what does that one post say

matt stans really do have the biggest victim complexes ever. “let me love matt in peace”. no one’s telling you that you can’t love matt? saying your entire fandom doesn’t have bad apples does nothing because obviously you guys do have a fuckin problem in your little subfandom? you guys have racists in here. you may not do what “the other matt stans” are doing and you may not even be like “those other matt stans” but jesus at least try to acknowledge that there’s a reason the white boy with three lines and no personality that isn’t taken from established characters (2 of which are poc) is so well loved. fanon matt is flirtatious, a jokester, uses humor to mask how he’s feeling, troubled, kind. all of those are from lance. people want matt to take over as black paladin instead of allura who makes 1000% more sense to be bp over matt “i sure love them peas, dad” holt.

you’re not doing poc, especially latinxs and mentally ill/disabled folks, bc this racism was heavily targeted at lance and shiro, any favors by telling everyone to calm down and not make things into such an issue. telling people to delete racist anons or “trolls” and telling them not to be offended so you don’t have to think of this? well guess what just because you guys are having fun and shit doesn’t mean that poc have to deal with this shit in silence because it’s ruining your good time with your fave tertiary white boy.

hell even i loved the occasional matt posts and messing around and thinking about what he could be like and what he could bring to the team. but this matt love and appreciation would not be this big if he was not a boy or white and it doesnt mean you love him any less for acknowledging this and acknowledging the problems that are clearly present rn

This is why Lacan speaks of the unconscious as a ‘sliding of the signified beneath the signifier’, as a constant fading and evaporation of meaning, a bizarre ‘modernist’ text which is almost unreadable and which will certainly never yield up its final secrets to interpretation.

Lacan, as we have seen in our discussion of Freud, regards the unconscious as structured like a language. This is not only because it works by metaphor and metonymy: it is also because, like language itself for the post-structuralists, it is composed less of signs — stable meanings — than of signifiers. If you dream of a horse, it is not immediately obvious what this signifies: it may have many contradictory meanings, may be just one of a whole chain of signifiers with equally multiple meanings. The image of the horse, that is to say, is not a sign in Saussure’s sense - it does not have one determined signified tied neatly to its tail - but is a signifier which may be attached to many different signifieds, and which may itself bear the traces of the other signifiers which surround it. (I was not aware, when I wrote the above sentence, of the word-play involved in ‘horse’ and ‘tail’: one signifier interacted with another against my conscious intention.) The unconscious is just a continual movement and activity of signifiers, whose signifieds are often inaccessible to us because they are repressed. This is why Lacan speaks of the unconscious as a ‘sliding of the signified beneath the signifier’, as a constant fading and evaporation of meaning, a bizarre ‘modernist’ text which is almost unreadable and which will certainly never yield up its final secrets to interpretation.

On Hot Pepper Gaming

Hot Pepper Gaming had its last episode today and I wanted to write something personal about it. I had this joke that I would always say when somebody talked to me about the channel - that it was sort of silly how the most successful thing I’ve ever done was the dumbest idea I’ve ever had. Classic self-deprecation, but the more I said it the more I realized just how important this dumb idea was to me.

Myself, Erin, and Jared started HPG half as a joke and half as a creative outlet to sort of prove that we knew what we were talking about. When we began, we were all lower-rung creatives working predominantly at Maker Studios - a YouTube multi-channel network. My only claim-to-fame at that point in my creative career was that I had something small to do with the Harlem Shake becoming a thing, and I really, REALLY didn’t want that to be the only accomplishment I had in my life.

I approached Erin about the idea, who called up Jared to join up with us. With a borrowed camera, $20 worth of craft supplies, and a weekend of work, we had shot the first three episodes of Hot Pepper Gaming. We planned to post weekly for a couple months regardless of if it gained traction or not, but on the first episode we were already growing faster than we could follow.

It’s sort of a funny thing how collaboration works. I remember being completely fine with filming Hot Pepper Gaming on a white background, but Erin’s simple suggestion that we use a yellow backdrop meant so much to the branding and style of the channel that I don’t think we would have succeeded without it. Erin, Jared and I all had something to contribute to the project, all of which combined together to create something much bigger than the sum of our parts. And because of this we were able to travel around the world, interact with fans, and sit in rooms with people we respected not only as their creative equals, but later on as their dear friends.

