what has the world came to?

The charity streams do so much for people on such a large scale…but they help in the small ways too

It’s absolutely amazing that this community has had and does have the ability to help others through charity. We’ve helped so many causes.

I think, in a small way, by doing these things, we’re helping ourselves a little bit too.

Participating in these events-whether it’s through donating(small or big), spreading the word through social medias or making fanart during the event to bring more attention-it gives a sense of purpose, that feeling of “I helped do something good in this world”.

Reminding ourselves of what we have done for others and the amount of good that came out of doing these things can help us remember that:

Yes, we do matter.

We can (and have) made a difference in others’ lives

We have a reason to be here.

Charity is a way to not only spread hope to other people and other organizations but also to ourselves.

So now that we’re leaving 2017 and entering 2018, I feel like it’s important to remind all us Americans (especially my fellow tumblrites who were too young to remember 9/11 when it happened) that what Trump has done and is doing since he came into office, the America he’s pushing to create, is not normal. We had tons of posts like this during his first 100 days or so but I’ve seen nothing since.

It’s so easy to get compassion fatigue and get worn down and start seeing this has the new norm. But it’s not.

Remember that.

“We’re going to keep our PMA- We’re going to keep our positive mental attitude going forward this year. Sure some stuff might get us down and it’s okay to feel down. You don’t have to be a hundred percent happy all the time, nobody is. Nobody’s perfect. You’re allowed to feel sad, but just remember that-let’s keep focusing on the good after that. That after we get sad, that there is still some light left in the world that we can work towards. “

This is what Jack said at the end of last year. This is how PMA first came to be a part of the community and look at all the amazing things have come since PMA became a part of all of our lives in this year alone. It truly has come so far and I’ll always be so proud of him for that :)

Okay so I could definitely do with some more queer rep from Sanderson but I will say that I love the richness and complexity of his characters and the fuck that they almost all say ‘fuck you’ to writing gender roles.

‘Strong women’ doesn’t mean ‘woman punches loads of things and is badass’ it means a rich variety, of complex women who are each strong in their own way.

Vin, the street-urchin and constant survivor, whose strength comes as she grows and actually learns, in so many ways, to outgrow that ‘strong woman’ archetype. She learns to be soft. She learns to embrace her feminine side. She learns vulnerability, and love, and trust, and she grows into a better, stronger person for it.

Marasi who finds her strength in knowledge, and in loving herself for the things she can do, instead of loving the idolised version of herself who has all the things she wishes she could do. Who learns to stop revering and living in a man’s shadow, and steps out to cast her own.

Steris who is a canonly autistic woman who is never forced to be ‘normal’, in any sense of the word. The characters around her learn to read her, to understand her, and they fall in love with the woman that she is because of her quirks, because of her differences, because of her autism, and not in spite of it.

Shallan who was a sheltered, naive young abuse victim, with very obvious PTSD and anxiety who has undergone an incredible, uneven recovery journey. She has found herself, her voice, her independence, and her agency. But she is also learning how to accept what has happened to her instead of hiding from it, to heal and grow while retaining her wit, her drawing, and her smile.

Jasnah who, frankly, couldn’t care less about people’s expectations when it comes to her. Her mind is her own, and her strength comes from knowing herself, and refusing to compromise that self even when it goes against her entire culture and society. A woman who presents a composed, cold, blunt face to the world and is allowed to, and is never undermined or ‘thawed’. She is who she is, and that’s final.

Navani as a mother, a wife, a lover, in many ways the embodiment of traditional roles for a female character over a certain age. But she’s also a scholar, an engineer, an inventor, a visionary. A woman who knows what she wants, and inevitably finds a way of getting it. A woman who has deep loves and passions, and pursues them, but never loses sight of the merit of logic and order.

Vivenna, who grew up with the knowledge that she was to be a sacrifice for her people, that her pain and happiness were as nothing compared to her duty. A woman who grew up with deeply rooted prejudices, and a naive, ignorant view of the world. She grew up, she learned her own mind, and followed it to the ends of her earth and into another, where she came to lead men in battle in a notoriously misogynistic/gender-role based society.

Siri the dreamer, the free spirit, who learned that she didn’t have to be like her sister, and didn’t have to ascribe to the things expected of her to have value, and worth, and power. Who becomes a queen in her own right, and matures into a powerful woman who refuses to accept life on any but her own terms.

It’s a common enough critique that female characters get stuffed into one mould that’s described as ‘strong’ and that’s it. Which is almost as limiting and stifling as the traditional expectations of female characters. But tbh I love what he does with his male characters and the complexity and rejection of typical masculinity there, too.

Elend who grew up under the thumb of an abusive father and an oppressive system, but still had the softness, and the hope to dream of building something better. Who was more than comfortable having his wife protect him, and having everyone know that, who took pride in Vin, without ever once having it be hinted as some sort of slight to his masculinity. Who was able to accept the correction and guidance of another woman everyone else scorned and ignored who helped shape him into a better king, and a better man.

Sazed who was portrayed both as the gentle, reserved scholar, but also a rebel and an instigator, who went against his people to build a better world. Someone who was presented as rational, and calm, and arguably nonbinary, and mostly shuns pretty every typically ‘masculine’ trope in the book.

Kelsier who had the fairly typical ‘dead wife, revenge plot’ story, but that was explored in a thoroughly atypical way tbh. A man full of darkness who insisted upon fighting with a smile, and encouraged others to do the same. Cocky, and arrogant, and selfish was balanced by a little flash of sentiment, the hope for a new world, and the picture of a flower he carried with him to remind him what they fought for.

