, 2 in the classroom and 2 clinical

—3-5 years of residency depending on what they specialize in.  Can be longer if they add subspecialties or fellowships.

The in-depth description:

Getting in (Premed student)

Acceptance to medical school is hard enough to start with.  There’s an estimate that 75% of applicants are qualified, but only 50% get in.  Your character doesn’t need to major in biology or pre-med, but there are pre-requisites: two semesters each of biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, calculus, and physics, plus a couple biology electives, and I think psych and statistics have been added on since I graduated, but don’t quote me on that.  That’s pretty much 2/3 of a science major right there, so you can see why a lot of people just end up with that.  During spring of junior year, they’ll take a giant standardized test called the MCAT that covers all of those topics and is notoriously difficult.

Along with the classroom work, they’ll have to get clinical experience—most commonly volunteering, shadowing, or working as a medical scribe, but you can get creative—and usually do a little research of some kind.  Med school is hard and being a doctor is harder; they want to know that you’ve got an idea of what you’re getting into.  If your character does all that right, they interview with medical schools during the fall of senior year, and hopefully get accepted!

Year 1 (MS1)

Your first year is classroom based.  You get daily lectures on very complicated medical topics, with relatively little patient interaction this year.  Schools will include more practical classes as well, including a cadaver dissection, pathology (where you train to look at cells and understand what a healthy vs. diseased one looks like; some schools are old school and have people still work with slides and microscopes, others like mine do it virtually), and standardized patient encounters (where they hire actors to come in and work with us so we can practice histories and physical exams and basically get a baseline on things like “what does a normal lung sounds like?”).

Patient interaction varies from school to school, but generally is pretty low.  You can shadow a certain specialty you’re interested in, volunteer in free clinics, join different clubs/interest groups, or do various electives that will focus on teaching certain aspects of patient care (nutrition, medical Spanish, global health, etc.), but you have to go look for them.  If I hadn’t done any of that, I would have seen maybe… two patients a month?  Most students will branch out with those other opportunities, though.

Year 2 (MS2)

Similar to MS1 in that you’re still on classroom duty, still not seeing many patients.  Typically you learn more sensitive physical exams this year (urological, gynecologic, breast, etc.), and you’re finished with the cadaver dissection, but things are otherwise the same.  At the end of your character’s MS2 year, they’ll take their first board exam, called STEP 1.  You can take it one time only unless you fail.  Low scores or a fail are really frowned on, and can limit the specialty your character goes into, so you can imagine the pressure.

Year 3 (MS3)

Yay!  Your character’s now ready to be let loose on the clinic/hospital!

Boo!  This year kicks. your. ass.

This year is all about making your character feel like an idiot putting what your character’s been studying for two years into action.  The schedule is broken up into rotations, which are periods of 4-8 weeks where students focus on a specific specialty each time.  These courses are: pediatrics, family medicine, psychiatry, ob/gyn, neurology (usually), emergency (sometimes), surgery, and internal medicine.  Difficulty varies by rotation, with surgery and ob/gyn being the worst (12 hour days with only one day off a week, max; surgery adds in occasional 24 hour shifts too, just to spice things up).  Occasionally you’ll land on a nice one, like psychiatry, with 10 hour days and free weekends.

On a more day-to-day level, third years are usually part of a small medical team that cares for a set of patients.  The team consists of an attending (fully licensed physician), residents (physicians who are training in their particular specialty), and medical students (MS3s and MS4s both).  MS3s will usually get a small subset of hospital patients they care for every day—take their histories, do their physical exams, list what you think they have, and suggest treatments/tests—but because you’re not licensed, you basically take all that to the attending/resident who hears you out and then says ‘yea’ or ‘nay.’  As the year progresses, hopefully you hear more ‘yeas’ and fewer ‘nays.’

At the end of this year/the beginning of 4th year, there’s another board exam called STEP 2.  Half is your typical multiple choice test, with a numeric score—much like STEP 1—while half is a pass/fail practical where you work with standardized patients.

