what books should you read this summer

tangible silence - a nonlinear misadventure series surrounding deaf!eddie kaspbrak

Eddie Kaspbrak is fourteen years old, lives in the tiny town of Derry, has asthma along with a million other ailments, and attends bird watching club meetings every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoon where he never actually watches birds.

Oh yeah, he also can’t fucking hear.

chapter 1.

Remember, your teacher has a landline if something happens. Did you take your allergy medicine? And sunscreen?

Yes mommy. I have to go I don’t want to be late.

Eddie stepped out of the car and breathed out in relief when he felt the gust of his mother driving away without protest; every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for the entire summer, he’ll have a blissful two hours away from his mom.

My uncle got me a $50 gift card to Barnes and Noble for Christmas, so I stopped by the store today after visiting my dad in the hospital. Apparently they’re expensive, and I can buy any of the books I wanted off of Amazon for cheaper. But the Marvel comics were buy 2 get 1 free, so I figured it was a good time to start reading comics.

I got SpiderGwen because I’ve been wanting to see what that’s like ever since I noticed her popping up on Tumblr. Then I got some Spider-Man/Deadpool comics because I love spideypool. And they had the Spider-Man figurine that I’ve been eyeing on Hot Topic’s website! It felt like fate, so of course I got that too.

I spent the whole gift card, but it was totally worth it :D

Crime and Punishment (1866) by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

“The darker the night, the brighter the stars
The deeper the grief, the closer is God!”
(Чем ночь темней, тем ярче звезды
Чем глубже скорбь, тем ближе Бог)

тут обратите внимание на конструкцию the (+adjective) … the (+adjective)… - чем… тем…

"You never reach any truth without making fourteen mistakes and very likely a hundred and fourteen.“
(Ни до одной правды не добирались, не соврав наперед раз четырнадцать, а может, и сто четырнадцать)

Мне одной показалось интересным, как “соврать” было переведено на английский. как “mistake”?

“Taking a new step, uttering a new word, is what people fear most.”
Нового шага, нового собственного слова они [люди] всего больше боятся..

to utter: произнести, выговорить

“It takes something more than intelligence to act intelligently.”
(Чтобы умно поступать, одного ума мало)

it takes more than…  to…. : нужно больше, чем… чтобы… (… мало, чтобы…)

Anna Karenina (1877) by Leo Tolstoy

“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”
(Все счастливые семьи похожи друг на друга, каждая несчастливая семья несчастлива по-своему )

The Gulag Archipelago (1973) by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

"Live with a steady superiority over life - don’t be afraid of misfortune, and do not yearn for happiness; it is, after all, all the same: the bitter doesn’t last forever, and the sweet never fills the cup to overflowing.”
(Живите с ровным превосходством над жизнью – не пугайтесь беды и не томитесь по счастью. Все равно ведь и горького не до веку и сладкого не дополна).

superiority: превосходство
misfortune: беда
to yearn for something: томиться, сильно чего-то хотеть.

The Master and Margarita (1967) by Mikhail Bulgakov

“You should never ask anyone for anything. Never - and especially from those who are more powerful than yourself.”
(Никогда и ничего не просите! Никогда и ничего, и в особенности у тех, кто сильнее вас).

“And now tell me, why is it that you use me words “good people” all the time? Do you call everyone that, or what?
- Everyone, - the prisoner replied. - There are no evil people in the world.

(- А теперь скажи мне, что это ты все время употребляешь слова добрые
люди"? Ты всех, что ли, так называешь?
- Всех, - ответил арестант, - злых людей нет на свете.)”

I imagine Kaneki being very enthusiastic after making love for the first time. It feels really good and he’s like omg omg, so this is what it feels like… wow. And he’s very innocent and curious about it? after so many negative emotions in his life, this one seems to be one of the most positive, and Touka is like trying to catch her breath like holy shit, that was… wow, and Kaneki is like rambling about it

“woow that was really cool Touka-chan, I’ve once read in a book that bla bla bla bla, d-did i hurt you? I was s-scared that maybe I hurt you, it felt so weird, wow, and it was kinda fast too… but-”

“This is what I want to do every day for the rest of my life.. wow, I-I really wanna do it again, do you think we should do it again? because-”

“Kaneki wtf, calm down…”

anonymous asked:

ummmmmM?! What was that Hades and persephone quote from? I have to read that book!

