“So, uh, what’s been going on with you and Y/n?” Brian asks Shawn from across the pingpong table. The boys were never ones to get deep or gush like girls, but after the way Shawn had been attached at the him to you lately, someone had to ask him about it.

“Nothin’ man, she’s just really cool and funny.” Shawn brushes off, smacking the ball back to Brian, but missing the table completely.

“Yeah, okay. Whatever you say, man.” Brian teases.

The 10 Elements of a MAIN CHARACTER

To all the writers who have ever been told “Your characters have to be three dimensional!” or “They should be well-rounded!” and just felt like saying: “What does that even MEAN?! What goes into a 3-dimensional character? Specifically? And how do you go about creating one?!”

Good news. There’s a way.

Great main characters – heroes, protagonists, deuteragonist, whatever you want to call them – have ten things in common. Ten things that are easily developed, once you know what to create within your character. So no one will ever be able to tell you “needs to be more three dimensional!” ever again. Ha.

1) Weaknesses: Main characters should be flawed, but I’m not saying this because it will make them more realistic (though it will) – I’m saying they need to be flawed because if they’re not, they shouldn’t be a main character. Story is another word for change, or more accurately, character growth. Not character as in “fictional person”, character meaning “heart and soul”. Story is someone’s character changing, for better or worse. Main characters at the beginning of the story are lacking something vital, some knowledge of themselves, some knowledge of how to live a better life, and this void is ruining their lives. They must overcome these weaknesses, if they’re going to become complete, and reach a happy ending. There are two types of weaknesses: Psychological and Moral. Psychological ones only hurt the main character. Moral ones cause the main character to hurt other people. Easy.

2) Goal: Characters exist because they want something. Desiring something, and the fight against opposition for that desire, is the lifeblood of story; and because character is story, it’s also desire that can breathe life into words on a page, and begin the process of creating a real person in a reader’s mind. It’s this ‘desire for something’ that sparks that first connection between reader and character. It makes us think “Well, now I have to find out if this person gets what they want.” This is a powerful link. (How many mediocre movies do we suffer through, when we could easily stop watching, because we’re still trapped by that question of “what happens?”) So if this is powerful enough to keep people watching an annoying movie, imagine how powerful it can be in an excellent story.

Like in Up, the goal is to get the house to Paradise Falls.

3) Want: If the main character wants something, they want it for a darn good reason. Usually, they think that attaining the goal will fill the void they can sense in their lives, the deficiency they can feel, but don’t know how to fix. And they’re almost always wrong. Getting the goal doesn’t help anything; which is why, while pursuing that goal, they discover a deeper need that will heal them. Which brings us to …

4) Need/Elixir: Main characters are missing something, a weakness in their innermost selves is causing them to live a less-than-wonderful life. Through story, these main characters can be healed. Once they discover what’s missing, and accept it, and change the way they live to include this truth they’ve uncovered … they’re healed. Learning this truth, whatever it is, forms the purpose of the story for the main character. The reader, and the character, think the story is about achieving that big tangible goal the premise talks about; really, underneath it all, the story is about someone achieving a big intangible truth, that will ultimately save their life and future. Often, this need is exactly what the character fears or professes to hate.

Like Finding Nemo, where Dory states exactly what Marlin needs to learn.

5) Ghosts:

Not this kind of ghosts.

Ghosts are events in your character’s past which mark the source of their weaknesses and strengths. Because these happened, the character became who they are. All we need to know about backstory are these moments, because who the character became is all we care about. There’s really only one ghost you absolutely need: the source of their moral and psychological weakness. Something happened that knocked the character’s world off kilter, and everything from that moment onward has been tainted by what happened. This moment haunts them (hence the name), and holds them back from uncovering that need that will heal their weaknesses. Pixar are masters of this: the source of Carl being stuck in the past, curmudgeonly, unable of loving anyone new? Ellie dying; his ghost. In Finding Nemo, the source of Marlin being suffocating, protective to the point of being harmful, possessive, and fearful? His wife and 99% of his children being eaten in front of him; his ghost.

