what a beautiful day it was to rewatch my favourite parts

Let’s Talk About That Sensational Show, Shall We?

It is not without bitterness that I wish to talk about the second season of Sense8 and about the show in general.

As we all know, Netflix announced a few days ago that the show would not be back for a third season, as of now without explanation.

When I watched the first season, it took me until episode three to actually get into the story and wanting to understand it better. And then of course the end of episode four happened, and I fell in love and finished the first season in a couple of sleepless nights.

I was so excited when it was announced that we would get a 2016 Christmas special, to help make the waiting more bearable. I will admit that after watching it for the first time, I felt unsatisfied, I expected more, because even though it was a two-hour special, it did not move the story forward – in fact, it felt like two hours of stagnation without proper development, despite of course a wonderful directing and soundtrack. Nevertheless, I was still happy because we got some new Sense8.

When the second season got released exactly one month ago on Netflix, I dedicated two days to watching the episodes and I was not disappointed at all.

I thought Lana Wachowski did a tremendous job, especially when knowing that her sister Lilly withdrew from the project and she had to manage practically everything on her own. I cannot pick one or even two favourite episodes simply because each one contains significant and epic lines, scenes or shots. I, however picked a few favourite scenes, which are the following:
- As the Christmas special is part of the second season, I picked the Birthday Party simply because we were, once again, shown how powerful the bond of the Sensates is, and that even though they are eight individuals, they are also “a we” and “one”.
- All of the fighting scenes involving Sun, particularly the ones when she – and subsequently the whole cluster almost died from hanging. It felt so intense I think I stopped breathing with them. I also loved the cemetery scene when she was challenging Detective Mun. They are Ying and Yang, Sun and Moon, and it is beautiful to see Sun finally being challenged and admired by a man for who she is, knowing how badly she suffered from misogynist behaviours in her corporate life.

- The montage of Wolfgang visiting the cluster to “ask for help” his own way before meeting with Lila Facchini, a Sensate from Italy who is somehow obsessed with him and will not leave him be. He is the least talkative of the cluster, and one thing I love is that they know each other so well that one does not need to voice their concerns in order to be understood, especially someone as manly as Wolfgang who would never expressly ask for help.
- The Protests montage between India/Kenya/Amanita being car chased in San Francisco. It was probably the second most tense-filled moment of the season when I actually wondered: “Is someone about to get hurt seriously?” I honestly thought something would happen to Amanita, but knowing how important she is and the value she brings to Nomi’s cluster, I knew this could not actually happen.
- Nomi’s father standing up in front of the FBI agent saying “Take your hands off my daughter”. Six words that made me tear up and still give me chills when rewatching the scene, simply because there are many transgendered, and more generally, LGBTQ people in the world, struggling to be accepted by those they love. It was empowering and truly a lesson of acceptance.

I could pick many and many others such as the moments involving our unstoppable epic trios Will-Sun-Wolfgang/Lito-Dani-Hernando, but those are the five moments that echoed the most.

As a hopeless romantic, I loved the significant development of Kala and Wolfgang’s relationship at the end of the season. I was worried when I saw that they kept them on the backburner with few scenes compared to the other romantic pairings, but then it slowly progressed, even though I got a little bored with Kala’s indecisiveness which, inevitably, would have hurt both of the men, had she not taken a decision (Pretending isn’t a life, right?).

I also loved the scenes between Will and Riley, clearly showing that the romantic bond is heightened when they are together physically. I definitely consider them the ‘parents’ of the cluster.

As Wolfgang and Kala were finally and officially together and ready for the next step, which was hopping on a plane and meeting in Paris (thank you Rajan for buying her an apartment in one of the most romantic cities in the world), Lila had other plans for Wolfie and sold him to Whispers, who had him captured and tortured by the Biologic Preservation Organisation. The season ended with the seven members of the cluster being finally together in the flesh in London, on a mission to save Wolfgang.

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room – Netflix officially announced that Sense8 would not be back for a third season. Although there has not been an official explanation, Brian J. Smith aka Will, implied that the show was too expensive to produce and the number of viewers was not enough to support such a big global production.

From a financial perspective, it is justified, from a moral one, not so much, especially knowing the huge impact it had on people globally. Among the eight characters there is at least one you can identify with. Not only that, but cancelling it when it ended on a big cliffhanger, but also while being introduced to other members of clusters around the world calls for at least a big movie to conclude, if not a full season to explore the story of Homo Sensoriums deeper. Besides, now that the members of our favourite cluster are all together in London, the filming location could be reduced to Europe.

I consider Sense8 more than a simple show. Besides being ambitious, diverse and inclusive, it is bold, it touches upon subjects that might be uncomfortable to talk about, but still are important to discuss. It also brings many stereotypes to light, and uses those to twist them and turn them into something we would not have expected but works so well. In the current tense political and societal landscapes, it is important to remind people that diversity is what makes us rich from the inside.

Could Sense8 be the first show saved by Netflix?

While waiting for an official explanation, there is a widely spread petition which has been signed by +400,000 fans from across the world, and it has been launched less than a week ago so it is not crazy to believe it could reach half a million by the end of the week.
In the meantime, you can still stream the 23 episodes of Sense8, and if you are not watching it yet, maybe this will help you decide.

Awkward encounters - Davin x reader (The Stag)

AN: I came up with this cute little idea after rewatching the stag last weekend. Here you go :) I’m not tagging anyone from my forever tag list as I’m unsure who’s actually seen this movie.

Summary: You’re one of Davin’s students and you stumble upon them in the woods.

Word count: 1,150

Warnings: Strong language, teacher/student relationship?, spoilers I guess.

It was meant to be an early morning walk, clear your head, walk your sister’s dog. You didn’t expect to find your english lecturer butt naked with five other men in the middle of the Irish country side.

You always had a crush on your english lecturer, he was young, fairly (and by fairly, you meant really) good looking and the way he spoke just transfixed you. He was your favourite part of the day although you’d never admit that.

