yeah, i’m with you on this one. while it is the easiest way for one person to show their dedication to another - i mean, what says commitment more than bonding yourself to someone in a legally binding and hideously expensive ceremony? - i do have a lot of issues with it. the forced religious overtones are worth mentioning, as well as the inherent heterosexism, the grossly outdated tradition of arranged marriage, and the way in which it’s become such an ingrained cultural staple that announcing you have no intention of marrying is taken as a personal affront. even if i did intend to spend the rest of my life with someone, i don’t think i’d want to spend a vast amount of time and money to prove to everyone that i loved them. it should just go without saying.
