which is saying something on this show with all its great relationships

timetravelturtle  asked:

Responding to your post about twist endings and Rod Serling: Do you think that the "No, Luke, I am your father" reveal in Empire Strikes Back works as a powerful twist? It's hard to view it as anything but obligatory after almost 40 years of references but at one point it was truly shocking, I think. Still, I'm not sure if the themes that the reveal serves are actually important to the work or if they just match the reveal.

Comparing the “I am your father” ending to the Twilight Zone/Scifi Proposition-Argument-Conclusion ending is like comparing a dolphin to a torpedo; they look the same, but they work in very different ways.

I think it’s important to emphasize here that the ending IS what your story is trying to say; the ending IS the story. If you have a story about the hazards of love that cynically shows how bad relationships can be…but the hero finds true love at the end, it’s an optimistic story that says true love and happiness is possible and relationships are great. The ending is what your story is trying to say.

Now, that said, the reason that the Darth Vader reveal has oomph can only be understood if you look at the Empire Strikes Back script by Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote maybe one of my favorite Westerns, Silverado (I love Westerns as much as scifi, but considering the nature of this blog, that part of my personality doesn’t come up much). It’s worth noting that most scifi writers have an understanding of the basics, something that transfers from genre to genre; the fundamentals of storytelling are the same. Rod Serling won Emmys for drama long before Twilight Zone, for instance.

You can understand what Empire Strikes back is all about from the title, which wasn’t carelessly chosen. It’s a story about how the Rebels are on the run; they are running in the night, and the wolves are after them. It’s impossible to stand and fight. The opening has the rebels in exile in a miserable icy location, from which they are forced to flee.

As the story goes on, things get worse and worse. The heroes are betrayed and have no place to hide. Luke does the impetuous yet loyal and courageous thing to help his friends before he’s ready, which the wise Yoda raises the stakes for by saying that Luke will fail totally if he confronts Darth Vader. The scene on Dagobah with Yoda and Obi-Wan fills us with dread for the meeting to come and raises the stakes for the battle to come; that’s the purpose of the scene.

Are you getting it, now? The point of the story is to have the Empire victorious, to show the sacrifice and loss a rebellion would need. And when Luke goes to see Vader, he has his hand chopped off and his lightsaber lost; he never stood a chance. And that, at the very conclusion of the film, is when the biggest bombshell of all is dropped: Darth Vader is Luke’s father.

The Darth Vader reveal wouldn’t have worked if it came in the middle of the film. It worked because the entire film had been building to it, with loss after loss to the Empire. It’s the ultimate thing to make a hero totally despair in a story that’s all about losing (note that after learning this Luke has no option but to jump to his death). The twist isn’t just thrown in there out of nowhere; the entire film had been building to it, and it’s the final “knockout punch.”

To have an ending like this, you have to identify what your story is about and what it’s trying to say, so you can convince the audience of it. As Brian McDonald says, “lots of young writers ask me if they are being too preachy. Not enough ask me if they are being sufficiently clear.”

the bayard is the paladin is the lion: a season 3 prediction

Alternatively titled: Watch This Child Jeopardize Her GPA in Real Time As She Ignores Her Midterms to Write Yet Another Fucking Meta

The lovely @littleblackchats already wrote an awesome post about the symbolism of the bayards for each of the characters in Voltron. But I was wondering: could we take it a step further and use the weapons - and what they say symbolically about the paladins wielding them - to make an informed guess about who’s going to end up in what lion next season?

(even if the answer to that question is no, i’m already writing this so whatever)

Since Allura, Keith, and Lance are the most likely to be swapped into new lions (or, in Allura’s case, to be put into a lion for the first time), I thought it’d be cool to take a look at what the weapons each of them wields says about their personalities, and whether that can give us hints as to who’s gonna be the Black Paladin next season while Shiro’s gone.

Alright, so in episode 1, Allura tells us that a lion’s quintessence is mirrored in its paladin, and that the paladin shapes the bayard. So lion = paladin = bayard. The lion and paladin should be similar in personalty, and the bayard should be compatible to the paladin’s style of fighting and personality as well. This is shown really well in Hunk and Pidge: Pidge’s weapon is small (like her), electric (reflecting her interest in computers), and made for precision (Pidge is more interested in finding clever solutions than just brute-forcing problems), while Hunk’s is big (just like him), long-range (reflecting his wish to stay distanced from conflict), and packs a punch (Hunk is the strongest character on the team, after all).

So the weapons tell us something about the personalities of the ones using them. But what can their respective weapons tell us about Keith, Lance, and Allura?

AU where Bitty and Jack both suddenly wake up, after having had a few years together, and find themselves in their beds on the morning of the day they met. Both remember everything that happened, but neither thinks the other does, so they both pretend not to remember (which only complicates things more). They end up reenacting a lot of their interactions and it kills them both to do things they know hurt the other but they don't want to change anything.

oh no buddy, I’m not gonna let this stay sad. I’m gonna draw attention to several sad things, but then I’m gonna fix it.

******************

Bitty wakes up on his first day of freshman year. Again. He quickly decides that he can’t say anything to anyone. There was no way to prove that the life he had just been living was anything but a dream.

He goes through the motions as well as he can remember. If he lingers a little on the handshake when he ‘meets’ Jack again, well, who could notice a thing like that?

Jack wakes up in the Haus. He mirrors Bitty’s mental process, realizing that if he started talking about this he could lose the future he knows is on its way. He searches Bittle’s face for recognition, but is too afraid to say anything.

Jack takes a deep breath every day and snaps at Bittle, pushing every pet name out of his mind. Bitty forces himself to forget and relearn how to take a check. On the rink together for checking practice, neither can think of any way to ask if they’re going through the same thing. They both cry more than they did the first time around.

Sometimes Bitty just gets angry at having to repeat things. He tries as hard as he can to not mess the repetitions up, but he isn’t perfect. When Ransom and Holster start asking him what his type is, he rolls his eyes and replies “Men.” As soon as he’s said it he remembers that he had only said that later to his camera, but the damage doesn’t seem to be too great. Jack doesn’t seem to react to the change, adding to his mental list of evidence that everything else had just been a dream. He gets the list of eligible Winter Screw options a few days earlier, but everything settles back to what it had been within a week. Whenever he starts thinking about the next few years, he’s enraged about everything he’s going to have to sit back and let happen. Everything that was going to make Jack sad, and that he wouldn’t be able to fix. Everything that was going to hurt him that he couldn’t avoid.

Jack wakes up every day and writes up a game plan. It’s hard to have to turn back years of learning and be worse as a captain, especially when he remembers every mistake he made in every lost game. So he writes down those mistakes as a reminder to himself to make them. Half of the mistakes are emotional, and that’s what really gets him. He’s forced to act like those years of growing as a person never happened, like they were worthless. He hates trying to make himself glare at Bittle when they’re on the same line, he hates telling him that it was a lucky shot, he hates being so close to his boyfriend except for the fact that he isn’t his boyfriend yet.

Then it’s the playoffs. Bitty steels himself all week for the concussion he knows is coming. It crosses his mind to try to avoid it, to spare himself the pain and potential brain damage. But he remembers that it was only after the concussion that Jack started texting him, and they really got close. He knows that if he went against the play he knew Jack was going to suggest, he’d only drive them apart. Besides, it hadn’t been that bad the first time.

Jack is confident he can find another reason to text Bittle over the summer. He’s thought about this for the whole school year. Whatever consequences could come from not seeing Bitty hurt like that would be worth it. He just has to convince the coaches to not put Bitty in at the wrong time.

“Oh my god, I thought we got over this months ago,” Bitty mutters to himself. He doesn’t remember Jack getting so annoyed about playing with him during this game, but he’s at a point where everything has run together in his mind.

“Jack, I’ll be fine,” he half-lies. He will, eventually. There’s something close to panic in Jack’s eyes. Weird, Jack had taken so long the first time around to show any tiny sign of weakness.

“Promise me you’ll avoid number three.” This is definitely different from before. Bitty stares at Jack. “Spencer, number three, don’t go near him when he’s on their side of the rink. Promise me, Bits.”

“You didn’t even call me Bitty at this point,” he says in shock. They stare at each other for a minute, eyes wide.

“I won’t get the concussion this time and we’ll talk about this after the game,” Bitty blurts out. Jack nods vigorously. They play, and it’s brutal, but Bitty avoids the hip check. Once the game is over, they rush to get seats together in the bus. In whispers, they talk about the future they already had. Bitty mourned the years of school he had ahead of him that he had already completed. Jack complained about having to rewalk a long path to the Stanley Cup. They talked about teammates who felt like family but would still know them as strangers. Graduation, the Fourth of July they spent in Madison, their first Christmas together. Every important milestone of their relationship.

“And in this loop or timeline or whatever, we haven’t even kissed!” Bitty whispers, letting his head thunk back against the headrest. “I was at the point where I was out of college, happy with my career, and hiding a ring from you!”

“You weren’t!” Jack says out loud before dropping back into a whisper. “I was doing the same thing.” They both start laughing. It’s the perfect time to have a second first kiss. They lean in towards each other, their lips meet, and–

–They’re back in their apartment. Bitty sits bolt upright in their bed and turns to Jack. For a fleeting second, he thinks about pretending the last several months just didn’t happen. Jack sits up too, and their eyes meet.

“Did that just–”

“Your frog year take two–” They dissolve into relieved laughter.

“I thought I was going to have to take calc again!”

“I thought I was going to have to listen to you complain about calc again,” Jack says before Bitty smacks him with a pillow. “Kidding! Kind of! Wait, weren’t we just saying that we wanted to propose to each other?” He throws himself out of bed and runs to start rummaging through various coat pockets.

“Oh no, you’re not going to propose to me before I can propose to you!”

Everything is as it should be once more.

