Little Munson - Chapter 1

A/N - Welcome back to the story of Angel and Bobby Munson! Angel is finally in high school, which means new challenges for both her and Bobby. I tried a different format for this chapter, I’m trying to move the story along so we can get back into things! I have a lot of one shots that are planned to go with this. That’s the reason it’s short and time jumpy.  =D

The dame was lost.

That was obvious for anyone. She was pacing one of the hallways muttering to herself, all I could catch was ‘kitchen’ and ‘make a freaking map for this labyrinth.’

I cracked a smile as I made my way to her slowly, I don’t want to scare another person today, I think the other agent is fine but he shouldn’t have bumped into me so early in the morning.

I opened my mouth to ask where she needs to be, when she faced me.

Beat me daddy eight to the bar.

Character Development: Finding Your Character's Voice

Anonymous asked: I am writing a historical fiction based in the middle ages in first person from someone in modern time. When it comes to the dialogue I have managed to distinguish my MC without using a tag all the time. I am having trouble making dialogue that fits the time period and works with the rest of the characters. How can I differentiate each character so not to make them sound too repetitive and similar to each other?

Voice is a confusing and often overlooked aspect of character development. When we talk about voice, we’re sometimes referring to the writer’s voice–which is part of their writing style–but individual characters have their own voices, separate from each other and from the writer.

Think, for a moment, about people you know or favorite characters from TV or movies. Think about their personality, how they behave, and how they speak. Notice the way that their personality influences how they behave and how they speak?

For example: let’s say your Aunt Edna is a new age spiritualist. She has flowing gray hair, wears gauzy dresses with crystal necklaces, and she practices Reiki and observes the Celtic wheel of the year. Probably she has a matching personality: joyful but serene, wise but open, sensitive but grounded. All of these things are going to influence what she says and how she says them. If she’s into New Age and spiritualism, elements of these will pepper her dialogue. She might say things like, “thank the Gods” and “blessed be,” and talk about the waning moon, her plans for celebrating Imbolc, or the latest crop from her kitchen garden. If you walk into the house and she’s visiting, she’s going to smile broadly, maybe give you a gentle hug, and tell you some good news. If there’s drama going on, she’ll be calm and collected, probably offering sage advice and helping everyone see the big picture. If you upset her, her tone will be disappointed and she may frown, but she’s not going to lash out. All of this affects the way she sounds, and as a character, she has a specific voice.

By contrast, let’s say your Aunt Phoebe is Edna’s polar opposite. She’s conservative, a bit old fashioned, attends church but doesn’t discuss religion. She wears her hair short and spiky, hasn’t exercised since 1983, and hates all holidays except Thanksgiving and Christmas, which she tolerates begrudgingly. She never says, “Thank God,” because she never thanks anyone. Instead she says things like, “as if I care,” “I’m sick of hearing it,” and “haven’t you left yet?” She complains about the weather no matter what it is, says she’d rather swallow borax than come to your mom’s garden party, and doesn’t like to spend time outside. If you walk in and she’s visiting, her greeting expression is one of indifference and all she says is, “You look awful. Don’t you sleep?” If there’s drama, there’s a 90% chance she started it or is in the middle of it somehow. She’ll be the one making snarky comments and rolling her eyes whenever anyone else speaks. If you upset her, she’ll say, “What’s it to me? I never liked you anyway."

Now, consider the following exchange:

"Lissa, honey, could you hand me the coriander?”

“Sure, here you go,” I smiled. My aunt smiled too, and then lovingly sprinkled the spice on top of the other ingredients.

“It already says delightful,” she added, closing her eyes as she breathed in through her nose.

Just then the screen door into the kitchen opened and slammed shut. “Don’t you two ever do anything worthwhile?”

We watched as she shuffled past us, threw some mail onto the kitchen counter with a grunt, and moved on to the living room yelling to my mom. “Leanne! There’s a wasp nest on your driveway. Damn near got stung to death on my way in.”
Without using a single dialogue tag, I’m guessing you can tell which aunt was which. This is because they both have developed personalities which influence their voices: what they say, how they say it, and even when they say it.

So, the bottom line is you’re looking to really develop each of your characters to find out who they are and how they behave. There are lots of great character exploration exercises you can do. I posted these suggestions earlier, and Confessions of a Book Geek has this helpful list of ideas.