The past couple lectures you had noticed that he had a couple friends coming to visit him, including a very beautiful woman which almost made you jealous. That is until you found out through the grape vine that the woman was actually his best friend’s fiancé.

Not that any of this mattered though because he was your teacher and he barely knew who you were.

Back to the forest.

You wouldn’t normally track this far but you had to house sit for your sister this weekend and you had to walk her small dog everyday.

A Thomas Sanders Appreciation Post

AKA Thomas is amazing and I love the Sanders Sides

Can we all just acknowledge that Thomas is an amazing human being? (I’m sure most people do anyway) The courage it takes to share something so deeply personal, and deliver it in such a beautiful and well crafted way, I just… I am blown away. I did not expect to cry, but I found myself with tears in my eyes. Some of the dialogue, the expressions, the editing, it just got me. It was something I could relate to so well and I really hope it’s been a helpful coping mechanism for Thomas and that he’s doing good, because honestly he deserves it. What a phenomenal person.

This man, right here, is amazing. And I’m so glad he’s got such good friends and family around him, and that there are millions of people all over who feel the same way I do.

And I’d also like to add, the man can act??? As in, I 100% believe in the Sides as characters? Every time I see them on screen I can very easily distinguish them as their own personalities. For example, I see Patton and I don’t think ‘Oh wow, Thomas is playing Patton he’s so cute’, I am invested in Patton. To make a character seem like a totally different person to yourself, especially when the whole premise is that he is part of you and obviously they all look like you, is a real skill.

None of that last paragraph made any sense, let’s move on.

I loved Roman and Virgil’s loss of control. It was obviously due to Patton trying to hide his feelings behind a curtain of happiness, but I love how Roman was just over the top fanciful to compensate for heartbreak, and Virgil was reverting into his “corrupted” voice. So good. The editing and acting was brilliant.

HANG UP

DESTINY HAS DIALLED BACK

GET RID OF IT, GET RID OF THE PHONE NOW.

Ugh, sooooo good! Some of my favourite moments in this video were of Virgil or Roman just being over the top because of Patton’s room.

Also, this exchange between Roman and Patton:

Patton, cry out to him.

*he scream*

That’s just over 2 minutes in and I was in bits. The writing, the pacing of the story, the acting (again), the comedic timing, the editing… I could go on.

I’m going to go on.

This following scene is what really got me. This is when the tears started welling up and I had to pause the video to compose myself.

How you’re reacting, for however long, is completely normal. Not bad, not strange, not stupid. - Virgil Sanders.

This, man. This just got me. These two simple lines of dialogue hit me on such a personal level that I had to pause the video and walk away from it for a sec. And coming from Virgil, the source of anxiety, which is something I personally deal with? It got me. Well played, Sanders. Well played.

I’m sorry, I’m not trying to make it about me. Back to Thomas.

Can I also point out the changing photos in the frame in the background? I know everyone noticed it but I’d be a fool not to include it in this long post. The fact that it is a different picture every time it cuts back to Thomas’ shot must have taken days to edit (or probably hours, because Joan and Talyn are amazing). Regardless, it took a long time, and I would like to praise the blessings, nay, the divine miracles that are Joan and Talyn. I’m sure Thomas did loads of editing for this too but those two are honestly sent from some godlike dimension or something. The work they put in… *mind blown*

I’m also really glad that when Thomas came to his ‘resolution’ for the video, they were in the photo in the background. Little details like that make me happy.

Can we also talk about this?

Is this appealing to you, at all?

Logan, is that a… cat hoodie?

I thought this might be less cumbersome, while still catering to your… eccentric standards.

You got me a gift?!

THE LOGICALITY SHIP IS BACK ON COURSE, GUYS GALS AND NON-BINARY PALS!!

Ok, but seriously, Thomas, you are amazing. You will probably never see this post because oh my gawd, it is long and I am no-one. But I’m proud of everyone who managed to get all the way through it to make it to this point. Thomas is an amazing actor. The editing, especially in the closing montage (which is where the tears finally fell, btw) was phenomenal. I felt every second of it. I laughed, I cried, I rewatched it seven times and then another three times to make this post. I’m pretty sure this turned out to be even longer than my Virgil Appreciation Post, which was pretty darn long. But it was important to me to get this off my chest.

Thomas Sanders is amazing, and I appreciate him.

One last thing:

Virgil’s smile in the end card. I died.

Ok, now I’m done. I hope you’re having a great day. Sorry this post is long.

hi! i have become a huge fan of you in the past like day or so (i'm sure your activity page at this point looks like i'm stalking you) as all of your commentary is perfectly on point - i love moffat and i think he's done so much good for this show that it just drives me insane to see baseless commentary otherwise (especially when it's clear it's coming from people who don't even watch anymore). anyway you're doing the lord's work here and i thoroughly enjoy and appreciate it :)

Hi there!

Thank you so much! For the record, your blog is incredibly amazing also; I’m sure in the not-to-distant future your activity page will look just as obsessive as mine!

I love Steven Moffat so, so much too. The hilarious thing is that this wasn’t always the case. C.2013, I was definitively part of the Moffat Hate crowd! I was the first in line to reblog every “The Day of the Doctor hates New Who canon!”, and “Clara’s life revolves around The Doctor!”, and “River Song is a terrible, regressive female character!” post I could find. (Luckily my old old blog has long since been deleted!)

I think the thing to understand about Moffat Hate, (and i use that term accordingly. Legitimate critique of Moffat’s work is something I have no problem with, and something I partake in myself), is that it’s effectively a phenomenon. And one that can only ever have occured to a show like Doctor Who:

For people like myself, who sat down with their family as an eight year old kid to watch Rose as it first aired in 2005, Moffat’s takeover of the show coincided with adolescence, and therefore with our own blossoming social awareness and critical skills. By this point, Doctor Who had well and truly carved its place as a staple of British pop culture, and therefore as a staple of childhood influence. (I mean, I don’t know about in the US, but in the UK, you’d be hard pressed to find a primary school pupil across the country who wasn’t avidly discussing the cliffhanger at the end of The Stolen Earth the Monday after the episode aired! I can’t emphasise enough how utterly huge Doctor Who was as a child. It was literally all anyone talked about!)