You mean this quote? http://thirdchildart.tumblr.com/post/162540873274/wary-hades-knew-he-should-regret-this-day-of

It’s from the Hades an Persephone picture book I’m kickstarting in September!  I did a bunch artwork for the story as part of Inktober 2015.  I’m inking new pieces this summer and writing my own adaptation of the myth to tie them all together.  I will tag all my in-progress posts with #hnpkickstarter if you want to follow!

Here’s my FAVORITE of the 2015 pieces!

To anyone and everyone who wants more diversity in their YA summer reading:

You should 100% read Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel by Sara Farizan

-Persian lesbian main character whose voice is absolutely wonderful and charming and achingly real. If you don’t love Leila, you don’t love yourself, tbh.

-other notable lady characters include, but are not limited to: a vampire techie, a gorgeous Jewish athlete who’s having a hard time coping with the loss of her brother, a hot hot literature teacher, and, of course, a mysterious transfer student from Switzerland

-(the dude characters are pretty cool too: a WASPy gay drama queen, a laid-back black dude who loves zombie movies, a loud seventh-grader, and a conservative Persian dad who is distressed about how much hip hop is about butts)

-hilarious lines such as: “I try to keep my mind busy through the silence. Is there chocolate-flavored gum yet? Did I remember to clear my browser history of lesbian folk music sites? I’ve been learning a lot about Ani DiFranco. I don’t even like folk music, but I guess I’d better see what all the fuss is about if I am to join my people.”

-it’s very engaging and not too long: I knocked it off in an afternoon because I couldn’t put it down

-(seriously though I teared up a time or two which isn’t actually that big a deal because I cry over everything but still it’s really good and you should read it)

Hello there! For the fifth day of my back to school marathon (and also the day I start school rip), I have another advice post for you, and it is about how to mentally prepare yourself for this school year! School can be overwhelming and stressful when the time comes, so it is significant that you should prepare your brain for another year of suffering studying!

Take care of your health: I must have to put 3 stars on this tip because yourself is most important. Make sure that you are taking care of all aspects of your health. Simple things like sleeping early, eating nutritious foods + hydrating (yes physical health correlates with mental health!), release positive vibes, and do little things that raise your happiness!

Organizing is key: It’s high time that you should start learning organization skills if you haven’t, but if you have, then you’re on the right track! Organizing allows you to be more efficient by saving time and space. Simply arrange similar items in a designated space. Also, make sure you maintain your orderliness by putting things back where they belong.

(Re)familiarize: Your mind has probably gained some rust over the summer, so it’s good to put it back in good shape by re-familiarizing yourself in studying, such as writing notes and reading books, or probably practicing math concepts. You should also familiarize yourself of what’s yet to come in the subjects you’re taking this year to get the feel of them before school begins, which saves you time.

Know the expectations: Of course, it’s always nice to imagine that everything will turn out fine. HOWEVER, you got to recognize the expectations. Otherwise, you’d fall on your face, but with more pain. Know what the class is expecting of the student; if you have to work harder, finish assignments on time, or whatever it is. This is part of great preparation.

Improve the past: It’s very useful to reflect on the previous school year about all the good and bad things that occurred. Make sure you’re continuing the positives while taking the negatives as a challenge for this year. Believe in yourself! You got this!~

Relax~: Eject all the negative feelings like stress and anxiety, because they are only going to slur your mind. Instead, take a deep breath, and exhale because you’re going to be doing fine, as long as you put your heart and mind into your goals~

Hopefully these tips help you in some form or another. Good thing I finished this post before I head to school. Wishing myself and you all the best of luck for school! Have a splendid day!~

The Gorgeous Stranger

Imagine: You, Y/N Lodge, met the gorgeous stranger, Jughead Jones, he was dark and mysterious and  you met at pop’s. Was this going to be more than a friendship?

