Internal Conflict:  Five Conflicting Traits of a Likable Hero.

1.  Flaws and Virtues

I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but characters without flaws are boring.  This does not, as many unfortunate souls take it to mean, imply that good, kind, or benevolent characters are boring:  it just means that without any weaknesses for you to poke at, they tend to be bland-faced wish fulfillment on the part of the author, with a tendency to just sit there without contributing much to the plot.

For any character to be successful, they need to have a proportionate amount of flaws and virtues.

Let’s take a look at Stranger Things, for example, which is practically a smorgasbord of flawed, lovable sweethearts.

We have Joyce Byers, who is strung out and unstable, yet tirelessly works to save her son, even when all conventional logic says he’s dead;  We have Officer Hopper, who is drunken and occasionally callous, yet ultimately is responsible for saving the boy’s life;  We have Jonathan, who is introspective and loving, but occasionally a bit of a creeper, and Nancy, who is outwardly shallow but proves herself to be a strong and determined character.  Even Steve, who would conventionally be the popular jerk who gets his comeuppance, isn’t beyond redemption.

And of course, we have my beloved Eleven, who’s possibly the closest thing Stranger Things has to a “quintessential” heroine.  She’s the show’s most powerful character, as well as one of the most courageous.  However, she is also the show’s largest source of conflict, as it was her powers that released the Demogorgon to begin with.

Would Eleven be a better character if this had never happened?  Would Stranger Things be a better show?  No, because if this had never happened, Stranger Things wouldn’t even be a show.  Or if it was, it would just be about a bunch of cute kids sitting around and playing Dungeons and Dragons in a relatively peaceful town.

A character’s flaws and mistakes are intended to drive the plotline, and if they didn’t have them, there probably wouldn’t even be a plot.

So don’t be a mouth-breather:  give your good, kind characters some difficult qualities, and give your villains a few sympathetic ones.  Your work will thank you for it.

2.  Charisma and Vulnerability

Supernatural has its flaws, but likable leads are not one of them.  Fans will go to the grave defending their favorite character, consuming and producing more character-driven, fan-created content than most other TV shows’ followings put together.

So how do we inspire this kind of devotion with our own characters?  Well, for starters, let’s take a look at one of Supernatural’s most quintessentially well-liked characters:  Dean Winchester.

From the get-go, we see that Dean has charisma:  he’s confident, cocky, attractive, and skilled at what he does.  But these qualities could just as easily make him annoying and obnoxious if they weren’t counterbalanced with an equal dose of emotional vulnerability.

As the show progresses, we see that Dean cares deeply about the people around him, particularly his younger brother, to the point of sacrificing himself so that he can live.  He goes through long periods of physical and psychological anguish for his benefit (though by all means, don’t feel obligated to send your main character to Hell for forty years), and the aftermath is depicted in painful detail.

Moreover, in spite of his outward bravado, we learn he doesn’t particularly like himself, doesn’t consider himself worthy of happiness or a fulfilling life, and of course, we have the Single Man Tear™.

So yeah, make your characters beautiful, cocky, sex gods.  Give them swagger.  Just, y’know.  Hurt them in equal measure.  Torture them.  Give them insecurities.  Make them cry.

Just whatever you do, let them be openly bisexual.  Subtext is so last season.

3.  Goals For the Future and Regrets From the Past

Let’s take a look at Shadow Moon from American Gods.  (For now, I’ll have to be relegate myself to examples from the book, because I haven’t had the chance to watch the amazing looking TV show.)

Right off the bat, we learn that Shadow has done three years in prison for a crime he may or may not have actually committed.  (We learn later that he actually did commit the crime, but that it was only in response to being wronged by the true perpetrators.)

He’s still suffering the consequences of his actions when we meet him, and arguably, for the most of the book:  because he’s in prison, his wife has an affair (I still maintain that Laura could have resisted the temptation to be adulterous if she felt like it, but that’s not the issue here) and is killed while mid-coital with his best friend.

Shadow is haunted by this for the rest of the book, to the point at which it bothers him more than the supernatural happenings surrounding him.

Even before that, the more we learn about Shadow’s past, the more we learn about the challenges he faced:  he was bullied as a child, considered to be “just a big, dumb guy” as an adult, and is still wrongfully pursued for crimes he was only circumstantially involved in.

But these difficulties make the reader empathize with Shadow, and care about what happens to him.  We root for Shadow as he tags along with the mysterious and alternatively peckish and charismatic Wednesday, and as he continuously pursues a means to permanently bring Laura back to life.

He has past traumas, present challenges, and at least one goal that propels him towards the future.  It also helps that he’s three-dimensional, well-written, and as of now, portrayed by an incredibly attractive actor.

Of course (SPOILER ALERT), Shadow never does succeed in fully resurrecting Laura, ultimately allowing her to rest instead, but that doesn’t make the resolution any less satisfying.

Which leads to my next example…

4.  Failure and Success

You remember in Zootopia, when Judy Hopps decides she wants to be cop and her family and town immediately and unanimously endorse her efforts?  Or hey, do you remember Harry Potter’s idyllic childhood with his kindhearted, adoptive family?  Oh!  Or in the X-Files, when Agent Mulder presents overwhelming evidence of extraterrestrial life in the first episode and is immediately given a promotion?  No?

Yeah, me neither.  And there’s a reason for this:  ff your hero gets what they want the entire time, it will be a boring, two-dimensional fantasy that no one will want to read.

A good story is not about the character getting what they want.  A good story is about the character’s efforts and their journey.  The destination they reach could be something far removed from what they originally thought they wanted, and could be no less (if not more so) satisfying because of it.

Let’s look at Toy Story 3, for example:  throughout the entire movie, Woody’s goal is to get his friends back to their longtime owner, Andy, so that they can accompany him to college.  He fails miserably.  None of his friends believe that Andy was trying to put them in the attic, insisting that his intent was to throw them away.  He is briefly separated from them as he is usurped by a cute little girl and his friends are left at a tyrannical daycare center, but with time and effort, they’re reunited, Woody is proven right, and things seem to be back on track.

Do his efforts pay off?  Yes – just not in the way he expected them to.  At the end of the movie, a college-bound Andy gives the toys away to a new owner who will play with them more than he will, and they say goodbye.  Is the payoff bittersweet?  Undoubtedly.  It made me cry like a little bitch in front of my young siblings.  But it’s also undoubtedly satisfying.

So let your characters struggle.  Let them fail.  And let them not always get what they want, so long as they get what they need.

5.  Loving and Being Loved by Others

Take a look back at this list, and all the characters on it:  a gaggle of small town kids and flawed adults, demon-busting underwear models, an ex-con and his dead wife, and a bunch of sentient toys.  What do they have in common?  Aside from the fact that they’re all well-loved heroes of their own stories, not much.

But one common element they all share is they all have people they care about, and in turn, have people who care about them.

This allows readers and viewers to empathize with them possibly more than any of the other qualities I’ve listed thus far, as none of it means anything without the simple demonstration of human connection.

Let’s take a look at everyone’s favorite caped crusader, for example:  Batman in the cartoons and the comics is an easy to love character, whereas in the most recent movies (excluding the splendid Lego Batman Movie), not so much.

Why is this?  In all adaptions, he’s the same mentally unstable, traumatized genius in a bat suit.  In all adaptions, he demonstrates all the qualities I listed before this:  he has flaws and virtues, charisma and vulnerability, regrets from the past and goals for the future, and usually proportionate amounts of failure and success.

What makes the animated and comic book version so much more attractive than his big screen counterpart is the fact that he does one thing right that all live action adaptions is that he has connections and emotional dependencies on other people.

He’s unabashed in caring for Alfred, Batgirl, and all the Robins, and yes, he extends compassion and sympathy to the villains as well, helping Harley Quinn to ultimately escape a toxic and abusive relationship, consoling Baby Doll, and staying with a child psychic with godlike powers until she died.

Cartoon Batman is not afraid to care about others.  He has a support network of people who care about him, and that’s his greatest strength.  The DC CU’s ever darker, grittier, and more isolated borderline sociopath is failing because he lacks these things.

And it’s also one of the reasons that the Lego Batman Movie remains so awesome.

God willing, I will be publishing fresh writing tips every week, so be sure to follow my blog and stay tuned for future advice and observations!

RPG Maker Fever Undead and Deranged

Warning:This article may contain spoilers and the content inappropriate for children…or may not contain. But get the children away from the screen just in case.

Good morning! Or is it already evening? Meh, as if it matters…cellar, where I’m chained and writing my articles  is pitch-dark 24 hours per day. So, today we’ll learn how to make friends, control the undead and have a happy dream ( with some experimental drugs involved). Now then, shall we get started?

1. 1bitHeart

Alright, here goes our first title, made by the author of Alice Mare and LiEat series. 1bitHeart is an adventure game, where your goal is to make as many friends as possible . Game plays similar to Ace Attorney series, but with some QTE-scenes, while setting and atmosphere is kinda similar to TWEWY.You can make 49 friends in total, all of them have unique appearance and personality. Plot of the game is pretty good, dialogues are well-written and sometimes hilarious. Besides, every dialogue has it’s own mood supported by stylish well-chosen music track and quality voice acting. Additionaly I want to praise 1bitHeart’s presentation, since  both artwork and sprites are extremely beautiful .

2. The Boogie Man

And here comes the Boogeyman, the Boogeyman comes for me. Here comes the Boogyeman, he’s gonna take me in my sleep…Nah, actually not. Here comes the latest installement in our favourite  the Strange Men Series. This time with the fully voiced in-game cutscenes (and skippable as bonus). The Boogie Man stays true to series and plays like classical horror-adventure with action cut-ins. At some point of the game you can even play as our old friends -David and Sophie, but new protagonist Keith is quite notable too (he’s my personal fav to be honest).Overall the game makes very good impression, the story is interesting and dialogues are bright and entertaining (with many references to previous games).

I’m not the sensitive type, but  even I was kinda hesitant to play this game at first, since it has waaay too many suggestive content, supported by quite a lot of graphic violence. But after beating it I can state that this game is totally drugtastic. END ROLL plays like quality role-playing game and somewhat reminds the wild mix of the Gray Garden and Re:Kinder, but with better story-writing and gameplay I believe. Game has plenty of  unique dungeons (all of them has some plot-related meaning behind it) as well as tons of optional content, which along with well-designed and interesting characters make END ROLL very enjoyable.

4. Guuzen ~ Ningyou no ito

What? Don’t tell me you’ve never heard about the rite named “doll’s prayer” .You’ll forget all of your worries and  path to the Heaven will open before you. But the place, our heroines’ve found themselves in, can be hardly called Heaven. I wasn’t expecting much from this game, but it turned to be quality horror with beautiful character designs, memorable soundtrack, logical puzzles and surprisingly mature story. The game reminds us that we’re often starting to value something only when it’s already lost.Sadly, right now  Ningyou no ito is only available in chinese, japanese and russian.

5. Liar Jeannie in Crucifix Kingdom

Yet another full-fledged role-playing game has made it to my list. And kinda tough, I must say. Imagine what if Dark Souls was the turn-based RPG with cute nun as protagonist and you’ll get Liar Jeannie… more or less.Unlike many RPGs, this one doesn’t  have any levels, and your stats and basic skills fully depend on your current equipment (by the way, every item in this game can be equipped). A special mention is deserved for game’s bosses - there’s a few main bosses and a lot of optional ones -all of them have their own battle tactics and require some thinking before acting ( especially Pleiades Knights-you want to defeat them, trust me). Also, if things during the fight will become real ugly, you can always summon expendable monsters as your allies (or living shields, heh).