There’s so many great stories that I’ll post whenever I get nostalgic about Hot Pepper Gaming, but for now I just wanted to say something small that I think might describe my feelings better than me droning on about this will. We used to film Hot Pepper Gaming out of Erin’s old apartment, and after the first shoot we decided to grab dinner at a bar next door. I remember us all sitting at the bar, eating pub burgers and toasting to whatever the hell we just did, in our post-pepper andrenaline-rushed euphoria. I remember one of us asking hey, what if this actually does well, and then us all shrugging and laughing.

I’m currently on a flight back from Montreal, Canada, where Jared and I participated in Square Bowl, a yearly charity event that this year supported Doctors Without Borders. We were sitting on a balcony of an apartment in Le Plateau-Mont-Royal, watching the sun set over a park that was freshly-covered with snow. He and I talked for a while about how we were raising money for an important charity with a group of friends and creative collaborators we loved; and how so many of them we knew, specifically, because we had hurt them with hot peppers.

I don’t know what I would say to 24-year-old, fighting-tooth-and-nail-to-create-stuff-and-have-people-care-about-them Vernon if I had the chance, but to think about myself then and see myself now is surreal. I owe so much to this dumb little project, and I’ll never forget it.

Thanks

Archive Of Our Own has outpaced fanfiction.net

In 2015, the rate of new works started per day on the non-profit archive exceeded that of the older fanfiction.net, and this fan-run project is set to surpass the fastest growth of either archive in 2017.

Below the cut, I explain where these numbers come from, look more closely at the seasonal variation in each archive, and the overall pace of fanworks being posted.

The skinny on sending Lin fanmail as of December 2016, according to his dad. To summarize:

The address is

4768 Broadway Unit 743
New York NY 10034

You will get a reply (somehow, eventually, I have no idea how he has time for this) even if you don’t include a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope). Do include an appropriate SASE if you are sending pictures or programs for him to sign. Gifts that are meaningful to you are okay, just nothing expensive.

He was dictating answers to interns when he was in New York, closing with his signature. (His handwriting is… super messy. Plus, that’s a lot of volume, when he does sit down to do it.) (eta: He does still handwrite some of the replies himself.) Here are some examples of replies people have posted on twitter. I’m not sure if he’s sent any from London yet, I think maybe one batch?

My advice is to feel free to send what you really want to say and then be very patient.

why we deserve a jung joon hyung/ahn min hyuk in our lives

let me just say something that we all have realised before but never really gotten into talking further:

the similarities between jung joon hyung and ahn min hyuk on the way they treat everyone around them and themselves says a lot about how they are as a person.

both joon hyung and min hyuk have their fair share of pain caused by their family or past relationships and yet it doesnt make them bad people or use it as an excuse to become assholes to everyone especially towards the girl they end up liking, just cause they have been “hurt”.

no matter what happened to them, the moment they met kim bok joo and do bong soon they started off with simple yet touching and genuine, comedic gestures such as teasing them and are so friendly with them in a way that isnt romantic (yet).

joon hyung was bok joo’s best friend before anything else and he respected and supported her so much; he only then realised slowly that he liked her and when he came to terms with that, he wasn’t trying to push her away or tried avoiding her: he tells her he likes her! and he wasn’t even afraid to admit how much he liked her before and throughout the entire time they were dating!!

before even progressing with their relationship, joon hyung even asked for a chance for her to be with him - “don’t like me as your boyfriend? that’s okay, you can tell me that.” he would still respect her wishes even if it means turning him down.

as well as with min hyuk, he’s always wanted someone to protect him from day one and that’s what he saw in bong soon. he wasn’t afraid to admit that he was scared to her, even telling her bits and pieces about his life to her because besides being his bodyguard, she was also a shoulder for him to lean on when he can - he didn’t completely let her in, he had his moments especially when his “brother” kept making death threats, thus resulting in wanting to be alone. as time flew by, he realised how much bong soon meant to him and started opening up to her even more and more, and it was so pure.

min hyuk is as precious as joon hyung is because he also isn’t afraid to show bong soon how much he cares and admires her: him getting hurt was way better than getting bong soon hurt.

lets be real: these two boys don’t possess the most extravagant thing you would expect a typical kdrama lead to have yet they have the most genuine, pure and beautiful personality and that says something: they treat their girls with respect and support them no matter what; joon hyung with bok joo’s weightlifting and family problems, and min hyuk with bong soon’s inability to control her powers. not to mention the way they look at their woman like she’s the universe to them (swoon !!!)

