who looks this good in middle school

  • Male Writer: Ah, anniversary jokes are so funny. Because chicks always hate it when you don't remember anniversaries! A plus gold very original
  • Male Writer: Mother in laws amirite?
  • Male Writer: My male character who is an author insert of myself pines after a woman I used to pine after in high school. Then they have sex. This is good literature.
  • Male Writer: Ugh female books are so romance filled
  • Male Writer: And girl fanfics, so mary suey
  • Male Writer: Now listen about this original middle aged man who is an expert in everything, suffers from ennui, looks like me, acts like me, and gets all the girls i want.
  • Male Writer: She was sexy in an alluring, boring way, filled with purple prose and riddled with objectification
  • Male Writer: If i make a female character parrot my misogynistic views, they cease to be misogynistic! Are you saying you don't respect my fake female characters opinions, feminists?
  • Male Writer: a good action girl is one who looks hot at all times
  • Male Writer: If the female main character got in an asskicking line, my work is Feminist with a capital F and no one can criticize me
  • Specifically White Male Writer: Heroic tropes are so overdone. I'm going to create a boring white guy with stubble to be a completely original antihero no one has ever seen before TM.
  • Same Guy: It's original because he is a jerk who gets away with bad behavior, just like I wish i could.
  • Another Specifically White Male Writer: It's in my universe to only have white men do things in my book. I mean, don't you care about historical accuracy
  • Same Guy: I mean, it's a generic fantasy verse with no real life time period equivalent and i haven't done any research, but i'm SURE that it's historically accurate. To that dark mideval dragon fighting europe period
  • Same Guy: Where in Europe? Who cares!
  • Male Writer: There is no better way to introduce a female character to a male character than by him saving her.
  • Male Writer: Characters hating each other is good sexual tension!
  • Male Writer: One female character and five male characters is a good team balance
  • Male Writer: If my female character chooses to act in a sexist tropey way, it's not sexist. In fact, because she CHOSE to do it, it is Feminist.
  • Male Writer: I am original
Kiss Scenes 101: How To Write The Perfect Kiss

Anonymous said: Hey there. Not sure what kind of questions you accept but…here goes. Do you have any tips for writing kiss scenes? Not fluffy kiss scenes but really passionate ones. Thanks!

I was hoping to post this on Valentine’s Day, but I got a little busy so it got pushed back. Happy (late) Valentine’s Day, and enjoy!

|| 1 || Detail. Remember that describing a kiss means including more detail than just what is happening and when. Be sure to include description of how the protagonist’s five senses are being affected, as well as some other elements such as:

  • What the protagonist smells
  • What the protagonist tastes
  • What the protagonist hears
  • What the protagonist sees
  • The inner monologue of the protagonist, if the point of view in your story allows it.

|| 2 || Make the kiss(es) realistic. Situational details are a key factor in making the scene more satisfying and memorable. Pay attention to details like the character’s physical characteristics, such as glasses, braces, messy hair, etc. and incorporate those tiny details into the scene.

She turned her head to the left, leaning in to brush her lips against her partner’s, but was interrupted when their noses bumped together, making them both giggle, and the awkwardness fade away.

I mean, sure, that’s not the best example, but at least it’s better than:

Their lips collided, and they made out flawlessly, as if they were in a Nicholas Sparks novel.

Little details like bumping noses, giggling, grinning like an idiot, stumbling, hesitating, etc. can make the scene so much better.

|| 3 || It doesn’t always have to be a full on make out session every time two characters kiss. A lot of the time, kisses are short and sweet and that can be enough to send a substantial spark to the fingers and toes, and send the reader out smiling. Pecks, if only on the cheek, can be more than enough and are extremely underrated.

|| 4 || Pay attention to what your characters do with the rest of their bodies. Kissing is in no way just about the mouth. Keep in mind that most of the time, people don’t just lean forward and mush their faces together. Grab the face, caress the lower back, hold their hand, hell, sweep them off their feet and carry them into the sunset! Don’t just stand there!

|| 5 || Lastly, but not least..ly.. VOCABULARY. Using the right wordage can improve your kiss scene-no, scratch that- ANY SCENE a million times better. I’ve made an entire post on vocabulary and synonyms to use for your sex/kiss scenes {shameless plug} and you can find it:

HERE HERE HERE HERE HERE HERE HERE HERE

|| 6 || Read kiss scenes as a writer would. Read kiss scenes that you’ve enjoyed and nitpick them to find what you do and don’t like about them, adding the good things to your own scene and being wary of the bad.