6. At the Tale End

Here we have a game, which looks like a regular fantasy-adventure, but only at first. Plot includes our standard party of heroes (fighter, mage, priest and thief), cursed princess and battle with the local dark lord. But each of these elements plays very different from your typical fantasy stories. At the Tale’s End is definetely a unique experience, a role-playing game in it’s original meaning, without countless random battles, but with a certain weight of responsibility for your actions within a narrative. Also this game has detailed and interesting world as well as quality animated cut-scenes.

7. Pocket Mirror

A long-awaited Pocket Mirror has been finally released this year. And I’m amazed with  enormous amount of work made by the  team of developers. When it comes to game’s graphic, Pocket Mirror is stunning. Beautiful artwork and memorable soundtrack help to create this mysterious, unique atmosphere of dark fairy tale. And with that Pocket Mirror has some gameplay issues. You see, while some puzzles are interesting, most of them is quite uninspiring, some of the locations are pitch-dark and hard to navigate. And with that plot of the game is quite complicated, but doesn’t make much sense,if you don’t pay close attention to numerous in-game notes and letters. This game is definetely not bad,but still leaves some feeling of unpolishness.

8. The Maid of Fairewell Heights

Despite the fact that story of the Maid takes place at the haunted apartment complex, this game has no horror elements. Maid feels more like comedy anime straight from ‘90s. Gameplay (along with main character’s outfits) varies depending on the room your’re currently exploring. Starting with regular cleaning you can end up playing detective or running the shop. Game has bright illustrations, good humour and overall is pretty good.

9. Libretta

I’m sure everyone knows that beside translating games vgperson also makes their own, and Libretta is one of them..This game  definetely gives an interesting experience. While playing similar to Ib, Libretta has it’s own unique atmosphere and somewhat complicated plot, where everyone can find something for themselves (or so I think). Libretta has memorable soundtrack and interesting puzzles, requiring some thinking from the player Also playing shirigories between chapters is kinda fun.

10. Imaginary Friends

Imaginary Friends is a classical rpg-horror-game with quality visuals, well-thought puzzles and some minor chasing scenes. While story lacks originality, it’s still interesting to follow, since charactrers are nice and game has several endings. Game is about 3 hours long and leaves mostly positive impression. So, if you like old-school rpg-horrors-be my guest.

11. Red Trees

While having some minor horror elements, Red Trees stays warm and relaxing adventure game with humorous and ironic view on horror genre and quite unexpected ending in a way. Graphic style of the game and whole atmosphere of a local town is somewhat reminiscent of Mother series.Gameplay is quite simple and consist from few “find-and-bring-to-the- right-person” puzzles, which can be easily solved in 30 minutes or so.

12. The Stairway

Like Red Trees this game is also recommended for players, who’ve already tired from jumpscares, explinct content and overthinking bizarre puzzles. This game has simple yet nice story, unique visuals and some easy logical puzzles. So, if you want to neatly spend 30-40 minutes of your time, try and climb The Stairway to see what’s awiting you at the very end.

13. Friendship

The most fitting description for Friendship would be “horror for the beginners”, since it can surprise or startle you only if you haven’t played any other rpg-horrors before. In fact Friendship doesn’t stand out much compared with better quality school horrors ( like Misao or Amayado Bus Stop ).But it doesn’t mean that the game is bad-Friendship is a good way to spend 30 minutes seeing how strong attachment to a friend can turn simple game into yandere-horror.

14. By Ourselves

And here comes our closing title about two former classmates, who’ve found themeselves trapped in the room. Game is only 10 minutes long and basically is one big locked door puzzle. You find the first hint and then successively exploring the room for the way out. Game has two endings determined by how much attention you’re paying to your comrade in distress.

Creators Misunderstanding Their Fan Base: Undertale

I love Undertale, so do many others. However, I love Undertale because of the fan base. I have met so many kind and determined individuals that I wouldn’t have met otherwise if not for Undertale. Many of these people are artists, and it’s nice to see the same characters drawn in so many different styles. Even better is when there is a story written about Undertale, a what if this happened instead of this? Great examples of this are Dreamtale, by @jokublog (currently not theirs more about that later), Glitchverse, by @camilaart, and Xtale/Underverse, by Jackei/@xtaleunderverse. There are many more alternate stories/universes I would love to share but I really want to focus on these two right now. As you may or may not know, both these creators make animations/comics based off their story lines, and they are incredible. The amount of effort that goes into each and every frame of animation is jaw dropping to say the least. The story is also pretty great compared to most, especially Glitchtale’s constant subversion of every expectation and Underverse’s imaginative plot and character portrayal are no small feat either. It’s immediately clear that a lot of effort goes into their work to make it as great as possible and create their animations fairly quickly. However, I’m not here to simply sing their praises because the title isn’t “Amazing Undertale Universes You Have To See To Believe” no, this is “Creators Misunderstanding Their Fan Base: Undertale”

Recently a story came out about Joku threatening to use her fan base against another person who was just giving feedback on a shirt that they made. This led to them deleting their blog and now it’s being held by a nice individual so that Joku can have the name back if she wants. Joku makes sure people know that she is getting lots of hate over this misbehavior of hers. She’s making it seem like her fan base is full of haters that demand comics every week and don’t care about the person behind the project at all. Her “fans” led her to deleting her blog that she had used for a while now, over one small incident. That’s. Not. True. Joku’s fans are passionate, without a doubt, but they have huge amounts of respect for the amount of work that goes into this complex narrative that Joku is almost always working on. Joku, you’re fans are there, making fan art, liking your posts, and sending positive words your way, but you don’t care about that, do you? You just want to show everyone that you can overcome the haters by yourself, but you can’t, nobody can on their own. You say you ignore the haters, but dealing with what I’ve heard people say about you in silence, isn’t a great idea. If you open up more to your audience, show your real fans that you still care about them, I have no doubt that there will be a shift in the types of people who view your content. I along with many others didn’t hate you for what you did, was it a bit uncalled for? Yea, a little bit, but that one incident with someone WHO’S ALREADY FORGIVEN AND APOLOGIZED FOR MAKING IT PUBLIC, shouldn’t have led to you deleting your blog. The blog is being held for you, your choices are to reset back to zero and build your blog all over again, or quit and leave everyone.

Jackei, the creator of Xtale and Underverse, is passionate about her work. Her amazing narrative and intense animations make it a joy to experience through and through, but she has her flaws as well. One day you’ll get a hilarious shitpost from Jackei about how she got braces, the next a comic about how she is having to stand against her fans barrage of negativity. I’m saying it right now that there is a difference in HATING and CRITICIZING and it’s easy to tell which is which. Hate usually is opinionated, relying on the same feeling from others to help boost their opinion into more of a fact. Fans that criticize a work however often point out actual problems with the product they were presented with. Maybe the animation was a bit low quality in some places, or maybe the dialog didn’t add anything to the situation, but whatever it is its a real problem that they just shed light on for you. Those fans care, unlike the haters you insist are your fans. Many people really love your intense devotion to your work, making comics often along with incredible animations that have breathtaking moments a plenty, but it sucks when someone you hugely respect talks down to you. You make it clear that whenever you get hate you try to deal with it in silence, and for the most part if you are a strong enough person that works out really well for you. Not only does it improve your image as a creator but it makes fans think much much more of you as a person. However, you show us that side of you way too much, and its clear you want to be that person you portray yourself as. You’ve gotten much better about showing us that you can withstand the hate sent your way, and your shitposts/memes are always a joy to behold, but why not show off the better side of your fan base, the people who really care about you and your work. It’d make a difference in how you view your fans. Just remember Jackei, haters shout loud because they want others to hear them, but when a fan comments, they don’t even expect an answer from anyone.

Camila is an incredible artist as well, creating a 20 minute animation in less than 4 months is unreal. On top of that the animations feature a standard of quality not usually seen in animations made in the same amount of time. However, Camila is known to harp on people for asking when the latest episode is going to come out. Her response is usually a meme or her telling them to chill and just wait. Camila has the opposite issue that Jackei does, she will show all the asks about when the episode is coming out, making it seem like that’s all her fan base cares about. That and her talking down to her fans often, sometimes calling them stupid for not understanding a small detail in the animation. She’s who Jackei strives to be, impervious to all hate sent her way. To be honest, it’s not the best way to act towards your fans, sometimes people honestly just want to know because they are hyped for the next episode. Especially with the amount of information Camila will spoil about the episode, when in reality it’s mostly misdirection to make hers fans come to one conclusion before the episode even starts, just so she can subvert everyone’s expectations in the end. It’s incredible how many times I knew what would happen just because I followed Camila’s tumblr, @camilaart. Camila, I desperately wanted to donate $50 to you on patreon after you lost part of your house because I desired to talk to the biggest inspiration in my life at the time. To be honest I still want to, but I’m only 15 and I have no income for which to donate to either of you, sorry /;-;/. Camila, your awe inspiring, I just wish you would act more mature and be more loyal to people. After what happened to Jackei you threw her under the bus, reblogging what she said just to garner it more exposure. It’s shocking how many people you turn on after someone comes out with something bad about that person, like Jackei and Ultima almighty. You’re getting much better though about pointing out positive things, like animators and artists who have almost no exposure on youtube, is pretty amazing. It’d be amazing though, if you could use the positives to detract haters instead of memes. You’re a role model for some people whether you want to believe it or not, and sometimes people take anything that role models say as undeniable fact. Your on the right path, please don’t reset again.

(Everything I said are just my thoughts on these two amazing animators, I just really want to get these out their so that maybe they will both see this post and reflect on themselves as creators. I plan to do more of these but I don’t what topics/people to do yet. And guys, don’t hate these artists just for me pointing out a few things wrong with them, that’s the complete opposite of what I’m trying to say. If you don’t like them, then just ignore them, it’s as simple as that. Thanks for reading this, it truly means a lot to me.)

Hey, all!  Amy here and feel free to skip this, but I noticed a huge thing going around with fanfiction writers and fanfiction readers. Kinda throwing arrows at one another over mistakes and how they should be addressed.

Okay, first off: stop.  Ew.  It’s gross. Y’all are big boys and girls and y’all can act like it.  You don’t need to attack each other at the knees behind the safety of your screens.

Secondly:  there are points on both sides.  People who write have a right to be proud of their work and can choose not to accept criticism.  On the other hand, people who read and absorb the work have the right as well to point out mistakes they noticed if it’s meant to be helpful.

So how can people interact civilly when it comes to fanfiction and it’s accompanying critiques? By following a few internet rules, plain and simple.  No, I’m not gonna tell you to forgive and forget or just roll over and let the other person have their way.  That’s not what you do IRL and that’s not what you do online either.  Instead, both persons have a series of rules to follow in order to try and make the most of their experience.

