what the hell do people in this fandom tag things as

This post was triggered by something that @roachpatrol said over here about the expectation for girls to be sweet and clean and harmless:

Holy shit, if I was eight years younger and wandering into fandom for the first time, I can guarantee that the culture right now would’ve fucked me up and ground me down and taken away all my healthy outlets.

Picture: you are a girl at the tender young age of mumbledyteen. Up until this point you have been taught that all dark thoughts are literally hand-delivered into your head by the devil, and that the only correct method of dealing with negativity is to ignore them and pray harder. Concentrate on what is good and righteous and pure to the exclusion of all else, this is how you be a good person.

You are also a fully-functioning human being, one who can feel stressed or lonely or angry or any number of bad things. Mostly, with emotions that are still working themselves out, you feel this rumbling, white-hot white noise under everything, all the time. Sometimes it rolls in like a thunderstorm and everything else gets drowned out, and sometimes it’s only quietly muttering in the distance. Either way it’s always there, and the sound shreds uncomfortably at the inside of your brain.

When you were younger, before you were in charge of your own media consumption, your brain would shred up a myriad of saccharine stories to try and match the noise of the shredder in your head. Bad things happening, people getting hurt, characters trapped in unhealthy relationships of all kinds.

Fanfiction, the product of a hundred thousand other mumbledyteens whose brains are all screaming the same way, makes something in your brain go ping

Unfortunately, if the planet had ever been united on any single message, it was probably that no matter how you feel: 1) your feelings weren’t unique 2) they didn’t matter 3) they didn’t matter because they weren’t unique, they were shared among millions of hysterical, worthless teenaged girls just like you.

Fandom was confirmation of the first, but (with some hiccups along the way) outright rejection of the last two. Fuck you, our feelings do matter, and this is a story just for us.

A disclaimer: these aren’t good stories, otherwise they wouldn’t have to be defended. Their flavor of topic is not within societally acceptable bounds. Fictional characters have sex and get tortured and raped and abused, but their screaming harmonizes with the pitch of the shredder when it’s burrowing deepest.

As a teenager I never thought that my feelings were important enough to deal with, but these stories let me look at them sideways. Audience catharsis is the whole point of tragedy, after all.

And hell, these days I’m a happy, healthy adult who barely even has the urge to go looking for whump fic when I’ve had a bad week. I’m not going to forget just how much bad stuff that fic helped me air out, though, not ever. (Not to mention that thanks to all of those abuse!fics, I can recognize an unhealthy relationship at 500 paces, even if the fictional abuse was depicted as something loving and romantic. Abusers in real life don’t go around with helpful warning tags on their sleeves anyway.)

But holy shit, can you imagine if I’d found fandom as it is today.

Yes, your church is right, your family is right. Horrible things in stories are only there because they were written by horrible people, and they’re only popular because horrible people read them. The very concepts they address corrupt everything they touch.

That shredder in your head, the one that takes innocent cartoons but then shits out sadness and mayhem? That’s disgusting, you’re disgusting. How dare you think about minors having underaged sex, you minor? How dare you consider another person getting hurt? Your feelings don’t matter, they aren’t unique, they’re shared with all kinds of worthless shitbags just like you.

Every ounce of what you read and write and enjoy is going to be weighed for sin and tested for purity. You know, just like the rest of your life, except this time there’s no deity who’s handing out second chances.

Maybe that’s what bothers me most about all of this. It’s the same petty fandom bullshit as always, but “you’re wrong for liking a ship because IT WILL NEVER BE CANON” is a hell of a lot easier to laugh off when you’re young than “you’re wrong for liking a ship because YOU’RE AN ABUSIVE PEDOPHILE AND IF SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS IT’S YOUR FAULT FOR PERPETUATING IT.”

My fault, my bad thoughts, no outlet for any of them. The message to repress all the bad things so I can look like a good person, but my brain is so full of unprocessed shit that it’s solidified. Nobody actually saved any real children, but my brain sure is getting a second dose of fucked-up.

Are the people getting attacked going to be okay, will they be able to go and address their braingremlins somewhere else? I’d also ask if the people doing the attacking are okay, with all of the denial and repression they must deal with, but it seems like they’ve got venting pretty well handled by taking it out on strangers.

Hey, c’mon, calm down friends. I bet I’ve read a story that’s got a character screaming at just the same pitch you are.

It helps to read one of those and harmonize your voices, I promise.

So you want to interact with a fanfiction author

Great! I’m glad you want to reach out and start a conversation with the many creative, giving people who take time out of their busy lives to pen the stories that have captured your imagination. This post is going to cover leaving reviews, giving constructive criticism, and a few do’s and don’t’s.

If you like a fic, leave a review! You can do this a couple different ways.

Reblogging with tags. Every single creative person I know, be they writer or artist or musician, religiously stalks the tags when people reblog their work. Tags are an amazing way to communicate with a creative, especially if you’re shy about sending them a message directly or are afraid your comment will go unnoticed in their inbox.

Don’t know what to say in the tags? Think about the moment you decided you were going to reblog this piece instead of just hitting the “Like” button. Was it a particularly well done piece of dialogue? A description that made you feel like you were a part of the story instead of just reading it? A scenario you’d never considered before but changed the way you thought about [character a, situation b, or fandom c]? There’s a reason you’re taking time to reblog instead of like, so let them know why! Not every reblog needs to be a tag flail.

Alternatively, you can send the author a message. Fanmail if you’re shy and don’t want your adoration made public. Sometimes, if I don’t have time to tag a fic the way I want for whatever reason, I’ll like the piece and then shoot the author a fanmail or an ask telling them what I liked. This is also acceptable. Who doesn’t like getting mail? Crazy people who don’t use social media, that’s who.

Ok, but wait. What if you DON’T like what the author has done with their fic? What then? Yes, there are options.

Option #1: You ignore the fic. You neither like nor reblog the story. You and the author both move on with your lives. You may choose this option at any time. It is not necessary to let the author or anyone else know you have chosen this option.