And now, here are some extra tips to get you going:

 I. Practice - If you’re in a relationship or have a really great friend {;)}, practice the act and take notes on how it actually feels! A lot of people who read these kiss scenes take it as the reality because some have never kissed anyone, so teach them how it’s done!

II. Know your characters - Would they actually bite their partner’s lip like that? Would they actually go as far as caressing the majestical inner thigh? Think about it.

III. Add elements of the setting - Are your characters standing in the middle of a crowd? In a high school hallway? Elevator? Include details like sounds and smells and lighting to give the reader a more full-sensory experience.

IV. Dialogue can be fun to play with - Kissing doesn’t always have to be silent. Maybe they break for a second to say “You’re so beautiful” or “Did you pop a mint when I wasn’t looking, oh sneaky one?”. Include those little mutterings or comments because they are some of the best parts.

V. Have someone you trust read it - If you’ve got a good friend who will be honest, have them read and suggest edits. Google docs is fantastic for having your friends read and help you edit your work, because you can change the setting to “suggest edits” and you can see everything they’ve suggested without permanently altering the scene.

choices stories explained badly

the freshman: become a grumpy old dude’s entertainment slave to get money for school where you’ll up liking it, then learn that anything that seems too good to be true (i.e. three people lowkey being in love with you at once) probably is and will evidently fall apart. oh and for some reason it’ll be your fault. it isn’t, everyone’s gonna blame you tho. but it’s cool, friendship prevails or whatever and everyone’s gay.

the sophomore: it’s the freshman except everyone looks like suburban middle-class parents now.

the rules of engagement: don’t marry cheating, lying scum bags who are predestined to be named something fratboy-esque like trent. marry hot men you meet on a cruise after three months of knowing them for money instead.

the crown and the flame: uniting divided kingdoms takes a lot of death and money, also you may or may not have some sexy times with the enemy’s son. the fire nation is the last surviving type of bender and bradley james turns into a dragon. avan jogia is hot and mysterious.

lovehacks: date men for work they said. it’ll be fun they said.

the royal romance: who needs a comfy life in new york maxwell i love you when you can have adventures maxwell why won’t you love me back in a far off country with a handsome maxwell prince? leave your life behind. leave your friends. it’s all good.

most wanted: murder, scandal, and revenge. you’re gonna ship massey and dave and there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it. and not to be that guy but where is book two. not to be shady but we’re moving on to the freshman: senior home and most wanted hasn’t even—

endless summer: you just came out here to have a good time and you’re literally being attacked right now. your entire life has been a lie and your gbf was stolen by sentient plants. you’ve sold your morals so that your fave would like you. why is tony stark so sketchy.

haunting of braidwood manor: you go on a haunted slumber party with a family of ghosts because you wanna help your ghost brother and oh hey, ghost girl is pretty cute. actually she’s really cute. the power of the lesbians has made ghost girl a normal girl again. this is my not-ghost girlfriend and we’re in love, thanks for your support best-male-bro-pal-who-i’m-not-interested-in-because-i’m-gay.

hero: everyone bullies you because you’re broke and don’t have the diamonds for this and that’s all we know so far

Q: What was the reason that made you want to become a singer? V: In my 6th year of elementary school…

Suga: In my 5th year of elementary school…

Jimin: Let’s speak one by one.

Jungkook: For me it’s 1st year of middle school.

Suga: It was around my 5th year of elementary school when Stony Skunk released their 2nd album. I wasn’t into music at that time but one day I was watching a music program and got totally amazed by Stony Skunk’s performance. They completely dominated the stage with a free spirit… I fell in love with that performance for a while and then after I listened to Epik High’s ‘Fly’, I thought “Ah, I have to rap.” I wanted to get into hip hop more so I started composing as well. It was like something I had to do. I think I have never changed my dream.

