You took a deep breath, rubbing your temples. You didn’t even know why you were still here, sitting in the uncomfortable chair. Everything was weird and you felt out of place. You were all dressed up, in a fancy dress, your makeup and hair done, thinking that your date was going to take you to a reputed restaurant, but you soon understood that the amazing place he was talking about was just an old rusty bar.

Your date was in the bathroom, leaving you in front of the bar, awkwardly playing with your empty glass.

Sure he was nice, maybe too nice ? He was treating you more like a friend than a possible love interest. Yes, he was kind of cute but all he could talk about was his ex and you couldn’t help but think that he was comparing every single one of your moves with his ex’s.

You sighed, looking around as if someone would help you, but the bar was filled with a bunch of drunk people shouting at a football match. You mentally cursed at yourself for going on this date, but your love life was way too monotone these days. On the other hand, you wished you were in your apartment simply watching a movie, where you wouldn’t embarass yourself.

Your date was taking way too long, you were contemplating leaving the bar, but you felt bad to leave the guy alone without any explanation, and you couldn’t see yourself do something like this.

But what if he was the one who ran away from the horrible date ? Escaping thanks to the back door and leaving you in the most awkward position ever.

Before you could think about it twice, a voice came from behind you.

« Y/N ? », you closed your eyes, silently hoping that the person behind you wasn’t one of your friends, or worst, someone from your class, the situation was already embarassing enough.

You turned around, only to be confronted with the questionning expression on your best friend’s face. You were releaved and anxious at the same time, Jaebum didn’t know that you were going on a date, and he always told you that he had to approve of the guy or girl before anything gets too serious.
He always said it in a joking manner but sometimes you could sense a hint of seriousness in his voice.

Also, you knew he would probably laugh right at your face.

You smiled weakly at him, turning your body to fully face him, « Hi, Jaebum. »

« What are you doing here ? », he asked, taking a wooden chair and sitting next to you, elbows on the counter. He was wearing all black, the colour contrasting with his skin.

« Hm, I-I’m on a date. », you said, carefully watching his reaction. He raised an eyebrow, taking his jacket off.

« Was it that bad ? », he asked, with a laugh. You tilted your head, adjusting your dress, silently telling him to continue talking.

« Well, obviously it went wrong. », he said, taking a sip from his beer, raising the glass to his lips, his arm bulging.

« Hm…. », you cleared your throat, « I’m actually on the date, like, right now. », you said, embarassed, biting your lower lip.

Jaebum nearly shoked on his drink, quickly wiping away a droplet falling from his lips, quietly chuckling against the back of his hand.

« What are you doing dressed like that, in a bar ? », he rapidly asked, putting his drink down.

You sighed, looking at the hallway leading to the bathrooms, before answering, « He told me he was taking to an amazing place, I thought he was taking me to a restaurant or something ! And I got all dressed up and now I’m here an- »

« But where is he ? », Jaebum asked, not letting you finish, eyes wide.

« Bathroom. », you simply answered head falling in your hands.
Jaebum chuckled, claiming you were the only one to get in those types of situation, and you could only agree.

« Do you want us to leave ? », he asked softly after taking another sip, one hand resting on your exposed knee. You really wanted to, but you just felt bad.

« Don’t feel bad if we leave, the guy probably drowned in the toilet. », he said as if he could read your mind, trying to convince you.

« Or, if you want, I can make up an excuse if he comes back in like, 5 minutes. »

You nodded, quietly watching as Jaebum finished his beer, his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down. You were friends with Jaebum since kindergarten and he quickly became your best friend. Growing up with his was a rollercoaster, he would always come up with ideas to get you both or one of you in trouble, and since then, saving each other’s asses was something pretty common.

He would help you get away from your strict parents, and you would help him with tacky one night stands. But also, moments with him were always memorable or calming.

Lost in your thoughts, your were brought back to reality when Jaebum cleared his throat, eyebrows furrowed, looking behind you. You straightened your back, biting your lips as your date finally came out of the hallway.

His expression was mimicking Jaebum’s as he walked straight up to you. His hand came to your shoulder, holding way to tightly, and before you could say anything, your best friend opened his mouth.

« Sorry to interrupt your date, but Y/N and I are going to leave. Something important came up. », simply said Jaebum, what an amazing excuse. The boy beside you raised his eyebrows, clearly not convinced.

« What’s so important ? Who are you ? », he asked, his hand still tightly gripping your shoulder.

« I’m her best friend. Something in our house, we need to go, now. », Jaebum insisted, getting up from his chair.

« It’s okay I can bring her back to your house later. »

His hand was keeping you from getting up, making you even more uncomfortable. But you started to panic when you saw Jaebum’s look on his face, clearly not amused.
Over time, you learned that fucking with Jaebum was not a good idea, pushing his buttons always ended up in some bad situations.
You got up, escaping from the boy’s grip, giving him an apologetic smile.

« We’re leaving, that’s it. », harshly said Jaebum, giving you your coat. « I’ll call you later. », you promised.

And God, you wished your date was compliant, but when he grabbed your wrist, pulling hard, Jaebum heard you cry out, and he snapped.

His own hand grabbed the boy’s arm, « Let her go. », he ordered through gritted teeth, voice low.

You pulled your wrist out of your date’s grip, massaging your skin. Holding Jaebum’s arm, you pulled a little, hoping he would get the hint and leave the bar before he could punch the guy.

Thankfully, Jaebum took his jacket, leaving the bar with you jerking him by his sleeve. The cold hair made you shiver, but you quickly brushed it of, recognizing Jaebum’s car a few steps away.

You knew Jaebum like the back of your hand, and you could feel him fuming beside you, fists clenched. It wasn’t the first time that he was ready to fight someone, you knew how to handle him, but he seemed off.

« Do you want me to drive ? », you asked softly, you tried to take his hand but he just opened the passanger door for you before making his way to the other side.

He slammed the door shut, before starting the car. You knew he wasn’t mad at you, but you didn’t like seeing him like this. He didn’t say a word during the ride, but by the road he was taking, he was obviously taking you back to his house. Every little thing was making him lose more and more patience, sighing and drumming his fingers on the steering wheel.
The city lights highlighted his clenched jaw, and you couldn’t help but let your hand rest on Jaebum’s thigh. Your gesture was supposed to help him relaxe but it did the exact opposite, his muscle flexing.

The rest of the ride was dead silent, bubbles of anxiety were starting to rise in your stomach, something was strange about Jaebum. His behaviour was even worst, speeding to avoid red lights.

« Jaebum, slow down. », you said, worried, gripping his thigh a bit tighter as he passed a car. He just hummed, taking the last turn to his apartment.
He parked in his spot, exiting the car and slamming the door shut once again.

You followed him silently, knowing the path to his door by heart. You inhaled, someone was probably cooking something, the smell making your mouth water.

Jaebum quickly climbed the stairs. With you following behind and the bright neon lights of the building, you noticed the fabric of his leather jacket streching between his shoulder blades, giving you an idea.

When you both finally arrived at Jaebum’s floor, he opened the door, letting you enter first. He quickly shut all the lights in the hallway of the building before closing the heavy wooden door.

Your best friend’s apartment was like a second house to you, you could probably walk blindfolded without a problem. You couldn’t count how many sleepless nights you spent here, playing games, watching movies or just enjoying each other’s presence in silence.

One of his cats gracefully walked towards you, passing between your legs, letting you pet his head before walking straight to Jaebum.

« You can check in the kitchen if there’s anything you want to eat. », he offered, squatting to pet his cat.

« I’m good, but do you want some hot chocolate ? », you asked. When Jaebum was in a bad mood, hot chocolate was always one of the ways to brighten his mood.

« No, I’m okay. I’m going to get change, you can start a movie. », he informed, making his way to his bedroom. While doing so, he took his shirt off, letting you see his back, he was so tense you could actually see it. You sighed, colapsing on the couch, but the idea you previously had while climbind the stairs come to your mind once again.

You rubbing your hands together, crossing your legs. Nora, another one of Jaebum’s cat jumped into your lap, rubbing her head in your neck.
You sat quietly, caressing the animal’s fur, the only thing breaking the silence being the cat’s mew and the tap being opened.

You heard Jaebum’s footsteps, entering the room. He was wearing a pair of grey sweatpants, the only thing on his chest being the white towel on his shoulders. He was drying his slightly wet hair, leaving them messy and thrown back.

He gave you a confused look when he saw that the tv wasn’t on, walking towards the remote control before you stopped him.

« Jaebum. », you softly called. He hummed, looking at you patting the spot in front of you. Eyebrows raised, he sat, making his cat leave your lap, he faced you.
« Turn around. », you asked, and he got it, turning around and removing his towel. Your hands immediatly went to his shoulders, massaging the muscle. You were used to give Jaebum massages, after stressful exams or intense dance practices.

A pleased sigh escaped from Jaebum’s lips, his head tilted to the side. « Your hands are cold. », he whined.

« Sorry. », you chuckled, « You’re really tense. », you added, worried.

He just hummed, acknowledging your remarc without giving a reponse. You could feel the knot under your fingers trying to easy it up.
Your digits were working up to the space where his neck and shoulders met, a moan running down his lips.

« Tell me if I’m spressing too hard. », you whispered, getting closer to his face. You noticed that his eyes were screwed shut, another quiet sigh leaving his lips.

« You’re doing amazing. », he moaned, the compliment making bubbles rise in your stomach.

You fingers worked along his shoulders and neck, and soon enough, Jaebum moved his shoulders in a circular motion, a final sigh leaving his mouth.
He ran his fingers in his hair, turning to face you.

« May I return the favour ? », he ask, a lazy smile on his face. You turned around, somehow eager to feel his fingers on your skin.

« Wait, I have to unzip the back. », you said, quickly realizing that you were wearing a dress.

Before your hand could reach the zipper, you felt Jaebum grab the fabric of your dress, pulling the zipper down, his fingertips lightly tracing your vertical column, making you shiver.

His breath was ghosting over the skin of your shoulders, maybe it was just your imagination, but Jaebum’s breath got caught when he saw the fine black lingerie underneath your dress.

Just like yours, his fingers started working on your shoulders and neck, but when his digits worked on the spot where your date grabbed you, you couldn’t help but whine a little.

« Sorry. », he mumbled, but before you could brush it off, his lips came in contact with your skin, leaving a single, innocent kiss. You gasped, his lips were still dangerously close to your skin and without thinking, your fingers tangled in his hair.

Everything happened so quickly. One moment, your best friend was giving you a simple massage, after you gave him one to help him relax, and now he was eagerly kissing down the side of your neck, his fingers now traveling down your sides.

« Jaebum. », you sighed, the feeling of his lips was driving you crazy, he wouldn’t let them long enough on your skin for you to appreciate the feeling, leaving you craving for more.

A moan fell out of your mouth when his lips met a particular spot, he started sucking on it, leaving a purple mark. Another moan escaped from your lips, your body relaxing against his torso.

« Come here kitten. », he asked nibbling at your skin, one hand resting on your thigh.

You turned around, Jaebum’s face still burried in your neck. Rapidly, you sat on his lap, as his hands traveled down to the small of your back, pushing down the fabric of your dress.

« Jaebum. », you called. You were craving to feel his lips on yours, just the thought of it making bubbles rise in your stomach. You had kissed Jaebum once or twice, by accident or because of dare, but it obviously felt so different now.

