where people on other planets have totally different ways of doing things we would never even think of

Character Update: Yellow Diamond

Quite a while back, I wrote about Yellow Diamond, and my intent was to present the character I saw in totality. Even now, when I talk about the Diamonds and how they read strongly as characters with motives and feelings beyond just hurting others because they can, I feel like for the most part, I’m addressing questions about Yellow Diamond in particular.

Yellow Diamond is a character easy to picture as an irredeemable antagonist. Like Jasper and Aquamarine, she walks with an air of authority and certainty about her. A lot of people take her character as one who hasn’t shown any explicit self-doubt or weakness. It wasn’t long ago that The Answer aired and there was a lot of positive feedback because we got to see a “vulnerable” Garnet.

When I hear this sort of characterisation, I think back to these characters. While it is a very humanising experience to see a character previously presented as a bastion of unshakable strength question themselves and show a “fatal flaw” or weakness, it’s not the only way to present a relatable, dynamic character. To situate this in our world, it’s very rare that people choose to show their inadequacies in the first place. In fact, it is far more common for people to do everything in their power not to reveal vulnerability.

Yellow Diamond is a very complex character precisely because she shows indication of presenting herself as much more put together than she lets on. And, as usually happens in real-life as well, it’s not only for others’ sake but also for her own. In her, we see a character brutally honest, suffering neither formality nor trivialities for the sake of it. To view her consistently would be taking her actions into that context, and using that to understand where she stands on PD’s shattering. That’s something I want to talk about in this post.

So let’s get started.

1. Yellow’s relationship with feelings is complicated

I’d like to begin by talking about YD as a chest gem. Like Blue Diamond and other chest gems, she tends to interact with the world in terms of feelings. Remarkable moments in her life are likely best remembered by what she was feeling at the time they happened, and her first impressions are probably marked by how she felt about certain individuals, places, or things.

I think this is most evident in how she feels about Earth. In the past I’d talked about how Peridot was presenting a solution to Homeworld’s resource shortage in Message Received. What we’d learned at that point was that Homeworld was running out of resources, so much so that Gems couldn’t be made as physically strong or with the same abilities as they were supposed to be.

Upon closer inspection, it’s because the very means Homeworld uses in order to advance its species is inherently parasitic. They drain planets and have no means to replenish these resources. What Peridot claimed to find, after † a deeper appreciation for organic life, was a way to make use of Earth without damaging said life. And that’s a game-changing discovery, because the only way for that to happen would be a renewable or sustainable means of using a planet.

Peridot had expected Yellow Diamond to see the reason and logic of her plan, to be just as excited about saving Earth as she was because it meant helping all Gems. That was YD’s reputation. Recall that at this point, it was not that Peridot turned her back on Homeworld because she realised Earth was a better place to live. She realised that Earth was worth protecting, but she thought the Crystal Gems were unable to meet their own goals. That’s why she reached out to the most powerful, rational, objective being she could think of, Yellow Diamond, to help her reach that goal.

Peridot was sorely disappointed by that encounter. She realised her hero wasn’t perfect, but I wouldn’t say she wished for the destruction of Homeworld. I doubt that her take-away from that was that all Homeworld gems were evil. There was a time she’d worked with them, lived with them, learned from them. On her way to destroy the Cluster, the weapon of mass destruction about to shatter the planet she was currently living on, put there by Homeworld, she said it was difficult not to have feelings about Homeworld.

And I think that’s something to understand about the Homeworld defectors we’ve seen so far. Earth was a better option for them, but Homeworld would always be home. For the most part, those who chose to leave still imagine a better life for their fellow-Gems back home, but found no way to give them that life without leaving Homeworld altogether.

What this leads up to is the idea that all these Gems have strong feelings associated with Homeworld, and now Earth. But on different occasions, they put aside these feelings because they felt something better could be realised. Rose put aside her sentimental feelings of never being able to go “home” because she wanted to give the Crystal Gems the freedom they currently experience on Earth, and she wanted to protect the life that was already thriving there. Steven, more than once, has sacrificed the fear he felt and let himself be placed in dangerous situations for the sake of protecting others.

The other thing that I want to point out here is how we were led to believe Peridot was going to sell out Earth to Homeworld. We don’t get a lengthy monologue about how she feels or her plan. She just goes through with it and we feel a sense of betrayal, like the gems did. That she was thinking up a solution and pitched it to her Diamond shows that she didn’t just realise Earth’s life had value halfway through the conversation. It was her objective assessment from earlier on. Unlike most short-format shows though, these changes in characters aren’t exaggerated, and more closely reflect the interiority we experience in life.

On the one hand, we have someone like Blue Diamond, who has let the feelings of both sadness and regret take over her ability to act. BD is angry and upset with Earth. She cannot fathom how such a weak and fragile planet was able to shatter a Diamond. The wounds are raw enough that when Steven was unable to give the detail about the sword in The Trial, she uncontrollably used her gem ability on the court.

On the other, we have someone like Yellow Diamond, who has had to run everything in her stead as well as maintain her own duties, and those of Pink Diamond, and deny those feelings day in and day out. Peridot called her the paragon of objectivity and reason. Peridot, who prides sound logic above all else when making a decision, put her faith in YD.

And YD couldn’t put aside her feelings about Earth, and the anger she and BD both felt about a planet that destroyed their friend and comrade, to listen to a plan with the potential to save Gem-kind.

That’s something I need to stress because it speaks of the depth of the wound inflicted by the war. More than that, it paints a more realistic image of YD. YD is someone trying to be the perfectly objective and emotionless leader, and most of the time she succeeds. She is the person she wants to be often enough that it’s become her reputation. That doesn’t mean the feelings go away. The irony of her being a feeling-gem is not lost here.

2. To YD, Leading is a “job” not a privilege

Keith and Shiro’s bond is stronger than we realize.

So after finishing season two not even 12 hours after it aired, and with many things becoming canon (aka Galra Keith), I had to go back to the first episode to watch it all again and actually understand every detail.

So we all know that Keith and Shiro were left stranded in a rocky planet full of lizard-like creatures that are not friendly at all. We see an injured Shiro, a distraught Keith and more importantly: both of them trying to desperately find each other. We see Shiro at his most vulnerable and Keith going through as many obstacles as needed: jumping across a void, running through geisers, almost dying…

He even has Shiro’s words in his mind all the time:

Let’s remember that Shiro BARELY remembers who Keith is, and their past together, in the Garrison or wherever it took place, is unclear. But Keith obviously remembers Shiro since the beginning, which is obvious since S01E01, when he rescues Shiro.

This conection, I’m positive, is bigger than what he has with Lance, Pidge or Hunk. I mean, sure, he has a bond with his fellow paladins, but hear me out: Shiro is his priority.

His connection and bond with Shiro comes from even before the other paladins even met.

Let’s start by one of the biggest moments: the Black Lion.

When Shiro is baldy hurt and in critical danger because of the alien lizards, the Lion, the one that was barely loyal to Shiro and even had an inclination for Zarkon, is still unactive while its paladin is near death. We all know Shiro had issues with his Lion that continue to develop, but what happens as soon as Keith tries to make contact with the Black Lion?

It recieves Keith. It lets Keith take control and safe Shiro. It let another paladin that had a totally different Lion hop in and take control.

You could say “yeah, Black did it for Shiro, it needed someone to control it to act and Keith was the only one, so it had no choice”, but let’s remember that Red could act without a pilot whenever Keith was in danger various times through the season. That either means that Keith has an outstanding connection to the Lions (which is totally possible, considering that he was the one to find the Blue Lion first), or the Black Lion recognized Shiro and Keith’s bond and trusted, I repeat, trusted Keith enough to control him, just as Shiro completely trusts Keith.

Which means that Shiro and Keith’s bond is gigantic, and perhaps one of the strongest within the paladins.

Also, the infamous quote:

There it is. It’s obvious. Shiro has all his trust placed on Keith, who he doesn’t even remember properly. And, oh, when did he say this? Right after he saw Keith and the Black Lion’s connection, and saw that Keith was able to lead the Black Lion without any issues, and now sees that Keith could lead Voltron.

And it’s not even a thing that happened once. It’s not just Shiro being delirious and wounded in a stranded planet with little to no hope of being rescued. He even says it again:

It is clear that this was no mistake. Shiro trusts Keith. He would place the huge duty of leading Voltron on him because he knows better than anyone of what Keith is capable, and makes sure that Keith knows.

That is the amount of trust they have in each other.

Second Moment: The Marmora Headquarters.

Now we get to see the bond from both sides: Shiro, worried to death as he sees Keith being beaten up over and over again, and Keith, still having Shiro as a predominant thought.

Shiro obviously doesn’t want Keith to go through the trials. He might die. Voltron would lose a paladin, and most importantly, Shiro might lose one of his most important conections to his past, Keith himself.

But then this scene comes up:

He smiles. There is relieve all over him when he sees Shiro coming to help him. And we know for a a fact that Keith Kogane does not smile often.

We are told that Keith is seeing his hopes and feares being materialized before him. I think the method they use is take the person’s biggest hope, and make that one hope throw all his fears at him. That would make anyone fall into despair, right?

And who is Keith’s biggest hope?

Takashi fucking Shirogane.

He is beaten up, has almost fainted, is losing hope, just wants the truth about his past and himself and where he comes from and who he is. But what does he want over all?

Edit: Shiro’s reaction during this moment.

So, yes, Keith is beaten up. He can barely stand up. He is weak, he is suffering, and Shiro, knowing he is in pain, intervenes without a doubt, and you know why? Because he knows how it feels to have your past torture you, to feel despair, to have your mind attack you, and he won’t let Keith go through that. So he forces his way through soldiers that could easily defeat him, as he is outnumbered, and places his own self in danger.

For Keith.

And as soon as he gets to Keith and has him with him, and he sees a soldier trying to attack Keith to take away the blade, it doesn’t even stop for a second and drops everything to go protect Keith.

To me, that’s who Shiro is: A man, broken and distraught by his past and his trauma, that will defend those he loves without doubting, even if it means that he will get hurt or die. He did the same for Matt in the Galra Prison: he placed himself in danger to save him. He did the same with Allura: he went back for her and got terribly injured in the process.