Give Me Polyamorous Power Couple Hamliza Or Give Me Death

~Eliza growing up having constant crushes on both men and women and trying to articulate what she wanted to Angelica but never being able to explain it the way she wanted

~When she’s in a relationship: “I want her” “But you’re dating Peter” “I want him too” “But you have to choose” “Why do I have to choose?” When she’s not in a relationship: “Ooh, Liza’s got a crush! Spill it!” “Well, there’s Arthur and his girlfriend, and Sally and her girlfriend, and Jason, and Mary…” “Whoa whoa whoa, slow down, how many crushes can you have?” “Shush, I’m not done”

~When she meets Alexander and quickly falls into her most serious relationship ever she expects the multiple crush thing to stop (Spoiler alert: it doesn’t)

~Eliza feels like a horrible girlfriend because she’s so happy with Alex but then Susan from work will start up a conversation with her in the break room and she’s instantly all heart eyes

~Tearfully she admits it to Alex one night and he’s thrilled because “no there’s nothing wrong with you I promise!!!! You’re just polyamorous!!!!”

~They spend the rest of the night talking about it

~Eliza needs some time to adjust since she’s spent so much time trying to push it aside that she doesn’t really know what else to do but Alex is very helpful

~The first time she tells him about Susan he’s instantly chanting ask her out over and over until she’s laughing and blushing at his antics

~Half a year later and Eliza is subtly sending Alex updates from her dates while he sends her multiple thumbs up emojis and does the same with his own

~She also sets up him and Angelica and when Angelica gets confused about it she’s like you need to stop sacrificing yourself, let yourself be happy

~They share embarrassing stories about him with each other

~He meets John and them after Eliza in this one and it’s all separately

~Hercules comes first because Eliza’s father invited them to a fancy dinner party and Alex needs a suit and since he’s not well educated on these things yet she comes along to help

~Hercules is instantly smitten with Alex and Alex is instantly 😍 because “Eliza look at him!!! He looks like a damn quarterback but he’s so sweet and gentle!!!!” “Either you ask him out or I will”

~Hercules not-so-subtly likes guiding Alex around even though he thinks he’s being smooth

~“Alex there was really no point for him to put his hands on your waist like that, he could’ve told you to just move to the side one step” “… Yeah but did you see how well they fit there he could probably lift me up so easily” “Wow you’re so easy” “Do I need to bring up that cute barista the other day” “pLEASE DO WE HAVE A DATE THIS WEEKEND”

~By the end of the time there Alex is going out to lunch with a pleased but confused Hercules and Eliza is eagerly awaiting every cute picture and text

~From then on he has to deal with both Eliza and Alex stealing his clothes but he can’t really fight since they both look so cute in his sweaters

~The rest come really quickly after that

~Lafayette meets Hercules before the others because they come in requesting a special dress to be made and Hercules is Gone

~“You… You want a dress with a full skirt… But when you pick at a stitch on it the dress falls down into a ball gown?” “Yes, exactly!” “Can I ask why?” “Why? Well, chéri, it’s because I must ensure that I always am prepared for any eventuality and at the top of that list is a need to always look beautiful but entirely unattainable. Oh, that reminds me! It needs to be floor length with my being in eight-inch heels, I have a pair with me so you can measure accurately” “Oh holy shit”

~It takes them exactly one weekend to be brought into the relationship (Alex sees them and instantly is stunned into silence, Eliza flirts and within two minutes they’re already co-conspirators)

~John is next and he struggles with his sexuality and anything that comes from it so he’s very much in the closet when they meet

~John and Alex immediately are best friends and Alex tries asking him out but John very quickly refuses him and Alex takes a step back

~The combined power of the four of them helps to bring John out of his shell even though he’s very shy about it all so they’re respectful and let him suggest everything and move their relationship forward in his own time

~The first time he asks to spend the night with all of them there’s a little fight over who gets to sleep next to him

~Eliza and Hercules win, Lafayette and Alex pout

~Aaron and Theodosia Burr AKA Theo, Eliza, and Lafayette kill and the rest of them are literally powerless against them

~Dates are really fun with them because now there’s enough people to go on group dates and everyone can have a supposed other instead of it being just the mess of them (They still do it as the whole of them, its just more fun to have the people think they’re all separate couples then watch as they get more affectionate as the night goes on)

~Don’t think I’ve forgotten about the Washingtons

~George favors Alex and Laf, Martha favors Eliza, Angelica, and Theo, George is platonic with John, Hercules, Aaron, and the girls, Martha is platonic with everyone but her girls and sometimes Alex and Lafayette (She likes showing off that she’s perfectly capable of stealing them away from him but is graciously letting them stay with him. George jokes back and tries to rally Laf and Alex to joke too but they need time to come back to that plane of existence)

~WEEKEND TRIPS AT MOUNT VERNON WITH EVERYONE

~Eliza and Alex get so many kisses and cuddles since they’re the heart of it all

~Alex dragging everyone outside to look at the stars

~Lots of hot chocolate when Alex drags them outside

~Lots of spiked hot chocolate when they think Martha isn’t looking

~She totally knows since John keeps giggling but she let’s them have fun

~THOMAS JEFFERSON

~Eliza starts flirting with him to bug Alex

~Eventually she starts flirting with him for Alex no matter what he says

~“Look at the tension good god” “Betsey I swear…”

~Eliza has a near constant stream of frustrated texts from George

~“Eliza I’m suffering” “What is it this time, dear?” “They’re arguing again and they look two seconds away from making out” “I’m working on it. Have patience” “I can’t have patience anymore I can’t have meetings because this happens in every one”

~All the hate sex

~All the Jeffmads+Alex hate sex (I would include Aaron but the frustrations are over Washington but Aaron knows why Alex is favored by him and has worked out his own balance with George so he’s not jealous)

~Alex pulls them into the dynamic and they finally understand

~George doesn’t mind them finding out, he’s just glad the tension is gone (Though he has cut more than a few work days short because he walked in on them fucking on his desk because Alex wanted to tease him and he can’t handle that so he just walks out)

~There’s multiple incidents where they try to tease Angelica but she is Not Having It and takes great joy in showing them why

~Angelica Schuyler is my queen she wouldn’t handle any bullshit from them

~MARIA REYNOLDS PROTECTION SQUAD

~Elizabeth “If you touch one hair on my girl’s head I will personally kick your ass from here to California don’t test me” Schuyler

~Obviously she moves in with them immediately and spends every night sleeping between Alex and Eliza

~When things become too much in the city Eliza and her take a trip down to Mount Vernon for a girls-only retreat

~Maria and John never start a romantic relationship but they hit it off very quickly since they’re both abuse survivors (Her with James, him with his father) and John is more healed than she is but there’s wounds he’s still licking and sometimes its nice to just spend the day in silence with someone who understands that company is more important than conversation

~Eliza and Alex creating a crazy huge family for themselves which has confusing interconnecting romantic and platonic relationships but they love it so much they can’t describe it

~Whenever anyone asks about it Alex shows them the graph he’s made for them all

~Everyone has a specific color and one poor soul asks why he chose those colors and spends the next 45 minutes listening to him talking about why each of his signifs was given that very color choice

You were immersed in a deep sleep, tired from working on a large project that was worth half your grade. In you attempt to disconnect from the world around and sleep peacefully, you blocked out the sounds and all touch with reality. The sudden dip in your bed didn’t bother you, the presence of another body and an arm haphazardly wrapping around you, these were things you were blocking out. Until you felt a finger on your cheek.

“Hey, roomie.”

“I hate you.”

“You know you love me.”

“Kiss my ass, Jimin.” You used to think you were lucky to be paired up with your best friend in the dorms of your university. Until you realized he was a clingy, sassy and messy guy that never failed to annoy you. His leisure attitude towards school was opposite to your dedication to reading every word of your textbook. He was a jock, baseball being the reason he was here in your room and cheekily smiling at you.

“I wouldn’t mind doing that.” You whacked him in the face with your pillow, wanting him to leave your room but he instead pulled you closer against his chest.

“Let go of me, you pervert.”

“You told me to kiss your ass, now…”

“I swear to god, Jimin, I’ll suffocate you in your sleep.”

“Kinky. I always wanted to test out breath play.”

I think, too, that part of the reason why this episode and this arc is hitting so hard is because it wound up being a really intensely honest portrayal of depression and substance abuse in a livestreamed D&D game. That’s… not something you necessarily expect to be signing up for when you start watching, especially since that particular character arc started off as purely comedic.

Sam has talked about how the whole cast has played the same characters for so many years that they feel a real responsibility to be honest and genuine with their choices, and he’s also said that he feels he owes it to the people he knows who’ve been through this not to take it lightly and to portray it as accurately as he can.

And the thing about that kind of honesty? It really hurts to watch, especially if you’re not sure whether resolution and catharsis are coming anytime soon. I had a rough time getting through 85, because both Scanlan’s lashing-out and understandable-but-unfair attacks on his friends and VM’s well-meaning but just-the-wrong-thing-to-say responses were deeply, personally familiar as the things you hear both from folks who have never been through it and from folks who know exactly where you’re at but whose depression manifested in a different way that happened to catch fewer people in the crossfire (Vax in particular comes to mind there—he was saying the things he needed to hear from a friend back then, which were not the things Scanlan needed to hear in the moment). It hurt because it was raw, because there’s no easy way to put somebody at fault for the conflict, and because the other players were reacting so genuinely with such a familiar combination of betrayal, defensiveness, anger, frustration, and above all hurt and concern.

For me, personally, the episode was cathartic in a strange sort of way, because Scanlan was able to remove himself from the part of his life that was the epicenter of his misery, and he was able to recognize that the only thing that had a chance in hell of pushing him toward recovery was getting to know his daughter as a person rather than as a symbol he couldn’t disappoint (sound familiar to his relationship with Pike?). Sam’s talked and hinted for a while now about how Scanlan’s been putting more and more pressure on himself to be something different since he met Kaylie, and you just know that a lot of Scanlan’s “how could you not recognize there was something wrong with me?” comments were directed toward himself as well as the group.