« Jaebum. », you whined, calling him again, seeing that he wouldn’t leave your neck before marking you. Finally, he looked up, the tip of his nose tracing your jawline.
His lips ghosted over yours, the feeling disappearing as soon as it appeared. A smile made his you on his face when he heard you whine again. You decided to take matters into your own hands, grabbing his jaw before crashing your lips into Jaebum’s.

And it felt so different from every other kiss you ever had, his lips were soft but so aggressive, biting and licking.

When you darted your tongue out, it was as if Jaebum stopped containing himself. A grown came out of his lips as his hands became more adventurous, slipping his hands under your dress hanging on your hips.

You got the hint, getting up to let him take your dress off. He detached his lips from yours, breath irregular, slidding the fabric off, leaving you in your underwear.
It’s not like Jaebum never saw you in your underwear, but he never looked at you liked that, almost devouring you with his eyes cloudy with lust.

His lips went back to your collarbones, and your body instantly reacted, bucking your hips. Jaebum moaned, his hands going back to your ass, pushing your body into his.
You tried to muffle a loud moan when he took your hips in his hands, making you grind on him.

« Just like that. », he moaned, voice low, as he guided you with his hands. You could feel him against your heat, and he was hard. The only things separating you were his sweatpants and your underwear but even with those things, the pleasure was overwhelming. You didn’t know if you ever felt so sensitive, but your rapid heartbeats told you it was because of Jaebum, because it was him.

One of his hands traveled from your thigh to your knee, before he started to kiss you again. Suddently, his digits ghosted over your panties, feeling the wet spot that was starting to form, making you gasp.

You stopped moving your hips, hoping that Jaebum would finally touch you where you needed him the most.

« What is it ? », he chuckled, amused by the situation.

« Jaebum, please. », you breathed. He was playing with the hem panties, pulling at it before letting it slap back. Your head fell backwards when his fingers started to rub circles on your clit, not letting you the time to breath.

« Fuck, you look so good. », breathed Jaebum through gritted teeth. You could only moan, rolling your hips into his hand.
« So wet. »
, he noticed, finally letting two of his fingers enter your pussy.

A cry escaped from your lips, filling the silent living room. However, Jaebum didn’t move his fingers, silently watching in awe as your chest rose and fell with every irregular breath.

Finally, he started to pump his fingers up and down in a steady pace, not giving you any time. His name was falling from your lips like a prayer, begging him to go faster.

Your own hands gripped his bare shoulders, your head dropping in his neck. You tried to muffle your moans, kissing and sucking on his skin.
He groaned, his digits thrusting in a slow but deep pace.

Soon enough, your felt the familiar knot in your stomach, ready to explode. Your breath got caught in your throat, a thin layer on sweat forming on your skin.

Your body started to move alongside Jaebum’s fingers, moving up and down, trying to reach your climax. But all at once, you lost every ounce of pleasure, making you gasp. Jaebum’s hand was on your hip, preventing you from riding his fingers.
He was holding them in front of his lips, chassing your eyes before taking them in his mouth, moaning at the taste.

« Jaebum. », you whined, rolling your hips into his, feeling his hard cock underneath the soft fabric of his sweatpants.

« Fuck. », he hissed. Eyes filled with lust, he hooked his fingers in your panties. You got up on your knees, letting the boys take it off, your heart beating quicker.

Your hands went on Jaebum’s torso, letting your fingertips drag along on the soft skin, before coming in contact with the hem of his underwear.

The outline of his cock was visible underneath it, and all you wanted to do was to focus on him.

A thin layer of sweat was also noticeable on his chest, rising and falling in an uneven rhythm.

You licked your lips, pulling at his sweatpants and eagearly taking his cock in your hand. Jaebum breath stopped, before letting out a sigh. Your thumb teased his tip, pre-cum leaking from it.

« Stop. », he hissed, taking your chin between his fingers. « We can do that another time. », he breathed.

His hands went back on your ass, head dropping back in your neck, « Ride me. »

And that’s all you needed. Guiding his shaft to you entrance, you slowly started to sink on his cock.
Jaebum moaned, head thrown back on the couch. A sigh left your lips, you were still sensitive, rediscovering the pleasure that Jaebum’s fingers were providing you a few moments later, but it was even more intense.

A few locks of hair were resting on Jaebum’s closed eyes, your hand softly tugged them back, making him open his eyes.
They were dark, looking directly at you.

His hand grabbed yours, intertwining your fingers with his and giving support while you started to bounce. His arm locked in the small of your back, he was keeping you close, he needed to feel your skin as closely as possible.

Groans and moans were filling the room as both of you were chassing your highs. Jaebum couldn’t help but buck his hips, hitting a particuliar spot, making you at his hair.

A groan came out of his chest, alongside a serie of « fuck »’s as he breathed heavely.
The boy’s throat was exposed, and you could’nt resist but let your lips travel all the way until you met his bobbing Adam’s apple, sucking near it.

« Baby. », Jaebum called. You could only moan in responce, unable to form proper words.

« Faster, please. », he begged, whining.

You never saw Jaebum like that, so vulnerable, chest rising and falling, chicks slightly red, hair messy, eyelids heavy.
You did as told, using your remaining strength to lift yourself yp and slam back down, the sound of skin against each other filling the room.
Breathy moans were heard from both of you, your legs were started to burn but you were so close, so close.

« I’m gonna cum. », you moaned, your nails dragging down his torso. A loud moan tumbled from Jaebum’s lips as your walls clenched around him. His hand sneaked between your bodies, rubbing circles on your clit, helping you reach your climax.

And when you did, the knot in your stomach finally exploding, it wash over you, your vision blurred, all you could focus on was Jaebum and his moans, more and more breathy and frequent.

He reached his high just after you, a loud and final moan coming from his lips, leaving him breathless and numb, one one his hand came to his forehead.

Your head fell on the boy’s torso, trying to catch your breath. All you could hear was his own ragged breath and the pounding of your heart, and you only smiled when you felt his heart beating as fast as yours.

Your hands were still intertwined, his lips softly kissed your knuckles, before murmuring a soft, « I love you. »

Nurseydex & Acting Class

Eyoooooooooooooooo, the CP Resident Shakespeare Ho/Theater Major is back with more shamelessly using these characters as a means to talk about my major Nurseydex Antics!

As anyone who follows me knows by now, I’m a theater major. Dex and Nursey are comedy gold, and the thought of them working with any of the texts I’ve worked with is just DELIGHTFUL.

(Click here and here for my other Shakespeare Ho/theater major posts)

So without further ado!

  • Dex needs and art credit. Just one more fucking art credit. But his schedule is insane and there’s only one he can take this semester
  • it’s an acting class
  • He doesn’t want to do it. Mostly because his boyfriend will be I N S U F F E R A B L E
  • But he just wants to get this over with so he registers and just waits for Nursey to find out
  • Nursey is delighted. And registers for that class, too.
  • “YOU DON’T NEED ANOTHER ART CREDIT, DEREK!” “Dude, you really think I’m gonna miss this?”
  • Dex doesn’t really know what to expect going in, but he definitely wasn’t expecting the prof (let’s call him Casey) to be this hot middle aged guy who dresses like Indiana Jones and lives in a cabin and recites Shakespeare to trees
  • (we’re talking Adventure Indy, not Professor Indy)
  • (what no I’m not basing him on my prof Kerry who is also currently directing me in Julius Caesar why would you think that)
  • Nursey and Casey hit it off because Casey is this great mix of Passionate and IDGAF and Nursey wants to be him when he grows up
  • Dex’s main reaction to him is “?????????” until he starts talking about his cabin in the woods and then they bond over Practical Shit like fixing window panes and Nature
  • (the rest under the cut because this always happens my posts are always long af)

M/M romance recs

Here’s a list of my favourites! Organised by genre, with very broad summaries. All of them have HEA, all the m/m romances are the central ones.

Names in bold have POC protagonists, names in cursive have disabled protagonists (be it physical disability, mental illness or chronic illness). In series with multiple couples, it’s usually one or more.

Feel free to ask me about triggers for any of them!

Historical:

  • Soldier’s Scoundrel by Cat Sebastian

Disabled regency war vet aristocrat decides to hang around a self-proclaimed ex-criminal helping those who need help. Said ex-criminal tries not to be charmed, ends up catching feelings instead

  • The Lawrence Browne Affair by Cat Sebastian

Confidence artist grows a conscience and angers dangerous people, so he needs to pose as a secretary to a scientifically minded, but eccentric Lord. Really beautiful portrayal of people on autistic spectrum and anxiety.

  • The Ruin of a Rake by Cat Sebastian

Posh and straight-laced gentleman has to help a famous scoundrel aristocrat to restore his image after a raunchy novel supposedly based on his exploits gets published. Contains ridiculous amounts of adorable kittens, tasty pastries and also wonderful portrayal of chronic illnesses

  • Sins of the Cities by KJ Charles

Trilogy set in victorian London, during the horrible London Fog of 1873. Three wonderful and diverse couples (one is half-indian with dyspraxia, one is non-binary, one was born with partial arm, one is near-sighted), murder mystery, fake mediums, lost earls, intrigue! It’s so good

  • Wanted, a Gentleman by KJ Charles

A delightful and frankly hilarious regency romp through British countryside. An unlikely couple of men need to travel to Gretna Green to save a young girl from potentially dangerous marriage. One of the protagonists is a black ex-slave merchant and the book touches upon his experiences (very respectfully!)

  • Society of Gentlemen by KJ Charles

A Society of gentlemen who like other gentlemen, centered around Lord Richard Vane and his friends and acquitances. Set during the radical uprising during the Regency, it has everything- friendships and families, sedition, intrigue, bookstores and good wine, valets being the mightiest strategists and amazing lovable radicals. This trilogy is honestly my favourite thing EVER.

  • Think of England by KJ Charles

Wounded during the Boer war, seemingly because of treason and betrayal, Archie Curtis sets off to a countryside mansion to get to the bottom of the matter. Completely unprepared for the task, he teams up with Daniel da Silva, the elegant jewish poet, who is much more capable than he seems. Absolutely delightful <333

HISTORICAL PARANORMAL

  • Whyborne and Griffin series by Jordan L. Hawk

The adventures of a shy sorcerer linguistic nerd, his detective husband, the most badass lady archeologist (the actual love of my life) and more, as they save the world from otherworldly beings bent on destroying it. Will make you cry about found families, strong and wonderful friendships and broken people finding strength in each other. Has magic, archeology, monsters, reluctant travels, lesbian warrior fishes and the best ginger cat in the world.

  • Hexworld series by Jordan L. Hawk

Turn of the century New York witch detectives and their familiars must fight to uncover a conspiracy plan to change the world. Really amazing worldbuilding, the magic system is very cool and it will make you furious about the treatment of familiars. The familiars are, generally speaking, fucking hilarious.

  • A Charm of Magpies by KJ Charles

Filthy-mouthed dominant earl falls in love with a stubborn and heroic wizard, together they create magic. A lot of people want that magic though, and it gets ugly. First KJ book I’ve ever read and I fell in love instantly. Has two more books set in the same universe with different protagonists and those are also amazing. (Rag and Bone is the one with black protagonist)

  • A Death by Silver by Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold

University-era friends need to figure out their confused emotions, while investigating a murder that brings out bad memories. Very good and soft, with even a better sequel

  • Downtime by Tamara Allen

When in London for a case, FBI agent gets sent back in time to Victorian London. While there, he finds out magic is real. Decides that since he’s there anyway, might as well investigate who Jack the Ripper was. Very sweet and soft

  • Restless Spirits by Jordan L. Hawk

A medium and a scientist bent on proving said medium to be a fraud get chosen to be in a contest to prove which side is better. They end up having to team up to save lives of people around.