Option #2: Ask the author why they chose to go that route. Politely. We’ll go over what that means later.

Option #3: Give constructive criticism. Now. Be careful with this one. Creatives are sensitive people. Make sure the author is open to it before you go barrelling into their ask box. If you message me, even on anon, saying, “Hey, I just read your latest fic and I have some concrit I wanted to run by you. Is that ok?” that is perfectly fine. If my answer is yes, go for it. If not, see Option #1.

What is concrit? Glad you asked.

This is concrit: “I totally get the vibe you were going for with that scene, but I was a little confused about the angles of the body parts. I don’t think you meant for them to be doing xyz there. It just took me out of the moment a little.”

This is NOT concrit: “You’re actually not very good at writing smut. You should probably just let [other person] write it and stick to what you’re good at. Which is not smut.”

What’s the difference? In the first one, you acknowledge what you think the author was going for. You explain what has you confused. You explain how you interpreted it. And then you leave a way for the author to contact you to respond to the concrit. You could be right. Maybe the author’s beta was having an off day and missed that awkward elbow maneuver. Maybe they don’t have a beta.  Or maybe it’s you that’s missed something. The second example is rude. This criticism is not designed to help the author. It is designed to tear them down and discourage them.

Some people adore concrit. Some people only want it before they publish a piece. Some don’t want it at all. None of these are wrong.

SIDE NOTE FOR AUTHORS: If you ask for concrit, do not be upset, offended, or throw a tantrum when someone sends you a respectful message. You did not want concrit. You wanted to ask for concrit and revel when no one sent you anything. Those are not the same things. Concrit, when given correctly, is designed to make you, the author, a better writer.

Ok, let’s go back to Option #2 now. Where you liked the piece overall, but the characters are acting a little wonky. Something’s not quite right, you think. You don’t really have any concrit, but you want to say something. Here’s what you can do, especially if the author is posting a work in progress.

Acceptable: “Hey! I just read the latest chapter of [amazing story you’ve been following since day one]. I’m enjoying the story so far, but this last one has me a little confused. Why did [character a] do [this]? I feel they would have done [that]. Am I missing something?”

Not acceptable: “Your latest chapter was a big disappointment. I feel like you just don’t know the characters anymore. There’s no way in hell [characters a and b] would be [doing xyz]. I’m sorry, I’m unfollowing you.”

In the first example, you let the author know you like their work. You are making an attempt to understand their vision. You give them a specific example of what’s bothering you. You acknowledge that there may be things coming that you aren’t aware of yet. In the second, you’re an asshat who is wasting bandwidth. The tone has shifted from commenting on the story to commenting on the author.

And here are a few general DO’s and DON’T’S:

DO tell an author you are excited to read the next chapter.

DON’T send an author a message saying only “update soon” less than five minutes after the new chapter was posted.

DO speculate on what’s going to happen next.

DON’T tell the author how to write their story.

DO ask your author how the writing process is going.

DON’T ask your author why they haven’t updated yet.

DO send your author love.

DON’T send your author anon hate.

THERE ARE NO PROFESSIONAL FANFICTION AUTHORS. (We’re not gonna talk about she-who-must-not-be-named of the fifty shade variety). Every single fic author has a job, family, friends, school, religion, other hobbies, or sleep equally vying for their attention. Respect their time, respect their work, respect them as human beings, and we’ll all get along fine.

the funny thing about Blaque Widowmaker™ is that black people in this hell fandom started it as a joke hc and it became super popular bc the only way people tried to disprove it was through anti blackness and it became a joke among black ow fans

literally every argument against it stems out of antiblackness. “She’s french, she cant be black.” france has one of the highest black populations in europe. french names are super common throughout the entire african diaspora.      “she doesn’t look black.” she looked black enough for people to look at her lips and nose and think of a black woman. besides, what do black people look like to yall? What traits do you automatically associate with black people? Why does a nonblack person get to decide what features are black or not? Black folks come in every color there is. “She’s pale in some of her legendaries.” White passing black folks exist. “Her hair isn’t black.” Wigs, weaves and straighteners all exist. Black folks don’t all have one curl pattern either. Yall need to self examine yourselves and think about why black people seeing themselves in a video game character is so damn harmful.

Hey Voltron Fandom, what the fuck?

I’m going to get straight to the point, you guys are self-destructive and are going to kill the fandom over your petty arguments and stupid self-entitlement. There hasn’t been a day since the beginning of the fandom that everything has just been peaceful for once (and I’ve been here since it’s birth) You all should be ashamed of yourselves, fighting online and hurting real people over fiction (this is not specifically towards ships btw) And I’m putting my foot down at all of this bullshit and trying to stop it

This is pretty lengthy so everything is under the cut

You knew you’d fucked up.

The second those words flew out of your mouth, your eyes shot open and your breath caught in your throat. You were quickly shaken from the spell Daveed had placed you under, and as reality settled in, you began to panic.

Without delay, you pushed Daveed off you and clambered off the bed. He was silent and you didn’t know if it was because he was in shock or because he was still coming down from his high, but either way, you knew you had to get out of there before he started speaking.

You were pulling your jeans on hastily when you finally spoke up. “I uh…I-I gotta go.” You said, trying to hide the fact that you were on the verge of tears. “It’s really late and I think I forgot to do something back home.”

“Y/N…” Daveed breathed softly, pushing himself up on his elbows to look at you.

anonymous asked:

I don't watch voltron (I plan to but haven't had the time yet), so could you please explain the sheith discourse? Idk anything about any of the characters specifically, but just based on appearances I've always liked that better than klance.

Oh my sweet summer child, I wish you well if you ever decide to brave through this fandom hell. Okay so I’ll sum this up because honestly I do not wish to talk about this discourse anymore.

Everything started shortly after the show aired on Netflix on June 10th. Due to Keith’s and Shiro’s close bond, familiarity with one another and always attempting to protect each other, they became a popular ship. So popular in fact that Josh Keaton, Shiro’s voice actor, acknowledged this on his blog and even coined the name for the ship: sheith.