The RTD era of show therefore has a real place in the hearts of many, and so, as is the way with nostalgia, we link it directly to our childhoods and romanticise it. Add to that a burgeoning social media platform built on synergetic hyperbole and herd mentality, (I mean gosh look at the “your fave is problematic” discourse, and how hard everyone here collectively turned from Superwholock Stans to agressively hating all three shows in the space of a few months), an unfortunately normal dose of self-critical cringe culture, (what we engage with and enjoy as tweens is automatically horribly uncool and terrible the older we get), and Moffat’s era never really stood a chance!

It was only upon doing a complete rewatch of the show after Matt Smith’s final episode, that I finally allowed myself to view these episodes out of personal context. With retrospect. And with Russell’s era, I discovered a goofy, passionate, indulgent melodrama that’s as clumsy and nonsensical as it is engaging and moving, while with Moffat’s era, I discovered a thematically rich, witty, macabre modern fairytale that’s as sumptuous and stylish as it is full of glorious glorious soul. They were both completely different to how I’d remembered them, both a bundle of triumphs with a few falters, and yet both standing on their own feet. It was only upon rewatch that I truly discovered, and appreciated, Moffat’s high-concept, darker, more visceral, and therefore more controversial, version of the show. It had guts! it holds a punch! Without negating the beauty of triumphant storytelling to do so! And it doesn’t half carry conceptual and thematic weight! River’s diary. Amy’s glasses. Clara’s leaf. Bill’s photos. Simple objects and items that Moffat pours entire universes into. There’s something so sweeping, so rich and so compelling about the imagery filled, picture-book way Moffat writes. He’s less a screenwriter, and more a storyteller. That’s the distinction I’d make, and the distinction that, in my mind, puts him head and shoulders above Russell T. (who is a tremendously brilliant writer himself, I might add).

This totally goes without mentioning Moffat’s ever-increasing embrace of social issues. There’s no way to view River’s story as anything other than a celebration of female freedom and female agency. There’s no way to view Clara’s story as anything other than a celebration of female defiance. And there’s no way to view Amy’s story as anything other than a celebration of female courage, of female kindness. Steven Moffat champions his characters, he champions his female characters, and there’s no getting away from that. He makes them suffer, because good drama depends on that, but they have always, always stood triumphant and proud at the end of it all. That’s a track record worth cherishing, I think.

All of this stands amongst an unbowed, unbent, unbroken, pro-female doctor agenda, and a current series which has given us shameless, open, positive, political commentary on the disgraces of historical whitewashing, on racism, on slavery, on capitalism, on colonialism, on indoctrination, on militarisation, on media bias, on fake news, on heteronormativity, on sexism and on the gender binary system. Oh, and the show’s first Black Lesbian Companion to boot. When it comes down to it, Steven Moffat really is pretty great!

Gosh, this turned into something really extensive and a little bit histrionic! But I’m so beyond passionate about this wonderful era of my favourite show, and, like you, I am so beyond frustrated by the constant mischaracterisations and misreadings, (in many instances, categorically and intentionally false ones, delivered by people who haven’t even watched the show since 2013), of the work and words of the man behind it all, that I think I deserve to be a tad extravegant!

Thanks so much again! xx

Mina’s Monday Recs

Wow, what a week! There has been so much loveliness coming out of the fandom creatively in the last seven days. And since I’ve become sick of adulting, I decided to this a bit earlier instead :) (Of course, this rec list is – as it always is – based on my shipping preferences, and lately, as will soon become obvious, I’ve been on a bit of a Nyssa kick. Not to mention I have needed smut like I need air, which is also reflected in my choices for this week.)

Do you Take This Man? (NSFW) by yespleasehawkeye (Olicity) – AHHHH. So much smutty goodness in this fic, seriously. One thing I can never get enough of is the physicality between Oliver and Felicity when they’re established – I just think that their interactions have a different kind of sensuality to them when they’re kind of familiar with each other physically. (Like when Oliver is just casually touching Felicity under the table while they’re eating, lol.) And, of course, the fact that it’s set during Thea and Roy’s wedding (two of my OTPs for the price of one! :D) just makes this even more enjoyable. I love the lazy feel to this fic, and the way they keep going back to the dance floor again and again. Definitely one I will be rereading. :)

Carpe Diem by agentsofmariahill (Nyssara and hints of Black Assassin) – whoa. I will preface this by saying that there really isn’t nearly enough femmeslash fic out there, and there is nowhere near enough Nyssa fic either. So the fact that this is both is a bonus, for me. I love the way the author explored the different facets of Nyssa’s character – the way her father trained her, the way she slowly started questioning her sexuality, her beautiful relationship with Sara and her budding friendship with Laurel. Even if you’ve never read a Nyssa-centric fic before, I urge you to check this one out. It’s amazing.

Tantric (NSFW) by lostolicityscenes (Olicity) – HOT DAMN. I am a sucker for road trip smut, and this was gorgeous. I love the poetic style and the way Oliver and Felicity kind of find each other, physically and mentally. I love that kind of discovery between them and how the physicality between them, while losing its novelty, never loses its thrill. And what gets me is that this fic doesn’t have a word of dialogue in it, but it doesn’t need to. In fact, the silence is kind of what makes this story so sexy. <3

It is not in the Stars (NSFW) by kaleidoscopes-and-carousels (Nyssara) – GIVE ME ALL THE NYSSARA SEXYTIMES PLEASE. Wow. What an amazing homage to one of my OTPs, set during the end of season 2 when Sara returns to Nyssa and asks for the League’s help. I think this fic sums up perfectly, for me, Sara’s mindset when she decided to break things off with Oliver – that this was never about not wanting to be with Nyssa and was far more about unwilling to face the darkness inside herself.