  • The Secret Casebook of Simon Feximal by KJ Charles

Journalist and writer Robert Caldwell has been a close friend and lover of ghost hunter Simon Feximal for years and has been chronicling their adventures. Now, he finally writes the true story of their life together. Warning: this book will absolutely ruin you for years to come. You will be a mess whenever you think of the book and you will enjoy every second of it.

  • Green Men by KJ Charles

Set in the world of The Secret Casebook of Simon Feximal. Only few years after WW1, Britain is still recovering from the war. Having lost an entire generation of youth and most of the sorcerers the country had, those left are completely unprepared for what’s to come. Wonderful characters, the softest romance I’ve read possibly ever and beautifully melancholic. Best KJ book, in my opinion.

CONTEMPORARY

  • Shadow of the Templar by M. Chandler

FBI agent and his team are tasked with catching a famous international art thief, they end up kinda sorta accidentally adopting him instead. One of the funniest series I’ve ever read, honestly.

  • Cut&Run by Abigail Roux and Madeleine Urban

The incredible adventures on an unlikely pair of FBI agents go from enemies to lovers. Includes serial killers, undercover luxury yacht trips, tiger trafficking, drugs, marine buddies and one of the genuinely best character developments I’ve read. Warning, the first book is a bit shit. The rest is absolutely incredible though.

  • The General and the Horse-lord by Sarah Black

Retired ex-military lovers need to figure out what to do with their relationship, now that they’re civillians. A soft look at older gay people still figuring out their sexuality.

  • The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic

Neil Josten is on the run from his mafia murderous father and gets signed up for a professional college sports team, while people are still after him. It’s a really powerful emotional journey, but contains a large amount of a very triggering content, so be safe please.

CONTEMPORARY PARANORMAL

  • THIRDS series by Charlie Cochet

FBI like team consisting of shifters and their partners must investigate conspiracy and threats against the new shifter population. Ridiculously hilarious at times, absolutely heartbreaking at other.

  • Deep Magic by Gillian St. Kevern

A story steeped in welsh folklore, with beautiful mermaid princes and knights who will save them. Shows the power stories have to change our lives. Plus it’s free so what are you waiting for?

  • Psycop series by Jordan Castillo Price

A medium detective and his partner investigate a series of supernatural crimes. People are horrible, corporations are horrible, ghosts are horrible and lbr, everything is kinda horrible, but it gets better.

  • Wriggle and Sparkle by Megan Derr

The adventures of Lynn the Kraken shifter and Anderson the unicorn shifters, their detective careers, and their life together. Honestly adorable. And when I say adorable, I mean sparkles-on-rainbow-filled-cupcake kind of adorable. Also, Lynn’s gender-presentation is fluid and it’s absolutely wonderful.

FANTASY

  • Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat

Prince gets betrayed and sent as a slave to his sworn enemy, they end up working together to save their countries and fall in love. The best enemies to lovers example. Has amazing and complex politics, unreliable narrator and great worldbuilding. You’ve probably already heard of this book, but if you’re worried about triggers, please ask someone who actually read it, because there’s a lot of misinformation flying around.

  • Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling

The fantasy series of your dreams. There is ancient evil being revived, war is coming, everyone is bisexual and the kingdom is ruled by an ancient line of warrior queens. Everyone is wonderful and charming, characters are complex and the story will make you laugh and cry.

  • The God Eaters by Jesse Hajicek

Western-style world, where gods are reborn as humans, and one of them tried to control the whole world. It doesn’t go exactly as he planned.

  • Lord of the White Hell by Ginn Hale

Teenage genius inventor gets accepted to a prestigious boarding school in enemy territory. His room-mate might be demon-possesed and there’s some evil magic lurking around.

  • Champion of the Scarlet Wolf by Ginn Hale

Somewhat sequel to Lord of the White Hell. Disgraced noble travels to a faraway country, where he saves an injured dog. Turns out the dog isn’t just a dog, magic is everywhere around them and there’s a witch war coming.

  • Fairytales Slashed vol. 1 by Megan Derr

A collection of gay fairy tales. All kinds of stories with all kinds of characters (my favourite one is the one with the jester <333)

  • Dance with the Devil by Megan Derr

Adventures of half-ghost detective, his demon husband, imp partner, witch colleague and a vampire. Really cute and intriguing, with mysteries and conspiracies.

  • Dance in the Dark by Megan Derr

Set in the same universe as Dance with the Devil (there’s an entire series). Human son of a dracula becomes a detective, moves out to the city to help others, and gains a lover who only visits him in the dark.

  • The Rapier Brothers by Megan Derr

A collection of short stories centered around swordsmen. Three different couples, three really cute stories. Love it.

“We’ve got casualties coming in!”

The makeshift hospital you were working in was the closest to the battlefield that lay just two miles from you and already you were inundated with the injured. So much so that for those who came in with wounds they would never recover from you had to leave them to attend to those who had a chance of survival. It wasn’t the kind of decision you ever wanted to make but this was war and it had now become an hourly task…so you quickly had to become desensitised to the horror of it all.

When the call came through for more casualties you left your current patient in the hands of the other nurses and made your way over to the entrance of the tent. The sound of constant gunfire had become the soundtrack to your days, and even your nights, so it no longer fazed you…..it was the sound of planes you needed to worry about, they were what carried the real threat to the hospital.

“How many have we got?”

“Two. From the Howling Commandos would you believe? Both have sustained bullet wounds.”

JNPR Headcanons (sorry, it's long)

•It’s obvious that Ren & Nora, and Jaune & Pyrrha are besties. But Ren & Jaune are bros while Nora & Pyrrha are like sisters

•Actually, the team is one family

•Edit: Everyone on this show has their own inner demons just like we do. They’re not perfect and they struggle with their own issues, team JNPR especially
-Jaune really cares about what others think of him and works so hard to be a hero and lovable and kind
-Nora is sort of the same way only her anxiety manifests itself as constantly moving and babbling. She really tries not to come off as a pest (& she isn’t) bc she doesn’t want anymore people leaving her (bc they always do). Sometimes the words of others effect her more than she let’s on (which leads to issues w/ her & Ren later in their relationship)
-Pyrrha cares more about people seeing her for who she really is. She not a trophy that’s won. She’s not a centerpiece. She’s Pyrrha
-Ren doesn’t really try to be more sociable. He knows that his quietness comes off as being shy, but those who know him know that he simply doesn’t have much to say. He does make his opinions known, though, and when he speaks more, you know that he thinks you’re trustworthy. His main issue is talking about what’s wrong. He gets so silent when he’s upset or angry. The only person that can crack him is his best friend.

•Jaune & Ren take turns being the dad (Jaune is Daddy Jaune in battle, Ren is Daddy Ren any other time)

•Pyrrha is mommy all the time

•When Jaune sees Nora, he thinks of one of his younger sisters & it makes him feel a bit less homesick

•Nora loves getting the team to do crazy shit like JNPR tattoos, sky diving, & swimming w/ Grimm sharks

•Speaking of tats
-They all have a JNPR tat with juniper berries & one of their emblem
-Nora has lighting bolts, boop, & a syrup bottle
-Jaune has a heart with ‘Arc Family’ on it
-Ren has the date of the attack on his village & Nora’s emblem
-Pyrrha has ‘Destiny’ written in a flower and her kids names

•As stated before, Nora & Pyrrha’s periods sync up and their boys handle it well

•Jaune bc he has sisters who go through the same thing & Ren bc he’s been with Nora forever

•Nora likes cuddles, heat, massages, sleep, & food during that time. She’s actually kind of of quiet during that time & a little more mopey

•Pyrrha is very irritable during that time and enjoys solitude unless she’s w/ Nora

•Birds of a feather suffer together

•The dress Jaune wore is actually Coco’s

•Bets get insane, esp when RWBY, CVFY, & SSSN are involved

•They do tons of partner sparring, but they love team sparring (every man for themselves)

•Nora & Pyrrha are the most well rounded with everyone else’s weapons, Ren coming after, & Jaune is last

•Pyrrha is the first awake to run, Nora gets up no later than 7 every morning, Jaune trudges along, Ren sleeps in bc fuck mornings

•They do team studying a lot which entails quizzes with candy for those who get questions right and punishment for getting it wrong

•It’s the only way Jaune or Nora will study for anything

•Jaune & Nora aren’t dumb. Jaune genuinely doesn’t get it sometimes and gets bored in class. Nora is smart, but lazy

•Pyrrha’s favorite class is Port’s. His lectures are interesting

•Jaune’s favorite class is… probably none… he’s not doing well in any right now…

•Nora’s favorite classes are Oobleck’s (watching him zip around is fun), Peach’s (science and explosions), Goodwitch’s (fighting), & her math class

•She’s a wiz at math

•Ren enjoys Port’s and Goodwitch’s classes

•They have a system where they copy Pyrrha’s notes if they miss something (they’re detailed af)

•Pyrrha is easily scared and reacts a little violently (punching shit) and she doesn’t do supernatural shit ever

•Edit: they’re all pretty chill about hanging around the dorm in undies and bras (it took Jaune some time, though)

•Jaune & Nora are DC fans. Ren & Pyrrha are Marvel fans. All enjoy X-ray and Vav

•They totally go to comic cons, cosplay, & gaming conventions together. You cannot tell me otherwise

•Passing the aux chord isn’t normally an issue until someone (Nora and Jaune) starts playing showtunes & rapping to Hamilton

•Ren is the only one who appreciates Yang’s puns

•Jaune & Ren are skilled cooks and normally don’t allow Pyrrha or Nora to help, but they do sometimes cut veggies and stir (Nora, stop adding spices right now! Pyrrha, do you even know what oregano is?)

•Jaune loves dead memes & is still raving about deez nuts & Harambe

•The group chat on ChatSnap is a total mess & any important info gets burried under memes, selfies, and videos
-Nora’s CS is mostly pictures of her team & friends
-Ren’s is filled with professional photos w/ some deep caption
-Pyrrha’s is clumsily trying to figure what she’s doing
-Jaune has awkward selfies & recordings of Pyrrha when she’s off guard

•Sailors!!!
-Nora isn’t as bad as Yang or Qrow, but she’s no saint with cursing
-Ren doesn’t curse… out loud
-Jaune doesn’t unless he’s irritated
-You’d have to really push Pyrrha past her breaking point to get her to say fuck

•Edit: they totally have a naughty jar for swearing & making inappropriate jokes

•Edit: Nora is the go to person for charging scrolls, but is also the person to break them

•Edit: I like to think that she could be a defibrillator

•They often spend holiday break with Jaune’s family

•Ren, Nora, & Pyrrha have practically been adopted into the family

•Jaune’s older sisters work hard to get them all paired together-together

•If Pyrrha gets hurt, Jaune is worried but he’s not freaking out. He knows she can handle herself

•If Nora is hurt, Ren cannot focus & goes on a killing spree

•Jaune & Ren’s bro time is spent cooking, watching anime, or just talking

•They went to the doubles round during their 2nd year at Beacon
-Nora & Pyr the first year

•They mostly enjoy video games!
-Jaune is more into games like Myth of Welda, Remnant Bound, Underneath Remnant tale (totally uncreative), & trivia games
-Pyrrha likes the games at the arcade where you shoot stuff & party games (Xario Cart, Xario Partee, and Xario and Tonic at the Extremely Hard & Profesional Games)
-Nora likes anything violent (esp GTA)
-Ren doesn’t play very often, but is a God at rhythm/dance games (with Nora, those two are unbeatable & always get a perfect score)