Adolin who’s regarded as one of the best swordsmen in the world, but who talks to his weapon before battle and thanks it for serving him. He wears his mother’s necklace as a good luck charm in battle, and goes against cultural expectations by being physically affectionate with the people he loves. Also has a keen interest in fashion he refuses to be ashamed of, and while his actions characterise him as a womaniser, his thoughts/behaviours display his dissatisfaction with that, and his desire for stability. Also very emotionally aware of those around him, and takes care to look after them when he reads them being in trouble.

Dalinar’s honestly fascinating journey from a bloodthirsty, violent soldier, to a depressed, traumatised alcoholic, to a struggling general, a hero of mankind, and then again struggling with PTSD is honestly so well-written. This man is literally a military legend, renowned for his prowess in war and we see him, in the course of the series: give away a legendary blade that is literally more valuable than kingdoms for the lives of a group of slaves, and consider it a genuinely good deal as he’s learned that all lives are precious. Struggle with very obvious flashbacks and panic attacks as a result of war trauma. Meekly align himself with distinctly feminine things to quietly support his son and stop him feeling awkward.

Renarin, who is a canon autistic character, who cannot be a soldier in a distinctly war-driven society, and is allowed to explore that, to feel bitterness and frustration with his condition. But who is also slowly starting to learn, with the support of his family, that there are different kinds of strength, and that they love him and are proud of him even if he can’t march into battle at the head of their armies. Who is allowed to stim openly, who is largely accepted for his differences, and is defended fiercely on the occasion that he’s not. Who is a goddamn super hero in this world, and is a massively progressive piece of honest autistic representation, in which he is not a character with autism, but an autistic character.

Kaladin who is honestly one of the most visceral, honest portrayals of depression I’ve seen in a fictional character. Who still, three books on, suffers from depressive episodes, who acknowledges that this kind of thing sometimes doesn’t just go away, or get better, that it’s always there, somewhere, and he fights it, and keeps fighting it, with the help and acceptance of those around him. Who is also a goddamn super hero who is warned by his surgeon-father that he’ll have to grow calluses, that he can’t care so deeply about his patients. Who becomes a soldier to support his younger brother, and tries to strike the balance between killing and protection, and to deal with his soft heart that has never truly hardened.

Male characters that have genuine, honestly explored mental illnesses, insecurities, and who are frequently depicted crying, and otherwise being allowed to freely show and explore their emotions and honestly, i could say a hell of a lot more but this is quite long enough so that’s enough of that.

QuakeCon Fallout 76 panel

Panel begins at around 37:50, but if you want to skip the panel intro (in which nothing happens) and a replay of the E3 trailer, go to 42:18. Panel includes Fallout 76 development director Chris Meyer, project leader Jeff Gardiner, and game director Todd Howard.

Important/noteworthy info (I’m sure this is riddled with spelling mistakes, bad grammar, maybe even conflicting info; if you notice anything, let me know):

  • In regards to questing and general feel, FO76 remains “very similar to the Fallout you know and love.” Howard describes it as being 80% the familiar feel of Fallout, with the other 20% being “really different.”
  • FO76 has more “adventure elements,” focuses more on what it means to live in the world. It “has to feel real” to the player. The game “has a slow burn,” and they want you to really feel like you are your character in this game.
  • FO76 uses the Quake III networking architecture.
  • According to Gardiner, Bethesda Montreal is working on the game’s graphics, while Bethesda Austin is comprised of gameplay and network code experts.
  • Bethesda debuts the Fallout 76 Perks trailer (in the style of similar animated Vault-Tec trailers which came out before FO4), including things like mutations.
  • Character creation in Fallout 76 is shown at 54:40. The CC has been improved over FO4, though no details on how or why are given. Immediately after creating your character, you are taken to a screen where you can take your Vault-Tec ID badge photo, using the game’s photo mode, which allows you to select character poses and facial expressions.
  • Photo mode can be used at any time throughout gameplay, and photos you’ve taken appear in load screens. These are randomized along with “curated photos.”
  • Loading screens do not appear often, but there is a “little one” whenever you fast travel.
  • You can change your character’s appearance at any point throughout gameplay, from your hairstyle to even your gender.
  • At 56:25, gameplay is shown of emerging from the Vault, including your first level-up.
  • Leveling up begins with choosing whichever one of your SPECIAL attributes you wish to increase, which is followed by choosing an available “perk card” under that category. This seems much less cluttered than FO4′s perk chart screen. Taking a perk again increases its rank up to a seeming maximum of three. Each perk card has a “point cost” which requires a certain SPECIAL level in order to equip it.
  • “The levels keep going up and up and up. We don’t want to make a game where you have to stop leveling, but we had to make some very interesting decisions on what that means for a multiplayer game for balance.
  • We see level-ups to level 2, level 4, and then level 42. At 58:37, at the level 42 level-up screen, the player is wielding a crossbow.
  • PERKS SEEN: (any words in brackets were cut off; all assumptions are my own, though any indicated with ? I am unsure of–KEEP IN MIND that the numbers are affected by PERK RANKS and are thus subject to change; the numbers here are taken from perks of various tiers; this includes things like “there’s no chance you’ll be addicted to alcohol,” which is a level 3 perk, in which we can assume the first two levels just have a lowered chance)