from their strength to their appearances, how they talk and how comfortable the girls are with their own true selves, bok joo with her weightlifting and eating so much, and bong soon with her super powers, joon hyung and min hyuk find them attractive and beautiful no matter WHAT and that, everybody, says it all.

all in all - jung joon hyung and ahn min hyuk are so fucking PERFECT and one reason being is that they showcase what every man, boy, male, whatever should possess on treating their girl/SO and yet it melts our hearts SO MUCH because we rarely see this in real life!

we all deserve a joon hyung/min hyuk in our lives

Let me tell you something about power imbalances

Since the Otayuri-discourse is getting really annoying, I would like to tell you something. Power imbalances can have an effect on every relationship. Romantic as well as platonic. A power imbalance can turn into an unhealthy relationship of any kind. But there is one thing, that everyone seems to ignore: A power imbalance itself does not cause abusive behavior. On its own its neither good nor bad. Its the way it is used, that makes the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationship.

A power imbalance is like a “tool”. It can be used by an abuser to take advantage of its victim. The abusers keep themselves on the higher level to maintain the imbalance. This can lead to physical and emotional abuse. The abuser can easily pressure the victim into doing things that they aren’t comfortable with. For example: Older friends pressuring the younger one into drinking alcohol/older lover pressuring younger to have sex despite them not being ready for it. And this is obviously a horrible thing.

But a power imbalance can also have a positive effect. In a healthy relationship the more powerful part tries to minimize the imbalance. They don’t see the other on as lower. They want to be on an equal level. The imbalance can be used to help the younger one grow, while also making sure that they are safe don’t go over their limits. It can be reassuring to have someone more experienced that can help you in life and share their experiences. One great example for a healthy relationship with a power imbalance in the beginning is a ship you all love: Victuuri!

At the start of the show Yuuri is a loner. He doesnt have many friends and the only thing he really cares for is skating (and Victor of course). He has huge anxiety and really lacks in confidence. He idolizes Victor and therefore sees him as above him.  Also, Yuuris love life before Victor is pretty much non existent and he just becomes a blushing mess at the mere mention of eros. On the other hand we have Victor “Sexiest-Man-Alive” Nikiforov. He is way more experienced and confident than Yuuri and has had a few relationships in the past. All this puts a huge imbalance on Victors side. We see this in the beginning, when Victor was really pushy, thinking Yuuri was still as confident and flirty as he was at the banquet, making Yuuri feel visibly uncomfortable. When Victor sees this, he tones down the flirting to keep it at a pace that Yuuri can comfortably move along with. We see Victor helping Yuuri becoming more confident in his abilities and more comfortable with his sexuality. Victor used the power imbalance to turn the idol-fan-relationship into a loving relationship between two equals.

This concludes, that a power imbalance itself does not automatically make a relationship bad. Its the mindset of the more powerful person, that determines if this imbalance can be healthy or not.

Now lets talk about Otayuri!

First of all, Yuri is not the pure, innocent, little child, that needs to be sheltered from everything, that you all seem to think he is. We are talking about the “kid” who wanted to skate to eros, because he thought it would fit him better. The kid who watched Yuuri and Chris pole dancing and kept tons of photos of it. The kid who told Mila to stop acting horny after breaking up with her boyfriend. Most 15/16 years old boys are not innocent angels…  Also, Yuri is actually quite mature for his age. Yuri moved away from his home to St. Petersburg when he was around 10 years old. He is the main provider for his family since his junior debut. Growing up away from home, with this high responsibilities makes you mature faster. He committed his life to figure skating. He had the determination and disciplin to win GPF gold on his senior debut. This level of dedication, endless training, without complaining, to work towards a goal, is a sign of maturity. Sure, sometimes he acts childish and on impulse, but so does Victor, the guy who pauses his career for a year, travels to Japan and suddenly shows up naked at a hot spring, because of his crush on a drunk Yuuri.

We have seen Otabek and Yuri both supporting and admiring each other. We see Otabek helping Yuri to grow. Yuri doesnt act like an angry brat with him. He is much calmer and happier around him.  Kubo even said that Otabek sees them as equals. There is only a small power imbalance between them. Its even smaller than between Victor and Yuuri. And since their relationship is based on mutual respect and support, and Otabek wants them to be equal, there is not even the slightest hint, why this relationship would be abusive in any way. To me this looks like the perfect base for a healthy relationship. So what makes you think that Otabek would be a predator? What makes you think he would take advantage of him? Why would he harm Yuri? This is what bothers me the most about this discourse. By saying this ship would be unhealthy , disgusting and bad, you are accusing Otabek of being an abusive asshole. And this magnificent, loving character does not deserve this hate.