Strange Birds by darhkfelicity (Olicity with Laulicity friendship) – I will never, ever, ever get enough of the Laulicity friendship, and this fic is such a lovely homage to what has become one of my favourite ever girl-power!friendships on Arrow. I love how their early interactions in canon are addressed here, the way Sim dips into both my darlings’ minds and shows how they slowly become friends. And I adore the way this extends beyond the Olicity road trip while also working in details of some of the new spoilers we’ve been getting for season 4.

Sensations of Survival (NSFW) by arrow-through-my-writers-block (Olicity) – ahhh, I am such a sucker for smangst, and this is a wonderful one. Set the night that Oliver defeated Ra’s (I think?), it has some of my favourite things in it, including SHOWER SEX and apologies and pain and did I mention shower sex? :D There is something almost cathartic about reading this that I adore, and there is such a gorgeous introspective and quiet feel to it that is also ridiculously hot and something that I just can’t get enough of. Definitely my favourite by this author.

So, I found this waterfall by thevegantargaryen (Nyssara) – I love Nyssara fics that are set during the flashback years, and this is an excellent one. There is so much emotion and hotness packed into what is actually quite a short piece, but it doesn’t seem to be from how beautifully it is written. Both Nyssa and Sara talk about their dreams, about leaving, exploring the world, and the way that is inexplicably linked with their exploration of each other sinceriously tugs at my heartstrings and makes me ache for these two. <3

Wanderers by susannahmccormick (Olicity) – yayyyy, more road trip fic! :) Sus does such a great job with this series, and I am loving in particular the section about Oliver and Felicity’s mountain hike. AND THE PUPPIES. Oh God. I really like the domesticity about them – not only does it perfectly fit into what Stephen and Emily have been saying lately about how Oliver and Felicity have changed while on their road trip, but there is something so ridiculously endearing about Oliver thinking about holding a barbecue and wanting to do up the house and all sorts.

And then I found this delightful tag fic (picture is NSFW) by effie214 which kind of speculates on what Oliver and Felicity would be like their first night back in Starling. And as always, Effie’s way with words leaves me speechless, because I can totally feel Felicity’s conflicting emotions about being back, and about wanting to hold onto the comfortable oblivion of their road trip. And THE PANCAKES. I love it when Oliver cooks breakfast for Felicity. For obvious reasons. :D

I also came across this gorgeous Olicity graphic by waschal – I LOVE the angel wings on Oliver (I can’t help but interpret that to be a reference to the fact that the Arrow is Starling’s guardian angel <3) and the pretty colouring and the infinity sign around the arrow. I could probably write an essay about how much I love the symbolism of this, but I’ll stop there, lol.

Then there’s this beauty by captainolicitysbedroom, which was made for supersillyanddorky06’s fic, The Firebird (which I’ll admit I haven’t had a chance to read yet, but Matty is an excellent writer and I know, having read several of her other fics, that this one is as good as anything she writes). Plus, I love any art that feature’s Al-Saheem, because of reasons. ;)

I may have shrieked a little when I saw this lovely Laurel Lance graphic by blackprettybird, too. WOW. What a gorgeous homage to my pretty bird. I love the monochrome and the way the city is reflected – I think some people forget that when Oliver was off in Nanda Parbat, Laurel had to look after Starling on her own, with only Nyssa by her side. This is a wonderful reminder of that. <3

And my graphic rec list would be incomplete without this absolutely heartbreaking Nyssara edit by cherrychapssstick, which made me feel SO MANY EMOTIONS. I love the shattered glass effect and how it reflects the fragmented nature of Nyssa and Sara’s relationship. So dark and achingly beautiful. AH.

And then, because I love Black Assassin both platonically and romantically, here are a couple of lovely videos that are dedicated to the wonderful pairing that is Laurel and Nyssa. There’s this one by wondertwinc, which goes ever so slightly AU in that they’re actually together. And wow, do they have great chemistry! I will forever love the milkshake scene, and the scene in 3x16 where Laurel agrees to let Nyssa train her, and the part where Nyssa said the last few weeks with Laurel had brought her happiness. Nothing makes me happier than two badass ladies supporting the hell out of each other, saving each other and having a beautiful friendship (and, in this video, something more). This video is certainly one I will rewatch. Again and again.

The second video is by vigilantelawyers, which I also adore and which made me fall in love with the pairing even more. What an apt song choice, and with a lovely selection of clips from the show, too. I think we see here how Nyssa has mentored Laurel in training her, but also how protective Laurel is of Nyssa – to the point that she says she doesn’t want to lose her after everyone else she’s lost. Also, I don’t know if there’s a technical name for this, but I love how at one point there is two of Nyssa and then later there is two of Laurel. It looks super cool and just makes this video even more gorgeous. :D

That’s it from me! I know this week has been Nyssa-heavy, but hey, she’s a cool character and I love her to pieces. You know the drill – if you liked anything on this list, be sure to let the creators of these wonderful fanworks know. Reblog their work. Give kudos. Leave comments. Leave a lovely message in their askbox telling them how much their fic/edit/video made your day.

In other words, spread positivity so all the hardworking people who give so much to the fandom get something back. Thanks, and see you next week! :)

(And graphic artists, I’ve linked to your works, but if you want me to take down the actual images, I am happy to do so. Just shoot me an ask. :))

#BigRonFilmReviews Top 100 Movies of all time

10-1

I’m finally there.

This was hard work. I collated a list of about 130 movies in Excel (yep) and moved it around for approximately 3 days until I ended up with a final list.

I’ve ended up with a movie from each from Tarantino, Scorsese, Coppola, The Coens, Nolan, PTA and two from David Fincher. People may question the addition of Kevin Smith and Bryan Singer but as ever these are movies ranked according to an inexplicable, personal enjoyment algorithm. If you disagree do your fucking own. (Smiley face).