Jin: When I was in 1st year of middle school, I was chatting with my friends and we just said “I’m gonna be a singer!” very vaguely. At that time I just thought of being a cool singer, without any plan. “I want to make this vague dream come true. It’s a cool dream.”

J-hope: When I was younger I stood out quite peculiarly at school. At places like talent shows.

Rap Monster: Yeah, there’s no way you can’t stand out.

J-hope: Whenever I participate in things like talent shows, my friends would push me to the front to dance, it felt really good dancing in front of many people.

Jimin: All~ stage

J-hope: Those experiences made me think “Ah, I really have to learn dancing”, so I started searching for videos and learned dancing for real. I looked at singers who sing and dance at the same time and found them cool. So I wanted to become one myself.

Jimin: I started my singer dream from dancing too.

Rap Monster: Back in my 1st year of middle school, I really liked music so I just had this vague thought “I want to make music”. But around the 2nd year of middle school, I went to Hongdae and saw some hyungs rapping there, and they were really cool. I thought “I want to make music like that too” and started nurturing my music dream.

Suga: (looking at V) And you?

V: I’m like Hobi-hyung too. You know there are kids who always stay quiet at school but would stand out when there’s a festival around.

Rap Monster: Seems like you were one of those kids.

All: (approve)

V: I would stand out whenever there’s a festival, but it’s thanks to Big Bang’s Daesung-sunbaenim’s ‘Look At Me Gwisoon’ that I gained my popularity in 6th year of elementary school.

Rap Monster: That was your debut stage.

V: Yeah, so I got quite big in Geochang.

Rap Monster: Geochang’s specialty!

J-hope: So it’s ‘Look At Me Taehyung’.

V: After that I was praised as the ‘characters of festivals’. But my popularity started slowly slipping down from middle school, so I thought “Ah, what I can do well is standing on the stage!!” and told my dad. So my dad…

Suga: I think I heard the next part over 100 times.

J-hope: Does your saxophone story have no ending?

V: Why do you say saxophone! I haven’t even mentioned saxophone yet!

Suga: Next your father will say “Shouldn’t you know how to play at least one instrument?” and so you started learning saxophone.

V: Ah yes…

Jin: You just need to talk up until that part.

Suga: That part is the reason why you wanted to become a singer.

Rap Monster: You just need to talk about your determination of being a singer.

Jin: Ah, saxophone! (laughs)

V: But I haven’t! Even! Brought up the word “saxophone” yet. I haven’t brought up it yet.

All: (laugh)

J-hope: You can talk about why you learned saxophone in any question.

Rap Monster: He suddenly went from talking about festivals to the instrument thing (ㅋㅋㅋ) What about Jungkook?

Jungkook: I joined a B-boying club in middle school and started learning then. But my parents said I wasn’t tall and told me not to learn it.

J-hope: That’s right, they said that a lot.

Jungkook: So I stopped with B-boying and started on my own by searching for choreography videos, then I saw Big Bang’s G-dragon-sunbaenim and thought “Ah! This is it!”, after that I started dreaming of becoming a singer.

Q: Do you come across the hip hop genre from the beginning? What got you start making music?

Suga: My dream was “I want to make good music and let many people hear it” from the beginning, I listened to various kinds of music and took hip hop as my base.

Rap Monster: I think I started with the mindset of “Let’s make my music” without caring about genres. Hip hop is good, but even if it’s not hip hop, I want to show Kim Namjoon’s sincerity with any genre. I hated making insincere music, you know.

J-hope: Hmh… I started with dancing so I came across hip hop quite easily. I thought of hip hop from the beginning already, but after meeting Rap Monster and Suga-hyung, I was influenced directly and grew interest towards hip hop.

V: I have been liking hip hop since I was little.

Jin: I started having interest in hip hop after I became a trainee, every week Rapmon would give me a recommended song list, you remember that? (looking at Rap Monster) I listened to it every single day~ As I listened to it I started growing interest towards hip hop.

Suga: Yeah, Rapmon had it hard.

J-hope: Training time!

Jimin: At first I just wanted to become a singer without any plan at all, but I got a lot of help from the hyungs. They told me about genres and recommended me songs so I could get it easily, I listened to it and found it fun. That’s why I could have interest in hip hop.