I start with you because you’re the ones who have poured your heart and soul into this baby. And I get it, I do.  When you spend hours and hours slaving over your baby, going over the idea thousands of times in your head, trying to get the idea on paper, and trying to make it look good, then oh heck to the yes it’s your baby and you’re gonna defend it to the death.  I expect that and that’s okay.  What’s not okay is when it interferes with your ability to check in with the situation and see if they actually meant harm, so here are a few rules I’ve started to use over my years of fanfiction writing:

  1. Read the entire comment for content.  This is a bitter pill to take, especially if they sound condescending or snarky.  I’ve run into a few of them, and they’re never pleasant to deal with, but some of them have good ideas.  Try to filter out the junk of the comment and get to the meat of it all.  (I’ll get to what to do if there’s no meat later)
  2. Take a break from the comment when you get angry. And chances are that if it’s an unsolicited comment, you’re going to get angry.  This is your baby and you’ve worked hard on it.  If the crtiquer isn’t at least taking that into account, you may even get furious.  Get up and walk away.  They do not deserve your wrath.
  3. Decide for yourself if they have a point. Most critiquers tend to leave their comments because they’re trying to help in their own (somewhat obnoxious) way. If they’ve got a point, thank them, but also try to express if the critique was delivered well.  If it was, tell them so they can help more people. If not, tell them so they can work on it.  IF THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY POINT AT ALL AND ARE JUST BEING RUDE, get rid of it.  They’re not worth your time.
  4. Respond or toss.  This is up to you.  If they had content that was actually useful, then they were being helpful like they were trying to be.  If they had content and it wasn’t useful, it’s up to you what to do.  If they had zero content in their critique or it wasn’t relevant at all, skip it.  They’re not worth your time.

I actually formed these rules after an encounter with a critiquer who was completely neutral in tone, blurted my mistakes for the world to see, and essentially made me feel like the absolute worst writer in the world.  They weren’t harsh, but their critique did hurt me, especially because I’d still just been starting out.

The first thing that happened was I got angry.  I was livid, furious.  Like, how dare they?  Couldn’t they just sit back and enjoy the story?  I spent a good week or so avoiding my fanfiction account just because I was so pissed off.  I ended up talking to my mom and she asked me if they had any points.  I think she was going for “if they don’t, then they’re not worth your time”, but they did. After that, I went back and tried to see it from their point of view.

Didn’t mean I suddenly wasn’t mad at them.  I was mad, but I also realized that they, in their own roundabout and hurtful (to me, who reads inflection into typed words and winces at every loud noise and criticism) way, were trying to help me.

I worked on it, and I don’t think they ever commented on my stuff again, but the people who already loved my stuff?  The people who said that my stuff was ‘cute’ or ‘genius’?  They loved it all the more!  The critiquer may not have stuck around, but those who did benefited.

(It really took me a long time to stop being angry at them.  Now I just kind of take a lesson from them.  As a fanfiction writer, and as a critiquer myself.)

I’m saying this as someone who has pretty high standards for what I read.  I look into formatting, tenses, plot, characterization, spelling, and even comma usage!  These little things do actually bug me, and sometimes enough to the point of wanting to comment, but I’ve been on the other side of it and remember the frustration and the anger that can come from a wrongly worded comment, so there are a few rules that I’ve formulated in order to be the best critiquer I can be and help as many people as possible get as amazing as they can as a writer!

Note:  These rules are for critiquers who actually do want to help writers get better and improve the overall quality of internet written works. If you’re here because of some superiority complex, these rules may be difficult for you to follow.  I, however, encourage you to do your best and perhaps one day you’ll be a good critiquer.  *^_^*

  1. Find a way to figure out if the author even wants your critique.  One way to do this is to respectfully ask them.  Always open with a positive.  Something like “Hey, I liked ___ about your story, but I noticed something was a bit off. Can I give you a constructive critique?” Typically, an author would be happy to know you cared about their opinion, so this will go either one of two ways.  They will either (A) allow the critique and actually listen to what you have to say or (B) politely decline the offer.  This means they have made up their mind and you are to let it go.  The back button is a wonderful friend at this point.
  2. Follow the sandwich format.  This is a tried and true method for getting people to actually listen.  If you start in with the critique, the author will feel attacked and immediately get defensive.  Instead of wondering if you’ve got any point, they will find ways to contradict you and argue.  Instead, open with something you liked about the story.  There was a reason you read it all to the end, wasn’t there?  Mention that first (AND BE HONEST!  NO ONE LIKES SOMEONE WHO GIVES OUT FALSE COMPLIMENTS), and then get to the critique, or ‘meat’, of your critique.  When that’s done, exit with a thank-you for being willing to listen to your comments.  It takes a lot for a creator to listen to someone point out the flaws in their baby, even if they’re trying to learn.  Remember that you want this to be a positive interaction, not a demolition derby.
  3. No insults or other derogatory comments. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, the writer is trying their best.  Insulting them makes them less willing to hear you out, much less accept your comments and get better.
  4. No elevating yourself over them.  It’s a no-brainer.  You’re not there to school them, you’re there to help them.  Helping requires a serving mind, which puts their needs before your ego.
  5. Do not hound the author.  If they listen but don’t take your comments, you’re not allowed to harass them.  Most likely, they don’t see a point in your comment and have elected to ignore it. And that’s fine.  The point is that you managed to bring it to their attention once.  Maybe they’ll come back to it later, maybe not.  Either way, once your critique is given, it’s done.  Unless they come to you asking about it, your job is to pack up and vamoose, or simply to sit back and enjoy watching the rest of the story unfold.
  6. Make sure your comments are objective.  Like, if there’s a comma problem, tell them about it. If there’s verb tenses being messed up, inform them politely.  If person A didn’t get with person B, then you’re not critiquing.  That’s a matter of opinion and doesn’t belong in the critiquing category.
  7. Be respectful.  They’re going on a limb and listening to you, and it’s the author’s choice whether or not to continue the correspondence. You don’t have to ‘kiss up to them’ or ‘serve them’, but you have to make sure you’re not being a jerk and that all your comments are warranted.

I know there are a lot of rules, but critiquing is hard, especially with how a lot of people view them.  But you, the critiquer, ARE NOT EVIL.  You’re not the bad guy.  You’re not messed up.  You’re not ‘sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong’.  You’re human and you’re trying to be helpful.  These are just tips and tricks on how to go about it the right way and maximize your helpfulness.

The last thing I’ll say is that not everyone will follow these rules.  They will think they’re stupid or pandering or all-around dumb. Some people who claim to critique will continue to slander our good name by acting like holier-than-thou snits. Some people who write will continue to get outrageously angry for persons daring to say something went wrong.

Here’s how to deal with them:

  1. Leave the computer.  Or the website, just for a bit.  Enjoy the sunshine, take a walk, talk with your best friend, eat some ice cream, go play.  See if it just blows over.  They don’t get to take away your happiness because they’re angry.
  2. Delete the hate.  When you’re good and happy, you can delete the hate mail, or maybe grab a friend to laugh at it.  But don’t respond to hate with anger.  As my good friend Warlord Okeer said, you shall inflict “the greatest insult an enemy can suffer. To be ignored.”
  3. If they chase you down in anger, block them. This is okay to do.  For fanfiction writers:  if they continue to pester you with their comments after you say ‘no thanks’, block their tails.  For fanfiction critiquers:  if they got angry over a critique you gave, provided that they said okay and provided that you followed the rules of critiquing, you’re allowed to block them. You did it right.  Don’t even stress.

And then there are the times where we forget to follow the rules and insult someone on accident. It happens.  If you realize you’re in the wrong, it’s just one rule.

  1. Apologize.  No, you don’t have to grovel for forgiveness, but understand that your actions may have hurt someone else and react accordingly.  If they won’t take it, at least make the promise to yourself to be better in the future.

And that’s it.  I know it seems like a lot to swallow, but it all boils down to making sure your words are respectful, kind, and true.

So earlier today I got rather pissed off when some rude anon who has probably never made a GIF in their lives decided to attack my friend (and one of the best GIFmakers I know) for no reason telling them not to talk about GIFmaking like it’s a big deal since it’s just taking clips from existing video. I was hoping to forget about this, but I couldn’t stop thinking about how many non-GIFmakers really do think that’s all GIFmaking is (including myself before I started making GIFs to some extent). Luckily, most people aren’t that rude about it and know not to insult content creators over a topic they actually don’t know much about…but I still feel the need to discuss some of the often lengthy effort that goes into making medium to high quality GIFs.

As a disclaimer, I’m NOT trying to be elitist and I honestly don’t consider myself one of the top tier GIFmakers. I also don’t think that GIFmakers HAVE to put in a lot of effort to alter GIFs from the original video frames if they don’t want to. It’s just a hobby where we try to capture/highlight cool moments using a severely limited and dying file format lol…so it’s really up to the individual how much they wanna put into it. However, the truth of the matter is that many GIF and graphics makers that contribute greatly to numerous fandoms DO put in a significant amount of effort to make their GIFs look different from and better than the original video.

Imagine falling in-love with Chris.

It may have only been your third date with Chris, but you were already certain you were starting to fall for the guy. This was a first for you, it’d never taken you three dates before. It was always- without exception- a copious amount of dates before your mind allowed your heart to decide on someone. You were a hopeless romantic, but your parents raised you smart. They’d both experienced their fair share of toxic relationships, having both been cheated on before by their earlier partners which left you with the inclination to always love with your head before your heart. You thought you could do that with Chris, but the second he spoke to you- you knew you were a goner. That mental checklist you had, the tests you’d appropriate- they suddenly became insignificant. He was the one. He proved it in three dates without you even having to ask. He was the ultimate gentleman: kind, loving, caring, compassionate, sweet, and genuine. He’d hold open doors and pull out chairs, get the check and drive you home, lend you his jacket if it was cold and lend you his arm if it was slippery. He was the kind of guy parents wanted their daughters to date and eventually marry.

The clock in the lobby of your apartment block displayed the time of 12:03PM when you and Chris walked in. The security guard, Carson looked up from his lukewarm coffee and waved a lazy hand at the both of you as you crossed the main floor to the line of elevators. You lived in a neighborhood with very low crime rate, in a building with 24/7 security, but it never stopped Chris from walking you all the way to your door. It was a gesture you loved, a gesture you never felt had any other motives. If all he got at the end of each date was a hug, or a kiss on the cheek, he’d still walk away smiling. He was patient and respectful; qualities that were lacking in many. That was why you felt safe with him, content and comfortable as long as you were with him. You hoped he knew that, you needed him to know that.

“I told you I’d have you back in one piece,” Chris joked as soon as the two of you arrived at your front door. He released your hand so you could work on opening your front door. He watched you, smiling at how beautiful you looked in that red dress. He couldn’t believe it when you told him this was the first time you’d put it on, asking if it was because you’d only recently acquired such a masterpiece. You’d told him “no”, that “it’s just something I’ve been saving for a special occasion.” His smile tenfold when he heard that, honored that he was what you’d decided to bestow that beautiful dress with.

The lock of your apartment door clicked open and you turned your back on your front door to smile at him. “Thank you for tonight,” you said and he nodded, taking one of your hands in his. An ache filled both your hearts, knowing this was the end of the night. “I actually had a really good time,” you told him and he laughed.

“Why on earth do you sound so surprised?”

“Because it was a party and I don’t do parties well,” you admitted and he chuckled, unable to wipe that love sick smile off his face. He couldn’t explain it, the way he felt when he was with you. It was ineffable, and it was almost inevitable where his relationship with you would end up. “But it was fun, you made it fun.”

“I told you when we met I’m a very fun guy.”

“And I didn’t believe you then, but I believe you now,” you said then giggled when his smile widened. Your gaze lowered to your joined hands; neither were going to let go of the other. “So um…” It was so quiet in the hallway you heard yourself swallow. You didn’t want him to go, you knew the second you walked inside and he turned for the elevator- you’d miss him. You wanted to invite him inside, but you were afraid of what you might risk if you rushed into things. It was the third date, and commonly third dates meant sex but- it couldn’t just be about sex with him. If he was the one, you wanted more.

