Egyptians don't use Hieroglyphs anymore so how is it orientalist? Shouldn't the gods also be insensitive by that standard?
it’s complicated and i had written a longer answer saying why i have mixed feelings about the gods of theros since that’s a similar situation but i accidentally refreshed so the short version is, there’s a fine line between a direct translation of something real, and something inspired by something real. ie. some of the gods of theros remind me too much of actual olympians, whereas some of the others don’t, which is one reason why i think that theros was both successful and un-successful. too early to tell with amonkhet of course but what it really comes down to is: is this going to be magical egypt, or is it going to be a new fantasy world inspired by ancient egypt.
i never said they were super racist and problematic for it. i mean i have been asking for an egypt plane since, forever, and i don’t know how best to convey to you guys that you don’t really need to feel ATTACKED by someone saying that they think fake hieroglyphics are kind of cheesy and lame. maybe if it was like, more of a unique looking fake language that would be cool but i think we’re supposed to just read this as literally egyptian writing. again, it comes down to whether or not it’s a new fantasy world or just ancient egypt with magic.
i know that some people will see words like “orientalist” your snap reaction is to be like YOU’RE READING WAY TOO FAR INTO THIS but that’s literally just a thing that gets talked about, both in fandom and academia, pretty much all fantasy has an aspect of orientalism and it doesn’t have to be a bad thing, it can be cool if done tastefully (ie: kaladesh had a really cool aesthetic), it can be problematic (ie: god so many things. so many), or, imo, it can just be kind of cheesy, such as in this case.
also, i’m sure you already know this but saying that something isn’t done “anymore” doesn’t really make it not orientalist because orientalism goes hand in hand with romantic nostalgia. that is definitely a thing.
it’s too early to judge the entire plane of amonkhet, which, so far, i REALLY LIKE, so i was only talking about the titles on the invocation cards, and i think that might have been unclear.