And to me, the thing that kept the episode from descending into a horrible morass of hurt feelings was the moment when everyone in the argument sort of took a step back and had that realization of “okay, this is a fight, this is a serious fight we’re having, and it’s because we’re family”. Because this show’s always, always emphasized the validity and importance of the family you make, and despite some very serious conflicts that come up between them, the love’s always there and no conflict is flat-out insurmountable. Some conflicts can’t be resolved with constant painstaking conversation, some wounds can’t keep getting exposed to the air if you want them to heal properly, and Scanlan recognized that things were just going to get worse if he didn’t have some time to himself for a while.

So… it’s rough, but one of the biggest strengths of this show is its ability to evoke pathos without wallowing, to find hope and humor and fun even in the worst places imaginable, and this whole mess with Taryon felt like the best possible way to keep that narrative going while still giving the characters agency and treating this thing with the gravity it deserves. It’s going to be challenging, and everyone’s gonna be raw and grieving for a while, but I honestly think the end result’s going to be worlds more positive and hopeful than what would’ve happened had Scanlan stayed on and continued to spiral. If nothing else, I have a whole lotta trust in these players’ devotion to giving their characters development that isn’t just pain for pain’s sake, so I have no doubt that Scanlan will return at some point.

I joked about how great it is that the group can now band together through their dislike for Taryon, but that’s actually really true—the worst part of 85 was the moment when it looked like the rest of the party might fracture over this loss. But in the end, they all sought each other out in ones and twos throughout the night and came back together in the morning. I’m honestly very excited to get to know the new Vox Machina that survives this (and also kind of wants to kick Taryon’s ass).

Change sucks. No question. But this, to me, felt like a change that was necessary but also hopeful. It felt like the only way forward that didn’t end with a body, and that’s something this show and these characters have always put in the effort to find.

some advice

so, you’re joining the hamilton fandom and want to produce content? great!! scared of the unofficial etiquette in this mess? let me help.
(disclaimer: this is an UNOFFICIAL guideline. i’m aware that this fandom is a problematic mess that’s full of discourse and the only adult ones tend to be actual legal adults. don’t fuckin @ me saying that hur durr i’m wrong and should rot in hell. this is based off personal experience.)

-SHIPS
•Most pairings are accepted. The main ones are Hamilton/Laurens, Hamilton/Burr, Hamilton/Eliza, Jefferson/Madison, Jefferson/Hamilton, Washington/Lafayette, Maria/Eliza (or any Schuyler sister rly) and Mulligan/Lafayette. These usually have the most content, but also contain the most discourse. There’s also some major minor character ships out there; Lee/Seabury, Lee/KG3, Seabury/KG3 etc. I found Eacker/Philip H smut once. This fandom is literally the reason why Rule 34 exists. If it exists, there is porn of it.
•Polyamorous ships are widely accepted. I don’t ship any personally, but a few big ones are Hamilton/Eliza/Laurens, Laurens/Hamilton/Lafayette/Mulligan, Hamilton/Jefferson/Madison, etc. Basically, a lot of people like the idea of Hamilton’s cheating being converted into a happy, consensual relationship that’s polygamous, and that’s okay. (Please note I’m not equating cheating with polyamory. Hamilton being a dirty cheater doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with poly ships if you don’t want, but to me it seems particularly common, especially with the ships containing Hamilton and Eliza.)
•And I know you want to ask; what’s not accepted? Hard question. This fandom loves its angst, so there aren’t many ships that seem untouchable. For the love of God, though, don’t write anything that’s incestuous. I’m talking father/son, sibling/sibling. Don’t make any of Hamilton’s kids end up with the characters in the show. No, Washington/Hamilton doesn’t count as incest, although I personally can’t stand it.
•BASICALLY, don’t be a dick. Also, bear in mind that James Reynolds is the Umbridge of this fandom. If you portray his relationship with Maria as anything less than abusive, there will be riots. I’ve yet to see an (educated) James Reynolds apologist.

-CHARACTERS

•In terms of physical appearance, this fandom is a little wishy-washy on guidelines, unofficial or no. Tip: don’t whitewash if you’re drawing/writing them as their musical characters. Just don’t whitewash in general. This fandom seems to be okay with historical-era fanart and fanfic, which usually involves the characters looking like they did historically, but don’t romanticise them. Don’t romanticise them in general, but especially if you’re making them historical-era.
•SPEAKING OF ROMANTICISING, these characters were BAD PEOPLE. Jefferson owned slaves, Burr owned slaves, Washington owned slaves, the Schuylers owned slaves, evidence points to Hamilton owning at least one slave. Don’t let the Alexander apologists fool you; they were bad people historically. Don’t refer to them, ESPECIALLY I HISTORICAL CONTEXT, as ‘cinnamon rolls’. They were misogynists against the rights of women and minorities. Don’t forget that, no matter how much you like their characters. The Jefferson you like is portrayed by a black Jew; the Jefferson in history was a racist with a history of sexual assault and a slavery apologist.
•KEEPING THAT IN MIND, personality-wise, what we get from the musical is a little murky. Peggy is a great example of this. Fanon Peggy is very outspoken, sarcastic and a typical millenial. In the musical, she’s shy, hides behind her older sisters and very cautious. This is because of the fact that a) Peggy’s vocals are only apparent in one song through listening alone and b) historically Peggy was very similar to fanon Peggy. THIS DOESN’T MATTER. PORTRAY THEM HOWEVER YOU THINK SUITS BEST. Don’t let the musical force you to make Eliza’s main trait be ‘nice’. For all you Laurens stans out there, it’s okay to let him have interests other than art, turtles and Hamilton. Feel free to give them depth, complexities, flaws. Not only is it fucking refreshing amongst the collection of bland chatfics and high school AUs that seem to reduce each character to a single trait, it’s good for original character practice as well.
•THE SCHUYLER SISTERS get their own section. If you’re doing something historical, remember that they had other siblings. It’s generally agreed that Angelica and Eliza were closest, but Angelica and Peggy and Eliza and Peggy are shown in the musical as being close too (see Angelica dancing with Peggy and hugging her in Satisfied, and Peggy helping Eliza put away her letters and being dragged along with her in Helpless and The Schuyler Sisters). Sometimes it seems that fics reduce them to plot devices, minor characters or love interests; I won’t go all 'SJW!1!1!1’ on you but they are their own people as well, and flesh them out. (This problem is not as common in artwork, since art of them tends to focus on them either as a trio or Satisfied and Helpless companion pieces starring Angelica and Eliza.) Also, fun fact that this fandom seems to have overlooked - all three of them could play instruments.
-REVOLUTIONARY SET AND DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICANS. Things to remember include Madison and Hamilton being friends before Jefferson showed up, Jefferson and Lafayette being close, Mulligan historically being Hamilton’s biggest hypeman (oh, I wish I was kidding) and Laurens and Lafayette being close friends. As for Burr, he’s traditionally relegated to the strange outsider by the fandom. This is more of a personal view, but Burr started off as a member of the Revolutionary Set, and progressed into a Democratic Republican, and this fandom likes to forget that.
-THEODOSIA JR. Theodosia is never seen, only mentioned, which basically means everything about her is fanon. Literally. The only confirmed thing about her are her parents. This means Theodosia is good for inserting an audience-type character into; she’s an empty vessel, essentially, so anything you do to her involves zero fact checking. BEAR IN MIND that Theodosia is usually shipped with Philip, and that some members of the fandom will have expectations of her. Ignore those people. Theodosia is a shell of an OC, so as long as you don’t murder her in childhood or something, there’s no real discourse you have to be wary of. (Apart from Philip/Theodosia discourse, which is apparently a thing? But there’s discourse in practically every ship, so by all means, ignore that too.)
•UNMENTIONED/UNSEEN CHARACTERS. I’m talking Ben Franklin, John Adams, James Monroe, Governor Clinton, them. John Adams appears to be universally hated, John Jay is often used as a filler or plot device, and the others are just used as names. Don’t bother about continuity with them.

-SOME COMMON AU IDEAS
•High School/College Modern AU. This is a big one. There are flaws in it, namely romanticising too much and relegating major characters to 'minor’ status, but it’s so widely used that it’s good to know if you’re new here.
•Modern Government/Law AU. Another big one. Not as commonly used because ugh, research and maturity, but there’s a massive pro to them - more complex themes and 'child’ characters can be added because the main lot are usually older. My personal favourite.
•Chatroom AU. What it sounds - no real fic, just usernames and text speak. Good for laughs or plain fights, but bad for complex emotion, fluff, angst, or major plot. Also, they clog up the tags of less major ships, especially on AO3.
•Soulmate AU. A variety of soulmate AUs exist, but essentially boil down to having some kind of matching mark, etc. Amazing for angst, fluff, plot and character development, but not so great for humour or multi-chapter fics.
•Domestic AUs. Exactly as they sound. Massive fluff traps, no real substance but they’re amazing if you’ve had a shitty day and need something to cheer you up. Fan favourite.

So there you go! Everything you need to know if you’re entering the Hamilton fandom, give or take a few things. Don’t bash ships, don’t romanticise them too much, and take Ron Chernow’s content with a pinch of salt (he’s known for 'not finding’ easily accessible content regarding the women of the Hamilverse). Good luck!

Imagine Chris admitting you’re his celebrity crush.

A/N: This is a request from @unstainedlight and it took me forever to get to, I’m so sorry. But here it is, finally! It’s super cute and I’d a lot of fun writing it (as in I giggled a lot) Enjoy! X

You arrived on the ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’ set shortly after your husband, Chris. The two of you came in separate cars because you’d come from your movie set, whereas he came from the hotel you were put up in while working in New York; he wasn’t due to film ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ until May. Both you and Chris had been invited by Jimmy Fallon to do your own respective interviews on your upcoming movies and pending projects, or so the both of you thought. As it turned out, those reasons were just bait given to your publicists to get both of you on his set at the same time without raising suspicion; the man had something cheeky planned.

Jimmy had interviewed Chris numerous times now- one could say that they were friends, so Jimmy knew about Chris’ crush on you. He’d said numerous times now, in most of his interviews, that you were a beautiful actress he admired, with values, morals, and ethics that made him think very highly of you; or in short, that you were his celebrity crush. The thing that Jimmy didn’t know, however, was that they two of you were actually married. You’d met Chris in 2014 while having lunch with your friends, Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. Chris was a good friend of John’s who thought the two of you would hit it off, and you did almost immediately.