It didn’t take long until he and Neil Kaplan, Zarkon’s voice actor, started mentioning sheith on their twitters as well. To top it off, Chris Palmer, who directs the show, also made this Shiro drawing with the description “Shiro loves you, baby” and tagged “he is looking at Keith.” Honestly with so many people involved with the show (even if the VAs aren’t directly involved, it was still nice) showing support for the ship, and considering Montgomery and dos Santos who previously worked on The Legend of Korra are producers in Voltron, a lot of people believe they could become canon like Korra and Asami.

Things blew up however when SDCC happened in July. Tim Hedrick, Montgomery and dos Santos who were at the event were asked by a fan about the ages of the characters, since the only clue we had was the DreamWorks’ site saying they’re teenagers. Pidge is 14, Shiro is 25 at most and everyone else is late teens.

However, many fans interpreted it as proof that Shiro is factually 25 and the other three are 17 and claim that Shiro/Paladin ships are pedophilia, wrong, incorrect and a bunch of other nasty things. They use the video as confirmation and refuse each and any other evidence to contrary, even when it comes from the same people that were in the video. Some even attack the voice actors over it, which is why Josh Keaton stopped talking about ships altogether on Twitter. The truth is, most people before and after the video saw and still see Hunk, Keith and Lance as being 18-19 and Shiro as 20-22 at most, not 25 since he doesn’t even look that old.

There is a whole lot more to this story, including but not limited to the fact that the official comic still mentions they’re five teenagers even after the SDCC event, Josh Keaton confirmed on twitter that ages were never brought up during recording and how Hedrick, Montgomery and dos Santos refuse to answer any all questions regarding the ages, and someone found a video prior to the age video where Montgomery talked about Shiro being a student, not an instructor as people against the ship kept mentioning. Recently Pidge’s voice actor also snapchatted about Shiro/Keith and Shiro/Keith/Lance. Last week it was revealed that the garrison where the paladins previously studied at is college like education and a military base as well, meaning they couldn’t be younger than 18.

Tbh the whole thing is a mess, the only thing we know for sure is that the creators themselves apparently never gave this too much thought in the first place because they wanted people to see the characters as being the age they believe them to be. And now they either refuse to talk about it anymore or contradict each other in what they have to say about it, but antis refuse to stop and continue harassing shippers and the ship tags daily with violent threats and name calling.

Incidentally, NYCC is coming up this week and the same three crew members will there. It is speculated that more fans will ask them about the ages and I’m already dreading the next wave of shitstorm coming this friday.

For more about Shiro/Paladin discussions, this post is a good post about it.

Draco was protective of what was his, so when he saw a certain Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley trying to force what was his to ask someone on a date, he wasn’t happy. Not only that, but when Harry actually got up just to comply with what the two were telling him to do, he was practically furious- the wink Harry had given him as he passed wasn’t helping the situation either.

Draco had watched as Harry had slid in to a chair next to a pretty average looking girl and had begin to ask her about herself, as she was happily babbling on however, Draco was quick to get up and stalk over until he was hovering behind Harry.

‘Potter, a word with you? Now.’ Harry’s shoulders had tensed ever so slightly before relaxing and he had let out a groan before climbing out of his chair and looking up to Draco. Unfortunately for him Draco had grown exponentially since after the war, and Harry had seemed to have shrunk in comparison.

Draco lets out a low predatory growl, and Harry knew he was absolutely in for it, so instead of saying anything he began to walk out of the great hall, knowing Draco would be close behind after grabbing his bag and explaining why he was leaving so early to the rest of his housemates.

As soon as Draco is out of the large wooden doors, he stalks up to Harry and in one fluid movement he has him against one of the walls, their bodies flushed together and breath mingling in a hot flurry of lips and tongue. All too soon however Draco is moving away, leaving Harry breathless and flushed.

‘Mine, remember that Harry. Mine.’ Just to punctuate his words he leans down, hands purchasing against Harrys thighs and hoisting him up, leaving Harry to squeak and wrap his legs around his waist. He leans in ever so slowly, and with another whisper of ‘Mine.’ against the shell of his ear, he leans down and leaves a purple hickey sticking out against Harry’s adams apple.

Suffice to say, the next day for quidditch practice despite the heat Harry could be found wearing a turtleneck jumper and a blush on his cheeks whenever someone would ask him why he was wearing such a ridiculous piece of clothing when it was mid summer, both Ron and Hermione were curious as to why he would be wearing it too, but just shared a glance and stayed quiet about it.

Only after Gryffindor won the first quidditch tournament of the year did Draco truly get furious about the people surrounding Harry all the time, and even watched with a glower as the girl he dragged Harry away from pulls Harry in and kisses him hard, almost as possessively as Draco gives Harry kisses, and that stirred something in Draco.

Draco waits though, waits until he knows that Gryffindor and more will be watching. He knew that there would be a celebration of Gryffindor winning, so that’s exactly where he heads- straight to the Gryffindor common room, and of course he can get in because he knows it from all those times he and Harry sneaked in and out.

When he enters the common room, the atmosphere is bubbly until everything drops silent as he stalks further in to the room, until he’s stood in front of the fire, facing Harry. In a matter of moments, Harry is being pulled up by the chin and is being kissed, hard.

Laughter and cheers echo around the common room, until the two familiar voices of Ron and Hermione can be heard saying in unison- ‘What the hell?!’

Flowers for my sister

A/N: So when I was in Jr/Sr high they had fundraisers where for a dollar someone could buy you a rose & have it sent to on Valentine’s day. Throughout the day people would go into the classroom & pass out the flowers. They had notes on it with who it was from & whatever message they wanted. So I’m sitting here going “what fic should I write for Valentine’s day & this popped into my head.” Reader is Dean’s twin. The ending is kinda rushed but that’s because it’s bedtime but I wanted to post this on actual Valentine’s Day. Enjoy my loves.

“What?” You hissed at him.

