when i live by the garden and the sea

in a better world I am the best bread baker in a small town by the ocean and I am humble and wake up early every morning to make fresh baguettes for the townsfolk and sell it alongside handmade preserves from the strawberries in my garden, I used to be the one and only apprentice to a master pot spinner who in their old age passed the wisdom of fine craftsmanship on to me when I was a young man and I eventually retired as well to live a less isolated lifestyle but still spin beautiful bowls and cups on quiet evenings to myself with my cat that sits on my windowsill and watches the sea birds. I wear one pair dark denim pants rolled up messily with clay and flour dusted over them from a hard days work.

The Domestic Garden Witch: I Sea What Ye Did There!

So maybe you’re a college witch with limited space and money, limited to the one window in your dorm. Or, maybe you’re a witch without extensive backyard space who wants to start up a magical garden. Perhaps you’re a kitchen witch who wants the freshest herbs right at her fingertips.

For many witches, having a garden seems to be a bit of a no-brainer. After all, plants and magic go hand-in-hand. Plus, when thinking of a witch, it’s hard not to think of a cottage in the woods with a little vegetable garden out front. Unfortunately for the majority of us, our cottage in the woods is a tiny flat, and our garden out front is a windowsill with limited space.

This is when it comes time to embrace your craftiness and bring your garden indoors! Not only does it place your garden in a convenient location, it also allows you to freshen the air, recycle what would otherwise harm the earth, and embrace your witchy green thumb!

Where The Garden Meets The Sea

This is a little garden idea that might not be accessible for everyone. However, I live very close to the ocean, and as the days begin to get longer and the weather warmer, the beach becomes more and more of a destination (yes, even when you live right there, you still wind up wanting to go down and sunbathe, swim, explore tide pools, and spend the rest of the day cleaning sand out of places you didn’t know you had). It makes sense, then, to look at sea shells as an option for incorporating into garden witchery.

Most often, I’ve seen seashells used as no more than decorative additions to gardens, carefully placed among flower beds and succulent gardens as accents, or incorporated into the container either by having been cemented or glued in. But very rarely do I ever see shells be used as the container for a plant.

Ideally, you may have to use small succulents for this project, as their shallow root systems and limited size allow them to grow with very little trouble, depending upon what shell you’re using. Take a reasonably sized seashell (conches like the one pictured above work, but here on California’s Central Coast, I feel abalone is much more appropriate) and check to see if it has any breathing holes (some species have holes in the shells to facilitate the movement of water into and out of the creature’s gills without having to be exposed to predators - this is particularly noticeable in abalone). If it does not, carefully drill small holes into the bottom of the shell to promote drainage.

Using a fine gravel (aquarium gravel works well), place a drainage layer into the shell before adding your potting mix and plants. Water them and make sure they get plenty of sunlight!

This is an excellent way of bringing a bit of both the sea and the garden into a dorm room, windowsill, or even into a well-lit bathroom!

How Can I Witch This?

Continuing with last week’s theme of focusing on the material of the container rather than the decorations that can be added to it, seashells are an exceptional addition to a practice if you have a bit of a connection with the element of water.

Seashells have long been used for various reasons ranging from divination tools to eating utensils to decorative and fashionable trinkets, and even as currency (as is the case with cowry and abalone).

When working with shells, consider the creature they come from, and how they may play a role in your practice. For instance, abalone (I know I mention it quite a bit, but it’s one of my favorites and is strongly linked to local history) is a form of sea snail that was often caught for food. Not only is it therefore linked with prosperity and health in addition to water, it is also linked to well-being and financial stability - both the meat and the shells were often traded between Native American tribes in the area. The inside of an abalone shell is lined with Mother of Pearl, a beautiful substance that can be linked with money, protection, and feminine beauty. All of these aspects come to play in the way that I use abalone shells in my practice, and this is a great example of how to approach using seashells in your work.

Try to use shells that correspond with the plants that you’re using to enhance those properties, and you could even treat the shells much like you would stones if you make multiple gardens, creating garden grids that further enhance the energies you’re trying to bring into your life!