After that day, the two of you starting secretly dating under the media’s radar because neither of you wanted the stress that came with having your relationship in the limelight. Both of you had been in the industry for a while now, so you knew what it was like when you started dating someone. The constant scrutiny, the tabloids and the rumors, the analyzing of everything you do and say, the haters and cynics calling the relationship a publicity stunt and waiting for it to blow up- you didn’t want to deal with that. Those were the things that usually ended a Hollywood relationship which was the last thing you and Chris wanted, so things between the two of you were kept under a tight lid.

Your friends and family knew about the relationship, but everyone did as you both asked and kept what they knew to themselves. During your time as boyfriend and girlfriend, you attended all red carpet events alone and took no photos together so you wouldn’t risk revealing your relationship to the world. It was unpractical, difficult, and occasionally lonely, but it worked out. Of course you weren’t going to keep it a secret forever, at some point you were going to want to reveal to the world that you were with the best person you’d ever met; vice versa. You’d both agreed to keep things hush until things were more solidified, and now that the two of you were happily married- the relationship was to be revealed at your movie premiere which was in a week’s time. But perhaps Jimmy’s cheeky little plan to embarrass Chris would move that announcement up.

“Hey stranger,” you called as you caught Chris in your dressing room mirror; he was up first and was walking towards the stage. He poked his head in and shot you a smile which you reciprocated. “Good luck out there, Captain America,” you gave him a two finger salute which made him laugh as he disappeared around the corner with the stage manager.

“Oh my God,” your makeup artist, Arizona, let out the breath she was holding in. “He is so freaking handsome,” she said then chuckled when you laughed. “I’m so glad I’m not the one doing his makeup, I wouldn’t be able to focus.” You said nothing in response as you closed your eyes to let her finish doing your eyeshadow. “Are the two of you friends?”

“I guess,” you shrugged nonchalantly.

“You know you’re his celebrity crush, right?” She was grinning excitedly when you opened your eyes. “As a fan of both you and Chris Evans, I can say that the two of you would make such a great couple.” You had to bite the inside of your cheek to stop from laughing. “You two should really make a movie together, 'cause that’d be amazing.”

“Yeah,” you nodded in agreement.

“Okay,” she sprayed your face with setting spray then tucked a stray hair in its place. “All done, Y/N. You look amazing as always,” she complimented with a sweet smile. “And as always, it’s been an honor to do your hair and makeup. If you ever need a permanent stylist, I’m your girl.”

“Thanks Arizona,” you smiled then saw the stage director enter the room through the mirror. “And that’s my cue,” you told her and rose to your feet. You followed the stage director towards the stage and watched the TV, waiting for Jimmy to introduce you and bring you out.

“So Chris, I’m not sure if you’ve seen the interview your buddy Sebastian did with James Cordon a while back.” Chris’ eyes narrowed slightly as he pondered; he watched most of the interviews his friends and cast mates did. “The one with his celebrity crush, Sharon Stone.” Jimmy reminded him; Chris laughed and nodded. “Well, taking a page out of Cordon’s book- I thought I’d bring your celebrity crush here tonight so you can have the same opportunity to try and win her over with your charm and good looks.”

“Oh God,” Chris laughed. “This is not going to end well, I can tell already.”

“Let’s give Y/N Y/L/N a hand,” Jimmy called and you walked out right on cue. Chris caught your eye and you both tried hard not to crack even though the smiles you had on your faces were enough to give your big secret away. “C'mon Chris,” Jimmy teased as he rose to his feet, joining the audience in giving you a standing ovation. “Get on your feet, give a good impression.”

“Right, sorry.” Chris jumped onto his feet and clapped for you until you got to his side. “Hi Y/N, it’s a pleasure to finally meet you.” He shook your hand then leaned forward to give your cheek a quick peck. “We’re going to blow this, aren’t we?” He whispered into your ear before pulling away; you subtly nodded in response.

“Hi everyone,” you waved at the audience and they cheered for you. “Oh wow,” you began addressing Jimmy as the three of you took your seats. “It is so good to be back here. How are you, Jimmy?” You asked and he laughed.

“I’m meant to be the interviewer here, Y/N,” he joked and you chuckled. “I’m great, and you look great too. The New York air must agree with you. You’ve been out here for a while now, right?” You nodded. “You’re filming your latest movie which takes place in Manhattan, are you having fun?”

“Crazy fun,” you nodded. “I love New York, it’s where I started my career and where some of my best friends live so- yeah, I’m having a lot of fun. New York’s basically like a third home to me,” you told him; beside you, Chris smiled because he knew you refer to LA- your hometown- as home and Boston- his hometown- as your second home.

“Third home?” Jimmy quizzed. “Isn’t the saying second home?” You nodded, chuckling softly. “Okay then, so if New York is your third home then- where’s your second home? I know LA is your hometown, so that’s number one. What’s number two?”

“Boston,” you answered, trying not to smile too widely as you glanced at Chris; he couldn’t hide his grin. “It’s um- it’s a place close to my heart, a lot of my friends are from Boston- like John Krasinski, and it’s also where I fell in-love actually, with a Bostonian.”

“You’re in-love?” Jimmy looked over at Chris and pressed his lips together. “Aw, that’s a bummer.” Both you and Chris laughed at that. “Here I was thinking I was going to set the two of you up 'cause you know, Chris- Captain America, is not shy about admitting who his celebrity crush is.” You chuckled softly as you nodded. “He’s from Boston too, so if you think he’s better than your current love- it wouldn’t be hard to jump ship. Right, Chris?”

“Well,” Chris winced, trying hard not to crack. “If she’s already in-love with someone else, y'know- I’m not going to interfere with that.” You bit the inside of your cheek, stifling your laughs. “If she were single, of course I’d go for it, but she’s in a relationship, man. I can’t do that to a brother,” he tried not to laugh as he said that.

“Think about this, Y/N,” Jimmy tried to sell your husband to you. “Chris is a fan of yours, he is practically in-love with you already.” You looked over at Chris and he nodded in agreement with Jimmy’s statement, holding a serious face that made you want to laugh. “And c'mon, how great can your current guy be compared to Captain America? I mean- the choice is simple, right? Right, guys?” He asked the audience and they cheered. “The two of you would be the new Brad and Angelina, minus the divorce 'cause you’re Chris’ celebrity crush and I doubt he’d do anything to risk losing you.”

“Oh, definitely not,” Chris agreed and you turned away, laughing. “I’d treasure you for the rest of my life, Y/N.” He took your left hand in his, lifting it into vision but hiding your wedding bands. “I’d love you in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, till death do us part. But I think you already know that when we exchanged wedding vows,” he said and revealed the wedding bands; everyone gasped, including Jimmy. “Yeah,” Chris began as you both turned to a stunned Jimmy, chuckling. “I didn’t need your help 'cause I already married my celebrity crush.”

“Oh my God,” Jimmy’s jaw dropped. “How- when- are you guys even- Wait, what?” He laughed, bouncing excitedly in his chair. “When did this even happen? I didn’t even know that you guys knew each other, let alone dated! And you’re married? What the fu-” he cut himself off, his smile wide. “That is amazing, wow! Congratulations, you two! Wow!” The audience cheered and clapped when Jimmy did. “This is exclusive right? No one knew before this moment?”

“Our friends and family know,” you told him, chuckling. “But no one else did, so yes. This is an exclusive on your show. I’m married to Chris Evans,” you said and Chris brought your entwined hands to his lips, kissing the back of your hand.

“Yup,” Chris grinned at you then turned to the camera, “I’m married to my celebrity crush.”

I Think I Wanna Marry You...

Pairing: Dean X Reader.

Warnings: none.

S/P/N- Sister’s Preferred Name.

Summary: The reader, distraught over not having a date to her sister’s wedding, considers asking one of the Winchesters to pretend to accompany her; will Dean manage to save the day and play pretend for two weeks, or will his feelings get the best of him?

A/N: I’m a sucker for these “fake relationship” stories ;))

                                                   ~*~*~*~

Y/N pulls the phone from her ear, her frustration drawn out in the creases in her brow.

“Well?” Dean asks, sat opposite her at the library table. Before him lies an open lore book, on a page about Nordic gods and how to kill them, and his cup of coffee sits dangerously close to the irreplaceable relic. With Sam out doing some shopping, it’s just the two of them at home, trying to dig up some info that might be useful for future use.

Pinching her brow, the young girl shakes her head, waving a dismissive hand.  “Nothing. It’s fine.”

“Ya’ sure?”

“Yes.” She says, trying to sound convincing, but its of no use, because the elder Winchester has known her long enough to see past her facades.

Living together for nearly five years now, calling her his best-friend even feels like an understatement. They got to know each other a while back through a hunt involving a Tulpa in California; Y/N’s kill, but the boy’s happened to jump in on it and help out. Surprise surprise: a friendship sparked,  and ever since then, the relationship has flourished greatly.

To Dean, Y/N is family, just like Cas or Charlie or any of the other members of their little rehabilitation program they’ve picked up over the years. And with that, he knows—well enough—that despite her efforts to dismiss it, something is nudging at her mind.

“Obviously not. You seem like you’re about to explode. What is it?” He shuts the book and leans forward. Y/N still looks exasperated; still tries to act like she isn’t, and fails terribly. When she finally lifts her gaze, her expression is that of defeat.

“It’s my sister.” She says mournfully. “She’s calling me about her wedding coming up this month, and wants to know if I’ve been signed up to the family news letter that allows me to see all the updates on things like which floral arrangement we’re going to have. Surprise surprise—I’m not.”

“Damn.” Dean says plainly, still not seeing the reason behind her chagrin. Y/N rolls her eyes at him, trying to look annoyed, but the smile that she suppresses says otherwise.

A sardonic laugh escapes her. “Yeah, damn indeed.”  She rises from her seat, downing her coffee. Dean glances at his, then stretches it across to her. She finishes it in a single glug.

