One of the more amusing claims I have heard from the salt resulting from the anime awards was that “Yuri on Ice became so popular only because of gay-baiting/fujoshi-baiting.”
I really have to laugh at this because every season we get a number of anime that could be described with the words “gay-baiting” or “fujoshi pandering”, yet somehow none of them get anywhere near the popularity YOI has? Some of them are based on manga and even despite that, their fandoms (and the resulting popularity) are smaller than YOI’s.
Wanna know the secret?
It’s because Yuri on Ice was not baiting.
Which is exactly what makes the difference.
But the thing is that it wasn’t just “not baiting” because there do exist anime that explicitly show gay relationships - yaoi anime. Yet somehow yaoi anime also get not even a fraction of the attention and popularity YOI has.
Wanna know why?
Because Yuri on Ice presented a natural, healthy, and what we should highlight, fully consensual, romantic relationship between two men, which was not sexualized or fetishized in any way. We had no ‘seme’ (dominant or ‘male partner’) and no ‘uke’ (submissive or ‘female partner’), we had two humans who were in love and in a deeply emotional relationship. And while this is minor, we also had no ‘sparkly pink backgrounds’ and whatnot, which make everything feel so unreal and displaced, and instead everything happened in the real world and was witnessed by other characters and just felt natural and grounded in reality.
The proper gay representation was enough to make the anime popular (because it is just so rare and well-done), but it is certainly not the only reason why it is so loved by so many and why it reached such levels of popularity.
One of the reasons is that it wasn’t just a romance. It was an anime with a plot and figure skating as its main focus, which showed a love story on the side, as the story unraveled and characters drew. The love story was important, but the anime was always more than that.
Many people also really enjoyed other aspects of the anime, be it the characters themselves, their development, the handling of mental illness, the ethnic diversity (and lack of stereotypes!), the presentation of figure skating, the music or just all of the above.
Yes, the LGBT+ aspect was important but an anime without any other enjoyable qualities wouldn’t have gone as far as YOI did, wouldn’t be as loved as YOI was (and as it still is).
Yuri on Ice perhaps isn’t an anime for everyone, but it certainly deserves credit for all it managed to do, because if it were really just ‘bait’ then it would have never achieved the success and popularity it has now.
Question: how does Yoongi get That Glow™ on his cheeks 24/7. What highlighter does he use? Is it sweat? Is it light reflecting off of his skin from standing too close to Hobi? I need to know for science.
Concept: Philip Shea loves wearing Highlighter and occasionally loves doing make up- especially costume make up. But if he’s going out somewhere fun like a club or something he’ll just pop on some gold on his cheek bones and on his nose. maybe put a little glitter in his hair
@gabibakos, @whiteriotariotofmyown and @fleshbutt-apocalypse tagged me to post my six favorite selfies from 2016, thanks babes! The first three are from when I saw Iron Maiden with my brother, @allofthebrucedickinson and her boyfriend, the fourth was when I saw an ad for the Maiden gig in Prague, the fifth was when I got my hair dyed for the first time, and the last was when my eyebrows were hella great