Jungkook: I can talk about it now but honestly it was hard for me.

J-hope: Yeah. It was really hard for Jungkook at first when he came across hip hop.

Rap Monster: That’s right. Passion is not something that can be forced.

J-hope: Yeah.

Jungkook: At first I kept listening to it and kept trying, but it was hard.

Jimin: Yeah, we talked about it a lot back then.

Suga: Why was it?

Jimin: One day Jungkook suddenly said “Hyung, I don’t know.” He said it was too difficult.

Suga: So we recommended him other genres besides hip hop. We told him “Just listen to music”.

V: That’s right. Hyungs picked a lot of lists for me. Especially Rapmon-hyung gave me a lot.

Rap Monster: Listening to hip hop helped Jungkook a lot with doing his favorite kind of choreography, so at first I let him listen to R&B a lot as well so he could easily catch it.

J-hope: The biggest thing as Jungkook slowly being introduced to music is his trip to America. (laughs)

Jimin: Ow~ Good trip.

kepzandme  asked:

Sci, are Clint's issues with food and childhood hunger canon in Marvel? Because they are such a prominent theme in many many fics (I have used it myself) so just curious if they are part of the comics. Also, does Rhodey know that Tony asked Clint to take care of DJ if he and Steve are gone?

I honestly don’t remember it being explicitly covered in the comics.  But there are things that are:

-Clint’s father was physically and emotionally abusive
-Like half of the fathers in the Marvel universe, he was also an alcoholic who hit his wife
-They were very definitely poor
-His parents died in a car accident
-He and his brother ran away, joined the circus, and fell under the thrall of yet another abusive father figure.

This equals hunger.  So why DON’T I remember this being focused on?

Because everything I’ve ever read about hunger, non-fiction or fiction, has been written by women, or PoC.  Guess who almost never, ever gets to write white, male lead character superheroes for the big two publishers?  Women.  And PoC.

So the things that are written about Clint and his difficult childhood (or Tony and his difficult childhood, or Bruce and his difficult childhood, and hell, I think they retconned Steve’s merely dead dad to be, you guessed it, alcoholic and abusive!, so him and his difficult childhood) are written through a white, male lens.  And white men, in general, are more comfortable writing about certain types of abuse (physical and verbal) than others (sexual and emotional).

Because certain types of suffering are ‘manly.’  Are ‘acceptable’ in the backstory of a hyper masculine character.  Look at the same tired tropes trotted out over and over and over.  The suffering heaped on heroic male characters tends to follow a very easy, very comfortable path, where the writer doesn’t have to think too hard, where the character can be sympathetic, but still ‘strong.’  Still ‘tough.’ Still ‘heroic.’ Still ‘masculine.’

Violence is masculine.  Starvation is not.  Poverty is not.

Being poor is the worst sin in the United States.  It is, and anyone who tells you differently is selling something.

I did my student teaching in an inner city middle school in a not-very-good part of a solidly working class city.  And I remember the principal walking around at lunch, surreptitiously handing out lunch cards.  These were supposed to go to kids who had forgotten their lunch money that day, to entitle them to a free lunch.  But on lunch duty, I soon figured out, she was giving them to the same kids, every day.

I asked her why, and she said, these were kids who would’ve qualified for the free lunch program, she knew it, they knew it, the cafeteria ladies knew it.  But the paperwork was never filled out.  Hell, the paperwork probably never made it home.  Because when they were approved for the free lunch program, the card they were given was a different color than the card for the kids who were paying.  And they knew it.  Their peers knew it.  So they didn’t bring the paperwork home.

To repeat: Twelve year old children, children who had NO PART in their family’s financial standing, NO ABILITY to change that standing, NO CHANCE to do anything other than do their best to get by, preferred going hungry rather than deal with the shame of being visibly identified as coming from a family below the poverty line.

And for some of these kids, the free breakfast and lunch provided by schools was probably the most stable nutrition they got.

Hunger never leaves you.  Not ever.  But it is a feminine suffering, a thing spoken of condescendingly by late night “Feed the Children” ads showing starving (brown) children in some far off, unfortunate land, and written about by women who can’t figure out how to stretch what little they have to cover the heating bill and the grocery bill.  Hunger is food deserts in inner cities and canned food because you can’t afford the time or the bus fare to go to the grocery store several times a month for fresh, and so everything has to last.  It is food pantries where you’re given the allotment of rice and beans and maybe, if you’re damn lucky, a can of horrible pineapple chunks as a ‘treat.’