1) Pulp Fiction. It had to be really. I’m very happy with this being my all time favourite movie (so far). QT perfects the formula he created with Reservoir Dogs. Wonderful characters in amusing situations chomping through fabulous dialogue. A movie I simply do not tire of rewatching. Review here.

2) The Godfather Parts 1 and 2. And here we do not see The Godfather part 3. The first two Godfather movies are simply put. Masterpieces. A deeply intense look at the inner workings of a Mafia family with (at least) three stellar performances from three Titanic Hollywood Stars. Just Epic and beautiful whilst viscously violent and horrifying at the same time. Review here.

3) Fight Club. David Fincher’s cerebral, darkly comical commentary on consumerism and masculinity. A strange and very cool film with plenty of surprises. Love it, love it, love it! Review here.

4) Goodfellas.

“You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it’s me, I’m a little fucked up maybe, but I’m funny how, I mean funny like I’m a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I’m here to fuckin’ amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?”.

What a film. Review here.

5) Clerks. A super low budget movie set solely in and around a convenience store in New Jersey. Very little happens other than the two eponymous store Clerks shooting the shit talking about sex and Star Wars. I mean what more do you want? Review here.

6) Se7en. A slow burn Police Procedural with a very dark heart. Pitt and Morgan are trying to track down the serial killer who is in turn trying to send a message to society by mirroring the seven deadly sins. Awesome. “Whats in the Booooooox?” Review here.

7) The Usual Suspects. A surprising crime thriller with a übersupermega twist that absolutely blew me away. “Hand me the fucking keys, you cocksucker, what the fuck?” Review here.

8) Boogie Nights. All of Paul Thomas Andersson’s work is pretty special but this 70s porn industry tale is essentially a masterpiece. Perfect levels of humour, drama and sadness with a absolutely killer soundtrack to boot. Review here.

9) The Big Lebowski. Another of those films where not a great deal actually happens. There is a case of mistaken identity and a pissy rug. There is a kinda-kidnapping, some bowling, a few white russians and a fair amount of weed but because of the superb characters and wonderful dialogue it is just….. brilliant. Review here.

10) The Dark Knight Trilogy. Best Trilogy ever? Cor, could be man. I rewatched these recently and completely reordered my ranking of the three movies. Batman Begins is superb. This is how I want my Batman, flawed, brutal and dark. Aces. My Batman Reviews here.

The full list is available here.

On “Clara” - the song

One of the highlights, for me, of Hell Bent was also a somewhat historic moment for the franchise in general. It was when the personal theme of a character, previously just heard on the soundtrack, actually became part of the narrative for the very first time, something the characters themselves recognized. Of course I refer to “Clara.” (I’ve inserted a break here as this is a longer than usual entry.)

RWBY VOLUME ONE AWARDS

Everyone’s favourite webseries about chromatically themed teenagers fighting monsters and gangsters and Weiss is about to return for its second outing of twelve episodes, and as such we the community are all high on the hippest drug the kids are taking these days that goes by the name of “hype”.

We’ve all also probably rewatched Volume One a half-hundred times, and certainly have our favourite moments, characters, weapons, ships et cetera. While simultaneously offering a bit of a retrospective on it all, I thought I’d put together a list of high points in the form of awards! With as much credibility and worth as an Emmy these days (I mean c'mon Emmy guys, did Tatiana Maslany kick your puppies or what?! I do appreciate the Fargo love, tho), but still, why not.

Mina’s Monday Recs: Fanfic Writer Appreciation Day Edition

Well, I’ve kind of been preoccupied with other things, which meant unfortunately that I was away from my laptop for most of Fanfic Writer Appreciation Day. :/ But for me, every day is Fanfic Writer Appreciation Day, so I thought it would be a good idea to do something a bit different this week from my usual recs. This week is entirely dedicated to fanfic. I’ve wanted to do a shoutout thing for ages – to a bunch of amazing writers whose writing has literally made it easier for me to get up some mornings, and whose stories I wish more than anything could be canon. I should also probably preface this by saying that I’m sure I will probably miss someone, but know that if I’ve ever left you a comment on your work, it’s because your story was quality. And of course, you can as always tag me in stuff you want me to read :)

So, in alphabetical order (because I need things to be in some kind of order, haha – but absolutely not in any particular order of awesomeness, because, well, all these writers are amazing):

absentlyabbie – HOLY WOW, Abbie is talented. :D I did not realise until I read her Toliver fic that I even shipped them together, but after I read Discoveries, it was difficult for me to ever remember not shipping them. The way she writes is so fluid and gorgeous, and it is definitely because of her fic that Toliver has basically ruined my life. Just saying. :P

alanna-the-lionheart – Her 2x23 missing moment fic is definitely one of the best characterised season 2 fics I’ve read. I love how beautifully the missing gaps in that episode were coloured in in No Going Back. Especially the bit when Felicity invites Oliver inside her apartment, hehe. :)

anonymous033 – Ahhhhh, the queen of all things Nyssara! Seriously, though, Sophie’s fic, Here, in This Room (nsfw), remains up there as one of my absolute favourite Arrow slash fics ever, for me. There isn’t nearly enough femmeslash out there, and when both Nyssa and Sara are so gorgeously and wonderfully characterised (not to mention the smut was HOT)… well, what’s not to like? Seriously, even if you’ve never read Nyssara before, you should totally give this one a shot because it is just that well-written.

anthfan - Wellllll, what can I say about this amazing author that hasn’t been said already? She just gets Oliver and Felicity so beautifully. Whether it’s a small missing moment drabble from 3x08 (The Table) or a fully-fledged smutty kind-of AU (Devil’s Backbone), you can guarantee that it will packed with emotion and incredibly well-characterised Olicity goodness.