“What’s going on? Why are you all, moody?” He asked.

“Nothing. Just drop it, okay?” You replied before taking a bite out of the lunch the school provided for you.

“It’s not nothing if you’re acting like a-” Dean began but was interrupted by Sam rushing over to the table.

“Y/N are you okay?” Sam asked, out of breath from running, “I heard what happened and ran ove-”

“I’m fine Sam. Just drop it. Both of you. Okay?” You told them.

“Sam. Spill. Now.” Dean demanded.

“Sam, you open your mouth and you’re gonna regret it.” You replied.

Sam looked between you and Dean; you were both his older siblings, both of you were his heroes, normally he did what you asked, but this time he couldn’t.

“It’s Valentine’s day right? So these guys-” Sam started.

“Seriously Sam. Drop. It.” You hissed at him.

s4, breaking the fourth wall, the arg, and gaslighting as literary device

And if the pretentious title didn’t frighten you away, or cause you to immediately unfollow / block me, I offer some thoughts:

Following the cues left by the hot mess s4, it’s reasonable to assert the following (which has been asserted just about non-stop since each of the episodes aired; I am not pretending to be original here):

  • s4 is fucky in a way that seems to call attention to its own fuckyness, especially if you take events and themes of the previous series as guidelines for what to expect / how things work in the world of Sherlock. (A ton of people have done a ton of work on this, but thanks to @antisocial-otaku for making it clear how frickin obvious this pattern is, here.)

As much as recent arg developments have been A Ride, I really think we’ve missed the obvious, because it wasn’t nearly as much of a challenge as people were looking for / as the fandom genius hive brain is capable of meeting. I think we’ve been looking too hard.

The puzzle, the thing we are supposed to figure out, is s4 itself. The game is simply this: we are invited to have discernment with regard to what is and what is not possible in the world of BBC Sherlock, and to conclude, as most people did, that much of s4 is, indeed, not compatible with the world of Sherlock. The truth of the narrative is in the subtext, as almost everyone here has argued.

The narrative of s4 is, for the most part, really hard to get hold of, and full of content that blatantly works against everything the show has tried to set up so far. As much as I appreciate attempts to make sense of s4 as is, my mind, like a lot of people’s, recoils when asked to consider (for example) that the people who wrote this:

.

Also wrote this:

.

You’ve all seen the evidence. You’ve all watched The Final Problem and thought–what the hell is this?

People in this fandom were crying foul from the moment TST ended. I think we were already playing the arg then (if such a thing exists), and we kept playing it all through s4, because we were thinking critically about the episodes, and questioning the reality status of the story with which we were presented.

Up until recently, I would have said, meh, maybe this apparent lack of skill on the part of the showrunners was deliberate, maybe it wasn’t. Maybe they just threw in a ton of excess detail (like Mr. Glowy Skull) because why not? I am not very big on writerly intention. The text I’m presented with, I feel free to interpret however I wish, and this, to me, is the point of s4. It undoes itself. It undoes the text of series 1-3. It invites critique in a whole new way. Regardless of what does or does not happen next, I will always choose to question this narrative, to read against the text, because that reading is more interesting and less infuriating. s4, like mofftiss, lies.

But.

The part that makes me think the arg is happening right in front of us, and it’s still live:

This fucking thing.

This “John and Mary really love each other” barf festival video, released on 28 February. (Savage and efficient crit here, by @smoljohnlock)

WHY NOW?

I could see, maybe, that video flying as an s4 preview, but we have it released here, now, after…all that, when we know that the picture being presented in it is nowhere near the reality that we got in the narrative.

I don’t want to say it’s a sign. I don’t know, man. I’m tired. We’re all tired. But that video certainly did invite a renewal of the wtf-was-that outrage of s4, didn’t it?

The fourth wall, in my opinion, has already been broken.

The show has been teaching us how to observe, and not just see, to think critically, and to look for solutions to puzzles, since the beginning. Now it’s turning the function of detective over to us.

Just like the #sherlocklive game was designed to allow us to practice our puzzle solving on a small scale, so is s4. The entire narrative invites us to sit up, take notice, and say, come on, that can’t be how it really happened.

I’m still not going to predict the future here. The show has broken the fourth wall before, and paid off careful observation, via the “1895″ clues. It might be doing that with the “March 8″ billboard thing. It might not. When I say that the narrative is unfinished, I mean exactly that–it lacks an ending (much like my languishing WiPs…sorry about those, btw). What will happen next? Who knows? None of us. Signs (that’s literal, billboard-type signs) point to something more.

BUT IS IT ART?

So: we have been presented with not one, but two false narratives. If mofftiss finish their damn story, and offer some sort of explanation for all the fuckery of s4, then we’ll have been told a bunch of lies in-story, about “what happened” to John and Sherlock, and a bunch of extratextual lies, about s4 being finished after three episodes.

I will always assert, regardless of what happens next, that the in-story lies are there, and believing the textual level of the narrative makes less sense / is less happy making than believing that the story lies. As for the bigger lie, about the length of s4 / the end of this narrative–we’ll see.

It’s a peculiar choice, this, as modern storytelling goes. Rather than just, you know, tell the story they wanted to tell, about a detective and his blogger, they’re really going the long way round. If the “s4 is fake” reading is confirmed, and there is a plan in place, it’s show-offy. It’s audacious. It’s gaslighting the audience to make a point. It’s putting us through an experience–the textual level content of s4–and asking us to believe something contrary to that experience.

It’s not…enjoyable? Like with everything else, I think I’ll be left questioning why this way, and not some other way. It is, potentially, fascinating.

If this is what we think it is, we’ve been playing all along, without even trying.

Youtubers. Are. People. Too.