6) True Character: These are the strengths, values, convictions, fears, faults, beliefs, worldview, and outlook on life that make the main character who they truly are.

7) Characterization: This is everything on the surface of a main character. The way they look, talk, act, etc. All of this originates from those deeper elements of their being, the strengths, values, ghosts, weaknesses, needs, that make them who they truly are. So often, you can think of this as a facade they’re projecting, a way to shield the the truth about themselves, how they wish to be perceived. The story, and the other characters, are slowly going to see deeper than this characterization, revealing more and more of the reasons it is the way it is.

8) Arc: If the character is going to change from “Incomplete Person” to “Complete Person” there’s going to be a journey they go on to make that possible. The external story, the pursuit of that big tangible goal the premise is about, is causing an inner journey to take place. What they have to do in pursuit of that external goal will apply pressure to those weaknesses, and pressure causes change. This process has seven steps, but if I write it all here this post is going to be obscenely long. So I might wait and give this its own post.

9) Changed Person: Who is the character going to be at the end of this story? They better be different, or else the story didn’t work. How do they show how different they’ve become? What is the moral choice they make, that spins their trajectory from “the future doesn’t look so great” to “happily ever after”? This should be known right away, maybe even before anything else is settled about the character. This gives a distinct end goal, a way to work backwards, a destination in mind that you can navigate towards.

10) Fascination and Illumination: The surface characterization, and the brief glimpses of the true character underneath create curiosity in the reader/audience. What the character says, and the implied subtext beneath the dialogue, creates a puzzle the audience wants to solve. Actions they take work the same way; if the writer indicates there’s deeper motivation behind why a character behaves in the way they do, we buy into solving that mystery right away. We can’t help it. “Who are you really? Why are you the way you are? And how is that going to effect the story?” These are all the unspoken, almost not consciously acknowledged, questions that fascinating characters provoke. Searching out meaning, connecting the dots to find the truth – we can’t resist this. We’re not fascinated by tons of backstory and exposition about a character; we’re fascinated by story, by mystery, by the technique of withholding information and having to interpret and hunt out the truth on our own.  So gradually, the story and the characters will force that character to reveal a little more, and a little more, until we have a complete picture of who this person is. Crucial that this information isn’t told up front. Gradually illuminate it. It’s just like getting to know a real person.

So how does this work in a real character? Let’s take a look at Flynn Rider/Eugene Fitzherbert, because almost everybody has seen that movie.

Moral Weaknesses: He’s selfish. He’s a little greedy. He’s a little rude. He uses his charisma and bravado to keep people at a distance from the real him.

Psychological Weaknesses: Insecurity, fear of vulnerability, feels like the real him (Eugene) would be unwanted, unlovable, and have nothing – just like when he was an orphaned kid. Also, he doesn’t know who he wants to be, what he wants to live for.

Goal: Flynn wants to get that crown. So he has to get Blondie to see the floating lights, so she’ll give it back to him, and then they can part ways as unlikely friends.

Want: Why does he want the crown? What does it mean for him? He actually states it (reluctantly) in song: “I have dreams like you, no really. Just much less touchy feely. They mainly happen somewhere warm and sunny. On an island that I own, tanned and rested and alone. Surrounded by enormous piles of money.” He senses there’s something off in his life, something is missing. But he mistakenly believes this missing piece is money, which will allow him to buy a lonely island, where he can live out his days as Flynn and no one will ever know Eugene.

Need: “All those days chasing down a daydream. All those years living in a blur. All that time never truly seeing, things the way they were. Now she’s here, shining in the starlight. Now she’s here, suddenly I know. If she’s here, it’s crystal clear, I’m where I’m meant to go.” He wants a crown … he needs to fall in love with Rapunzel. He needs to love something more than himself, and find out that love isn’t something to fear and push away. He needs to abandon the 'Tales of Flynnagin Rider’ ambition, and get a more worthwhile, new dream.