“Are you tired?” He suddenly blurted.

“What?” You looked at him confusedly.

“Do you want to talk?” He asked. “‘Cause I feel like we didn’t get to talk much at the party and-” He cut himself off then smiled, releasing your hand to tuck a lock of your hair behind your ear. “I’d really like to have some alone time with you.” You felt the butterflies flapping their wings rapidly against the walls of your stomach. “I’m not trying anything, Y/N. I’m serious about just wanting to talk, I always think we have the best conversations.”

“I don’t think you’re trying anything,” was all you said before opening your front door and beckoning him inside. You slipped off your heels and immediately became much shorter than him, turning on the lights in your kitchen as he removed his shoes.

The light in your open floor kitchen illuminated your living room, showcasing a coffee table drowning in an ocean of opened travel books about Italy, scattered pieces of paper with notes scribbled upon their white surfaces, and writing materials in various colors. You traveled for a living, he remembered you telling him that. You loved to write and you had an incredible sense of wanderlust, so what job was better for you than a travel journalist? Your job probably tore you away from your home and loved ones as much as his did, but still, there was optimism about the development of your relationship.

“Do you want something to drink?”

“I’m good,” he assured you, settling on your couch. “So when’s the next job?” He asked, looking back at you instead of scanning your materials in front of him. He felt like it was an invasion of privacy. This was actually the first time he’d been inside your apartment. It was nice, it possessed class he’d expected it to from looking at the owner. It was a little big considering you lived alone, but who was he to judge?

“Not for a few months,” you answered as you joined him on the couch. He took his arm off the back and rested it in his lap, planting both feet on the ground to give you more room. You were sat close enough so you could exchange an affectionate touch or two, but far enough to spot and cease any unwanted advances. It wasn’t Chris you were worried about, it was you. The sexual tension in the air was thick, the fact you were still a little buzzed made it worst. If you didn’t keep that small portion of your brain sober to remind you of the wonderful possibilities you could have with Chris by taking things slow, the two of you would be tangled in your sheets by now. “Italy is actually for a holiday, ‘cause it’s different when you’re working. Sometimes I don’t know if combining my two favorite things with a job was the best idea, I feel like it drains the goodness.”

“I’m sure it does, but it beats being stuck in an office doing that nine-to-five thing like a ritual.” He said and you chuckled, nodding in agreement. “I’m going to ask you something,” he reached across for your hand, the pad of his thumb gently running along your knuckles. “And don’t freak out ‘cause it’s just part of my dating process.”

“If you don’t want someone to freak out then don’t say the words ‘freak out’ ‘cause it freaks people out,” you told him and he laughed, squeezing your hand. “What is it?” You asked, resting your elbow on the back of your couch and leaning your head against your palm.

“How do you know when you’re in-love with someone?”

You felt your breath caught in your throat as you tried to process his words. Was it really a question that was part of his dating process, or was he trying to tell you something? You falling head over heels for him after three dates, you understood. You were a girl and not even feminism protected you from those Hollywood Rom-Com stereotypes when it came to a guy as perfect as Chris. But Chris was a guy and you weren’t that perfect, so what was he hinting at?

“How do you know when you’re in-love with someone?” You answered with his question and he chuckled, shaking his head. Clearly he’d expected that reaction from you, it was a bold question after only three dates.

“I can’t envision my future without her being there,” he answered. “I start to plan with her in mind. I become more aware of my decisions. I don’t do anything that I think will affect her negatively. And of course, the cliché of always wanting to be around her, and…” He shuffled closer, taking your hand and pressing it to where his heart was. “And feeling my heart beat twice as fast and three times as hard when I’m with her.”

“Ditto,” you heard yourself mumble as you watched him lean in.

“If I tell you I’m in-love with you,” he whispered, lips inches from yours, “will you promise not to run?” You nodded, taking your head from your hand and resting said hand on his cheek instead. “Because I’m in-love with you, Y/N. I’m in-love with you after three dates, is that insane?”

“No,” you smiled, “‘cause I’m pretty sure you had me at two.”

A/n: I really hope that you guys enjoy this, because I can honestly say that I did not see the day that I would be writing Harry Styles fanfiction again. That being said, I really enjoyed writing this, and I am eternally grateful to @secretschuylersister for all of her encouragement, as always. And thank you to @fragmentofmymind and @butlinislin for listening to me ramble about this lovely human last night.

You were going to murder Janice as soon as you got to the office. You couldn’t believe that she had called you at midnight. On the other hand, you could believe that your boss would do such a thing. She had not been afraid to drag you out of bed at five a.m., so why should this be any different?

Your hair was still a mess, and you had found a small stain on your white shirt a few minutes after you left your apartment. In between ignoring your phone’s constant wringing and attempting to throw on a little bit of mascara at stoplights, you wracked your brain for a reason as to why Janice needed you to be at the office this late.

You ruffled through your bag, and after five minutes, concluded that you had forgotten your key card amid the chaos. You sent up a silent thank you that Katie worked reception, and wasn’t allowed to leave until all of the artists finished their sessions, and pulled out your phone in a last-ditch effort to not piss Janice off any more than she was bound to be.

Thankfully, Katie picked up the phone on the second ring. “Did you forget your keycard again?”

You rolled your eyes. Katie wasn’t one to let things go. “I don’t know what all of this ‘again’ nonsense is about, but yes I did forget my key card. Because as you may have noticed, my boss called me into work at an ungodly hour.”

You hung up the phone as Katie held the door open for you, giving you a look that could only mean that she was feeling pretty great about herself. “Did you forget her coffee again?” Kate asked, but before you could answer, she handed you Janice’s usual order. You only had time to give her a grateful smile before she took her seat behind the front desk and you hurried up to the studio.

If it was someone important enough to make you get out of bed at this hour, you knew that Janice would be in Studio C, her favorite. She always claimed that C had the best acoustics, but you knew that all of the rooms were exactly the same. You weren’t going to be the one to tell her otherwise.

You rushed into the room only to hear a loud beeping that was echoing loudly around the room. Janice had begun to yell, but you were too focused on the noise that was coming from your bag. You began to dig around in your purse, annoyed that you didn’t think to put your cell phone on silent before coming into work that morning. “I’m so sorry about this,” you said, mostly to yourself as you dug through your unsurprisingly cluttered work bag. But then, you noticed that the timer on your wrist was flashing zero.

You hadn’t looked at it in days, not wanting to know when it was going to happen. You kept yourself occupied with work, hoping that you wouldn’t psych yourself out. Clearly, it had worked, but you did find yourself wishing that you had taken the time to brush your hair, instead of haphazardly finger combing it in the car.

You took a moment to calm down, to remind yourself to breathe. Your soulmate was here, in this room. As much as you had been dreading this moment, you also knew that this was going to be something that you remembered for the rest of your life. You were pulled from your thoughts by a deep voice saying something that you couldn’t completely make out.

You shifted your gaze from the timer on your wrist to the man that was standing in front of you. And you immediately began to laugh. Of all the days that the universe could have decided to play a huge cosmic joke on you, this was not the day that you were hoping for. Your eyes searched the room for someone who had a matching timer on your wrist, but much to your chagrin, the only person with a matching time stamp was already standing in front of you.

“You have got to be kidding me.” The words had tumbled from your mouth before you realized what was happening.

Standing in front of you was Harry Styles, as in the Harry Styles. The Harry Styles who you were supposed to be helping your boss record with today, apparently. Harry Styles who was looking you up and down, from your messy hair to the worn out flats on your feet. Harry Styles that was your soulmate.

“Hi,” he said, voice surprisingly soft. You forced yourself to meet his eyes. He gave you the smallest of smiles, before glancing down at his wrist. “I was starting to worry that you were going to be late.”

You saw Janice shuffling herself and a few producers out of the room from the corner of your eye, and you couldn’t remember a time when you had been so thankful for your sometimes overbearing boss.

“I wish I had a witty retort for you, but I am kind of still processing this,” you said, motioning around the studio. You would have thought that you were prepared for any response that he could have given you, but as his laugh filled up the entire room, you felt a strange kind of tug in your stomach.

“You look like you need to sit down,” he said quietly, as if he was afraid to startle you. Harry placed a gentle hand on your arm, guiding you to one of the couches that lined the walls of the control room. “Are you okay?” he asked softly, brushing a piece of hair behind your ear.

“Not if you keep doing things like that,” you said, staring at your hands in your lap. Your heart felt like it was going to pound out of your chest. You could feel the heat rising to your face, and there was no way for you to escape this situation.

You had imagined meeting your soulmate a million times, in the most cheesy meet-cutes that you could think of. But this was ridiculous. He was supposed to be a sweet boy that you met at a coffee shop, or at the park while he was walking his adorable puppy. This was ridiculous, and this was actually happening to you.

“Is there anything that I can do? I can get a water or-” His voice was impossibly soft, and you could feel the butterflies intensify in your stomach.

“It’s not fair that you know exactly what to say.” You said, refusing to meet his eyes.

“I would have liked to think that was one of my better qualities.” He huffed, but when you finally looked at him, he winked at you, sending a shiver down your spine.

“In that case, I guess you should work on being a little less perfect.” You said under your breath as you sank further back into the couch. “I think they made a mistake,” you said, voice barely a whisper. Although you thought you had said it so quietly that no one would hear, his laughter immediately faded.

“Who did?” he asked. You attempted to ignore the warm feeling in your stomach at the sound of his voice.

“I don’t know, them,” you said, gesturing up at some unknown cosmic force. “They with a capital T.”

His hands wrapped around yours, and suddenly, you felt grounded again. “I don’t even know your name yet, but I already know that you are absolutely perfect. Do you want to know how I know that.”

You couldn’t formulate a response, and simply nodded your head.

He placed your hand on his chest, fingers splayed out over his heart. “Because I can feel it.” He held your hand a little tighter, pushing it closer to him. “Here.”

Your forced yourself to take your eyes off of where your hand met his chest, and attempt to formulate a response. After a few seconds of coming up blank, you simply muttered your name, figuring that would at least take care of that problem.

Harry was beaming at you, and you couldn’t help but beam right back.

“I would ask if you wanted to go and get a coffee, but I guess that it is a little late for that.”

“We could always get decaf.”

It took the both of you a few seconds to even realize that you had made a joke. You were both consumed in a fit of giggles. After you finally regained control of yourself, you realized that you had fallen over into Harry’s lap, and as you stared up at his smiling face, you were in no hurry to get up.

“Don’t you have music to record?” You asked after a few minutes of contented silence. Harry had taken to tracing the lines on your palm, the metal of his rings heating up as time went on, and although you would have been happy to lay there on that couch with him for the rest of your life, it had occurred to you that he had a career, and there was a reason why he was in your place of employment.

“I think that it could wait, at least until tomorrow.” He said, his voice slow and even.

“Well then,” you said, hopping off of the couch and offering him your hand. “How about that decaf?”

He took your hand in his, and lead you out of the studio. He gave Janice and the producers an apologetic smile as he lead you down the corridor. “Are you sure that you should be leaving like this?” You asked, not wanting him to get into trouble with the studio.

“I think that they will be okay with a few extra hours of sleep.” He laughed.

You spotted Katie at her desk, trying her absolute best to act like a normal human being. “Give me a few seconds?” you asked Harry. He glanced over your shoulder and pecked you on the cheek before making his way over to the couches and pulling out his phone.