Using a seashell as a gardening container is a potent symbol for life-giving energies. Though the earth is most often associated with motherhood, so too is water linked with life, and the sea nearly always connected with feminine qualities in some way or another. As such, a shell garden like this could make for a beautiful and potent charm for expectant mothers or couples who are trying to have a child. If you’re a male witch trying to get in touch with your femininity, this is a great form of spellwork for such a purpose, as well.

So next time you walk along the beach and find an abandoned shell, consider whether such a gift is meant for such a beautiful union with the earth!

May all your harvests be bountiful!
Blessed Be! )O(

Sorry if this is a bit of a weird question, but I think I read somewhere on your blog (when you were answering questions about your profession) you meditate? Could I ask how you do that? Meditate, I mean? Thanks, hope you have a great day!

Yes, I do. I’ve been doing that randomly whenever I have felt a need for it since I was 19, but recently I decided to start meditate daily for at least 15 minutes.

Meditating is super easy! Basically it just means calming down and shutting the whirling mass of thoughts for at least 15 minutes. It gets easier the longer you do it, like any other hobby or activity, so there’s really no need to feel like a failure or similar if you can’t stay calm for 15 minutes at the beginning.

Here’s easy way to do it.

1) Sit or lay down in a quiet place, where you won’t be disturbed. Turn off all notifications from mobile devices ect. so your meditation won’t get disturbed by any extra noise (trust me; if you are startled from a deep meditation, it physically HURTS.)

2) You can be in a silence or concentrate on listening something; ambient sounds, ASRM music, zen music, special meditative and relaxation music ect. Youtube is full of awesome tracks you can listen to. Concentrate on really listening what you are hearing.

3) Make yourself comfortable. I like to lay down as it relaxes the best. Remember to take calm, deep breaths at first. Deep breathing relaxes: for example one reason why smoking calms people down is that they take deep breaths in and breathe long breaths out while smoking.

4) Enjoy yourself! Your body might get numb or tingling; that’s normal. You might have sudden emotional outbursts or feelings; that’s normal, too (means you are relaxing, letting go of resistance and it opens up emotional valves).

5) Stop as soon as you start to feel exhausted or tired. Try some other time again. Meditation is supposed to be calm and relaxing.

6) Meditate either at the beginning of the day or before going to bed. You can meditate as often during a day as you want to.

7) Meditate 15 minutes daily at least for 2 weeks to see the effects in you the best. You can meditate more than that, if you want and if the meditation flows nicely. Sometimes I think 15 minutes has passed just to see it’s been 60 minutes! Time really flies when you get in the meditative zone.

Other things:

If you fall asleep during meditation, that’s completely fine!

It’s completely normal that some days you stay easily in meditation and some days it’s harder. Just like you have days when your hobbies or activities just flow and turn out nice, and then you have days when it just doesn’t work.

If you mind wanders, don’t worry; correct it back to listening again. In meditation focusing is the work you do.

If your imagination starts to put you into a nice place, like on a Caribbean sea shore or into your dream house’s bedroom, let it do so. You can imagine yourself freely to any relaxing place. When I meditate I often end up in my imagination to the place from the ambient sounds I’m listening (in a car during a rain, in pirate captain’s cozy cabin, into a garden, into a small creek with clear water ect.) - or to some other place like into my dream house’s living room!

If you feel like you can’t do meditation alone, search for guided meditation audios from Youtube. Sometimes it’s A LOT easier to relax and let go when you have to concentrate on listening someone’s instructions.

Hi Sea, I was wondering if you could walk me through how Olivia is a type of word play or british slang? I was reading through a few posts here and didn't quite get it. Thanks in advance! :)

When Olivia was released, Harry made a point of saying that Olivia wasn’t necessarily a person. It could be a place, or a feeling.“ (Hopefully you’ve seen that video snippet from MITAM promo).

If not, here:

The thing is, Harry and Louis have a history with olives. At least in tweets.

Here’s a great summary from @bulletproofhalo

Another great summary post with Ed’s tweets:

The bond over olives… hmmm.

