white water raft

Arizona’s Grand Canyon is a natural formation distinguished by its layered bands of red rock and its vast scale, averaging 10 miles across and a mile deep along its 277-mile length. Much of the area is a national park. With sweeping vistas, it’s a destination for hiking, mule rides, camping and aerial tours, plus white-water rafting on the Colorado River.

Did I ever tell y'all about my sophomore year at NYU and how my white friends wanted to go white water rafting for Spring Break and I was like “hell nawl”? They kept tryna convince me and I was like “NO” and when they wouldn’t quit, i decided to make them feel awkward by saying “the last time y'all tricked my people onto a boat, it didn’t end well”.

They didn’t ask again.

anonymous asked:

I was really struck by something I read in one of your earlier replies to an ask, which was "we’ll never know what Rachel would have done after the war ended", and I wondered if perhaps you may actually have some thought about what might have happened if she did? How WOULD Rachel, who thrived in war, adapt to the mundane life after?

After a while Rachel’s aunt and uncle get so used to her stopping by that they just make her a copy of their house key; it’s easier than answering the door all the time or leaving a window open for her, besides which they’re grateful because she’s there almost every day to bully Jake out of bed and into the world to go do something.  Most days it’s just attending Habitat for Humanity builds in the devastated areas downtown or visiting kids from the local hospital who idolize them both.  Rachel doesn’t mind dragging Jake out of his room at all, because while Tobias is good for taking random college classes or exploring new parts of the country with her, there are still plenty of stupid things that she can only talk Jake into doing.  Together they surf during hurricanes, skydive without parachutes, swim to the bottom of the ocean as orcas and throw themselves off cliffs as birds of prey.

Rachel doesn’t pretend to understand what he’s going through, because she quite simply can’t—if she even tries to think about what it would be like if it was Jordan or Sarah she’d had to kill during that last battle, she tends to lose the ability to breathe.  But while she can’t give him empathy she can give him this: the scream of wind rushing past their bodies as they hurl toward the ground at nearly a hundred miles an hour, the incomparable thrill of the ground approaching them faster than an oncoming train, the moment of simple euphoria during that millisecond decision to once again open one’s wings and tell death not today.  He doesn’t smile much, and never laughs, but that’s always been true to some extent.  She doesn’t concern herself with making him smile, but with forcing him to gasp for air in his refusal to give up on life, to morph when not doing so would mean drowning in the cold Pacific, to swerve a second away from spattering on the ground.  Because she’s the only one who understands the power of those moments to make them forget everything in the world except the heady rush of being so goddamn alive they can barely even stand it.

It’s strange, really, how tough and showy they can be around each other most of the time… and how vulnerable they can become when no one else is around.  Rachel’s pretty sure she’s the only one who ever saw Marco cry after they all watched Eva’s body tumble hundreds of yards to its apparent death, and she knows for certain that she’s the only one to whom he says “it’s like we never really got her back at all,” the day his parents announce their divorce.  In public Rachel and Marco become even more themselves, one-upping each other to see who can come out with the most embarrassing story in round after round of interviews and bantering at lightning speed as live studio audiences laugh and cheer.  Rachel gives a hysterical, exaggerated account of Marco’s failed attempt at gatecrashing William Roger Tennant’s award banquet; Marco comes back with a heroic narrative of how his llama-self saved an entire television studio from the crocodile Rachel conveniently forgot to mention she had puked out backstage.  When talking about the time Helmacrons invaded Marco’s nose, they each manage to make the whole mess entirely into the other one’s fault.

In private, they sit on the back porch of Marco’s primary house once a week and work their way through a bottle of triple sec they’re definitely too young to own.  It’s during those long evenings as the sun sets over the Newport Beach mansions that they air the things to each other they’ve never told a living soul before.  Marco talks about the hard bright-edged joy of watching 17,000 yeerks sucked into space and only being able to imagine their screams.  Rachel confesses to having cried herself to sleep after she and Ax dropped David on that island.  They air their sickest thoughts, lance their most pus-rotted wounds, spew poison at each other because they know that they are both strong enough (hard enough, cold enough, ruthless enough) to take it and give back in turn.

