which is why i slack on making things for this show

things I love about Steve Trevor
  • He makes sure he actually thanks Diana for pulling him out of the water
  • The only time he ever expresses doubt to Diana about any of her beliefs is when he’s trying to convince her not to jeopardize the mission by killing Ludendorff, and even then it’s a hypothetical (“what if”)
    • He also does after she kills Ludendorff but that’s after her belief is shattered so I don’t really count it
  • He is so duty-bound I love him so much no wonder he and Diana got along so well
  • He just. Wants the people around him to be happy? The scene after they rescue Veld always kills me, and two parts in particular:
    • When Charlie starts playing piano and singing and Steve says “I haven’t heard him sing in years…” and his face is all soft and you can see the shadow of a smile tugging at his lips but you can also see all the sadness in his eyes from those years of him not singing
    • And when he’s dancing with Diana and it starts to snow and she looks up and is so confused and delighted and he’s like “it’s snow… go on, touch it” and she does (also she has to let go of his hand to do it and he still encourages her to? such a small thing but oh man my heart) and he looks at her with such heart eyes
    • Honestly Chris Pine played him so well, so much complex emotion depicted even when he’s not speaking, like jfc well done
  • I love the boat scene, partly because it’s just fucking hilarious but mostly because their conversation is so respectful. She tells him she was sculpted from clay and brought to life by the breath of Zeus and his reaction is just to raise his eyebrows and say “Well, that’s neat.”
    • I know that could read as sarcastic but it doesn’t to me at all. It’s funny, sure, but he isn’t making fun of her. It’s genuine and kind, even when what she’s saying is fairly unbelievable.
    • Just the entire way they speak in this scene… He never adopts that Mansplaining Tone™ that is so common, even when he’s actually explaining things. He talks because he wants to share information. It’s a cultural exchange, and I loved it.
  • After Veld, when they’re sitting and watching the villagers dance, he just quietly says, “You did this.” and she’s the one who smiles at him and says, “We did this.” He has so much respect for her and it kills me inside because it’s not “We did this” originally (which could be him pointing out that they’re a good team, him saying they have things in common, or a thousand other things), it’s just “You did this,” because he just wants her happy. He wants her to recognize how goddamn impressive she is. There is no agenda to what he said and it fucks me up
  • The entire scene with the kiss. Like, I’m gay as hell, usually I hate this kind of thing because it feels so unnecessary, but this was so well done I’m genuinely glad it was included
    • When he escorts her up to a room he then starts to leave. Even with all of that tension he doesn’t want to assume that she wants anything to happen.
    • So he has his hand on the door and he starts to back out of the room and he hesitates just long enough for her to turn around and meet his gaze. And even then he’s reading that as a sign that she wants him in the room so he steps forward and closes the door behind her and then looks up again to confirm that’s what she wanted. And even after that, he crosses over to her so slowly and lets her be the one to actually initiate the kiss.
    • He gives her a thousand and one chances to change her mind, to give him a small indication that she’s uncomfortable or doesn’t want it to happen, and it’s only once she lets all of those chances pass that they kiss.
    • Consent-based relationships, man. Fuck me up.
  • Speaking of consent… the scene after Diana returns to Veld and sees the gas has killed everyone fucks me up
    • Steve’s followed her there and is clearly freaked the fuck out because she’s just gone and he physically can’t go in to try to find her because of the gas
    • So when she comes out he’s so visibly relieved and he goes forward and puts his hands around her face, clearly wanting to kiss her, and she shoves him away and says “stay away from me.” and he does.
    • He lets her be furious and devastated and overwhelmed because he knows what it’s like to feel powerless and I think he is genuinely sorry he contributed to her feeling this much pain. He lets her say she’s angry, he lets her blame him, he lets her grieve and doesn’t stop her when she leaves him there.
    • Not only does he not stop her, he sees the smoke from Chief’s fire and yells to her to follow it because he had followed Ludendorff. Their argument from the ballroom still isn’t resolved - she wants to just kill him and be done with it, Steve wants that to wait so they can focus on stopping the gas - but he recognizes that this is her choice and even after she’s basically just blamed an entire village’s deaths on him (and on herself) he tries to help her carry it out.
  • So after Diana’s killed Ludendorff and the war is still going on and Steve runs up to find her, he’s so visibly relieved that she’s alive and (like after Veld) goes to kiss her but backs away without her doing anything because he realizes the “stay away from me” thing has never been explicitly lifted. She might still want nothing to do with him and he respects that.
    • He does touch her a couple times after this but it’s always brief, I think it continues only because she didn’t react negatively the first time, and like they’re in the middle of a fucking war and I think Steve’s about 900% convinced that they’re all going to die so I’m gonna cut him a little slack here.
  • They have that “argument” again, where Diana says “this should have stopped, I killed him, why is this still going on” and instead of saying I told you so Steve just tries to get her to move on and help him save other people.
    • When he says “maybe it’s us! maybe we’re to blame!” (meaning not Ares) and she says that (obviously) she isn’t to blame, he doesn’t hesitate, he just says “but maybe I am.” He’s willing to put that on himself. Also, the qualifier through this scene - but maybe it’s us - is so important to me, because he’s still not saying “you’re wrong.” it’s a maybe.
    • When she refuses to go with him he’s clearly frustrated (again I’m giving him a pass here because he’s frustrated because he knows he won’t be able to save as many people without her) but he still doesn’t try to force her to go with him. He doesn’t guilt-trip her, doesn’t yell at her for not helping. He just gives that desperate shrug and says “I have to go. I’m sorry, I have to go.”
    • And when Charlie and Sam and Chief show up and ask where Diana is, all he says is “we’re on our own.” Not “she wouldn’t fucking help us” - which frankly is probably what I would have said in this situation - just that statement and nothing more.
  • In their final scene, when she’s hurt and dazed and temporarily hard of hearing, he breaks his “no touching” rule, but he breaks it because he’s helping her stand up and then because, well… even if she doesn’t, he knows he’s never going to see her again.
    • It’s also super important to me that he doesn’t try to kiss her in this scene, because god knows he must have wanted to. He sees that she is in no shape to consent to anything like that and he doesn’t even come close to pushing it.
    • I’m not even gonna get into the “I can save today” part because I’m still too emotionally fraught
    • He says is “I wish we had more time.” before he tells her he loves her and literally runs to his death. That’s it. Nothing that could possibly make her feel guilty, nothing that could have seemed like he regretted anything. Not “I wish we hadn’t gone to the front.” Just “I wish we had more time.”
    • And he then, metaphorically and literally, gives her more time. Because he knows his clock has run out, but that doesn’t mean hers has to… So he runs and saves today and gives her his watch. Gives her time.
  • Anyway I’m seventeen thousand levels of fucked up from this movie, please feel free to add because Steve is amazing and a genuinely good, complex, respectful male character like this should be celebrated

AU where the Justice League forms like usual, except Batman maintained his “totally a myth” status and has in fact been active for years before the JL forms. He’s very cautious about trusting them, but still joins, and the others sort of accepts that as long as they trust that Batman has a really hard time with trust, it will all work out in its own weird way

Then, one day, in the middle of a JL mission, the League gets in a tight spot. Out of nowhere, this blue and black blur swoops in and saves everyone’s ass. Maybe breaking some shackles that were proving very difficult, maybe disarm a bomb that the League was just a hair’s breadth too slow to reach without help, but whatever happens, the shadowy figure pauses just long enough to say, “Hey, Batman, you know you there are these things called cellphones now and you can just call sometimes, it doesn’t have to be this dramatic?” and bounds away after shouting ‘let’s do brunch! Bring your new friends!’

Batman is mortified.

No one lets it go.

The entire rest of the mission, the whole League is asking so many questions. Who was that? Do you know him? How do you know him? What’s going on? I didn’t know there was a vigilante in this area?? They don’t let up until he talks.

“That was Nightwing.” Batman is mumbling. The JL forces him to bring them to the Brunch. Brunch happens to be in a run-down apartment on the edge of a bad neighborhood, at five in the morning, in costume. Nightwing introduces himself as Batman’s lovechild with justice.

“I did not realize Batman had a child,” Martian Manhunter says, calmly enough that no one’s sure if he’s accidentally plucking a really loud thought out of the air or if he’s trying to make a joke.

Nightwing stares for a moment falling over laughing. He doesn’t get up. Batman starts trying to apply anti-Joker venom but Nightwing just kicks him and laughs until he cries. He keeps trying to wipe his eyes and his mask keeps getting in the way, so he asks everyone to leave so he can please get a hold of himself

He is still laughing when they leave. Everyone is confused. Batman is furious.  Nightwing manages to breathe long enough to say, “We’re just so glad you’re socializing now, Batman.”

Superman turns to look at Batman very slowly. “…’we’?”

Eyes like ice, cold and calculating narrow over the rim of a wine glass. Soft lips press to the polished glass, the crimson complimenting tan skin. If it weren’t for the soft dent between his brows you would have assumed he had not heard you. He takes his time allowing the wine to caress his palate, eyes closed as he savors the taste.  As always, he makes you wait until the wine glass is drained of it’s dark contents. You ponder on the taste, if it is bitter upon his tongue much like his words.

Gotg prompt: how did Rocket learn to speak Groot?

“Repeat after me, Quill: I am Groot.”

“I am Groot,” Peter said dutifully. He felt like an idiot, but there were only a limited number of ways to while away quiet nights on the ship when neither of them could sleep. If it was him and Gamora, or him and Drax, they could spar, but he’d only tried sparring with Rocket once. It took weeks for the bite marks to heal.

Rocket’s oddly expressive – for a raccoon – face wrinkled in an expression of disgust. “Do you even hear yourself? That is nothing like what I just said.”

“Dude, that is exactly what you just said.”

“No, I said ‘I am Groot’ and you said ‘I am Groot’.”

“Which is … the same?”

Rocket stared at him for a long moment, then pointed at his snout. “Read my lips: I am Groot.”

“Was I supposed to repeat that, or …”

Rocket showed some teeth. Peter shut up. There was a moment of silence and Peter was just about to put his earbuds back in and quit with the language lessons when Rocket said suddenly, “Quill, if I say, 'I am Groot,’ just like that, what do you hear?”

“Is this a trick question? Especially the kind of trick question that’s gonna end in you pissing on my bed?”