“So….what now?” He leans back in the chair. “You don’t know the floral arrangements? Doesn’t sound so bad.”

“I don’t know anything about this wedding, Dean. I don’t know where it’s gonna be, I don’t know who’s gonna be there, and—until I few seconds ago—I didn’t know I’m going to have to be in Boston next week. S/P/N mentioned it in the newsletter but….” Her voice drifts off and she folds her lips into a straight-line, shrugging.

“What’s in Boston?”

“The wedding, apparently. Who even gets married in Boston? Yuck.” Y/N scowls.

“Your sister, apparently.” He almost rolls his eyes. “Right, so…go to Boston. Show up for the rehearsal, see your family, have fun, and then get back here once everything’s done.”

Dean explains it like it’s so easy.  To him, it is.  Wedding prepping can’t take more than three weeks, can it….? He wouldn’t know. He’s never had the chance to even be part of a wedding, but he assumes that that’s an appropriate estimate.

But, from the way Y/N bites her lip and averts her gaze to the floor, a look teetering between guilt and embarrassment on her face, maybe he’s wrong.

“Yeaahhh….” She draws out, skeptically. “Uhm…about that. It’s not as easy as it sounds…”

“Uhm…?” He quirks an inquisitive brow.

“I…sorta…told them that I have a date to the wedding and,…” Y/N gestures in the air, but doesn’t finish her sentence.

Dean watches her with a knitted brow, waiting for an explanation that doesn’t come, until realizations strikes. His eyes widen and his mouth forms a little “o”.

“Ohhh.”

“Yeah…” Her cheeks are dusted with a feint blush and she looks away.

Dean doesn’t want to say it, but he can’t help but think how cute it is—really cute. The only thing that can compete, he thinks, is the way her eyes disappear into her cheeks when she smiles.

As embarrassing as it is, he has almost an entire list like that about Y/N; things he thinks are adorable about her, things like her laugh, to  he way she’s so awkward around big crowds,  or how she has an undeniable obsession with space. Little things. Cute things. It goes on and on, infinite and growing each day, the more and more he gets to know her…but he’ll never admit that.

Because he can’t.

Because Y/N is family, and she’s just a friend.

“Well…is it like a must to bring one along? You could always just tell your family that you guys…broke up? Maybe he cheated. Maybe the love fizzled out.” Dean offers, shrugging.

Y/N looks at him with an un-amused expression. “Great thing to mention right before a wedding.”

“God, I don’t know.” Getting up from his seat, he rolls his eyes. He shuts the book and a gust if dust billows from it, then fixes it under his arm.“You’ll figure it out. It’s you.”

“Dean…”

“Yeah?”

Y/N doesn’t meet his gaze. Instead, she looks to the floor, arms crossed over her chest.“Well,…there is something I thought about doing, but—God, I don’t know. What if, like—” She finally looks up.

Dean waits for the bombshell he knows she’s about to drop with a cautious, furrowed brow,

“—I asked Sam?”  She finishes, her expression hopeful; her eyebrows are pulled together and she’s squinting slightly. The elder Winchester feels the wind get knocked out of him at hearing this.

His eyes widen. “Sam?”

“Not to actually be my date!—just to fool my family for the two weeks. Do you think he’ll go along with it?”

“I don’t get it—why don’t you just—“

“I can’t tell them I don’t have a date, because I already told them that I do. Going back on my word now will just make me look ridiculous, Dean. Just…”Y/N sighs and shuts her eyes. Dean can read the desperation in her features. He bites his lip, contemplating Y/N’s offer.

Sam, going on a date with Y/N. The idea is so ludicrous, so unbelievable that it sounds completely silly, like imagining pigs fly or anything of the nature. He can’t bring himself to even picture the two of them together, but…

Still.

He then feels something stir in his gut at the thought, a warmth, a….jealousy? No. Hopefully not. It’s been ages since these feelings have managed to surface. Now is not the time for a return. The elder Winchester quickly suffocates the feeling and averts his attention back onto his friend.

Before him she stands, imploring y/e/c eyes, a sweet smile stretched across her face and hands clasped together. She looks like a little girl, so young, so desperate. The elder Winchester doesn’t want to say no. Even if he did—with puppy eyes like those—how can you?

“So you have to have a date to this wedding?”

“I do.”

Dean thinks for a moment, raking his eyes over Y/N’s face that speaks mountains of uncertainty.

“You think he’ll say no, huh?”

“I’ll do it.”

“What?” Confusion floods the young girls face as she unclasps her hands. They fall to her side. Dean gulps trying to level his voice to a more confident tone.

“I’ll be your date to your sister’s wedding.” He repeats, hoping he sounds more sure than he feels. His hands go cold, throat tightening.

Y/N’s face speaks volumes of surprise. “You’d…do that?”

Another nod.

“You’ll really do this?” She asks eyes wide. “A whole two weeks in Boston? With my family?”

Dean shrugs. For some wild reason, his heart is pounding in his chest and his palms are sweating, and he tries to stave off all the anxiety that begins to bubble within his gut. “Yeah. Why not?”

“Dean,” Y/N’s voice is stern all of a sudden. You can tell that she’s just as taken aback by the proposal as he is, but is trying not to show it. “If you say yes to this, I don’t want you to half-ass it? This is a real big deal for me, you know?”

“Look, do you want a date to this wedding or not?”

Y/N  then bites her lip, contemplating. The elder Winchester’s eyes never leave her as he watches, waiting for response, until she finally agrees.

“Okay.” She says. A small smile then twitches on her lips, and Dean can see she’s trying to suppress.

“ Okay. Awesome. I’m gonna call S/P/N and see if there’s anything more I need to know yeah?” She asks. He nods.

“Sure.” Dean says. “It’s fine with me.”

“Sure?”

“Mhm.” He knows he is, because the smile that breaks through Y/N’s authoritative face then is something definitely worth the decision. Her cheeks indented with dimples, she smiles, shaking her head, and then walks out to make the call. On the way out, she makes sure she butts her shoulder into his, just for fun. Dean lets out a nervous chuckle.

She’s gone. The empty library is silent, and that’s when his heart starts to thud.

Over and over, like a vicious doldrums. The silence only accentuates the sound of his rapid heartbeat, as the elder Winchester allows in a deep breath. His eyes flutter shut, and the anxiety begins to melt away gradually.

This is gonna be a hell of a wedding.

Arguing the Case For Dennis Reynolds’ Return

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is not known for being a kind show to its characters. We’re supposed to derive enjoyment, or at least a sense of schadenfreude, from seeing how miserable the Gang’s lives are and how rarely they achieve happiness. That said, making Dennis leave now, after the events of this season, seems needlessly cruel to me–and not just to the characters, but to the show’s audience, as well.

Dennis Reynolds is a rarity among television characters. To see a mentally ill character depicted so boldly, his disorder named and his characterization consistently written to match that diagnosis, is a very unusual thing to see in television. And for that diagnosis to be borderline personality disorder, instead of the more commonly-seen depression and anxiety, makes it all the more meaningful, especially to mentally ill viewers who don’t often get to see themselves depicted so honestly on television.

It’s been so wonderfully gratifying to see the arc of Dennis’ mental health throughout the show, culminating in him going on meds this season and making real progress in dealing with his emotions. It sends a message of hope and recovery to other people suffering from mental illness and disorders. After all, if a person as “irredeemable” as Dennis Reynolds can seek medication and therapy to improve his mental health, surely the rest of us can as well.

On a narrative level, it seems a shame to ditch Dennis permanently now that he does have this more profound level of emotional depth. His outburst about his “big feelings” in The Gang Tends Bar was an incredibly touching thing, and very faithful to the experiences of real people who have BPD. With so much more depth and room for Dennis to grow now that he’s able to admit and talk about his feelings, sending him away the way he left tonight feels like a cheap ending to one of the most satisfying character arcs I’ve ever seen on television.

This isn’t the only reason I ask the writers to consider bringing Dennis back, however. There is another reason having him leave now is unnecessarily cruel to the audience, especially the (surprisingly large!) LGBTQ following that Sunny has attracted.

As early as season 3, subtext has been laid that, not only is Mac gay, but that he’s in love with Dennis. What started as a simple, joking “I love you” in The Gang Gets Held Hostage has become so much more.

We all thought it was doomed to staying in the realm of subtext forever, though; one of the main conceits of Sunny is that the characters will never develop and improve. Thus, it would be impossible for Mac to ever truly accept himself and come out of the closet as the series wore on, made evident by his false coming out in the season 11 finale.

But then, something incredible happened. We complained about how cruel it was to out a character and then force him back into the closet when that’s a narrative that’s all too common in real life. Sunny is cruel, but it shouldn’t be needlessly so, and in a year that went on to bring so much worry and strife into the lives of LGBTQ people, putting Mac back in the closet felt like salt in the wound.

The incredible part about our complaining is that the writers listened. Charlie Day recently said in an interview that bringing Mac back out of the closet in season 12–permanently, this time–was the right thing to do, considering the social climate we’re living in right now. Furthermore, he said that they did it partially because of the feedback they received after the season 11 finale. They defied the show’s main conceit to do right by the LGBTQ community.

As momentous as Mac’s staying out is on its own, it brought with it an exciting new possibility: the possibility to confront his feelings for Dennis head-on. His closeted status was the only thing ever really stopping the writers from really delving into it before. And, as we’ve seen from the second half of season 12, they’re not at all afraid to explore the topic in a more indepth way, as Mac’s PTSDee dream sequence and his heartfelt gift to Dennis in The Gang Tends Bar showed. More interesting than even that, though, was the possibility that Dennis might return those feelings.

More than once, we’ve seen that Dennis does care about Mac much more than he usually lets on. And we know that Dennis is probably bisexual, both from statements made by the showrunners at ComicCon and from Dennis’ behavior within the show itself. Since Mac came out in Hero or Hate Crime?, the possibility of Mac and Dennis’ relationship existing in a more romantic context has been explored, culminating in the two of them actually pretending to be together in tonight’s season finale, and all-but open confirmation that Mac is in love with Dennis.