Rachel’s honestly not sure how far Cassie would have gotten, politically, if not for her help.  Because that girl might have passion and conscience and common sense to spare, but Rachel’s not sure she’s met a more appearance-clueless person in her life.  The world of politics runs on fashion and makeup, though, especially if one happens to be a woman, and any time Cassie’s about to go tell the United Nations why they need to update the Universal Declaration of Human Rights today to include the hork-bajir and taxxons, or to scold Congress into giving the ex-hosts war reparations and not murder charges, Rachel is there in the background helping.  She shows Cassie the power of stalking into a room in a pair of towering heels, the ways to make a string of pearls or a Chanel handbag into a weapon of power.  Cassie laughs incredulously every time Rachel shows up at her house with a literal truckload of perfectly-tailored business suits and evening gowns, but over time she starts to understand just how much her reputation for being as elegant as she is fierce can work in her favor.

Rachel, in turn, starts to put out patents for the kind of clothes Cassie would love: comfortable and practical items that can be worn for years without needing replacement.  Rachel figures that if she’s an international trendsetter already (and she is: her line of perfume makes millions every year, while black leotards are debuting on Paris runways) then she might as well have her best friend and the world of high fashion meet in the middle.  Of course Rachel doesn’t explicitly mention that her patent-leather pumps with arch support and heel padding are inspired by the experience of trying on Cassie’s Timberlands, or that her choice of size-16 models for all her advertisements comes from making dresses that would fit Cassie and sizing up or down from there.  But what’s most amazing to her is that the other dressmakers and shoe lines start to emulate her choices, emphasizing the comfort and sturdiness of everything they make even as they tout it as “cutting edge.”  If Rachel has dragged Cassie into being a fashion icon, then it turns out Cassie might just have dragged Rachel into being a social justice warrior along the way.

Ax seems somewhat dumbfounded when Rachel explains that there’s an Earth tradition that any ship’s captain can perform a marriage ceremony, and that even if there’s no law on the books about this particular power she wants him to do it anyway.  She’s not sure herself how her and Tobias’s small private ceremony (at least, that was the intention) has grown so much, but even she has to admit that somewhere between the 230-person guest list, the custom chuppah to be hand-embroidered by a team of local artists, the five-tier cake imported from a German bakery, and the dress which is personally designed by Alexander McQueen, things might have gotten slightly out of hand.  Ax takes the duties very seriously, practicing the strange mouth sounds he has to recite more than once in advance and promising solemnly that he will not eat any of the cake until Rachel and Tobias have had the chance to cut it.

He serves as their best man as well (probably breaking with tradition, not that they care) and the speech he makes afterward is surprisingly heartfelt.  «There has been no greater honor in my life than to fight by your side,» he tells them, «and I owe you both my life many times over.  I owe you more than that, of course, for you have made this strange planet my home when I came to you lost and alone.  I am not sure what humans traditionally wish for each other with a bond such as this, so I will wish you this much: may your lives be long, may your battles be easily won, may you be loved and feared in equal measure, and may your chili always be perfectly seasoned.»

It’s not like they get jobs, or hold down formal obligations, or do anything more structured than attend occasional classes at UCSB or consult with the fashion agency that sends Rachel freelance checks.  So there’s really no reason they can’t continue their odd lifestyle, only in the same form at the same time for two hours at most.  At least, that’s how it is for the first several years… and then one day Rachel comes out of the bathroom, a tiny white stick in her hand, and they both realize their lives are never going to be the same again.  Tobias is terrified, of course: he’s been abandoned (voluntarily or not) by two parents, four guardians, and countless authority figures, and he’s got no reason to believe he’ll be any different.  But he knows what the first step will be in committing to raising this baby for real.  And so he morphs human for the very last time.