“That was only once, and you had it coming –”

“Rocket –”

“No, for the love o’ cheese, it’s not a trick question. Just say 'I am Groot’.”

“I am Groot,” Peter said. “I feel like a complete jackass right now, in case that was your intent – hey, where are you going?”

“Jus’ need to get a thing!” Rocket’s voice trailed behind him.

Peter flopped back down in the chair in the mess and put his earbuds in. He was actually getting sleepy, and considering going back to bed, when Rocket jumped up onto the table in front of him with something clutched in his paws.

“What’s that?” Peter asked, sitting up. He palmed off the Zune and took off the earpieces. He had to hand it to Earth tech: the new music player was a lot more convenient to carry around than his late, lamented Walkman.

Rocket’s device was a thin, flat screen about the size of a hardback book; he had it clutched with a paw on each side while readouts rippled quickly across it.

“Okay, now say 'I am Groot’,” Rocket declared, studying the screen.

“Come on, man, do we really have to go through this again?”

“Humor me.”

Peter sighed and slouched in his chair. “I am Groot.”

Rocket’s ears pricked forward. “I am Groot,” he said, and tapped the display with his paw, causing the tiny, scrolling lines and numbers to freeze. “Did that sound the same to you?”

“Well … yeah?”

The flat pads of Rocket’s fingers danced across the display, and he laid the screen on the table between them. “Know what you’re lookin’ at?”

“Squiggly lines,” Peter said automatically.

“Did your mama drop you on the head a lot as a baby, Quill?”

“No, but Yondu did occasionally.” Peter rested his elbow on the table and his chin in his hand. As much fun as it was to mess with Rocket, he did actually think he knew what the raccoon was getting at. “That wiggly line is some kind of … uh … noise – wiggle – curve, right?”

“That’s real precise.”

“I was abducted from Earth before we got to algebra in school. Cut me some slack here.”

“Excuses, excuses. I was raised in a cage and my mother had an IQ of 3.” Rocket touched the display, zooming in on it. “Point is, I don’t think it’s just that all a’ you two-legged bunch is too obtuse to understand perfectly clear speech –”

“Thanks.”

“– like I used to think. It’s more like, my ears hear at higher and lower frequencies than yours do, so I get different overtones. Put simply for the simple, I can hear things you can’t.”

Peter leaned forward, intrigued. “So, wait – you mean all this time, all his 'I am Groot’s sound different to you?”

He realized what he’d said as soon as the words left his mouth, and got the flat 'I am dealing with morons’ look from Rocket that he’d instantly realized he had coming. “How am I supposed to understand him if they don’t, Quill, I ask you?”

“Okay – point – but … so why does it sound like 'I am Groot’ to the rest of us?”

“It sounds like 'I am Groot’ to me too.” When Peter glowered at him, Rocket held up a paw. “No, I ain’t messin’ with ya. This time. No, that’s what the translation unit picks up, 'cause it ain’t so smart about some of the less humanoid languages. It’s just, I hear it like …” He hesitated and waggled his paw. “It’s like your music, right? All those up and down tones at the same time. Groot can do that. Your throat, my throat, can’t.”

“Singing?” Peter said after a minute. “Groot’s singing?”

“I refer you back to the part about bein’ dropped on your head.” Rocket pursed his lips and let out a sharp whistle, making Peter jump – there was still some part of him that couldn’t quite hear whistling and not expect a death arrow to follow an instant later. And he might not be the only one, because Rocket stopped abruptly, closed his mouth, and then said, “Quill, do this,” and hummed softly.

It wasn’t really a tune. “You just want me to hum?” Peter asked. “Like, generic humming?”

Rocket curled his lip and the hum became more of a snarl.

“Right, humming,” Peter said hastily.

The funny thing was, the instant his soft hum of response hit the right harmonics with the note Rocket was humming (and the raccoon did have a good sense of pitch; Peter had always suspected so) he understood exactly what Rocket was getting at.

“Ohhhhh. When Groot talks, it’s like a symphony. Is that what you mean? And the 'I am Groot’ part is the part in the human audible range.”

Rocket’s ears and tail went up cheerfully. “Yeah, ezzactly. He’s tryin’ to communicate, it’s just he didn’t get any farther than 'I am Groot’ when he was learning. It’s as hard for him to do the talkin’ part for the translators as it is for you and me to do his kind of talk. He can hear us just fine, though. Actually to him, understanding our talk is dead easy.”

“So how do we understand him?” Peter asked. “Can you, I dunno, juice up the translator so it picks up a higher range of frequencies, or something?”

“I dunno. That’s not a bad idea.” Rocket tapped his claw against his teeth before picking up the screen thing and hopping off the table. “Have to think on it. Don’t wanna explode your heads or anything.”

“Yeah, well, on that lovely note, I’m goin’ to bed.” He actually was tired enough now to fall asleep in spite of the inevitable nightmares (the bitter cold and darkness of space; Ego’s face dissolving in his hands; his friends crushed by rocks or blown apart). The music helped as it always had, a melodic bulwark against the dark, wrapped gently around his heart – but it could only do so much.

Rocket grunted absently as he trotted off, already engrossed in figuring out the problem.

The thought occurred to Peter as he wandered back to his quarters, thumbing idly through the songs on the Zune, that these sorts of mechanical puzzles served the same purpose for Rocket as his music did for him: something to make his mind go quiet.

The music did that … and so did letting Gamora beat the stuffing out of him in the ship’s small exercise area. Or getting language lessons from Rocket. Or –

“I am Groot?”

Peter jumped as small hands grabbed hold of his pants leg. Groot shimmied quickly up to perch on his shoulder.

“Hey, little buddy.” Peter opened the door to his quarters and left it open so Groot could come and go as he wanted. Or so he could hear if anybody got into a fight or whatever. He flopped wearily on his unmade bed, careful not to dislodge Groot. “You know, I’m not sure how much of this you can understand right now, but Rocket’s teaching me to speak your language.”

“I am Groot?”

“Well, to understand you more than speak it, I guess I should say.” He was lying on his back now and he couldn’t really see Groot except out of the corner of his eye, but he could feel the little tree shifting around in the hollow where the collar of his sweatshirt rested against his neck.

“I am Groot,” Groot said insistently, almost in his ear. Small hands patted at the side of his face and his earlobe.

“Yeah, yeah.” Peter pinched one earbud between two fingers and held it where Groot could get at it. The little hands took it out of his fingers. Peter settled himself comfortably as Groot squirmed somewhat ticklishly against his neck, and sorted through the songs. “How 'bout Elton John tonight, buddy?”

“I am Groot,” came the sleepy answer.

“You know, little guy,” Peter murmured, as the first strains of the music began to play and Groot snuggled comfortably against his neck, “whether or not Rocket can get his new gadget working, I think we understand each other just fine, don’t we?”

“I am Groot!”

Words: 4.1k
Note: Wrote all this Jungkook’s cover, Beautiful, a Goblin OST is on replay.

Concept: Every time you meet your soulmate, your pocket watch will start counting down the time you have with them until you part. For the amount of time you’re away from each other, whether it’s a month, a day, or just hours, the time is at a pause as your watch stares back at you with unmoving hands on the 12th hour. When you meet again, the countdown restarts.

Summary: Your watch comes alive in Jungkook’s presence, but often time, never as long as you will it to be no matter how hard you pray to the fates. The moments with him are fleeting and brief like the akin-to magical seconds you spend watching the cityscape buzz to life on nights you can’t sleep - nights Jungkook isn’t there to kiss your worries away and disappear like the wind blowing through cities at the break of dawn. When your the hands on your watch stills with glaring zeroes, you know where he’s at, you know who he’s with - he goes back to her, the woman who his time starts and ends with.

Dude, requests are back up, awesome! How about DAI companions + Krem de la creme reacting to the inquisitor being one of the last avian folk?(Like, they have big ass wings, so they always wear an even bigger cloak to hide them, and during battle somehow, they end up losing the cloak? They can legit fly with them)

Cassandra: She stares and stares before angrily demanding to know why they hid this from her. They sheepishly explain their situation, and she calms down, but it doesn’t change the fact they hid it. When she eventually gets over it, she sometimes just sits and watches them fly around (which they do for fun; they’re actually sort of relieved to be revealed for this reason). It makes her nervous, at first, worrying they’ll suddenly drop, but she’s awed by how agile and graceful they are in the sky. Once or twice, they have to pick her up and drop her somewhere else, and it makes her nervous every time they pick her up, and she hates how helpless she feels suspended in the air. If Romanced: Sometimes he takes her flying for no reason other than a good time. She likes it significantly more than non-romanced flying. Eventually, they’ll land, and have a quiet, serene place to sit together while she listens to him recite poetry.

Blackwall: He stares. That’s all he can do as he gawks with a slack jaw for a long time. He has no words– trying for speech just results in helpless sputtering. The man stands aside as the others fuss and try to make sense of the situation, and speaks last. He gets over it, though, once he hears the story, and doesn’t mind at all. “They’re like a pair of griffon wings,” he admires, “powerful and fast.” If the Herald can lift him up, it makes him supremely uncomfortable the first time they take him into the sky, but he finds that he thinks it’s fun. If Romanced: He regularly compliments her on how beautiful her wings are, and he tries to help itch and clean the spots she can’t reach easily. He brings her flowers that grow all the way up on a mountainside, and she gently teases him and says she could just fly him up there. “No, my lady,” he refuses, “it’s not the same if all the work’s taken out of it. You shouldn’t waste your time helping me get you flowers; let me do the work.”

Iron Bull: After getting past the initial shock, he’s utterly green with envy. It looks like SO MUCH FUN, taking off like a dragon to the skies. The Herald tries to pick him up (to no avail, he’s too heavy) to give him the experience of flying, so he takes it upon himself to make them stronger and faster, so they can. Push-ups with wings, laps around Skyhold, timing their speed of flight, you name it. “Just wait. You’ll go back to your people and fly circles around them! When you can finally lift me up, you can air-drop me on the enemies for an attack from above! It’s gonna be great!” If romanced: Hot. He’s 100% into this. He snickers if any feathers get ruffled or fall off after sex. “Did I ruffle your feathers, Kadan?” he teases, and he just laughs as they slap him with a wing. He ties one of the feathers that fall off to the dragontooth necklace, as long as they don’t mind.