This post is obviously not meant to say that all relationships with age differences are totally ok. This is meant to explain, that it is not always automatically bad. There are many unhealthy relationships where both people are the same age or where the abuser is the younger one. Age alone is not what makes a relationship healthy or unhealthy. The mindset of the individual person is!

There are probs already posts like this but I haven’t seen one so ima say it anyways

They didn’t design Keith’s dad to look similar to Shiro on accident okay hear me out

It’s so clear to me that Keith does miss and want his father around. The pained look on his face when he says ‘of course I do’ in his little hallucination dream sequence makes that painfully obvious. In Keith’s bio on the Voltron site it says that he joined the garrison after being orphaned at a young age.
So what I’m thinking is… little newly orphaned Keith joining the garrison because he has nowhere else to go/live and he misses his father. And then he meets shiro and imprints on him because he makes the connection in his brain like ‘looks like father = new father figure’
Keith looks up to shiro and finds this paternal bond with him, and Shiro takes Keith under his wing. That’s why their father/son/brother dynamic is so important to the story and honestly I think it has so much potential to be interesting as long as they write it properly. It’s so painfully clear that they see eachother as family and I want more info about it!!

Dear MatPat “fans”

Look, if you weren’t one of the thousands of people to insult MatPat for his Undertale videos, you can kindly ignore this. But for those rabid Undertale fans who DID, this is for you.

I don’t care whether or not those theories impressed you. I don’t care whether or not you enjoy his content. I don’t CARE. Watching the first half of Mat’s video today absolutely shattered my heart. The fact that almost all of the fandom completely ATTACKED him for a fan made theory video is despicable. Making theories for his channel can take MONTHS of work and effort. Do you find it morally right as a person to ridicule and mock him for almost an entire YEAR just because his theory didn’t match up to whatever you thought was canon? Do you think it was right to crush his spirit and make him afraid to post any more theories about such a popular game? I’m not saying that this particular theory was the best one he ever made, but so what? You DO NOT harass him online for ages upon ages just because you don’t agree with him! Why is being a decent person online so difficult for everyone? Why does this type of thing have to be so common and accepted all across Youtube?

Meeting the Pope was a huge honor for him, and now he can no longer look back on that experience as he should, with pride and happiness, because you took that away from him. You FAILED to see the subliminal message behind his gift, and you left him at the point of having to pause one of his theory videos just so he could share that. And you can see the tears he has in his eyes throughout that whole clip. Mat isn’t the type of person to make his feelings public, so this should be a GIANT embarrassment for you as a community, if you can even call yourself such. And the Undertale fandom doesn’t have just this one instance under their belt, either. Quite a few of you have been art thieves or just toxic people in general, and that definitely isn’t something to be proud about. So I have a request…

LEAVE THIS LAST UNDERTALE VIDEO ALONE. DON’T MAKE MATPAT TOO AFRAID TO EVEN CONSULT HIS FOLLOWING ABOUT THE EMOTIONAL ISSUES THIS SERIES HAS CAUSED HIM. JUST LEAVE HIM BE.

Listen up folks...

I’m not gonna talk about what sparked this rant. It doesn’t matter. What does matter is what I’m about to say.

I’m freaking done with the hate.

This SPN Family is supposed to be encouraging, accepting, we’re supposed to at least try to get along. Apparently that’s too hard. Now I could rant for hours about how some people in the SPN Family are treating eachother, but that’s for another time. This rant is going to be about one thing, the hate that the wives of the two leaders of this SPN Family receive. For this post I’m going to focus on one of the wives in particular…Danneel Ackles.

Once again as the Ackles family was nice enough to share parts of their life with us, people decide to be douchebags. This time Jensen isn’t happy with his life because he isn’t smiling in the photo of him & JJ. Also apparently comparing his kids to the comedy & tragedy is just a terrible thing to do. Oh, did you also hear that the twins might not be his because he said “my” twins instead of “our” twins. This is all Danneel’s fault too because she makes Jensen hate his life.