In the years that follow, after their daughter eventually gets a little brother as well, Rachel and Tobias become more boring than they ever could have hoped for.  Rachel starts working full-time as a fashion designer, while Tobias finishes an advanced degree in graphic design and gets a job with the marketing branch of the same company.  They go to PTA meetings and teach their daughter softball, buy a sedan with good gas mileage and a two-story house in Mendocino County where the reporters can’t find them.  They still get restless sometimes, leaving the kids with Loren or Sarah for a week or two at a time to go white-water rafting on the Colorado River or to climb mountains in Tanzania, but they always miss the kids enough to come home before long.  They donate thousands of dollars to end world hunger every year, and they fundraise millions more.  Someday they’ll retire.  Someday after that they’ll die.  For now, however, they’re alive, and that’s enough.

Profile Improvement

Hey sugars, a lovely lady here asked me if I could help her with her profile. It’s the only one I’m going to do though, I would if I could but it takes some time. I made sure to keep her points but just refine it a bit. Her’s was really well done, I just did some fixes. :)

I made sure to play to her strengths and even highlight her milk-chocolate goodness (tropical, exotic..). I hope this helps some.

A queen who wants to be treated properly by a king.I would describe myself as a slender, curvy, ambitious, soft-hearted woman. *I emit a soft glow.* I love moonlight, good food, and things that sparkle. I love to laugh, so if you have a sense of humour we will get along well! I’ve been told my pictures don’t do me justice. You will have to let me know if that is true when we meet.My life goal is to be a positive force for change in the world. I am ambitious and I need to be, I’ve got a world to change.I can’t wait to meet my next benefactor.

I am seeking a gentleman. Someone honest, direct, and kind. I’d like to meet someone who is wise and generous and willing to share some of that wisdom with me. I want someone who’s company I can enjoy, who simply has the means and desire to support me, spoil me, and guide me. I’m not looking to play games. Treat me respectfully and I will do the same for you.We are both here for a reason. You want companionship and to help someone, I want financial support and great memories. This isn’t all about money for me, but please do not insult me by pretending it isn’t part of the arrangement. If you are looking for intimacy before an arrangement, you are on the wrong website. I do not get intimate with anyone until I am certain they will keep me comfortable both financially and physically. If you can exceed my expectations I will certainly exceed yours.

“Let me bring light, back into your life

I am a slender but curvaceous, ambitious, and soft-hearted lady with a tropical, exotic flair. Moonlight, delicious food and shiny things bring out the best in me. I am a comic, and I know laughter is the best medicine, so if you have a great sense of humor, I’m certain we’ll get along just fine–don’t sigh too loudly at my corny jokes. Something many can attest to, is the radiance and glow that often follow me, my pictures do not do me justice. I’m sure you’ll tell me the same as we white-water raft, climb Mount Everest, or have a nice bite to eat on our first date.I am a force to be reckoned with, but emit only positivity–something I’d love to see in the world. I am ambitious and I need to be- I’ve got a world to change.I can’t wait to meet my next benefactor.”

Country: USA

Hey everyone! I’m Alexandra but I go by Ola. I’m currently awaiting my high school graduation and will be studying to become a nurse in the fall. However, my school stuff is the least interesting part about me.

I am 100% Polish, so I am able to communicate fluently if anyone from Poland would like an American pen pal. Traveling is my passion and I have many trips planned out already for the upcoming years. I have had many fun adventures in my travels, from free falling from 90 ft to white water rafting down the Hudson River, I’ve done quiet a bit.

My friends all tell me I’m the energy in a room since I’m very energetic and always happy.

My ideal pen pal would be someone open to discuss music, books, travel, or any topic in the whole wide world. I love talking and expressing my ideas so I would truly love a pen pal.

Preferences: Prefer someone in college or high school so there’s a similarity in age, and prefer e-mailing (as much as I love snail mail too).