Sera: She’s freaked out and utterly shocked. She has no idea how to react, so she just stares for a long time, sputtering helplessly. She feels bad later at how upset they seemed at her facial expression. “Aw, shite… well, your feathery ass is welcome here, alright?” she reassures. She likes tossing things at them when they’re flying to see if they can catch it, and it becomes a sort of game/exercise routine. She also talks them into using their wings to prank others. She screams the first time they pick her up and take her into the sky, but soon she realizes she likes it, so long as she trusts the Herald. Sometimes she’ll ask to be taken with them, because she thinks it’s exhilarating– and a few times, shoots arrows at people from above while the Herald carries her. “Death from above! Arrows from the sky! I even have a source of feathers for fletching at any moment! Hah!” A few times, if she needs them, she’ll just pluck a feather clean off if there’s none lying around, and sticks her tongue out as the Herald protests. “What? You still got a lot of ‘em. Your wings are huge!” Also jokingly refers to wings/feathers sticking out as “wingboners.” If Romanced: She likes tickling her wings and playing with her feathers, and sleeping under a wing when they’re in bed together. “They’re soft. And fuzzy. And cute.” she gushes. She also learns how to preen the feathers, and takes to doing so regularly out of affection, at least in the areas her girlfriend can’t reach with ease. She typically finishes it off by taking a feather or two that falls off to keep for herself.

Varric: “Holy Mother of Andraste’s ass.” he breathes, taking it all in. He comes around quickly, though, and asks a lot of questions– though few on anatomy, unlike Dorian, and more on who they are, where they come from, and about their people. He’s fascinated, and taking notes. Sometimes when he’s out of writing quills, he wryly asks them if he can take one of theirs– or may just take one if they drop off from time-to-time. He’s not a fan of going into the sky, at all. “You know, I like the idea of getting as far away from the Stone as possible,” he says nervously as he looks down at the world below, “but this is a bit too far. Dwarves don’t fly.”

Cole: He knew, and he doesn’t mind in the least. “I am sorry. The others know, and they want to help. They don’t mind the wings.” He also comments that the others are happy while watching the Herald fly, and the Inquisitor takes to doing small shows on a regular basis for the crowd at Skyhold, which always draws large numbers. Everyone is cheered by the amazing sight of them in the sky, and morale goes up. People start sitting and waiting for hours before the show starts. Cole smiles– they helped.

Dorian: About five million questions start flying from his lips as soon as he’s out of the initial shock. How fast can you fly? How many feathers do you have? What’s the bone structure of your wings? Can you stick one straight out so I can measure how long it is? Where are your people from? Why are you the only one out here? It makes them more than a little uncomfortable, and he feels bad when he realizes how uncomfortable they are. “Oh.” he says, suddenly quiet. “I… I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to… if you need to talk, let me know?” He loves watching them soar through the sky, and he takes notes as he watches. He considers them and their wings utterly beautiful, and he feels honored to know them and witness their flight. He does not particularly care for going in the air, though, citing a sudden fear of extreme heights as he clings to the Herald, trying desperately to not look down. If Romanced: He loves preening his lover’s feathers, because it’s hard for them to reach behind and get them clean. He finishes it all with a kiss. He feels so safe under his boyfriend’s wings as they lay together, and he silently smirks as he imagines his father’s reaction to seeing his boyfriend.

Vivienne: She has to work to hide her complete and utter shock, and briefly scolds the Herald for not telling her before. When they’re comfortable, she examines their wings in detail. She figures out a grooming regimen. “Darling, everyone knows what you are now– there’s no point in hiding your wings any longer.” She smiles. “So use them. Preen them. Take the time and effort to make them presentable. You will be imposing, awe-inspiring, beautiful, majestic, and everyone will know it with a single glance.” She introduces them to her tailor, who manages to make them outfits that accommodate the wings– even accentuate them. Vivienne does not like being taken into the sky, but tolerates it if necessary in combat.

Solas: Their people were known to the ancient Elvhen, but their numbers were in slow decline– he’s honestly surprised that there’s any still around at all. He’s sympathetic to them, and surprises them by being the least shocked of any of the party members. He claims that he has seen their people before in the Fade, and suddenly the other party members are coming to him, asking for information. When he shakes them off, he mentions to the Herald that they shouldn’t hide their wings, for they are beautiful and proof of their ancient people. He asks them a lot of questions about the current state of their race, about their society, which befuddles the Herald. He doesn’t seem to mind being lifted into the air, if need be, and may even ask the Herald to carry him to places inaccessible by walking alone. If Romanced: They spend dates just finding places that only winged creatures can reach, and they look over the world together. They slumber and see memories previous unexplored by the remote location, and Solas feels genuine happiness that someone can understand the value of unexplored dreams. “Thank you, ma vhenan. Thank you…”

Cullen: He just sighs. Somehow this doesn’t even shock him. Maybe he’s seen too much. He’s a bit frustrated that they didn’t tell him to begin with, but lets it go readily. He asks if they know any others of their kind who would be interested in joining the Inquisition– flying soldiers would be excellent– and finds himself bewildered as they tell him that the vast majority of their people are shy and mistrustful of land-dwellers. He apologizes, and does not press the matter further. He enjoys watching them fly, and compliments them on their ability, but absolutely hates being taken off the ground and into the sky in any circumstances. If Romanced: He’s somewhat more tolerant of being taken into the sky, but he still doesn’t like it. Sometimes when he’s having bad dreams, he awakens as one of her wings gently folds over him, covering him softly, affectionately, and his heart rate slows. He’s safe, and she loves him, and he feels it. He goes back to sleep in peace, happy with what he has and who he loves.

Leliana: She’s just envious, if anything; she wouldn’t mind being able to fly. She was wondering what they were hiding, and found several stray feathers (which may or may not be in unusual colors) from time-to-time, and this explains it. She takes it pretty calmly, and asks if they know any others of their kind that might be willing to join as agents, or even airborne couriers. If the Herald ever takes her into the sky, she acts totally calm, but she LOVES it, even though she doesn’t say so.

Josephine: She’s at a loss. She tries to quickly compose herself and awkwardly make sense of the situation, but once the shock wears off, she’s endlessly curious about being able to fly. She watches them zip through the sky with grace and speed and is utterly mesmerized. Like Vivienne, she encourages a strict preening regimen– if they’re going to have wings, they might as well make them presentable. Eventually, the Herald offers to take her flying, and she squeals with a mix of delight and a bit of fright. Her hair blows loosely, and the wind’s on her face, and by the time the Herald brings her back down, she’s dazed and eager for the next time they fly together. If Romanced: They take her flying with them all the time, and it makes for interesting dates. She giggles and squeals (and on one occasion, screams as they do a loop with her in their arms) and has the time of her life. They always end it by landing somewhere picturesque, and they sit together, cuddling and admiring the world around them.

Krem: “Your… your Worship?” he asks, shocked, not sure if he’s seeing correctly, or if Bull’s pulling a prank like that time they all covered themselves with feathers– but no, it’s really them. If they don’t mind, he asks them questions about flying, and remarks that the Chargers would love having one of their kind on the team, if they know anyone looking for work. Sometimes he tosses his stuffed winged nug plushies at them from the ground, and they catch, not unlike the game played with Sera. He really likes flying, and admires the view of the world below.

On Lapis and Showing Affection

Ok so I see a lot of people talking about how it always seems to be Peridot showing affection toward Lapis and that Lapis doesn’t seem to reciprocate.

Here’s why that’s false.

Lapis is not a very open person. Peridot on the other hand, has learned to be much more open with Steven, the CGs, and Lapis,

Lapis’s forms of affection and caring are either HUGE gestures

Like sacrificing her freedom in a (slightly misguided) attempt to protect her only friend at the time (Steven)

Or sometimes  it’s small, almost imperceptible things, such as being comfortable enough around someone to express herself in a new way (which is something we can pretty safely say she’s NEVER done before…free expression is not a trait Homeworld prizes, and she’s been trapped in one way or another for a long time)

And appreciate the way they express themselves…

And just generally let her guard down enough to trust them

Or it’s spending quality time with people and getting to know their interests (Like giving Earth a chance for Steven and getting into Camp Pining Hearts for Peridot)

We KNOW Lapis doesn’t trust easily. The only reason she trusts Steven is because he let her out of the mirror and healed her. She’s still very guarded around the Crystal Gems. But she lets her guard down completely around Peridot,

Study her expressions and her hand gestures. She’s genuinely relaxed (or as relaxed as she ever gets) around Peridot.

She’s also incredibly protective of Steven. When she thinks he’s trapped Peridot’s tablet she loses her mind with worry,

And then…when she realizes Steven is not trapped and everything is ok, she APOLOGIZES to Peridot for almost breaking her things, somethings 1) no one else has done to Peridot, despite a lot of her things being put in jeopardy 2) something we really haven’t seen Lapis do before.

I think that we can safely assume that her protective streak might eventually be turned to Peridot, especially given how we’ve definitely already seen it the other way around, and we know that Lapis’s other close relationship (Steven) is someone she’s genuinely protective of.

Yes, Lapis takes a while to warm up to Peridot originally, despite Peri’s multiple attempts to get her to. However…she protected her from the Ruby ship

While clearly not AS indicative of protective feelings toward Peridot as the entire Malachite incident is toward her feelings toward Steven, it’s still there.

Another example of Lapis’s affections is this scene:

Peridot is so clearly excited about doing a victory pose and Lapis’s response is to agree to it, in a tone that implies she thinks it’s adorable.

Of course, you could argue that all these things are  just Lapis humoring Peridot for Steven’s sake, but the “meep morp” incident happens before Steven arrives, they’re showing him finished products. Same goes for the sunrise scene. And camp pining hearts. And growing a garden together. And everything that happens in “The New Crystal Gems”

Not everyone shows love and affection through physical touch. Lapis seems to be the kind that shows her affection through the time she spends with people she cares about. (Quality Time love language). This can be said for both Steven and Peridot. Lapis befriends Steven through being “Beach Summer Fun Buddies” while she’s in the mirror and continues to show a desire to spend time with him in Same Old World and Alone at Sea. She definitely shows a strong desire to spend time with Peridot, given that she helps her grow a garden, gets into her favorite show, creates art with her, spends a day pretending to be the Crystal Gems with her, does whatever it is they were doing in the toilet, watches the sun come up with her. All of these are Lapis showing Peridot affection, whether romantic or otherwise, through making a choice to spend time with her.