She can’t do anything right in the eyes of some people and it’s pissing me off. What did she do to cause so much hate? Now is the part when I ramble on about all she’s done…

She told her husband to go to a convention for the fans a few days after giving birth to twins.

Jensen told the story about finding out about the twins…JJ gave him a letter about it when he arrived at the airport…meaning he couldn’t be at the doctor appoint. How many doctor appointments do you think he had to miss because of filming?

She uses her “celebrity” to bring awareness to different events and situations going on in the world. I didn’t know about the Yulin dog festival until she talked about it. She does different work for a variety of charities, freaking google it if you don’t believe it.

Her husband is in a different country for the majority of the year while she stays back home in Austin. Have you ever had your husband away for a long period of time? Cause I have. It sucks. I complained about it on social media ALL THE TIME, but she never does.

She was a working woman in Hollywood. IMDb that shit. She was a steady worker in Hollywood however she slowed down/stopped when they had JJ.

Think of all the times she’s been out with her husband, cause that’s what Jensen is, he’s not “omg Jensen Ackles TV star”, he’s Jensen, the pain in the butt who forgot to take out the trash or forgot to grab the milk when he ran to the stores. Think about how many times she’s probably been out with him & had to deal with people coming up to talk to him. Now think about how many times this has happened & people have ignored her existence or used her as nothing more then a photo taker. Fans don’t mean too, but that shit probably happens more often then you think. I would get so sick of that.

Did I forget to mention how Jensen freaking lights up whenever someone brings up Danneel? CAUSE I WITNESSED IT IN PERSON A FEW WEEKS AGO & HE LEGIT LOOKS LIKE A TEENAGER IN LOVE WHEN SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT HER!

But no.

Apparently we’re supposed to hate her just cause.

Now is when the “haters” start to go, “you just like her because of who she’s married to.”

No haters.

No.

I knew about Danneel before I knew about Jensen. I know Danneel from One Tree Hill but I started to admire her when she hosted Maxim’s Hot 100 in 2009. She was the really pretty model/actress that I looked up to because she was funny & pretty. It wasn’t until I started watching Supernatural in 2015 that I had the “holy cow they’re married to each other” moment.

So.

To sum up this rant; you don’t have to like Danneel, just don’t be a dick. If you admire Jensen as a human, don’t disrespect his wife or his family.

Basically if you wouldn’t go up to a person & say it to their face, don’t say it. Plus why bother wasting your time hating something when you could spend your time on something you love?

End rant.

can I just Rant for a second here

Spiderman: Homecoming is so redeeming for me.

A lot of people grew up on Captain America, or Iron Man. I was that little period in between that was a bit too late for Cap, and a bit too early for Tony. I grew up on Spiderman. I watched every show I could get my hands on, cartoons, kids shows, movies, I read comics. Spiderman was my superhero, especially when I was a preteen and I needed someone like that, someone who was like me. Spiderman was like me. He is the epitome of a teenager. I mean, you just have to look at his one-liners to see it. Things like that came out of me and my brother’s mouth daily, and then I see a hero doing the same thing. Spiderman was MY hero.

I’ve already told you I watched the movies. Tobey Macguire’s Spiderman first came out in 2002, I was too young to watch it. So I knew the comics, the cartoons, all of Peter’s origins and villains and backstory, before I watched his films. I’m going to preface this by saying I only watched half of the first one. But it was SO disappointing.

What makes Spiderman a hero, to me, is not his powers. Anyone could be mutated and decide, “hey, I’m going to deal with this” or “hey, I should get this checked out”. Peter didn’t do that, because he already wanted to be a hero. His powers didn’t make him a hero. He was a hero before. Spiderman is not about his powers. But that’s what 2002 Spiderman did. They took away Peter’s intelligence, made him little more than a comic relief. His intelligence is an integral part of Peter. He made his own webshooters, they aren’t a part of his powers. That, that right there shows you how much of a hero he is. Because yeah, he can climb on walls and use super strength, but when you think of Spiderman, you don’t think of those, you think of his webs. Those are his weapons, and they don’t hurt anyone, and I swear to god if that doesn’t show you how much Peter is a hero, you’re looking at him wrong. And so there’s no better way to show you how much 2002 messed up Spiderman than the fact that the webs are part of his powers, that he had them and didn’t make them. They took away his intelligence, his ingenuity, and that is what Peter IS. They turn him nothing more than ridiculous, and it was so crushing.