Ghost: The source of all of his weaknesses can be linked to his “little bit of a downer” childhood as an orphan. Interestingly, he isn’t aware of another facet of that ghost, and Rapunzel points it out to him. “Was he a thief too?” she asks. He looks taken aback, before answering “Uh, no.” Something’s gone wrong. The choices he’s making are not living up to that original role model.

Characterization: Flynn’s charming, funny, smart, charismatic, and arrogant (in a somehow charming sort of way). He’s also rude, contemptuous, and sarcastic. All traits that help him keep up that 'swashbuckling rogue’ facade, and push people away from the real him.

True Character: Underneath all that, he’s a Disney prince. That pretty much sums it up.

Changed Person: “Started going by Eugene again, stopped thieving, and basically turned it all around.” He started the story as the guarded and evasive Flynn, he ends as the selfless and thoroughly-in-love Eugene.

Fascination and Illumination: Imagine if everything about Flynn had been told, right up front. We know he’s an orphan, we know he’s upheld a fake reputation, we know he’s a kind and loving guy underneath it all, we even know about his “tales of Flynnagin” childhood dream. You know what happens? We like him … but we’re not interested in him. There’s nothing we need to find out. There’s no curiosity. And if there’s no curiosity, and nothing being illuminated, your story’s not going anywhere. So instead, we find out – alongside Rapunzel – more about Flynn as the story progresses. And that is how it should be.

So!

Developing characters in this way, I’ve found, really reduces worries about how “well-rounded” and three dimensional I’ve made them. They feel real to me. And besides helping me create characters, this ten element technique has also let me analyze characters I like, which is strangely fun. It’s a great way to figure out why a character works, what causes them to be so effective, and how you can go about creating them yourself.

Yeah, I’m a bit of a nerd.

But if you want, try it out. Develop a character. Analyze a character. You might find it as useful/fun as I do.

okay so i know you already dislike sharon needles, but i have seen people bringing her up and i wanted to just ask you if you could post about some bad stuff shes done, so i have a reference, thank you so much!!!

firstly, here sharon is, black facing:

next we have sharon sporting the confederate flag and a swastika shirt:

has said the word n**ga on stage countless times and wrote n–ger when signing a fan poster:

sharons defense of the use of the words ni**er and ni**a, was literally this, and this is a direct fucking quote, no joke:

The other night me and a couple of my friends went out to have a good time, and there’s this young thing. I call her a “thing” because, you know, I don’t know how to tip-toe around gender rules or queer politics. I’m 30 years old, rich, and famous; I don’t have to deal with that shit anymore, you know what I mean? So we’ll just call them “him”/“her”/“thing,” whatever. And you know she really finds my shows offensive. … So anyway she got upset that I paint myself brown, that I would use language that she found offensive. … She made me an unnecessary poster child for post-racial change.“

an actual fucking quote, here is my source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/brandon-thomas/sharon-needles-racist-aft_b_1473057.html?ir=Australia

DO APPROPRIATE RESEARCH ON ANYTHING YOU ARE UNCERTAIN ABOUT.

Particularly, though, I’m going to talk about how I’m noticing some people obviously aren’t doing their homework for DRUGS AND ALCOHOL. This isn’t really offensive like getting mental illness or cultural stuff incorrect, but it’s still not good because it can be confusing for those who have done the research and/or have firsthand experiences.

Those people have their muses reacting realistically, then some people just write whatever they think is right, then their partner has to work with or around that incorrect information… which in turn can be confusing to the other and it’s a mess, actually.

It can also get misinterpreted by others who don’t know about the subjects either, and since they remember what one person was writing about it, they might feel like they don’t need the research. So it spreads… and therefore more mess.