And then there’s the fact that Lapis is still recovering. People who have mental illness related to trauma often have a difficult time opening up to others, but it doesn’t mean they don’t care about them. Lapis is a trauma victim with depression. Her actions HAVE to be viewed through that lens. So if it seems like Lapis is less inclined to show obvious affection than Peridot, than maybe it has something to do with the fact that she’s been through so much and it’s affected her so much:

WHO ARE THE DIAMONDS AND WHO CREATED THEM?

[[[[[WARNING!!!!!!!! SPOILERS!!!!! IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN PAST “THE ZOO,” STOP NOW!!! THE VERY LATEST EPISODES ARE REFERENCED HERE!! YOU’VE BEEN  WARNED! ALSO THIS POST LONG AF.]]]]]

My theory is that Pink, Yellow, AND Blue diamond were all created by White diamond herself. I think she is the true gem matriarch. Her appearance is of course the one that’s taking the longest. In every insignia for the Great Diamond Authority, the white diamond is on top while all others are beneath her.

Notice how all 3 diamonds intersect and make a tiny, shaded diamond? I think it  represents Pink. Kind of sweet.

Yellow and Blue are side by side, and in the previous insignia, pink is right below them. And, both their gems are located on their chests. But when you look at the murals of White and pink Diamond, White has hers on the forehead, Pink on her Navel. That’s no mere coincidence. I think this means that Yellow and Blue were created at about the same time, Pink last, and White is the first. Let’s look at their murals.

Yellow has 9 planets, so I believe she’s older. Her general demeanor appears strict, dutiful, and reserved. But when it comes to Blue Diamond, that facade softens. She becomes very concerned,

has a tendency of butting into her business,

Wouldn’t you rather forget her?

gives her advice and tries to inspire her,

Where’s their Diamond when they need her, Blue? You’ve got to be a leader, Blue!

and even orders her own Yellow Pearl to “make Blue feel better.” The mural, along with her tendency towards taking responsibility and forcing others to do the same,

I’m here to bring you back to reality, Blue.

It’s been thousands of years, Blue, and you still can’t bring yourself to destroy these Gems? She was shattered by a Rose Quartz! The entire cut of Gem deserves the same fate!

and putting her own feelings to the side so she can show a brave face

Don’t you know I miss her, too?

for those that need her.

Look at how terrified they are.

Look at Blue’s concern

This points towards her being the elder of the two of them. Her actions line up with what an older sister, who knew her duties and responsibilities, would do. It’s clear she doesn’t feel at liberty to disclose or showcase her feelings, because of those that look to her as a pillar of strength.

Holly Blue Agate: You can just feel strength and confidence radiating from her.

Next, we have Blue Diamond.

Blue has 8 planets, so I believe she’s only slightly younger than Yellow Diamond. In “That will be all,” Yellow Diamond is seen trying to get her out of her funk, and Blue Diamond turns her head and makes the face a petulant child might while getting a lecture. Just look at the dynamic here.

Blue Diamond: Why can’t you just let me grieve?
Yellow Diamond: You can’t keep coming here forever!
Blue Diamond: Why not?

But let’s look at the whole picture. From what we’ve seen so far, it’s clear that Blue has been mourning the loss of Pink Diamond for at least 5,000 years. Meanwhile, it looks like Yellow Diamond has continued progress, not allowing herself to be distracted in the least.

She has so much to do, that not only did she not look at the communicator to see to whom she was speaking, at first, but she didn’t even immediately recognize that it was about a mission regarding Earth, a planet that’s caused her endless grief, that she’s wanted to destroy for eons. That’s crazy.

She’s had her subjects fill out detailed reports on their missions, that she actually reads herself,

Yellow Diamond asked for, uh, my dad, a Connie, a Lars, a Sadie, a mailman, and an onion, I think. Six human variations specified in a report by Peridot 5XG.

has a hands on approach in regards to reaching out to supervisors

To Peridot: I’ll inform your manager of your incompetence.

and has sent out subjects to carry out literally 4 missions on Earth so far: checking the status of the Cluster, sending Jasper and Lapis as a bodyguard and informant, respectively, sending a team of Rubies to retrieve Jasper, AND personally dispatching a Topaz fusion and Aquamarine to collect human specimens. SHE’S ON TOP OF HER SHIT, Y'ALL.

Meanwhile, in comparison, Blue Diamond is spending her time quite leisurely by preserving, maintaining and visiting the Zoo, mourning in Pink Diamond’s bed chamber, and sneaking to Earth to mourn at her palanquin. Basically stuck in time. But how is it she is at liberty to do these things, for millennia, whilst Yellow is working so consistently?? It’s like Yellow Diamond has thrown herself into her work, and Blue is sulking. It’s almost as if Yellow Diamond has had to pick up twice the pace, in order to make up for Blue’s slack. If that’s the case, then it makes TOTAL sense that Yellow is not only concerned, but frustrated and upset.

She lookin’ like “Girl, if you cut this sh*t tf out…”

But, when Blue Diamond admits that she wanted more humans for the zoo, she drops everything to personally dispatch her subjects to gather some, for Blue Diamond’s sake.

Yellow Diamond: Is that what you want? Sapphire, has the Cluster emerged yet?
Sapphire: No, it has not.
Yellow Diamond: Then there’s still time. That will be all.

Based on all that, even with her strictness and severity, I think it’s clear that she’s been coddling Blue Diamond all this time, allowing Blue to grieve and lament, but not giving herself even a moment’s reprieve to do the same. That seems like the exact sort of thing an older sibling would do for a younger sibling, and it also makes sense that a younger sibling would also have the leniency to do all those things.

Now for Pink Diamond. She only has 1 planet on her mural. And if the actions and words of Blue Diamond are to be believed, all they have of her is the Earth and the Zoo. Which makes sense as to why Blue is so desperate to preserving those things, because it’s “all they have left of her."

Yellow, she made them. This is all we have left of her. These Gems, this place, and the Earth.

She didn’t get to conquer scores of planets like her peers, all she had was Earth. Then she was destroyed (but was she really???) She only had, as far as we know 3 species of gem, all Quartz types, all designed as soldiers for protection, defense, and conquest. Meanwhile, Blue and Yellow have far more speciation in their gems, technicians, engineers, construction workers, diplomats and aristocracy, etc. If this is the case, it makes sense that she would start her empire with soldiers that could keep her safe whilst acquiring new territory and then creating more gems later on, in her image. Yellow is militaristic and practical, Blue is aristocratic and diplomatic, who knows what Pink would have been? This leads me to believe she was the youngest, because she had the fewest planets, and her potential is so unknown.

Finally. We’ve come to White Diamond. We know the least about her. As previously stated, every insignia we know of, has her at the very top of the order. But check out her mural, compared to the others.

Notice anything?? Firstly, she has the most planets of any of the other Diamonds, coming in at about 13, I think. Second, she is the only figure that faces forward, while all the others have a profile view. All other figures hold their planets with one hand, extended from their bodies. But Look at how White Diamond holds hers. It’s at at the center of her being, and cupped gingerly with both hands. That’s gotta be homeworld. No other planet on any mural has the same significance. And if she is the gem holding the most significant planet, then I argue that it is she who must be the most significant gem of them all. Now let’s consider the other Diamonds. I said it made sense for the first gems Pink made to be militaristically based. I think the same applies for White. If she created the Diamonds, it would make sense that the first beings she created to be militaristic such as Yellow Diamond, for the sake of extending her empire.

But why and where did she come from???

I don’t know who created her or if she even had a creator. It may be possible that she was a singular entity and perfect being that had been alone for eons. Until she decided to create her own home and family. Or not. Whatever, ¾ backstories ain’t bad. But I definitely think the other Diamonds were created for serving the purposes of White Diamond. I think it’s very possible they are afraid of her and that she is the true villain of the series. Just think of the expendable manner in which she/they treats her/their subjects… What do y'all think??

I know it’s super last minute to post this theory, since it looks like the reveal is finally on the way, truth is I’ve been thinking of it for a while, but only JUST today figured out ow to embed images in tumblr. It was super hard to figure out before, but it looks like they made it easier, so here I a lol. Please be kind

Constantly losing focus while you study be frustrating. We will go through some of the top study tips that can allow you to focus and study effectively.

Remind yourself why
One of the key things that help us maintain focus no matter what, is by getting really interested in whatever we are doing. So find a way to make your topic interesting, relatable and practical in your life.

Remind yourself that you want to study to expand your worldly knowledge, to graduate, get into a field that you can flourish in, and provide some value to the world with your awesomeness. Also try thinking in metaphors and whatifs. It’s your mind, no one else has access to it, so think of wondrous things to make yourself want to devote the next few hours of your life to the task at hand.

Before studying

  1. Plan out what you want to accomplish and give yourself a time limit. For example, I will read 10 pages from my psych textbook in 30 minutes, or I will spend 1 hour researching the key words for my report.
  2. Get enough sleep. Ideally around 7-9 hours. If you sleep earlier, you may need less sleep, but please never do less than 6. Constant sleep deprivation is deteriorating for the brain and body.
  3. Eat foods that help you focus. Which include blueberries, green tea, avocados, spinach, kale, salmon, nuts and seeds. I often have a spinach, banana & kale smoothie with matcha green tea powder, but you can combine some of the ingredients in a quick sandwich if you like.
  4. Your brain mainly works on sugar, but you need to temper it with a protein or something with low GI, to reduce any blood-sugar problems which can lead to sudden tiredness. A quick way to find a a balance is to opt for a fruit or healthy smoothie.
  5. Be aware that if you study right after having a heavy meal the blood circulating around your brain reduces and goes to help with digestion, so you may feel less alert. Smaller meals can help.
  6. Take supplements that help you focus: fish oil, omega 3, Ginko Biloba, vitamin B12, Co-Enzyme Q10, and iron.
  7. Identify whatever distracts you and find a way to minimise it. So perhaps you can go to a non-distracting environment, if that is an issue. I prefer libraries or coffeeshops.
  8. Surround yourself with motivated people. If you can befriend the top few students in your class, or at least be on nicer terms with them, hopefully their studiousness will rub off on you.
  9. Have all the stationary and materials you need at hand.
  10. Set up a reward system, but avoid food as a reward as it can lead to an unhealthy relationship with food. Instead try a relaxing activity, or hobby. Pretty much any incentive you can think of that will help you cross the finish line.