•Drinking
-Nora is energetic, a little destructive after a few, & cannot hold her liquor
-Pyrrha is seductive af, but she rarely gets that far. Only once or twice
-Jaune is sleepier & clingy
-Ren very rarely drinks & can hold it exceedingly well

•Team bonding is normally spent watching a movie with pizza and cookies, bowling, arcades, or going out to dinner

•All team activities are classified as a double date when they’re dating

•Renora dated first, then Arkos

•There was a brief period where Nora actually broke up with Ren & Pyrrha was with her while Ren was with Jaune until they figured things out (I may write something on it later)

•However, it was Arkos that got married first

•The team are maids of honor & best men at each other’s weddings

•Pyrrha laced her bouquet with metal to control where it landed after she threw it (Nora “caught” it) -Ren proposed soon after in a quieter place

•If the couples argue, one normally goes to the other couple’s house to vent and cool down before going home

•Renora had 3 kids: Kensley, Ming, & Iman (adopted)

•Arkos had twins Louise & Eros

•Before the kids came, they went on team missions very often. After they’re all out of the house, they start again

•They also go on partner missions & swap who goes with who each time (Jaune/Nora, Ren/Pyrrha, couples, guys, girls)

•They often go on family vacations together & celebrate holidays because they’re one big family

•Pyrrha & Nora retire to teach at Signal

•Jaune & Ren join them soon afterwards

Prompt: Random girl at bar starts flirting with Jake, Jake is clueless and it all goes right over his head, Amy steps in and gets her to back off

HI THANK U FOR THIS PROMPT I HAD FUN bc jake is a puppy and of course he’s got no clu what’s happenin:

On an early December evening, the warmth of Shaw’s is immediately comforting- as he enters, Jake can feel everything from the freezing cold tip of his nose, to his red cheeks, to the stiffness of his icy fingers, encompassed by the cosy heat of the room.

Reluctantly- despite this warmth- he pulls off his coat and his scarf as he approaches the bar, slipping onto a stool and trying to catch Carl’s eye so he can signal for a beer. This is to no avail; it’s busier than usual in here, even for a Friday, and he’s completely occupied, hands full with dirty glasses while someone gives him an order. For now, Jake relaxes against the bar, pulling his phone from his pocket to check the time.

For what may very well be the first time in his life, he’s early.

He’s due to meet her here in half an hour, to celebrate the end of what’s been a completely tortuous week. Both are working stupidly, painfully long cases, and have barely seen each other, even at work. He feels it in his chest, a tightness, one he’s known long before these couple months of their romantic relationship- a tightness that can only be fixed by Amy.

A hollow grumble in his stomach brings a sharp pang of hunger into his head, which is when he realises he hasn’t actually had anything to eat since breakfast. Mindlessly, he picks at a bowl of peanuts on the bar, only glancing up a couple of times- to order a beer, and to check for Amy.

“Hey, are you okay? You look lonely!”

A saccharine, perky voice makes him do a double take; at first, he’s not even sure it’s addressing him, until he turns round and sees a smiling blonde woman next to him.

Andreil and marriage

Okay so before I get to the fanfic … I know that in actuality a marriage proposal between Neil and Andrew (don’t tell me Nora says it wouldn’t happen, I don’t even care, she said Aaron’s her favourite Minyard, I’m overruling her) would go something like this:

Andrew is threatening to stab the nurses next time Neil lands himself in the hospital and Andrew isn’t allowed in because he’s not “family” in the legal sense of the word.

And Neil’s like “well, we could just get married.”

And Andrew just kind of looks at him for a while. And then he’s like “yes or no?”

And Neil says yes.

And Andrew raises his percentage.

And they make out.

Whatever.

But I just had to indulge myself in thinking that perhaps there would be a universe where Neil and Andrew would acknowledge that they want to marry for FEELINGS rather than convenience.

So. Here goes (hope the read more works this time or this is gonna be a sucky cliffhanger).

I’m Right Here (Barry Allen x Reader)

Part One

Prompt: Barry and you were living a great life, until Barry runs back in time to where his parents weren’t dead. He thought life was perfect until he realized that he had lost his one and only love. You.

Word Count: 1,712

Author’s Note: Hey guys, so in this ‘Flashpoint’, everyone is still friends with everyone. I know in the show it’s different but oh well just fyi in case you guys were confused lol BASICALLY it’s the same as the regular timeline. There is no Kid Flash (sorry Wally), and Barry is still The Flash in Central City AND Roy is in here…I’m sorry I love Roy so much I cried when he left Arrow so I just had to bring him back.

“Barry, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, Barry,” you whispered as your boyfriend of 2 years sobbed silently into your shoulder. Tears welled up in your eyes, daring to flood, and your heart clenched at his pain, but you knew that you had to stay strong for him. For Barry.

Zoom had just killed his father right in front of him, and Barry couldn’t do anything to stop that murderer except watch. You couldn’t even begin to imagine what Barry must’ve felt in those few seconds. He ran back to Joe’s house where you were waiting outside, worried and helpless. You sat on the front steps with Barry clinging onto you like you were all he had left, and you basically were.

“Barry,” you said softly, running your fingers gently through his soft brown hair. He looked up with you with red eyes, somehow the green in them standing out more than usual. You cupped his face. “I’m right here, okay, Bar? I’m not leaving. You’ll be okay. I’ll be with you every step of the way.”

Barry smiled at you and kissed you deeply. He loved you so much. He knew that he was going to live the rest of his life with you. But he was going to live the rest of his life with you and his parents. Barry had made up his mind: he was going back in time to save his mom.

“I love you, Y/N. I will always love you,” he said in a hushed tone, his warm breath fanning over your cold nose. You kissed him back lightly.

“But I can’t live like this. I’m going to go save my mom,” Barry announced as he pulled back slightly.

This made you sit back, looking at him. “What, Barry, you can’t. Barry, you can’t do something like that. It’ll change everything,” you warned.

He sighed deeply with a sad smile. “That’s the point.” He let go of your hands and began to stand up. You followed after.

“Barry,” you started, your voice raising slightly, “Don’t do this. You’ll regret it. I know you, Bar. You’re not going to feel right doing this.” You opened your mouth to stop him, but he cut you off.

“Y/N, you’ll finally be able to meet my mom,” he looked at you with his sad green eyes, “she’d love you.” Your heart broke slightly at his yearning for his parents. You too wanted so badly to meet his mom. Barry’s dad was the kindest person you’ve met, and you knew that his mom would be the same, if not better. But you knew of the consequences and you also knew that Barry would come to regret this decision.

Barry gave you one last loving look before running away, the lightening and wind the only indications that he was even there. He had gone to change the timeline.

Barry Allen, what have you done?

*in Flashpoint*

“Mom! I’ve missed you.” Barry hugged his mom as if he hadn’t seen her in years, which to him, he hadn’t.

“Woah, Bar, calm down. You only came back from work,” she laughed but hugged him all the same.

“What’s going on here?” Henry asked as he walked in the room with a newspaper tucked under his arm. Tears welled up in Barry’s eyes, so happy that he finally had both of his parents here in the same room with him. Nora shrugged before going back to finishing her coffee.

Barry smiled at his dad before smuggling him with a bear hug as well. “Nothing, I’m just so happy to see you guys,” he said.

“Alright, son, I don’t know what’s gotten into you, but your friend Cisco called, asking for you.”

“Oh, really?” Barry was going to call you but maybe you were already at S.T.A.R. Labs, so after saying a quick ‘goodbye’ to his parents, he ran over to the lab, excited to see everyone. But most importantly, you.

As he walked in everything seemed the same. Caitlin and Cisco were at the computers and Harry was chilling in the corner with a coffee in hand. But he realized that you were gone. Maybe you were in the bathroom.

“Hey, guys!” Barry greeted with his famous smile.

Caitlin said a ‘hi’ in return, and Cisco turned around in his chair to look at Barry with suspicion.

“Hi…why’re you so happy today?” Cisco questioned with his eyes squinted.

Barry shrugged. “What? I can’t be happy today?”

Cisco turned back around in his chair and pretended to be nonchalant. “No, no, it’s good. It’s all good…”

Barry glared at him before asking the question that has been on his mind since he walked in.

“Hey, where’s Y/N? Is she out?” Barry asked the group.

Caitlin looked up from her computer. “Y/N? Why do you need her?” she asked in confusion. Barry laughed. “That’s funny, Caitlin. Do you know where I can find her?”

“I’m pretty sure she’d be where she always is,” Harry piped from the corner, interested in a contraption that he’d been working on.

“Which is…” Barry trailed off, pretending to know where you’d be, but in reality, he had no idea.

Cisco finished your sentence with the same confusion laced in his voice as Caitlin did. “…in Star City with Oliver. Barry, you are one weird speedster today. Are you sure you’re okay?” he asked, laughing a bit to himself.

Star City? Why would Y/N be in Star City?

Questions floated around in Barry’s head but he pushed them away. It doesn’t matter why you’re in Star City, as long as he gets to celebrate his new family with you.

“Great! I’ll be right back, guys!” Barry announced, getting ready to speed to Star City, where Team Arrow was located, to get you.

“Uh, where are you…going?” Cisco started but didn’t have the chance to finish his sentence as Barry had already disappeared. He looked at Caitlin for answers but she just shrugged and went back to her work.

Barry entered Team Arrow’s secret hideout while in his Flash suit. The green lights illuminated the place, leaving the middle a bright white. It was quiet, and he could hear the clacking of Felicity’s keyboard and the sound of her voice as she spoke to someone. It seemed like she was talking into the earpiece that Oliver’s team uses when they go on missions. As Barry rounded the corner, there was no one there except for the blonde genius.

“Felicity?” Barry called.

Suddenly, she shrieked and flew out of her chair. Barry’s eyes went wide as he went to help her.

Felicity slapped Barry on the arm before talking back into her earpiece.

“Yeah, it’s nothing,” she started as she glared at the speedster, “It’s just Barry.” A pause. “Don’t worry, I’ll ask him why he’s here, Oliver. You just finish the job and get back.” Felicity then pulled out her black earpiece and slapped his other arm.

“Ow!” Barry exclaimed, rubbing both arms in soreness.

“That’s for scaring me! Barry Allen, you know better than to do that to me,” she scolded. She situated herself back into the leather chair before looking up at the unexpected visitor.

“So, why are you here, Barry? Do you need Oliver’s help?” Felicity asked.

“Actually,” he started, “I was looking for Y/N. Is she here? Cisco told me she was in Star City.”

Felicity looked as confused as Cisco and Caitlin did. “Yeah…Y/N’s here. Why?”

Now it was Barry’s turn to seem confused. More frustrated than confused. “Why is everyone asking me that? What’s wrong with wondering where my gir-” He didn’t get to finish his sentence because he heard a voice behind him. A voice that he’d missed even though it’s been only hours.

“Barry? What are you doing here?” you called out. You smiled at him and went to give him a hug. His face changed into one of happiness as he wrapped his arms around your waist. He missed your body against his.

As you went to pull back, Barry took your head in his hands and pressed his lips against yours with passion. This is what he wanted. Both of his parents alive and his girlfriend right beside him. But something was off.

Your eyes went wide as you felt foreign lips against yours. You didn’t know what to do. Shock took over your body and you froze. Felicity stared in surprise as well, unable to form any words. You were about to push him away when a voice cut through the silence. An angry voice.

“What the hell is going on here?!”