“What is going on?” Katie practically squealed, eyes darting between you and your soulmate.

You simply showed her your timer, which was finally done counting down.

“Are you kidding me?” She asked, grabbing your wrist, examining the timer.

“That’s what I said,” you laughed, a little too loudly. Harry’s laugh echoed through the empty lobby, making your face heat up all over again. “I know that it sounds crazy, but I think that it is really going to work.”

“Well, I hope so, because damn,” she said, wiggling her eyebrows at you.

You rolled your eyes at her, but promised to call before you grabbed Harry’s hand and dragged him to the, thankfully empty, Starbucks around the corner.

Dealing with religious acquaintances as an atheist.

Some of y'all know I periodically get this bug up my ass to write something to help atheists become less obnoxious people and this topic came up in a Facebook group I belong to.

I don’t think the person who posted is an atheist, but the topic itself got me thinking of all the atheists I know and how they’d react.  A lot of them would be rude and there’s just no need for that.  For every annoying Christian out here trying to save the souls of the nonbelievers, there’s an equally annoying atheist who just can’t help reminding everyone they don’t believe in god or, worse, that they’re smarter for not believing in god.  If someone says “God bless you” and your first response is “God isn’t real,” that makes you an asshole atheist.

In an office setting, talking about your religion all the time is unprofessional and I highly doubt a Muslim in the same situation would be afforded the same leeway at work.  It should be pretty easy to scoot out of the conversation without offending anyone though.  Say something positive and then nicely decline, all with a smile and a pleasant demeanor.

“Thanks for the invite, but I’m content in my spirituality.”
“No thanks, but I’ll let you know if I ever decide to look into your faith.”
“That’s nice of you, but I’ve actually been an atheist for quite some time.”

The last one sometimes results in a “Well I’ll pray for you,” which is fine with me.  Pray your heart out, girl.  I’m lo-key offended if you’re deeply religious and you’re *not* praying for my soul because that would mean you don’t think I’m worth saving in your worldview.  You praying for me does not decrease my quality of life in any way but it gives you peace of mind, and that’s how I interact with religious people.  If what you’re doing doesn’t bother me but it makes you feel better, then please keep doing it.  That’s a net gain of positivity and I’m about making the world better on all fronts.

Like I Do-Daniel Seavey (Part 2)

Author’s Note: I am so sorry that this took so long but I think it’s worth the wait! ;-) Here is part one if you haven’t read it already!  :-) Also–I must warn you that the beginning is a little boring as Daniel is not in it (if you read the first part, you know what and why) but trust me, it is building up to something good! :-)

♥ ♥ ♥

You wave goodbye to the last of your friends as they go their separate ways in the driveway and sigh to yourself before turning back inside. Everyone had left the party by now and it was just you, Eric and your parents.

“What now Birthday Girl?” Eric asks, throwing an arm over your shoulder as you walk with him into the living room. “Now we clean.” your dad laughs as he joins the two of you, his eyes immediately darting to Eric’s arm around you. You laugh before agreeing with your father.

“Basically. We have to put the food away, put the presents upstairs and then take out all of this trash.” you answer him and he nods in agreement before grabbing a few gift bags.

“These go up to your room right?” he asks and you smile at him. A while ago you’d given him a tour of the house and you were surprised he actually remembered where your room was.

“Eric you don’t have to help clean up.” you offer but he quickly rejects. “Not a chance. Besides, I’m taking you out tonight so its only right.” he says and your dad feels the need to chime in.

“I like him!” he yells from the other side of the room where he was taking a few decorations down. “Oh goodness. Yes, all of the presents go upstairs.” you say and Eric shoots you a wink before disappearing with a few gifts.

You leave to help your mom in the kitchen and grab the broom to sweep up some fallen confetti. “Here you go.” she says as she wields the dustpan and you clean for a while in silence, the two of you exchanging smiles every now and then as you worked.

“I think that’s everything.” she says happily as she shoves the last container of left overs in the refrigerator. “Okay. I’ll go check on dad and Eric.” you chuckle before heading back into the living room to find Eric and your dad on the couch together.

“Oh God. Is he lecturing you?” you groan as you stand across from them. “Only a little.” your dad jokes and Eric just smiles at you. “Okay well I’m going to get changed for tonight.” you excuse yourself before making your way to the stairs.

“(Y/N)!” Eric calls and you pause for a moment as you listen to what he has to say. “I left the opened gifts on the floor by your closet and the unopened ones on your bed!” he says happily and you thank him as you ascend the stairs to your room, wondering what he was talking about when he said unopened gifts.

Suddenly it hit you, Daniel kissing you, Daniel leaving in the middle of your party because he felt “sick”. You never got a chance to open his gift and now you weren’t sure if you even wanted to…It wasn’t that you didn’t want to exactly, you just weren’t sure if anything between the two of you had changed.

And now, staring at the gift bag on your bed, you hesitantly dial Daniel’s number and wait for your answer, your hands shaking as you bring the phone up to your ear. “Hello,” he greets and your heart practically leaps at the sound of his voice,

“Dani I-” your heart sinks as you’re cut off by the continuation of his voicemail and you sigh before leaving him a quick message. “Dani, I’m sorry. Please call me.” you say softly, your voice trailing off a bit before you continue.

“We need to talk about things.” you mumble before reaching for his gift and setting it down on your vanity, playing with the handles on the bag before emptying the contents.

A black jewelry box catches your eye and you bite your lip as you open it slowly, a gasp leaving your lips when a Pandora charm bracelet is revealed along with a tiny note from Daniel. Reaching for the note first, you fight the tears as you read Daniel’s message out loud.

“18 years of memories and counting. Can you match each one?–Love, Daniel” You smile before taking the bracelet in your hands, memories of you and Daniel flashing back to you with each charm.

A music note to symbolize the beginning of you and Daniel’s friendship when you met in guitar lessons, a panda bear to symbolize the time you Daniel got kicked out of the Oregon Zoo, a palm tree for the first time you visited him Los Angeles…

Last but not least, a silver heart that you guessed marked his feelings for you; the memory being your first kiss. It all happened so fast and a feeling of guilt hits you as you think back to the kiss.

“He doesn’t know you like I do!“ You remember Daniel yelling and you mentally curse yourself for pushing him so hard. Maybe if you wouldn’t have argued with him he wouldn’t have done what he did.

“He doesn’t love you like I do. He can’t. No one can.” His words echo in your mind and you trace bottom lip with your thumb, remembering the way Daniel’s lips felt against yours, trying to sort out your feelings about the kiss as you did so.

Did you really not like it? Your hand moves to your stomach as you remember the way you felt as Daniel got closer to you just seconds before the kiss. You’d never been in love, and you weren’t even sure you knew what love was.

Your hands reach for your phone and you dial Daniel’s number once more, your finger hovering over the call button for a few seconds before a knock in the doorway pulls you out of your thoughts.

"Hey (Y/N), you going to be ready soon?” Eric asks softly as he takes in your appearance and you remember that you originally came upstairs to get changed. You mentally face palm yourself before stuffing the bracelet Daniel had gotten you into the vanity drawer and get up to face Eric.

“I actually don’t feel too well. Would you be angry if I asked for a rain check?” you frown sympathetically as you lie to him. “That’s okay, its been a long night. Happy birthday, (Y/N). I’ll call you tomorrow.” he says understandingly and gives you a hug before leaving you alone with your thoughts.

You felt bad for suddenly canceling on Eric but he was right, it had been a long night and you were ready for tomorrow already, even though it was full of its own pros and cons.

Pros: you were going to get to see the boys’ concert, meet their sweet fans, and get some quality time in with your friend Aspen. Cons, well con: you didn’t know how you were going to face Daniel.

Not wanting to think about that yet, you begin getting ready for bed and after a long shower, you throw on some pajamas and hop in bed with your phone, checking your social media for the first time today.

Since the fans found out about you and Daniel’s friendship, your social media following grew immensely and although you were extremely grateful, it was impossible for you to keep your notifications on all day if you wanted to focus on anything else.

The second turned them on, your phone instantly blew up, all of the mentions and birthday messages from today coming at you all at once. As you were scrolling through Instagram, a tagged picture caught your eye and you clicked on it immediately, sighing when you saw it was a picture of you and Daniel together.

It was taken just after a long hike on the Angel’s Rest Trail, you and Daniel sweaty and smiling with pride as you faced the camera hand in hand. Your eyes scan the caption quickly and you discard your phone before you have a chance to react to it.

@seaveydaniel: Happy Birthday (Y/N). I love you more than you will ever know. His caption was the last thing you read before falling asleep.

“You coming (Y/N)?” Aspen asks softly as she leads the way back to the tour bus. “I don’t know if I should, I am kind of tired.” you lie and she frowns before linking your arm with hers.

“Oh come on, you can at least hang out with us for a bit before we go to the hotel. I can’t stand being the only girl around these morons!” she laughs and you join her.

“Okay, okay.” you agree and you walk arm on arm to the bus, the two of you in no hurry as you would probably be waiting on the boys for a bit anyway. “So did you enjoy tonight?” Aspen asks when you’re able to finally sit down. Your mind begins to swarm and you nod before answering.

“Yeah it was a lot of fun. Nice to finally get to see the boys on stage.” you smile and she nods before whipping out her phone. The second Aspen diverts her attention from you, you let your face fall as you go over the events of the concert and the after party.

The concert was great. The boys did well and you were delighted to meet some of the sweet fans. The only thing you wish you could have changed was Daniel’s attitude on stage.

You could tell he was hurting and even though he kept his signature smile, his eyes told another story every time they met yours in the crowd. The after party was better, you and Aspen got to relax a bit and watched as the fans talked and laughed with the boys.

Every once in a while though fans would approach you, bombarding you with questions and comments about you and Daniel’s relationship, asking things like “Are you and Daniel dating?” and “Can the two of you just make it official already?”.

You answered them with a forced smile, hoping that Daniel couldn’t hear them from his spot across from you. Overall though, it was a great experience and you were glad that you didn’t back out; and you hoped that Daniel felt the same way.

“Here they come!” you hear Bill exclaims and you sit up to see the boys through the bus window, waving their final goodbyes to the fans before finally making their way onto the bus.

“Hellooo ladies!” Jack greets, waving to you and Aspen before making himself comfortable on the seat next to Aspen. “Hey Jack.” you laugh as he pushes Aspen over to make more room for himself before greeting the rest of the guys.

“Great job tonight, you guys blew me away!” you cheer and the boys all thank you before sitting down as well. “I’m so sweaty its disgusting.” Jonah groans before excusing himself to the bunk area to put on a new shirt.

“So what was your favorite song of the show?” Zach asks as he and Corbyn sit down to join you, Corbyn’s eyes don’t leave his phone and you assume he’s talking with Christina.

“Hmm. It’s hard to choose, but I would say ‘We The Party’.” you tell Zach with a smile. “I like that one too.” Daniel pipes up from his spot in the doorway and you notice that he’d been keeping his distance.

“I know you do.” you smile at him but he doesn’t quite return it. Instead, he silently sits across from you in the spot next to Jack. “What was your favorite?” you ask softly, turning your attention back to Zach.

“I would have to say 'All My Love’. I love that one.” he says and before you have a chance to continue the conversation, Daniel is chiming in again. “Mine’s 'Free’.” Daniel says loudly and you smile at him as he continues.

“Are you going to ask me why?” he asks and you hesitate before doing so. “Why is 'Free’ your favorite Daniel?” “Because it reminds me of this girl I know.” he mumbles, sitting back on the couch and you roll your eyes at his childishness.