Year 4 (MS4)

Hopefully by now your character has figured out what they want to specialize in.  I can go over specialties in another post if anyone’s curious, but the biggest ones are basically the same as the ones listed as core rotations during the MS3 year.  There’s a giant application/interview process that takes up the lion’s share of the summer/fall/winter for interviews with residency.  At the end of the process, everyone ranks the residencies they interviewed with from most to least favorite, and at the same time the residencies rank their interviewees from most to least.  The whole thing goes into a giant computer algorithm to give as many people as possible as high a choice as possible, and then on the same day of the year, at the same time, MS4s across the country take a deep breath and open envelopes saying where they ‘matched.’

In addition, with those pesky core rotations out of the way, the character has time to take electives that may or may not be applicable to their future specialty—me, I’m going for emergency medicine, so I’m doing several rotations in EM as well as EMS, but I’m also doing a two week course forensics because it sounds awesome.

Otherwise, 4th year is widely known as the ‘take a breath’ year.  People get married or have babies during this time, travel, and generally start to act like human beings again.  There’s space in your schedule that’s off—it’s generally intended for interviews or studying for STEP 2 if you’re taking it late, but people will use it for anything.

Residency

Not going to give too much detail about it, seeing as how your character is technically a doctor at this point, but residency is basically 3-5 years where your character trains in a specialty—yes, they’re physicians, but they don’t know everything about their particular field and need trained.  You’re in this weird limbo between student and employee; you make a salary (although a very low one considering the number of hours) and can prescribe medication, perform procedures, etc., but an attending is responsible for you, you still attend a weekly lecture, and you can’t practice independently.  To give you an idea of how hard these years are, they recently had to limit things like “don’t make residents work more than 36 hours in a row,” and “don’t put the doctor who graduated med school a month ago in charge of an entire floor of ICU patients for a night with no backup.”  Incredibly, some of the old-school attendings think said changes are a bad idea and will produce doctors who are “weak.”

Also, you thought your character was done with standardized tests?  You sweet summer child.  STEP 3 has to be finished before you can complete residency, and is usually done during intern year.  The good side of this is, you’re in a residency now, so as long as you pass, no one cares about the score.

Random notes:

—This is a sample timeline, following your ‘traditional’ student.  It’s becoming more and more common for people to take a couple of years off after undergrad and apply for medical school after that.  If you want a chance for your character to gain some non-medical life experience (travel, other skill sets, becoming a parent, etc.), this is a good chance for them to do it!

—I’ve been asked by a writer I know in RL how young someone could potentially become a doctor.  I think she wanted to put in a prodigy kind of person.  The problem with that is that medical schools don’t just look for smarts, they look for maturity—imagine having someone who looks like they can’t drink yet tell you you’ve got a terminal disease, and you can see why.  That said, there are a couple of accelerated programs, where I’ve seen people graduate undergrad a year early and go straight into medical school, or where they condense medical school into three whirlwind years because the person’s on track for a specific primary care residency.  So if most people graduate medical school at age 26-27, you could have someone out at 25 or maybe 24, but probably no younger.  And remember, they’ll still need residency training from there.

—Not gonna lie, medical school is incredibly difficult.  That said, I think the best students/doctors are the ones who maintain an outside interest or two, so don’t feel like your character can only have medical skills (*cough*Grey'sAnatomy*cough*) .  Give them a few side interests to maintain their spirit.

—I can give more detail about any and all of these if anyone asks; these are supposed to help you understand what your character has had to go through to be a doctor, not be a full detail spiel.  I can also do ‘day in the lifes’ if someone’s writing a med student character and wants an accurate description, but let’s be real: most people want to write the master, not the pupil.

Can you dislike a show (or the folks behind it) and do it as a good fan?

And more importantly: how?

The  Sherlocked con has me seeing several people vocally, publicly express their frustrations both with the event and also the folks putting it on, how they’re doing that. And it’s not that I always disagree. It’s more that the best parts of fandom (the parts I’m most at home with) tend to take a live-and-let-live approach. If pro-Mofftiss and anti-Mofftiss were ships, this behavior would have me feeling more than a bit …. ehhhh?