That pulled Barry away from you to look at the speaker of the voice. Team Arrow had come back from their mission. Oliver, Diggle, and Theia all watched as Roy stalked up to Barry. A moment passed before Roy’s fist came flying towards Barry’s face. Fast.

Barry stumbled backwards and knocked against the table, his right hand holding his hand to his cheek. Your eyes got wider. Roy took a step towards Barry but you held his arm back. He looked at you with anger, than concern. Roy held your head in his hands, his eyes roaming your face for any injures.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yeah, yeah,” you whispered, “it was nothing. It was just an accident.”

But then Barry got up. “What the hell was that for?!” he yelled.

“Barry,” you warned.

Roy scoffed, his douche stance taking over. “It was because you kissed my girlfriend, you ass.”

Suddenly, Barry’s heart stopped cold. He looked over to you, slowly feeling his perfect life break.

“You’re..his girlfriend?” he asked quietly.

You scrunched your eyebrows. “Yes, Barry, for the past two years. You knew this too. What’s gotten into you?”

Barry looked around at the commotion that he’d started. Everyone was staring at him like he had spoken a different language.

“I need to go,” Barry said. Again, he sped off without a response.

You were Roy’s girlfriend. Not his. Tears pricked his eyes. But…you love Barry. Barry loves you. A sob escaped Barry’s mouth as he forced himself to run faster until his legs burned. You weren’t his anymore. He had all of this love to give you, and you were loving another person.

Then, his perfect life shattered.

Part Two

Zwei, Lord of Corgis, Matchmaker Supreme (RWBY AU Snippet)

This snippet is a followup to this.

Her Royal Highness Princess Weiss of Atlas gave a deep, deep sigh as she watched her father open the capital’s newest temple. It was one thing to have an absolutely gigantic temple to Death. The goddess had recently dealt with their problems by putting an end to their drought, threatening to smite their enemies, and stopping what seemed to be a never-ending succession of natural disasters.

Why?

Apparently, Death felt kind of bad about Weiss passing out on the floor of her inner sanctum in nothing more than a silk robe. Oh, and apparently, everyone was now convinced that she was Death’s concubine after Death’s high priest and high priestess had stumbled upon Death trying to help Weiss after she’d passed out.

At least, that was what Death said.

According to the high priest and high priestess, Death had been ravishing her with merciless abandon, leading to Weiss passing out from the unbridled pleasure of being taken by one of the most powerful of the gods.

Weiss’s eye twitched. She was pretty sure she’d remember if that had happened, and Death had seemed just as horrified as her about the rumours. Death’s sister, Yang, the Goddess of War, had even made a brief appearance a few days ago to point and laugh at them as the rumour had gained more and more traction.

Good grief. Weren’t the gods supposed to be beings of unparalleled might and wisdom? Instead, she’d found out that Death was addicted to cookies and that Death’s sister loved to prank her by doing things like adding ‘sexy princesses’ to the list of acceptable offerings.

And now Death’s clergy were adding to their many, many, many eccentricities. They had convinced her father that the kingdom needed to thank Death for her recent generosity, and that was on top of convincing her father that Weiss was now Death’s concubine, which meant that Weiss was now the official go-to person whenever they needed Death’s help, which in turn meant another trip to the inner sanctum in a silk robe with a plate of cookies.

And what better way to thank Death than to build a temple next to hers for her beloved dog?

Yes, that was right. Death had a dog. A divine dog, who was apparently the Lord of Corgis. Weiss covered her face with her hands. What kind of world did they live in when there was such a thing as a Lord of Corgis?

As her father finished dedicating the temple, there was a brilliant flash of light before a dog appeared.

“All hail Zwei, Lord of Corgis!” the high priest cried. “Bow before his cuteness!”

To Weiss’s abject horror, people began to bow. Was this real life? Within moments, Weiss realised that she was the only one not bowing. Her father glared at her. If bowing to a dog was necessary for Atlas to survive, he’d do it, and he expected the same of her. However, before she could bow, Zwei trotted over to her.

Weiss looked down. The dog was exceptionally cute and adorable. Indeed, if the gods themselves radiated the very essence of power and majesty, then Zwei radiated the very essence of cuteness and adorableness.

The dog nudged her leg and wagged his tail.

The high priestess looked at Weiss. “Pick him up, Your Highness. He likes being carried. He makes us carry him whenever he visits. As Death’s new concubine, it is your sacred duty!”

“I am not her… fine.” Weiss reached down and picked up Zwei. The dog wasn’t very heavy at all, and he gave her face a friendly lick. “What now?’

“Now… you carry him until he either wants to get down or leaves,” the high priestess replied. “Or until Death arrives. She usually lets him come down here if she’s busy, and she comes to collect him when she’s done with whatever she’s doing.”

“Busy?” Weiss frowned. Death being busy probably wasn’t a good thing. There must be some awful, horrible war or plague going on. “Fine. I guess I’ll manage.” Zwei smiled at her, and Weiss found herself smiling back. He really was adorable. “What do we feed him?”

Death sighed. “Nora, what have I told you about smiting stuff?”

The Goddess of Thunder, Storms, and Smiting Stuff shuffled her feet nervously. “Um… to not smite stuff without checking first?”

Ruby pointed at the huge, gaping hole in the sky that was surrounded by towering pillars of lightning. “Look at the sky. Just look at it.”

Nora huffed. “A dragon tried to eat Ren!”

Ruby looked over at the mortal who was still staring at the sky in disbelief. “Nora, you could have asked me if Ren was going to die.” She looked over at Ren. “You weren’t going to, by the way. You’d have escaped with a little bit of singing and a limp that would have gone away after a couple of days.”

“Uh… great,” Ren said.

“Anyway, even if you had to kill the dragon, you didn’t have to tear a hole in the sky. We’re going to have to fix that, and mortals are going to be freaking out all over the world until we do. I’ve already got people praying to me for help in the coming apocalypse. They think its the end of the world, Nora.”

Nora hefted her hammer. “If that dragon didn’t want to get annihilated, it shouldn’t have tried to eat my mortal.”

Ruby looked at Ren. This was getting ridiculous. This was the third time this month that Nora had gone overboard smiting something that had so much as looked at Ren funny. She needed to deal with this. Sighing, Ruby wove her power into charm and handed it to Ren. “Here. This is a get out of jail free card. If something would kill you that isn’t supposed to kill you, it will trigger and send you to Nora.”

Nora’s eyes narrowed. “You’re giving him one of your charms? You better not be trying to steal my mortal, Ruby.”

“I’m saving us all a lot of trouble. This way, you won’t have to worry about something eating Ren or murdering him while you’re busy.”

“I guess…” Nora shrugged.

“Good.” Ruby took a deep breath. “You’re going to need to speak to Glynda about this.”

“What?” Nora wailed. “But I don’t want to…”

“She’s the one who has to fix it, and since you broke the sky, you’re the one who has to explain to her how it happened. Me? I’m going to go pick up Zwei. He’s in Atlas.” Ruby grinned. “They actually built him a temple.”

Weiss had somehow been roped into giving Zwei a bath. How exactly did one go about bathing the Lord of Corgis? The answer was with a great deal of effort. The canine seemed to find splash her with water to be absolutely hilarious, which meant that Weiss was completely drenched.

She’d finally managed to give the dog a bath, so she’d decided to give herself one as well while Zwei waited outside. Unfortunately, she hadn’t counted on the dog’s ability to walk through a door like it wasn’t even there.

“Get out!” Weiss shouted, pointing at the door. “I’m having a bath!”

The dog tilted his head to one side, smiled, and then promptly headed for the door - with her clothes in his mouth.

“Ah!” Weiss lunged after the dog. Sure, she was naked, but he was dog. He wouldn’t care.

Death appeared at that exact moment.

“Huh…” Death stared from the clothes in Zwei’s mouth to the princess whom they belonged to. “Bad dog.”

“Your Royal Highness,” one of Weiss’ maids opened the door. “Is the Most Honoured Dog in… oh.” The maid looked from Death to Weiss, ignoring the dog who was happily wagging his tail. “I see.” She bowed low. “Please, forgive me Most Honoured Goddess. I can see that you and Her Royal Highness are about to be very busy. By all means continue. But I beg of you, please remember that the princess has a diplomatic ball to attend tomorrow night. She will need to be able to walk.”

Death stared. “Why wouldn’t she be able to walk?”

“Because of how thoroughly you will undoubtedly be ravishing her.” The maid nodded sagely. “Your clergy were most clear on this matter, Most Honoured Goddess. We are to let you ravish the princess as mercilessly as you wish since she evidently enjoys it immensely.”

“…” Weiss tried to say something, but her mind was drawing a big, incoherent blank due to her overwhelming embarrassment and rage.

“You should probably go,” Death said to the maid. “Otherwise, I might be coming for your soul sooner rather than later.”

“Ah.” The maid quickly retreated. “Thank you for the warning.”

Weiss’s subsequent scream of frustration was heard throughout the palace and was taken to be yet another sign of Death’s incredible prowess as a lover.

When Liam first began working with him at the shop, there were more than a few perplexed - if not downright hostile - glances.

That was to be expected: it is unusual for an Irregular of Liam’s degree to be allowed to live to adulthood, and when it does happen they aren’t usually seen in shops. They usually are given a job as a Government Office clerk of the seventh class, a boring low-paying job, and expected to sleep at the workplace as well. Most families are all right with never seeing them again, the stain gone from their household.

But theirs is not most families, and Bill has better connections than most Triangles do.

Here’s the thing. Your mom always taught you to be kind to your neighbors. When you’re out of town for a business trip, who’s the most likely to help babysit your cats? Your next door neighbor. And what if one day you get kidnapped, who will be the first to notice you go missing? Your next door neighbor, of course.

So when sweet old Mrs. Baek moved out and was replaced with a chiseled, leather-clad, young man, you were determined to make him your next insurance. But here’s the other thing…you and the elderly, you guys mesh like peas in a pod! But young men your age, particularly handsome, chiseled, leather-clad men…not so much.

“What do leather-wearing young dudes like, Tuna?” you asked your orange tabby as you dug your way through the ingredients in your fridge.

Your grey cat, Sundae, purred against your legs at the sight of the open fridge. You smile at the hungry feline before closing the fridge and picking her up into your arms.

“Sundae? Shall I make him sundae, Sundae?” you coo, snuggling into the grey ball of fluff. You put your cat down and settle down on the kitchen floor, thinking seriously about making him a meal. Young men usually liked home cooked meals right?

You rise back up, determined to start cooking. You weren’t the best cook out there, but you weren’t bad either. Besides, it’s the thought that counts, right?

-

And so there you were, at his front door with three containers full of sundae, scallion pancakes, spicy rice cakes and a thermos full of kimchi chigae. He was bound to like one of these. You stood at his door for another minute, trying to gather your thoughts.

Say hi.

Introduce yourself.

Remember to smile.

Please don’t stutter.

Be confident, Y/N!

And then the door flew open, catching you off guard. Your eyes grew wide as you found yourself standing right in front of your new neighbor. He was even better looking up close.

“F-f-f-food…” your stupid mouth managed to bumble out.

“Huh? Uhh…I didn’t order anything,” he looked at you confused. You could feel your face growing hot with embarrassment as you shook your head in reply.

“Ah, no, umm…I meant…” you let out an exhausted sigh, closing your eyes to compose yourself. _Imagine he’s an old man. An old man like Mr. Lee from down the street. “Hi.”

He let out an amused chuckle. “Hello?”