This shouldn’t need to be said, but I really feel like I have to say something. People seem to forget that YouTubers are human. They seem to forget that they have feelings and that they have lives and that YouTube isn’t necessarily the only thing they ever worry about.
People seem to forget that YouTubers are not objects or toys that are designed to entertain us. People get selfish an don’t want to share them, they don’t want to see them move on to other things.
At the end of the day, they’re just people. They have lives. They have friends and significant others who they put before their careers (and rightfully so) and, most importantly, they have emotions.
They have emotions that can be shattered by harsh things people spew at them. They may not show these emotions in every video they make (or in any of them) but they’re still there. Depression can be so easily masked by a big smile and a loud laugh. It’s so easy to hide for some people.
The best way to get out your feelings is to talk about them. YouTubers are no different. If talking helps them, then they are going to turn to their biggest support group. You. They want your support. They want their voice to be heard by people who care because in that moment, that’s what they need.
When you mock them or make jokes about that, it’s going to hurt. They may never even see those jokes, but what if they did.
Instead of idolizing YouTubers and putting them on these pedestals, think of them as an adult or parent or just someone you know in your everyday life. Would you force those people into relationships (with yourself or others) because you believe that they belong with that person and no one else? Would you ruin their current relationship to do that? Would you purposefully be mean/hurtful to them after they spoke their feelings to you? Would you stop talking to them altogether and hate them because they said/did one thing wrong?
Probably not. You’d likely work things out, and you know what? It’s not that different in these fandoms. Sure, you may not be able to directly affect things like this when it comes to a YouTuber/community relationship, but you can sure as hell try. If you be nice, then maybe you can convince someone else to be nice.

Children need to learn that a fandom is not a “child approved” place. Children need to learn that Tumblr, is not a “Child approved” place. Adults aren’t “pushing you out” of a safe space. It never was.

Just because the show is meant for children, does not mean that they get to roam freely around and do whatever the hell they wish unsupervised.

Bronycon is a convention for the show MLP, but that doesn’t mean that children get to just walk around willy nilly. It’s still up to their parents to provide safety and support. The con staff provide protection to everyone at the con, but that doesn’t mean that they are your child’s babysitter or guardian

The same logic applies to fandoms, Tumblr, and the internet. The website sets rules for what is or isn’t allowed. A fandom is a space for anyone who likes the show. It’s a infinite space where pretty much anything regarding the fandom is allowed. Yes, this includes “pedophilic” ships and things that make you uncomfortable.

If you really want a place that is 100% child safe, go to chickensmoothie, neopets, etc. and any other website that is specifically catered to your child senses. not Tumblr.

Tumblr allows NSFW material. So ya know what you do if you see something NSFW and you don’t wanna see it?

1. Block the person who posted it or unfollow

2. Use Tumblr-Savior / X-Kit

3. TURN ON YOUR MOTHERFUCKING SAFE SEARCH

So to all of those who ship Shaladin… Shidge… Sheith… Shance… Shunk… Shklance…

Keep on shippin’. As long as you tag your NSFW as NSFW, then you aren’t breaking any rules, being gross, or pedophilic because at the end of the day, they’re fictional characters. You aren’t the babysitter of some brat on the internet.

And to all you Anti-Shaladins… Out there harassing people…

Fanon Langst is so…………. like, I understand that everyone experiences low self-esteem and struggles with their worth in different ways, but fanon Langst is really bad lmao. It’s so one note to me? And a lot of the time it feels like just an excuse to beat on Lance.

If you want your blog to be filled with pics of Lance crying, go ahead. But it is disturbing how Big this trend of ‘Lance being hurt, Lance crying, Lance dying’ is in this fandom. It’s…. weird that I can go into the tag, either here or on ao3, and know with 100% certainty that I’ll see something about Lance getting hurt/killed.

Many people have been quick to point out that all this excessive Langst content ties into racism. And I won’t lie, I agree with them. Lance is a confirmed brown, Cuban, character of color. And there is a history of brown lives being less valued than white lives- a history that is in fact still happening now. It’s important to remember and acknowledge that fact, and therefore reexamine Langst content with a more critical eye.

HOWEVER, I also understand that Langst is a popular thing because Lance is relatable to the audience. And because Lance is so relatable, it’s easy to project on him. But I gotta………. look, I’m not a psychologist or a therapist, but to every person reading this post- if you treat Lance as a sort of vehicle for every negative thought or fantasy you’ve ever had for yourself, you need to take a step back and just…. look at what you’re doing. Because I did this sort of thing when I was younger, too. I took my favorite characters, the ones I related to most, and I beat them to all hell and made them wish they were dead. And looking back on it now, I’m alarmed by how many Warning Signs there were.

Making angsty content of your faves is fun, but not to the extent that you use them as punching bag stand ins for your own issues. I’ve realized now that I wailed on my favorite characters because I wanted to hurt myself. It wasn’t a healthy way to cope then, and it’s taken me a long time to recover from that mindset.

So yeah. Maybe it’s time we start shifting away from hurting Lance.

Extremely frank Reaper/Gabriel Reyes discussion and analysis follows:

I mean this in the politest yet bluntest way possible:

Gabriel Reyes/Reaper is hardcoded mlm.

I’m going to level with y’all

Gabriel/Reaper is legitimately one of the strongest mlm-coded characters in current media.

And before people go, “You’re biased, you’re pulling this out your ass,” Gabriel/Reaper is basically a “mlm character designed and written by straight men (mostly).”  I’m actually willing to believe that Blizzard has semi-decent intentions with him at this point, but from the outset, Gabriel/Reaper’s design is so blatantly “we aren’t entirely sure how to design/write a mlm character so we’re gonna kinda throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.”

I am not saying all mlm individuals in real life behave like this or do these things.

Rather, I am saying that these are mlm stereotypes perpetuated in the media that artists, designers, and writers at Blizzard have seemingly applied to Gabriel Reyes/Reaper.