Hunger is not heroic.  And that’s why it’s glossed over in comics.

(Also, yes, totally Rhodey knows. 8) )

Not your son

Summery:  Lucien hasn’t spoken to his other dad, Damien’s Ex, in years. And he has good reason to avoid him. Lucien’s other father goes to his school to try and talk to him. (transphobia tw)

Lucien lounged  in his desk seat. In the margins of his notes he doodled an intricate pattern of bats.  His complete disinterest in the lecture was obvious. What possible use could knowing tangents and cosines be to him in his life. He yawned and stretched. This 50 minute class felt like it had lasted hours, and only half an hour had passed.

The teacher apparently had noticed that Lucien wasn’t paying attention, because she called on him to answer a question. He stared blankly at her for a couple seconds. He opened his mouth to ask her to repeat the question but at that moment there was a crackle of static from the intercom.

Come On

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY @destieldrabblesdaily !!!! Shirley, you are the best. the absolute best. HERE IS A BIRTHDAY GIFT OF A HIGH-SCHOOL AU FOR YOU <333

Dean let out a long, slow breath.

He’d imagined this moment so many times that he’d managed to make the reality of it feel like another daydream. Should he do it at school, or somewhere else? Separately, or all at once? Slowly, or bluntly? Seriously, or as a joke? Over and over, round and round, he’d pictured how he should come out to his friends.

And now here he was, with them all gathered around one of the tables at lunch. It was too hot for them all to be hungry; the summer had set in early, and it was all around them - in the discarded juice boxes littering the floor, and the scent of hot tarmac outside, and the whine of the air conditioning. It was putting sheens on foreheads and turning skin to gold - and Dean and his friends were at one of the outside lunch tables, enjoying it.

Jo and Anna were laughing together about a video that Ash was showing them on his phone; Charlie was talking at length to Garth about the Dungeons and Dragons game that they were both a part of, and Hannah was quietly biting into an apple as she listened in. And opposite Dean, Castiel was reading his book.

Dean watched them all for a moment, unnoticed. He had his bare arms resting on the hot metal of the table, his t-shirt sticking slightly to his lower back in the heat. Soon, they’d need to move inside - but first, he had something he needed to tell them. They were his friends. He wanted them to know.

He took a deep breath, and let it go. He could feel his heart pounding.

“Dean?” Castiel said softly; when their eyes met over the table, Dean swallowed. Castiel’s face shifted; it was the barest hint of a frown, the tiniest tilt of the head, the gentlest clouding of his blue eyes - but in the silent language that they’d built up over the years, it was a clear question. Of course, Dean thought, Castiel would realise that something was wrong.

He cleared his throat.

First crush (part 1)

Pairing: Peter Parker x Reader, Tony Stark (dad) x Reader

Summary: After being home schooled your whole life, it’s finally your first day in high school. You are so excited to finally have a chance to live a normal teenage life. Well as normal as you could get.

Word count: 1544 (this part is pretty long, the other parts are going to be shorter)

A/N: This is the first thing that I have ever written so please go easy on me. I have written five parts to this story and I’m going to post a new part everyday. I would really appreciate constructive criticism. So, if you think of something that I could do better let me know! So here we go. I hope you guys like it!

PS You can send me requests if you want! I can write about almost any Avenger. By sending me requests you can help me improve myself.