FOR DRUGS:

  • look up the side effects and the dangers, longterm and short term
  • how they’re measured
  • whether or not it’s actually addictive, plus withdrawal symptoms
  • what possible medical reasons they are meant to be consumed for
  • how it can react with alcohol and other drugs
  • if they’re over the counter or prescribed or made illegally
  • the ways they’re made and/or distributed
  • the ways they can be consumed (orally, inhaled, injected, etc.)
  • different names the drug can be called by
  • relevant laws in the location your character is at if applicable
  • the likelihood of a tolerance being built if its even possible
  • how much your character will be affected relative to their size and amount consumed
  • and possibly even the history of the drug

FOR ALCOHOL:

  • look up a bunch of different kinds, possibly even familiarize yourself with brands
  • understand the standard drink sizes
  • check the alcohol content of the drink your character is consuming
  • the side effects and the dangers longterm and short term
  • how it can react with certain drugs
  • learn about how someone of your character’s size can be affected, how a tolerance is built and how it’s developed by someone of your character’s size
  • definitely research alcoholism and alcohol abuse if your character is supposed to be an alcoholic or heavy drinker
  • make sure you know withdrawal symptoms for the above
  • research alcohol poisoning too
  • and relevant laws in the location your character is at if applicable

If you are writing someone who frequently uses a drug or drinks alcohol, and it’s a lifestyle for them, pretty much everything I just listed for both is necessary to know. Don’t only base stuff on what you’ve seen in shows and movies.

Not all of this information may be possible for you to find. If that happens, or any time you feel particularly uncertain, you can go to someone you know / ask around for someone who would be okay with sharing firsthand experiences. If they aren’t writers themselves, just explain you’re a writer!

AND REMEMBER! Doing research can really help you get to know your characters better, or even your partners’ characters better, and you can develop them much further.

Eight | Yoongi

Scenario: Eight times Min Yoongi tells you he loves you
Genre: Fluff and implied sexual activities
Word Count: 5,154
Author’s Note: Inspired by R. McKinley’s “8 Ways To Say I Love You”

i. when he gets a little too drunk and calls you

The first time he lets those three damn little words escape his mouth, he had been drunk—swimming in the courage that could only be ignited by alcohol. The alcohol had been brought forth by Taehyung as a celebratory congratulations for another successful comeback. The guys had all figured what the hell, they deserved this break, even if the freedom that comes with downing shots only lasts so long, everyone jumped at the chance to let loose for a little while. At least, until the sun rises with the promise of a new day.

Yoongi loses count after his fifth shot, the night slowly blending into shared laughter, jokes, crude memories, and conversations about the short existence of human life. Jimin and Jungkook had drunk lots more than Yoongi—and Yoongi had downed a lot—and the pair of younger boys appear to be having a private conversation of their own. Hoseok is knocked out on the couch. Yoongi barely hears something about pigeons and black holes, before he dismisses himself out of the living room and into the hallway.

He can hear Taehyung, Seokjin, and Namjoon in another room, laughing over the sound of what could be a video game. Barely paying attention to any of that, Yoongi lazily manages to reach for the phone in his back pocket as he stops in the middle of the hallway to dial the only seven digits he’ll ever bother to memorize.

*****

“This is just absolutely ludicrous!” Cheryl Blossom shouted from her seat at the front of the auditorium, her body practically shaking with anger.

Archie elbowed Jughead and smirked imitating the crazy female redhead. That girl needed to be put on some serious medication and fast, she always seemed to be up in arms about something or another. Of course this time her outrage was slightly warranted, it seemed everyone shared similar feelings regarding the announcement Principal Weatherbee was making.

“Calm down children please!” He shouted over the murmuring and shouting of the entire Riverdale class.

Archie dropped his smirk and put on his most serious face “I just don’t see why they have to come here. Is not like any of them go to school anyway.”