      • GOAT LEGS: Take 80% less damage from falling.
    • LUCK
      • SCROUNGER: 50% change to find extra ammow hen you “Search” an ammo container.
      • STARCHED GENES: You will never mutate from rads and RadAway will never cure mutations.
      • MYSTERY MEAT: Stimpaks generate excessive, edible meat. Higher Rads improve the chance.
      • MYSTERIOUS STRANGER: The Mysterious Stranger appears more often when using VATS. [This perk is at level 2 of 3; assume that the Stranger only begins appearing if you have level 1]
      • LUCK OF THE DRAW: Your weapon has a 10% chance to regain condition when hitting an enemy.
      • CAN DO!: [30%?] chance to find an extra canned good when you “search” a [?] container.
  • You can pick any perk that you meet the requirements for when you level up. More become available as you level.
  • Your stat level determines how many perks you can have active at a time: A character with 12 Strength is shown to have one level 3 perk, three level 2 perks, and three level 1 perks, adding up to 12. Cards can be worth up to 5 points, with each capping at different tiers.
  • Each SPECIAL stat has a cap of 15.
  • Charisma in FO76 is designed to share your perk cards with other players in your team.
  • Perk cards can be unlocked in card packs, which you initially get every two levels, until level 10, after which you get one every five, in addition to the single perk card you unlock every level. They come with four cards and a stick of gum, which can be used as a food item. The gum wrapper has a joke in it, all of which are written by Emil Pagliarulo (writer of such things as Oblivion’s Dark Brotherhood questline, Skyrim’s guard dialogue, and Fallout 4′s main storyline).
  • You can swap out your perks at any time.
  • There are “hundreds” of perk cards.
  • SPECIAL points cannot be increased after level 50, but you can still pick a perk card every level after that.
  • Beta goes live in October.
  • They fully expect FO76 to be broken at first; the beta will be used as a stress test.
  • FO76 will be updated regularly after launch; Todd states it will be a “different game” one, two, five years after it comes out.
  • On PvP, griefing: When you shoot another player, you do a little bit of damage, not full damage, described as an “invitation” to combat, like “slapping somebody at a bar.” If the other player engages, then both enter combat and do full damage. There is a cap reward to combat based on the players’ levels; you will get more caps for killing a high-level character than a low-level character. When you are killed, you can “seek revenge,” which doubles the reward for killing them.
    • An attacking player can still kill someone who does not wish to engage, but if they do (i.e., against their will), they become a “wanted murderer,” and get no reward for it (no caps, no XP) and appear on everyone’s map as a red star with a bounty on their head–a bounty which comes out of their own caps. They are also unable to see any other players on their map.
  • Sneaking removes you from the map (unless you are wanted).
  • When you die, you drop your junk items–think crafting materials, a large portion of the gameplay loop. You can store your junk in a stash. The point of this is to represent sunk time, to make sure you are preparing before heading into a dangerous area.
    • You can respawn at any fast travel point; the point closest to you is free, the Vault 76 entrance is free, but everything beyond that has a cap cost dependent on distance from you.
  • PvP does not “kick off” until level 5.
  • You are able to “ignore and block” players; ignoring blocks them for the session. (Assuming blocking means you won’t be matchmade with them again?)
  • There is a “pacifist flag” (mode) which sets the game so you cannot accidentally engage in combat, so that no one can trick you into fighting by jumping in front of your bullets (further preventing griefing)
  • PvP is balanced so that stronger players will indeed be harder to kill, but if you play cleverly and well you can still manage to come out on top; the cap reward will be incredibly high if you pull off a kill on someone much higher in level
  • Blueprint system: Save blueprints to a creation so that you can easily rebuild it if it gets destroyed, and so that it can be moved within your camp to fit it nicely with the terrain whenever you move somewhere new.
  • Camps can be destroyed so that you cannot grief players by trapping them inside a prison.
  • Example of a trap set by Bethesda employee: Player sat in the middle of the road playing a tuba, but built turrets in the foliage to the side of the road. When players attempt to attack him, the turrets turn on them and fire from the foliage, killing them first.
  • Camp can be moved so that players can move their camps around when they find a nicer spot, but players tend to settle in to a specific place to keep their camp.
  • There is voice chat for your team, and for the game world; area-based, so you can hear players near you.
  • VATS is now real-time. You cannot initially target individual body parts, and the ability to do that is a perk you can unlock. Percentage to hit is based on your Perception. VATS can be used to find players (as you can in other modern Fallout games).
  • VATS becomes more and more useful the more you invest in Perception.
  • Inon Zur is scoring Fallout 76.
  • Licensed music: FO76 has more tracks than have ever been in a Fallout game. There are radio stations you can listen to. There is a balance of “classic” tracks used in older Fallout games, as well as songs new to the series; they seem to be drawing most heavily from 40s music this time around. Howard says there is an “unbelievable amount” of weird, wacky 40s music.
  • Private servers are definitely happening, specifically because they want people to be able to mod the game. It’s going to be “very, very complicated,” but Bethesda is “committed to it.” They are in the process of solving that problem.
Let America Be America Again - Poem by Langston Hughes

Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed–
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.

(There’s never been equality for me,
Nor freedom in this “homeland of the free.”)

Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?
And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,
I am the Negro bearing slavery’s scars.
I am the red man driven from the land,
I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek–
And finding only the same old stupid plan
Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.

I am the young man, full of strength and hope,
Tangled in that ancient endless chain
Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land!
Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need!
Of work the men! Of take the pay!
Of owning everything for one’s own greed!

I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil.
I am the worker sold to the machine.
I am the Negro, servant to you all.
I am the people, humble, hungry, mean–
Hungry yet today despite the dream.
Beaten yet today–O, Pioneers!
I am the man who never got ahead,
The poorest worker bartered through the years.

Yet I’m the one who dreamt our basic dream
In the Old World while still a serf of kings,
Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true,
That even yet its mighty daring sings
In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned
That’s made America the land it has become.
O, I’m the man who sailed those early seas
In search of what I meant to be my home–
For I’m the one who left dark Ireland’s shore,
And Poland’s plain, and England’s grassy lea,
And torn from Black Africa’s strand I came
To build a “homeland of the free.”

The free?