Only they’re not ships, they’re existing people who have taken specific actions that has RL consequences, so I’m not sure the standards are quite the same.

Still, I do worry we’re keeping people from enjoying a show they can like in a way we once did. Which still leaves me feeling more than a bit uncomfortable.

So: any thoughts? How can you dislike a show (passionately!), even hate the creators, and still be respectful while doing it?

can we maybe not “headcanon” things about real people, especially about their sexuality/gender

also can we maybe not ship real people who aren’t actually together (and even when they are together can we maybe not draw/write explicit stuff about them)

and can we maybe be able to separate real people from the characters that they play or the public personas that they put on

can we MAYBE remember that celebrities are people too and stop glorifying them/producing explicit content of them/seeing them as untouchable? idk i just think that would be neat

I’m so torn between clean-and-tidy-Remus and messy-oh-my-god-James-where-are-my-robes???????????-Remus

Like, imagine Remus, who the Marauders laugh at because “Monster? Really? Remus, you fold your socks. Forgive me for not trembling at the sight of you!"

Who has his clothes organised in colour in his drawers, and his chest is SO asymmetrical and neat that it actually pains Sirius to look at. And everything has to be in the right place; a Remus who takes his books and quills out of his bag and always puts them in the same place in every class or he can’t work properly.

And when he isn’t paying Sirius any attention, the latter moves one of his pencils out of place because he knows it will irk Remus, and he preens under his gaze, irritated or otherwise, vindictively smug as Remus snatches his pencil back and positions it, shooting him a dark glare. Sometimes, Sirius goes one step further and throws his pencil on the opposite side of the classroom, JUST before the professor comes in, if only for the joy of watching Remus’ eye twitch throughout the lesson as he can’t retrieve it for another 55 minutes.

But I’m talking about a Remus who is such a neat-freak because it’s the one thing he can control and it doesn’t quite make up for that little thing he can’t control, but he pretends it does.

But what about a Remus who wears EVERYONE ELSES clothes because he can never find his own and mumbling because ”Merlin, James, you have incredibly skinny legs,“ and wincing every time he walks because there is honestly no oxygen flowing to certain areas, like "hOW CAN YOU MOVE IN THESE?? I CANT EVEN BREATHE!”

a Remus who leaves his underwear wherever he takes them off and has a clucking Sirius trailing after him, picking them up and telling him “you HAVE A DRAWER for a REASON”

And Peter (having the bed closest to the bathroom) ALWAYS finds pieces of his uniform around his bed: a tie under his pillow, an odd sock under the mattress and it will be 2 in the morning, when Pete suddenly goes “oh” and the other three boys can only just see him in the darkness get out of bed, walk over and hand Remus back his boxers

Messy hair, looking like he’d just apparated or flooed or stepped out of an avalanche, and his tie is never properly done because it’s too fiddly for him in a morning and he barely sleeps and honestly, who can be bothered to tie a tie???? James??? How do you do that? and so James ends up tying his tie for him EVERY morning, since he’s the mother hen of the group and one of his babies is struggling.

And he’s not scruffy, but his robes are shabby (after his dad lost his job at the ministry, they had always struggled financially so his clothes were secondhand or handmade by his mum). His trousers are either two long so he has to roll them up a bit or barely brushing his ankles, and his shirt is never tucked in (unless Sirius manhandles him and forcibly shoves it down his waistband because “dear MERLIN remus is it THAT difficult to look presentable, you mongrel tosspot!” because he’s a Pureblood, no matter how hard he tries to reject it, and he retains that obsession with perfect appearances so messy Remus kills him.