arrow-through-my-writers-block - There is something fabulous about reading season 4 spec fics - and not just because they feature CANON established Olicity. It’s also because, well, this author’s New Threads series (my faves are part 1 and part 3) does so brilliantly in tiding me over this hellish hiatus while also weaving in the details we’re slowly learning about the team at cons and so on.

aubvi - Ahhhh, carefree!Olicity and during their road trip, no less, is my absolute fave. Aubrey’s dialogue between my OTP is just fab - especially in this lovely drabble, Caught in the Rain. She is definitely my go-to when I want some Olicity road trip happy fic. :D

dettiot - Melissa is one of my favourite smut writers, and with good reason, too. I mean, check out Now Playing, Number 14 (nsfw). My favourite thing about this fandom is the way everyone grabs at things the cast do or say and incorporate it (rather deliciously, I should add) into fic, and this was no exception. And, you know, I am a SUCKER for road trip smut, hehe.

dust2dust34 - OH GOD BRE. Behold another Olicity smut goddess! Literally, her fics kill me. Whether it’s a gloriously naughty 3x20 smutlet like this one (nsfw) which happens to be the first fic I read by Bre, I think, or the achey perfection that is Mutual Release (nsfw), this wonderful writer never fails to deliver - and not just in terms of the sexytimes. Her writing is also just so beautiful.

effie214 - GAH. I don’t know how she does it, but literally everything Effie writes is pure poetry. Take come let me show you where life begins, for instance. Her style is so incredibly lush and beautiful and ARGH. And as if that wasn’t enough to ruin my life on its own, her tag fics are also just things of beauty. This one (nsfw) remains my favourite, just because you can never really get enough of Oliver going down on Felicity, imho. :D

gnimaerd - Duuuuuude. Sinceriously, I don’t even know what to say about this amazing author’s writing - except that SHE LITERALLY WRITES ALL THE THINGS I LIKE. Talk about being the queen of all things femmeslash! I could go on and on about her beautiful Olicity fics too, but I will focus for now on her gorgeous (and HOT) Nyssara fic, New Scars (nsfw) which quite literally took my breath away and made me realise how much I love Nyssara. And then there’s this amazing Laulicity fic called Distraction Techniques that does such a brilliant job on exploring Laurel’s character when she’s at her weakest. And of course, Laurel is my darling and there isn’t nearly enough fanfic out there with her in it - much less paired with another woman.

hopedreamlovepray - God, I ADORE how introspective this author’s fics are - to the point that I literally feel like I am in Felicity’s head when reading anything by her. Case in point: this wonderful fic set during 2x08, Just a Dance, which is a great homage to one of my favourite Olicity episodes in season 2 and, I think, a turning point for Oliver in terms of his characterisation. And then there’s this rather sexy fic that is the perfect domestic!Olicity story, Hanging Pictures and is another one of my favourite season 4 spec fics.

jedichick04 - Ahh, Rachel’s characterisation is always spot-on - whether we’re talking about Oliver, Felicity, Diggle or even Slade. I particularly love the funny lines she gives Felicity. In Where There’s Smoak, I was reminded why the timeline of Arrow Season 2.5 is known as the Summer of UST. I nearly spat out my tea laughing when Felicity says (entirely platonically, of course) “You look hot” to Oliver. :D And I have also been loving the stuff she’s produced for the Arrow Summer Rewatch, such as Workouts and Wisdom, which is such a fab missing moment in season 2. I love it when Oliver and Felicity talk things out. <3

juliesioux - I’ve said before that fanfic poetry doesn’t get nearly enough recognition in the fandom, and poems like this one really make me wish I could have that way with words. Such prettiness. Not to mention unaðurwhich is quietly sexy along with being really well-written. (Don’t be put off by the fact that the title is in another language, btw - the actual fic is in English, but I like how the author has used Icelandic words for her titles.)

lostolicityscenes - The author of these wonderful scenes deserves a medal. I adore the script format and the unique way these lost Olicity scenes play out. The Apartment is probably my fave. So much lovely Olicity banter, and as usual, the funniest Freudian slips by Felicity. :D

louiseblue1 - Lou is such a great writer! My favourite is definitely the Unexpected series. I love love love road trip fics, as I’m sure is obvious, and this little series was wonderful. Even though there were definitely angsty moments in it, and some serious Joliver tension in places, too, that angst contrasted beautifully with the much lighter moments. I still giggle at Barry the duck, to this day. ;)

machawicket - AHHH. Macha’s OlicitySpotting story (Hiking is Stupid) remains one of my absolute favourite fanfics based on that ridiculously feels inducing photo Stephen shared with us a while back. Just. WOW. And, actually, it was because of Macha that I even know what the term OlicitySpotting means, haha. I LOVE seeing how outsiders view Olicity and almost always think relationship goals. And then there’s this lovely domestic!Olicity fic which begins with the line “Why are you holding my underwear?” that had me squeeing until I was pretty sure my heart burst with the feels.

quiveringbunny - What would a rec list be without Lisa on it? To this day, The Dark Hours still gives me chills when I reread. I probably have already said I have a thing for missing moments, but especially from 2x23, and this was another excellent one. And one of my favourite things about this fandom is how so many of the amazing authors out there - which includes Lisa - are able to get Felicity’s babbling and lengthy internal monologue down to a tee.

seetheskyaboveus - Whoaaa. Her smut is legendary. I mean, check out Mission: The Wedding Night (nsfw). The author apologised for it being so long, but I LOVED IT. The only thing better than smut featuring my OTP is when the smut is plotty. :D

skcolicity - So there are fics that you enjoy, and there are fics that you squee over and there are fics that you giggle about because really you shouldn’t be reading it in public. And then there are fics like A Moment of Grief, which are so very well-written and stay with you because of how close to home it was. It’s angsty, for sure, but if you’re looking for a fic that addresses mental illness that imo Oliver is likely to suffer from, this is the one. At any rate, it stayed with me for a long time - well after I had finished reading it.