While studying

  1. Prime - Spend 2 minutes skimming or figuring out what you will be going through.
  2. Drinking game - Keep a bottle of water or two next to you. Drink a cup or a half cup worth every time you get distracted for more than 5 seconds.
  3. Put distractions in their place - Write down any distracting thoughts in a small notebook. But remember it’s not supposed to act as your pretty bullet journal, but you can make another spread for if it you like. I made a small notebook the other day to write down quick thoughts that I would otherwise dwell on. It helps me direct my thoughts appropriately to what I’m studying, and still have those important ideas to refer to later.
  4. Motivate yourself - Write out exactly why you want to be a [insert awesome career position] in detail with examples. Keep that page or post-it on hand and look at it when you feel yourself losing focus. It can give you a motivational boost and can inspire you to keep going. Sometimes I like to visualise specific scenarios of how I could help people once my finish my studies.
  5. Take strategic breaks - Remove yourself from your study space and think of something else for a few minutes. You can get a snack, walk around, do a quick workout, look outside, and notice nature. Practice being present in the moment. Listen to of the world around you and get out of your head.
  6. If you feel you can not sustain your concentration on a task for too long, you may switch between two different yet equally important tasks. But try to do a big task for at least 20 minutes, you never know, by then you might like it. Some studies show, it takes 20 minutes to really get into concentrating on something.
  7. Reduce as many distractions as you can, including turning off notifications and wifi, putting you phone on do not disturb or airplane mode, and try blocking apps.
  8. Track how you use your time. I like the apps ‘Now and Then’ and ‘Moment’ for iOS. So you can see how much you have accomplished or slacked off.
  9. Write draft first. Edit and prettify later.
  10. If you’re in the final stage, focus on the fact that you have made it this far and that you’re almost done.
  11. Try to make it fun somehow, perhaps with strategies you used when you were a kid.
  12. Use as many senses as you can.
  13. Record your voice and say whatever you are reading or writing in different accents.
  14. Draw quick doodles next to whoever you are doing to help you remember it better.
  15. As long it’s not your first draft, feel free to use colourful pens, highlights and tape to keep you engaged.

After studying

  1. Revise whatever you have accomplished just before your break, by quickly skimming through your most recent notes or readings.
  2. Consequent revision schedule. The best way to remember what you have worked on is to revise it in specific intervals, after you have studying it. So after five minutes, in that evening before bed, the next day, at the end of the week and then in three weeks.
  3. Reward yourself, as long as you feel like you ended up accomplishing something you couldn’t before.

You can try out each step for two days each to see which strategies work best for you.

I hope these tips can help you, and feel free message me if you would like more details for one of the points :)

Summary of TAZ discourse today

(Let me be clear I am likely to come across as defensive of taz in this)

Here’s the primary source of the controversy. Originally, preview images of the comic adaptation of the adventure zone showed it was going to portray all three main characters as white. New preview pages of the comic with revised designs were released today. (For the record, I am not 100% sure how much the Mcelroys are actually involved in the comic making process?)

So now we have; one pale skinned character, one dark skinned character and one character with non-human skin color. The brothers have made it clear that these design are not canon and there are no “canon” appearances for the characters (If you feel like that is also a bit of a cop out, thats fair tbh). A lot of people were unhappy for several reasons.

- There still could be more poc representation.

- “We wanted dark skinned Taako and you give us blue??? wtf is this??” (Again, I can see why people read this as a lame cop out)

- Some people feel really strongly that Taako needs to be canonically Latinx because of the running gag of his name sounding like taco which has grown into him having some connection to inventing tacos. (Griffin has discussed his anxiety about this, and I think he is in a lose-lose situation. Having Latinx characters named taco and chalupa would probably create even more backlash)

- A lot of people have decided that giving Taako blue/green skin makes the design anti-semitic. (It takes some deep ass digging to figure out why green skin is antisemitic? But apparently the green skin+long nose+pointy hat look came from anti semitic stereotypes back in ye olde europe)

And then there are a couple things from the newest episode.

-There is a long-ish romantic scene were Barry Bluejeans and Lup become an official romantic pair. Some people aren’t happy about a straight relationship getting a lot of time, or think that the lgbtq relationships in the show didnt get a comparable amount of time. (For the record, Lup is a trans woman so Blupjeans is straight, but arguably still lgbtq representation)

-At one point Justin does a bit where Taako is reciting inspirational quotes from famous people and attributing them to himself. During this, Coco Chanel gets quoted and some people are pissed on account of Coco Chanel being a MEGA-Problematic person in a number of ways. (I am anticipating that Justin will figured out he goofed and publicly apologize bout that)

IDK what I am even going on about tho… I think for me the bottom line is its totally okay to be disappointed about some of this stuff. BUT there has been a lot of black and white “if the Mcelboys arent saints then they must be VILLIANS” stuff going around and??? Yeah they have made mistakes out of ignorance but have always shown a desire and willingness to take criticism and improve themselves. I mean, maybe they only act like they care about representation for the sake of pleasing there primary audience. But if someone seems to be trying as hard as Griffin is to do right by minority groups, I really think we should try to maintain our civility when they mess up and give them a chance to improve themselves.

But hey, then again, I could just be cutting them too much slack cause I enjoy TAZ. That not implausible.

believememylove  asked:

Please, I love when you write for Jack Wilder. Also I just rewatched both of the Now you see me movies and am dying for new stuff

WELL SINCE YOU SAID PLEASE. Basing this off of one of my earlier headcanons!

Imagine Jack just listening to you talk, and before you know it, he’s mastered your voice and he uses it when he’s playing around and mocks you.

Title: Voices.
Pairing: Jack Wilder x Reader.
Words: 1069.
Rating: T.

“I’m just saying,” Jack stated rather proudly with a cocky grin that tilted to the left side. His dimple showed itself momentarily and left a warm feeling flutter in your chest as it always had a way of melting even the coldest of hearts. “Imitating voices are easy. I could teach you, if you wanted.” With a flick of his wrist, he sent the deck of cards resting in his hands into a frenzy before relaxing them once again. His fingers continued to tap against them. Being stuck in one place, in what would be considered ‘intense hiding’ was doing absolutely nothing for his restlessness. Sitting in an armchair, his legs dangling over the side with the occasional kick of his feet in a sporadic rhythm. He held himself with such a casual confidence it left you feeling vaguely jealous and wondering as to how he accomplished such a slacked appearance.

Jack gazed up at you with deep brown eyes. The sun sunk through the window across from where he was sitting, accentuating the curves of his face and lightning his eyes so they appeared a shade or two lighter than they actually were. His eyelashes framed his eyes and seemed to be on fire as the sunlight dripped onto his skin. Jack’s eyes spoke many things at once but the most prominent emotion happened to be on the more mischievous side. He flicked his wrist once again and the rapid movement of the deck of cards brought you back into reality, away from the seemingly inevitable daydream sitting across from you. “Have you really heard my voice enough to imitate me?” You finally inquired moments after being mesmerized by him.

Jack’s face faltered for a moment as he thought about it, that once beautiful smirk dipping into a slight frown before turning into a full on smile. It was a dramatic change of facial expressions which was something he was also good at executing. A soft chuckle left his parted lips and with a gentle clearing of his throat, he began speaking. “Yeah, I’d like to think I listen to you. Even when you don’t know it.”

“What do you mean?” You laughed quietly, fixing your eyes on the cards on his hands. “Even when I don’t know it?”

“Yesterday,” He used as an example, “when you were talking to Danny in the kitchen. You were complaining. I’m glad you were, I wasn’t sure what you would have sounded like when complaining. Even when you complain to me, it sounds different.”

Raising your eyebrows in amusement, you smiled and asked, “What do I sound like when I’m complaining?”

Your request seemed to amuse him as he brought his legs down and propped himself properly on the armchair. His shirt rode up for a few seconds with his movement, catching your eyes. Resting his hands on his thighs, Jack leaned forward and shot a more heated grin at you this time. You caught his eyes this time and kept them locked before Jack opened his mouth. He laughed while you expecting to hear him speak. Biting down on his bottom lip, Jack’s smile twirled into a childish expression. “I can’t do it with you staring at me like that. So much pressure.”

He was playing around, you could tell from the tone of voice he had used. Slightly raised and a bit more frantic. “Please.” You laughed your plea and covered your mouth.

Jack laughed as well, looking to the side before clearing his throat once again. “Please.” The sound that came out of his mouth was one that sounded exactly like you did. As strange as it was as well, Jack had moved his face in a gesture that mimicked your expressions..

“I don’t sound like that, do I?” You gasped, throwing your head back in a chuckle.

“I don’t sound like that, do I?” Jack’s voice dipped back to normal at the end of the sentence. He couldn’t control himself from laughing. “You really do sound like that.”

“How awful.” You grimaced playfully.

“Awful?” Jack’s face scrunched into disbelief. “I think you sound cute. Trust me (Name), I spend my nights sitting in bed trying to talk like you, but for the longest time I couldn’t get it just right.” Jack stood up, resting the deck of cards on the table in the middle of the living room. He took a few steps towards you, his heavy boots pattering against the floor as he did. There was no logical sense in being dressed with when you were in hiding, but still Jack found himself getting up and getting ready. It was a precautionary thing, he told you once, you always have to be ready to run. “There’s just something about your voice that I can’t seem to grasp.”

“Maybe you didn’t practice enough.” You teased.

“Nah.” He shrugged his slender shoulders and sat next to you on the loveseat. Gesturing with his hands, he rolled his hand from his throat to you and admitted, “Your voice has a quality that I can’t imitate just right. I guess I love you too much, so it makes it hard to imitate that sort of emotion.” This was something you knew but hearing him say it was something that left you feeling weak in the knees. You were thankful you were sitting because you were sure if you were standing you would have fallen completely. Jack seemed a bit more bashful now as he let that be said. His cheeks held a soft pink color and his eyes were staring straight forward.

It was your turn to shrug your shoulders as you fiddled with your fingers, “Why would that matter?”

“Because I like the way your voice sounds when you speak.” He turned his attention to you finally, his dark brown eyes drowning into yours. His body leaned towards you, “I like the way you talk to me. You don’t talk to anyone else they same way.”

Smiling cutely, you brushed two fingers across his right eyebrow before dropping them down his cheek, “That’s because I love you too much.”