You, your sister and your mother just moved from New York to a small town called Riverdale, apparently your mother lived here a couple of years ago. You decide that you want to walk around and explore the small town. You tell your mother that you’ll find a place to eat and the you’ll come back later but not to late since it’s school tomorrow. ’Yay! I’m so excited… Or nah’ you think to yourself. You say your ’goodbyes’ and ’see you later’s’ to your mom and sister and finally you walk out of the building and onto the unfamiliar street, you decide to walk along the street to see where it leads you. After walking for forty-five minutes you get hungry and you see a place a little further down on the street, so you keep on walking until you stand outside the diner named ’Pop’s’.

You walk inside and the bell that signals someone walked inside rings, you walk over to a booth in the back where there’s a smaller chance that anyone will see you. You don’t like attention and especially not right now with everything going on with your father. Your sister, Veronica, on the other hand quite enjoys the attention she get when she walks into a room, you and your sister are quite different but you still love each other to death. She’s the more fashionable one and you’re more dark and you will always choose ripped jeans over dresses everyday but that doesn’t mean you can’t dress up.

You’re interrupted from your thoughts when a waitress walks over. ”Hey, can I take your order?” She asks politely and you nod. ”Yeah, uhh, I’ll have a vanilla milkshake and some fries.” ”Coming right up.” The waitress say and walks to the kitchen with your order. While you’re waiting for your food a  boy come over but you don’t think much about 9t until he coughs. ”Uhh, can I sit here?” He asks and you can tell that he isn’t a people person but you nod anyways. ”Yeah, sure.” You say and gesture for him to take the seat opposite of you. The boy, whose name you still don’t know, are wearing a grey beanie, black ripped jeans and a grey hoodie under his black jacket with a laptop bag. He opens his bag and place his laptop on the table and start to type away. A few seconds later the waitress arrives with your food. ”Thanks.” You thank her with a kind smile, she smiles back at you and then looks towards the boy. ”Would you like anything?” She asks sweetly but he declines.

You eat your food quietly until you can’t hold yourself from asking. ”So, what are you writing?” You ask the strange boy. He stops typing and look up from his laptop to you. ”I’m writing a book about the town and the disappearance of Jason Blossom.” He answer. ”The disappearance of who?” You ask curiously, and with that the strange boy surprises himself and tell you the story about Jason Blossom and how he disappeared this summer. The story intrigues you and you find yourself listening to every word. ”It sounds interesting, you should let me read that sometime:” You say and he shrugs in response. After that conversation the two of you keep talking and you get to know one another, you learn that his name is Jughead Jones The Third. The two of you quickly became friends.

What are you doing this summer to prepare for the next school year?

Summer is definitely a great time to finally chill and take a break. But even though things have slowed down, you should still be working to accomplish goals and prepare for the next steps.

Here’s some ideas:

1. Read books that you didn’t have time to read while you were in coursework.

2. Update your resume to reflect everything you did in the school year.

3. Find a summer internship/ job.

4. Apply for scholarships.

5. Do a paid summer fellowship such as a research fellowship with a faculty member.

6. Practice a new language.

7. Take a relevant summer class to get ahead.

8. Start thinking about what you want to do post-high school/ college. For fun, find any relevant job postings and pretend you’re applying!

9. Spend time with friends who motivate you and are also being productive this summer.

10. Have fun! Catch up on sleep, Netflix, and your social life and be refreshed and ready to start the school year strong!

My Best Friends’ Summer TBR

I have a pretty great group of best friends who all love to read and their TBR lists are extensive–for this post, I’m going to do three books per person. They are all fellow bloggers on here and some of you might follow them (or might want to follow them). We also each have given each other nicknames from The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. I will refer to my friends by their nicknames.

This is going to be a semi-long post.

This list is also for those of you who have been wondering what they should read during these next few hot (or cold) months. If you have any recommendations that you think my friends will like, then let me know! I will also include my three-book summer TBR at the end of this post!

Happy reading!

I hope this helps anyone looking for summer reads!