The tweets suggest that olives are a stand-in for love/ affection, given the homonymous (sounding the same) pun: “Olivia” and “I love ya.”

As if to clarify the point, Harry eventually writes a Harry-gives-no-fucks song with lyrics that accentuate the pun. (Remember the boys said that there’s significance in which singer they choose to sing certain lines?)

(Source: https://www.genius.com/amp/One-direction-olivia-lyrics)

[Chorus: Harry]
I live for you, I long for you, Olivia
I’ve been idolising the light in your eyes, Olivia
I live for you, I long for you, Olivia
Don’t let me go, don’t let me go

[Bridge: Harry]
When you go and I’m alone
You live in my imagination
The summertime and butterflies
All belong to your creation
I love you, it’s all I do, I love you

You know what the “summertime and butterflies” evoke?

• Sweet creature
We’re running through the garden
Where nothing bothered us

And “idolising the light in your eyes”

• Same eyes blue

“I love you, I love you,
I love I love I love

It’s a punny love song.

Since it’s Valentine’s Day next Tuesday, Fifi thought she could sort Nick’s love life out by then. She found a dating app for famous people so he could find his ‘fellow famos’ on there. And she’s done some searching and found a couple of guys who she though Nick could get into. Here they are presented by Fiona (with Nick’s reactions):

Candidate no. 1 - they like dogs (I love dogs), they like travelling (I love travelling), they’re Swedish, 27 years old, Virgo (I do like a Virgo! Everyone I’m friends with is either a Leo or a Virgo), 5′9″ tall (Oh, no no. What do they do for work?), a producer and a DJ (That could work). | It was Avicii (Do you know how much money has he got?) He’s worth $54 million (Well, that’s a Yes from me! I mean I’d rather go out with Avicii and have a boat, than not go out with Avicii and not have a boat. Not saying that money makes you happy but it’d be alright for like 5 or 10 years)

Candidate no. 2 - they’re American, blue eyes (Looove blue eyes), their favourite food is curry (*gasp*), brown hair, a DJ (Perfect), 5′10″ tall (OK, that’s an inch bigger than Avicii), How tall are you by the way? (6′1″1/4. That ¼ is important!), Scorpio (I do like a Scorpio, bit argumentative though), shoe size 8 (That seems out of balance! They gonna fall over). | It was Diplo (OMG YES! I wanna go out with Diplo! We’re a perfect match and we’re gonna get married.)

Candidate no. 3 - they were in the navy for 2 years (Now that’s good, cause that’s good stories, they’ve seen the world, they’ve lived life on the sea, they’ve got homemade tattoos probably), they were a landscaper at one point (Perfect. They can do my garden), vegan (It might be slightly annoying when you go out for dinner, because they’ll be like ‘I can’t go there. I’m a vegan, but they’re also healthy), Leo (I’m a Leo! This could work), their favourite ice cream is banana peanut butter and chocolate (That sound delicious. This one sounds like the dream man. Likes ice cream, he’s a Leo, a vegan, a landscape gardener, was in the navy. I don’t think we need to go any further. Out of those three, that’s the one that I’ll say Yes, I’ll go on a date with). | It was Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit (LMAO! OK then, Valentine’s Day sorted!)

*Then he downloaded the app, and got annoyed within like five seconds cause it wouldn’t work

Jack Gilinsky - Comfort zone (based on Paper Towns)

Request: Can you do a paper towns inspired imagine for jack gilinsky?

Okay, I had been working on this all afternoon, evening and half of the night, I don’t know if it turned out to be okay and like the requester imagined but I tried my best.

The way I figure it, everyone gets a miracle. Like, I will probably never get struck by lightning, or win Nobel Prize, or become the dictator of a small nation in the Pacific Islands, or contract terminal ear cancer, or spontaneously combust. But if you consider all the unlikely things together, at least one of them will probably happen to each of us. I could have seen it rain frogs. I could have stepped foot on Mars. I could have been eaten by a whale. I could have married the queen of England or survived months at sea. But my miracle was different. My miracle was this: out of all the houses in Omaha, I ended up living next door to Jack Gilinsky.