Jack nodded and bit his bottom lip while tipping his head towards your fingers, “You can copy my phrases but you still sound nothing like me.”

“I don’t want to sound like you.” You admitted, “I don’t want anyone to sound like you, Jack. I love the way you sound…”

“Sorry, I just didn’t feel like passing to you, L/N.” she brushed you off. You scoffed. She was unbelievable.

“You knew I was your best bet. I can’t believe you lost that for us.” You shook your head.

“It’s not my fault you can’t play soccer, L/N. there’s no hiding Coach’s charity case this year.” Romelda Parsons spat. There was no such thing as Coach letting on a charity case each year, she was just trying to intimidate you. The snooty brunette girl had been jealous ever since you’d joined the team, purely because you were so much better than her - maybe the best on the team, and coach paid far more attention to you than to her.

You were ready to show her.
“You little-” an arm eased you back, and another was put up to Parsons face.

“Easy, easy.” A smooth, calm voice interrupted your angry thoughts and soothed your boiling blood.

“Fuck off, Atkins.” Parsons gritted her teeth at the well-built honey-skinned boy holding you back.

“PARSONS! Over here now please!” Coach beckoned Romelda, and she almost snarled her teeth before walking off to talk to him.

The boy in front of you turned to face you. His blue eyes smiled at you while his lips did the same. He was wearing baseball gear, which fitted his muscles snugly. There was no denying the fact that he was insanely attractive.

You’d seen this boy around lots.

Jeff Atkins.

Loved by everyone, baseball player, popular, and you thought; way out of your league.

“You okay?” He asked with concern laced in his eyes.

“I can fight my own battles, thanks.” You muttered slightly, but stared him down nonetheless, you couldn’t let him know he phased you.

“That’s what I was worried about,” he chuckled. “1. You absolutely wreck Romelda, 2. Coach sees, 3. You get in trouble, 4. Maybe get a suspension, 5. I don’t see you playing soccer.” He smirked before continuing, “I can tell you pack a mean punch in there, Romelda wouldn’t stand a chance.”

You pretend to ignore everything he was saying, but really you were drinking in every detail.

“I know she wouldn’t.” You said defiantly.

You paused while you watched the way he grinned at your words and scratched his chin.

“I didn’t think Baseball practice was now?” You mused.

“It’s not.”

So, what was he doing nosing in your business anyhow?

“Why are you here?” You crossed your arms, your team had dissipated back to the changing rooms by now, and it was just you and Jeff on the field.

“I like to watch the girls soccer.”

“You perv!”

“Not like that! It’s just, you’re an awesome player and I hold great admiration for you, watching you play fuels me to play my own game.” He explained.

“Don’t be silly.” You scoffed.

“No, it sounds silly, but it isn’t. There’s something so clear about your passion that just makes me want to live my life.” He smirked, noticing your expression. “Don’t laugh at me, L/N.”

He knew your name??? He was just a boy from school, a boy way out of your league, who you’d never imagined knew of your existence. But instead, he was a boy who watched every soccer practice, complimented your play, and knew your name. You had to play it cool.

“I’ll keep a straight face, Atkins.”

“I should be off, we’ll be practicing soon and I wanna get a few hits in myself before the team comes, but thanks for entertaining me.” He started off, and you felt a pang of disappointment as he turned his back to you.

“Oh, and Y/N? That goal was incredible. Best thing I’ve seen in days.”

—-

It had been a few days since Jeff Atkins had saved your arch nemesis’ life, and incidentally pervaded into your life. He smiled at you in the corridors now, and you could’ve sworn he even winked once. On Tuesday, after a few judgemental comments about your clothing, you found a note in your locker;

You always look awesome Y/N. In fact, i might have to steal some clothes sometime. -J

Which you could only assume was from the man himself. On Thursday, Atkins slipped you the last chocolate muffin in the cafeteria. And on Friday, you had practice again.

Your play was slacking, your usual fire was off and you were distracted.

“L/N- pay attention! Ball coming your way!” Jess warned. You kicked your foot out just in time, but the hit was poor. You continually looked up at the bleachers, hoping to see Jeff watching you, but to no luck. His no show disappointed you.

—-

“What is wrong with you today, Y/N?” Jess caught you up after practice. She was clearly concerned.

“I don’t know, Jess, I guess today isn’t my day.” You sighed.

“You drop your lucky charm or something?”

“Something like that.”

The team left for the changing rooms and you slumped on the bottom row of the bleachers.

“So a lucky charm, huh?” You immediately knew the voice coming from above you. You turned and saw Jeff coming down the steps.

“I don’t have one.” You were blunt, you needed to remind yourself not to get feelings for a boy so out of your league.

“Maybe you should get one, you looked in need of one.” He slumped down next to you.

“Thanks, I appreciate the compliment.” The sarcasm dripped from your tongue.

“Not because you played badly by any means, but because you looked a little lost out there today.”

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me, my brain doesn’t appear to be working recently.”

Jeff dropped a wooden bead in your hand. It was nothing special, simple, wooden, spherical, with a hole in the middle. A plain wooden bead.

“Uh, thanks?” There was question in your voice.
He chuckled.

“It’s your new lucky charm. Don’t lose it, I promise it’ll help you win the match next week.” Sincerity coated his words and his eyes bore into yours, with a jokey overtone.

“I will keep it close. But I might wash it first, if you found it on the floor.” Of course, you didn’t really care where it had been, and you wouldn’t really wash it, but you were curious as to where it had appeared from.

“Don’t worry, it wasn’t on the floor.” He chuckled again, and started to stand. “I’ll see you around, L/N. Keep an eye out for me at the match.” He winked before walking off.

—–

You squeezed the bead tightly before placing it back in your gym bag. The game was starting, and you were not ready.

Obviously, all your nerves went out the window after your third goal of the match, at only 20 minutes in.

You won, which was no surprise to everyone, except you. You spotted Jeff making his way down the stairs and ran up to meet him.

“You were right! I can’t believe it worked!” You shone like the sun from happiness.

“I hate to say I told you so.” His eyes sparkled at you.

“It’s insane, you’re magic!” You mocked, feigning shock.

“What can I say?”

You smiled at each other for a moment, basking in your happiness.

“Actually, can I admit something embarrassing?” His tone turned awkward.

“You’re not magic?” You joked. He laughed.

“No, um, actually I was really nervous to talk to you. Seeing Romelda and you at each other’s throats the other weeks sent me into immediate rescue mode, (not that you need rescuing), and I didn’t realise until the adrenaline had worn off that I’d actually ended up speaking to you, but by that point I was too far in my rescue.”

You laughed at the idea of Jeff Atkins being scared to talk to you.

“You’re just so cool. You don’t care what anyone thinks, you’re passionate, you’re an amazing player, I love your style, not to mention how smart and gorgeous you are.”
“What I admire most is honestly, how badass you are.”

You blushed, taking compliments was a struggle.

“Jeff stop messing, it’s not funny.” You rolled your eyes playfully.

“I’d never- this is the most embarrassing part-” he took a deep breath, “I sorta like you.”

You couldn’t believe what you were hearing. Jeff Atkins? Likes you?

“You do?” Was all you could think to respond with.

“Yes.” He breathed, and moved closer to you.

“Is this-” he asked as he leaned in toward your face and cupped his hand on your cheek. You nodded forcibly in consent, before he pushed his lips onto yours.

After a while, and with regret, you broke off.

“But- you’re so out of my league.” You breathed, doubting yourself.

“I play baseball, Y/N, leagues are my thing.”

——

“Jeff! Please tell me you sent out the invites on your way home!” You screamed downstairs at your boyfriend.

“Of course I did!” He shouted back up.

You threw various wedding catalogues off the bed to reach the top you’d been looking for, before throwing it on.

“You ready babe?” Jeff yelled at you.

“Just coming!” You yelled back, before pulling out from under your top, a string, with a plain wooden bead on it.

pairing: lin manuel miranda x reader

word count: 7,500+

genre: angst (i said it was fluff. i lied.)

summary: lin is putting so much effort into hamilton and you feel like he’s not putting enough into your relationship.

a/n: hahaha, i’m back bitches. hope you enjoy this fic that i put too much time into and will probably still be crap the ending isn’t quite how i wanted it to be but oh well ill make edits tomorrow if i need to or if i feel like i should. hope all the arguments and feelings make sense. okay love u all. ok bye

Sunday. 10:59 pm.

It all started because Lin was late.

And he was never, ever late.

Well, that wasn’t completely accurate. When streets were crowded, or bars were rowdy, or he was just in one of his writing zones that he couldn’t be pulled out of no matter what, then, and only then, he was late. But tonight was a normal night - well, not normal, but a night when he should’ve showed up to your apartment hours sooner, because he hadn’t seen you since Thursday and you thought he would have missed you. And you were not only surprised, but disappointed. Underneath one of his sweatshirts was a new pair of fancy underwear you had been dying to test the waters with. (Lin was particular about underwear. There were some things he liked, some things he didn’t, and some things that only truly hypnotized him the next morning, when he was sleepy and lazy about the whole ordeal, but still entranced enough to try – and maybe that made it feel a bit more special.) Now they felt like you had struggled to pull them on for nothing.

Not that you were complaining, of course. With a partner as kind and as wonderful, and not mention as brilliant and as gifted, as Lin, of course he was going to have a busy schedule with a lot of different people to meet, greet and charm (which Lin was undeniably good at). You were thankful every day that he had so many things to do and so many ideas to act upon, and that wasn’t just drunkenly sitting in his apartment and twiddling his thumbs all day like your last boyfriend. And, not to mention, you loved to brag about him to your family and your friends back home. (And you weren’t sorry if they felt jealous, because yes, you and Lin had built an amazing life together, and most people should be envious of your undying love and rising success.)

Still, with the few hours you could manage to snag him for per week… you felt like maybe you deserved a little more than three hours less and a cold dinner, untouched and frankly now unappealing on your dining room table.

You saw your phone light up on the coffee table and leaned over to snatch it up in your trembling fingers. (You hadn’t even noticed you were shaking. How long had you been? And was it with anger or fear?) A text from Lin had popped up under the clock, which now read: 11:06 pm.

Four hours late.

Lin

On my way.

Ouch. Not even a ‘love you’? Not even any x’s and o’s? Not even an exclamation point?

That was a dead giveaway that something… was wrong.

