what's not fair

i’m reading a very manly 1950s account of a hunt for el dorado but i’m thirty pages in and the narrator has already described his traveling companion as “handsome” 4 times, “extremely handsome” twice, “exceedingly handsome” once, his voice as “quietly husky” and “a husky whisper,” his fingers as long and deft, his body as “tall and cat-like,” and his eyes as some variation of ice-blue at least three times.

just men being dudes. dudes being pals. it’s great. this is great.

apparently there was a telephone booth in the middle of the mojave desert originally meant to service miners and a guy claiming to be sent on a mission from god camped out in it for a month and answered over 500 phone calls, including one from the pentagon, and if that isn’t the most southwestern gothic shit i have ever heard then i will eat the entire mojave desert

On the topic of humans being everyone’s favorite Intergalactic versions  of Gonzo the Great:
Come on you guys, I’ve seen all the hilarious additions to my “humans are the friendly ones” post. We’re basically Steve Irwin meets Gonzo from the Muppets at this point. I love it.

But what if certain species of aliens have Rules for dealing with humans?

  • Don’t eat their food. If human food passes your lips/beak/membrane/other way of ingesting nutrients, you will never be satisfied with your ration bars again.
  • Don’t tell them your name. Humans can find you again once they know your name and this can be either life-saving or the absolute worst thing that could happen to you, depending on whether or not they favor you. Better to be on the safe side.
  • Winning a human’s favor will ensure that a great deal of luck is on your side, but if you anger them, they are wholly capable of wiping out everything you ever cared about. Do not anger them.
  • If you must anger them, carry a cage of X’arvizian bloodflies with you, for they resemble Earth mo-skee-toes and the human will avoid them.
    • This does not always work. Have a last will and testament ready.
  • Do not let them take you anywhere on your planet that you cannot fly a ship from. Beings who are spirited away to the human kingdom of Aria Fiv-Ti Won rarely return, and those that do are never quite the same.

Basically, humans are like the Fair Folk to some aliens and half of them are scared to death and the others are like alien teenagers who are like “I dare you to ask a human to take you to Earth”.

I hear people all the time criticizing musicals by saying “why can’t they just say what they mean instead of singing and dancing about it?” and for years the only answer I’ve had was a smile and a shrug, but I finally just figured it out.

It’s because the words by themselves aren’t enough.

Outside the song, there would be almost no moving passion in Javert’s words “This I swear by the stars.” How would He Had It Comin’ be anywhere near as dangerous and vengeful without the lighting and the dance routine? The reprise of Wouldn’t It Be Luvverly is essential to underlining just how much Henry Higgins has changed and damaged Eliza Doolittle. The Mary Poppins chimney sweeps would just be weird guys off the roof if they didn’t have their whole zany song and choreography to make them a funny and interesting group. And there aren’t any words in any language to describe the complete change in Leslie Odom Jr.’s voice as the music cuts off and he solos “I…wanna be in the room where it happens, the room where it happens.”

The reason we have musicals–and the reason we have music in general–is because words aren’t enough.

Have a tiny self-indulgent gif while I try to remember how to hold my pen!

((OOC: DID SOMEONE SAY EAGLES?!?!?!?! Here’s Rowena Ravenclaw with her white tailed eagle that may or may not be magical and golden and slightly inspired by marahute *cough cough* I have a thing for witches with affinities for birds. Birds to do bidding, birds to be friends with, birds that nip your fingers lovingly, birds that are completely terrified of your newest sleeping death potion. Caw caw mother cluckers))

Summary
Louis once again went to leave, but before he could reach the door he heard Barkley jumping off the bed behind him. The giant dog accosted Louis before he could get through, nudging Louis’ legs with all his weight and making him stumble, and Louis had to grab the doorframe to steady himself.
“What the heck, Barkley?” Louis was mostly talking to himself, aware that Barkley couldn’t actually understand him, but he had never witnessed the dog acting so oddly.
He turned around when he heard a quiet murmur coming from the bed.
“What?” He hadn’t been able to make out what Harry said, but at Louis’ question he sat up in bed, hair already wild from the pillow, eyes heavy, and Louis’ stomach gave a little flip.
“He wants you to stay.”