You smile, a bit relieved. He looked less scary when his eyes were curled into crescent shapes.

“Umm, I’m sorry,” he said again, breaking you away from your trance. “I’m a little busy right now.”

“Ah…okay,” you mutter as you watch him pass you by and enter the waiting taxi across the street.

You looked at the bags of food in your arms in defeat. Sighing, you place the food by his door. You’ll just tuck a note in there to let him know your intentions. You were going to make him like you whether he wanted to or not.

-

A week passed and you made no progress. In fact, you had actually lost your Tupperware in the process. But were you going to give up? Absolutely not!

“Absolutely not!” you said aloud to Tuna and Sundae as if to reassure yourself. Ignoring your newfound energy, the cats stretched lazily before going back to their evening nap. You walked to your closet, hesitantly taking out your workout gear.

Every morning, without fail, your neighbor had gone running. Afterword though, he would disappear in a taxi and wouldn’t come back until late at night. You knew this from the two loud slams of the door he made when leaving for the day and then coming back home. You wonder if he had even eaten your home cooking. Nevertheless, you set your alarm clock to 5AM sharp. You were determined to be a kind neighbor!

But at the violent ring of your phone alarm going off at dawn, you suddenly didn’t feel so kind. You groaned, forcing yourself to rise from the safe and warm embrace of Tuna and Sundae who were snuggled closely across your neck and leg.

The cats groaned at your rustling but found solace in the warm empty space you left behind. You rolled your eyes at them, wishing you could switch places with them. Although you had to admit, if Tuna and Sundae were in your place they probably would’ve already been good old friends with your neighbor by now.

With one last exhale, you changed into your workout gear and reluctantly left the house. Outside was still cold. The sun hadn’t even risen yet. You looked across your yard to his door. No sign of life. After standing at your door for a few minutes you started to worry if he had already gone running.

But to your relief his door opens and there is your handsome neighbor in his running gear that hugs him in just the right places. You blush when he turns your way. He gives you a slight nod before walking down his steps. You follow quickly.

You were so determined to meet him again that you actually hadn’t planned what you were going to say when meeting him.

“M-Morn-” you started as you approached him.

However, maybe you had said it too softly, but he began lightly jogging away. You blushed with embarrassment, feeling silly after being ignored. But you were already outside and squeezed tightly into workout clothes you hadn’t worn since last summer. Nothing was going to stop you now!

And then he started sprinting.

You huffed after him, feeling your heart beating violently against your chest as your face grew hot with exhaustion. The cold morning air wasn’t much help as it entered your lungs, leaving you wheezing desperately.

You slowed to a stop, landing on the grass in defeat. By now he was already long gone out of your sight. You heaved in disappointment, trying to catch your breath and soothe the ache in your shins.

“Maybe this wasn’t a good idea,” you mutter to yourself, blowing at the hair in your face. You stretch out your legs, staring at the sky that was slowly glowing with soft orange hues. At least you had a pretty sunrise to pacify your painful exhaustion.

As you watched the sun slowly rise from the horizon, you could understand why he got up so early. This was a pretty sight to see.

You were ready to walk back home now when you felt a tap on your shoulder. You turned around, tearing your eyes from the sky only to see your neighbor looking at you with concern.

“Is everything okay?” he asked, taking a seat beside you.

“A-ah, y-yeah,” you quickly mumble, trying hard not to stare at the sweat running down his face and dripping to his collar bones.

“I’m Im Jaebum by the way,” he introduced, sticking out his hand towards you. You take his hand gently, trying hard not to smile too widely.

“Y/N,”

“Sorry about before, Y/N,” Jaebum looked at you with a sheepish smile. “I didn’t mean to be rude when I walked away suddenly.”

You shake your head vigorously. “No, no it’s okay. I was the one who stopped by so suddenly.”

He looked at you for a moment. “Are you sure you’re okay? You’re wheezing.”

You turned red with embarrassment, trying to breathe less so he wouldn’t hear.

“I’m fine,” you mutter with constricted lungs.

He laughed, his eye curling as he patted your back soothingly. “No, please, breathe normally. The wheezing should subside once your body finds its balance again. Do you have asthma?”

You shake your head, watching as Jaebum grabs hold of your hand, placing two fingers softly against your pulsating wrist. You blush. His fingers are a bit rough but have a warm touch.

“Must be the cold air then. Don’t force your body to run too hard, it’ll only hurt your body more in the long run.”

You nod softly, glancing up at his face as he stares down at your wrist. At a closer look, he didn’t seem as scary as he did in his leather jacket. His brown hair fell delicately over his eyes. He was literally glowing with the sun shining on his face.

You gulped, looking back down before he caught you. “Are you a doctor?”

He lifted his head with a smile. “No, actually I work at a local clinic. I’m a physical therapist for people with disabilities.”

“So you’re a doctor,” you smiled, noticing his tone shifting as he talked about his profession.

He chuckled softly, a glint in his eyes at seeing your own smile. “Tell my parents that.”

“But you are!” You say, trying not to yell it. “Sounds like you’re doing something great and meaningful. What parent wouldn’t be proud of a son like you?”

He looked away shyly. “You’re really good with your words.”

You laugh at this. “Actually, I’m a writer. Nothing big though, just small stuff for a magazine.

“Oh really? I’d love to read some of your stuff.”

You chuckle. “My cats will be so relieved to know I’ve found someone new to read to.”

Jaebum’s ears perked up at this. He turned to you with a wide smile. “Cats?”

“Tuna and Sundae,” you say proudly. You could see his eyes widening with excitement.

“I have three cats,” Jaebum said enthusiastically. “Nora, Odd, and Kunta.”

You can’t help but squeal a little. You loved meeting fellow cat lovers. You wheezed out a cough, your lungs constricting from the feelings of excitement. Jaebum laughed, rubbing your back again.

“You don’t run much do you?” he chuckled.

You blush. “Not really. To be honest, I was just trying to talk to you…so I could formally introduce myself.”

He grinned. “You know you could just knock on my door, right?”

“But where’s the excitement in that?” You joke. “I’m a writer remember?”

“Ah, of course, of course.”

“But in all seriousness, it did feel like this was my only option. You leave so early and don’t come home til late at night.”

“Ah yeah, sorry about that. My schedule has been hectic since I’ve just moved in.”

“No need to apologize. I feel sorry for your cats though.”

“Oh, I see you’re the guilt-tripping type.”

You laugh, halfway coughing again, but the pain was all worth it. I mean, look at you now, having a better conversation than you’ve ever had with Mr. Lee or Mrs. Baek. “Did you try the food?”

He stopped rubbing your back and gave you a thumbs up. “It was the best meal I’ve had in years!”

You look up in surprise. “R-really?”

He nodded. “I’m so grateful to have such a kind neighbor.”

“Ayy, you shouldn’t eat random food outside your door though,” you teased, trying to hide the blush growing from his compliment.

He chuckled. “But you left a note.”

“Ah, that’s true,” you agreed thoughtfully.

“I’m sorry about the containers. I’ve been meaning to give them back to you, it’s just…”

“Oh, it’s alright. Take your time, I know you’re a busy person,” you reassure him with a smile. He looked at you, his cheeks turning slightly pink. He rubbed the nape of his neck, looking away from you.

“I guess that too, but…mostly, I’m just not good at talking to pretty girls.”

Your eyes widen as your lips curl into a smile reflexively. “P-pretty?”

“Ahhh~!” he yelled in embarrassment, hiding his face in his arms. You laugh as his ears go bright red. You were glad you weren’t the only one feeling shy.

“And this whole time I thought you were going to be a scary new neighbor,” you chuckle. “Turns out you’re just a soft cat dad.”

He chuckled, lifting his head from his hands. “Well, turns out you’re prettier in person.”

You blushed, looking away shyly.

“I mean, kind of a stalker too,” he added jokingly. “But seeing as you’ve suffered enough this morning, I’ll let it slide.”

He winked at you teasingly.

“You should stop by my clinic one day,” he offered. “Some physical therapy might help you out.”

You roll your eyes at all his teasing.

“Well, if you’re being so kind, I’d also like to offer my hand in caring for your cats when you’re gone. Since I work at home,” you grin mischievously. “Some human presence might help them feel less neglected.”

Jaebum stared you down, his mouth slightly open in dismay.

“Wow, Y/N, you’re kind of savage.”

“But still pretty right?” You smile sweetly. “Jaebum-sshi, I’m pretty right? Still pretty?”

Trying to conceal his smile, Jaebum rose from his seat on the grass. You laugh, watching him walk away. You quickly rise, following after him, giggling the whole way home as he tries his best to ignore you.

Guy Talk

“I need advice.”

That sudden statement to Oscar Pine and Jaune Arc after they had just gotten back to their Inn after daily training (with Nora and Ruby conspicuously absent) left them staring down Ren for a few seconds before the blonde responded. “Okay, who are you and what have you done to my teammate?”

“I’m being serious Jaune, I need advice on what to do with Nora!”

“Seriously, if you’ve hurt Ren, you won’t get a chance to think before she kills you!”

Oscar sighed, feeling a sense of calmed assuredness that might have come from his predecessors’ experiences. “Jaune, stop yanking his chain. Ren, maybe you could clarify what you mean. From my point of view, you and Nora don't  seem to be having any obvious problems.”

Ren sighed before he went on to explain. “Well, we’re technically not….it’s this whole situation that’s kind of the issue.”

Jaune spoke as he put away his and Oscar’s gear for the day. “What do you mean by that?”

“I’ve been hanging with Nora around the city a lot more recently considering how Qrow is giving you guys and Ruby private lessons. I’m not complaining about that, I completely understand why given Ruby was his original student and you two seriously need the instruction. You’re lucky to have it.”

Oscar smiled. “Good to know how you feel.”

Jaune’s expression was utter deadpan. “I’d say you’re the lucky one. I swear that guy gets off on making me suffer.”

The wizard in the farm boy’s head chimed in, unknowingly to the other two. Oh please, compared to my mentor, you two are getting off easy.

Before Oscar could get into another conversation completely in his head, Ren continued the discussion. “Anyway, ever since Kuroyuri, hanging out with Nora…it feels like things have changed between us.”

Jaune asked. “Is it a bad change?”

The usually calm young man shook his head. “No, not at all! It’s really nice. But it’s like she’s kind of expecting me to do more since I grabbed her hand on the airship. Before Beacon had fallen, I knew what I wanted. Become a Huntsman, get a house in Vale, settle down with Nora…”

Oscar was rather surprised at the forethought. “You were thinking that far ahead?”

“I was planning on proposing when we graduated. But with the way things are now….so much has changed and I don’t know what I should do. After all, there’s a very real possibility that we’re all not going to make it out of this. So, I don’t know where that leaves things.”

Oscar winced before he went on. “Yeah….I can understand that. But at least there’s nothing really keeping you from acting on your feelings.”

Now it was Ren’s turn to be a little surprised. “Really? From my point of view, you and Ruby seem to have good chemistry with each other.”

“Well, it’s kind of complicated to explain, but just because I feel that way about her, doesn’t necessarily mean I can act on those feelings. And no, it has nothing to do with Qrow or anybody else in her family.”

Yes, that was a cold bitter fact Oscar had to swallow. Just because he liked Ruby, doesn’t mean he could truly act on those feelings. Aside from the obvious world ending war coming up (not explicitly stated but implied), having Ozpin be privy to his innermost feelings and private moments with Ruby was more than uncomfortable, it was mortifying. Not to mention, the memories of the loved ones of his previous lives could pop up at any minute. That’s not even getting into Ruby’s issues. Sooner or later, she would want answers and telling her the full truth would shatter what trust they had. They could be friends, they could flirt, but a real relationship was something that wasn’t possible for them with the way things were.