Petty Daniel was definitely your least favorite Daniel. “Hey someone scoot over so I can sit.” Jonah whines from just a few feet away from you and you’re glad he could stop the conversation between you and Daniel before it got as heated as last time.

“You can sit here Jonah. I should get going anyway.” you say as you stand up and grab your purse, earning a few whines and waves from the rest of the group.

“Bye (Y/N), I’ll text you in the morning!” Aspen beams and you smile at her before saying your goodbyes to the boys. “I’ll walk you out.” Daniel says suddenly and you try to hide the shock on your face as you nod softly.

Aspen shoots you a look and glare at Jack immediately, of course Daniel told Jack about the kiss, and of course Jack had told Aspen. You grit your teeth as you and Daniel get through a group of fans who were still outside.

“Hey guys I can take pictures with you in just a minute, just let me get (Y/N) to her car safely.” Daniel says sweetly as he puts a hand on the small of your back, something he always did when you’d been caught in a crowd.

When you finally reach the car, he pulls away and you turn to face him as you unlock your car and throw your purse inside. “Thanks Daniel.” you practically whisper, fiddling with one of the belt loops on your jeans as you wait in silence for him to respond.

“Of course. And am sorry I didn’t call you back (Y/N), Its just-” he starts but you finish for him. “Its hard for you. I get it.” you smile softly and he nods before rubbing the back of his neck.

After a few minutes of standing in silence, Daniel speaks up. “Well, I’ll call you tomorrow before the flight?” he asks and you smile before giving him a small hug. “The show was amazing Daniel. Thanks for inviting me.” you say before getting in the car, Daniel sending you off with a thump on the trunk.

The next morning, the incessant buzzing of your phone wakes you and you answer it with a yawn. “Hello?” you say groggily and Eric’s voice greets you on the other side of the line.

“Morning (Y/N!)” Eric beams and you return his greeting as cheerily as humanly possible. “I’m sorry did I wake you?” he asks sarcastically and you can tell he’s smiling. "Seeing how its currently ten in the morning, yes.“ you groan.

You’d never a morning person and it was something that took Daniel a while to get used to. You smile to yourself as you think of Daniel but quickly turn your attention back to Eric.

"So what do you want to do today?” you ask, finally getting out of bed for the day. “Breakfast?” he asks and you sigh before correcting him. “Brunch.” Eric’s laugh echoes over the phone and you join him before the two of you agree to go to brunch at eleven.

Once you’re off the phone, you head to the bathroom to shower and do your makeup. After that, you rummage through your closet and settle on a v-neck spaghetti strap dress with a floral pattern and a cardigan to match.

Twirling the ends of your hair in the mirror, you sit down at your vanity and deal with it too, fixing it just how you like it. Opening up the drawer of your vanity, the sparkle from Daniel’s bracelet catches your eye and quickly take it in your hands.

As terrible as it may sound, a part of you wishes you were spending the day with Daniel instead of Eric. That didn’t mean that you loved him though, did it? A knock on the front door snaps you out of your thoughts and you slip the bracelet on before grabbing your purse and heading downstairs.

“Morning.” Eric greets you at the door and you smile at him as he leans in for a kiss. For some reason, though, you dodge him and his kiss lands on your cheek. “Good morning.” you say awkwardly before heading to his car side by side.

“Okay so I was thinking that we go to the cafe and get our food to-go and then head to the lake for a picnic?” he asks and you nod slowly. An off feeling goes through you as you think about Daniel’s flight and you try to brush it off but the motion of the car isn’t really helping.

“(Y/N)?” Eric questions and you turn to him with a small smile. “Did you hear what I just said?” he asks, his own smile fading as you shake your head. “No I didn’t sorry. What were you saying?” you ask and he repeats himself about taking you on his parents’ boat sometime.

“Yeah that sounds cool.” you lie as you fiddle with the charm bracelet on your left wrist; you hated sailing ever since you were young. You weren’t sure why, but for some reason, you always got seasick and even thinking about it now made your skin crawl; and if Daniel were here he would laugh at Eric even mentioning it. Daniel…

“Eric, wait.” you surprise yourself by interrupting him mid-sentence and he listens as you continue. “I need you to take me home.” The words were jumbled coming out of your mouth and you weren’t even sure if you meant them, but Eric was.

“This is about Daniel isn’t it?” he asks and you nod shamefully. “I’m so sorry, I don’t know what’s coming over me but I-” “You love him.” he finishes for you and you fall silent at the certainty of his words.

“I don’t know.” you admit softly. “I saw you guys at the party…the kiss.” he almost whispers and your heart sinks. “What? Why didn’t you say anything?” You had no right to be angry with him–what Daniel did was practically all your fault–but you wondered why he would keep this from you, why he would act like nothing had changed between the two of you since that night.

“I know you told him you didn’t feel the same way. I could tell by his reaction. At the time I was glad that you didn’t kiss him back. But now…” he trails off. “Now?” “Now, I don’t know. Its obvious that you have feelings for him, even if you can’t admit it to yourself.” he says and you can’t help but feel sorry for him.

“I’m so sorry Eric. I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.” you apologize but he just smiles. "Its okay. I like you…I really, really like you but Daniel loves you. And a hell of a lot from what I can tell.“ he smiles and you can’t stop the pink from running to your cheeks.

"What now?” you ask, your brow furrowing as Eric drives past the cafe you were supposed to get brunch at. “Well its about 11:17,” he says as he looks away from the road for a moment to check his watch. “And Daniel’s flight leaves at what, 11:45?” he asks and you nod slowly, still unsure of what he’s getting at.

“Yes, and?” you question, a smile creeping onto your face at the mention of Daniel’s name. “So we’re going to the airport.” he says matter-of-factly and your smile grows. “Are you serious? You would do that?” you beam at him from the passenger seat.

“For Daniel, no. For you, yes.” he speaks with a smile but you can tell it hurts him to do this. “Thank you so much.” you say, excitement flooding your system as you see the road signs leading to PDX.

As the distance between you and the airport gets smaller and smaller, your stomach turns and you swallow hard to settle it. “Are you alright?” Eric asks and you nod before trying to sort out your thoughts.

If Eric was right about you loving Daniel, why was it so hard for you to grasp the idea? You think to yourself and your excitement turns into pure nervousness as the car comes to a stop in front of PDX.

“You can do this.” Eric says and you smile at him before reaching for the door. “Do you want me to wait or?” he asks and you shake your head. “I can find my way back but thank you. For everything.” you say softly and after giving him a quick kiss on the cheek, you exit the car and begin for the main lobby of the airport.

You’re greeted by a sharply dressed woman with a smile and it hits you that you had absolutely no idea where Daniel would be. “Hi how can I help you?” she asks perkily and you return her smile while you think of how to word your next question.

“Yes, um, can you tell me where the flight from here to Los Angeles boards?” you ask and she looks at you in confusion before you clarify. “It’s scheduled to depart at 11:45.” you add and she looks through a few papers before grinning at you.

“You’re here to see that boy band aren’t you?” she asks accusingly and you decide its better to look like a crazed fangirl than an idiot in love. “Yes. I love Why Don’t We so much!” you play along, laughing to yourself at how she rolls her eyes playfully.

“Down that hall and up the stairs. You better hurry before they’re swarmed with girls!” she says and you thank her before following her directions, the butterflies in your stomach getting stronger as you ascend the stairs to see a group of girls huddled up in a circle, the boys’ heads just barely poking out of the crowd.

As you watch Daniel with the fans, your heart swells and it finally hits you that you are madly in love with this boy. Everything about him is just so perfect–the way he acts with his fans, the way he is passionate about everything he does, the way he makes you feel–all of his amazing qualities hit you at once and you decide its time to make your move.

Walking slowly, in an effort to blend in with the crowd, you hope that he can’t see you as he poses a few pictures and as the few fans who were your armor leave to make their way toward Jonah, you inch closer to him, staying behind him before speaking up.

“Can I get a picture as well?” you ask innocently and he turns around quickly, a big smile on his face. “(Y/N)!” he exclaims, pulling you in for a bear hug. “I was just about to call you but then the fans got here and I-"

"It’s fine, I understand.” you cut him off, eager to get him alone so you can finally tell him how you feel. “Are you in a rush?” he asks worriedly and you shake your head before pulling him off to the side, a handful of fans gawking at the two of you while another handful give you the death glare for stealing him away.

“No I just need to talk to you alone.” you say as you continue to lead walk with him, your hand pulling him closely behind you before you stop in an empty hallway.

“What’s going on?” he asks once you’re finally alone and you sigh as you think of how you’re going to say this. “Daniel I…” His eyes search yours and you swallow hard, your heart pounding as he patiently waits for you to finish.

“DanielIloveyou.” you say and his emotion is unreadable for a moment as he processes the words that just came out of your mouth. His brow furrows and you realize that he may not have even heard you.

“Daniel I-” before you can repeat yourself, Daniel’s lips are on yours and even though its second time your lips collided, it felt like the first and the feeling in your stomach told you that it would be like this every single time.

“Say it again.” he begs as you part from him, and you smile before before repeating those three magic words. “I love you too (Y/N). So much.” he says before pulling you in for another kiss.

The fans begin to flood the once vacant hallway, their chatter and phone screens filling the room but you don’t mind. For now its just you and him…and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

So I’m uploading this part a little earlier than I participated because I figured that there was nothing integral to the plot in it; I can afford to upload it without fear of needing to go back and change things. Thanks to @agentpiku and @thefallenbibliophilequote for the comments last time, and to @imagine-that-marvel and @marveliskindacool for beta-reading. Enjoy my darlings!

‘The Tower’ (Part 2)

Part 1

On the outskirts of the city, a great distance away from the main city and its glittering palace, lay a small greening village of no more than 600 peoples. The town’s inhabitants were hardened and hearty on account of the toil and labour that had allowed their home to prosper. Such success was granted in part by the vast forest that lay adjacent…

Thanks to the resources provided by the neighbouring woods, a thriving economy had been cultivated within the town. The first mile of forest alone held plenteous income for the town. A particularly large river that passed the edge provided ample fishing opportunities. Bushes bristling with berries and root vegetables were easily found. Even veins of metal ores and precious stones were locatable within a day of dedicated searching.

The only way out of the city was via a main road that also navigated the thick trees. Carriages moved through it on a daily basis, bringing goods to and from the village. Despite the traffic on this path, nobody ever dared to venture away from it, for fear of what terrors the shadowy thicket held.

Everyone in the village had a role. If you were strong, you felled wood. If you were fast, you hunted. If you were patient, you herded cattle.

It was probably why you felt so isolated.

Kiaronna: The Fandom’s Darling

AO3 Profile

If I were to name one writer who can take my emotions extremely high or extremely low, I would name kiaronna. Her ideas for stories may not be that intricate, but the way she writes them out effectively evokes emotions in readers.

Kiaronna (@kiaronna) has written ten works for the Yuri on Ice fandom. The most popular one, Just Hold On (We’re Going Home), has garnered over 2,500 kudos as of date. It’s an AU where Yuuri is the one who remembers what happened in the banquet in Sochi while Viktor forgets about it. It’s a simple switch on who remembers and who forgets, but the way kiaronna executes the story–showing the things that happened because of the banquet and how it affected the characters’ mindset and emotions–was all flawlessly done.