This is why, I believe, it’s so needlessly cruel to permanently remove Dennis from the equation now. I do not mean to imply that I want to see Mac and Dennis in a happy, committed relationship–that’s never been the Sunny way. But it seems unfair to me that Dee and Charlie got their moment of romance in The Gang Misses the Boat, when Mac and Dennis have it torn away from them just as it becomes possible for them to have it in the first place. At the risk of sounding like an impassioned young gay man, it hurts to see a romantic relationship between two men dangled in front of me and then torn away like this. More than painful, it’s practically queerbaiting, an incredibly harmful practice that’s sadly all too common in today’s television landscape.

On the off chance that anyone involved with the writing of Always Sunny reads this: firstly, thank you for getting this far. Secondly, I urge you to consider, again, the social implications of making Dennis leave forever just as he makes a huge breakthrough in his mental health and just as it becomes possible for his relationship with Mac to be explored in a more romantic context. Dangling Mac and Dennis in a relationship (literally) before viewers, only to yank that away, is incredibly painful to watch, especially for us young LGBTQ viewers who often struggle enough with staying positive just living our daily lives. And I personally know a great many people with BPD who have found themselves in Dennis– which isn’t something they can say about many other TV show characters.

I know that, as young LGBTQ people and as young mentally ill people (and oftentimes, both), we are not the core demographic for Sunny, and I know that we never will be. However, I also know that the showrunners do want to do right by us, and that they do have our best interests at heart as allies. It is with this knowledge that I ask, if any of you are reading this, to consider bringing Dennis back in season 13, whenever that may be.

I know that Sunny will not have a happy ending; it completely goes against the show’s thesis. But Mac coming out for good in season 12 has proven that the show’s thesis can be defied in special circumstances, especially when it’s for the greater societal good. I am not asking for Mac and Dennis to get married, but I am asking you to consider the cruelty of resolving more than a decade of Mac’s romantic feelings for Dennis in this way, just as it became possible for them to become something more. And more than that, I am asking you to consider the impact Dennis Reynolds has had on the lives of so many mentally ill people, who almost never get to see themselves represented on television as accurately as they have with Dennis.

I trust all of you as artists and writers, and as well-meaning and thoughtful people in general, to consider my words as you move forward with planning for season 13. Again, if you made it this far, thank you for listening, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds, whatever that may be.

daliaaaaa could you tell me your fave sterek fics please?? :)

How could you ask me this? Do you have any idea how many sterek fics I’ve read over the years? How many I’ve loved?

This is a short list of the very few I could think of off the top of my head. I think I’ll probably make a recs page, because I’ve been meaning to for a long time. I have a recs tag, but that includes different pairings as well.

“I called you a slave-driver!” Stiles cried hysterically. “I called you an ogre! I stole all the blue paperclips!”
Derek raised an eyebrow at him.
“That’s company property!” he shouted, waving his arms madly in distress.
Derek ran a hand over his face. “It’s not theft if the vice president of the company gives you permission.”

The Prince

Stiles must surrender the most important thing in his life to protect the town… and no one can figure out what it was.

The first time Derek catches sight of the new yoga instructor, Stiles is in the middle of showing a class how to do downward-facing dog. Derek walks into a wall.

Things don’t exactly improve from there.

Derek can’t stop staring at Stiles, the bendy new yoga instructor at his family’s gym. Stiles thinks Derek’s a repressed homophobe who hates Stiles for making him want the D. They fall in love.

This is not what you imagined months ago while daydreaming of what you would be doing today. Sitting in class all day or leaning against the counter at work, visualizing hundreds of scenarios where you and your knight in shining armor are having the time of your life on the one day in the whole year set aside just for love. He would be wearing a black suit and tie, his hair brushed and looking at you as if you fished out all the stars in the universe and put them in your eyes. And you would be wearing a dress made of silk that took weeks of extra shifts but it would be all worth it when he’d see you, hair made up and a lovesick smile on your lips.

February 14th is supposed to be a night you’d never forget in your entire life, a night you’d look back on while holding your children and looking at your husband, saying wow, where did the time go? It’s not supposed to end up with you looking at racks and racks of cards for every possible occasion at nine in the evening with a frown as deep. You’re probably the only person in the small 24 hour store beside the clerk himself, who frankly looks like he doesn’t want to be here more than you.

12x10 - “Pterodactyl Screeching into the void” - Part 1

My title is borrowed from @postmodernmulticoloredcloak comment on my crazy blogging after first watching this episode earlier. I feel like it is a fitting title for how this episode made me feel. To clarify, these are very very happy pterodactyls.

Steve Yokey wrote this episode and he appears to have well and truly taken up the gap left when Robbie Thompson sadly left the show. In fact this episode to me channels the ghost of Robbie in many different ways. From the fanfiction-esque moments of poor suffering third wheel Sam, to the meta nod to Charlie Bradbury, there is much of Robbie to be found here. Basically, it was bloody perfect.

I feel like there is so much to talk about in this episode that fandom will be chewing on it for months if not years to come. Yokey has picked up the characterisations brilliantly, and seems to have an understanding of what the fandom desperately craves in terms of Castiel, his character, his personality and his development. I adored his sass in this episode. Some other writers *cough*bucklemming*cough* struggle to really capture Castiel’s sass and humour. Showing their lack of understanding of Castiel’s persona and his intelligence and instead writing him in a way that is jarring and sometimes basically stupid. Castiel is far from stupid. In this episode he was written perfectly, in a way I haven’t seen since Edlund’s time. Is that a sweeping statement? Maybe. But I’m still riding my high so let me have it this time.

This episode gave us three of my favourite things. Badass and Sassy Castiel, Overprotective grumpy husband Dean, and poor long suffering brother Sam. (baring in mind this is how they are usually written in fanfiction nowadays this is exactly my jam and I am so so happy to see it play out on screen. Seriously who sold their soul to Crowley for this episode?)

This review will also be in two parts. Because I have so freaking much to say about it.

The first part will focus on destiel, the second on everything else including Castiel’s emotional arc (as separate from destiel), his relationships with angels, angels and gender and Lily Sunder’s character.

PART 1 - ALL THE DESTIEL

John’s dick is Chekov’s gun

It only came to our attention recently that Chekov’s gun as a symbol was being used in Sherlock series 4, however, it’s actually been the main motivator behind Sherlock for the last seven years. “Chekov’s gun” is a writing technique, that says don’t put unnecessary details into your stories.

So when we saw John’s gun at the beginning of A Study in Pink:

We knew that by the end of A Study in Pink, he was going to fire it:

However, there’s more to John’s gun in A Study in Pink than most people might realize.

We hear Moriarty introduce himself in The Great Game by asking, “Is that a British Army Browning L9A1 in you pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?”

Sherlock replies, “Both”.

Here is explicit proof that guns in this show are meant to be seen as penises. Sherlock just compared an erection to that gun. It happens later in The Abominable Bride, as well, if you think I’m just making this all up.

“It’s dangerous to finger a loaded firearm in the pocket of one’s dressing gown, or are you just pleased to see me?”

Considering this is all in Sherlock’s head and Sherlock is horribly repressed, Moriarty mentioning that gun/dick again only slides home this symbol.

And if you needed any more proof, here’s a picture of Sherlock thinking about Moriarty maintaining eye contact while getting on his knees and putting a gun on his tongue:

Is it even subtext anymore when they’ve openly admitted guns are penises?

This all brings me back to Chekov’s gun and A Study in Pink.

Being Jimmy’s oldest daughter wasn’t easy. I had to accept at a young age that I would never see my father again, but in his place was this… Being. Castiel. At first he scared me, and I refused to be around him. “You’re not my dad…” I remember telling him the first time I met him. But as I continued to get older, I started to value him more, and I consider him to be my father now.

Today, I’m in college, still living with Jody. Even though Alex and Claire might not appreciate her, I do. After my little sister and I were left with no one, she was nice enough to let the two of us stay with her. Even now, when she’s technically not responsible for me anymore since I’m almost twenty-two, she lets me stay here instead of forcing me to live in a dorm. I will be eternally grateful, and Claire’s actions just pissed me off sometimes.

“Y/N, dinner time! And while you’re up there, tell Claire to get out of her room and join us!” Jody yelled from the kitchen downstairs. I picked my head up from my lore book, marking my place and setting it down gently on my bed. The one, and probably only, thing that my sister and I did have in common was our eagerness to hunt. Even then, that’s a long shot. She’s irresponsible, and half the time she’s wrong. I’m surprised she’s not in jail yet, even with Jody being the sheriff.

I close my door on my way out of my room, and pop my head into Claire’s room.

“Time to eat.” I tell her, watching her writing in a notebook.

“I’m busy.”

“And I don’t care. Come downstairs.” I roll my eyes. She huffs and rolls her eyes, but ultimately gets up and following me to the kitchen. God, her food smells so good.

“Where’s Alex?” I ask.

“Out with friends, I guess. She was vague on details.” Jodi tells me, setting my plate on lasagna on the table.

“She’s probably out having sex with that new boyfriend of hers.” Claire snickered.

“Her boyfriend’s an asshole, I don’t know why she’s with him.” I respond.

“Oh, you’re one to talk. You’re the one who screws-“ She started, but cut herself off when she realized she was going too far. A look of panic crosses my face, and Jody looks at me quizzically. Thankfully, she doesn’t push it any further.

“Hey, Y/N, I was going to tell you earlier but I forgot. Dean called me earlier, said they need extra help on a hunting trip.  Asked if you wanted to go along.”

“What? Of course I want to!” I practically yelled.

“I figured. They’ll be here tomorrow morning. After dinner, go pack.”

“That’s so not fair!” Claire whined. “They never invite me to go hunting with them.”

“I’m older than you, and quite frankly, a better hunter. So, quit.” I say, trying to stop the conversation before it happened. She has no filter.

I finish my dinner quickly, and excuse myself to my room to pack, only thinking about Dean. There had always been chemistry between the two of us, but he didn’t ever act on it until about a year ago. There was a case in the next town over, so Sam and Dean stayed at our house. One night, we were drinking a little, one thing led to another and we slept together.