Peter is brilliant. He’s an amazing scientist, in the cartoons he often has internships as well as being a photographer, and he made his own webshooters. In CACW, Tony fucking Stark is impressed with the webshooters. He’s amazed, Tony Stark is amazed, at what Peter made. Peter works with a box of scraps and creates amazing things. He doesn’t fight with brute force, he strategizes, which is what makes the webs work for him as a weapon.

On another note, Andrew Garfield’s 2012 film I saw in theaters when it came out. I was just 13, and idolized Spiderman, because he was one of us. I was disappointed that he was not in highschool (and by this I mean, I understand that they claimed Peter and Gwen were in highschool, but I’m sorry, Andrew and Emma don’t pass off as highschoolers. If they were going to completely invalidate the identity like that, they should have just set it in college. I never was able to fully immerse myself in the story and believe that Peter was in highschool, and he had so much freetime that it was even more unbelievable that he was a highschooler), because to me the fact that Peter has to balance his classes, part-time job, and crimefighting just once again shows his absolute dedication and brilliance and is an incredibly important aspect of his character, but it was fine. The 2012 film was much better than the 2002 film, but I still disliked it; it left me unsatisfied. Peter’s character was more true to form, but the movie itself was done badly and, I felt, focused too much on a romance for an origin story that (spoiler alert!!) didn’t even pan out. I understand that the movie was simply a set up for a series (that didn’t even work out well), but it was still incredibly disheartening. Perhaps the worst part was the fact that he WASN’T a highschooler, because I felt like they were invalidating teenagers and an important part of my identity at the time. I think the fact that Peter is a teenager is incredibly influential over his entire character, and the way he fights and speaks.  But I was also incredibly disappointed that they didn’t even stay true to Peter’s origin story!! Who is the Lizard? Where was Harry?

Back to Spiderman: Homecoming. I was so ecstatic when they included Spiderman in CACW. I was even more excited when they released who would be playing him. Finally, Peter is a teenager played by someone who can pass off as an actual teenager. Finally, he is back to his brilliant roots (”I can’t” “Why not?” “I have homework…”). It is so redeeming. Everything that was incredibly important to Peter’s character which has been taken away in the past is back.

He’s an awkward teenager, but still incredibly brilliant. He has trouble with communication. Aunt May and school are important to him, just as important as saving people (Not the world. PEOPLE). He’s not afraid to stand up to someone, even if they’re someone he believes in and looks up to (examples: see CACW). He banters during fights but is still badass. He’s fascinated by things he doesn’t understand, willing to learn. He tries too hard. He is a teenager, in every sense of the word.

I’m most looking forward to Tony’s role in Homecoming. Because Peter is exactly like Tony. He is an innovator, an inventor. He’s brilliant, too brilliant for his own good, and has been alienated for it. He lost his parents young, but has a few good friends. And he believes in people. Like Tony, he doesn’t want to save the world. He just wants to save people. He believes that people are important. That’s why he’s a hero – that’s why Tony’s a hero. Neither one of them could give it up, because they can’t give up on people. They’ll fight for people, just as much as they’ll fight for what they believe in. There are so many parallels between them, and Tony saying “I wanted you to be better” told me that he sees them to. I am so excited to see that relationship.

I am incredibly hopeful for Spiderman: Homecoming, and I hope it does Peter the justice none of the other movies have.

ok but when ben sings words fail, he emphasizes “or would they hate it too..” with such passion but right after he says that line, he does a little nod and evan is such a complex character that just that one nod gives the audience the idea that evan hates himself and has faced rejection countless numbers of times like THAT MESSES WITH ME LIKE WHAT :(

Cassian Andor: A Character Analysis

Before I begin, I would like to make 2 things perfectly clear:
1.  I am not a therapist or anything like that. I am just stating my opinions/observations/assumptions. None of which need be taken seriously.
2.  Here there be spoilers.
Now, let’s get started, shall we?

Who he is:

Cassian Jeron Andor is a loner; he has maybe one friend at the start of the movie. He is quiet; he rarely says more than needs to be said at any given moment. Both of these traits stem from one: practicality. Cassian is an unbelievably practical man. He doesn’t bother with friends because he doesn’t see the point. He doesn’t get very emotional (even though he does have emotions) because what would that accomplish? He’s a no-nonsense, get-in, get-out, focus-on-the-mission kind of guy. This is likely a result of his childhood (or lack thereof), but it is also not a bad thing. It’s simply the way he operates.