And now he does it for Keith.

Third point: Keith is growing.

This is an obvious point after he learned his Galra origins. Keith, either because of his new knowledge or because he now knows Shiro sees him as his right hand and possible future leader, becomes warmer, more open, even congratulates his teammates like Shiro does. He grows as a person and becomes more mature despite still being hotheaded:

This could be taken as him learning from Shiro, or trying to follow his advice to become a better person. Whatever it is, Keith is growing so much in a small amount of time. He is no longer a loner emo teen, but is opening to his surroundings and to new people, which we know didn’t happen before in his life since he is an orphan with almost no knowledge of his past, a loner, and a dropout.

If that is not what strong bonds do, then I don’t know what does.

More Moments:

Unlike Allura, who held a grudge against Keith for some episodes due to him having Galra blood in his veins, Shiro never attacked or was afraid of Keith. He knows his buddy is still there, that nothing has changed, and will still be there for him, Galra or not.

Keith is always checking, during battles, that Shiro is okay. He not only intervened in Zarkon’s laser at the end of season one so that he wouldn’t take the Black Lion, but he is, most of the time if not always, the first one to realize that Shiro is in trouble.

Shiro is the only one that says goodbye to him before their individual missions.

He is the first one and the most desperate to reach Shiro’s lion at the end of this season.

He is even placed as the focus of attention when they realize that Shiro is gone.

IN CONCLUSION: Shiro and Keith’s bond was extremely developed in this season and both characters, specially Keith, grew due to that bond. I hope that next season will give us more to this – specially the story of how they met – but this season did a great job developing both characters and making Keith not just a broody, emo boy with almost no time to develop.

let's talk about Ursa for a minute

I’ve heard a lot of people blame Ursa for the emotional damage inflicted on Azula. And while I agree that how Ursa treated Azula had a negative effect on the way she turned out, it’s unfair to all characters involved to look at their relationship in a vacuum. The Royal Family is very complex, and it’s important to consider the context before assigning blame for Azula’s situation.

sorry, but i don't really stay up to date with media or anything. I'm a star wars fan and i'm pretty excited for the new movie! in that meme you reblogged with the same reaction for fans/non-fans... i don't quite get it. Did the company do something bad? do other people just think it's not gonna be good? sorry for all the questions but i just wanted to stay informed xoxo

It’s a reference to the fact that a significant number of fans are dreading TLJ based upon their disappointment in the wake of TFA - and honestly, it’s not just limited to the major, outstanding offense of the OT characters’ arcs and achievements being backpedaled and undone.  There have been other strange and upsetting things concerning Disney’s marketing and stewardship of the franchise, rumored plot choices, etc. that have marginalized characters like Finn and Rose in favor of Emo Band-Aid, or excluded Lando despite the longest running film time in the saga’s history and a plot that could have easily accommodated him, etc. etc.

I’m no cranky old gatekeeper looking to ruin everyone else’s genuine good time, and many of my dash peeps have explained this in much better fashion; I also prefer not to air my personal opinions too often to minimize Drama™ but given that we’re literally on the threshold of the film’s release, I’m a human being with feelings and I’m going to voice some of them if I feel like it.

I sincerely started out enjoying TFA and I do love the new characters.  Just given where the new trilogy has gone, though, I would have preferred a different storyline or total separation between the old and new gang.  As my fellow dash peeps have said countless times, there was absolutely no necessity - other than to follow today’s current depressing “everything must be awful to be interesting” trend - to craft a tale completely obliterating the happy ending of the original trilogy and the sensible character arcs of Han, Leia, and Luke:

  • Han Solo: selfish nerd with a deeply buried heart of gold who’d obviously seen and been through a lot of shit who needed the right people and encouragement to listen to his conscience again and stop being afraid to commit himself to both a good cause and a wider set of friends.  Goes from “Better her than me!” to “[The temperature’s dropping too rapidly.] Yeah, and my friend’s out in it - I’ll see you in hell!” to “I’m sorry” to “When he comes back, I won’t get in the way.”  His arc is about finding companionship, belonging, and emotional openness.  He’s found a home and a family with these beautiful ragtag misfits.
  • Leia Organa: a fervently duty-bound young woman forged by trauma and pressed upon by staggering responsibilities into an icy diamond; she is hard and unyielding and unstoppable, and very emotionally repressed.  She has lost so much and can’t afford to lose more.  Yet a fluffy farmboy and a scruffy nerf herder worm their way into her heart.  Goes from “We have no time for our sorrows,” and “[Well, Your Highness, I guess this is it.] That’s right.” to “I love you” to “…Hold me.”  Her arc is also about emotional openness and embracing the hope and then reality that she can find love and gain a new family in spite of the destruction of her homeworld and the seemingly impossible war she helped lead.
  • Luke Skywalker: idealistic (yet pragmatic, in some ways) softboy who infectiously inspires everybody he comes in contact with to find the good within themselves, and has both a normal, down-to-earth bedrock upbringing and the strong personal moral compass to keep doing what he feels is right.  Goes from “I guess I’m going nowhere” to “Take care of yourself, Han; I guess that’s what you’re best at” to “[I feel like I can take on the whole Empire myself!] I know what you mean.” to “I’m looking for a great warrior” to “You want the impossible” to “They’re my friends, I’ve gotta help them” to “You’ll find I’m full of surprises” to “Ben…why didn’t you tell me” to “I warn you not to underestimate my powers” to “I can’t kill my own father” to “I’ve accepted that you were once Anakin Skywalker, my father…Come with me” to “Soon I’ll be dead, and you with me” to “I feel the good in you, the conflict” to “NEVER!!!” to “You’ve failed, Your Highness - I am a Jedi, like my father before me.”  He needed his dreams shattered to get a proper grasp on how to prevail in his circumstances - and the important part here is that he was already shattered in this trilogy, and put himself back together - but despite this, he kept on believing.  He chose to see the humanity in his father and defy the Emperor, the ultimate representation of the Dark Side, by a moral rather than physical victory.  He transcended the intentions of his teachers and became a Jedi in the truest sense by disputing his mentors and refusing to relinquish his devotion to his friends and an undeserving father.  Although he lost said father, he had the satisfaction of saving and freeing his soul and finding reconciliation with him, along with gaining a twin sister and a whole lot of new friends in comparison to his former, lonelier moisture farming life, and was equipped to carry on the knowledge of the Jedi with his own experiences to renew their doctrines.

In the new trilogy:

  • Han is implied to be a restless ne’er-do-well who could never escape the impulse to take off and not be around for his family, rather than being grateful and satisfied to finally have a stable life and a loving wife and friends who deeply cared for him.  He’s also painted as much more of an outright idiot and useless as a smuggler rather than a clever guy who just often finds himself in shitty situations
  • Leia is not allowed to hold on to anything in her life.  She must not only bear witness to even more planets being ruthlessly and callously destroyed, her own child grows up to commit patricide and it’s heavily implied that his genocidal tantrums are her and Han’s fault for being neglectful parents, as though being a woman with a demanding career automatically makes it impossible for her to raise a child properly, and never mind the fact that less-than-perfect-parenting from two people who still clearly loved their son is the flimsiest excuse for anyone to commit any level of murder
  • Luke is also not allowed to pass on his knowledge and bear any fruit for his hard-won labors.  His efforts to restore the Jedi go up in a flaming ruin, pointlessly bringing about a second shattering into his life for the express purpose of turning him into a grieving and bitter shadow of his former hopeful self who now abandons his found family rather than cleaving to them for support and encouragement as he always did before

The new films transform the OT into an ultimately hollow story in where there is no happy ending and nothing is learned and taken to heart.  The characters are doomed to suffer forever and not grow logically from their experiences.  This happens while we’re meant to get accustomed to the new team and watch them struggle to clean up the mess that apparently the older characters couldn’t fix after all.  It fosters a sense of nihilism - no one will ever get it right, and each new generation will just keep wading through another war and another war while making the same mistakes their elders did.

It sounds a liiiiiiiiiitle too much like reality for a story that’s supposed to be a space fairy tale.  If I want to be depressed, I’ll read the news.  If I want to be happy, I’ll go watch a star war.  Except oops, now I really can’t.

I’m well aware that plenty of folks don’t see it this way at all, and yes, duh, my response is biased.  Like I said, if you love the new movies, more power to you; it’s still a (mostly) free world.  But you asked, so I answered.

Here is the transcript from the panel only including the actual questions, for the people who cant watch / don’t have time / or who were triggered by some of the topics discussed.

All of the personal stories have been removed, this is just the questions that the fans asked and Jack answered. Some questions were left out as i either couldn’t hear it properly or they were too complicated to write out (only one or two). Enjoy!

Fan: I wanted to know if you could speak another language?

Jack: Uh, kinda? I mean- I barely speak english, so. I speak a small bit of Irish, French, Danish, a little bit of Korean. Not very well!

Fan: I have a serious question, do you want to go to prom with me?

Jack: I was waiting for some very strong political commentary or something. Dude i’ll go to prom with you! I’m not a cheap date though. Im gonna need a limo, a dress, flowers.. Ok, sure. No problem. Hit me up. Hit me up in the DMs. Slide into them DMs man.

Fan: Do you prefer the original ghostbusters or the remake?

Jack: What do you think? It’s like- Do you like to eat pizza, or do you like to eat garbage? Does that answer your question? [laughs]

Fan: What’s your favourite song?

Jack: Im gonna have to go with the opening to Peppa Pig. It’s the best. It’s hard to top that. [snorts] [quietly sings Peppa Pig theme song]

Fan: Whats your favourite soundtrack from a game?

Jack: Oh, Jesus. See, everyone wants me to say Undertale, and that’s a good one, but i’m going to have to go with Shadow of the Colossus. And thats not just because its my favourite game ever, i think the soundtrack is really good and it really compliments that game as well. And its epic, you should work out to that soundtrack. Just like, battling titans, its amazing.

Fan: Since you don’t like Guinness, what kind of beer do you like?