This all started when I was nine, and one day that big van appeared in front of the house next to ours. Then another car pulled over and there he was with all of his 55 inches. I was playing in the garden with my dog as he laid his eyes on me, gave me a bright smile and then ran into their new home.

Mostly because we were close in age we started to hang out and another neighbor kid, Johnson joined our little squad. We used to play until late night and Gilinsky quite often ended up in my window asking me to sneak out, but I was too much of a chicken to do it. He then always just shrugged and went on the adventure by himself.

The years passed by and puberty hit us. I started to hang out with girls and him and Johnson focused on their project. They uploaded short videos to the app called Vine and created a YouTube channel. People liked what they were doing and soon they became part of the Magcon tour. We weren’t talking anymore, they were the famous and popular guys that everyone wanted to be around, while I was just an average girl trying to get through high school. But I was kept dreaming of the day when he finally remembers that I existed and realizes how cool of a girl I was. I sat in my room in the night watching their videos and glancing outside the window waiting for him to appear, however I knew he was always on the road, so there wasn’t too many chances I would see him. It was until one night, when he mysteriously appeared in my room.

I was sleeping peacefully, when I was woken up by a strange noise. I sat up in my room and saw a shadow move from my window to my bed. I was scared to death and was literally thinking I would die in that moment. Then the shadow too his hoodie down and I recognized Jack.

“What the hell?” I groaned trying to calm myself down.

“I need your car,” he explained.

“I don’t have a car,” I said quietly, because it was a touchy subject for me.

“Well, then I need your mom’s car.”

“Jack, should I remind you, that you have your own car?” I asked raising my eyebrows at him.

“My parents took my keys, so I’m in a desperate need of yours.” He took a look at my desk before sitting down to the edge of my bed.

“What do you need a car for in the middle of the night?” I asked realizing I was in my pink pajamas, so I tried to pull the covers up a bit without him noticing my outfit.

“I have a problem to take care of,” he answered diplomatically.

“Can’t just your girlfriend give you her car? I’m sure she has a better one than my mom.” Touchy subject number two. I wasn’t quite happy when I saw the news online that Jack got together with Madison Beer. Actually, I had a typical teenage breakdown, when I sat in my room for an entire day, watched awful romantic movies and ate half a gallon icecream. I’m not proud of that, I have to admit it.

“Ex-girlfriend. And no, because she is a big part of my problem.”

What can you say to this? Probably I stared at him with a weird expression before I managed to speak up.

“Okay, let’s go.”

He exited through the window while I quickly got changed and got the keys to the car. If I was badass enough I would have gone back and followed him through the window, but I chose the front door. He was waiting outside for me, we got into the car and made our way to…

“Where are we going exactly?”

“First we need to have a round in Wal-Mart and then our destination is going to be Hilton Garden Inn,” he answered checking something out on his phone and then giving me a mysterious smile. From what he said I figured out that Madison may had been in Hilton Garden Inn, but I hadn’t knew why she was part of the problem exactly, but I chose to save this question for later.

Jack was the first to talk in the car.

“Have you ever felt utterly betrayed?” he asked looking out to the street.

“Who made you feel like that?” Turning towards me he shifted his gaze to my face waiting for my answer. I wanted to say ‘you’ but I didn’t want him to know how deeply I was affected by him.

“You don’t know him,” I shrugged. “Do you feel betrayed now?”

“More than ever.”

“Will you tell me why?”

“I could, but I guess it will be funnier if you just see it yourself.” He showed me exactly the same smile I got when we first saw each other and it totally distracted me from the topic.

I was used to trips to Wal-Mart with my mom, where we bought usual things. Now with Jack, we also bought usual things, but in that context it occurred to be weird. Coke, Veet, Vaseline, two bags of chips, and a can of blue spray paint.

“This isn’t as weird as it looks,” I told the check-out woman, but she just cleared her throat and said:

“Still weird,” she muttered.