Who said the free? Not me?
Surely not me? The millions on relief today?
The millions shot down when we strike?
The millions who have nothing for our pay?
For all the dreams we’ve dreamed
And all the songs we’ve sung
And all the hopes we’ve held
And all the flags we’ve hung,
The millions who have nothing for our pay–
Except the dream that’s almost dead today.

O, let America be America again–
The land that never has been yet–
And yet must be–the land where every man is free.
The land that’s mine–the poor man’s, Indian’s, Negro’s, ME–
Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose–
The steel of freedom does not stain.
From those who live like leeches on the people’s lives,
We must take back our land again,

O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath–
America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain–
All, all the stretch of these great green states–
And make America again!

Time undoes even the mightiest of creatures. Just look at what it’s done to you. One day you will perish. You will lie with the rest of your kind in the dirt. Your dreams forgotten, your horrors effaced. Your bones will turn to sand. And upon that sand, a new god will walk. One that will never die. Because this world doesn’t belong to you or the people who came before. It belongs to someone who has yet to come. - Dolores Abernathy, Westworld S01

i. i think of all the people i thought i loved and i laugh. it’s a long list, and for a long time i thought there was something wrong with me for being the only one of my friends who had never fallen in love, never fallen so fucking hard that my bedroom floor had a hole shaped like my body.

ii. you laughed and i swear to god, seriously, i almost cried. it was beautiful. that’s not to say that it still isn’t, i’m sure it is, it’s just, i haven’t heard your voice in months and so, i can’t use present tense. i’m only fooling myself. i erase my call log frequently but, i can’t bring myself to erase the proof that you were once here.

iii. our love was held together by pepsi and walks by the lighthouse and caramel frappuccinos and rainy days and extra large packages of extra gum that had 35 sticks instead of 18. i think i dropped my heart in the water when you told me you were leaving. i think i left it there for safe keeping but, i can’t bring myself to get it back.

iv. we haven’t spoken in a little over a month but it feels like it’s been longer. i think you stopped caring when you knew you didn’t have to pretend anymore. i think your liberation from my mess of emotions was the only thing you got out of what we had.

v. it’s weird to think that there were people before you. i had my first kiss in the 8th grade and i thought i loved him. a little over a year later i thought i was in love again and a year later and a year later and then, i kissed you. i loved you. i think for a long time i tried to convince myself that i didn’t want to kiss you, and when i did, i knew i had been wrong from the start.

vi. i haven’t deleted our pictures. i know i said i would, i know i told my friends i have, i know i’ve told my mom i don’t miss you anymore and i know i go outside now and i smile at the sun, but i think that missing someone is harder than it looks. self help books tell you to use distractions and make plans and talk to your friends, but i’ve done exactly that for the past 8 months and my neck still has a bruise in the shape of your lips.

vii. it was raining the first time you kissed me. the storm almost blew us away but we held onto each other and you drank my coffee and i leaned on your shoulder and we watched the world fall down around us. i think when you’re 16 you feel so invincible that you try and walk right into the eye of a storm. that’s what i did that day. i came back, broken, mangled, torn apart, but i came back.

viii. the day you left, i cried. i know this isn’t a surprise, i think anyone who lost the person they built their world around would cry. it’s been 8 months, and i still don’t know what happened. if love is real, then so is closure, it has to be. i never got it. i don’t know how you managed to break a shattered thing, but you did.

ix. i still love you, please call me.

Marvel characters as Michael Scott

Thor: Loki, you ignorant slut!

Loki: Should have burned this place down when I had the chance.

T’Challa: I’m not superstitious. But I am a little stitious.

M’Baku: Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy. Both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.

Tony: Welcome back, jerky jerk-face.

Steve: I guess the attitude I’ve tried to create here is that I’m a friend first and a boss second and probably an entertainer third.

Bucky: I don’t even consider myself a part of society.

Sam: I am Beyoncé always.

Nat: I will literally kill you and your entire family.

Clint: I am not to be truffled with.

Bruce: I would not miss it for the world. But if something else came up I would definitely not go.

Peter: I love inside jokes. I’d love to be a part of one someday.

Nick: Think about this: what is the most exciting thing that can happen? On TV, or in movies, or in real life? Somebody has a gun. That’s why I always start with a gun. Because you can’t top it. You just can’t.

It is with a heavy heart that I post this picture. Marines and fans everywhere are in shock tonight as we received word that we lost a true warrior, R. Lee Ermey. Known to everyone as “The Gunny” he captured the hearts and imaginations of young devil dogs, such as myself when he played Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in the movie Full Metal Jacket. This morning, the Gunny has left this world and is now with his fellow Marine brothers and sisters guarding heaven’s streets.

It was a true honor to meet the man during my deployment to Iraq. The Gunny came to visit us in Nasiriyah during our deployment. Got my picture taken with him and got his autograph on an Iraqi dinar (their dollar bill). He came into our battalion area and stood on top of the roof of a HUMWV and was talking to us for about 45 minutes, telling us what was happening back in the states. He also got us pumped up by redoing all his famous lines from Full Metal Jacket! Once he finished he asked us if we could give hime about 30 minutes to eat some chow, but after that he was ours for the night, anything we wanted, pics, autographs, he said he was there for us! Over 150 Marines lined up and he took the time for each and every one of us to pose for pics and sign whatever we wanted. It is a memory that will stay will me forever and will always cherish. Semper Fi, Gunny. Till Valhalla warrior.

anonymous asked:

do you have any tips on writing post-apocolypse settings?

Ooh, post-apoc is fun! I don’t know what kind of apocalypse you’re writing, so I won’t have as many specific tips for you, but here’s what I came up with.

