Let me start this with this isn’t a hostile post. I’m gonna try to be as refined, eloquent and inspiring as possible.
I LOVE mermaids. I think they are ethereal, immortal muses that still inspire to this day. Every culture, every corner of this planet has mermaid lore. It’s astonishing.
Today I was scrolling through Tumblr and saw a post that was basically like, ‘fishy mermaids are dumb and make no sense. Mermaids should only be based on aquatic mammals like whales/dolphins/manatees. It just makes more sense.’
No. NO. This bothered me on many levels. I am a mythology/folklore enthusiast. I am an artist. I am a believer.
I believe that mermaids are symbolic. I believe mermaids are subjective. I am a very logical thinker and, yes, I agree that if mermaids were to be real, non-magical creatures that they would probably be aquatic mammalian in appearance; streamlined, hairless, blubber. It makes sense.
Mermaids don’t have to make sense. They can be whatever you want. I, personally, like taking the definition of what a mermaid is a little literally because that’s what inspires me: An ethereal creature. Beautiful woman with a fish tail instead of legs. But that’s me. That’s my interpretation.
Mermaids can be monstrous and malicious! They can be small like goldfish or as big as whales! Create in your lore what inspires you!
The point I’m making is that this post was essentially saying their way was the only way to think of mermaids, and I cannot get down with that. Don’t tell someone how to dream. There’s a vast ocean full of inspiration out there. Don’t limit anyone’s imagination.
3:00 a.m. rant over. Thanks. Goodnight. 🐟🐚🐠