Part 2   Part 3   Part 4   Part 5

You were Tony Stark’s biggest secret. You were his daughter. Only his closest friends and the Avengers knew about you. You were tired of it. Last weekend while the Avengers were on a mission you watched all the teen movies and romantic comedies you could find on Netflix. After each movie, you were more and more tired of the way you were living. Your whole life you have been home schooled, you’ve never had any real friends or boyfriends. Not even crushes (well if you don’t count the short crush you had on Bucky when he first moved to the compound). You wanted to experience the whole teenage life. All the high school drama, hating your teachers for giving you too much homework for the weekend and crushing over all the cute high school boys. So, when your dad came back from the mission you went to him immediately and told him that you wanted to go to a regular high school. “Why in the hell would you wanna to go to that teen hell?” was your dad’s first reaction. After hours and hours of persuading him, your dad finally gave in.

anonymous asked:

what are some coping/trauma related songs you would recommend?

hi friend! I’ve gotten a couple of asks about music, so I’m gonna answer them all here. everyone copes differently and everyone has different tastes, but here’s a few recs I have based on what has helped me. (I’m favoring folk/indie here though my tastes are usually more varied, because these are related to trauma/coping more explicitly)

“download immediately I’m begging you” tier:

  • The Sunset Tree - The Mountain Goats (if you already know this album, then it sounds like a given. it’s a staple for me. in fact I’m linking the single track, This Year, which got me through several years of my life. this album is explicitly about surviving abuse)
  • linked here is A Better Son/Daughter, of off The Execution of All Things by Rilo Kiley (this one’s so good that i’m actually recommending a single track, which I never do because I prefer always to recommend albums. you might cry like a lot. I definitely did the first dozen times I heard this. also the rest of the album’s great too! more about relationships tho.)

if you only read this far, please listen to those two tracks! ^^^ <3

“saved my life” tier:

  • Transcendental Youth also by The Mountain Goats, would be my very next rec, if you want to feel like your life and your suffering are real and valid. (give the track Spent Gladiator II a listen!)
  • Lanterns - Son Lux (not about trauma, still helped me hang on by a thread when it was Bad. shameless plug, it’s patently my all-time favorite album)
  • Feel Good Ghosts - Cloud Cult (this is a Happier album that is literally about Surviving when you think you can’t anymore, it’s a little psychedelic and weird tho)
  • look friends, there is nothing wrong with a little Black Parade or Simple Plan for when it Hurts (Gerard Way and that cohort did it right all right?) This was middle school for me but this genre saved my life when I was that age

“gets me through it” tier:

  • Neon bible - Arcade Fire (track “my body is a cage” is always stuck in my head and encapsulates That feeling perfectly)
  • Good News for People Who Like Bad News - Modest Mouse (feeling bitter? this is for you!)
  • anything by Sufjan Stevens (the album Carrie & Lowell might be the most relatable, but I also love Age of Adz, All Delighted People, and Illinois. this melancholy folk singer-songwriter is my favorite artist ever maybe)

ANYWAY! that’s everything I can think of for now. thanks for reading this far, and if anyone wants like, a playlist instead of albums, let me know! that would be more varied in genre/style. or, send a genre and I can find stuff within that.

hope you’re having a great day!

Prompt: from @malindacath, “I was wondering if you could write something about Jim and Reader where they are in a relationship and anytime he compliments her, she blows it off. He goes to Uhura for answers finding out that as she grew up her family always degraded her so she really doesn’t have any self esteem or self worth even though she would do anything for everyone else”
Word Count: 1530
Author’s Note: GAH! Sorry!! I forgot the read-more cut! Getting into the mindset of this reader was SO easy for me. The first time the husband told me he loved me, my response was ‘are you sure?’ Fortunately for me, my parents weren’t the ones who fucked me up. It was school.

“Good morning, beautiful.” Jim leaned across the commissary table and dropped a kiss on your cheek, prompting a blush and slight scowl. “What?”

“Did you miss the giant spot in the middle of my forehead?” You countered, arching your eyebrow. “Not exactly enticing this morning.” You didn’t often fall victim to premenstrual pimples anymore, but you’d wakened with a zit that felt like a volcano brewing on your forehead. There was no covering it or masking it, and there was no making it go away.

“I hadn’t noticed at all. I was looking at your eyes, Y/N,” he shrugged, his glance lifting to assess the situation on your forehead. You felt yourself flushing more. “It’s tiny. Certainly doesn’t affect how gorgeous you are.”

You stared at him, expressionless. He had to be kidding, but you hadn’t finished your first coffee, and were in no mood to start a squabble about whether or not he needed his eyes checked. Instead, you returned to your meal wordlessly.

See You Next Summer

A super-quick Finaleversary fic. Thanks to Scribe for being willing to beta fics I toss at her with zero warning at the spur of the moment. Love to her, and to everyone I’ve met through Gravity Falls.