Tips on Writing a Post-Apocalypse Setting

The world cannot be completely over. In other words, you have to have worked out a way for your characters to survive whatever apocalypse you’ve concocted.

Don’t just consider the humans. An apocalypse will affect plant life, animal life, and all the technology and buildings humans have created. You’ll have to figure out if animals are affected by the plague, too, or if the temperature has been raised enough to melt cars and evaporate all the water.

On a related note, how has the landscape changed? Are buildings degraded? Are there no more oceans or lakes? How does this present new obstacles for your characters?

What traits do your protagonists have that allow them to survive? More importantly, what traits would allow people to survive your apocalypse? Are they a good fighter because your apocalypse is a zombie one? Are they a good hunter/forager because your apocalypse caused all the farmland to be barren? Are they all dark skinned because the racist aliens kidnapped all the light skinned people? You get the idea.

Knowing the details and effects of your apocalypse is important, and knowing how your individual OCs are surviving is important, but knowing how society as a whole is recovering from the apocalypse is also important. What large scale forces are at work while your protagonist is struggling?

Lastly, don’t get caught up in the apocalypse. It’s obviously a large part of the setting, but stories are made from both setting and plot. Something has to be happening that will show off your concept!

I hope these helped you, and you know if you ever need anything else, my inbox is always open!

As Time Passes

It wasn’t until Harry was six that he felt his hand start to burn and he knew that the Dursleys had lied to him! The unbearable pain was the sign of a soulmate bond forming

The only thing that made the pain and the tears worth it, was when Harry looked down and saw the name of the person that was made to love him.

                Draco Malfoy

Harry traced the letters on his tender skin and marveled at the name. He knew that everyone had a soulmate and that this wasn’t technically special… but to Harry it was. This meant that there really was someone out there that could love him. They might not, Draco could even dislike him. But there was still a chance of love. Maybe they could be friends? Maybe they could be enemies? Maybe they would just be people who pretended to get along? None of that mattered, Harry would take Draco in any way possible. Because somewhere there was someone peering down at their own palm and seeing his name on it, wondering what kind of person Harry was.

Hopefully, he would live up to the expectation.

“No nephew of mine is going to be homosexual!” Those words were reverberating inside Harry’s mind as he tried to make himself smaller, even in the privacy of his cupboard. What did it matter if his soulmate was a boy? Didn’t it just show that a boy could love him? Didn’t it just show that love happened in many different ways? Why did it matter if the name was a boy?

Personally, Harry had never even heard of the name Draco before. Did it sound masculine? Wasn’t his Uncle being a little presumptuous?

Harry closed his eyes and tried so hard to picture what his soulmate would look like. Would they be a boy? Would they be a girl? Would they have long hair? Short hair? Would they have red hair? Black hair? Blonde hair? Brown hair? He didn’t care either way. The beating of his heart just ached for understanding. That’s all he wanted from his soulmate was understanding. If they could look at him and see someone worth taking a chance, then that’s all he could ask for.

“Draco.” Harry whispered, tracing the name on his palm softly.

His entire youth, the Dursleys forced Harry to wear gloves. They didn’t want anyone to see that his soulmate was a boy. Or even someone with such an odd name.

At first, it really bothered Harry. His mark wasn’t an inconvenience or a hindrance. It wasn’t a bad thing, nor did it deserve to be hidden away. He was proud of the name on his hand. Proud of whoever Draco Malfoy was as a person.

This was special. The name on his palm meant everything to Harry. It was something that was just for him. Something to treasure. So, in the end, it was okay to keep it covered. The rest of the world didn’t need to know who his soulmate was. They weren’t the ones who would be there. They weren’t the ones who would love Draco.

Harry found himself caressing his soulmate mark often and usually subconsciously. It was a form of comfort. Every time Uncle Vernon threw him into his cupboard, he would rub the mark and imagine that Draco would take him away from them. Every time Aunt Petunia would send him to bed without dinner, he would peer at the name and wish that Draco was there to comfort him. Every time Dudley and his gang would bully him, he would press his fingers to the words softly and envision Draco coming to help him.

“Draco.” Harry whispered, eyes clenched and fingers roaming his hand. He wished that he could find his soulmate He hated the idea of waiting until he was older to search for Draco.

Soulmates weren’t always something great. Harry saw the stories, read the paper and watched the news. Sometimes, even being a soulmate can’t stop the evil that can lurk in some people. Everyone has a soulmate. Murderers, criminals, thieves and everyone in between has someone that was meant for them. The marks don’t discriminate.

… But they also aren’t always fair. Mrs. Figg across the street, her soulmate died before she was born. His teacher’s soulmate committed suicide. Some people have more than one soulmate but don’t want to share. Some don’t want a soulmate at all and refuse to acknowledge the marks on their hand. Some choose to just be friends. While others despise their soulmate.

It would kill Harry if he finally found Draco to only to be turned away. The years spent picturing who his soulmate was couldn’t have been a waste. It couldn’t. What kind of justice would that be? He hoped beyond hope that somewhere Draco was of the same belief as him.

                Please let him want me.

Fairy Thomas (au)

So after seeing this post about Thomas being a fairy I decided to think for a little bit about an AU where the fictional Sanders Sides version of Thomas is actually secretly one of the fair folk.

This is based off of a combination of both actual folklore and stuff I just made up because I’m a writer and I’ve had fairy rules made up for my worlds for a very long time and there’s often huge gaps in fairy stories anyways so there’s a lot of freedom of you’re writing from their perspective. Sorry about how unorganized it is. There’s a lot more of it under the cut.