We both felt extremely guilty about it. Not only was I only 20 years old, meaning he’s almost double my age, but because I’m his best friend’s daughter. Castiel cared about me and treated me like a daughter to the best of his ability, and if he found out that Dean had just screwed his daughter silly… I didn’t even want to think about it.

For a while, we avoided each other. When we did see each other after that, we never talked about that night. It was strictly business, or him asking how I have been. But I could see the way he looked at me. I could feel his staring at me when he doesn’t think I notice. I see the way he always seems to want to tell me something, but never does.

Claire noticed, too. “What’s going on between you and Dean? He’s looks at you like a man looks at his fiancé on their wedding day.” She finally asked one day, as we were sitting in her room together watching TV.

I made the mistake of hesitating to answer. She threatened to tell Jody, or worse, Castiel, if I didn’t tell her what happened. She promised not to tell anybody, but oh man, did she hold that over my head anytime she wanted something.

The second time we did it, it was in his impala. Castiel had called me, asking if I could accompany him in a hunt. I obliged, thinking it would only be us two. I showed up and got the surprise of my life when I saw the boys there, too. I don’t remember exactly how we ended up together in the car, but there had been so much sexual tension between us, going unspoken. We just started ripping each other’s clothes off, and had some really great sex in the backseat.

Ever since then, Dean and I had been finding every excuse to be together. The hard part was keeping it a secret and making sure no one was suspicious.

I finish packing, excited to see him tomorrow. I shouldn’t be this excited. He doesn’t want a relationship, I know that. I know it’s strictly sex. But a part of me wants more. I want to be able to call Dean my boyfriend, to able to not sneak around with him. I want to be able to tell him how much I love him, to feel happy with him. To have that “apple pie life.” But I know he couldn’t give me that even if he wanted to. His life was too fucked up for that. He was too fucked up for that.

I sigh, climbing into bed, and try to shut out my feelings.

-

“Rise and shine, Y/N.” I hear a man’s voicing saying from the doorway, a voice I immediately recognize. I groan, pulling the covers over my face.

“God, Dean, what time is it?” I croak out.

“Early. We gotta get out of here now if we want to be there by tonight.” He says, pulling the covers off my bed. I glare at him, looking at the clock on my nightstand.

“It’s four a.m. I want sleep.”

“Sleep in the car. You already know its comfortable back there.” He smirks, making me throw a pillow at him.

“I’ll be there in five minutes.”

I hurriedly get myself somewhat presentable, brushing my hair and teeth, and changing into regular clothes before grabbing my backpack and walking out the door. I walk past Claire’s room on the way, stopping and hugging her before I leave. I do this every time I leave for a hunt. I never know what could happen, and regardless of how annoyed she gets me, I love her.

I get to the impala, and notice that Sam isn’t there. I look at Dean, confused, but get into the passenger side of the car.

“Where’s Sam?”

“He’s meeting us there.” Dean replies, pulling out of the driveway and taking off. I felt my phone buzz, and see a text from Claire.

‘Should I start sucking Sam’s dick so I can get invited on hunts, too?’

I ignore the text, shutting it off and putting it in my bag. I don’t get to see Dean often- I’m not letting her ruin it.

The road trip was quiet and uneventful. I slept almost the entire time, and when I wasn’t sleeping, I was reading, which made Dean laugh.

“Maybe you should be with Sammy instead, you nerd.” He would joke. Every few minutes, he would look over at me and smile, not thinking that I could see him.

Before I knew it, it was already almost ten at night and we still had another three hours left of driving. I thought that Dean would just keep driving it, seeing that it was only three hours and he did this for a living, but after a few minutes he pulls into some sketchy looking motel.

“Motel, huh?” I tease.

“Shut up,” He laughs. He goes inside to get a room key while I start getting stuff out of the impala. I giggle slightly when I see that he still has my socks sitting in the floor board of his car. When we had sex in his car that one time, I accidentally left my socks after I left. He tried to return them to me, but I told him to keep them as a good luck charm, completely joking. But he never got rid of them.

It’s something stupid to be all giggly about.

“Room six.” Dean comes up to me, helping grab stuff. I lay down on the bed, enjoying the feeling of comfort after a long day of being cooped up in a car.

“You comfortable?” He looks at me, smiling.

“I am, but I need a shower. I’m just trying to gather the energy to get up and walk there.” I groan, not wanting to have to get up. Dean chuckled, and walked over to the bed, picking me up like I was a feather.

“You’re light.” He comments.

“You’re just strong.” I tell him, and he sets me down in front of the bathroom. “You know, I might need help taking my clothes off, too.”

“I’m happy to help.” His eyes sparkle, his face filling with lust. He leans in, slowly kissing me at first. I pick up the pace, opening the door to the bathroom and taking us both in there. Dean slams the door shut, and hurriedly takes my shirt off, not breaking the kiss. His hands roam all over my back, until finally unhooking my bra and taking my breasts into his mouth. I moan at the sensation, leaning against the wall in delight. He stops to take off his clothes, and I begin taking off my jeans and thong.

“Y/N, you’re beautiful. I don’t know how I got you.” Dean says, turning on the shower.

“I could say the same to you, daddy.”

His eyes got darker. He pulls me hungrily into him, kissing me hard and pumping two fingers in and out of my clit, making me moan. We step into the shower, both of us almost gasping at how good the warm water felt.

“What do you want, babygirl?”

“I want you to fuck me, daddy. Fuck me hard.” I beg. He enters me slowly from behind before going at it hard and fast.

“Fuck, Y/N” Dean hisses, hearing me moan like that was driving him over the edge. I knew he had a slight daddy kink, but not like this.

“Oh, yes, daddy, I’m close.” I barely get out, panting. He speeds up, his breath ragged at well.

“Y/N?” I hear a voice outside of shower. I jumped away from Dean.

“Hello?” The same voice says again.

Oh. My. God.

My face drops as I recognize the voice. I poke my head out of the shower just to make sure.

“Uh, hi, Castiel.” I say guilty, hiding my body behind the curtain. Dean stays silent.

“I heard you calling out for your dad. Are you ok?”

“I’m, uh, I’m fine. Sorry. You can leave now.” I choke out. I don’t think he knows Dean is in here.

“Are you sure? I can stay-“

“Castiel, I am in the shower. Please leave.” I rush him. He looks at me oddly, but eventually poofs out of the room.

“Shit, that was close.” I let out a breath.

“I can’t believe he actually did that, oh my GOD. That’s hilarious.” Dean is cracking up.

“You wouldn’t be laughing so hard if he had actually caught us.” I shot at him.

“Yeah, yeah, you’re right. But he didn’t, that’s all that matters.” He pulls me towards him, kissing me.

“So, should we continue? This is our only night alone together, you know.” Dean makes a good point.

“Definitely.”

“You’re a terrible father” - Tony Stark x Daughter!reader

Love the idea. And really, I kinda take any requests :D. Thank you for this one, it’s right here, hope you like it :

_____________________________________________________________________

It was the twentieth fucking time you tried to call your father, Anthony Stark, and you fell, once again, on his stupid voice saying that he was “too busy to answer” and that he’d “call back” but “probably not”. Damn that man.

In your entire life on this Earth, you were pretty sure he never picked you up on time somewhere. Never, ever. He was just always late, so much that you came up with a trick of actually telling the wrong times for him to be on time. If something was at 6pm, you’d tell him it was at 4. But even with that trick, he still often managed to be fucking late. Which is why most of the time, your stepmother came to get you. But Pepper, wasn’t available today.

You smiled, thinking about your “stepmother”. You were so glad she was in your life, being pretty sure that if your dad never had the help, he probably would have lost custody of you before you reach the age of 1…You considered Pepper your real mother. You never met your biological mom as she just dumped you in front of your dad’s house, with a note. One paternity test later, and it was confirmed you were his…You were the first step to his transformation, the first to help him become the man he was today. Better.

So you grew up with Pepper around. She filled in brilliantly the mother role, even before she actually started dating your father (you remember the day you finally convinced him to just tell her his feelings, and smiled).

You were just so glad she was there. Being Tony Stark’s daughter wasn’t the easiest thing ever. He was quite…peculiar. He always took good care of you, even when he was still in his “I’m a drunk, but I’m a genius so it’s ok” days. He was always there for you (even if late to the party), but the pressure of being the daughter of someone that famous was always difficult for you, especially since your biological mother was MIA…Everyone always expected so much of you, to be a genius like him, to change the World like him, and they always asked the same fucking questions about your mother and blahblahblah…While you just wanted to be normal. Which is why you hid the fact that you were a genius too, and helped him a lot on the design and montage of his latest suits.

Being Tony Stark’s daughter wasn’t easy, and Pepper Potts always got your back. Helping you avoid paparazzis, talking to you about things you just couldn’t ask your father, telling you everything was going to be OK when you were wondering why your dad fell asleep in his own vomit, dead drunk etc etc…She was just always there for you when your dad wasn’t.

Fortunately, since those times where you were afraid you’d lost your dad to alcohol, he greatly improved. Since he got involved with the Avengers in fact. People like Captain America helped in the transformation that begin the day he discovered he was a father. It made him want to be better, to not make and sell weapon anymore, but to create things that would help the World and its inhabitants. To stop drinking and wasting his precious health. To become a role model for people, and not just because he was that cool rich dude, but because his action inspired people to do better too.

But one thing he never fucking improved, was his damn habit of being late all the time. After calling him one more time and him not answering, you were about to just hitchhike back home when your phone rung. It was him. At the sound of his voice when you picked up, you knew he knew he screwed up. It was easy to know though, he often screwed up. He was (became) a good dad, but damn he made so many mistakes. You didn’t mind much. Except when he was late, you hated waiting. He shyly said :

-Hello baby girl…Something you needed ?

-Oh yeah. I just have one question for you.

He could hear in your voice that you were…sour, and carefully asked :

-Yes ?