Here’s the “we took every major mlm stereotype and built it into Gabriel Reyes/Reaper’s character” list:

  1. Talking with a slight lisp
  2. Incessantly sassy, sarcastic, and sardonic
  3. Wearing jewelry (Reaper canonically wears a silver bangle on one wrist, seemingly only for aesthetic purposes)
  4. being dedicated to “an aesthetic” - single major color palette, with “pop” accent colors like red and silver
  5. Dropping pop culture and music references nonstop
  6. wearing heels
  7. Wearing skintight clothing
  8. His entire “we’re vaguing this” relationship with Jack Morrison/Soldier: 76
  9. The fact that zero female characters in the game hit on him (as opposed to Soldier: 76 and Reinhardt, where Ana compliments the former and straight up flirts with the latter)
  10. Quoting Edgar Allan Poe
  11. frankly, literally dressing himself as the deadass “opposite” of Strike-Commander Morrison (while Soldier: 76 basically dresses “the opposite” of Commander Reyes).
  12. He makes his own Halloween costumes
  13. the implication that the only people allowed to call him by a nickname (Gabe) are Jack Morrison/Soldier: 76 and (rather reluctantly) Sombra
  14. Death Blossom - although the Ultimate title is a reference to The Last Starfighter, Chu has joked that it’s related to Gabriel/Reaper hurling roses at Jack/Soldier: 76.  When someone on twitter make a photoshop of Reaper attacking Soldier: 76 with a bouquet of roses on Valentine’s Day, Michael Chu joked, “Well, it is called Death Blossom.”
  15. Having a paired spray with another man (Jack Morrison/Soldier: 76) - the Commando “Contra references” sprays
  16. Continuing to call Soldier: 76 “Jack” despite 1) “hating him” (or so we are told), 2) Soldier: 76 trying to obscure his name, 3) Soldier: 76 technically having been “Strike-Commander Morrison” to Gabriel Reyes/Reaper for decades says a lot about Gabriel/Reaper’s attitude towards Jack/Soldier: 76.  Despite having a major fall out and literally fighting each other, Gabriel/Reaper persists in calling “John Morrison” by a personal nickname.
  17. If “This is my curse” is, in fact, a Killswitch reference - holy hell, y’all.  Holy. Hell.  “This is my curse/ The yearning/ This is my curse/ There is love/ Burning to find you/ Will you wait for me?/ Will you desire?/ Your silence haunts me/ But still I hunger for you.”

There is no “cute flirtatious banter” between him and any female/feminine character in the game.  By this, I mean interactions that are comparable to, say, the McCree-Hanzo “this is thirsty work” lines or the Pharah-Mercy “Let’s keep the skies clear” lines or even the Ana-Reinhardt “and you look as lovely as ever” lines.  In fact, arguably, the only lines where Gabriel/Reaper actually has “cute flirtatious banter” are with Jack/Soldier: 76.

Soldier: 76: Well. You sure take to this bad guy thing easily, don’t ya? (said with laughter)
Reaper: And you sure know how to play boy scout. (said in a teasing tone)

Soldier: 76: One of these days someone is gonna to put an end to you.
Reaper: I invite them to try.

The latter is seemingly the reason why Soldier: 76 will sometimes say “Well, someone had to do it.” when killing an enemy Reaper.

(Meanwhile, on Soldier’s end, he either is entirely oblivious to Ana’s compliment on him “looking pretty good,” or he straight up ignores it.)

Once again, I am not saying all mlm individuals in real life behave like this or do these things.

What I am saying is that these are, by and large, stereotypes of mlm individuals portrayed/perpetuated by media that Gabriel Reyes/Reaper exhibits.  And while I think many of them are more entertaining or better-portrayed than many other mlm characters in media, we should keep in mind that these all snowball into something much bigger.  Something that Blizzard has only seemed to fuel with the Uprising content.  Whether or not they ever actually act upon it in a direct or outright manner is debatable, but regardless, here is what is currently present in the game, comics, and animations.  Furthermore, Chu has recently retweeted “familial Strike team content” from a major fandom artist who has posted and continues to post Reaper76 content.  The official Overwatch twitter retweeted content from a different major fandom artist who posts Reaper76 content almost exclusively (though the retweet was of Blackwatch content).  Even if the content itself does not directly show Gabriel Reyes/Reaper engaging in romantic interactions with another man (Jack Morrison/Soldier: 76, in these cases), it DOES mean both Chu and someone on the Overwatch social media team are watching these artist accounts.

But yeah, sure.

It’s all “subtext.”

(that’s sarcasm, btw.  Because some readers will take that literally.)

#RomanceGate - A Survival Guide

Okay, so I know a lot of people in the Reylo fandom are hurting right now. I have closed my ask box because I was only getting the same questions over and over again, and I felt it a better use of everyone’s time for me to just put together one big post covering what I reckon are people’s main questions.

1. What actually happened?

This was published in a web-only article on Vanity Fair:

FIVE THINGS THAT ARE NOT IN THE LAST JEDI

A big, central-to-the-plot romance. For all the fan-fiction fantasies of “Reylo” (an imagined union of Daisy Ridley’s Rey and Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren) or “Stormpilot” (the same, for John Boyega’s ex-stormtrooper Finn and Oscar Isaac’s pilot Poe Dameron), Johnson says that The Last Jedi offers “no one-to-one equivalent of the Han-to-Leia, burning, unrequited love. In our story, that’s not a centerpiece.”

And, on cue, all hell broke loose.

2. Oh my God! Does this mean Reylo is dead?!

It means we’re not going to see a full-on romance between Rey and Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi. It doesn’t, however, mean that we’ve been seeing things or that Rey and Kylo aren’t important to each other’s stories. We have lots of good reasons (in TFA and in external stuff like the Databank) to believe that they are. There’s still a fascinating and compelling dynamic there, and we know that The Last Jedi is going to explore that in more depth. The Vanity Fair quote just means that the dynamic won’t be blooming into a passionate love affair in Rian’s movie.

3. So there’s no romance whatsoever in The Last Jedi?

We don’t know. Rian’s quote simply says that there’s no analogue to Han and Leia’s central love affair, but that doesn’t mean there’s no romance at all. It’s perfectly possible that they will subtlety allude to attraction and tension between Rey and Kylo without that developing into a full-on romance. But again, don’t take that as a promise - it’s a possibility, not an inevitability.