supersillyanddorky06 - Holy shit. That is what I say most of the time when I’ve finished something of Matty’s. I first caught sight of her work when the MTV Reblogs were happening - her Things They Learn series was sosososo good. Such a fabulous exploration of my OTP. And then I came across Underwear - the Door to Opportunities and nearly bust a gut laughing because what a wonderful and lightly naughty fic! It was after reading this fic that I realised how much I was missing out on all the alternate first meeting fics out there. Still, this one is definitely one of the best AUs I’ve read. Especially when it includes my darling Tommy.

susannahmccormick - Holy road trip gorgeousness, Batman! It’s great that we as a fandom use the scraps of info given to us in the hellatus as fic inspiration, and Ceci n’est pas un conte is a great example of that. (I’m assuming this was based on what Stephen said about when he thought Oliver realised he was in love with Felicity… if not, Susannah is obviously a psychic, lol.) There is so much lovely banter between them that I absolutely adore. This is one of those must read road trip fics.

theshipsfirstmate - Yet another wonderful author of amazing road trip fic. My fave of the series is probably Pack Light, just because of all the tiny details the author picked up on - like the earrings and the Porsche and the dress. And there is such a beautiful, understated sexiness to each fic that I think is just the best.

thevegantargaryen - Okay, I will be honest. I literally only just discovered this author this morning, but my GOD am I glad I did. I am super excited for Sara to come back, however briefly, to Arrow verse, and the way that was explored with a couple of characters in the following drabbles was just fab. For instance, this Nyssara fic has such a unique take on Sara in a way that, for me, totally fits the more mystical mood season 4 is supposed to have. And then I came across this Canarrow fic that literally had me wailing. I’m an Olicity shipper through and through, but I LOVE the Canarrow dynamic and the haunting style of this fic still gives me chills now.

wagamiller - AHHHH. I first came across this delightful author around the time of us getting those 3x20 promos, when she wrote this spec fic called The Eye of the Storm (nsfw). Just. UGH. So many feels as Oliver and Felicity go for round two. :D And then there was this amazing fic, you’re the one that I want, which was delicious in an entirely different way - I’ve fantasised a lot about Oliver and Felicity being on his Ducati before, and MAN was there serious UST in this! There was so much in this fic that made me squee.

yespleasehawkeye - And while we’re on the topic of UST… check out Captivation. I absolutely love the way this author writes. She has such a way with words that I end up reading her fics again and again. The best thing is the way she writes established!Olicity - there is always such a gorgeous familiarity between them and their interactions. And obviously I love it when Felicity teases Oliver. :D And her smut is beautiful. One in Ten (nsfw) is just so incredibly well-written. Sure, it’s angsty, and with some delicate subject matter, but it was also handled and addressed really well. And the smut was gorgeous. I was sobbing by the end of it. You probably will too.

Good Lord, this is a long post. I’m sure I’ve missed people, and for that, I apologise. But if I have ever left you a comment on AO3, or  reblogged/liked your work, or if I’ve recced something of yours before, then that means I think you’re amazing - just as much as everyone on this list. Keep writing, keep reading and keep commenting/reccing/reblogging so all the fanfic writers out there get the recognition they deserve! And if you haven’t already, be sure to follow these fabulous people and leave a comment on their works.

Spread the love, as always, my lovelies. <3

(Also, apologies if you got notified twice. I tried editing something and the whole post messed up, so I had to go through and re-type things. Sorry.)

The Flarrow Screening - It was real

Usually, when you start to write, you know where to begin. You know what you are gonna tell your audience, you know how it’s gonna end. Today, I’m not sure where to start, I don’t know what to say. The entire Flarrow Screening experience has been so overwhelming that it’s pretty hard to summarize everything, to put a name on every emotion and to not forget anything.

How it began

I’ve never been the kind of girl who wins stuff. I’ve never won anything at the lotto or even at the local bingo when I was a kid! I’m pretty lucky in life as I live in the US now and fair enough, this country offers much more opportunities than many other, especially when it comes to TV shows.  A lot of people asked me how I manage to win. Well, easy answer :) I entered… and I won! Pure luck! I haven’t entered everyday… I did ask my friends to enter the contest but I’m the one who won at the end. I’ve had a really hard time settling in the US so I saw this as a payback from the universe :)

I received the email just after Draw Back your Bow. I finished my review on the episode, was about to post it and just checked my emails before that. I could not believe it! I could not believe this was real! I actually had to have the CW bracelet around my wrist to really believe we would make it (nice reminder on the stroke jbuffyangel, i almost forgot!).

What goes through your mind at this moment is just indescribable. I was to see the entire cast of my favourite TV shows. The shows I’m dedicated to. The shows that rhythm my week and make me happy. The actors I follow on Twitter and consider like my babies. There’s just no word for that! Just a gasp, followed by a lot of pacing, reading the email over and over again! Don’t forget the shakes… I was shaking for one hour! I’m a really rational person but this just blew out my mind!!

When you enter a contest, you don’t necessarily think that you’re gonna win. You think that you may win but quickly, the reason takes over and you realize that the odds may not be in your favor. This is nothing else that a defense mechanism to avoid disappointment. I’ve always told myself though that if I was to win, I would totally invite @jbuffyangel… Looks like I kept my word :) I told Jen that I truly believe that if you do good for people, people will do good for you. Jen is somehow (and I haven’t told you this hun), the one who brought me back to writing and blogging, for the first time in English. To me, that would deserve at least a ticket to see the cast of Arrow and the Flash!

Once my brain was back to normal functioning, I HARASSED Jen, I literally HARRASSED her. She could probably tell the story from her side but I was so afraid she wouldn’t get the message on time that I harass her to answer my messages… after an episode like the Cupid one… yeah, good try Em, but Jen was really likely to be writing her meta at that time! She indeed reply the morning after :) and then it was organized! We were to go to LA to attend the premiere of the Flash and Arrow crossover. Blow minding!