And since the story is written in Yuuri’s POV, angst definitely comes with it. Imagine: Yuuri, anxious as he is and remembering doing what he thinks are embarrassing things in front of his long-time idol. It’s one hell of “feels ride,” so you gotta be ready.

But aside from writing heart-wrenching stories, kiaronna, unexpectedly, is also good in writing humor/comedy. She has a fic entitled The Katsudon Diaries, and it’s about Yuuri trying to seduce Viktor off the ice by following everyone’s [terrible] advices.  It’s a WIP with currently four chapters in out of twenty, and has garnered over 400 kudos as of date.

The humor is really really well-written. There was never a chapter where I couldn’t stop laughing at Yuuri’s failed attempts and at Viktor’s text messages with Chris, talking about the things he did with Yuuri but not actually realizing that Yuuri had been trying to seduce him. The Katsudon Diaries is fun and light, but it makes you want to hide your face in your hands whenever Yuuri does something embarrassing. It’s a very enjoyable read, especially after reading kiaronna’s angsty fics–a quick remedy to the ache brought by such fics.

If requests are open, is it possible to have a Lance imagine where you guys land on a planet where it rains (or maybe you guys are back on Earth/au where you never went to space - whichever works best for you 😊) and you guys are just having a chilled out evening in his room with cuddles, quiet conversations and lazy kisses while listening to the rain in the background because that is everything I need in life tbh (I'm sorry this is super long 😅)

Mod Enki here! Thanks for sending in your ask it was super fun to write and super cute! I hope I did it some justice.

Somehow, out of the pure luck of the stars, the castle ship had managed to land on a planet with a similar atmosphere to Earth. It was nice, although humid. When you landed it was clear that there was a storm brewing. It was hard to mask your excitement because rain made for good lazy days. And the fact that it could be actual rain and not some crazy raining glass or acid crap meant that it would actually sound like rain. Pure and simple water. Nothing could set your soul more at ease. So when you heard the first pitter patters of water hitting the outside of the castle ship you were ready. Gathering all the snacks, blankets, and pillows you could you headed to your boyfriend’s room. There was no doubt he was happy about the rain, too. Anything that reminded him of life back on Earth was very therapeutic for him. So it didn’t surprise you that when you entered his room that he was gazing longingly out the window. He was watching the rain as it ran down the glass window in varying streams and patterns. It must’ve been so enrapturing because he didn’t turn to acknowledge you when you came into the room. Puffing out your cheeks you threw everything onto the bed before taking a pillow and launching at his head. There was a garbled noise before you launched another one, hitting the mark again.

“Lance! Stop being so melancholy for a minute and spend some time with me will you?” You said. He threw a pillow back at you but it missed by a mile. “Come on Mr. Sharpshooter, you can do better than that.”

There was a whine as Lance rolled onto the floor from his spot by the window. It grew muffled as he log rolled to the point where his face was smushed on the floor. You snorted and strolled over to him.

“Get your lazy butt up.” You said, but instantly got a slightly louder muffled whine from the blue paladin.

Since he obviously wasn’t going to come and sit on the bed with you, it was time to move the bed to him. You went back to the bed and started throwing the rest of the pillows and blankets at him. You even started throwing the little water pouches you had brought with you at him, even though he was probably too padded by all the blankets and pillows that he couldn’t feel them. When everything was over in a giant heaping mess of things you jumped into it ignoring the loud groan emanating from the bottom of the pile. Humming you wiggled around until you could feel the poor soul buried under everything moving around. And just as well, it didn’t take him long to rise up from the depths and grab you like some sort of jaws movie. You yelled protests and he brought you down into the covers and into his arms, both of you laughing the entire time.

“You thought you were safe up there but nothing can escape Lance!” He declared. You squealed when he went down to lift up your shirt and blow raspberries on your stomach leading you to nearly kicking his head off.

“No fair! Now you’re just playing dirty.” You laughed trying to shove him away from your exposed belly. It took a few tries but you finally got him to detach from you and allow you both to collapse into your own giggling fits. It didn’t take long for Lance to slither back over to you and pull you into a nice loving embrace.

Just as you thought you were done, he pressed his lips to your cheek and blew a raspberry there, too. You squeaked and spat out breathy protests in between laughs trying to say how you didn’t come all the way over to his room just to be assaulted like this. It was all mostly drowned out by your laughs, of course.

“How about that for spending time with you?” Lance asked with a cheeky grin. You flicked his nose, trying to get his grin to break but to no avail.

“I don’t know, I wouldn’t call assaulting me like that, “spending quality time” with me.” You said with a mock hurt expression.

“Oh whatever.” He said giving you a quick squeeze. “You know you loved it.”

“I do like the attention. But let’s try something else.”

You pulled him down into a short and simple kiss making him hum in delight. When you ended it, however, he quickly went in for another but this time something more deep. It last a good few minutes as your lips melded together in sync, breathing through your noses to get it to last that little bit longer. It wasn’t the strongest kiss though, walking the line between lazy and firm. You enjoyed it immensely as well as Lance probably did. He wasn’t done when the two of you broke off however and proceeded to smother your face with kisses. Going for your cheeks, forehead, nose, eyes. You loved it and were reduced to a blushing and laughing mess.

It didn’t take long for him to settle down though, and the two of you were stuck in each other’s embraces. You snuggled into him and listened to the gentle waves of rain that continued to poured onto the castle ship. For a second, everything seemed still and you could’ve sworn that you were back home without a care in the world instead of in a giant ship with every single problem of the universe weighing on your shoulders. You hugged him tighter, letting out a sigh, completely content with everything for the first time in what seemed like months.

Lance’s soft, and slightly raspy voice from laughing so much, brought you back to reality. You could only hum in response but it was enough to assure him that you were listening.

“Did I ever tell you about the time when I was back in the garrison, when I was dared to sneak into the instructor’s lounge and steal all of the instructor’s food?” He asked. You chuckled and informed him that no, he had not told you this. “Well, this one kid dared me since all Hunk and I ever did was complain about the garrison lunches that they had. I nearly got caught about ten times! But thanks to Hunk’s distraction I managed to bag all the lunches and get out of there disguised as a trash guy! We had to eat it all in one go though, because it wasn’t going to take long for everyone to notice. But the funny part is, I said that if I managed to pull it off, he’d have to shave his eyebrows, legs, and half of his head. Get this though! His leg hair never grew back, and neither did his eyebrows!”

“Okay, now you’re just messing with me. There’s no way his leg hair and eyebrows didn’t grow back.” You mumbled into his shirt.

“I’m completely serious! Ask Hunk, or even Pidge! They’ll tell you.” Lance defended himself.

“Fine, I’ll go ask them right now!” You declared trying to get up.

“Noooo you gotta stay here in cuddle more with meeee!” Lance whined. He defiantly tugged you back down and back into his arms. You gave up and snuggled back into him.

“Okay, but you have to tell me more stories. You always have the best ones.” You said reaching over and grabbing a bag of snacks.

For the rest of the night, Lance told you all the stories he could think of from his misadventures in his life. You listened intently for as long as you could, but ultimately you couldn’t keep your eyes open and yourself awake for long. When you had dozed off, Lance was in the middle of one of his stories, going on about the time he accidentally super glued his hand to a bike handle he was trying to put back on the actual bike. He didn’t notice you had dozed off until he finished and noticed the way your breathing had changed. For a while he just watched you, gently running a hand through your hair until he too, fell into the grips of sleep all while the rain kept its steady rhythms of white noise.

dan and phil play the yasuhati singing challenge: a summary

first of all can i just say i’ve been hoping for a singing video literally since the day the gaming channel was announced and if they use this as an opportunity to take the piss i’m unstanning so fast

i can’t even say anything about the intro because… okay dan

they’d best try to sing properly

i can take this game as long as they properly try to sing

“the game that almost got our neighbours to call the police and we’re back doing it again because we don’t care anymore” because you’re moving??????????

“after watching the footage i didn’t know i could physically make those noises”

they went through the comments to look for songs,,,, you all best not have let me down

i already have firm ideas about the most popular requests

“this is going to be a disaster, i hope you’re ready for the best and worst video you may ever see in your life.”

phil sings my heart will go on in the shower

dan’s face suggests he is well aware of that fact

“do i have to sing it in key?” // “you have to try”

i’m going to be mad if he doesn’t try

after the first note i am already mad and dan is already traumatised

“i could never open the door, celine dion is dead”

“if i was on the titanic and someone was singing that, i’d push you off” i’m with dan on this one sorry phil

the top comment is to sing dan’s diss track

is this actually happening

oh my god it is

okay people let’s all sit back and enjoy this

phil mouths along with him that’s so cute

i am also mouthing along with him as i assume you are too but phil is cuter than all of us

freakishly tool

you look like a noodle, you’ve got hair that was cool in 2007 and wet you just look like a noodle

he’s just in a noodle state of mind it seems

i’m sad phil didn’t do his wink at the shipping with friend line

he fails the game during the reasons why dans a fail rap,,, honestly i relate that’s the one part i can never do either

subtle boaster dan is back

oh god danger men at work

people,,,, thank you but also why

“tatinof isn’t over yet!” dan pls

dan is mouthing the words along with phil this time

whilst also doing little shovey forward hand movements

dan struggles to contain his laughter and phil shushes him truly iconic

phil goes wrong and dan can’t help but correct him

dan’s doing his exaggerated crying face that he does in main channel videos i think he’s physically cringing

dan’s hair is particularly fluffy and i am living for it

why has phil’s voice suddenly gone squeaky

“phil you need to work on your subtlety. you go straight full loudness”

stop talking over each other please i’m begging you it’s incredibly hard to summarise when you do this

“the phil without a chill”

“i’m so sick of dan watching remixes of this song, it’s all i hear in this apartment” maybe you shouldn’t spend every waking moment in the same room then pal

their collab attempt ends just as soon as ig begins

the ‘help me’ dan says in the middle of his 'singing’ accurately represents me right now trying to summarise the damn thing

there are no words for this

“i feel like the police are on their way” honey you’ve made worse noises on a louder scale trust me you’re fine

shout out to the shaved sides though hello

they don’t know the neighbour who’s on the other side of the office wall

“it could be a bedroom…” // “rip that person’s marriage”

“i feel like we should never do this again” i agree

“that’s the end of this channel, maybe” well you brought it upon yourselves if it is

“give us a thumbs up if you enjoyed our beautiful tones” how dare you mock me

“less screamy content”

“hope you’re having a good day and your ears aren’t broken” no but my heart and trust is

While Lord of the Rings imo becomes an overall better and richer and more substantial book after one has read The Silmarillion, et al, it does feel like it trades off something in…scope? space? expanse? openness? possibility? suggestion? In LOTR-ignorant-of-the-Silm there is no or very limited explanation on just what the hell all those references to various historical events, or glimmers of sublime spiritual transcendence, or surges of inexplicable significant imagery, or half-told songs of long-ago legends and mostly-alien concepts, or glimpses of the strange and magic and inhuman and otherworldly, are about. It just is, and it feels right, and it means something, but the full understanding is beyond one’s grasp. And this is honestly one of the best aspects of the book. Even in the Appendices where there is more explanation, it strongly comes across that this information is distilled into mainly just the plot-relevant details while only just barely brushing the edges of relevatory wonder, giving the entire world of Middle Earth an enormous, limitless, labyrinthine, enchantment-soaked quality that seems to hold so much density and variety in information that no one could know it all, and therefore there are huge swathes of reality that are a complete and utter tantalizing shrug and fair game for the imagination.