(deep down, he finds Remus’ long and scraggly hair very endearing, though he wont admit it and protests to his dying day that he needs a haircut)

The worst though, by far, is when Remus starts growing a beard and mustache. And it’s not by choice!! it’s just he can’t see the point in shaving it off, especially once the war starts and they’ve got bigger things on their mind. but the others hate it, like HATE IT. Sirius always complains that it thaws his chin when they kiss, and Peter strokes it in lieu of a hello. James sees it and exasperatedly says, “really Moony? wasnt one furry problem enough??”

I dunno man, just a Remus who can have some leeway in his life and doesn’t have to worry about these things because he knows his friends are there to watch his back

…………and shave his beard off at 4 in the morning when he’s fallen asleep because honestly, remus we ARE DOING YOU a FAVOUR !!!!!!!! now hold still

There r some kd hardcore shippers who think that kd isnt an actual thing and its only their fantasy. They also write "we support kxk" in their bio. I'm a kaisoo shipper and I think that JI and Ks are a couple but I don't understand those shippers. I mean... u ship bcs you think they are in love, right?

those are ‘casual’ shippers. kxk really fucked some of them over and they refuse to get over it. but also some people just like the IDEA of ji and ks being together; they think by saying 'i’m not pushing my fantasies’ on them, that it makes them a good person or reasonable shipper. because in this fandom, if you say you think ks and ji are dating, you’re automatic scum. this has nothing to do with 'fantasies’. you’ll never say ks and mixnah or irexne or whatever else girl he barely interacted with could be a 'fantasy’ of the shipper.

it’s just really hard for people to wrap their heads around the fact that 2 guy idols in one of the most popular kpop bands could be tgt. and ofc it don’t help that we have people who think all and ever ship ever is real. that’s not what i’m saying.

kds circumstances, imo, are very rare. there’s no other real ship in exko. chanbeak, xiu_chen, or whoever else is allowed to openly feel each other up on stage and do variety shows tgt. or like acknowledge the fact that they know each. or like sit by each other without the sitting arranging changing mid showcase. or like stand beside each other without members forcing themselves inbetween…

like i’m sorry. but i have been a kpop fan for almost a decade now and the rumors/things i’ve seen circulating about kd; i have neveeer seen before. hell, the media claimed ji injured himself on a skiing incident and the only person connected to skiing was ks who purchased equipment before the fact. it’s all these little things add up and ppl refuse to see because they can’t get pass “2 boy idols”.

supporting kxk or pretending to support kxk doesn’t make you special. the blind item literally described kd and then mentioned it was buried in the same month of kxk, it just funny to me. skeptical is cool; but that fucking blind? but anyway supporting every kpop confirmed rs makes you look good.

anyway, people can like kd in their fanfiction and not acknowledge they could be tgt in rl all they want to.

It would be a lot easier to take the concept of “cultural appropriation” seriously if a handful of people didn’t screech the term every single time a piece of gear representing a RL culture (or should I specify, a culture that these people specifically exotify, fetishize, and romanticize, because there’s never many complaints about the Japanese or European inspired things in game, even all the hella Catholic religious symbolism, or all the Thavnairian gear and turbans) is thrown into the game, even if it’s a normal article of clothing with no spiritual/religious significance that is open for everyone to wear even in real life and often come from cultures who are very welcoming and love to see outsiders learning about and partaking in their culture. Nothing like undermining your own cause. Stop crying wolf and trying to earn yourself SJW points championing some “downtrodden” people who probably don’t even want your white asses defending them in that specific matter. You’re more offensive than you are progressive.

Do antis and aphobes who yell about shipping actually give a damn about RL pedophilia culture like super extreme gender specific school dress codes, or parents who don’t let girls wear like tank tops or leggings in the house because it’s “inappropriate” for the father/brothers to see, or parents who think their same sex children don’t get to have boundaries from them because “we’re all boys/girls here,” or parents who tell their daughters “you’re a woman now” the day they get their first period and then treat them as sexually equivalent to a woman even though they’re maybe 10 or 12, or mothers who think they can put their hands up their daughter’s shirt to “stretch it out” or minutely pick over her body sexually “because I just don’t want you to look like rape bait, sweetie"—or is it only if it’s fictional characters in a made up story where half the time what’s going on isn’t nearly that bad anyway?