  • He’s a changeling and has been fully aware of this for as long as he can remember but he actually doesn’t care. Human world is much more interesting than living in a forest or a swamp so heck off with that. He’s staying here.
  • No idea where he originally came from. No idea about who he replaced or what happened to them. But there’s no use worrying about that now.
  • His sides when he usually talks to them don’t actually look human. At least not completely. Logan’s eyes seem to be off somehow. Virgil’s teeth a bit sharp. Roman’s skin a little too perfect to the point where it’s slightly disturbing. Or it would be to a human. Deceit is even more snake like and Patton? Don’t know. He should be normal but there’s something missing there that if you saw him you’d just feel something isn’t right.
  • Thomas isn’t disturbed by them. They look pretty normal in his opinion.
  • Hair dye seems a bit more magical to him than perhaps it should.
  • When he says he likes meeting new people nobody knows that doesn’t just include human people. Sometimes he’ll go hang out in a field and just wait for a curious spirit of the field or pixie to come and interrogate him because what’s a changeling this old doing out here? They usually find him charming enough to not try and pull a trick on him. (Also they can tell he’s too smart to fall for it)
  • Sometimes he’ll do something like hold up a common human object and be like “This is a refrigerator magnet. It sticks to stuff.” to one of the spirit or something he knows and they will think it’s the coolest thing ever and he gets advice and weird magic trinkets in exchange for magnets and broken shoelaces and candy bars.
  • Sometimes time moves differently around Thomas. Nobody ever mentions it in that universe but there’s kind of an understanding that everybody just kind of… gets.
  • People will sometimes watch his videos thinking it was so fast paced it must’ve been five minutes, but they’ve been watching for half an hour.
  • His friends never used to get why he hated parties so much. Then one time he went to a pretty intense one. Everyone thought it lasted well into the morning but then it turned out when people started going home that it wasn’t even eleven o’ clock yet.
  • Now it’s just understood somehow that you don’t peer pressure Thomas into going to parties.
  • Deceit feels very strongly that he should be more active than he is, but Thomas isn’t having it. He’s here to just lead a normal human life thank you very much. He’s gone this long without falling down that rabbit hole.
  • It wasn’t just the rainforest rap that led him to studying chemical engineering. He can hear what’s going wrong with the environment. He can feel it and has for his entire life.
  • One time, only one time did something slip on accident. Joan caught just half a glimpse of teeth. A half imagined flash of the eyes. They dismissed it as a trick of the light. And even if it wasn’t, this is Thomas we’re talking about. He’s fine.
  • That is the height he was when you met him last time, right? Right? Probably.
  • Yeah, it’s just camera angles that make the sides look different. Camera angles and lighting. That’s a promise. Well, that’s probably part of it anyways.
  • Not one for contracts or strange tricksy things. He’s too human for that at this point. But if you did something bad towards one of his friends don’t act so shocked when your electric car keys stop working.
  • He knows the rules of the fairy land (always give promised payment, never thank someone for a favor, etc.) but only heeds them when talking to fairies. He’s too human to act like the rest of them.
  • He can’t really explain why certain things excite him so much. He’s been living as a human his entire life after all. But it’s still all so cool! Humans can make pictures with their hands! Wow!!! There’s small creatures that’ll love you just for existing? Awesome!!! Everything is so pretty!
  • He doesn’t know what exactly he would look like if he didn’t change but he expects that his sides give some hints and sometimes he slips a little bit. He’s pretty sure he has sharp teeth. That’s kinda cool he guesses. Sometimes the eyes start to look a little less normal.
  • He has told one human person in his entire life what he is. They’re not seeing him anymore.
  • Keeping such a big secret should make him upset. Logan has said so, but that’s such a human thing to say. Does he really entirely think like a human? Not really. And since he figured out that he’s gay it’s not like he’s keeping things from himself anymore. For the most part being different in that way isn’t a bother.
  • It wasn’t just human kids that used to bully him.
  • Sometimes when he goes running at night it feels like he’s trying to remember something. Something he shouldn’t remember. The night seems to have a lot to say to him but it’s like he’s forgotten how to listen. Or maybe he never wanted to in the first place. He’s not sure. Another reason to turn the music up loud.
  • He starts to think after a while that if he asked his sides exactly where he came from they might know, but this is one area he’s gonna let Deceit hold back for a while longer.
  • You’d think that he’d be constantly uncomfortable, living as a human in the iron age and all, but steel is extremely purified iron and mixed with other stuff so it doesn’t really bug him. If he happens to touch old iron it bothers him a bit but not enough that he absolutely has to avoid it. He thinks he might’ve built up a resistance to it after living as a human for so long. He’s honestly more allergic to cats then he is iron.
  • Spilling salt is an absolute nightmare. So are blackberry bushes.
  • He’s attracted to laughter and childish laughter especially. That’s part of the reason he wants to make his channel accessible. The idea of children laughing at what he does is enough of a reason for him to keep doing it.
  • If most people he knows ever found out he’s not fully human they’d probably feel like that makes sense actually. He’s normal enough but there’s always been something off. Something unique to him.
  • The only reason he’d ever tell anyone after getting rejected that first time is if somebody he knows made a stupid deal with a fairy. Catastrophic things rarely happen though so it’s likely he’ll be able to go the rest of his life keeping it a secret.
  • Fairy magic? Doesn’t use it on purpose usually. He is quite charming though. Logan has been thinking about trying to figure out how it works for years but whenever he tries someone’s cell phone always inevitably ends up getting shorted out by accident so it’s probably best that he just doesn’t mess with it much.
  • He thinks being able to see your imagination as clearly as he does when he’s talking to himself is normal. It’s not normal. If anyone with the sight ever walked in on him talking to himself they’d probably be freaked out by the ghost like monster things hanging out in his living room and he would have a lot of explaining to do.
The Complexity of Hanzo Shimada's Character

I have been doing a significant amount of character research of Hanzo Shimada from Overwatch, something I preform frequently when I am interested in a character. Much of my research includes accordances among fans about his behavoir and personality, since Blizzard has not fleshed out tremedously such in canon.