The farm boy then came back to the conversation. “Anyway, it seems to me you and Nora are doing fine. I think maybe you’re worrying a little too much.”

Ren nodded, his expression contemplative. “I suppose that might true. So, should I just take it as it comes?”

Jaune then spoke up. “I’m not so sure that would be best.”

Both black haired young men turned to the blonde, Oscar being the one to ask the question. “What do you mean?”

“Well, Ren you obviously care about Nora in the romantic way from what you’ve been saying, not just as a friend or family.”

His teammate leveled a raised eyebrow at him. “I thought that would be obvious by this point.”

“What I’m trying to get at it is if you were planning on proposing to Nora, when were you planning on dating her, or more specifically, when were you going to tell her how you feel?”

Ren opened his mouth before slowly closing it as he considered the question.

Jaune explained as he went on. “I mean, you two have definitely been together long enough that maybe you don’t need to date to see if you’re compatible like other people have to, but you still need to tell Nora that your feelings have changed.”

“I….thought it was obvious to her that I cared about her.”

The blonde stared down Ren incredulously. “Yeah, as a friend, but not romantically. Or was the together not together thing not obvious? Face it, Nora’s idea of subtlety is breaking someone’s legs.”

The Mistralian born teen nodded slowly. “I suppose that was a presumptuous thought on my part.”

Oscar then added his own thoughts to matter. “Yeah, I mean what if Nora had started dating someone else at Beacon? Or what if you had found someone else and your feelings had changed? These things do happen. And if by some chance the two of you had remained single, getting a proposal out of the blue after four years of no expressed romantic interest would come across less romantic and instead kind of cold. At least, that’s my opinion, I get the feeling Nora would like some romance.”

Ren took in those thoughts, before groaning as he hung his head. “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Jaune shook his head with a sigh before his eyes took a somber tone to them. “You focused so much on the logical side of your relationship and completely forgot the emotional aspect. Listen Ren, if there is anything I have learned from my relationship with Pyrrha is that the key to a strong relationship is open honest communication. You both need to know what the other wants from each other. You know what you want, but what does Nora want? Until you guys get to an understanding, I don’t see you guys really progressing.”

Ren slowly nodded. “You make some good points. You’re right, I really do need to have a talk with Nora.”

“Well what you know, a couple of teenage boys are more mature about relationships than some adults I know.”

Said young men turned to find Qrow Branwen in the corner, looking particularly amused at them all.

Jaune threw an irate glare at the older huntsman. “You’re not exactly the pinnacle of maturity yourself.”

The man’s tone sharpened before returning to normal. “I haven’t been in a relationship for quite some time and believe it or not, I was completely serious when I was. But that’s not what I came to talk to you guys about. I was hoping you guys could come down and help and break up the mini food fight the girls caused down in the lobby.”

Oscar’s voice was full disbelief. “We’ve just been talking about them and they were in the middle of ‘fighting’ each other?”

Ren, on the other hand, was back to being even tempered as usual. “I feel like this is the opposite of how it’s expected when boys and girls are separated.”

“I could mention a few stories when Tai and I were left on our own on the girls' nights out, but now’s not the time! I can’t control that Valkyrie girl and Ruby isn’t exactly happy with me at the moment after she found out about some stuff I was making you two do for training.”

Jaune seemed to smirk at that, muttering worth it, getting a premium quality glare from the huntsman.

Ren and Oscar looked at each other before sighing in unison and walking towards the door. “I take Ruby, you take Nora?”

“I just hope whatever stains she’s no doubt already gotten on her clothes are easy to get out.”

“You know Ren, you already sound like you and Nora are married.”

“You’re not the first person to say that to me.”

The two went down the hall, leaving the blonde huntsman in training alone with the actual huntsman of the group. It was silent for a few moments before Qrow broke ice. “So, I take you haven’t decided to abandon the path of a huntsman and turn to counseling? Because that was on par with some of the best relationship advice I’ve heard period.”

Jaune snorted before speaking. “Don’t worry, you won’t be losing your punching bag for stress relief any time soon.”

Qrow’s smirk was positively devilish. “I’m only hard on you so that you’ll be able to get to the level you need to be at. Though, I won’t deny I get some amusement from watching you squirm.”

“You have issues.”

“So does everyone who’s in this line of work, some of them are just a lot more obvious about it. Anyway, let me pass on a piece of advice to you. I know you and that Pyrrha girl were close and the idea of getting romantically involved again isn’t something you can see doing right now, if ever.”

“Get to point.”

“What I’m trying to say is that just because you’ll never love someone else the same way you loved her, doesn’t mean you’ll never love again. And that’s not just limited to romance, you’re allowed to find another partner as well.”

Jaune crossed his arms, his blue eyes as hard as gemstones. “Just because I understand what you’re trying to say, doesn’t mean I want hear it.”

“Just the fact you’re listening is fine for now. Anyway, while those four are sorting that problem out, how about a rematch?”

“You’re a really sore loser, you know that old man.”

Qrow’s red eyes sharpened as he went to go get the game. “One, don’t ever call me old. Two, that was luck. Third, this is just to satisfy my curiosity.”

Whew, done. Seriously, this ideas of mine take a while to put up. I just thought this up after considering the ever present trope in some movies and tv shows for guys to just fight with each other while girls just talk about the boys they like. Believe me, it’s very annoying how that’s a thing.

Though, what could Qrow be curious about? What caused Oscar to change his actions toward Ruby? I’ll probably get to writing to those instances later.

Hope you enjoy!

The Oracle

A/N: I bring you the thing I had wanted to write in like forever: the saltiest reunion yet. But come on, did you really think I’d leave this character out? Not a chance.

Part 2

“He is awake.”

“So soon?” Jheselbraum casts a look at at dimension 46’/, where Mabel Pines reaches to shake the hand of the monster they defeated only a year or so ago. “I would have expected at least a few more centuries.”

“I’m sure you know that time is relative.” The is a tone of amusement in the Ancient’s words. “It has been a lot longer than that.”

The Oracle takes that in, watching the events in Stanford’s home dimension play out, and hums in amusement, “‘A different form’,” she repeats to herself, “You couldn’t resist the irony, could you?”

The Axolotl chuckles, “Rather fitting, considering the many times humanity was deceived by him.”

With Everything I Have - Yatori

Yatori Week: Day 1 - Fluff/Promise

By - bromple

Hiyori was on the brink of insanity.

She had just barely gotten out of school for the day, and already Yato wasted no time in dragging Yukine along with him to Kofuku’s place where Hiyori would be spending the night. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem. Except this time, the subject Kofuku seemed to be stuck on like glue, was boys.

More specifically, boys she had crushes on.

So here they were now, huddled in an abnormally small blanket fort on a stormy afternoon, Hiyori’s face hidden in a pillow, red as a ripe tomato.

“Oh, come on. You can’t possibly be telling me there isn’t anybody from your school who you like!” Kofuku stated bluntly, regarding but ignoring Hiyori’s exceptionally flustered state.

“Yes, I am telling you that! Why won’t you believe me?” Hiyori answered in all honesty, face still burning as it has been since she entered the damned blanket tent of doom. Thunder clapped outside as the hard pitter-patter of raindrops swarmed outside the small house belonging to a small, yet determined, God of Poverty.

Kofuku chose to ignore her statement altogether and answered her question with another. “Fine. I’ll stop talking about boys from your school.” She sighed, faking reluctance.

“Thank you.” Hiyori let out her own satisfied sigh, thankful that the conversation stopped before it could get to-

“So how about boys from outside of school, then?”

Hiyori’s heart fell into her stomach. She knew this conversation would inevitably end with him. Yato. It always did. All of the other times Kofuku talked about how cute of a couple they would be, or how they would be like the perfect parents for Yukine, or even how he would give up his immortality and godship in a heartbeat if it meant being with her. Of course, everyone knew Kofuku was only kidding.

Well, to an extent.

That didn’t mean it hurt Hiyori any less whenever she was reminded that nothing could ever happen between them.

Of course, she knew he could never feel the same way. Sure, he joked about marrying her someday, and she knew he cared for her as much, if not more, as she did him.

Regardless, Hiyori had only just come to terms with her growing feelings for the minor God. Whenever she saw him, it was like that day at Capypa Land all over again, with his hands over hers, his bright blue orbs boring into hers as they both replayed all of those times Hiyori had vowed to never forget him. To never leave him. To be with him forever. And in that moment, under the light of a thousand stars, (and conveniently placed fireworks) she knew. She knew she was in love with him.

Of course, she thought bitterly. Of course my high school crush just had to be a freaking God of Calamity.

The sound of the blanket fort’s entrance flap opening snapped her out of her thoughts, as the exact person plaguing her mind had entered the fort without any indication whatsoever.

“Hiyori, Yukine won’t do the homework you gave him!” Yato loudly declared as he plopped down face-first into a pile of pillows near Hiyori’s legs. “Can you scold him?” He continued, despite the obvious eye roll the young girl gave him.

Hiyori pushed all immediate thoughts about Yato’s beautiful eyes and endearing childlike behavior aside as she yanked the pillow from underneath his head, forcing his face to collide with the hard, yet fluffy, blanket-covered floor.

“I just gave it to him a few minutes ago, he doesn’t have to do it right now.” Hiyori stated in an irritated tone. “Besides, why can’t you scold him?”

Yato sat up, scooting closer to Hiyori’s side as he rubbed his nose from the previous floor-to-face impact. “He won’t listen to me. Figures, with him being stuck in this rebellious stage and all.”

Hiyori began fiddling with the hem of her pink pajama shirt, immediately more self-conscious upon her and Yato’s close proximity. “I guess…” She answered rather awkwardly. Yato didn’t seem to pick up on it, though, as he absentmindedly threw a lazy arm around her shoulders, causing her to instantly relax, leaning into his slender frame and resting her head on his shoulder. She always felt cozier and at home whenever he did this, as cliché as it sounds.

Yato began rambling on and on about his week of job-hunting, Wish-collecting, and this one particular family he met that had fifteen missing cats. That story caused Hiyori to let out a rather unflattering snort of laughter, which Yato was more than happy to tease her about as she started swatting him in the face like a fly.

She didn’t know how much time had passed since he had entered the blanket fort, but judging by Kofuku’s sudden absence, it had been an extended amount of time. What the hell? Hiyori thought. I don’t even remember Kofuku leaving. Weird. Maybe she went to help Daikoku and Yukine with dinner. She had also noted that the storm was still going strong, so maybe not that much time had passed.

She hadn’t realized that she had been deep in thought until she was forced out of her own mind by Yato’s hand waving in front of her face.

“Hello? Anybody home?” Yato said sarcastically, though with slight and evident worry. “You’ve been spacing out all day. What’s wrong?” His tone taking a somewhat serious turn.

Hiyori chose to ignore her increasing heart rate when he spoke in such a caring, soft tone. “What do you mean? Nothing’s wrong.” She spoke lightly, although her voice wavered slightly. Damnit.

She hadn’t admitted it out loud yet, but something had been bothering her. Ever since the whole debacle with Yato in the Underworld, the conflict with heaven, and Yato releasing Nora as his Shinki, Hiyori had been a little…

On edge.

Okay, maybe more than just a little. A lot. But can you really blame her, though? What with all of this God of Fortune and heaven hullabaloo.