What he is:

Loyal. To a fault. Once he decides on a path (or a person), he will not leave it. A long time ago, he chose to align with the Rebellion. And so a rebel he is, and a rebel he will stay. Even when being such requires him to do things he doesn’t want to do. Which brings us to…

How he feels (at the beginning of Rogue One):

When we first meet Cassian, he is burnt out. He is still a good spy, soldier, captain, ect., but he lacks conviction. He doesn’t fight because he wants to, but because he thinks he has to. To put it bluntly, he’s in a dysfunctional relationship with the Rebellion. (Odd way to describe it, yes, but I’ve been in a relationship like this before. Please bear with me while I explain.) He gives everything to the rebel cause: his time, his skills, his opinions, and, most importantly, his morals. He lies, steals, kills, and/or lets die, if the mission requires it. All the while, he tells himself that it’s not really wrong, because he’s not doing it for himself. He’s doing it for something he cares about- the Rebellion. This does not make his actions right, of course- murder is murder, no matter the reasons behind it. And Cassian feels this, even if he doesn’t admit it. Saying anything he does is wrong is the same as saying the Rebellion is wrong, and that completely contradicts his “Rebellion = Good” mindset, so he pushes his guilt away. He stuffs his opinions, and, at times, gets angry at himself for having them at all. As Chirrut puts it, he is in a prison of his own making. But fortunately for him (and all of us RebelCaptain shippers), he meets Jyn.

What Jyn means (to Cassian):

At first, Cassian thinks Jyn Erso is nothing but trouble. She is reckless, unpredictable, and selfish. In other words, she does what she wants, when she wants. And that is a very big problem to Cassian, who never does what he really wants to do, deep down inside. But as he soon learns on Jedha, what Jyn wants to do is pretty… great. He witnesses firsthand her kindness, bravery, and selflessness as she risks her life for random kids, risks her safety for his own, and risks getting shot for his only friend, a snarky droid. And she didn’t do any of it because she was told to, or because of the mission. She did it only because she wanted to. This awakens something in Cassian. Call it jealously, if you like. He wants what she has- the freedom to do the right thing, even if it means disobeying orders, even if he doesn’t have permission, even if it’s not practical. He wants to be free to choose. In his mind, Jyn quickly changes from a troublemaker to the embodiment of his trapped morality. And that’s when the real fun begins.

What he’s going through:

So, as stated above, Cassian is devoted to the Rebel cause. But as the movie progresses, he starts to feel a kind of loyalty to the cause that is Jyn. Unfortunately, these two causes don’t mix well. The Rebellion doesn’t need Jyn after Jedha, and Jyn doesn’t want any part in the Rebellion. And then there’s that whole issue of him being on a mission to assassinate Jyn’s father, who may or may not be a rebel in his own right. Cassian is a good soldier; he follows orders without question. Right now his orders are to kill Galen Erso. But his instincts (and Jyn, and Bodhi, and Chirrut) tell him that his orders are wrong. His interests are divided, his thoughts conflicted, and thus he becomes more and more frustrated. On Edu, he lashes out at everyone around him. But he’s not mad at them- he’s mad at himself for questioning the Rebellion, and he’s mad at the Rebellion for asking so much of him.

What he does about it:

He doesn’t take the shot, obviously. And it’s easy to say, “He didn’t kill Galen because he cares about Jyn” or “He couldn’t pull the trigger because it didn’t feel right”. Both statements would be true. But there’s so much more to it than that. By choosing not to shoot Galen, Cassian finally admits that the Rebellion doesn’t necessarily dictate right and wrong in the Galaxy. He finally allows himself to see the flaws in his “the Rebel cause is always good and perfect” ideology. Finally, for the first time, he goes against direct orders and does what he wants, because he knows it’s the right thing to do. That’s why he looks so distressed on that ridge: he’s just busted through a huge barrier in his subconscious. And you know what? It feels like crap.

What changes:

At first, it seems like nothing is different. Even without his help, the mission is completed. Galen still ends up dead. Jyn still ends up angry with him. And when they fight, he defends himself, although every one of Jyn’s accusations are true. Even (dare I say especially) her Stormtrooper comment. In this one line, she has him pegged. Cassian refuses to admit it right away, but he is very much aware and ashamed of this fact. He is also aware that the Rebellion will never green-light a mission to Scarif with the evidence they currently possess. Thus, he finds himself at a fork in his road: Does he continue submitting to the Alliance, to his commanding officers, to his cause, even if their next decision will be the wrong one? Or does he follow Jyn into what he knows, in his heart, will be the best hope for the Galaxy? Thank the writers, he chose the latter.