The Silmarillion is also vastly incomplete, yet it doesn’t feel the same type of incomplete. It’s got the “ok, I can easily wring 50K words of elaboration out of that 4 sentence summary,” type of incomplete in spades, but unlike Lord of the Rings or its Appendices, it does not show glimpses of or gesture towards an expanse of universe beyond the veil of “here are a few of the plot-relevant realities of this world, there’s a untold mountain of other ones too, but that’s a long story, and even I only know a very little bit of it.” It instead gives off a vibe that suggests - falsely! - that the stuff that is spelled out in the text comprises a more-or-less sufficiently complete working summary of the universe and its contents, and the suggestion that any elements or events or peoples or concepts or things or stories that may exist or may have occurred outside of its scope (or inside of the enormous gaps in both the maps and the timelines where there is no or very sparse information, within its scope) are either unimportant, irrelevant, or just more of the same, and therefore tends to make the fictional universe feel limited by the bounds of the existing explanations.

This feeling sort of makes 0 sense because the Silm touches on even more ideas than LOTR, but I guess it’s kind of like, if you’re on the surface of the water and you see an iceberg, you’re very aware that most of the iceberg is underwater and you’re only seeing the tip. But if you dove down to see the underwater portion of the iceberg, it might be really difficult to remember that you only saw the surfaces of the underwater portion, and not all the tons of ice deeper inside the chunk, and that you can’t actually say “I saw the whole iceberg.”

There’s one type of false circumscribing which is “nothing important happened when we weren’t looking” and/or “if we didn’t observe it change, it hasn’t changed during the 6,000 years we weren’t looking.” And a second type, about the existing contents of the fictional world - ideas, histories, powers, peoples, creatures, myths, cultures, Just So Stories, backstories, spiritual concepts, social concepts, powers and phenomena. And when some stuff that exists doesn’t fit into the pattern of the things that are explained through the explicit world-origins (eg, Tom Bombadil, obvs, but a lot of more subtle things too), the tendency is to ignore it and assume it either a) doesn’t really affect anything, or b) is a rare weird outlier – rather than assume its existence signals that the contents of the world have a lot more to them than what the small amount of existing plot-relevant metaphysical and historical explanations have clarified. The Silm does contain multitudes of possibilities outside its lines, anything from key events and concepts that affect the characters’ lives, to trajectories of change regarding societal epochs or prejudices or technology or individual character development, to aesthetics or setting/atmosphere/flavor and quantity of magic-ness. But unlike LOTR it is less helpful in invoking the awareness of this, somehow, I suppose since its style is so explanatory that it can feel like it’s a tell-all, which it isn’t, in-universe, and I don’t think Tolkien ever meant it to be, out-of-universe.

anonymous asked:

Do you think Jon and Daenerys will have a healthy relationship?

Hi, anon! Thanks so much for this ask. Yes, I do think their relationship will be healthy, and there are so, so many reasons for it that I’d love to gush about here.

1.       Troubled Pasts

Jon and Dany both had experiences in their childhoods that shaped their perception of society and other people in similar ways.

As a bastard Jon was viewed and treated as inferior at Winterfell during his youth. Despite Ned’s love we can see that this had a profound effect on Jon’s personality and led to his later self-doubt and “broody” attitude.

From the beginning of AGoT we see from Cat’s treatment of Jon and the fact that he is barred from the high table at the feast honoring Robert that Ned’s attentive parenting, Robb’s friendship, and Jon’s close, loving relationship with Arya aren’t enough to make him truly feel like an equal member of the Stark family.

Similarly, Dany is told by Viserys from a young age that they are royalty deserving of a better life. He tells her about their home and family, but she never gets to experience any of this. Instead she is shuffled around from place to place, never allowed to feel secure and content in a real home. The only constant in her life is Viserys and he is abusive.

Things don’t really get better for them from there. Jon is allowed to go to The Wall and no one aside from Benjen even attempts to warn him what his life there will be like, and even Benjen’s warning is lukewarm. Tyrion gives him a more realistic picture of what the Watch is but by that point Jon doesn’t want to turn back from his decision.

So as a young man Jon is thrown into a hard life in one of the most unforgiving climates of this universe surrounded by people who resent him for his family name—a family name he doesn’t actually get to reap the benefits of out in the world. Thorne calling him “Lord Snow” sets him apart from his brothers and puts a target on his back from the beginning. But Jon overcomes this and finds common ground with his brothers, starting with Sam, so that he can develop friendships with his new companions.

When she is sold to the dothraki, Dany is also an outcast. Physically she sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the dothraki and she can’t speak a word of their language. She’s a young girl and a virgin who is given to an enormous, intimidating brute of a man who rapes her. In spite of this she ingratiates herself to him and the rest of the dothraki to try and make the best of her situation, learning their language and earning the friendship of her handmaids and the love of her husband.

2.       Similar Worldviews

These experiences gave both Jon and Dany a look at what it is like to be a marginalized person in Planetos. Class discrimination in Jon’s case and misogyny in Dany’s show them both how hard it is to make a place for yourself in the world if the circumstances of your birth happen to put you outside the ranks of the privileged nobility.

Because of that they both make it their business to help the downtrodden and underprivileged people in their respective regions. Jon doesn’t execute Ygritte when ordered to do so, partially because it goes against his sensibilities to behead a woman, but also because he hasn’t fully bought into the prejudices of his society. And his relationship with Ygritte allows him to see that the Free Folk are just people like him.

So while it’s true that Jon needs the wildlings in the war against the White Walkers, he also brings them South to bring them under the protection of The Wall because he believes in equality and as someone who was treated as less than because of his birth, he understands to some extent what it’s like to be a wildling. And supports equal treatment for them.

Across the world, Dany’s experiences with the dothraki made her a champion for women in the largely patriarchal culture in Essos. She tries to defend the women from the shepherd village, even though Mirri Maz Duur thinks her efforts are too little, too late.

But when Drogo dies and the strong of his khalasar desert her, Dany is just as happy to have the allegiance of the women, children, and elderly who are left to her when the others leave. She wants to care for people who can’t care for themselves, and continues this crusade in the liberation of the slave cities.

She was essentially sold to Drogo as a slave and as such she cares deeply about the atrocity of slavery, refusing to sail for Westeros until Ghiscari slavery has been abolished entirely. She also liberates the women of the dosh khaleen, who are living in their own sort of slavery under the authority of the khals until Dany frees them.

Jon’s egalitarian views resulted in the men who are supposed to serve and obey him murdering him instead. Dany’s similar choices led to her own subjects attempting to murder her.

So we can see that equality and freedom are important values to both Jon and Dany. And both of them faced doubts and resistance from not only their enemies but their friends and allies, too, on their quests to improve the quality of life for the wildlings, the dothraki, and the slaves.

So in one another, Jon and Dany will finally find another person who 1. Understands what it is like to be a leader/ruler 2. Understands what it is like to have to make the unpopular decisions and 3. Is willing to put themselves on the line to help the least fortunate people in the world.

They also both know when violence or drastic measures are necessary. We’ve seen Jon execute people against his own hesitation on the matter, with Janos and then Thorne, Olly, and the other traitors. This is something he obviously struggled with but he still did it because it is what needed to be done. At the same time, we know that Dany has had to execute people who have challenged her rule, a rule that keeps people out of the chains of slavery. She was forced to execute Mossador and make an example of the former master who she fed to Viserion and Rhaegal, and while I think she learned from this mistake later, she crucified the masters for their crucifixion of the children. So both of them have experience with making the tough choices and facing the consequences.

This is very important for two people who are in positions of power when it comes to their relationship. It is essential that they share these values if their relationship is going to work.

3.       Important Differences/Yin and Yang

But I am not here to try and say that it will all be perfect. Jon and Dany have a lot of differences in personality. There is a reason we often look to them as the ice and fire of the series, besides the obvious reasons of their family names, the cold and hot climates they hail from, etc.

Dany has the fire, passion, and also the hot temper. She is impulsive and quick to anger. But her passion also means that she loves deeply and feels happiness just as intensely as she does sadness and rage.

While we have occasionally seen fits of rage from Jon, he is typically more stoic, harder to rile, and more forgiving.

So when Dany wants to go all “fire and blood,” or when Jon doesn’t want to act rashly when she does, we can count on arguments and disagreements. But any healthy couple has these. No one is going to agree 100% of the time, and people often say opposites attract. So Jon’s and Dany’s differences are important, too, because they need to balance each other out.

When Jon is full of doubt, Dany’s surety will push him to action. When Dany acts on emotion, Jon can counsel her and make sure action is warranted. It’s like a yin and yang that I think will work beautifully.

They even look like the yin and yang—Dany with her pale eyes and silver-white hair, often wearing white and pale pastels, while Jon is every bit the man in black. They complement one another in every possible way.

4.         Common Protests

I often see people worry about the incest, but I don’t think we have a real reason to worry about that. As we know, GoT/ASOIAF is set in a fictionalized, fantasy version of medeival Europe where incest was more commonly practiced. But even if that weren’t the case, there is precedent in the series for this kind of incest, and I’m not just talking about Targaryens.

Jon and Dany are nephew and aunt, which is not a particularly close family relation.

In immediate ASOIAF history we see cousin incest that is completely acceptable and not alarming to the family members. Joanna Lannister and Tywin Lannister (Tyrion, Cersei, and Jaime’s parents) were cousins. Rickard Stark and Lyarra Stark (Ned, Brandon, and Lyanna’s parents) were cousins.

Earlier in history Jonnel Stark married his niece Sansa Stark. And Edric Stark married his niece Serena Stark.

In current ASOIAF history Aeron Greyjoy wanted to marry Asha/Yara to her uncle Victarion.

And none of this takes into account the several examples of incest in Targaryen ancestry. Since the Targaryens have strange features and some extra abilities they are not like regular humans and incest does not effect them the way it would normal people so even sibling incest is common for Targaryens (remember Jon and Dany are both Targaryen). It is a misconception that Aerys II represents all modern Targaryens or that all would be mad as he was because of incest.

So I don’t think that this would be an obstacle to Jon’s or Dany’s feelings about the other. If anything they will be elated to have a family to be a part of.

5.       Loneliness

Finally, in spite of how far they’ve come, both Jon and Dany are still lonely and desire companionship. The famous parallel that I see mentioned all the time in the Jonerys fandom comes to mind:

Jon in ASOS:

Jon wondered where Ghost was now. Had he gone to Castle Black, or was he was running with some wolfpack in the woods? He had no sense of the direwolf, not even in his dreams. It made him feel as if part of himself had been cut off. Even with Ygritte sleeping beside him, he felt alone.

Dany in ADWD:

Beneath her coverlets she tossed and turned, dreaming that Hizdahr was kissing her … but his lips were blue and bruised, and when he thrust himself inside her, his manhood was cold as ice. She sat up with her hair disheveled and the bedclothes atangle. Her captain slept beside her, yet she was alone.

Even with Davos and Tyrion as their respective advisers, even with Tormund and Edd and Missandei and Jorah as friends, they still lack something that only they can provide each other—a real partner. Someone who is their equal and who can understand their struggles and support them. We have seen that both Jon and Dany have the capacity for love, real romantic love, not just marriages of convenience or necessity. And when it happens, I think it will absolutely be healthy, and as happy as a relationship can be in the turmoil they are living through currently.

Lastly, it is something that we can believe GRRM is in favor of too based on the years of foreshadowing, discussed here by @oadara.

Thanks for giving me a reason to talk about my faves, anon :)