Jughead winced at the judgmental tone of his best friend. Yeah Archie could be fairly insulting but he was also incredibly sheltered so he couldn’t really be blamed. Veronica smacked Archie’s arm frowning at him in disdain
“You don’t know them Archie. You can’t group all of them as a whole just because of some bad seeds.”

The huge highly anticipated announcement weatherbee had been talking about for days was that the south side school had been damaged in a fire and all of the students were going to be attending Riverdale until it was fixed.

The south side was the most dangerous part of Riverdale. It was for the lower class, the people who couldn’t afford Riverdale High, it was mainly notorious for its very own gang “The Southside Serpents”. Jughead knew first hand what it was like to live on the south side.

A few years ago his family fell apart. He was left with just his dad. Eventually his father lost his job and they were forced to move to the south side. He had only been there for a few months when Fred Andrews took him in, he loved Jughead like a son and knew how smart the boy was, he wanted him to have a good education and a stable home life. He was forever grateful for the Andrews family, but he still thought about his father all the time, Fred had decided it was best to cut contact until his father could sober up. He hadn’t heard from the man in three years.

Shaking his head and coming to present day he heard weatherbee introducing their newest classmates.

“And please show our new students a very warm Riverdale welcome!” Suddenly the doors opened and in came about sixty teenagers all dressed vastly different than what the school was used to. Messy hair, ripped up jeans, dirty combat boots. They were all dressed like Jughead.

Each of the south side students looked angry, shuffling down the aisle and shooting nasty looks at each Riverdale student who dared make eye contact. One in particular was smirking at Archie’s letterman jacket.

“Reggie Mantle.” Archie grumbled under his breath, his face set in stone. “He’s captain of the Southside football team, Chuck says they play dirty. I’ve never played them every time we go to play, Chuck gets into some kind of fight.”
Veronica moved closer to Archie and he threw an arm over her shoulder.

Almost like Jughead was in a movie, his eyes were drawn to the very last girl in the group, she was moving lazily, her hands shoved into the little black leather jacket she wore, the snake shaped S displayed proudly on her back, a sure sign she was a part of the infamous Serpents. She was absolutely beautiful though, Jughead couldn’t look away. Her honey blonde hair was hanging low on her back, the messy curls wild and smooth, she wore skin tight blue jeans and black combat boots. Her skin was a gorgeous olive color and her face was makeup free. The most striking thing about her was her piercing green eyes fanned by heavy dark lashes.

“Betty, I swear to god you walk like a damn turtle.” The long haired boy in front of her was keeping pace with her lazy stroll.

Her name was Betty. Suddenly her bright green eyes locked on his and she quirked an eyebrow, a curious expression on her face. Jughead swallowed heavily, trying to keep his laid back carefree facade. She was looking at him like she knew him, only breaking eye contact when her long haired friend pulled her by the hand.

Everyone made way as Betty walked through them all, almost as if she were Noah parting the Red Sea, she was respected, that much was obvious. They all took seats in the available spots in the front of the auditorium. As weatherbee went on about how happy everyone was to have them. Veronica leaned over Archie and whispered in jugheads face

“That pretty blonde was totally checking you out. She’s definitely gonna be my new best friend, I’m gonna set you two up. It’s like we’re destined to be best friends.” Veronica clapped excitedly

Kevin nodded from beside him
“You can have the blonde but I want the friend. mister Puerto Rican Fabio is all mine.”

Jughead chucked at his friends antics. All too soon the principal was finishing up and sending them all back to class. As soon as the auditorium doors shut …War begun.

It was a screaming battle the Southside against Riverdale, teens were at each other’s throats and cheerleaders were pitted against cheerleaders while the football players came nose to nose. Suddenly a loud whistle rang out and all the Southside students ceased fighting, causing the Riverdale students to stare in confusion as their opponents backed away.
The gorgeous blonde who had caught his eyes earlier was now making her way through the crowd and standing in front of her classmates.