We live next door to each other and I can see you through the window while you’re dancing to your iPod in your flannel pajamas and disheveled hair and God you’re a dork” AU. Please! Your bellarke fics are positively wonderful!

Thanks for the prompt! Hope you like it! AO3

Living in college apartments is… not glamorous. Walls are thin, pipes are thinner, and working air conditioning is a luxury. But it’s not terrible, Clarke finds, as long as you have excellent roommates to share in how much it objectively sucks. Raven and Anya fit that bill, so she considers herself lucky.

Plus, their windows open into an alleyway between their apartment building and the next. Which might not sound like a plus, but when the alternative is street facing windows that do nothing to stop the sounds of drunk college students when you’re trying to sleep the night before a midterm—the difference is staggering.

So, suffice it to say, Clarke largely likes her apartment. It’s great, for what it is.

Until it betrays her.

The first thing Bellamy Blake says when he comes in for his shift at the bookstore—the Monday morning shift, that, unfortunately, she shares—is, “Nice moves last night, Princess.”

Most of the time, Bellamy is full of shit, but as he shucks off his jacket the smirk on his face says he’s getting away with something, so she quickly runs through the events of the previous night, searching for any instances of embarrassment he might have been privy to.

…and comes up with nothing. She didn’t go out after she’d come back from class, and she and Raven didn’t get drunk, precluding any chance that she’d sent out some drunken snapchats he might have seen. (She has him on snapchat for bookstore-related emergencies, alright?) In fact, she spent most of the night working on her chem lab assignment, finally finishing around midnight, so really, there’s nothing for him to have seen.

So she scoffs, dismissive, and keeps working, only mildly interested in what kind of scheme he’s running.

“What are you talking about?” she asks, clicking through their schedule to see if they have any deliveries scheduled today.

He grins at her, wide, just when she spares him a glance, and she has to physically force it to not affect her. Because Bellamy Blake might be a snarky asshole, but that doesn’t make him any less… well, hot. Which is a whole other level of unfair.

“It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Everyone needs to jam to Taylor Swift once in a while. It’s a good de-stressor. I’m not judging.”

“You have to stretch,” Chanyeol says in your ear. “C’mon, just a little farther.”

“It’s all about flexibility,” Yixing adds from your other side. “You have to be flexible to make something beautiful with us, Y/N.”

“Guys,” you groan, struggling to do as they say. Finally, it’s too much and you slam your palms against the piano keys in defeat, wincing at the jarring sound. “It’s impossible. I just can’t reach all the keys at once – my hands are too small. I don’t know how people do this.”

You’re sitting on the bench of the grand piano in the EXO dorm room with Yixing and Chanyeol on either side of you, and the three of you are trying to write a song together for Junmyeon’s birthday. Only, two years of piano lessons in grade school really isn’t a huge help to you right now, especially since you’re not much bigger than you were as a kid. All that’s changed is your face has gotten more angular and your body has filled out, to your relief. But you still have child hands. And it sucks.

Baekhyun and Sehun are there too, sprawled on the couch and blowing up balloons in the middle of goofing around. Kyungsoo is sitting on the loveseat and flipping through a Martha Stewart magazine (you’d bought it for him as a joke but he’d accepted the gift seriously), trying to find the perfect birthday cake recipe. Early afternoon sunlight is pouring through the glass doors of the living room, the television is on and serving as peaceful background noise, and you’re surrounded by your closest friends. You’re distracted briefly from your frustration by this happy realization, and you smile to yourself. How lucky you are to have been blessed with them in your life.

“Your hands aren’t that small,” Chanyeol nudges your shoulder, pulling you from your thoughts.

You scowl. “Oh yeah? Hold up yours.” Biting his lip, he does and you place your palm against his. The tips of your fingers just barely reach his knuckles. “You were saying, Yeol?” The three of you laugh, and Chanyeol laces his fingers with yours, placing your twined hands against his chest.

“Maybe I’ll just teach you the drums,” he chuckles and you sigh wryly. That’s when you feel something – the intangible sensation of someone watching you – and you look over to find Kyungsoo’s eyes on you. Specifically, on your hand in Chanyeol’s. For some reason, you feel the need to pull your hand back, but Kyungsoo quickly looks away before you can move.

“Why don’t I take a break?” you turn back to Yixing and Chanyeol. “You guys keep working. You’ll probably make actual progress without my non-musical ass in the way.”

“What ass?” Sehun calls from the other side of the room. “The only one with an ass here is me, proud founder of the Sebooty, established 1994.”

“Yeah, well at least I don’t store all my talent in my butt,” you retort cheerfully.

“And where do you store yours?”

You gesture to your chest. “In my boobs, like any other respectable woman.” Sehun sputters while the rest of the boys crack up – except Kyungsoo, you notice. He’s been acting strange lately. You’ve always had a rather crude sense of humor, which is why the boys feel so comfortable around you, and Kyungsoo used to laugh right along with everyone else. But now even the most unassuming things will put him off, and he’ll draw away from you as if you’ve done something wrong. It makes you sad, but you’re not sure how to bring up the subject to him, or if you even should. After all, it could have nothing to do with you, and you were never one to jump to conclusions anyway.

Deciding that you’ll show him some extra attention to help draw him out of his shell, you head over to the loveseat and plop down beside Kyungsoo, setting you head on his shoulder. He seems to thaw a bit at this and playfully knocks his head against yours.

“How’s the cake quest going?” you ask as you scan the glossy magazine pages on his lap. “Please tell me we’re not doing red velvet. Not tonight, anyway,” you wiggle your brows at Baekhyun and he cackles. But you really don’t have a clue what kind of cake Myeon would want.

Of all the EXO boys, Junmyeon is the member you’re the most respectful towards, only because you’ve never had the chance to really spend time with him and become familiar with him. As the leader, he has the most responsibilities and therefore the least free time. “What flavor does Myeon oppa like? I’m guessing he’d go for something classy like pineapple-upside-down or marble.”

Kyungsoo’s shoulder feels stiff beneath your cheek. “What makes you say that?”

You shrug. “He’s a classy guy. He’s like Suave shampoo personified, so I figure his tastes are the same too. I know, I’ll ask Minseok.” You slide your phone out of your jeans pocket, about to text Minseok who’s out with the rest of the Distract-Junmyeon-From-the-Surprise-Party-Team, when you see that you have unread messages from Jongdae. Grinning, you open up the chat.

There’s a picture of Junmyeon standing in front of the mirror in a dressing room hallway, checking himself out. He’s dressed almost formally in well-fitting slacks, a maroon button-down shirt, and a gray tie. You notice that he looks…nervous.

Fearless leader thinks we’re helping him get ready for a blind date, Jongdae wrote under that. Then there’s another picture. You enlarge it to see a photo of a pretty girl, taken from behind, and you’re marveling at the way the dress she’s wearing accents her toned legs and surprisingly broad shoulders – and then your eyes fall on the next picture, and you clap your hand over your mouth, guffawing.

Maybe he should go through the whole date blind, Jongdae captioned it. You agree, because the last picture shows the girl’s face – except it’s not a girl, it’s Jongin. Wearing a dress and a wig and heels, smiling seductively at the camera.

Damn, she fine, you type back and hit send, wiping tears from your eyes.

“What’s so funny?” Kyungsoo asks with a small smile. He’s watching you almost as if he’s memorizing the way you laugh.

“Jongdae,” you shake your head. Leave it to him, Minseok, and Jongin to pull such a trollish stunt. Poor Junmyeon. But it would be all the more sweet to then come back to a surprise party.

“Ah,” Kyungsoo says quietly. “Jongdae.” You feel his body beside you expand and contract with a silent sigh, and then he gets up, murmuring, “I’m gonna go make that cake now.” And he walks away, disappearing into the kitchen. You watch him go, then look down at the loveseat where the magazine with the recipes still rests. Aish. What is with this boy? You run a hand through your hair, grab the magazine, and head after him into the kitchen.

He’s gathering ingredients when you arrive, vanilla extract, eggs, sugar, flour. Without a word, you join him, retrieving the baking ware from the drawers. You set it all on the counter neatly beside the magazine and when he joins you at the counter, still not looking at you, you slide your arms around him and pull him into a hug. After a moment, his arms come around you too and he buries his face in the crook of your neck. Something’s definitely off with him, you’re sure of it now, and his unnamed pain makes your heart clench.

“I’m sorry,” you exhale.

“For what?” He sounds genuinely confused – and muffled.

“For whatever it is that I’m doing to make you sad. You’re so important to me, Kyungsoo-yah, and I would never intentionally hurt you. You know that, right?”

At this, Kyungsoo pulls away to examine your face. “Is that what you think?” You’re taken aback at the surprise in his voice, how visibly upset he is. “That you’re hurting me? Y/N, you could never hurt me. Seeing you only brings me happiness – you only make my day better. Aish.” He tugs you against him again and tucks you under his chin, and you embrace him back with relief.

“But then what is upsetting you?”

It’s a long moment before he replies and when he does, all he says is, “Me.”

Before you can respond to this, Baekhyun suddenly waltzes into the kitchen with his phone in his hands. “Minseok just texted saying we only have a couple more hours to prepare, so to ‘hurry the fuck up’.” He glances up from his phone and sees you and Kyungsoo still embracing, and he smiles slyly. “Are we working hard or hardly working here, slackers?”

“Says the guy who blew a grand total of two balloons,” you roll your eyes, untangling yourself from Kyungsoo.

“Point taken. Maybe you can give me some tips on the art of…blowing.”

To your right, Kyungsoo snatches the magazine from the counter and flips through the pages at a speed too quick to actually read anything. “Maybe you can get off your lazy ass and actually help us,” he snaps.

“Sure,” Baekhyun says brightly. He comes over to stand at attention by your side, but Kyungsoo drags him away and points to the ingredients. “Start measuring those out.”

“Yes, sir.”

“You picked what kind of cake we’re making?” you ask Kyungsoo.

He looks up at you with the softest eyes, and you feel a strange flutter in your chest. “Marble,” he nods. “Like you said, it’s what Junmyeon would want. And I hope we all get what we want someday.”