Ao3

The end of summer. 2012.

Candy and Grenda go back to Grenda’s place after seeing Mabel off. They’d planned a sleepover in advance, knowing that they’d need several hours of cuddling, cookie dough and playing dress up with Grenda’s lizard to ease the sting of saying goodbye. Candy sits up on Grenda’s shoulders, because they need Grendy to help themselves feel big and tough right now, and Grenda makes howling and roaring sounds for all she’s worth, but it’s still a sad day.

They pass Pacifica sitting out on the curb. She looks like she might be waiting for someone. Actually, by the way she’s sitting with her face in her hands, she looks like she might have been waiting for a while. Candy glances down at Grenda, and a look passes between them. Should they ask if something’s wrong? Somehow even after living through the end of the world, after seeing all social order turned upside down, it would still feel weird to go up to the most popular girl in school (the same girl who’s cut them up with cruel words more times than they can count) and ask if she’s all right.

Mabel would have done it. But Mabel isn’t there, and Candy and Grenda both badly want to get home to the blanket nest and stack of videos they know is waiting for them, so they walk on and leave Pacifica alone.

2013. The end of summer.

Pacifica isn’t exactly friends with Candy and Grenda. No, no, she’d never call them that. But, you know. Hanging out with them makes her look good by comparison.

Seeking:  Black Girlfriends

Recently I took an inventory of what my peer group has looked like over the years and I don’t see many black women in it. I remember one of my best friends in middle school was only half black and Filipino, but I could only relate to half of her. Looking through my contacts list in my phone right now, I’m counting a little over a handful of black women in my life. Those aren’t good #s and what’s equally disappointing is that they’re either extended family that I don’t talk to hardly, a friend of a friend or a business connect. The number of black men in my phone is twice as much, yet a quarter of those gents I’m only in communication with at various times throughout the year.

So, why is this? I remember as a kid–being one of the few black girls in a predominately white school, I had one bad run-in with a black girl who was a bully. Most of the few black girls in school at that time, stuck together and they all looked similar and were into similar things. But I wasn’t that girl. I was told I had “good hair”, an “ideal complexion” or my ethnicity was questioned at times for appearing indigenous or of mixed latin descent or they simply thought I was too soft and bourgie. I was definitely soft, but I grew up lower middle class and I was always a tomboy and wasn’t interested in talking about boys. Instead I was the one making friends with them while the girls were acting all coy. I wanted in on the action. I wanted to have fun. Sitting around talking about boys wasn’t nearly as interesting as joining them.

But as I get older and face all the social matters that affect my adulthood, I need more black women in my life. I need a grandmother, a mother, a sister, a friend, and an auntie. And it’s imperative. I have a severe blackness deficiency in my life and I’m tired of witnessing white nonsense without having someone to relate to on the matters at hand. Talking to white people or anyone passing for white about black struggle or colorism is pointless. They can’t empathize when they benefit from privilege. They just look at you like, “I’m sorry you have to be black, but you’re still a great person.” Then they go about their business while I have to figure out how to survive in a way that doesn’t get in their way so I won’t end up dead. Because a black person in power is always at risk for a premature death. Let’s be real. Even the Obamas aren’t immune.

Outside of coping with daily challenges, black women understand certain nuances about growing up being a black female that NO ONE will ever understand or know unless you are a black woman. Also, I’m just tired of suppressing my blackness. I really need to purge and get extra black. What that means, I will not say (for the white people reading). I just need to be around people who know how many desserts Patti Labelle has released in Walmart in the last decade.

So if you’re seeking a black girlfriend who is introspective, quirky, chill, and likes to have deep and uplifting conversation, please raise your hand. Spark a flare. Send a carrier pigeon my way with a message of existence and friendship.

YES! Then can you do a peter parker (spiderman) x reader with a soulmate au?