You didn’t think of yourself as a competitive person, you were never bothered when you lost a game. Who knew it would be a simple muggle game to bring it out of you

But you wanted nothing more than to wipe that stupid smug smile off of Sirius Blacks face. Tonight the was the weekly night that the pair of yous got together with James and Lily a sort of 'double date night’.

It was a simple muggle game that you were all playing, twister lily said it was called and it was boys vs girls. You had begun to play half-heartedly but the more times Sirius and James won the more it began to piss you off

“enough!” You shouted as they won yet another round you looked at Lily and held out your hand for the hair bobble on her wrist. Your eyes narrowed and locked with Sirius’s. His shit eating grin still plastered across his face, you furrowed your eyebrows and flung your hair up in the best messy half bun half ponytail you would manage

“ooh she means business, Pads" James mocked nudging Sirius in the ribs with his shoulder "my ten galleons back, they actually win for once"

"another round Black?” You tease arching your eyebrow

Sirius had suddenly gotten very quiet, the famous smirk on his melting away. His brows were now furrowed and his cheeks a slight tinge of pink. Was Sirius Black Blushing?!

“I..I. Um.. I’m gonna pass” he said his attempt to act cool failing dreadfully

“oh come on now pads, you can’t chicken out not” lily laughed

Your eyes followed the full length of your boyfriend until they landed on your boyfriend’s trousers. His bulge had gotten considerably larger and his trousers were slightly beginning to tent. When you realised why you also turned slightly pink

“Nah, actually I think I’m done with this game now,” I said trying to cover for him feeling slightly guilty

“what! Oh, come one it’s just starting to get interesting….” James started before trailing off also realizing about Sirius predicament

“oh” Both Lily and James said in unison

“she only does that when …..” Sirius said through gritted teeth, gesturing slightly.

You all sat down and began to try and move on from the situation

“Sorry, pads” you whispered over to him" I’ll make up to you" winking at him as he blushed a little again, making Sirius blush was now your new favourite thing

Reading anecdotes of Sid with the Cup, sharing it with random people he meets… I don’t understand people who don’t like this guy. He’s just so good? And he could be a total douche, but he’s not? He was treated so shitty as a kid (don’t even get me started on hockey parents in this country), and yet still remained kind… I don’t know, man. I’m so pro-Sid by now that it would take something major to get me to even be objective about him. Gosh. I’m so glad he’s the captain; I’m so glad I get to see his career.

Shout out to everyone who doesn’t want to be a mother, cannot be a mother for medical reasons, or had terrible experiences with their mothers.

You are important and wonderful. You are not defined by being (or not being) a parent. It’s ok if you don’t want to see your mom this Mother’s Day. I see you.

Sorry to bother but it happens that I have a friend who sees Supernatural an he says that Destiel will never be canon because Dean is too male chauvinist (this friend is not homophobic, he'd be okay with a gay couple) and that the whole show is male chauvinist too but I don't know how to argue it with him. I mean, I think that about the show too, but not so much about Dean Winchester. Maybe you could explain what you think about it?

Whoa, no bother at all - what are tumblr friends for if not proving RL friends wrong?

So, first - this has nothing to do with anything, but you woke my inner language monster, and now you’re going to suffer a paragraph of consequences, because chauvinism - now, that’s a word I haven’t heard in a long time. It’s a ‘70s thing, ins’t it? Male chauvinist pigs and all that. I know we used it back when I was desperate to be a Communist, and we comrade’d one another in a laudable effort to pretend the Berlin wall was still up and everyone was into LSD and free love and we actually had something to be angry about.

(Turns out the word comes from Chauvin, some officer guy in Napoleon’s army who was extremely patriotic, and that’s mostly what it means - how it came to mean “an attitude that the members of your own sex are always better than those of the opposite sex”, that’s something I wish I had the time to investigate.)