Happy reading!

anonymous asked:

Hi Emma! I would love to know what you enjoy to read, not only genre wise but also what you favourite books are or what you are currently reading. Any recommendations? I'm searching for good summer break reads atm. :)

Hi! I hope you wanted in depth, cause I went in depth. I’m going to go ahead and list some of my favorite genres and then some of my favorite authors/books in those genres and I think that should cover everything. I’ll name the books I recommend/am currently reading. So, in no particular order:

  • Mystery
    • Probably my favorite genre
    • Agatha Christie - if she wrote it then I’ve either already read it or will read it before I die. I’d recommend pretty much everything by her, but especially the Poirot novels and stories. The Mysterious Affair at Styles is the first Poirot novel and one of my favorites.
    • Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
    • Dorothy Sayers
    • Robert Galbraith (pen name of JK Rowling, her mystery series is actually quite good!)
    • Alan Bradley
    • Harlan Coben
    • Jacqueline Winspear
    • PD James - Death Comes to Pemberley is especially great if you also love Jane Austen!
    • Overall I’m a big fan of the English mystery, tea cozy or otherwise
    • Bonus suggestion from my Mom: Elizabeth George
  • Fantasy
    • Neil Gaiman
    • Terry Pratchett
    • Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett - Good Omens is one of my all time favorites, highly recommend
    • Salman Rushdie - I’m still in the process of reading The Satanic Verses, it’s amazing but not exactly a light summer read
    • Christopher Moore - love him. love, love, love him. I’ve read my copy of Fool so many times it’s falling apart. Love him.
    • J.K. Rowling - obviously
    • J.R.R. Tolkien
    • Tamora Pierce - Trickster’s Queen is one of my very favorites, I love the combination of fantasy and political intrigue. I also really appreciate the diversity in her novels, fantasy can be a very white/chosen one genre sometimes
    • Erin Morgenstern - The Night Circus. Read it, you won’t regret it.
    • Jasper Fforde - start with The Eyre Affair, you’ll be hooked
    • I tend towards more adult fantasy, but a YA novel once in a while is always good.
  • General Fiction
    • P.G. Wodehouse - top five favorite authors easily. He makes the list every time (along with Christie). Joy In The Morning is him in top form and if I was forced to pick a favorite book it would be this one. I can’t tell you how many times this book has cheered me up when I really needed it, it never gets old for me.
    • Haruki Murakami - I’m finishing up The Strange Library and am reading Kafka by the Shore next. This man is brilliant.
    • Jonathan Tropper - This is Where I Leave You has a spot on my favorites shelf.
    • Jane Austen - self-explanatory
    • Charlotte Bronte - I just really love Jane Eyre
    • Honestly, there are so, so many more authors that are in this category, but if I don’t cut myself off I’m gonna go on forever.
  • Non-Fiction
    • Christopher Hitchens
    • John Meacham
    • David Sedaris
    • James W. Loewen - Lies My Teacher Told Me will make you hate high school history curriculum.
    • J.K. Rowling - included here for Very Good Lives, which is a graduation speech in book form. I have parts of it memorized.

I hope some of these are new and good suggestions to you! It’s a fraction of the books and authors I love, but I went with mostly what was on my favorites shelf for today. For summer reading I would especially recommend Joy in the Morning, This is Where I Leave You, The Mysterious Affair at Styles and The Eyre Affair

Could you do 37 with Scott summers and a really shy reader

“Hey [Y/N]”.
You were just sitting alone at the lunch table reading by yourself now out of nowhere for no particular reason you were surrounded by a group of girls, a group of girls who obviously didn’t have good intentions.

“Want to come hang out with us?” Another girl asked making her friends behind her snicker.

“No I’m good” you replied trying not to look any of them in the eye. You were shy, you didn’t much like interaction with people you weren’t completely comfortable with. You’d run if you could but at the moment you were trapped.

“What are you reading?” The first girl said taking your book out of your hands.
“Twilight maybe?”.

“No just give it back” you said attempting to take your property back but they weren’t going to leave you alone that easily.

“No I don’t think I want to”.

“Well I think you should” you all looked to see Scott Summers standing there, with his arms crossed. You knew who Scott was but you’ve never spoken to each other so it was a big mystery to why he was helping you right now.

“Oh come on-”.

“Just give it back and go”.

The girl rolled her eyes, slammed your book on to the table, then her and her friends all disappeared without putting up much of a fight. You quickly took your book and hugged it close to your chest, scared that you may lose it again.

“You didn’t have to do that” you said quietly.

“It’s fine I wanted to” Scott said shooting you a grin “[Y/N] right?”.

“I’m Scott”.