This is what I found so far:

  • Hanzo, as well as his brother Genji, have been raised in an environment that has emphasized cultural values that today many modern Japanese, as well as other members of the developed world, recognize as unhealthy and inevitably counter-productive standards of morals. I suspect Sojiro Shimada had become aware to some level that the rules running the Shimada clan’s world were at the very best amoral, and thus tried haphazardly to shield his sons, especially Genji, from such ideals; I say haphazardly, because it more or less came across as a game of favoritism to Hanzo.

  • Hanzo in particular bared the brunt of his environment’s expectations; whether this was because he had a much more open ear at the sound of ‘the heir to the clan’, or because being the first son had him entirely susceptible and exposed, I am unsure. He nevertheless endured the pressure through coerced sense of pride, though in reality surviving with a suppressed emotional conscious and constantly mismatching moral convictions.

  • Hanzo is arrogant, a text-book perfectionist, a callous opportunist, and thus has placed himself on a very high pedestal- a nominally predictable way to cope with fear and feelings of inferiority. However, despite his large ego, Hanzo is by no means a narcissist in the technical sense. If this were the case, he would not hold such affection towards his 'dishonored’ brother, nor his deceased father who had his own flaws. He is also an unconscious hypocrite.

  • Hanzo is capable of love. Hanzo is capable of sympathy, if not empathy, but driven to take both human traits as weakness, Hanzo is unable to express well nor evenly his emotional capacity for others.

  • Hanzo likely has a history of alcohol abuse, as well as vunerablity to sucidal idealization, depressive-onset ennui, sudden and violent emotional outbursts that are fettered by day to day agitation.

  • Hanzo’s perception of himself is a tower upon festered personal needs left long unmet and ignored; as such, he may be found by most anyone else but Genji as extremely uncooperative and intolerable outside of a common goal. For a love interest, he will be amiable-avoidant: he will certainly be less harsh. He may even seek intimacy - but he will inevitably reject his own attachment, leading subsequently to a sensible other dismissing his devotion, questioning his love and humanity, and invoking resentment later on down the line.

  • Hanzo is an extremely intelligent logisist and a talented strategist. I imagine math is his other favorite subject.

  • In the event of life and death, Hanzo would choose for those he cared over himself, regardless of his ego and regardless of his 'honor’ complex.

Edit 11/26/2017, because apparently I can’t keep all of my notes together:

  • Hanzo’s allure to wealth and power puts him on a dubious see-saw of integrity; painfully aware of his own definition of purpose, his brother’s supposed death unsurfacing the dismissed merits of compassion and mercy deep within his person. Yet juxtaposing his individual morality is the very virtues of his upbringing, that though he has turned away from the old, intensive rights of his clan, he remains impounded by their foundations. Should he, or rather were he, be tempted to satisfy the fabricated entitlements of his blood and tradition, Hanzo may not necessarily find himself succumbing, but indeed embattled between his humanity and his self-impeached crown.

  • Hanzo is a practical man. Given the situation, he will not kill or injure lest it is necessary, and like wise he will lend his aid to others if politics requires it. However, outside of those he has grown close to, rarely will he act out of charity, finding it wasteful for not only himself but also for the person in need, and if it doesn’t align with his own endeavors and or benefits him in some way. In this same light, Hanzo’s practical-mindedness, along with his experience as a crime leader, makes him an excellent negotiator, off-cuff interrogator, and able to maintain his composure under significant pressure

In essence, Hanzo is an incredibly flawed character of ambiguity on all fronts, and suffers from a fair amount of internal turmoil. However, how he presents himself outwardly serves as a shell for what he is within, which exists even as he refuses to acknowledge it. Given time, pleasant relationships and plenty of shattering wake up calls, Hanzo may yet come towards his truer self.

Could you write something about malec right after they adopted max? (Their kid not max lightwood lol) thanks!

He’s holding a baby.

A baby.

A baby.

Catarina stares through the still-swinging door of his loft, frozen at the sight of Magnus swaying in his living room, backlit by the glow coming in through his French doors. It’s a bit of a shock to see him wearing loose jeans and a plain white t-shirt, face bare of makeup, ears and fingers and neck free of flashing silver besides that one ring he never takes off. He hasn’t noticed her, his eyes riveted to the bundle in his arms that squeals every time Magnus twirls, a little blue hand popping up to grab at Magnus’ nose.

“Hi, baby,” he coos, voice unbearably soft like just-washed cotton, all warmth and sunshine as he dances gracefully with the child – his son – cradled in his grasp. “Hello.”

Then the sofa moves, pillows tumbling to the rug, and Catarina startles when she realizes that it’s Alec, stirring from a nap as he rubs his eyes, hair sticking up in every direction as he pushes himself to a seated position. Like Magnus, he doesn’t see her, gaze drawn instead like a magnet to his husband and the way he moves with their baby in his arms.

“You’re supposed to let him cry it out,” Alec says, voice scratchy as he stands and draws close to Magnus. He doesn’t sound mad, though, as he brushes a finger against a chubby blue cheek and smiles.

“I can’t help it, Alexander,” Magnus breathes. “I hate seeing him cry.”

“I know,” Alec says, moving so that he’s standing behind Magnus, hands resting lightly on his hips as he hooks his chin over Magnus’ shoulder.

Catarina isn’t an emotional woman. Between wars and famines and emergency room crises, she’s seen too many lifetimes of shit to be anything short of cynical. Yet watching them, she feels something aching behind her eyes, knowing she’s intruding on an intimate moment that belongs to them only. To this family.