Jack: See i’m like the worst irishman. I like beer but it’s like, Miller and Coors. Im so not patriotic at all. I like light beers. Im sorry everybody!

Fan: Do you like Twenty One Pilots and if so, what’s your favourite song by them?

Jack: I started off listening to their Blurry Face album- [Audience cheers] Man, thats all i have to talk about is Twenty One Pilots and then i’m good? [Audience cheers again] My favourite song from them is Lame Boy.

Fan: I wanted to know what your favourite storyline series is on the channel? Aside from Shadow of the Colossus.

Jack: Oh god, hit me with all the big questions. I don’t know, there’s a lot of good ones that i’ve played that have really good stories. My current favourite one is Night in the Woods. I love it, it’s just so weird! “Im a total trash mammal”. But probably Undertale. I’m not pandering either, i really like it.

Fan: Is there something that you wanted to try in the next year that you haven’t tried before?

Jack: Hmm, how much am i allowed to say… One thing that i want to try more of, and i’ve said this in videos, is to try and do this kind of thing in a touring fashion. To try and go around- because we always go to these events, and we always go to panels at them, but not everyone can come to this and there’s people watching at home- Hi people at home! [waves at camera] So it kind of sucks because all of these events go on in places that certain people can’t get to. So im going to try and do a thing- its not going to be anything crazy. We’re just going to try and do a thing where we go to more places and try and do more of these at different venues. Hopefully, i don’t know how that’s going to work, we need to test it out first. It could be awful. But hopefully we can get it done.

Fan: What video was the most fun for you to make?

Jack: Oh god, there’s like four million of them. I don’t know, it’s different because different things are fun for different reasons. Recording certain series- recording Shadow of the Colossus was really fun because its my favourite game, and then recording The Last Guardian was awesome because that was the sequel to that. And then recording with these guys [gestures to Mark, Ethan, etc] is awesome as well because we always laugh a lot. Different games for different reasons, certain things that- well, its more the ones that stand out to me more so the ones that are ‘fun’. It’s easy to have fun but its hard for a game to have a huge impact on you.

So two games that come to mind that have had a huge impact on me was ‘That Dragon, Cancer’ because thats just a rollercoaster from start to finish. That and ‘The Beginners Guide’ was a big one for me. Because i remember when i finished recording that video i was like “Ok, people are going to like this. I love this, this was a good thing to record.” And it was a nice experience to share and i don’t often get to do that with games. Like its fun to do Happy Wheels and everything, but at the end of the day they all kind of blend together. These are the ones that stand out, and it’s the one that stand out and sit there for a very long time that mean the most to you. Not that they were the most fun to record, but they were the ones to kind of stay with me the longest.

Fan: Is there a game that you play that you’re not very fond of?

Jack: Ooo, good one. I don’t know, i don’t think there is. If there’s ever a game that i’m not really fond of i just don’t play it. I think that goes for a lot of people. Or if i get bored of something i usually stop playing it. Well a lot of games i don’t know what they’re going to be like until i play it. God i wish i had an example, im bad at this. What videos have i recorded?

Fan: If you were to discover a planet in outer space, what would you name that planet?

Jack: Well, Uranus is taken. So im going to have to go with Urectum.

Fan: What kept you motivated throughout your entire YouTube career even when things seemed like they would never go your way?

Jack: Its going to sound like a cop out, but literally the people who watch the videos. I know it sounds cheesy and it sounds like you’re pandering to the people, but thats the real reason. There’s always a time when you’re uploading stuff that you don’t know if its going to do well or you don’t know if people are going to like it, and sometimes it just takes off and people love it. Then there’s always the times when you feel really down and you can go into the comments or go on Instagram or Tumblr or Twitter or something, and you can see people saying really nice things, or you will see them drawing fan art of the game that you’ve played or telling you their story. Like the people who have come up and said that you’ve helped them a lot, its that kind of stuff that keeps you going.

Because it’s very easy when you’re doing YouTube to get very jaded by it, because there’s a lot of- like when you get super involved in it and you do it as your job and you’re doing it day after day all the time, its very easy for it to consume you and to make you feel a bit cynical about everything. I don’t know, like you kind of take for granted what you have. So its when you do things like this, when you meet people, when you hear their stories and you hear how much what you do means to them, even if you think its silly, that keeps you going. Because you mean a lot for other people, as much as the people mean for you when they watch your videos. It’s a very back and forth thing and i definitely think its the viewers who watch your content.

Fan: Does pineapple belong on pizza?

Fan: What do you want to say to all of the haters of pineapple on pizza out there?

Jack: Fuck you. There’s two types of people in the world, people who like pineapple on pizza, and people who are wrong [points at Mark]

Fan: When the full release [of Subnautica] comes out in May, are you going to re-do the series?

Jack: Yes. I mean, i feel like i kind of have to. Well i’ll probably skip a lot of the similar stuff like building bases and farming things [can’t hear what he said here] and whatever we haven’t seen or if stuff has changed or anything like that. I will definitely do it again, i love that game. The more Subnautica i get to play, the better. Its like the best game ever.

Fan: How is it like to make people smile every day?

Jack: It’s the best, man. Its awesome. It’s weird when you do- like i know that YouTube, what we do, people don’t consider it a job, but it is a job. And not a lot of people get to have that sort of feedback in their job or their line of work or the stuff that they like to do, or in their hobbies even. So its really cool that the stuff that we get to do that makes us happy, in turn reflects and makes other people happy, which in turn makes us happy, then it makes you happy. So its a really cool thing. I love it. I can’t imagine myself doing anything else anymore and it’s the best feeling in the world.

Fan: What’s a big goal that you want to achieve this year or in the next coming years?

Jack: Its like talking to a guidance counsellor again, like, ‘Where do you see yourself in five years?’. I don’t know, happy? [laughs]

Fan: It’s ok, happy is good. Stay happy!

Jack: I will try my best. As i said in the other question, i hope to do touring, and there’s other stuff that i’m trying to get done, that i can’t really say anything about and we don’t know if they’re going to happen or not so i don’t want to put stuff out there. As i said in the new years video i did, i just want to try and reach my potential or at least push past that. Because again, it’s very easy to just get complacent and just upload videos and do whatever, but you need to have that drive and that fire in you to keep going and try new things. I really want to try new things because i keep putting it off a lot of the time like, ‘oh, i have to make videos today i don’t have time for that.’

So i want to try and do more, and try and do bigger and better things because i always see other people do bigger and better things and its really inspiring. I want to try and reach that kind of potential as well. And i want to surprise people more than anything. I don’t want to just do the same thing over and over again and people think ‘oh its the loud, swearing Irishman.’ That’s cool, and that’s going to be on my gravestone, but i want to do more, and i want to as i said, surprise people and maybe do stuff that people thought i couldn’t do or stuff that i didn’t think i could do. I don’t know what that is, but we will find out together.

Fan: What’s it like knowing that thousands, millions of people support you in your dream even though 95% of them you’ve never met?

Jack: That is a weird thing, isn’t it? Because i always meet people and like all you guys here, a lot of you know who i am, some of you probably don’t, you probably just wandered in here, saw a crowd and was like ‘sure, whats going on in here?’ [laughs] So its really weird when you meet people and they know so much about you but you know almost nothing about them. Or maybe you know their username or their avatar and stuff like that, so i don’t know, it’s really bizarre. It’s a really surreal feeling, it’s awesome, i love that. I love that when you do YouTube you can reach so many different people, and not just world wide, there is so many people in different countries that speak languages that i had never even heard spoken, that you can see watched your video and im like, how? That kind of stuff is just so cool. I’m always fascinated by it. I don’t think i’ll ever stop being fascinated by it.

Fan: When did you and Signe meet? And how?

Jack: We actually met through Tumblr, which is really weird. Whenever i tell people that, they are kind of like ‘Oh.. i don’t know..’ Oh, we have five minutes! Ok, really fast. So, i was on Tumblr one day, and i was looking at a cool thing, and then she was like ‘hey dude wassup’ and i was like ‘yo girl wassup’ and then i was like ‘oh awesome.. thats pretty cool’ [laughs]

No, she had drawn some stuff of me a long time ago and then we just got talking. I can’t remember what we got talking about first, i’m terrible. And then i needed- I asked her if i could use one of her pieces of art in a thumbnail for a fan game that was done, so we just kind of got talking through that. And then she was doing a livestream on her birthday, and she was drawing me in it, so i stopped in, creepily. And i just said, “Hey, you better draw me pretty.” as a joke and she said “Go fuck yourself.” so i was like [nods head] Suh dude? [laughs] Its not just some magical fairytale, i didn’t ride in on a white horse brandishing a blade. I’m such a Casanova, right?

New Order

In The Last Jedi, Rey teams up with Luke Skywalker – but he’s not the man we remember. And that’s not the only shock. Total Film talks to the key players about the Star Wars movie that changes everything.

Total Film Magazine

“Luke Skywalker has vanished,” announced the opening crawl to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And vanished he remained, for pretty much the entire running time of the seventh instalment in the space saga.

Sure, his presence hung heavily over that film, the first Star Wars movie in a decade, and the first to follow on from the events of 1983’s Return Of The Jedi. Luke ended that particular film a pretty well-balanced Jedi Knight, having helped destroy the evil Empire while resolving some of his daddy issues with Darth Vader. He was last spotted at a victory celebration on Endor, watched over by the Force ghosts of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Vader/Anakin. What could go wrong?

Cut to 30 years later and the events of The Force Awakens, and Luke is nowhere to be seen – save for a brief flashback – until the final moment when he’s handed his trusty lightsaber by Rey (Daisy Ridley), a young scavenger from the desert planet Jakku who has recently discovered Force sensitivities of her own. The long hair and grey beard can’t disguise the tormented scowl of the galaxy’s original golden boy.

This is not the Luke we remember. As Mark Hamill himself puts it to TF, “It’s shocking to hear Luke say, ‘I know only one truth: it’s time for the Jedi to end’ – the last time we saw him, he was the most optimistic character. He was sort of at the peak of his powers, and you would imagine that he’d then become a Jedi master and train other people and so forth. What has happened to him that has so traumatised him into where he is now?”