Between the three of you, the cake gets done pretty quickly. Somewhere in the middle of it all, Baekhyun puts music on, and now you’re all singing along loudly to an old Girls Generation song as you work. Baekhyun is pouring the batter into a pan, shaking his hips in time to the rhythm, while Kyungsoo expertly pares an orange across a zester to collect tangy garnish. You’re in the zone yourself as you whip the life out of the milk, butter, sugar, and vanilla to make frosting, and you belt out the chorus of the song with the boys, a horrible harmony to their lovely melodies. Whatever, you don’t care. You’re having fun.

Baekhyun carefully moves the now-full pan into the oven and yells, “Touchdown!” as he closes it. You and Kyungsoo whoop and high-five him, and you set down the frosting, satisfied with it.

“Guys, taste this and tell me if it’s good,” you say. You dip your finger in and hold out a dollop to Kyungsoo, who scrapes it off with a spoon and gives it try.

“Ah, that’s perfect,” he grins and returns to his zesting.

“I wanna try,” Baekhyun chimes in and you wave him over, holding out another dollop to him. Unlike Kyungsoo, however, he doesn’t have a spoon so he just catches your finger in his hand and puts it in his mouth, maintaining eye contact all the while. You wrinkle your nose and pull away, laughing, and Baekyun licks his lips approvingly – and then you hear a sharp gasp.

You look over just as Kyungsoo tears his gaze from you and Baekhyun to his hand – that’s now bleeding. He drops the grater with a curse.

“Oh, Soo, are you okay?” You hurry over to him, but he just shuffles over to the sink to rinse his wound.

“Should I get the medical kit?” Baekhyun asks, all joking gone. “Do you need stitches?”

“I’m fine,” he says gruffly. “Just…finish the cake. You two don’t really need me at this point anyway.” And with that, he shuts the tap off and stalks out of the kitchen, and you’re left staring after him yet again.

You sink against the counter and pinch the bridge of your nose. “Why does he get like this?” you mutter. “One minute, we’re best friends, and the next, he won’t even look at me.”

Baekhyun turns the music off on his phone and rolls his eyes. “C’mon, Y/N. He’s just tired of your games, that’s all.”

You straighten immediately and stare at him. “What are you talking about? I’m not playing any games.”

“Yeah, you are. You’re playing hard-to-get, and honestly, even I was getting tired of watching it. Why do you think I was flirting so obviously with you? I was trying to get your boy to finally make a move because I didn’t think you were ever going to.”

“You—he—wait, what?” This is too much to process at once, and you stare at the bloody zester in wonder. Kyungsoo…likes you? And that’s why he’s so upset? Because he thinks you’re toying with him?

“But wait,” you shake your head. “He told me earlier that he wasn’t upset with me, he’s upset with himself. That doesn’t fit with your story.”

Baekhyun considers this, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. “Why would he be mad at himself?” he muses. “Maybe he thinks he’s not trying hard enough to win you over. And what would give him that idea?” Baekhyun’s eyes slide to yours and widen. “Does he even know that you like him?”

You’re at a loss for words.

Baekhyun’s gaze is piercing on you, and then he lets out a little incredulous laugh. “Do you like him, Y/N?”

The pieces are slowly coming together in your head and in harmony with your heart, and you place your hand over your chest, feeling the racing pulse. What an idiot, you are. I hope we all get what we want someday. Someday is today, you realize. “Yes,” you murmur. And then again, louder, “Yes.”

“Well, then go end the game! Tell him that he won!” You snap to your senses and nod, racing out of the kitchen, past the living room when you see he’s not there, and up the stairs to his room. But now that you’re here, on the literal and metaphorical threshold of something so amazing, you’re not sure how to proceed. You can’t just barge in and say, Hey, I just realized I love you, let’s get married and have babies. And he’s hurting too, in many different ways, and he probably thinks you have a thing for Baekhyun – which is horrifying, and you’ve never done something like this before and—

“Y/N?” You whirl around to find Kyungsoo behind you. So he wasn’t even in his room. Of course.

“Hi Kyungsoo-yah,” you manage. You’re nervous – god, why are you so nervous? Your hands are clammy and your stomach is in knots and why haven’t you noticed before how lovely his eyes are and how soft his lips look and how beautiful his smile is—

He’s smiling. Why is he smiling? You’re about to ask him, when he catches your face gently between his hands and places the most tender kiss on your mouth. You gasp a little against his lips before melting into him. He’s so reverent with you, in the way he holds you against him and kisses you that it takes you a moment to open your eyes when he pulls back.

“You…heard what I said in the kitchen?” you guess.

Kyungsoo quirks a brow in amusement. “No. Chanyeol told me that I hit the lotto, and I just never went to collect my prize.”

You groan. “Were they all in on this? This scheme to get us together?”

“Apparently.”

“Well, in that case,” you grin and tug him closer by the collar of his shirt. “You can call me monster.”

Hi! I'm writing a story settled in a future where after a war, people built a new society. I've noticed that my setting is extremely vague and confusionary. I don't know when i have to insert details since i'm writing in 1st person. Like, I jave characters, I have a decent plot, I have a nice world building, but when writing I'm leaving the latter out and it's a problem. Do you have any advice? Thanks!

Setting and World Description

I love this question, because I think it’s a really, really common problem, and it’s one I’ve faced on numerous occasions. We’re often told that we should know our setting really, really well, and that we should be able to describe it in great detail. But when it comes time to put that concept into practice in the story, nothing seems to work. It all feels “info-dumpy,” or like we’re trying too hard to paint the picture, and we start to fear that we might be boring our readers, who honestly just want to know what happens in the setting.

So how do we execute setting description in such a way that it’s informative and engaging?

First, the real reason we need all this info…

Imagine you’ve got a small town as your setting, with a major street that runs through it. Along the street, there are several small businesses. During story prep, you may have done sketches of this street, or at least made a small diagram to lay out where all the businesses are. You may have even gotten really detailed and dotted bus stops or traffic lights, to the point where you can visualize this street perfectly

So now you go to write your first chapter. Your protagonist leaves home and walks down the street towards the bus stop to go off to work. As they walk the street, you start thinking, “Man, this is the perfect opportunity to describe all the businesses they’re passing by!” So you start to do that, and it all starts to sound like you’re giving directions. “To the left of the flower shop is the post office,” and so on, and so on.

But here’s the big revelation to this whole conundrum. Just because you know it, doesn’t mean you have to show it.

The reason it’s encouraged to do so much setting development isn’t so you can pass it on to your reader. At least, not everything. It’s so you know where things are, and you can navigate the world better.

Let’s say you did zero setting development, and as you were writing chapter one, you decided to have the protagonist mail a package. You throw in a brief detail about the post office being a two-minute walk from the protagonist’s house. Then, much later, your protagonist is buying some flowers, and you throw in a detail about the post office worker loading a truck outside, because the post office is right next door. And then the protagonist takes the bus home….except, didn’t you say in chapter one that they were just a couple minutes walk from the post office? Are there two post offices? Or did they just take a bus unnecessarily?

See, the real reason it’s so important to know how things are laid out in your setting is so that you don’t make mistakes like this. If you had made a diagram of your town, you would know where all these things were.

Side note: And just to add here, this does not mean that you have to make a diagram of a fictional town before you start writing in it. If you’re not much of a planner, and this sounds awful to you, then just make one as you go. In chapter one, when your protagonist walks to the post office, make a quick little map with a couple squares that shows how close your protagonist is to the post office. And as you mention other buildings, add them to this map. Then you’re not adding extra things you don’t need.

So in conclusion on this point, don’t feel like you have to add in all the details that you’ve worked out ahead of time. There will be some that you need to share with readers, but there will also be many that you only need to help you stay consistent throughout the story.

How do I add the necessary info?

When adding setting details, they need to be relevant. And if they’re not relevant, you need to make them relevant. We’ll continue with our small town/post office/flower shop example.

For the sake of simplicity, we’ll say that the flower shop and the post office are next to each other. If your protagonist is only visiting the post office, then the location of the flower shop is irrelevant. But if the flower shop being there is a detail that you feel the readers should know, or it’s something you want to include as a stylistic choice to add depth to your setting, then we need to make it relevant. So how do we do that?

Give the protagonist a reason to either A) Think about the flower shop or B) Notice something around the flower shop.

  • A) Think about the flower shop.

As she’s waiting in line at the post office, she may have a clear view of the flower shop through the window. But don’t just have her observe it. Have it trigger some kind of thought. Maybe she has a sick friend or relative, and it reminds her that she should buy them some flowers. Or she’s done something wrong, and flowers might be a nice peace offering. Or maybe it reminds her that her garden is overgrown and it needs tending. Any of these thoughts actually trigger deeper plot development, which makes them a double whammy.  Who is sick? What did she do wrong? Why is her garden overgrown? Is it always overgrown or is there something in her life that’s causing her to slack on this?

Whatever route you decide to go with, you’ve now made that flower shop relevant to the protagonist’s inner conflict, even if all it’s doing is triggering something.

  • B) Notice something around the flower shop.

This “something” could be something about the exterior of the building, or an employee they can see through the window or who is out on the street, or it could even be a couple of people standing outside the flower shop talking or doing something. The significance here isn’t so much the flower shop, but rather what’s happening around the flower shop.

In describing whatever is happening, you would say something like, “In front of the flower shop next door…” and then write the situation. In this method, you’re not giving special meaning or significance to the flower shop; you’re simply adding more color to your setting by mentioning that there is one, and a reader can visualize the scene even better if they picture a window of flowers behind whatever is happening. It ends up serving a huge purpose in just a few innocuous words.

The Bigger Picture

Okay, all flower shops and post offices aside, good setting description is integrated when a character “bumps into it,” either literally or figuratively. Describe settings when a character enters them, or when they’re thinking about them. If you feel like the description is necessary, then you need to find a reason to get the character to either go there, or else think about going there, or remember going there. It needs to have context with other story information.

When it comes to complex world-building details, you follow the same principle. If there are unique circumstances that your character has to face in the world you’ve created, explain them in moments when the character is either facing those circumstances, or when they’re thinking about facing them or remembering facing them.

I suppose you could argue that I’m making this more complicated than it needs to be, because there are readers that love description for description’s sake, but for many readers, we need context. We need to know that what we’re reading is telling a story and moving events forward, rather than just informing us or educating us on a story world.

Plan minor story events around exposition. Make things happen in your story that help to reveal the important details of your world and setting. It might seem clunky when you first start doing this, but if you’re patient with yourself, eventually you’ll be integrating description and world backstory like a pro.

Keep going!