-Did you like…forgot about me ? I’ve been waiting for you to pick me up from college for almost two hours. It’s 8 dad. You’re a terrible father…

You made sure to make your last sentence sound like it was a joke, not wanting your dad to feel too bad, just a little bit. You knew he was self-conscious about the education he gave you, afraid he didn’t do enough…When really, he did. It wasn’t always the best, but it was his best.

Silence on the line. You heard him put the phone away from his mouth, swear a little bit, and take it back to his face.

-I’m so sorry honey, I was so caught up in…

-Working on a new suit, I know. Can you just come pick me up please ? Or maybe I should just call Steve ?

-I’m on my way.

You smiled as you hung up the phone. Your father didn’t really approve of your new relationship with one of his superhero colleague, Steve Rogers. You met him at the Avengers’ tower one day, and you guys just got really well along. He was a bit older, just a few years (well, technically, decades older…), and Hawkeye and Black Widow convinced him to ask you out, hoping it’d piss your father. They were right. But here’s the thing, you were a Stark, stubbornness was written in your DNA, so you just didn’t care at all and went on a date with Cap’ anyway. It went wonderfully. Six months later, you were officially together. And there’s nothing your dad could do about it (except clumsily trying to make you two break up, and not succeeding at all).

If you wanted to annoy your dad, you just had to pronounce Steve’s name lovingly, and he was gone for hours of rant about how, out of respect, someone should never date  a friend’s daughter…But deep down, he was happy it was a gentleman such as Captain America that caught your heart, at least, he knew he was a good guy. Not like him at all, which was good.

After a few more minute, you heard the sound of your father’s car, and you stood up from the wall you were sitting on.

He parked on the side of the road and rolled down his window to show you two nice warm cup of coffee.

-I got coffee…As an offering of peace ?

You rolled your eyes and got into the car, snatching both cups from his hands. You fucking loved coffee. He gave you a look meaning : “really ? Watch your caffeine intake girl”, and you gave him a look meaning : “F’ you, you’re late, I love coffee, everything is for me”…You guys communicated a lot with just your eyes. People always were kinda freaked out that you could hold entire conversation by just moving your eyes and eye brows.

Your dad stayed silent for a minute, thinking about what he could say without pissing you off too much. He knew you really didn’t like small talk.

-So…how was school ? I still don’t understand why you’re doing an English major, by the way…

-School’s going great. Had lunch with Steve, he wasn’t late. And I chose English by pure contradiction spirit. People expected me to get into engineering and shit, I definitely wanted to disappoint them. And besides, I don’t need to learn thing I already know, do I ? So…English and language in general.

-…I guess it makes sense. You had lunch with Cap ? I thought he went back to New York.

-He’s going back tomorrow, for a few days. And yeah, he made me great sandwiches.

-Sandwiches…Lame. I’d have make you…Osso Bucco or something.

-Osso Bucco ? Really ?

-Yes. Or something else. Come on anything is better than just sandwiches.

-Yeah, maybe, but he was on time.

-Ok I get it. Sorry once more. Won’t happen…

-Don’t you dare say it won’t happen again, because it always happen, no matter. I told you I was getting out at 3, even though my last classes ended at 6…and you still managed to be late. 5 hours late. Most impressive.

-I’m sorry.

-Yeah you already said that.

-I mean it.

-I know dad, I know…

Silence. You two were so alike, and yet so different. Physically, in one glance it was easy to see you were related. You basically were a female version of him. Mentally, you thought a lot the same way, but you were…Nicer. Less pretentious. He’d say you were too nice, and not confident enough.

-You know, I’m really trying.

-Yes dad. I know. Don’t worry, it’s ok. Those two hours waiting outside actually gave me enough quiet time to work on…a little project.

-Yeah ?

-Yeah.

You took out of your bag blueprints you made for an idea you suddenly had for a new suit…And he smiled.

-Brilliant.

-I know.

He smiled. You were a lot like each other, and yet different. He’d say you took all of his good sides, none of his bad.

You quickly forgave him for his tardiness as you both got completely focus on your new project, and also because…Well, he was your dad. No matter what he did, you’d always forgive him. Besides, contrary to some people’s belief, he was mostly a good dad. Sometimes a prick, like a lot of father, but always there. Late, but there. You didn’t had a flawless education, but hey, it was still pretty great…

It wasn’t easy being Tony Stark’s daughter, but you wouldn’t have it any other way.

You watched your boyfriend, who sat cross-legged on the floor, folding clothes to put into his suitcase with great care. Sparkles twizzled across your eyes as you observed him with a thudding heart. His back was facing you and as he moved, his muscles flexed gently beneath his grey sweater. Unable to resist the temptation of his touch- you climbed off of his bed to crouch behind him. Your hands rubbed over his shoulder blades tenderly.

“Hey, baby.” He says and laughs. That enchanting laugh that is so soft it comes out as a throaty chuckle.

“Hey, baby.” You say back and sit down so that your knees are on either side of him. You nuzzle your nose into his soft shirt, inhaling his clean and musky scent. You wrap your arms around him- letting your hands fold over his abs, which he soon covers with his own. He leans his head backwards and the smell of his shampooed orange hair tickles at your nose.

(If you have the time) you should do a book rec list!!

$Definitely!! I’m just going to include the ones that I’ve read that have resonated with me personally, so please feel free to message me for specific recs (Scifi, romance, wlw, etc) and i’ll look into making a more refined list for you.  Reading is truly such a positive outlet, regardless of age, and I really hope there is something on here for everyone to love as much as I did.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz.  Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

This book is so important.  It follows two Mexican-America boys, through the 80s in Texas, and at the very heart of all of it, is a love so pure and intense, it made me genuinely choke up with how intimate it was. (Try not to fall in love with Dante, I dare you, you will fail, just as hard as Ari)

Girl Mans Up  by M-E Gerard. All Pen wants is to be the kind of girl she’s always been. So why does everyone have a problem with it? They think the way she looks and acts means she’s trying to be a boy—that she should quit trying to be something she’s not. If she dresses like a girl, and does what her folks want, it will show respect. If she takes orders and does what her friend Colby wants, it will show her loyalty. But respect and loyalty, Pen discovers, are empty words. Old-world parents, disintegrating friendships, and strong feelings for other girls drive Pen to see the truth—that in order to be who she truly wants to be, she’ll have to man up.

Girl Mans Up is such a great book about gender identity for queer girls.  Pen is amazing narrator, and having it in the first person perspective is perfect for seeing just how frustrating it is to be a girl that doesn’t fit the gender role she’s expected to. (She also has a girlfriend who she stays with in the entire book and they have a wonderful relationship, no one dies 10/10)

Whatever: or how junior year became totally f$@ked by S.J. Goslee @pantstomatchJunior year is about to start. Here’s what Mike Tate knows:His friends are awesome and their crappy garage band is a great excuse to drink cheap beer. Rook Wallace is the devil. The Lemonheads rock. And his girlfriend Lisa is the coolest. Then Lisa breaks up with him, which makes Mike only a little sad, because they’ll stay friends and he never knew what to do with her boobs anyway. But when Mike finds out why Lisa dumped him, it blows his mind. And worse―he gets elected to homecoming court. With a standout voice, a hilariously honest view on sex and sexuality, and enough f-bombs to make your mom blush, S.J. Goslee’s debut YA novel Whatever. is a fresh, modern take on the coming-out story.

I’m honestly 100% certain there isn’t a summary that could do Whatever justice. I read this book because another librarian I work with suggested it to me, and I haven’t laughed out loud so much at a book since the Georgia Nicholson Diaries.  Mike is a bisexual teen who frequently doesn’t shower and hangs out with the most endearing group of straight boys you could possibly conjure up.  This book also has incredibly refreshing male/female friendships and the sweetest sibling relationship between Mike and his eccentric little sister, Rosie.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who’s ever been chosen. That’s what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right.Half the time, Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon’s face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here–it’s their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.

It’s Harry Potter but funnier and Harry and Draco end up together!! Actually, it’s Simon and Baz, but honestly it’s what all of our thirteen year old selves were starved for, like junkies of fanfiction.net, just looking for a fix.  I’m always a little hesitant of YA romance novels with vampires (For good reason, I think we’re all a little jaded still), but Baz is my Favorite Vampire™.  He’s funny and sarcastic and moody and just a little bit lonely, the poor thing.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater @maggie-stiefvaterEvery year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue never sees them–until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks to her.His name is Gansey, a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble. But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul whose emotions range from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher who notices many things but says very little. For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She doesn’t believe in true love, and never thought this would be a problem. But as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore

This sort of sounds like a lovey dovey romance novel right? It’s not. There’s magic, and psychics, and dead Welsh Kings (this medieval lit major was shook), and the most fleshed out characters I’ve read in a series in about 8,000 years. I didn’t think I could fall in love with a group of spoiled prep school boys, and neither does the main character Blue, but here she is with her four husbands.

Timekeeper by Tara Sim. In an alternate Victorian world controlled by clock towers, a damaged clock can fracture time–and a destroyed one can stop it completely. It’s a truth that seventeen-year-old clock mechanic Danny Hart knows all too well; his father has been trapped in a Stopped town east of London for three years. Though Danny is a prodigy who can repair not only clockwork, but the very fabric of time, his fixation with staging a rescue is quickly becoming a concern to his superiors. And so they assign him to Enfield, a town where the tower seems to be forever plagued with problems. Danny’s new apprentice both annoys and intrigues him, and though the boy is eager to work, he maintains a secretive distance. Danny soon discovers why: he is the tower’s clock spirit, a mythical being that oversees Enfield’s time. Though the boys are drawn together by their loneliness, Danny knows falling in love with a clock spirit is forbidden, and means risking everything he’s fought to achieve.
But when a series of bombings at nearby towers threaten to Stop more cities, Danny must race to prevent Enfield from becoming the next target or he’ll not only lose his father, but the boy he loves, forever.

I didn’t think steampunk was my thing, but I see maybe I was wrong.  Or maybe I just really love this one particular steampunk book.  Danny is so full of moxie and sarcasm and nervous sweating and tea it’s easy to see why Colton falls for him.  This book also tends to tackle really heavy subjects without you realizing its done just that.