That is the question that drives The Last Jedi, aka Episode VIII. In 2015, J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens was a critical and commercial smash, putting Star Wars back on top (after the plastic prequels squandered fan goodwill), scoring more than $2bn at the global box office and an overwhelmingly positive response.

Last year’s standalone ‘Story’ Rogue One was also a hit to the tune of $1bn, proving that the world was ready for adventures outside the core episodic structure. But now we’re back to the narrative throughline of Rey, Kylo Ren, Finn, Poe… and of course, Leia and Luke. (The journey of the former, who we’ve seen go from orphan to princess to spy to senator to general of the Resistance during the franchise, is apparently unaltered in The Last Jedi, despite Carrie Fisher’s death meaning this will be her last Star Wars movie.)

“Watching the film, there’s going to be a very emotional reaction to
what she does in this movie,” says TLJ director Rian Johnson. The indie auteur behind Brick, The Brothers Bloom and Looper, he’s something of a Padawan when it comes to blockbuster filmmaking on this scale.

Johnson’s the only person besides George Lucas to have a solo writer-director credit on a Star Wars movie, and it seems he used that autonomy to make some pretty bold choices, even in a series celebrated for its twists.

anonymous asked:

i'm sorry it why do you ship junkrat with mei?? if you haven't noticed or actually played overwatch, you'd know that mei hates junkrat, they despise each other and they're total opposites. and no, opposites don't always attract.

Ladies and Gentleman, we have a first!

In the two or so years I’ve had this blog, I’ve never had an antagonistic anon before. Then again, I only ever started branching out into non-Soul Eater things in September, so maybe this is just what happens when you start to create content for bigger fandoms?

First things first: If you don’t like the content I post, I suggest that you either unfollow my blog or use blacklist to block the tags for content you don’t like. Your Tumblr experience is curated by you. I’ll tag my content to help you blacklist topics you wish to avoid, but it’s ultimately up to each user to take the necessary steps to tailor their dashboard.

Secondly, in sending me a rude ask, you have given me an excuse to talk about a favorite ship of mine. So buckle up, we’ve got a long post incoming!

Why ship Junkrat and Mei? Why ship any two characters?

Take a gander at this post by @chaoticlivi. It’s a pretty exhaustive list of reasons people get invested in the relationship between any two characters. They span from aesthetic and visual tastes (these two look great together!) to more in depth, thematic ones (their relationship embodies a theme I care about). Basically, there are many many reasons to love a ship, and canon rarely has much to do with it.

In general, canon is a box of scraps. This is especially true for Overwatch, which despite its exhaustive lore leaves many holes in character stories and relationships. Nothing in the game itself (which I do play often, btw) is ‘canon.’ The voicelines you hear haven’t actually happened. They are meant to give us insight into the characters, their histories, and their relationships, but you can’t quote them as something Mei or Junkrat have actually said.

In-game content is also in flux. As more shorts and comics come out, as the actual Overwatch lore grows, the game evolves too. It’s possible what’s canon within the game now will change later on.

What I’m saying is, you can point at two voicelines and wave around words like ‘hate’ until you are blue in the face, but that won’t 1) make it canon that Junkrat and Mei will be at odds forever or 2) make me any less likely to ship them.

Now that I’ve got the “shipping doesn’t need a canon basis and Overwatch shipping is a crapshoot built on nearly nothing anyway” part done, I can actually talk about Mei and Junkrat.

My not so secret boyfriend-Shiro Ship Week Day 7

Last day! I really like this one because the prompt I used was really funny. I hope I didn’t make the others look like assholes too much. Anyway enjoy the shance, and remember, season 3 is in 2 days.
Free Day

Lance laughed at what his boyfriend had said. He could see his roommate Keith looking at him, so he decided to cut the conversation short.

“Hey babe, I got back to my room. Can I talk to you later?…ok, talk to you soon. Love you, bye.”

“Oh no, don’t hang up on my account. Please continue talking to your pretend boyfriend.”

Lance sighed and rolled his eyes. None of his friends seemed to believe he had a boyfriend and defiantly not the one he was describing. Shiro was a 6’3, drop dead gorgeous model of a man, with arms large enough to crush a watermelon. But because of the lack of pictures or proof, his friends didn’t believe he existed. It wasn’t his fault that Shiro didn’t use the most obvious platform of Facebook and his Instagram was private and his Twitter was in Hiragana. All the pictures they had, were either at home or Shiro had them. Lance had always been a bit private about his relationship - surprising given his flirty nature - so he didn’t want to bring pictures he could just pull up on his phone or computer.

When his friends had asked if he had a girlfriend or boyfriend, he told them about Shiro but none of them believed Lance could land a guy like that.

“What, you think I can’t get a hot guy?”

Why I love Superman and Wonder Woman.

Why do you like them? But they are not supposed to be together. They have traditional love interests. Why are you supporting this relationship? It’s sexist. It’s boring and predictable. They are too alike. They too different.

Well look here, first of all I don’t need anyone’s approval to care for what I respond to in fiction. I like what I like because I am me. I am not you. You don’t even have to agree with me. That’s okay. We can all like what we like. What I don’t appreciate is  people telling me what I should like. Or calling me sexist. I am a female fan and never in all my life have I ever been accused of that. I mean, what the hell? People don’t know my upbringing, my culture, my experience and therefore can’t dictate what should emotionally move me. So yes I flew in the face of tradition and went with this pairing. And that word tradition? It’s important but we never should be a slave to it. If we all stuck to tradition for the sake of it, we’d never have progressed and art and literature would never push boundaries and encourage us to grow and think. We’d blindly accept what we’re fed.

I never shipped before. Never. I liked romance. But never got too caught up in the details to wonder about the characters and what drove them and how they might evolve and the untold stories. But this one hooked me. Hooked me maybe when I was not even shipping. As a  young girl I saw Lynda Carter’s Diana and fell in love with her and what she could do. Steve Trevor? All I recall was finding him as a kid  kinda yucky. Hey, I was 7. Those things did not really matter to me back then.  I fell for Wonder Woman when she was without a love interest and the same happened when I picked up her in comics. She had no official love interest. Steve having been aged to an older type brother with Etta as his love interest and funnily enough he was really likable. Superman…well I liked the movie. Margot’s Lois, well, she was there. I can’t recall feeling anything strongly for her but again I was a kid. Reeve made the impression. Handsome and heroic.

Anyway I think Superman and Wonder Woman sort of got into my subconscious starting with the Super Friends. A more innocent time and simple story telling but I really liked when they teamed up and helped each other out. Was cool when I went onto the playground…I was saving people with the boys when we all played heroes. I wasn’t waiting for them to pretend save me.

I had liked Lois and Clark the TV series but it did not make me ship. Dean and Teri were probably the only Lois and Clark I rooted for because they were Dean and Teri, two very charming actors in a show that was a fun rom com and one that did not really explore the concept of Superman. You can’t have a good Superman story without exploring Superman I believe. If one just wants Clark don’t give him powers or a mission to better the world. You can’t ignore one for the other and I won’t get into the ethics of journalism and what real truth and accountability should entail. That will take me off on a tangent. But it matters. You can’t say you’re for truth or good journalism when you conveniently skip over the very things that defines them. Anyway Kingdom Come pretty much made me reevaluate the way I saw superheroes. Really question the motivations and the actions of heroes and finally see that they could be flawed and yet still heroic. And see things we never saw, like them facing their mortality and falling down and picking themselves up. Just like us. Really asking genuine questions instead of glossing over themes of morality, truth, sacrifice, heroism, aging, mortality, leadership, responsibility etc to preserve the status quo .

I went and picked up comics because of this graphic novel. I learned more about the heroes as individuals. I grew to love and respect them both. And I started to fall in love with them as a couple even when they were not a couple. Kingdom Come was about the potential but their canon relationship of close friends with some unresolved tension was the foundation.

A relationship could never be seen as predictable if you have no clue what will happen. Even the SM/WW detractors do not know what will happen but we all sort of know the endgame and been on a lot of journeys with the traditional love interests. So those are predictable. Does not make the fact we had many journeys better as well. Another journey and story could very well be just as interesting and if new, even riper for a creative mind to explore. So no, they are not predictable.

There is nothing sexist about two strong, capable and intelligent individuals working together. If they are in a relationship…it simply brings in a new dynamic of intimacy that you would not get if, say Batman teamed up with Superman. But nonetheless it is a team up of equals. And for those who want to keep Diana out of the book because, according to them, it harms her? Seems to me that is saying there is little faith in her to be able to stand as Clark’s equal. If you want to prove a woman is as capable as a man, then you give her the equal treatment. You don’t avoid the situation. You don’t keep her out of the book. That’s an admission of failure or trying to shield her from being challenged. And a good writer has to step up to the challenge. No longer does Superman get to be the man. The alpha male who saves the day. The writer has to dig deep and actually write a relationship of equals now between a man and woman, who can hold her own, as there is no major discrepancy in their power sets where one has to logically stand by while the other saves. If they were both street level it really makes no difference. They are equals in terms of what they could do, ie their training and experience. Strength is a factor when it comes to the foes created so they can have credible threats or the power set they display. But, again, it does not define their morality. So as a superwonder fan I did not match them up because they are just strong. That’s a misconception spread by detractors who don’t understand the characters. You give them powerful foes because they were created as powerful heroes. No writer has to jump through hoops to make Diana his equal ie giving her convenient powers or making her a plot device to drive the plot to give him a motivation. She was actually created to be his equal because Marston knew there was a genuine need for a strong example of female empowerment. She is an equal in the solving of a problem and dealing with a menace.