My second point is, why couldn’t someone be gay and chauvinist? Gay people are people, which means some of them are complete and utter dicks. I personally know at least two gay men who have horrific political opinions and are complete mcp despite being out and proud and sharing an apartment with a (male) partner and an assortment of cats, pianos and art books. I mean, in an ideal world, people who belong to a minority group should, like, avoid sympathizing for a majority group who’d have then hanged and quartered if at all possible, but sadly, this isn’t always the case. I still remember a thing that happened in Italy a few years back - a black guy who tried like nothing else to become a member of a Nazi ‘party’ and went all the way to court because they wouldn’t let him join. And he wasn’t doing it out of some cunning political design or anything - he actually held Nazi beliefs, but he’d apparently forgotten that, in the eyes of European Nazis, he was the ‘undesirable’ one. Whoops.

That said, I don’t see how the term applies to Dean at all. I mean, again - the definition of ‘male chauvinist’ goes as follow: “a male who patronizes, disparages, or otherwise denigrates females in the belief that they are inferior to males and thus deserving of less than equal treatment or benefit”. Now, I think I said before that when I started to watch the show, I didn’t particularly like Dean. He had this fuckboy aura, you know? The love ‘em and leave ‘em personality I just can’t stand in real men - and, well, I like to think even fictional men have to work very hard to be likeable when they’re like that. But even back then, I never thought of him as a male chauvinist. Sure, he was a bit of an idiot, but nothing more than that. Like, when he’s short and dismissive with women, that generally comes from a place of genuine concern - for instance, he didn’t want Haley to come with them to hunt the wendigo back in S02E01 because he knew she would get hurt, or worse, not because she was a girl.

His default functioning mode is to lie to everybody, and his tactics involve, first and foremost, to maintain a safe distance from others. This normally translates into flirting and smiling, which come off as a bit assholish when he’s in a position of power, and as downright irritating when he’s not (for instance, think about how he is around police officers - the textbook definition of ‘little shit’). So there’s that, and okay. But when he’s around women who can take care of themselves, like Ellen or Jody, he never treats them any differently than he would men. I think he even discussed the thing out loud, maybe with Jo? How his main categorization there was hunter vs civilian, and not men vs women? I’m slightly feverish and out of focus right now, so I’d rather not check, but I’m sure there was something like that. And also: one of the things I like about him, and, incidentally, another argument to use against your friend, is that Dean never thinks less of a woman just because he’s slept with her. This, in my book, is the mark of a true misogynist - how they tend to divide the world between ‘bitches who won’t sleep with me’ and ‘sluts who’ll sleep with anybody, including me’. I’m currently locked in a vicious fight with a colleague of mine who’s exactly like that, and it’s truly amazing how he can both be pathetically grateful to this woman he’s seeing because, yay!, sex and companionship, while disparaging her every chance he’s got because, you know, that’s not how proper women should behave. And Dean - Dean’s not like that. The most glaring example is perhaps Lisa - how they had a weekend of dirty, dirty, dirty sex and yet when they see each other again, Dean’s not dismissive of her in any way. Just like he never says a word against Cassie, or those two hunters we know he’s slept with, because that’s just not who he is.

(This goes both ways, of course: when faced with a female opponent, Dean never underestimates her and never holds back.)

The thing is, I think your friend may be referring to performing!Dean, because, even though Dean’s not like that, the world he lives in - that’s a different story. Or, well, that’s what we believed until S11 went and shit rainbows all over our screens, because, man - turns out hunters just don’t care? That there are women who hunt alone and gay hunters who’re well-known and respected in the community and whoa, Dean got it so wrong all these years. And this, as many discussions here on tumblr have been pointing out for months, is the real game changer: not Dean’s feelings, per se, but what happens around him. Because if Dean had grown up in this world, and not his father’s - well, we don’t even have to imagine what kind of person he’d be today. We know.