Dates with Connor Quick HCs (Connor Murphy x Reader)

I’m got bored sitting in my school parking lot and then again during flex time so here you go:

Connor is really inventive when it comes to planning dates for the two of you.

He’s the type to want to try something new each time, not just for the fun of it, but because he wants to experience all new parts of life that he can with you.

One of his favorites is taking you to explore abandoned places, even if it is highly illegal.

They mostly change each time as he finds new places- an abandoned jewelry factory, or an old cabin long forgotten in the woods.

BUT he has this one abandoned mall in the middle of nowhere that he had frequented before you started dating. But now, he likes to drive you both over there just for fun (if he didn’t find anything new to do that day).

The roof of the mall is great for stargazing (you two also went there for the solar eclipse). He sets up a picnic blanket or two on the roof, lining around it with pillows. He also brings a record player which he plays when you two have dates there.

For your anniversary, he took you up there. There are remains of small towers on the roof, so he looped fairy lights over them, creating a sea of flickering lights above your heads as you laid down on the blanket, listening to vinyls playing and talking about anything and everything. He brought your favorite foods too, as well as the stereotypical chocolate covered strawberries. He also lined the edge of the roof with candles, and had flowers laid around everywhere. You still have a few of those dried flowers hanging in your room. Kissing him softly under the lights and the stars is one of your favorite memories.

On lazier days, Connor just hangs out in his room with you. He reads to you (or with you) from one of his latest book choices (I HC that Connor loves literature). You could listen to him talk for hours on end.

If it’s a rainy day, the Murphy house has a small corner that is surrounded by windows in one of the spare rooms. It has a small couch and blankets, and you and Connor cuddle there, you listening to his heartbeat as he reads to you.

So! Much! Neck! Kissing! From! Connor! When! You! Cuddle! On! These! Dates!

But back to adventurous dates! He likes to take you hiking around the mountains if he knows there’s a chance that you’ll find remnants of an old water tower or something.

His phone lock screen is you standing on the edge of said water tower, smiling vibrantly, looking out at the setting sun and the orange horizon. (Whenever he’s having a tough day he looks at it).

He also took you white water rafting once in Maine. This was over the winter school break, and it took a long time to drive there, AND was cold as hell, but it was worth it. He dragged you to the beach after, even though it was still freezing. He found you a sand dollar though- you keep it on your nightstand. You two managed to find a seafood restaurant that was miraculously open once Connor realized you were both going to get hypothermia by being on the beach too long. You were very fond of this date in particular.

He likes to bring you over to his house to cook with him as well. Cynthia always smiles brightly at you when she sees you and Connor baking anything (he’s particularly fond of cupcakes because he can wipe the frosting in your nose), since she’s just happy he found someone that made him smile again. You two embarrassingly eat most of whatever you make, which is why you don’t bake that often.

He has this one rope swing in his backyard he sits on with you if he’s having a bad day- both the view of the neighborhood from the top of the hill and your voice relaxing him. He loves you so much!

He’s so pure I love him so much ahh!

Rami & Characters as Parents:

It’s your children before absolutely anyone else.

He never takes roles if it means leaving your family for too long a period of time.

“Rami we can relocate if-“
“Absolutely not. I’m not uprooting their lives for some role.”

He spoils them rotten, but never lets them forget his humble beginnings and the importance of gratitude and appreciation.

He tries to keep them out of the spotlight, but feels tremendous pride when the paparazzi snap pictures of him doing everyday things with your kids.

He also finds said pictures online and saves them because he loves them so much.

He’s very conscious of online safety, much to the irritation of your kids.
“You should change your password every two weeks, there are so many dangers-“
“Dad, it’s just a club penguin account.”

Your kids love to tease him about his past roles.

“Be sensible at the party tonight, don’t drink too much and don’t do drugs, please.”

“What, not even morphine? Or a little J? C’mon dad what would Elliot think?”

“You’re grounded.”

“Dad I can’t believe you were in a Twilight movie.”