There are some writers who are comfortable with having one hero being the savior and then they compensate for his/her doing the saving by making the love interest somehow indispensable to the character’s maturity, morality and even heroism. I don’t subscribe to that. No love interest should define any hero’s motivation and morality. To say that one person alone is why they care is totally against the reason why these two characters were created. It’s simply pandering. If anyone came and told me Diana needs Steve and Steve alone to value humanity, or he alone somehow is the best of humanity,  I will say NO. Just No. Similarly Clark’s goodness and empathy for his adopted planet is not reliant on one person. Both Clark and Diana have met and interacted with many good people, human and non human. All of these people, along with their upbringing, should help contribute to them becoming the people they are. And with that is the choices they make. One reason I love them is because it has been made clear in previous canon and the new 52 these two would put the world first. It is not about themselves.  To make it about one’s self/ love interest  makes the hero a  weak character. With or without each other they should be able to be heroes and appreciate life. Life is not defined by the life span of one person. They are both characters with longevity. They were created/evolved over the decades that way. To ignore this is to ignore what they are. Maybe this is why in so many Elseworlds Superman runs away, hides, quits or goes evil when life tosses him a curve ball because one love interest is not around. Writers do a disservice to any character when they make it about one person. We wouldn’t expect Lois or Steve’s goodness to be defined whether Clark or Diana lives or dies, would we? I would hope not. They supposed to be individuals in their own right who are brave and good at what they do. Love interests can provide love and companionship etc but certainly all characters, be they heroes or supporting cast, should never be crippled because they can’t romance x or y.

Diana also challenges Clark. It maybe that it brings a difference of opinion as in Kingdom Come or Sacrifice or The New Frontier or even my favorite JL A League of One…but behind it all is the goal to help save the world. In Doomed she was having none of his let me save you. She would stand with him. Even race him to it. She also takes away that guilt and burden he normally would feel when he has to leave. When they part, it’s to have trust and faith in the other to do the job they know they have to do. She does what needs to be done too. In Doomed Diana was in tears but she had the guts to slay the man she loved to save the world if he turned into a monster. Now that takes so much damn courage and he knew she would do it too. He trusted her to put the world first on so many occasions. When they blew up the nuclear plant to stop Zod and Mongul, they sacrificed themselves, their budding love for the greater good. Clark and Diana cares for the world. Anyone saying they would betray it or their principles I believe does not get who they are and clearly not reading the books. Their love strengthens their resolve and they learning they are  better together.

And challenging is what characters need to grow. To look at things from a different point of view. Be it Clark’s grounded upbringing to Diana’s royal one. They have the same goals in life but different up-bringing. And these contrasts are rich for story telling. Diana, adapting to our world, is always learning too and Clark can provide an insight into the humdrum of everyday life. Does not mean he is teaching her how to act, any more than if he came to live on her island and learn about her culture and her ways.  Every character needs to learn and grow. If any writer has a character so mary sued he/she needs to learn nothing…well there is not point in telling a story about their journey. And if you are a couple, you learn compromise and learning to be together, and at times it can be scary or intimidating. Giving and taking in a relationship is not an affront to feminism. A relationship of equals is about reciprocation.  Soule did this to great effect in Power Couple Vol 1.

They both can truly empathize with what the other has to deal with. They both on some level feel a loneliness due to the fact that they are different.  He is an alien , who hides the truth about himself. The whole world is not enamored with him. That’s got more pathos than everyone suddenly accepting this guy to police them over night. He has to work for their trust.  She is a demi goddess whose birth was a shameful secret and now is  part of a dysfunctional family. Some fans accuse us of pairing up two people only because they are good looking and wear matching colors. Well, first of all I never knew any of their traditional love interests to be plain or even set up as underdogs. If anything the underdogs were always Clark Kent and Diana Prince. They struggled to get the attention of the object of their desire over the years, who were often seen a beautiful and glamorous and handsome and heroic and the best at what they could do. So let us debunk that notion Clark and Diana have it easy as individuals or  as a couple and their traditional love interests had it hard.

We can all have a ton of friends but it doesn’t mean we will find that one person to love, who will understand what drives us or makes us fearful or understands what it means to feel different.  Their friendship in old canon showed how often they turned to each other to find intellectual and emotional comfort by venting and sharing. It must feel different to have someone you come home to and you tell them about a battle or the people you lost in a battle…they know. They know how that feels. The burdens and the weight of being an inspiration and leadership. They can understand  because they walked in those shoes. And there was never any conditions to their friendship and even now their love. She did not care for him because of what she could get or vice versa. For me, it is so refreshing to read a relationship that is not reliant on the cliched will they/won’t they troupe and one that  is not dysfunctional. Sure they learning and sure they’ll make mistakes…no one is perfect…but I love that both are fairly open and optimistic characters and we  seeing them humanized via this relationship.

For far too often we have been inundated with bad boy/good girl dynamics in media, be it the cad or the moody, damaged soul.  The noble, good man with no psychological hangups is considered by some as boring. And it is commonly the woman who has to fix the damage. Put up with what is essentially BS. And her reward? She gets to sleep with him, he wins her. Oh yay. I eye roll here. I am tired of that. It is a lazy troupe. It is a poor message to send to girls and boys. It goes both ways too. I don’t subscribe to a female character treating a male like crap and then the male gets her as some prize when she finally opens her eyes to see what was always before her. You should be with someone who treats you right. Someone who respects you. Someone who does not abuse you emotionally. Someone who wants to be with you. I could go on and on and if you’re really against sexism, then no way should anyone charge or label  Superman and Wonder Woman as that. He treats her with respect. Loves her. Admires her strength. Diana values him for who he is. She always saw past the glasses. Now and even back then. He always trusted her with his secret. Real love is based on truth, trust and faith. Not dysfunctional and unhealthy dynamics no person would want for themselves or someone they care about. As a confident Amazon, raised to know her worth, who is compassionate, Diana being attracted to Clark makes so much sense. She would be drawn to this man than any other. This noble, grounded, humble man who uses his gifts for good. He is such a contrast to the power hungry Gods of Olympus. She fights for peace, well here is a man who understands the value of that and opts for justice, not vengeance . And sure she could reach out to damage souls but she does not have to sleep with them to do it. (So this is why I never shipped her with moody mission obsessed Batman. No to Orion as well. Friends for sure who she can help but not as  lovers.)  Clark would be drawn to her courage, compassion and her truthfulness and the fresh, honest eyes she would have as a newcomer looking at our world. That she could easily keep up with him and even kick his ass would more than well be a source of fascination. Diana has so many burdens as well. Princess, at times Ambassador and now God of War; how nice to have a companion who is not a jerk or needy. One who is proud to be with you. He learned  from her self acceptance and that he does not need anyone’s approval to be with her. That being open can be uplifting.  And she loves the beard!

I could go on and on, but for me, these two characters hold so much fascination. I hope DC do not end them any time soon. Give them their time this canon.  Some of of us who shipped before have waited years. We saw the potential. Those who came on board now came on board because THIS did the job with them, despite what comics and live media presented. So it’s not as if we did not have a choice. We did. We just prefer this. There is great potential to go beyond the stories we are accustomed to seeing because one couldn’t have Superman or Wonder Woman’s world change too much if something as simple as time was allowed to play out. It was sort of stuck in amber  yet it was making these broad statements about the characters morality/ heroism without any real, deep examination of what challenges they would face over time. Now I think we can push the envelope to explore other themes. And since the new 52 Clark and Diana have constantly been tested.

It doesn’t hurt  Clark/Diana represent the zeitgeist and they inspire so many people in the real world. They’ve opened up channels among fans. So many diverse fans too. Different ages, gender, orientation, races…all mainly very open minded people. We are grateful to DC for being brave and exploring it.. End if the day it’s fiction and it may not last forever. But it won’t stop  me from loving it. I was into it before and most likely be into it after it’s gone. It’s nice to have it and say it is official. Nice to open up the books and read this superwonderful relationship unfolding and not have other disgruntled fans tell you you’re being stupid to ship something that will never be. And you know I have seen so many  positive  things as a result of the coupling being a joint admin for the hellyeahsupermanandwonderwoman blog.  Fans feel encouraged to be true to themselves; to reach and fulfill their own potential and be good to others. To be a Superman, to be a Wonder Woman. It’s basically empowering yourself, whether you find your Superman or Wonder Woman is a bonus. You live up to your vast potential. That is a good message I think for anyone.

Sanvers Week Day 2 - Nerd Girlfriends

In all her years of being wined and dined by well-intentioned young men she tried so hard to love, Alex hoped she’d learned a thing or two about how to treat a lady.

But when Maggie first came over to her apartment with pizza and beer, to make all her hopes come true and kiss her for what felt like the first time, Alex had blurted out that she wanted to take her on a date before she even realised that she’d never planned one in her life.

Where the hell did lesbians go for dates anyway? She didn’t think she’d ever seen any at the movies, at a restaurant… Did they just go to gay places? Is that why she’d never noticed?

The doubt must have shown on her face, because Maggie had smiled a little and tucked some of Alex’s hair behind her ear. “Danvers, you really don’t have to. I feel like I should take you out first. You know, to show you how the other half live,” she joked.

“Pfft, thank you, but I’ve got this,” Alex chuckled, eyes flitting anywhere but into the too-warm intensity of Maggie’s. “I can plan a date. I’m the best at planning dates. I’m…I’m known for it.”

hannigram - an abusive relationship?

Spoiler alert: it’s not. (But it kind of is. I’ll go in depth about that in a moment.)

I wrote this for a conversation I had in twitter, and thought I wouldn’t need to post it here, but since I saw yet another person claiming that hannigram is abusive I thought I’d post this.

People use the term abusive about relationships that are unhealthy (in their opinion), as evindence for why it should not be shipped/supported. The correct definition of abuse is:

“Treating badly or injurously, mistreating, especially psysically.”

And of relationship abuse it is:

“A pattern of abusive and coercive behaviors used to maintain power and control over a former or current intimate partner. Abuse can be emotional, financial, sexual or physical and can include threats, isolation, and intimidation. Abuse tends to escalate over time. When someone uses abuse and violence against a partner, it is always part of a larger pattern of control.”

So according to this it is abusive, I get it. They both try to kill each other multiple times, they manipulate and lead each other on. They don’t sexually abuse each other though, which at least in my opinion is the worst sort of abuse and I couldn’t ship a couple who did that to one another.