“Jack, I really don’t want to get into trouble,” I said as we were heading to Hilton Garden Inn.

“Don’t be afraid, if we get busted, I take the blame, since you are just the very pretty assistant here.”

“You still don’t want to tell me what happened?” I asked while the word ‘pretty’ was echoing in my mind.

“If I’m not mistaken, you will see it yourself within twenty minutes.”

After finding a spot at the parking lot in front of Hilton Garden Inn, we just walked inside with the bag full of our weird stuff. He walked straight to the reception. A beautiful blonde girl was standing behind the counter, her smile immediately grew wide as he saw Jack.

“Good evening, Mr. Gilinsky. How can I help you?” she asked clearly flirting with him. And I was just standing there awkwardly, feeling useless in that situation.

“Hello, I would like to have another card to my room. Unfortunately I lost it today on my rehearsals.” It was impressing how believable he could lie.

The girl looked at him for a moment before turning around and getting another card.

“Thank you. Just add the lost one to the bill,” he winked and then turning around stepped back to me. “Come on, we have to get started.”

Taking the elevator we went up to the tenth floor. Seemingly Jack knew where we had to go, and walking through the hallway he stopped at room 1023 and turned to me.

“Okay. We are going in, but we have to be quiet. Your task is going to be to put Vaseline to the doorknobs, but only in the insides, okay? I will take care of everything else.” I nodded and took out the Vaseline from the bag handing everything else to him. “Alright. When I say ‘run,’ you have to run and not look back, okay? Just go to the car, ignite and go, I will be right behind you.” I nodded again. He took out the card from his pocket and quietly opened the door.

It was dark inside, but as soon as I got used to it, I could see two figures lying in the bed. Walking closer I saw that it was Madison with an unknown guy… they both were naked. I was shocked, but looking over to Jack I didn’t see any sight of surprise on his face. I shook my head and started to do my task. When I was done, I went to check out what Jack was doing. By that time a huge letter G was spray painted to the wall and he was doing… something on the sleeping cheaters. Stepping closer I could see that he was spreading Veet to Madison’s eyebrows, and the guy was already eyebrowless. I saw him take off the cream and abracadabra, her eyebrows were gone.

“Oh my God,” I gasped trying to hold back my laughter. Jack was grinning too, but he made a mistake, the cream spilled to her face waking her up.

“Run!” Jack whispered immediately as Madison sat up and realized what was happening. I did as he told me, we ran through the hallway, down the stairs and out of the hotel. “Go! Go!” he shouted laughing, my heart was beating madly as I quickly ignited and left the parking lot.

“Oh my God! I can’t believe what just happened!” I screamed when we were far away from the hotel.

“See? I just gave you the biggest adventure of your life!” he laughed happily. When our laughter faded I finally realized that we just busted his girlfriend with another guy.

“Jack, how did you know what was happening there?” I quietly asked glancing over to him for a moment.

“Johnson heard her talk with this dude and then it was easy to get the picture together.”

“I’m really sorry.”

“Thank you, but I’m just happy I could take my revenge.”

We drove back home in silence, I thought he would need some time to take everything in, I didn’t force him into useless talking. When we arrived I parked the car down and we got out meeting at the front.

“Thank you for helping me,” he said giving me that smile once again.

“You’re welcome. I have to admit I had fun.”

“Because you got out of your comfort zone. You should do it more often.

“I don’t think so,” I giggled shaking my head. “It’s too complicated and dangerous and…” I couldn’t finish my sentence, because I was cut off by his lips on my lips.

I had been dreaming of it since I knew what kissing meant and now it was happening. But it ended as fast as it started. He pulled away before I even could realize what was happening.

“Out of your comfort zone. The fun is there,” he said and then just turned around, walked inside their house, like this night didn’t happen. But I knew I would remember to it as long as I live.