“God, you’ve done some digging…”

He loves when your kids make up little productions together and perform them in the living room for the two of you. Even if the plot isn’t particularly good, his face glows with pride as he watches his children perfect his craft.

He may or may not have had a large platform built in the yard so that in the summer the kids can put on performances while the two of you sit on the lawn chairs enjoying the sun.

Josh is the ‘cool’ dad. Or at least he thinks he is.

He picks your kids up from school in his flashy car with his sunglasses on.
“Hey pornstars! Hop in!”
“Dad that’s super weird please stop.”

He loves to organize unusual holidays and expand your kids’ horizons, but he sometimes goes a little overboard.
“Safari vacation this summer? We can ditch the car and run with the lions!”
“Josh, I’d like to return with all our limbs.”
“Ok well what about storm chasing-“
“White water raft-“
“Josh, I love you, but shut the fuck up.”

Josh encourages your children to follow their dreams and pursue their ideas, whether it’s as small as your five-year-old son’s lemonade stand or as big as your daughter’s fundraiser for mental health centre for young people.

When Josh’s depression creeps out from the shadows he fears that he’s not a good enough father, but your children always seem to sense his insecurity and reassure him with hugs and movie nights.

Your children are what gave Josh the confidence to visit his sister’s graves. With them by his side, he feels unstoppable.

Snafu is the king of pretend games. He’ll use whatever he can find around the house to set the scene for the game.

In fact its a struggle to get him to stop playing.

“Wench, fetch me my dinner!” Snafu orders you while wearing a crudely fashioned cardboard crown. You roll your eyes but comply, placing his plate in front of him. Your son watches the interaction with a sparkle in his eye.

“Wench, fetch-”

“Don’t even try it kid.”

“Sorry mom.”

Your kids never get tired of sitting by the fire with their father and listening to his stories about the war. He tells them of his comrades, his injuries, his brushes with death, but his favourite memories to recount are those of your reunions with him when he came home from battle.

Snafu is careful to remind his kids to always treat their love interests with respect, especially your sons. He tells them how you taught him the hard way about how to treat a lady, and that a respectful compliment or simply holding the door will go further than any cat call or crude pet name.

He misses the thrill of going off to war and the adrenaline rush fighting gave him, but Snafu would never again risk his life, for his responsibility as a father was far more important to him than his responsibility for his country.

In lieu of returning to the battlefields, Snafu teaches your children all he knows about hand to hand combat and survival in some of the toughest terrains. He never lets them forget that behind the sensational stories of heroism and bravado, was a terrifying reality that few survived.

Ahkmenrah is a big softie around his kids. He lets them try on his crown and heavy jewellery, he lets them sit on the throne and he lets them play wherever they want in the palace, but screw with his family, and you will know the meaning of the word fear.

He can be strict, since he is the king and his heirs have a reputation to uphold, but away from the public eye he is just like any other father. He enjoys playing games and sometimes is just as childish as the kids.

Ahk is a man of the people, and although your children often see his parents and his brother’s side of the family treating their servants and subordinates in a lowly manner, he will not accept such behaviour from his own kids. He is careful to teach them that although they are royalty, all lives are equal and one should treat others how they wish to be treated.

Your children are brought up unrestricted in who they are allowed to be friends with. You and Ahk are firm believers that class does not matter where friendship is involved. This means that your kids are far more worldly than their higher class peers.

As your children grow older, Ahkmenrah is enthusiastic to involve them in royal affairs. He explains the art of negotiation and that peace is far more favourable than war. He makes certain they know that other nations have many things to offer and it is in their best interests as potential future rulers to stay on good terms with them.

But Ahk will never let his children become naive, they know exactly how to wage a war that they will undoubtedly win. Because they know that one day they may have to teach someone the meaning of the word fear.