The other thing in this description that doesn’t quite match Hannigram is “abuse tends to escalate over time – it is always a part of larger pattern of control”. The mental abuse between them is at it’s worst in S1 where Hannibal manipulates Will into believing he’s a killer - but this is not to show his power over him, it is simply the only way Hannibal can bring Will into his life. Hannibal has after the first half of S2 been ready to drop the manipulation and violence between them as soon as Will does. And I haven’t seen anyone blame Will of being the main abuser, even though it could be argued that it’s solely his fault that the abuse continues.

The reason why Hannigram doesn’t fit the normal description of abuse is because their relationship is meant to be read as symbolic, not as a literal ideal of love. It’s fiction, and it should be treated as such. Fiction is great, because we can explore possibilities and relationships etc. that aren’t possible in real life. Thankfully the majority in this fandom are really intelligent and understand this, and only few people have failed at understanding what the shoe is about. That group still exists, and that’s why I felt the need to post this

What I believe the antis actually mean when they say it’s abusive is not just that it is violent and manipulative, but that “It’s an abuser/abused relationship, Hannibal is evil and Will is innocent, their relationship won’t work and does more bad than good for both of them, or at least for Will”.

Like I said earlier, it’s not a healthy relationship and it’s not one that I literally want for myself or for anyone I care about - but it’s not unbalanced. At least when we reach the end of third season they are certainly equals, there’s no denying it. I understand that some people don’t ship it because it’s too far from an ideal realtionship, and that’s okay, but hating on it and denying the fact that they’re equals who both choose each other in the end is just plain ignorant.

Will has always been alone, always been different. His relationship with Hannibal gets so close so fast because Hannibal is the first person who actually sees him. I’m gonna quote a Hannigram fic here because I think it described their relationship so well. (Will to Hannibal:) “You always wanted me to be the best version of myself when no one else accepted me for what I already was.” Just like Hannibal let Will see him, Will also let Hannibal see him. Hannibal didn’t “make an innocent puppy become a murderer”, he helped him to become what he already had the potential for.

If the antis and/or deniers have only seen season one, I need to admit that I understand them. Will did kind of seem like an innocent dog loving introvert back then if you didn’t pay much attention to details (like how coldly he treats the parents of the missing girl, how he isn’t afraid of human contact but despises it, how his humor is so dark that it often shocks his colleagues and friends and so on. I could make a post about this, if anyone is interested about that let me know). The first season is about Hannibal manipulating everyone into thinking Will is a killer, experimenting on Will and he does seem like a coldhearted psychopath there.

In season two we see Will gaining more power back, him manipulating and even seducing Hannibal. He isn’t afraid to kill a man in the progress, he eats people with Hannibal almost flirtatiously. This is not what an “innocent” man would do, or even what innocent man physically could do. The darkness inside him is becoming more clear, and even he himself admits that even though he wants to, he can’t hate Hannibal.

Will (to Peter): “I envy your hate. Makes it much easier when you know how to feel.”

He still betrays Hannibal in mizumono (even though he does call him at the last minute to warn him). Before I always though it was just because Will was still trying to cling to some sort of morality, but after Hugh’s comments it is obvious that Will was also afraid Hannibal didn’t and/or couldn’t love him the way he loved him, and so he thought it would be dangerous for him to run away with him and trust Hannibal with his life and wellbeing. Here is what Hugh said:

“I think Will has probably in some way never conceived the possibility that Hannibal could be in love. I mean, he’s got such a black heart. The awareness that they have this connection is something Will knows and is probably in some way profoundly ashamed of, and is also, you know, he keeps coming back to and actually kinda fills him with joy as well. But I don’t think he’d ever give it the name love, because I don’t think he’d ever associate love with Hannibal. – He’s never thought of Hannibal as being capable of love. Because like most of us, he probably had love put off on a kind of pedestal, as an idea, a more perfect thing, as he made the awful realisation: ‘Oh crap, maybe this thing I’m feeling is like love.‘”

I think it is clear to everybody at this point that Hannibal loves Will. His love, though, isn’t your typical “murderer obsessed with a beautiful and innocent woman (obviously man in this case)”. Hannibal loves Will because they understand each other, because they share a way of seeing the world, but also because they have interesting conversations and because they share the same sense of himor and have fun together. In a way, it’s just normal love, just deeper and richer since neither of them has ever had a change to explore that kind of love with anyone else before.

So to conclude: if you take it literally, yes, it is abusive, but that doesn’t make it wrong to ship it, by Hannibal standards at least. (The whole show is a little fucked up so if you can’t live with that why are you here?) Also, it has been abusive until this point only because they (well, mostly Will) have still struggled to accept their feelings for each other. Hannibal has only physically hurt Will if he has betrayed his trust or tried to hurt him first. Personally I don’t believe Hannibal would ever hurt Will again if they were to be a real couple. He also stopped the mindgames and manipulation as early as when Will got out of prison, knowing what he was. And Will has hurt and betrayed Hannibal mostly because of the reasons I stated earlier, because he thought it was the only way to save himself. If they stopped their game of cat and mouse (a game of cat and mouse where the roles change from time to time, or maybe even better description would be a game of cat and cat like Bryan called it) I wholeheartedly believe that they could live in a relationship where neither of them abuses the other.

Like Bryan once said, the core of their relationship is that:

“They had imagined they were unique before they saw each other. Obviously it took Will longer to appreciate that because he didn’t quite realize what he was dealing with in Hannibal, but Hannibal sees it instantly. It’s two people who have never been - I mean Will probably wears it heavier - but still, essentially alone in the world and then see some kind of, maybe not mirror image but the other side of their coin.”

And like Hugh said:

“In a sense the two of them have been wandering the Earth, totally isolated, because they have such a specific and elevated mentality. Not identical, but it is as if not only are you the greatest chess player on the planet, you’re actually the only person on the planet that can play chess. And then suddenly you walk into a roon one day and there’s a guy playing chess. I think that’s how they feel about each other.”

If you leave out the murder and cannibalism and manipulation, Hannigram is about two people who are different than anyone else finding love in each other. Their relationship evolves slowly from friends to lovers, and even though they try to move on neither of them can because they share something so intimate. So in its own, weird and symbolic way, i think Hannibal and Will’s relationship is build on a much better base and is possibly even healthier than many other ships and canon couples out there.

note from kelly: hey guys. so we pretty much got the same request 3 times just worded differently, so i hope its okay if i change this one up a bit and make it a 2 part story about family, feuds and love. hope you enjoy :)

chapter song: american teen / khalid

i was the black sheep in the family.

there was no secret, i wasn’t like the rest of them. i was different and yet i still felt loved by everyone in my family, everyone except chuck that is.

chuck was my older brother. he was a year older than me and we were on completely different planets.

he was popular.

i wasn’t.

he had a large group of friends.

i only had 3.

it was never competition between chuck and i, because he would win.

he was chuck.

and i was y/n

“y/n! chuck! garret! come and get your lunch please!” my mother yelled from the other room, her voice booming throughout our otherwise quiet house.

for a small lady she certainly had a loud voice.

“im coming mom!” my younger brother garret responded, causing the beast to rise.

“g, shut up. you’re so loud.” chuck complains, his voice deeper and more scary in the morning.

“sorry chuck.” my little brother whined.

and with that, i grab my backpack and i head downstairs.

“morning mom.” i mumbled, still half asleep.

“hey baby, your fruit is in the fridge.” she replies, kissing me on the cheek. her sticky red lipstick almost gluing her lips to my face.

“sorry about that sweetie.” she giggles, licking her thumb and wiping the lipstick off of my face.

i see my brother sitting by the kitchen table, eating some cereal.

“morning chu-”

“yeah.” he interrupts me mid greeting, clearly not interested.

“okay..” i roll my eyes. i shouldn’t even try.

“chuck, i need you to take your brother and sister to school.” mom recalled in passing.

“what? why” chuck hesitated, looking at my mother and then over to me.

“all of the school bus drivers are on strike and- you know what? i don’t need to explain anything to you mr.” she states, placing her hands on her hips.

and that was that. garret and i were in chuck’s car, driving to school. it was a short drive to the elementary school, and once we dropped garret off we were on the way to riverdale high.

riverdale high was a very complex school. lots of different cliques, lots of different personalities. over the summer things had shifted within the dynamics of the school. cheryl blossom showed some kind of vulnerability, which is strange because she had always been so stoned faced that i was completely convinced that she was a robot. so when she had her mental breakdown at the football game everyone was left quaking.

the most significant change though? jughead jones becoming a serpent, leaving our high school and moving back to the south side.

“what the fuck is he doing here?” chuck says to himself as he pulls into an empty spot.

“who?” i ask, looking over at him super confused.

“him.” chuck spits, his eyes filling with rage.

i glance over and i see jughead jones. hair slicked back, leather jacket hanging lazily off of one shoulder. cigarette behind one ear, hand placed firmly against a motorcycle.

good god.

jughead got..hot.

im totally staring. like i can’t look away. he was waiting for someone, but who?

“yo jones!” my brothers voice booms across the quad, alerting everyone.

as my brother walks closer to jughead, the ‘oohs” and ‘uhhs’ are audible from the student body, watching chuck walk along the path.

“chuck don’t.” i plead, like he needed to get into any more fights.

“stay out of it.” he warns.

the crowd begins to separate as jughead turns around to face chuck. he looks over at chuck and then at me. it was like time stopped when we looked into one each other’s eyes.

“heyyyy y/n.” jughead nods at me, his raspy voice sending shivers down my spine.

“hey jughead.” i wave awkwardly.

he steps forward, smiling at me. completely ignoring my very angry brother.

“step back donnie darko.” my brother voices, steping in front of me and between myself and jughead.

“oh come on chuck, i was talking to the pretty lady.” he remarks, smiling over at me again making my stomach flip.

“yeah, unfortunatley she’s not interested.” my brother chuckles.

“who said i’m not?” i pipe up, immediately regretting what i said.

the crowd all of a sudden burts up into gazes and whispers. the words exchanged between jughead and chuck now got personal. family was involved.

my brother was silent. staring at me, shocked.

i glance at jughead and he shoots a look back at me with a smirk.

“yeah y/n why don’t you shut the fuck up.” chuck swore, his words sharp.