+ soulmate au where the one thing that they are thinking most about in that moment is tattooed on your wrist
+ peters tattoo was always vague
+ it was either ‘family’ or ‘art’ or ‘what do i want to do with my life?’
+ sometimes, though, they made him laugh
+ ‘what happens if you put a werewolf on the moon?’ or ‘what do you mean, a burrito without beans? what is this sorcery?’
+ part of him would always wonder what was on his soulmates wrist
+ and quite often, on your wrist it would just say ‘soulmate’
+ it made you feel good inside, that your soulmate was thinking of you
+ but at the same time it would make it even more difficult to figure out who your soulmate was
+ when you got to middle school you would see those kids that found their soulmates, and on peters wrist, it would say ‘when will i meet my soulmate?’
+ peter felt bad, like he was letting you down, which was an odd feeling because he didn’t really know you
+ it was at those times when you would look at your own wrist and see things like ‘i let everyone down’
+ it hurt you
+ then the two of you started high school, having no idea you went to the same school
+ during english, peter would see a math problem scrawled on his wrist
+ sometimes, if he wasn’t doing much of anything, he would do the math problem too and think only about the answer
+ when you were in math class, you would see the correct answers on your arm occasionally, and it didn’t take long for you to catch on
+ but, when you were in p.e. and peter was at lunch, you would see things like ‘is that a new skirt?’ or ‘she looks really cute when she laughs’
+ sometimes you’d even see ‘i wonder if she’s my soulmate’
+ of course, you were in p.e. so it couldn’t have been you wearing designer shoes and curling your hair differently
+ after a while, you noticed that your soulmate spent way more time thinking of ‘soulmate’ and less of anything else
+ then, one day you were eating breakfast and you noticed something different about your tattoo
+ it was a name
+ liz allen
+ at first, you didn’t know who this liz character was
+ but one day one of your friends mentioned a liz allen and you had your friend point her out
+ from what you had been reading about your soulmates favorite pastime, you couldn’t help but notice that the slightly older girl fit the bill perfectly
+ but you convinced yourself otherwise
+ liz is a popular name
+ allen is a pretty common last name
+even still, you started to put on makeup to cover up the words that would wrap around your wrist and betray you
+ of course, it wasn’t always liz that your soulmate was thinking about
+ a lot of the time it was his uncle or aunt
+ and then it transitioned into spiderman
+ you knew this because you still looked at your tattoo
+ you only covered it up at school where someone might notice that your soulmate had eyes for another
+ every thought of every day (besides liz) was spiderman
+ you didn’t think much of it
+ by this time you were used to your soulmate thinking of other things besides you
+ and one time, you actually got to see spiderman in the act of saving someone
+ and from that moment on, peters wrist was often occupied with ‘spiderman’
+ thoughts of liz being his soulmate had died long ago when he had gotten close enough to see that her wrist had said ‘going vegan was the best idea ever, soulmate!’
+ he knew that plenty of people talked to their soulmates through their wrist, and peter had never gotten an invitation to go vegan
+ so when he saw that his tattoo was talking about spiderman, he flipped out
+ he told ned, and during p.e. they would have peter think ‘what would tony stark look like with long hair’ so that they could check everyone’s wrist
+ however, you had lunch during that time and found it very odd that your soulmate thought of avengers with interesting haircuts
+ but it made you laugh, and peters wrist would be branded with the words ‘my soulmate is the best’
+ this happened all year, and it wasn’t until the summer when you would finally meet
+ peter was just about to settle down for the night after saving queens when you looked at his wrist and noticed that it talked about a tiny bookstore on the corner of his street and an author with a very odd last name
+ still on a high from saving the world, peter jumped up immediately and headed towards the store that was about to close
+ you bumped into him while you both made your way in, but neither of you thought much of it
+ you recognized peter from school although he had no idea who you wee
+ peter apologized profusely as he helped you off the ground
+ you blushed a bit and told him it was fine
+ peter went to the back of the store
+ you stayed at the front
+ peter looked down at his wrist and saw ‘peter is really cute up close’
+ you looked down at your wrist and saw ‘she was thinking about this store’
+ the two of you started to walk towards each other and met by the fiction section
+ “Hey…again.”
+ “Hey, Peter. I, uh…well, I… I’m (Your Full Name).”
+ peter was obviously shaking as he pulled him his sleeve and he showed you the two words on his wrist ‘peter parker’
+ you looked down at your wrist and held it up for him to see
+ ‘(Your Full Name)’