The Green River is a 105 km river located in Washington, USA. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery and attracts many visitors who enjoy visiting the river to white water raft down the river to catch a glimpse of the waterfalls and cliffs along the river. A more sinister fact about the Green River is that it is known to be a popular area for people to dump dead bodies - the most infamous killer to do so was Gary Ridgway, the Green River Killer, who confessed to brutally murdering at least 71 women throughout the 1980′s and 1990′s; dumping many of the bodies in and around the Green River after raping and killing them. Other killers have followed in his footsteps - in May of 2015, a woman’s body was discovered inside a suitcase beside the Green River and in July of 2015, a deceased male was pulled out from the Green River. There have been many more bodies dumped in and around the river but the two aforementioned ones are the most recent.

Got any sweet fluffy headcanons about the lovebirds that are robin and starfire?

  • They are constantly trying out new things.  One of main defining factors of their relationship is how much Robin enjoys showing her things about Earth and how wondrous she finds everything, so whenever he finds something that he thinks might be cool or Starfire expresses an interest in something they both jump right on it.
  • They’ve had some killer dates this way.
  • One time they went white-water rafting.  They both wound up soaked and Starfire laughed so hard she couldn’t breathe.
  • Starfire sometimes forgets to turn off her language absorption when she’s kissing Robin and so she’s accidentally gotten snatches of all the languages he knows here and there.
  • She’ll surprise him by whispering a foreign endearment in his ear.
  • Speaking of languages though, Robin thinks Starfire speaking Tamaranian is ridiculously sexy.
  • Also attractive: when she punts villains through walls.  He has been known to get a little distracted and dreamy-eyed during fights on rare occasions.
  • ‘course he’s always subtly keeping his eye on her and making sure she’s okay anyway.
  • She’s also been known to “hover” around him.
  • Everyone on the Titans ships it.  Everyone.
  • There was in fact a betting pool going around about just when they would finally get together.  Cyborg was the broker.  He made bank when they finally kissed in Tokyo.
  • Speedy and Aqualad are both still sore about it because they thought Robin would never man up enough to ask her out.
  • Starfire gets irrationally upset whenever she sees sordid tabloid headlines about him.
  • “But Robin, they are besmirching your honor with their vile and untrue words!”
  • It’s flattering but he wishes she wouldn’t hover outside the publishing houses demanding the authors step forth to fight her in a dual.
  • Robin, likewise, hates when people badmouth Starfire.
  • He punched a kid in the face because he heard him call her a slut under his breath.
  • Got sued, settled out of court.  Bruce called up, annoyed and asking for an explanation and all Robin said was, “Worth it.”
  • Robin makes sure to buy her favorite juice whenever they’re doing grocery shopping, because she commented once that a certain flavor blend reminded her of Tamaran.
  • After “Haunted” she waits up for him whenever he’s out on patrol, and doesn’t go to bed until he returns.
  • She often goes to Raven for advice about him.
  • “Oh my Azar, Starfire, just because I was in his head once doesn’t mean I can make him be less of a dunderhead.”
  • “Just go hug him.  He loves that.”
  • (He does.)
  • They held hands constantly right after Tokyo.
  • Robin loves to pepper her with kisses.  She giggles very cutely.
  • Starfire starts learning more Earth recipes for him.
  • She’s terrible at it at first, and often has to call Cyborg, weeping because the noodles are too soggy and the spices don’t taste right and everything is on fire.  Cyborg always calms her down and helps her out, and never takes credit for it when Starfire presents the results to Robin.
  • Silkie doesn’t take well to Robin at first.
  • Was very protective of his mistress and never wanted them to be alone together without him for a while.
  • Robin won him over with a couple strips of bacon, which Silkie enjoyed surprisingly much, and now the grub purrs happily for him.
  • Starfire will sometimes make him coffee in the morning.
  • They usually sit together for meals.
  • Robin was the first one to fall in love with her.
  • Boys had crushed on her in the past, back on Tamaran, but no one ever seriously pursued any interest in her, preferring her sister.
  • Did not help that Galfore was very protective and also there were strict rules for how people could approach and interact with her.
  • Starfire still loves watching fireworks with him.