“no, i’m okay.” i shrug.

the next few moments were a blur.

my brother turns around and faces me.

“you’re a fucking worthless piece of trash, im honestly ashamed to be related to you.” he scoffed.

all of a sudden there was a lump in my throat.

the crowd goes back to the ‘oohs’ and ‘uhhs’, i can even see cheryl laughing.

“but the irony of this is, you think that these people care what you have to say. they don’t. you’re a nobody and-”

before my brother could finish his speech on 101 reasons why y/n is a loser, i see him fly across the quad into a crowd of tstudents, landing right onto the floor.

jughead lunges on top of chuck, throwing punches left right and centre.

everyone runs to group around the two, except archie. he ran up to jughead and snatched him up off of my brother, leaving chuck lying on the floor.

“jug, cool down.” archie begs, trying to calm the serpent down.

jughead looks over at me, his gaze intense.

“nobody will ever talk to you like that again.” he says through heavy breathing,

i’m frozen in pure shock.

“i promise.” he says re-adjusting his leather jacket, getting onto his motorcycle.

from that day, i wasn’t aware of what i had just gotten myself into. a world full of sex, lies, drugs and what I knew was pure love.

part 2 coming soon..

Theory: White Diamond IS Homeworld

I’ve been thinking a lot of White Diamond since Wanted premiered, and I thought of a wild theory when we saw what everyone is assuming is some form of statue of WD when we got that glimpse of Homeworld, and that was portrayed in the title card:

Mainly because of the resemblance it bears to White Diamond’s mural in the moon base:

I’m inclined to agree, to be honest.

Onto my theory now. Looking at that giant statue I thought wow, White Diamond must have been a big deal and must be a big deal on Homeworld. Now there’s lots of theories about White Diamond floating around, some of them including the thought that perhaps she was the gem in the tomb in “Serious Steven”, or that perhaps she is a fusion of Blue, Yellow and Pink Diamond and we cannot see her now since Pink Diamond is shattered.

So we have the mural which depicts her as holding what I assume is Homeworld at her navel; then we have the most planets around WD’s mural, a more or less equal number in YD and BD’s murals, and one in PD’s mural:

(Image from here)

Thus it’s fairly certain that White Diamond is the OG, or OD if you will. She came first.

So if she’s such a big deal, why is it that we don’t hear her name dropped, don’t see anyone reference her, not even BD and YD or even Peridot in the moon base–where is she? We see her depicted everywhere, she has a HUGE statue/effigy on Homeworld…so what’s she up to?

Which got me to thinking, maybe she is the planet itself.

It’s Not Gay When It’s in a Threeway

Richie and Eddie are best friends. Best friends share everything, right? So what’s Eddie to do when Richie pulls him aside to share some intimacy?

A/N: So yes this is based off the Lonely Island song and this is probably one of the stupidest things I’ll ever post.

Requested: LOL nooope

Word Count: 2,070

Warnings: Aged Up Character, Underage Drinking and  Implied Sexual Content (if you wanna believe teenagers aren’t having sex that’s on you)

Eddie had spent all seventeen years of his life not attending a party. Not even so much as a birthday party so he’s overwhelmed pushing through the crowd.

He wasn’t even invited, none of the Losers were. Mike, who could hardly be considered a loser anymore, and his popularity sky rocketed when he joined the football team sophomore year. Earlier that week he was invited to a “small get together” by one of his teammates and Mike extended the invitation to the rest of them. Eddie and Stan were reluctant, but Bill persuaded that it’d be fun with them all together and that’d he make sure nothing happened to them. Richie then draped an arm around Eddie’s shoulder, cooing to Eddie that he wouldn’t let anyone lay a finger on his “Eddie-bear”.

Eddie shoved Richie off, ducking down and pretending to fix his shoes to hide his blushing face. Now Eddie squeezed between the end of the loveseat and a couple feverishly making out. Fuck know’s where Bill and Stan were, Mike was joking with some of his teammates and Ben and Bev were talking intimately in the corner. Eddie’s eyes combed until his eyes landed on Richie, who’s back was against the wall and smiling seductively as some girl grinded her backside against him.

Eddie was silently playing a game in his head. A sad pathetic game called “Drink Every time Richie Flirts With Some Girl”. Of course he hadn’t planned on drinking, but it was easier than being sober. There were few things Eddie would take to the grave with him. The showdown with It., the fact that some times his mother bathes him to assure there’s no weird marks or bumps on his body. And the fact that he was in love with Richie Tozier. Part of him always knew, but when Richie lost his glasses and shot up to 6’0 and grew his hair out into thick black curls and every girl eyed him up and down he knew for sure. Of all the fucking people on the planet, hell even in this town. It had to be him.

Him. Who was making his way to Eddie, but he wasn’t alone.

The girl he quickly recognized as Sheila O’ Connor held Richie’s hand, a red Solo cup occupying her other hand, and escorted him through the crowd. Richie’s eyes met his and Richie’s winked, making Eddie’s heart drop. Even in a crowd of people, even in another girl’s arms, he still made Eddie feel like he was the only one in the room. Eddie wanted desperately for Richie and Sheila to get separated or for her to throw up all her drinks, or trip tipsy or anything. Anything to stop them from heading upstairs. Eddie’d never been to a party, but he’s seen movies and knew what happened when couples went upstairs.

No amount of cuts or broken arms can compare to watching Richie disappear up those steps.

Eddie squeezed his eyes shut, fighting his moistening eyes and tight chest. Quickly he downed his drink and shot up from the couch, making his way to the kitchen. He made a concoction that was 1 part juice and eight parts liquor. It burned his throat and could feel fighting it’s way back up, but he was stronger. Eddie took another gulp, his whole body and face flushed.

“Hey Eddie! Where ya been man?” Mike asked, coming up and wrapping an arm around Eddie’s shoulders.

“Partying what’s it look like?” Eddie slurred, looking up at Mike. The taller boy smiled, surprised.

“Really? I didn’t think this place was really your scene. I was coming to ask if you were okay. If you wanted to go or something.”

“No no no I’m totally fine. A-okay. I got all I need right here.” Eddie said, holding up his cup.

“Okay, but take it easy man. If you come home too fucked, you’re mom’s gonna make you spend the rest of senior year in the hospital.”

“Mhm. ‘M staying over at Richie’s.” Eddie started. “Speaking of fucked.” he added bitterly.

“Richie’s getting some?! No shit!”

“Would you two hens stop clucking? Especially behind your ol’ pal’s back.”

The two of them turned to see Richie walking towards them. Eddie fought to snap at him, too busy combing his eyes over Richie’s figure. His hair was disheveled and his lips were swollen, but other than that he looked no different than he went upstairs.

“Hey I was about to congratulate ya! Who’s the unlucky lady?” Mike said, elbowing Richie in the ribs.

“Ah ah ah a gentleman never kisses and tells. Shouldn’t you be with your buds talking about balls?” Richie said with no real heat behind the remark.

“Ha ha.” Mike said, making a face before leaving the two alone.

Mike’s arm was replaced with Richie’s and suddenly Eddie was following him.

“Walk with me Eds.”

“How many times have I told you to not to call me that asshole?” Eddie argued, trying to actually sound mad.

“You shouldn’t talk to me like that Eds. Especially after you see the surprise I have for you.” Richie purred in Eddie’s ear.

Eddie’s knees bucked at Richie’s tone, but could be easily misconstrued as stumbling tipsily.

“W-what surprise?” Eddie asked as Richie took the position of Sheila O’ Connor, holding his hand and turning to approach the steps.

“Oh Eds must we do this. What’s the point of a surprise if I tell you?”

Eddie’s heart hammered in his chest and he stared into Richie jean clad ass as they made their way up the stairs. A million thoughts ran through Eddie’s mind and yet he felt like wasn’t thinking at all. Richie lead him down the hall to the last room on the right.

“Richie-“ Eddie started, but stopped at the sight inside.

Sheila O’ Connor, nude except a lacy black thong, laying on the bed. She sat up and she smiled widely, her cheeks and chest flushed from alcohol.

“Is this him?” she asked, crawling forward on the bed.

“Mhmm. This is ol’ Eds.” Richie said, moving forward and sliding behind Sheila on the bed.

“He is cute! You didn’t tell me he was that cute!” Sheila said, giggling.

“Oh yes I did Sheila. Ain’t he the cutest?” Richie asked, wrapping his arms around Sheila’s waist and kissing at the back of her neck.

“Ooh yes definitely! Whatcha waiting for cutie?” Sheila asked, leaning back into Richie embrace as he now groped at her.

“W-what’s happening here?” Eddie asked, still in shock.

“I asked Sheila if it was okay if you joined. She wanted to see what you look like though. What you think Eds? Still want to party?” Richie finished huskily as Sheila half climbed on top of his, nipping at his neck.

Eddie’s eyes were still wide, in shock at what was happening and be propositioned. Richie and Sheila were now making out heavily, breaking so Richie’s shirt could be removed. Richie’s torso was thin, pale, but beautiful. Especially contrasting with his flushed cheeks as Sheila started to rub him below his belt.

“You got lead in your shoes Eds? Come here.” Richie said as he tore his lips from Sheila’s

The sight of Richie aroused made Eddie’s stomach flip and his shorts tighten. Slowly, he walked forward and closed the door behind him. As Sheila unbuckled Richie’s belt, Eddie locked the door. Eddie bit his lip, the realization hitting him. He was about to lose his virginity, about to have his first kiss. Sheila climbed off Richie’s lap and sauntered over to Eddie. Her lips were on his and it wasn’t bad. Eddie wasn’t sure what to do with his hands, but when she licked at his lower lip he knew to open his mouth. Sheila grabbed one of his hands and placed it on her chest. Eddie mimicked Richie’s movements and gave it a squeeze, causing her to moan into his mouth.

Eddie nearly jumped ten feet in the air when he felt a pair of lips on the back of his shoulder. He broke the kiss and looked over to see Richie’s chest. Looking up, his heart flipped at the sight. Richie stood over him, his dark eyes aroused yet soft and hesitant. “Is this okay?” Richie breathed, placing his hands on Eddie’s hips.