Maybe it’s because she’s getting sentimental in her old age, or maybe it’s because she has a daughter of her own to take care of, but more likely it’s because it’s Magnus. It’s her best friend. The same man she’s drained too many bottles of whiskey with, the same man she’s seen shed silent tears over long-dead friends, the same man who for hundreds of years has always wanted children of his own… now he’s smiling, smiling until there are crinkles next to his eyes as he leans into Alec’s embrace and watches their son. Their own.

She clears her throat, stepping further into the loft and chuckling when she gets a closer look at their faces.

“Are those dark circles I see?” she asks with a smirk, noticing how they don’t pull apart at all even when they see her. “What has the world come to?”

Magnus laughs unabashedly and shakes his head. “I missed you too.” He shifts a little, and for the first time the blankets part to reveal their baby’s face, muted pink overlaying the blue of his cheeks, his eyes half-lidded as he yawns. “Want to say hello?”

“It’s what I came to do. Can I hold him?”

Magnus nods and slowly hands the baby over, a furrow in his brow as he cups his neck and his bottom, carefully settling him into Catarina’s arms.

“Max,” he says gently, “This is your godmother. She’s among my top ten favorite people in this dimension.”

She scoffs. “Don’t listen to him,” she says, bopping the baby on the nose, melting a little at his toothless grin. “Let me tell you all about the time in 1976 when we went to a Queen concert in Hyde Park and your dad —”

“Cat,” Alec says fondly, “At least wait until he can roll over on his own to tell him about dumb things Magnus has done.”

They break out in laughter as Magnus rolls his eyes. The shaking of her shoulders rouses Max, who lets out an indignant little shriek before he starts blowing spit bubbles.

Their amusement mellows gradually until all three of them are watching Max again, who keeps trying to catch Catarina’s finger with his own tiny hand.

“He’s beautiful,” she says. “He’s lucky to have you two for parents.”

Magnus and Alec share a look, that silent conversation that happens between two people who know each other better than they do anybody else in the world.

“We’re lucky to have him,” Alec says, and Magnus quirks his lips in agreement as he reaches for his son again.

The End, the final book in the ASOUE series deviates substantially from the twelve previous books in the series because it doesn’t follow the traditional narrative that the other books adhere to at all. In the other books it always goes something like the orphans wind up in a new place, they meet someone they think can be an ally to them and then that person winds up either dying or being ineffectual or compromised in some sort of way by the arrival of Count Olaf and the orphans are forced to flee from danger, hoping along the way that eventually when all this is said and done they can find some nice quiet place to live, where they aren’t constantly in danger.

In The End, by contrast, they arrive with Count Olaf to a new location with people who are quick to eliminate Olaf as a danger for them and attempt to bring them into their peaceful happy lives. In actuality, the story could have ended there. They had no real reason to go against the rules of the island or question the authority of Ishmael, and none of the islanders or Ishmael were rude to them at all. The only reason they returned to Count Olaf and rebelled against the island is because they thought it was boring. After twelve books of adventure after adventure, trying to escape danger time and time again, the Baudelaire orphans realize that they actually don’t know how to exist in safety.

Which seems to defeat the entire point of the Baudelaire’s quest for safety in the other twelve books, but I think it’s an important point about what happens after the worst has already happened. The Baudelaires have reached safety after so long, but they’re so used to not being safe that they don’t even know how to be comfortable in a safe environment. They’ve wanted this for so long but once it finally came they realized that they were never prepared for it.

This is a common trope in the lives of people who have survived insurmountable trauma. They spend the duration of their trauma clinging to this hope of a better life outside of it and imagining a perfect world where they are safe all the time, but then when they escape they realize that they’ve become so used to their trauma world that the regular world seems completely foreign to them. Furthermore, once they’ve physically escaped their trauma they’re left with the second, more daunting task of emotionally escaping it and moving on.

The End isn’t an escape from danger in the traditional sense, but more a look into what we do once we have escaped danger and how danger eventually escapes us. Most books end when the danger has been resolved, the plot has been fulfilled and everything has been worked out. But ASOUE shows that even after the danger has been resolved, everything will never be worked out completely. Life isn’t a book with a simple exposition, climax and resolution, it is a series of unfortunate events and even after we’ve conquered our demons we still have to live knowing what happened to us and where and when and that antagonist is a much harder one to defeat.

                                          “My love had been frozen,
Deep blue, but you painted me golden.”

Ever since the curtain came down at the last 1989 World Tour show in Melbourne I’ve waited and waited for the day I might get to see you return to our shores for shows. In that time, almost 3 years so much has changed but what has changed the most is my happiness because of somebody I met because of you Taylor.

From the moment I met Maddie @s-wiftlie I knew she was special and every day we have been together I’ve dreamed of the day we would get to go to one of your shows together and that day is almost upon us.

Lyrics that deeply resonate between us both, the outfits you will see us wear at the Perth show represent the journey we have both been on to find each other. A frozen blue heart adorns Maddie’s chest on a dress that is laden with icicles. With frosted makeup, she holds an ice cube sign that reads “my love had been frozen deep blue”. This heart is shattered by the glimmering gold glow of my heart, that reads “but you painted me golden”.

I’d love to be able to thank you for all the positive change you’ve brought into my life and being able to meet you with my best friend and the person who means the most in the world to me would be the most amazing dream come true.

We’ll be travelling from Adelaide on the morning of the Perth show and you’ll find us in the crowd at the end of the left side runway in Section A2, Row B, Seats 16-17 where we’ll be dancing, jumping and screaming out every word!!

P.S. Maddie would looooove if you could sing Superman at the B-Stage that night.

It’s all so close and we can’t wait to see you! ❤️