Cheryl blossom must have sensed the shift in power and moved to stand directly across Betty.

“I don’t know who you think you are, coming to our school and thinking you can get away with whatever you want, but that won’t fly here. This is my school. You may have been important in whatever trash can you ruffians called a school, but things are different here. You’re under my roof.” The riverdale side cheered obnoxiously causing Cheryl to smirk cockily at the girl in front of her.

Betty just smiled lazily and seemed to be waiting for everyone to finish

“We don’t want to fight, none of us want to be here, but we are. And we’re staying. So either you accept that and go about your own business or you cause trouble with my people. The choice is yours. I said we don’t want to fight but I never said we wouldn’t. You threaten us or do anything stupid and you’ll regret it. I’m not afraid of you Red, and I never will be.” With that she turned around, her classmates following, leaving a very quiet Riverdale student body and Cheryl blossom with her jaw on the floor.

Kevin was practically bouncing with excitement as Veronica leaned over and whispered “that was so badass!”

Betty made her way past their little group and once again made eye contact with jughead, this time she shot him half of a smile, the indent of a dimple rising to the surface. Jughead swallowed heavily and Archie slapped a hand to his shoulder, smirking

“You’re in for it now buddy.”

Jughead watched the back of her blonde head walk away and sighed. He most definitely was.

  2. He will judge a station harshly for censoring Steve Miller Band’s “Jet Airliner.”  (”Funky kicks?  What the hell is that?”)
  3. He wonders sometimes if radio stations realize that they’re incriminating themselves when they play Rush’s “Spirit of Radio,” or if they’re idiots like people who play The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” at political rallies.  (”Or people who think R.E.M.’s ‘The One I Love’ is romantic.”  “What?”  “Nothing.”)
  4. He has almost zero patience for most morning radio “talent” because they never.  shut.  up.  (”If I wanted to listen to some douche talk shit all day I’d call Crowley.”)
  5. He understands why the original Springsteen version of “Blinded By The Light” never gets any airplay – it’s terrible – but he wonders what kind of deal Manfred Mann made to get the cover version played all the goddamn time.  Like, the dude is still alive, so it can’t be standard crossroads fare, but something is going on there.  Maybe he should ask Cas.
  6. He will also judge any DJ who mispronounces Led Zeppelin’s “D’yer Mak’er.” (”It’s supposed to be a joke, Sam!”  “I know.  You’ve told me, like, five hundred times.”)
  7. He has a soft spot for the trivia and/or “name that tune” type call-in contests.  He almost never gets to play them – he’s always just passing through – but one of the best meals he’s ever eaten was paid for with a win from a station in Nebraska.  (”That’d be ‘Wild Horses’ by The Rolling Stones…”)
  8. He wishes fervently that stations would play almost any Warren Zevon song that is not “Werewolves of London.”  It’s catchy.  We get it.  For fuck’s sake, at least throw us a “Lawyers, Guns, and Money,” or even “Excitable Boy” now and again.  (”Hey, you want Chinese?  I think I saw a place a couple miles back…”)
  9. He remembers when “We Will Rock You” didn’t automatically segue into “We Are The Champions" and misses it.  Yeah, they go together, but they’re also meaningful on their own. And yeah, he knows that a single came out the year before he was born with the two of them together, but come on.  (”Fucking digital libraries, man…”)
  10. He wonders if all these ads for tractor companies are actually selling any tractors, because that’s fucking wild.  Chainsaws he can see, sure, but large farm equipment?  He’s got no points of reference for that.  He wishes Bobby was still around.  Bobby’d probably know.

Bonus Thing: There’s a “modern rock” (or whatever) station up in Montana called The Moose, and it’s awful.  Every time they catch a case up there, he gives Sam shit about it.  (”Hey Sammy, I think somebody found your iPod.”  “You realize that’d be more insulting if I didn’t like Pearl Jam, right?”)