That was the entire point of this sleepover, actually. She didn’t feel as comfortable as she used to be at her own house. She felt a whole lot better around people who knew how to handle all of… this. Besides, these were people she trusted and cared for, people who were like her second family. People like Kofuku, Yukine, Daikoku…

And Yato.

Hiyori looked up at the former God of Calamity in resignation, knowing all too well that he caught on to her skittish behavior. She found that he was already staring into her bright coral eyes with overwhelming concern. “Hiyori, tell me.”

She had never heard him speak so gently before, so… affectionate. It made her heart and mind race more than he would ever know.

Ultimately, after several long seconds of staring into each other’s eyes, Hiyori put down her strong front, and voiced her concerns while fidgeting with the hem of her shirt once again, not able to meet his intense gaze.

“Well… It’s just that… Ever since, you know, everything, I haven’t exactly felt that… safe. I jump at every little thing, I flinch at every little touch, and I always feel like… I don’t know, like someone is watching me, or something.” Hiyori spoke with great reluctance, feeling the weakest she’d ever felt.

She spoke every word with such fear and uncertainty it made Yato’s heart ache. He wanted to destroy anyone and anything that made Hiyori think this way. Just the thought of her feeling like this for the rest of her life, all because of him, made him more determined than ever to make sure she would never have to face anything alone ever again. He would never leave her side, not as long as he was still breathing.

He thought back to the times when she forgot and remembered him. To the times when she said that she never wanted to leave him, that she wanted to be with him forever. He thought back to the times she had saved him, and vise versa. When the look in her eyes was more than evident enough to show him how much they meant to each other. He wanted, no, needed to protect that look in her eyes more than anything. The look of utter hope and faith she had in him, it made his mind and body simply melt with absolute adoration and protectiveness and love.

Hiyori looked up when she didn’t hear him respond after a few seconds, and she was not prepared for what happened next.

Before she could even comprehend what was happening, she felt Yato’s palms on both of her cheeks, cupping her face, and rested his forehead firmly against hers.

His eyes were like a bright blue sky, wild and free but calming and reassuring at the exact same time. They pierced her deep irises, searching through them and reaching the innermost depths of her soul. With gentle breaths softly colliding, he then spoke with one of the most serious, yet serenely doting tones she had ever heard him use.

“Hiyori, I need you to know, that I would never, ever let anything or anyone hurt you. Please tell me you know that.”

Hiyori was on the verge of tears. She had never heard him speak so fondly about something, about someone. And the fact that she was the one he let hear him speak like this, made her fall even faster and harder for the God that sat in front of her. And in that moment, she remembered that she was the opposite of weak. She was the strongest in the universe, as long as she had Yato by her side.

With a sudden surge of bravery, Hiyori scooted much closer to Yato, their noses brushing up against each other, and rested her hands on top of his. He let out a barely audible gasp when he felt the sudden warmth of her hands on his own, but simultaneously sending a shiver down his spine in delight. Their lips were centimeters apart, yet to both of them, it felt like miles.

Hiyori had never felt safer than she was in that moment, with her hands covering his while they rested softly on her face, each pair of eyes gazing into the others in complete trust and endearment.

The storm raging outside matched the hurricanes brewing within each of their hearts as they spoke thousands of unsaid words with their eyes, irises dancing synchronized in the eye of the storm, precisely in the middle of the intense range of emotions plaguing both parties, though neither ever wanted it to stop.

Finally, after what seemed like a lifetime of fast heartbeats and passionate stares under the evening downpour, Hiyori answered Yato with the most sincere and softhearted reply she could muster.

“With everything I have.”

As much as I don’t want to bicker with people...

The vast majority of people who are disappointed in RWBY Volume 4 are, for the most part, saying nothing happened. Like, literally nothing, at least that’s not important. Or if it did happen, it was stupid, problematic on the character’s end, etc.

I confess: while I’m not entirely blind to a story’s flaws, I do tend to focus on the pros of something more than the cons, as they’re the reason that I keep going back to something despite the problems. I like these parts of the show, ergo that’s why I’m still watching it. I prefer the positives being emphasized over the cons. That still doesn’t mean, however, I am going to completely ignore them or brush them off as minor.

From a technical standpoint regarding RWBY’s writing, the fatal flaw this show has no matter what is this: the shorter length of the episodes compared to other shows mean that getting through a MAJOR story arc takes a lot of time. The entirety of Volume 1 was introducing us to the world of Remnant. Both Volume 2 and Volume 3 were an entire arc story arc in themselves, as it was basically giving us the reason why the bad guys are such a threat. And Volume 4? Volume 4 is what we like to call a transition arc. The reason it feels like filler is because it’s trying to smoothly move us to the bigger story of Volume 5 instead of throwing a bunch of crap at us right away. Everything that happened in this Volume is setting us up for what’s coming next and making sure we have explanations for things, like the introduction of characters such as Oscar, Blake’s parents, Weiss’s family, and Cinder’s other associates. If you wanna look at it this way, it’s a passive volume in terms of storytelling, not active. That’s why it feels underwhelming to a lot of people.

Now for the elephant in the room: was this volume pointless because seemingly nothing happened? Hell no. This volume might not have gotten our blood pumping like the past volumes, but it did give a lot of insight to the characters and to Remnant. I’m not going to focus on things that I inherently found problematic IE the negative part of [character]’s introduction or stuff like that. Again, I like to focus on the bright side of things. I’m just going to highlight all the stuff that I thought Volume 4 did right. You can disagree with me, but hey, opinions are opinions, right?

The list

  • Remnant has finally been expanded beyond Vale. We actually got to see what the rest of the world looks like and understand why it’s so dangerous. Vale was constantly presented as a safe place and that did get boring after a while because we wanted to see the characters get into life-threatening trouble. Now? They presented things to us like how easy it is for small villages to get picked off by Grimm attacks.
  • Ruby is getting the screentime she deserves as a main character. I know people point out that she’s still feels as flat as cardboard as when she first appeared, but this volume finally did flesh out her character a bit more in terms of what’s going through her head. She’s learning that the world around her isn’t perfect and she’s also coping with upfront losses. While we know she lost her mother, it was stated that she was too young at the time to completely understand what was going on. Now? She’s showing a good deal of grief after seeing two friends die right in front of her last volume and is possibly starting to break from the pressure. (Which makes sense because she is two years younger than her teammates and JNR, making her more emotionally fragile because she hasn’t had those additional two years to mature.)
  • Expanding on Weiss’s family and getting a full explanation on why her childhood was so rough. Her mother is an alcoholic out of misery from her marriage, her father is only interested on preserving the image of the Schnee Dust Company, and Whitley has a passive-aggressive loathing of her and Winter. Only Winter is completely supportive of her and she considers Klein to be her family over her father, brother, and mother. I love Weiss showing an understanding that blood isn’t always thicker than water.
  • Sun getting better development as a character. I love this monkey boy for his personality and antics, but he’s honestly gotten more screentime than an actual understanding of what his character and motivations are. We know he’s attracted to Blake and his first time seeing her was oh hey you’re kinda cute, but a lot of what he said this volume basically solidifies that he sees her as a friend first and someone he’s interested in second, following her to make sure she didn’t hurt herself. He also doesn’t shove her relationships with her other friends to the side in favor of making it about himself. He brought up Yang in their conversation in episode 11 and made sure she understood that she was hurting everyone around her. Sun may be stupid at times, but he definitely isn’t selfish and self-centered.
  • Clarification on Blake being “born into the White Fang.” Since Volume 1, I had the impression that Blake was an orphan and was adopted by the White Fang even though it’s never stated, but her being the daughter of the previous leader actually makes sense and I do understand why she hasn’t brought her family up until this point; they left while she stayed. The fact that Kali and Ghira are shown to still to love their daughter despite that she essentially left them shows how much they care for her and that is really heartwarming.
  • Ren and Nora finally got the development we’ve been waiting for since Volume 1. Despite loving the two since their introduction, they’ve always been sidelined in terms of the Team JNPR development from my standpoint in favor of focusing on the Arkos duo. This volume, they got their backstory expanded on and we even got a bit of understanding on the nature of Ren’s personality and how it relates to his Semblance. (Although I do feel like they could have put more emphasis on Nora.)
  • The Nuckelavee Grimm. I know a lot of people saying that they built up this Grimm to be a lot more terrifying than it actually was when it was finally presented, but seriously? When that thing showed up in Ren and Nora’s flashback, I nearly pissed myself because it was that terrifying. And really, just think: there could be more of those things wandering around. What if it wasn’t just one, but two or three of them that attacked Kuroyuri? That’s worse to think about.
  • Jaune was actually bearable. Look, I won’t deny that I’m with the people who groan every time Jaune comes on because Ruby is shoved to the side every time. Here, he was actually put in more supporting, passive role. I liked his interactions with Ren and Nora and, looking at his relationship with Ruby, he did feel like a big brother to her. They are essentially helping each other hold up after Pyrrha’s death last volume and that, I think, is really important.
  • Yang’s interactions with Taiyang and understanding the dynamics of the Rose-Xiao Long family. I am one to agree that Yang’s “healing” from her PTSD felt rushed especially considering what real life PTSD is like, but it was nice to understand Taiyang’s feelings towards both his wives, as well as his worry regarding Yang wanting to find her mother. After all, Raven was shown in her interaction with Qrow that she gives jack shit about her daughter and the fact that Yang chose to go after her younger sister over Raven shows that Yang is more willing to go after someone she knows and cares about rather than a mother she knows little about.
  • This is more of a minor thing, but hey, it’s worth mentioning: NO ONE MAJOR DIED IN THIS VOLUME. THANK GOD, I WAS SO TERRIFIED FOR MY RENORA BABIES.

Bistre

Just a medium length arkos fluff piece. Fair warning, a decent amount of angst in the beginnings, and mentions of unhealthy relationships. So fair warning.

XxXxXxXxX

To say Pyrrha was a little sad would be the understatement of the century. It had finally happened, she had heard the words she had sincerely hoped to never hear come from Jaune towards her. The four words she had been worried about.

“I got a girlfriend!” The blonde had gleefully cheered out. He was beaming from ear to ear, like he had just won the lottery. Pyrrha felt something inside her crack, but took a deep breath. Forcing a smile to her face, she grinned and threw her arms around him in a hug, congratulating him. It was much easier to sound happy when he couldn’t see her face.

Nora offered her a sympathetic look, but also congratulated Jaune.

Now Pyrrha was rather fair minded. Honestly, she was happy for Jaune. She knew how much her partner craved a romantic partner. Ever since the dance, he had given up on pursuing Weiss. He had finally realized she was not interested in him romantically, and that it wasn’t actually just him screwing it up. He had seen past her harsh rejections to understand the rather obvious message that she wasn’t interested in him, and no approach or scheme would change the result. Apparently whatever talk he had had with Neptune had also improved Weiss’s opinion of him, especially once he no longer nagged her about a date.

Pyrrha had known that it was her chance. After he had shown up in a dress for her, she knew she couldn’t wait much longer. She hadn’t expected him to land a girlfriend so shortly after the dance though. As long as he was happy though, she would manage. She just hoped that her crush would fade eventually. She knew seeing her partner with another woman would certainly be painful.

As Jaune began to explain how the girl, Bistre, from team BICH, team Birch like the tree, had approached him and asked him to go on a date tomorrow.

One other fear had crept into her heart. Would Jaune start spending time away from his team to be with her? Would she slowly be shut out of his life and replaced with this new girl? Pyrrha wished for anything but that.