“I know. Thanks Scott”.

“No problem”.

Five Tails

(Read on ao3)

Harry smirked when he walked up behind Draco in the Great Hall during the Welcoming Feast and let a small piece of paper fall into his lap. Only Draco would be able to read the real message on it so it didn’t matter who saw it. Draco showed a small quirk of his lips, too little for anyone but Harry to see.

With a smile of his own Harry left the Great Hall and climbed up all the stairs to the seventh floor where the Room of Requirement was located.

When he entered it the room had transformed into the cosy library/living room he had spent endless hours in with Draco in the last two years. Draco joined him fifteen minutes later and flung himself on top of Harry who was already lounging on the couch.

“I missed you,” he breathed and dove down to kiss Harry.

“I know,” Harry panted between kisses. “I missed you too.”

“What was it that you wanted to talk to me about then?” Draco asked once their immediate to feel and kiss the other had been stilled. “You said it was urgent.”

“Yeah… well… I don’t really know how to tell you…”

“Take your time then… figure it out. You know you can tell me everything, right?” Draco smiled and dragged his hands through Harry’s hair in soothing motions.

“Of course I know that. That’s why we’re here. I wanted you to know first.”

“I feel honoured.”

After a few more minutes of silence in which Draco lazily petted Harry’s unruly hair, Harry finally found enough courage to tell him. What was the worst that could happen, anyway? Okay, Draco could break up with him but Harry just hoped it wouldn’t happen. Draco had taken everything he had told him so far very well. Even when Harry admitted to having snuck into the Slytherin common room while polyjuiced, Draco just laughed about the idea of being Slytherin’s heir.

“You know that part of my family is from India of course,” Harry stated as an introduction.

Draco raised an eyebrow. “No shit, Sherlock. I was only the one who helped you figure that out.”

“Yes, well…” Harry hesitated. Now it was all or nothing. “It seems that some of my ancestors are from Japan as well.”

“From Japan? That’s unexpected. How did you find out?”

“They dumped an interesting creature inheritance on me. It got activated on my eighteenth birthday.”

Draco started laughing but stopped again instantly when he saw Harry’s serious expression.

“You’re not joking?” he asked a little hesitant.

“No, I’m serious. I’m part Kitsune.”

“Kitsune as in fox demon? That’s amazing.”

“You think so?” Harry asked still a little cautious.

“I do. I’m sure you’d look very cute as a fox.”

“Well, I can’t really transform into a fox,” Harry explained. “I just have fox ears and five tails.”

“Would you show me?”

Harry thought about it for a second but this was a rather easy decision. If Draco liked the idea of him having fox ears and tails he probably wouldn’t be grossed out when he actually saw them, right?

“Sure. Get off me then. I don’t want to lie on them, it’s uncomfortable.”

Series← Previous Work Part 2 of the JayTim Week: Summer Edition 2017 series

Summary: Jay thinks getting a job at the local library will be the perfect way to spend his summer and make a little money while he’s at it. The problem is there’s a really cute boy that comes in all the time and Jay has no idea how to act when he’s around. Talking with cute boys definitely isn’t in his repertoire and flirting is completely out of the question!

With a pained groan, Jason let the last donation box drop onto the table to give his aching arms sweet relief. Several people looked up at the sudden thud-some sending him dirty looks-but Jason was well beyond caring. His first day working at Gotham Public Library hadn’t gone at all like he expected it to when he imagined his first day. At the interview, they had described what he would be doing and not once had they mentioned lugging around heavy donation boxes all day. The head librarian took one look at him, saw how muscular he was (Jason’s pretty sure he saw her eyes literally light up), and put him right to work. Now, he was completely exhausted and ready to go home for the day.

I’ve been working on writing the content for my lil summer camp mini story. I want to get a decent chunk written before I start posting, so I can batch take the photos, and just make a good queue. I am seriously having a lot of fun writing in this new style, and writing such new characters, and also putting Violet in new scenarios.

Tbh, writing novel style has never made me more self-conscious about my writing hahahaha. But, yknow what, oh well. How else will you get better? Maybe I should read more books, that would probably help, lol. But OH WELL, I say!

Anyways, hopefully I can get some posts queued this weekend :)