Fuck yes

Richie smirked widely and as Eddie realized he said that out loud, Riche’s lips were on his. It made Eddie’s stomach do somersaults and his head dizzy and like he was inches off the ground. Richie deepened the kiss and Sheila attacked his neck. Together they led Eddie to the bed and clothes were stripped, hands roaming as pants filled the air. At first it was odd to Eddie, the feeling going back to feeling weird to amazing. Kisses were swapped, one awkward and different to sensual and amazing. Soon it all felt beautiful and like he ascended to heaven right there in that bedroom. The way he was handled like china, but whispered to with an animalistic roughness. It was the best Eddie felt in his life. Sometime in the night he drifted off softly.

Birds chirped pleasantly outside and Eddie wanted nothing more to chuck the nearest object at them. The moment he opened his eyes it was like someone took a sledgehammer to his temple. He groaned, squeezing his eyes shut.

“Way to make a girl feel special.”

Eddie’s eyes flew open and he turned his side at lightning speed to see Richie Tozier’s beautiful face inches from him.

“Holy shit.” Eddie breathed.

“That’s more like it.” Richie said with a smirk.

“Richie… last night…” Eddie trailed off.

Looking at Richie, his dark eyes wide and smiling, with his pouty lips puffed and practically glowing in the sunlight made Eddie throw caution to the wind.

Richie beamed at him, biting his lower lip. “Do you even remember any of it?” Richie asked, suddenly worried.

“Kind of… it was kind of weird, but then really nice.” Eddie finished bashfully. “Where’s Sheila?” Eddie asked.

“Down there.” Richie nodded to the other side of the bed.

Eddie looked over before sitting up and see a passed out Sheila on the bedroom floor, still wearing her underwear from the night before. Eddie froze.

“How long has she been like that?”

“Since sometime last night.” Richie said softly.

“When last night?” Eddie pressed, only for Richie to not answer.

Eddie looked back and Richie, who was avoiding his eyes. “It was me. Who made you… feel like that. Sheila was trying with you, but you kept blowing her off. For me.” Richie finished, risking looking up at Eddie.

“Oh.” was all Eddie said.

Richie squirmed as Eddie laid back down, dying for Eddie to say something.

“I think… I think-“

“Me too.” Richie cut off.

Eddie looked up at him. “Really? Richie you better not be fucking with me.”

“Well I mean Sheila’s hot and all, but I think you’re cute and fuck Eddie last night was incredible. Maybe I like both, but I really like you. Like ever since middle school.

Eddie’s eyes widened and he was sure he was dreaming, but his stomach flipped and he knew it all was real. Richie let out a sigh of relief as Eddie beamed at him. “Can… I kiss you?” Eddie asked shyly.

Richie laughed. “After last night you think you have to ask?”

Eddie laughed along, biting his lower lip before leaning up until their lips met. It was gentle, but just as nearly as incredible as last night. The two broke apart for air eventually.

“I don’t regret anything about last night, but I think my own breathing is giving me a headache and I’m never drinking again.” Eddie said and Richie barked out a laugh, causing Eddie to cringe.

“Even after deflowered, still so cute! Let’s go get some breakfast.” Richie ruffled Eddie’s hair, before climbing out of bed.

After dressing, the two help wrap Sheila in a blanket and laid her on the bed. Together the two walked hand in hand down the stairs, only to jump and the sound of the Loser’s loud applause.

“Aw yeah!” Mike yelled.

“Hot damn!” Bev exclaimed.

“To be a fly on that wall!” Bill said with a smirk.

“Keep it up and you fuckers can walk home!” Richie said, trying to fight a smile before they all left to Richie’s car.

anonymous asked:

Do you have "favorite clients" or clients you look forward to seeing or prefer seeing over others? Obviously you would never say this to the client but how do you prevent that from effecting your work with said client?

This has been in my ask box for while because I’ve really been thinking about how to answer. It’s complicated for me because I know I have a lot of therapists and student therapists following me for whom this question is really valuable but that “being your therapist’s favorite” is a thing for a portion of clients so I really had to think about whether or not to answer. But I think the value outweighs the risk. And you are right - telling a client that they are one of your favorites or they aren’t would not be beneficial to the client and it’s not something I’ve ever done or would do.

The standard answer is along the lines of “Of course not, I enjoy aspects of all of my clients.” Kinda like how parents aren’t supposed to have favorite kid. This is totally true but it’s not the whole story. There are clients that, for whatever reason, I really enjoy working with. Our personalities mesh really well or I find something about their case really interesting - or a thousand things. And I do look forward to working these clients. I think a lot of therapists have favorites. But admitting that can sometimes be hard because all the clients we work with have value and are interesting/engaging in their own way. But If I’m honest, really honest, with myself - there are absolutely clients I’m looking at my schedule like, “Client A? Aw yes!”

These feeling also change - I’ve noticed for me personally, if I’m struggling connecting with or liking a client, I need to give it a couple of months.  Because some folks who have ended up being favorites were clients I struggled with at the start of treatment. Sometimes for a year! And I know that many therapists who set the appointments (like in community mental health) and have a lot of flexibility will gear their schedules so a good balance is maintained. Some people find having their most difficult cases in the morning on the first day of their weeks the best and other would feel like that would be horrible for them. This is also countertransference (because it’s feelings you the therapist are having about them the client) and you have to manage it just as much any other feeling.

I find that people I’ve worked with have had a harder time managing positive countertransference (as opposed to negative). I’ve noticed it too. I’m talking about myself here and therapists I know personally - not every therapist on the planet will feel this way. I can’t speak for your therapist and I don’t have research at my disposal around this (academic paywalls hurt my soul). When I really am digging working with a client, I talk about it with a supervisor, a mentor or a colleague because I want to ensure that I am still providing good therapy. With clients I really like, I know I need to watch my perspective. A lot of my value as a therapist comes from not being in the everyday with client - I have some distance and that gives me the opportunity to see the forest through the trees. That perspective is critical. When you really like a client, you are at a risk for losing some of that perspective. You also may find yourself doing things for that client that you normally don’t do (again not talking ethical breeches which are a whole nother story) - letting sessions run a few minutes over, agreeing to things (like communication between sessions) without thinking them totally through, etc.

Also the impulse for increase self disclosure that needs to be watched. I’m going to give you a very broad example. I had a client who had a similar background to mine and similar responses - identification/over identification with a client needs to be watched in general, even if it’s just in your head. I loved working this client and I ended up spending some time in supervision looking at why I wanted to disclose more about my background to her, what purpose that would serve and if it was actually clinically helpful. My supervisor and I decided that I should hold off and see where the client was going with the subject. I’m super glad I talked to my supervisor because a couple of weeks after my impulse to talk to the client, they ended up sharing more about the situation and feeling that were very different than mine. In that moment with the client, I was so relieved I hadn’t self-disclosed outside of some very broad questions from the client. Why? Because the client could just have their own reaction and space and not have that competing with my own narrative. I can’t know for certain that it would have made a negative impact but that’s what my gut told me in the room.

You Only Live Twice by Amethystina
Anonymous: Imagine that Tony was there during WW2 instead of Howard, and somehow (extremis??) he’s lived through until the 21st century thinking that Bucky was dead and then lo and behold Cap2 happens and Tony rescues Bucky and he has to be Bucky and Steve’s guide into the new world
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5

Tony Stark Is Not A Mother Hen (Unless He Is) by Potrix
Tony doesn’t mind being Bucky’s crutch, he absolutely doesn’t, but it makes him wonder sometimes, how healthy their behaviour and constantly growing co-dependency really is. Because he wants more for Bucky, so much more.

Walls of Jericho by antigrav_vector
After the events of CATWS, Tony discovers something in the leaked SHIELD data that catches everyone’s attention. A list of HYDRA research bases. When the team starts taking them out, however, things go sideways in ways they didn’t expect. Director Fury pulls his support, the HYDRA bases are not what they seem, and a certain ghost is testing the edges of their mission parameters… And through it all, Tony can’t seem to help but dig until he gets to the bottom of things.

In Silence We Speak by Akira_of_the_Twilight
After having his life threatened numerous times; the fate of the planet resting on his shoulders just as many times; and living with deadly assassins, enhanced super humans, and Norse gods, it took a lot to truly scare Tony. Which was why Tony glared at Bucky Barnes—the Winter Soldier, the man who had been a ghost story for decades and could probably mess up Tony worse than Natasha if the man was having one of his off days. All of that didn’t matter though, because the asshole was blocking Tony from his coffee.

Hopeless Wanderer by JensenAckles13
James Buchanan Barnes died when he fell from that train in the mountains; not in the literal sense, but very much in the figurative. He’d been molded into the Winter Soldier, the perfect assassin, by Hydra. But Bucky? He was still very much alive, trapped in his new Winter Soldier body, watching as this new him kills and hurts and demolishes. He doesn’t know what he would call himself- a ghost, maybe, a spirit. A soul? This goes on for seventy years, until one Tony Stark comes along and completely fucks up the life he’s trapped in. He watched the man struggle and hurt, seen him at his best and at his worst and somewhere along the way, Bucky fell in love with the self-made genius.
And then.
Then Tony almost dies, and suddenly, he can see Bucky- the ghost Bucky, who has been tied to him since he met him years ago, no longer stuck to the Winter Soldier.
Its been one helluva ride, and Bucky’s new goal?
Get his body back so he can kiss Tony senseless.
Easy, right?

Apartment Crasher by silver_drip
Tony’s just there to water his friend’s plants. He didn’t think he’d walk in on an assassin.

Whatever It Is by Averia
Bucky was not really caring about the insults, even though it should have hurt him. He knew Stark would fix it and that was really all that mattered. If it also meant that Stark would be propping his arm forever, then so be it.

If I promise to do better (will you maybe change your mind) by Captain_of_the_sass
Tony was a superhero. He’d built himself a heart out of scraps in a cave, he could totally handle five kids and a super-soldier who hated his guts. Or at least that’s what he kept telling himself.
AKA the one where the rest of the team is de-aged and Bucky and Tony are saddled with babysitting duty.

The Embarrassing Truth of Crushes by plirio