If I Have a Daughter

If I have a daughter

Let her be dumb

Let her eyes wander in class

Let her brain be absorbed in trivial things

Things that make life ridiculously lovable

When a test is placed on her desk

Let her heart continue to beat properly

Let her mind be at peace

Let her pencil move freely without concern

Without even a fleeting worry of failure

When her grades are sent to me

I will rejoice in B’s and be content with C’s

And I will enjoy a sublime moment of triumph

Knowing that my daughter is smart enough to enjoy life

Smart enough to live life

I want my daughter to breathe the thrilling air of life

Not suffocate in the dense fog of perfectionism

I want my daughter to bloom in the garden of society

Not wither in the pit of forced isolation

I want her to be joyously out of breath, exhilarated by activity

Not struggling to find air, immersed in a sea of expectations

And when she comes home after curfew drunk and happily out of sorts

I will pride myself on having a wonderfully normal daughter

I will pride myself on raising her to have an affinity for life

An affinity for thrill

An affinity for living a profoundly average existence

Lilith was the first wife of Adam and created in the same dirt, but left Eden when he tried to dominate her. She traveled to the Red Sea to give birth to monsters and demons in the hundreds by the day, until Adam asks god to intervene. Three angels were sent and told her tor return to Adam, but she didn't and was punished. The parallels to Rize seem to be there, standing in red water outside of a garden she lived in. Her "children" the monsters that Kanou created. Furuta likes to dominate?

This is such a great reference, and I agree! I wonder if Rize and Furuta were supposed to “breed”, but Rize didn’t want to live that kind of life, and ran away from the Garden. I’m a bit busy because of school, but I wonder if some of the monsters and demons that Lilith gave birth had any significant roles that would parallel what Rize’s “successful” children, Kaneki, Furuta, and Kurona, have done.

That makes me realize though, that Furuta would one of her children even though he was “Adam”…

Yet when we came back, from the hyacinth garden,
Yours arms full, and your hair wet, I could not
Speak, and my eyes failed, I was neither
Living nor dead, and I knew nothing.
Looking into the heart of light, the silence.
Oed und leer das Meer (‘waste and empty in the sea’)“
"I remember
Those are pearls that were his eyes.”
“Who is the third who walks always beside you?
When I count, there are only you and I together
But when I look ahead, up the white road
There is always another one walking beside you,
Gliding wrapt in a brown mantle, hooded
I do not know whether a man or a woman
But who is that on the other side of you?
—  T.S. Eliot, The Waste Land

After enduring a week in the fog of uncertainty and certainty l was led to this particular corner of hope inside a book entitled ‘Change Your Thoughts Change Your Life’ by the late Dr. Wayne Dyer in which he treats the entire 81 verses of Lao Tzu’s 'Tao Te Ching’.

I felt to open to the 72nd verse this morning. It was entitled 'Living with Awe and Acceptance’. I appreciate this more now because l have just come through a tunnel encased in a dense fog. It’s been an experience that l can only partly articulate.

I am moved to “See the miraculous in everything as l focus on loving the life l have now in the body l have got.” The turning of the earth on its axis awesome me. The way the sea stays low awes me. The tree in my backyard awes me. The way of the foxes in my garden at night awes me. The tears falling from my eyes awes me. The reasons why l still breathe and move even when l am in the fog awes me.

Through this all, l have chosen to be grateful even though, l can’t explain anything. I choose to live in a space of gratitude. I will not take anything for granted. There is awe in the most unlikely places and people.

I internalised far too much. I thought too much of myself as what l wanted and neglected my intentions. I was insular. I felt the Universe taking me on a journey of grander things of which l was one.

I am part of the 10,000 things. I am loved. My destiny is unique. My body is mine. I am thankful for it. I am the perfect age now. I am here on purpose.

Life after a kind of death is sweeter.

I accept my Self. I surrender to my highest Self. I am a miracle. And this is true!

Two of the lines in the 72nd verse says, “ Do not limit the view of yourself./Do not resist the natural course of your life.”

I learnt this by allowing and cooperating with Life instead of trying to change the impossible. I am grateful for this revelation. I accept God’s Will for my life. It’s perfect happiness for me.

I send oceans of Awe and Acceptance into the lives of those who read this blog and all the others. When you decide something awesome will burst within you more than you think.