4. So, does that mean we should pin all our hopes on Episode IX?

I don’t think we should pin our hopes on anything. The best way to enjoy these films is going to be to try and go in with as few expectations as possible, and take them on their own terms. There is, of course, a chance of Reylo becoming romantic in Episode IX, but I would advise against counting on that or believing it’s inevitable. We can’t think that far ahead without seeing The Last Jedi first.

5. What happens to the Reylo fandom?

It should 100% continue. Period. I want to see it flourish and thrive. I want to see people write their stories and create their fanart. I want people to discuss the characters at considerable length and be excited about seeing them again in The Last Jedi. And I really don’t think this news should affect how we engage with fandom at all. I do think it should make us moderate our expectations for what we’ll see in the films, but we absolutely should not let it kill our enjoyment of the characters and their dynamic.

6. How do you feel about this?

Personally, I’m mostly annoyed because of the response that this news will inspire - it will unleash an onslaught of antis in the Reylo tag, gloating on fanboy enclaves, and outpourings of despair from shippers. All of these reactions are inevitable, and in the case of shippers’ feelings I totally understand the sadness and disappointment. I empathise, because I feel those things too. I’m the first person to admit that I let my imagination run away with me and set my hopes/expectations too high when it comes to Reylo, so the Vanity Fair quote came as something of a reality check for me. I’m a little sad, but I have absolutely no intention of quitting Star Wars or quitting Reylo fandom. I love Star Wars, and the Reylo fandom has been a cornerstone of my experience of it. I love what we create as a community, and my main concern right now is that we remain resilient and continue doing what we do best. Block antis and haters without prejudice. Try to be realistic, but still be enthusiastic and excited about seeing your faves on screen again come December. Most of all, remember that fandom should be fun - focus on the things that you enjoy about Star Wars and Reylo, keep on creating, and remain strong as a community. I’m not going anywhere, and I’m still just as excited for The Last Jedi as I ever was. Bring it on.

Ugh, so apparently my most popular trending post at the moment is the one about racist homophobic “Karen” kicking her gay daughter out of the house. And the reason it’s trending is cause people are calling it fake, and citing the fact that I claimed “Karen” had been writing slash fic for over 30 years.

Newsflash children: You did not invent fandom, you are not even close to the ground level of fandom inception as you know it today.

Yes, there was slash fic being written over 30 years ago, even longer so than that. They were called fanzines, and they were these things printed on paper, you had to sign up for them and theyd get sent in the mail to your houseAnd they were predominantly started by women over the age of 30 who wanted to talk to other people like them without the fear of ridicule for liking something for “silly” reasons like love and sex and all the other things we like about fandom.

People wrote about Star Trek, Star Wars (my god the Han/Luke slash wars involved people throwing gay fanfic onto Mark Hamill’s lawn)—pretty much any popular show at the time in the same way we do today, except now we have the convenience of a place called Ao3 and not being sued for writing fan content because yes, that was a thing that also happened.

As for the people just tagging on “this seems fake but okay” for the hell of it and talking about how no one would take in a queer kid the way Aunt Bee did? I’m sorry you are that jaded.

I didn’t know when I was bitching about something personal going down in my fandom circles, that it’d get tumblr popular. I never know what the fuck I am going to post on this hellsite that will take off next, but it was real, and it happened. M is still living with Aunt Bee who has always been a dominant figure in the OT Star Wars fandom, looooong before Ao3 and even fanfic net was a thing. And she is known in certain circles for her overwhelming kindness and generosity. She was an internet fandom mom in the days of dial up and before, and it’s not my fault if you’re not aware of your own fandom history enough to not know who the fuck I’m really talking about.

And no I will not post “proof” or give you real names so you can go find them, the fuck is wrong with you. These are real people with real lives and I am not about to go rooting around on people’s private facebook feeds just to score fake points on the internet. I literally do not give that much of a fuck about my blog to even try that. I shouldn’t have even been bitching about it publicly in the first place but I needed an outlet to vent that one of my oldest fandom circles was dying and was going nova in a spectacular fashion and tumblr picked it up and ran.

And in the midst of all that, there was one small moment of genuine goodness in the world where another human being said all right no fuck your bigotry and hatred, your kid can come stay with me and did it. And while that might seem unbelievable to you and your own selfish values, people do these kind of things.

I can name five people off the top of my head here on tumblr who have helped rescue someone else from shitty abusive situations, and taken them into their homes and cared for them like their own family.

The entire sum of the universe is not shit and desolation.

And I’m sorry that you think it is.

How about you #SaveYourself because Bendy doesn’t need any saving.

My Pitch Perfect PSA....

I’ve always been a firm believer in the motto, live and let live. I respect people’s opinions, their beliefs, their hopes and dreams etc etc, even when I do not agree with them because at the end of the day, it’s not up to me to change people’s minds or alter their way of thinking.

Which is why as someone who has and is a shipper, I firmly believe in a persons right to ship whoever the hell they want.

Shipping is fun, it takes you out of the often times depressing reality we live in these days.

But here’s the thing about shipping, it’s not real life, it’s fan generated, made up, fake. Majority of the time shipping is centred around two fictional characters. And that’s fine, because your mixing fantasy with fantasy.

But lately lines have been getting crossed.

It is one thing to ship fictional characters and have your own little area on Tumblr, or interactions with other fans or simply keeping it to yourself.

But it is NEVER, under any circumstances, okay to bombard the actors behind these characters with millions of comments on their social medias in relation to whatever ship it is you ship, or to hassle other cast members about it

Especially if those comments are inappropriate or even borderline threatening.

If the actors acknowledge the ship, they do so in support of the fans, not because they genuinely believe the same thing you do. Just because they talk about it does not mean you are entitled to push and push until you get whatever it is you want.

Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow and the rest of the cast have been more than accommodating to fans in regards to Bechloe. They’ve answered questions, made reference to it, even joked around about it.

But there is a disturbing level of entitlement coming out of some fans within the shipping fandom that is completely disrespectful and uncalled for.