What comes next:

I see a lot of posts talking about the times Cassian came back to Jyn. But what a lot of people (including myself) fail to notice right away is the most important time- the time he stands in front of her and so many others and says, “I believe you.” All the other times are vital (life-saving, in fact), but this time, it’s different. He isn’t acting on instinct; he isn’t rescuing her; he isn’t making excuses. He is making a conscious, life-altering choice to break free from the Rebellion, from the only life he’s ever known, and take up her cause. Finally, he frees himself from his prison and does what he wants. And the irony is that siding with Jyn is not just the right choice, but the practical and loyal one, as well.

Content. Yes, yes, I know there’s more going on than that. There’s also sorrow and regret and fear and pain and longing. But Cassian Jeron Andor, the Good Soldier, the Selfless Spy, the Rebel Captain, must’ve imagined he’d die at the hands of the Empire. And he likely begged the Universe more than once to let his death be quick, and let it mean something. Well, folks, now, on the beach of Scarif, it’s his time to go. He knows these are his last moments. He knows, too, that he’s done more for the Rebellion on this day than he had in the 20 years previous. He knows he’s completed his mission; he knows he’s given Jyn what she needed; he knows he’s made the right choice, and that it was his choice alone. He knows he’s dying for the cause he lived for. And above all that, he knows he isn’t dying alone.

It’s probably not the end he’d asked for; it’s more.

Tw: Religion (Christianity)

My dear lgbt+ kids,

My statement “not every person with a vagina is a woman” in an earlier letter attracted some mean comments that ranged from uneducated to disgustingly hateful to completely ridiculous.

One comment was “If God gave you a vagina, He made you a woman” and i’d like to address that because those of you who are religious may worry about that.

In fact, there’s no part in the bible where God says “If you have a vagina, you’re a woman.” God gave you a vagina, God gave you a body - but it’s humans who decided to gender that body based on whether it has a vagina or not. That’s why the whole “God makes no mistake” rhetoric is weak: It were human doctors who looked at your small body after birth and decided to slap a binary label on it. They made a mistake.

What does the bible say instead? “There is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” ( Galatians 3:28 (NIV)).

Not to forget, one of the most famous bible quotes (and according to Jesus, one of the two single most important commands in the bible!):

 “Love your neighbor. (Leviticus 19:18)”.

The bible doesn’t say “Love your neighbor* (*does not apply if they’re trans)” or “Love your neighbor (but check what’s in their pants first)”.

Jesus would not waste time adding hateful comments on lgbt+-positivity posts.

Prompts for Langst(?)

•Lance doing crazy stunts to get people’s attention since they mostly ignore him and greatly damages himself in the process

•He’s ADHD so he has a hard time trying to focus on Allura or Shiro giving orders and every time they get mad at him for it and one time he just snaps and tells them he has ADHD and they feel guilty about how they treated him

•Lance is super good at makeup and hair and other beauty stuff. He tries to help people with their problems (like bed hair, helmet hair, dry skin, blemishes, etc.) and they get mad saying that he’s just a guy and doesn’t know about that stuff. But they slowly realize how on point his makeup and hair is no matter what and get jealous and can’t work up the courage to ask him about it because of how they reacted earlier.

•He has a hard time studying by reading or writing but hearing it out loud he can’t instantly memorize it. But he’s too shy to ask anyone to help him study their plans and during the middle of the mission he tells the team he just can’t get it without hearing it (they’re like under attack or something and stress makes him confess)

•Lance, Keith, and Shiro are dating (Shklance) and Lance just cant feel like he belongs. He starts pulling away and Keith and Shiro don’t notice until a bit too late when Lance starts sleeping in his own room and shying/flinching away from their touches, afraid of their treatment again.

•Lance and Keith are dating and sometimes bicker but one day it turns out into an almost real fight and Keith goes to push him( they were training before they were fighting and they’re in the training room) and as he does Lance just stumbles back. He bites back with angry words and Says something bad (dunno what) and Keith just swings at him. He stops immediately as he sees Lance flinch inwardly, eyes shutting and body stiffening, like he’s used to being hit.