How's it going?

itty bitty rl vent/dump:

recently the family pet cat passed away. he’s pretty much the first real pet we had, so his death hit us all pretty hard. it’s still kind of jarring to think that this guy who was a large part of our daily rituals/routines is gone. the house felt a lot emptier without him.

but! on the brighter side, we’ve also recently got a kitten! he is small and determined to chew on everything.

regardless of Silver’s intentions or whatever his motivations might be, the relationship he shares with Flint is a platonic one (though i’d lean more towards a brotherly type bond). so to take their friendship, their bond, and force it to be romantic is really… disrespectful imo. it’s disrespectful to Thomas, who not only is the backbone of this entire show and is the love of James’s life, but also a gay man whose existence is erased for the sake of shipping. it’s insulting to think that Flint would just fall in love with whichever male character that he shares a deep bond with, because of course, he’s gay!!! what do you expect? despite the fact that it’s very clearly shown he has not, and will not, ever get over his loss of Thomas. it’s disrespectful to Madi, who Silver slowly developed feelings for over the span of a season (which btw, for a het relationship it’s done so well because too often do we have a male/female interaction happen in one ep and in the next they’re??? fucking??? like wtf???) because sure, let’s shove aside a black woman so we can ship the white, blue-eyed pretty boy with another white dude (who is still very much in love with his presumed dead soulmate). it also perpetuates the idea that only romantic relationships are worth any value and that platonic and/or familial bonds take less precedence because two people can’t POSSIBLY love each other unless they’re romantically linked.

it does a huge disservice to Black Sails as a show in general too, because the show painstakingly makes an effort to show us all sorts of different bonds between their characters, and never has one ever been more important than the other (unless the characters make that choice. but that’s THEIR choice, not the show’s narrative to shove them down that path)

i think this also indirectly ties into the whole debate of Anne, Max, James, Thomas being bi when they’re all gay. Anne’s bond with Jack, despite having her canonically say “i can’t be your wife, Jack. but you and i are going to be partners until they put us in the fucking ground” is devalued entirely. people still believe because she and Jack had sex and that Jack is in love with her = Anne’s totally bi she can’t be gay! or the fact that it’s been explicitly stated by Miranda herself that what James/Thomas share is “entirely something else”; that just because she had an affair with James first, and subsequently had sex (albeit it was the saddest sex scene that has ever graced our screens) with him, James is nothing but bi when his story is fully about his struggles as a gay man.

anyway holy shit that completely got away from me lmao. tl;dr– yeah i take issue with it anon, oh do i have an issue with it

My friend is trying otoge

I have a friend who was a little confused about otome/didn’t really get it but was like “whatever, you do you,” but then yesterday, out of nowhere, she revealed to me that over the weekend that she tried some otome games.

But, EVEN THOUGH SHE KNOWS WHOM SHE IS FRIENDS WITH, she did not consult me about her first game choices. So, the things she tried were……… less than ideal for first games.

But there were some generally great exchanges and insight that blew my mind coming from someone who had tried all of two games.

Friend: haha well like romance novels..generally the more over the top stupid, the more i like it

Me: well, do i have some good news for you

—–

me (we are discussing MCs and I’m gushing about the flawed Liar MC): most MCs are perfect angel women who are just really naive

her: yeah… i noticed a whole thing of them…not really doing anything…but trying to? in the ones i played

me: naive af in your 20s… it’s so weird to me

her: and somehow being irresistible to several men anyway. but somehow they’ve never dated before and never knew how pretty they were and apparently have never had male attention until now

me: the fact that you have picked up how ridiculous this is from two games is amusing to me

—–

her (i suggested a few games the day before): so on this [midnight] cinderella one, what character did you like the best

me: SID i mean…..

her: hahahha that’s who i picked

me: bias goes Sid, Louis, Leo, Byron and then the rest i have no real order

me: i constantly find myself going: god dammit, sid, in his route

her: yeah he feels a little gaslighty. that whole…i like you…you’re a ugly waffling thing

me: that song trouble by taylor swift is about him. fucking trouble

her: haha yeah i was like…let’s see what this “bad boy” is about

me: i can’t help it, i’m a slut for bad boys