It is not okay to continuously comment under the girls (all members of the cast) posts about Bechloe, it is not okay to hijack interviews and live streams with these comments and questions and it is especially not okay to make comments relating to real life relationships that insinuate there is something more to a friendship than there is because of your own brain generated fantasies.

Ester was on a high having achieved a pretty big milestone in her career and rather than celebrating that moment with her, some fans chose to take away from it by questioning her about things that have nothing to do with her or what she was celebrating.

She didn’t deserve that, none of the cast do. They didn’t ask for Bechloe or any other fandom to become a thing. They have no obligation to us to be as supportive as they have been, but they do, and rather than being grateful, some people are choosing to ruin it by acting like what they are doing is acceptable behaviour.

Well I’m sorry to break it to you but it isn’t. Is it any wonder a lot of Celebs are becoming more closed off with the level of intrusiveness that invades their daily lives from the fans who claim to and are supposed to respect them?

It’s more than obvious to me that Brittany is becoming more and more uncomfortable with just how big and loud this ship is getting. It was fun in the beginning but now it’s becoming too much.

People need to reign it in big time and have a little more respect for the girls than you have been showing.

I get that you’re excited and you have a massive appreciation for this ship, but bare in mind that Bechloe is a fantasy, and by continuously shoving it down people’s throats, you’re forcing that fantasy into somebody else’s reality.

And that is NOT nor will it ever be okay. And comments relating to Sendrick on social media are especially inappropriate.

These are two people with real lives, real feelings and real relationships. Stop making comments relating to them hooking up with a co-star and making it out to be more than it is.

This type of shipping isn’t funny, it’s incredibly rude and disrespectful to the relationships these girls have in their REAL lives. Keep that shit to yourself, or Tumblr if you really can’t contain yourself, but stop tagging the girls in these posts on social media.

I love Bechloe and the cast and the franchise, but some people are making it not fun anymore by giving the rest of us a bad name.

End of PSA

trimax-na-boken  asked:

But WBC is real with actual documented incidents. What has a real SJW ever actually done besides make stupid people feel uncomfortable on the Internet

There is no such thing as “a real SJW”.  “Social justice warrior” was always a negative label from the beginning, created to designate those that are not representing social justice as it should be (kind of like how the term “weekend warrior” is used to describe someone who’s normally boring from Monday through Friday, but goes out of their way to indulge themselves irresponsibly on the weekends in an attempt to compensate).  Wearing that label unironically is like publicly proclaiming that you’re a bigot.  You’re utilizing the No True Scotsman logical fallacy here.  Also, the fact that you said “make stupid people uncomfortable on the internet” really doesn’t reflect well on you, especially when the majority of anti-SJWs are liberals, LGBTA people, minorities, etc. that are simply “uncomfortable” with how you’re poorly representing what we believe in.  The fact that there even is a divide between people that all desire equality just goes to show that someone is doing it wrong (hint: It’s not the anti-SJWs).  If anything, you’re just showing people exactly the kind of attitude that people hate about SJWs.  It’s the fanaticism.  It’s the extremism.  There are people who simply have faith in a higher power, and then there are people like WBC, who actively use that faith to try to harm others.  This is why they’re really the perfect analogy when discussing what SJWs are to activism.

In any case, are you sure you want me to answer this?  Because I don’t think you’re going to like what you see.

What has tumblr done, you ask?:

Meanwhile, the sane people of tumblr mocked the shit out of them for intentionally kicking the hornet’s nest, and then whining when they got stung.

Why?  Because 4chan contributed over $23k to it.

I’m sure all of this doesn’t even come CLOSE to what SJWs have done overall.  I could probably spend weeks finding all sorts of bullshit to put on here.  I openly invite others to add onto this, as I’m sure there’s a lot that’s been left out (@takashi0 might have a list on hand).

This is why people are against “social justice warriors”.  They are NOT representing social justice.  They are NOT supporting equality.  They are only giving liberals, activists, women, minorities, and the LGBTA community a bad name.

“What the hell were you thinking, Y/N?!”

         “The werewolf was getting away.”

“I don’t care if he was getting away, don’t run out onto unstable ice in any circumstances!”

You fought to keep your teeth from chattering as Dean lead you into your motel room, angrily shutting the door behind him and ripping a blanket off the bed. Your soaking wet jacket and shirt were soon to follow that quick removal, hitting the stained carpet with a light thud before Dean wrapped the heavy comforter around your shaking form.

“He was gonna kill someone,” you said, voice quiet but not timid.

“He almost killed you!” Dean shot back.

“No he didn’t, the ice did that.”

You held your ground and locked eyes with Dean, willing your shuttering breaths to calm as waves of icy cold wracked your body. You wouldn’t yield, not about this. You did it to saves innocents and you’d do it again.

Dean seemed to read the conviction in your eyes and sighed, running his fingers through snow-dampened hair. “Just … just promise me you won’t do anything like that again, okay?”

“Sure. In the incredibly unlikely event that I once again find myself needing to run out onto half-melted ice, I promise I’ll let the werewolf mangle people instead.”

“Y/N/.” Dean closed his eyes and stilled, his whole demeanor shifting from rage to fear as he knelt down on the floor in front of your chair. “Please.”

You didn’t know what to say, didn’t know how to respond. Dean never acted this way. The anger, sure, Dean wasn’t exactly known for being level headed. But this … vulnerability?

You reached for his hand and gave him a shaky smile.

“I’m sorry, Dean. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

It took him a moment to respond, to show any sign he even heard you. But eventually he looked up, those green eyes shining with relief and fear – fear for your life, you realized. “It’s okay,” he whispered. “Just comere.”

You leaned over and let Dean pull you against his chest, his hand running up and down your arm and chin resting on top of your head. You savored his warmth, let it seep into your chilled skin and surround you. A shiver ran down your spine despite the heavy blanket. Dean simply pulled you closer and kissed the top of your head.

         “I promise,” you whispered.