Or, a very fluffy AU where Louis finds a lost dog that he wishes he could keep - until he meets his owner, who he wishes he could keep more

the thing about shadowhunters including not only aline, who is already a canonical book character, but also ollie and samantha is that they didn’t have to.

the show has already spoken and shown how they don’t mind parting with the books, so they didn’t need to add in aline. but they did, and they did her well. in the books aline kisses jace to ~discover~ herself. the show not only included her but also demolished that idea, with “sebastian” bringing up carolyn. they not only included one of cc’s ONLY canonical sapphic characters, but they also made her self confident, and knowing of herself. i can’t speak for everyone but i know that i’m personally very tired of the coming out arc that has to involve a man for the lesbian to ~truly discover herself~.

and then they added in ollie and samantha as well. after alaric’s passing, it made sense to give luke a new partner. it could have been anyone, but they made it a wlw. and, she’s a three dimensional character, that moves the plot along and has her own sub plot at the same time. she’s slowly learning about the shadow world, and hasn’t been killed because of it (i cannot stress that enough). she has a girlfriend, samantha, and they’re both shown to be domestic and sweet and a real couple, not some gross man’s imagined version. and another factor that plays in is that we’ve seen samantha. she’s not mentioned in passing and forgotten, not a character trait for ollie. she’s a character too, and one i hope we’ll see more of.

another point to be made is that out of these three wlw, two are woc. aline is chinese, and samantha is desi. the fact that out of all the confirmed lgbt characters only two are white is something that needs to be noticed. in media the majority of lgbt characters are white, but media still gets praised for their diversity. two out of the three of the canon wlw are woc, and that’s important to recognize.

these characters are characters, not plot points or something for the audience to drool at. they all three have backgrounds and personalities and move the plot along. i cannot begin to express how utterly delighted i am by these characters as a lesbian. i do love malec with my whole heart, but the amount of excitement and complete joy i feel for finally having sapphic rep in this show is something i never really expected to feel

Twelve Days of Twelve: July 18th: Team TARDIS

A relationship in all its forms, in the combination of a passionate and powerful Time Lord and a young woman so very similar to him.

Reylo is fine.

Rian Johnson said there will be no romance that is central to the storyline in The Last Jedi – that doesn’t mean there won’t be one at all, and in fact we know a central romance was the plan from the get-go*. Johnson went on to specify the absence of a Han and Leia dynamic, and how there would be no relationship like that.

Reylo is fine. 👍

The Vanity Fair writer name dropped two very popular ships, St//rmpilot, and of course Reylo, when quoting Johnson above. Most people are reading this to mean that these ships specifically won’t happen, when NO WHERE is that said. Period. Reading comprehension is fun!

[Note: St//rmpilot WAS actually debunked by John Boyega and Kathleen Kennedy/Lucasfilm, but Reylo has NEVER been discounted… quite the opposite].

Reylo is fine. 👍

JJ Abrams has said a central romance* was “no doubt” in the works since the beginning, and it has existed before Finn was created. Unlike Jedi Killer [Kylo Ren] and Kira [Rey] who both have been CENTRAL figures since conception.

[Note: F//nnrey was debunked before conception and again a few years later by John Boyega].

Reylo is fine. 👍

The Databank and canon sources [novelizations and commentary] provide irrefutable statements that Rey and Kylo Ren share a mysterious connection, that their destinies are intertwined, that Kylo feels compassion for Rey, that she senses his vulnerabilities, and the hints at redemption keep coming … all of these facets exist to make their relationship THE MOST OPEN TO POSSIBILITIES, and nothing that was revealed in the VF article hinders their potential. They will continue to have “a very interesting relationship moving forward.”

REYLO IS FINE. 👍 👍 👍

Littlefinger Recaps Game of Thrones in 5 Minutes | Vanity Fair

my source: u/middlefinger22 bless you

ATLAS: do not talk to me of the weight of the world,
nor its people’s hearts. you know nothing of endurance.
the heavens are heavy and my shoulders ache.
i am tired.

APHRODITE: you think holding the earth is enough?
you think you are close to them just because they rest on
your back? you know nothing of their pain. do you even remember
how tears taste?

ATLAS: i know pain. i know bruises that last centuries,
bone deep and digging like claws, burrowing like worms
through body structure-

APHRODITE: -you know standing still, rigid, a statue in body
and soul alike / you know the exact weight of the human heart
x 7 billion. you do not know how it feels to watch as they burn in place,
how it feels to see them fall; down / in love / to their deaths.

ATLAS: i carry them in life and death. my dear, your hands
are soft; they do not understand the strength it takes to balance
oceans on knuckles and land against muscle.

APHRODITE: my hands are soft because they hold hearts
as easily as you hold the world, and hearts, in their own way, are worlds.
i know strength. better yet, i know how easily strength crumbles
and i know how to guide through the breaking. do not equate soft
with weak. they are not the same thing.