Meeting Jen

I won’t bother you with the details of the logistics to organize a last minute trip. I’m from Northern California so literally I can drive to LA… for 8 hours but still. Was not that much of a big deal! My boss gave me Friday off for me to enjoy my screening. Sweet!

I arrived in LA on Friday night – Jen was to land on Saturday midday. By pure curiosity, I drove by the theatre in the am.

There was a massive line waiting in front of the theater!!! And it was only 10 am! Guys, at that very moment, I freaked out! I freaked out big time because I was on my way to pick up Jen and there was no way on Earth we would make it on time to have good seats! Nothing like a wrong impression to increase your adrenaline. We learnt later on there was an event in the am and it was not at all a line for the arrow. Pfffeeww relieved!!

But let’s come back to the story. I was on my way to the airport to pick up Jen. In LAX… not that this airport is the most gigantic airport ever… To meet someone in such a massive space, it requires a bit of organization! Especially when you’ve never seen each other… We made it though!

It’s funny how quickly you can bond with someone you share a passion with J a few miles on the motorway and here we are talking Olicity theories and Arrow concepts. I don’t know how many of you can talk about their obsession… no, sorry… addiction to their friends and family but this is surely not my case. My entourage doesn’t understand this side of me and most of the time is not even aware of it.  It was just a fantastic experience to be able to talk with Jen about Arrow, Olicity, Oliver, felicity, Black Canary, etc… And you all know that, Jen is pretty amazing, right? You know what, she’s the very same in real life! She’s funny, spiritual, super smart and so loveable! If I would like to be really cheesy, I could say that she’s a big part of the reason why this event was so unforgettable and unbelievable!

The wait

Queuing is a part of the full experience. There’s no fan event without a bit of Queuing and a bit of bonding. It’s one of the most genuine and loveable part of it. You cue, you talk to people who share the same interest as you, you get to know them, you exchange names and numbers. You sometimes meet people who aer hardcore comics fan (I was surprised how many they were!!) They are of course 100% Lauriver fans – sorry, can’t talk to you or we’ll start a fight in the middle of the queue! Some fans are REALLY onto it! Like quiver and T-shirts onto it! Some have seen some light and decided to give it a go. The crowd is eclectic but they share one thing : everyone is really enthusiastic! No drama, just a crowd eager to see what will happen. We happened to be next to the parking entrance and get to see the limos dropping off Stephen Amell and Co.

The excitement spreads in the crowd… we’re almost there. LA is getting colder as the sun goes down but the crowd goes suddenly warm when Stephen Amell appears in person to greet fans! Bless this guy! May this god of hotness and smile be blessed! I honeslty thught I would react like this :

But instead I was pretty petrified. And I was not the only one! Everyone was so quiet… like OMG, he’s here!!!! He’s fucking here!!! There was a lot of swearing when he appeared!! WE SAW STEPHEN AMELL!!!!!!!!! He was the first one we saw and somehow the most important!

Unfortunately he stopped 5 feet from us… gutted! I envied Jen so much being tall… from my 4'9, i couldn’t see much…But still, we saw him from really close and we would never have this opportunity if it was not for the event. I’ll come back on Steven Amell later on, in the second part of this recap :)

(there’s nothing as rewarding as a crappy photo of your favorite actor!)

Then goes the ID check and bracelet (I’m still wearing mine). The best informed fans share what is about to happen “there’ll be goodies for everyone and a surprise at the end” SWWEEEEEEETT!!!! Open the doors guys!!! After bumping into Mrs Amell (damn she’s gorgeous!) and Jen recognizing Captain Boomerang, We are good to go! Let’s enter the dream.

THE FLARROW SCREENING

The screening was organized in 3 parts : The Flash and Arrow screening back to back, the Q&A session and the surprise – the projection of the Winter Finale teasers.

The episodes

I won’t spoil here in terms of what had already been released BEFORE the projection, I’m just gonna give my opinion on a few things.

The Flash

If I had to choose between the two episodes, I would be Team Flash (and not because of my Star Lab Tshirt!). I’m an Arrow fan first and if I had to choose one show between the two, I would go Arrow 100%.

However,

The Flash vs Arrow is such a great episode. It combines character development, humor, action, romance, team bonding and unexpected sequences (ish..). Grant Gustin delivers a spectacular performance in this episode, Diggle is incredibly funny, Oliver’s entrance is to die for, Cisco is as hilarious as ever, Whels as mysterious as ever too! Add on top of that some A-MA-ZING special effects, some core team Arrow, team Flash, a real relationship developed between the two worlds and you have the recipe for an excellent episode.

The crowd couldn’t stop laughing and cheering – it was a fantastic moment. Some lines are incredibly funny – you’ll understand when you’ll watch it! The strength of the Flash relies on combining all these components with a really good story. It works! I’ve never believed I would love the Flash so much but I do. I don’t ship West Allen. I could ship SnowBarry… but I just watch the Flash for the Flash! Love it!

Don’t make me wrong, it’s really hard to pick when you watch the two episodes back to back. They have such a different style, a different atmosphere, a different dynamic. Give it a try someday. Watch one episode of the Flash followed by one of Arrow. The shift in dynamic is obvious. That’s what we felt with Jen last night and that how the crowd reacted as well.

Arrow

As soon as the Flash was over, the darker side of Arrow took over. Think about it, The Flash mainly happens during day light when Arrow is mainly a night show. The two heroes have a lot in common but have different personalities, different pasts and are at totally different stages emotionally speaking. It impacts their respective show drastically.

The Arrow episode was really good as well. The team was still at the centre of the episode but somehow, Oliver is not as important in this episode as Barry is in his. This is just my opinion, 24 hours after watching the show, without (obviously) rewatching it. In this episode, we have our bad guy, the beautiful Team Arrow (and Olicity) moments, the sweet moments that tear us up J , the incredible stunts and a good portion of humor as well, brought by Colton, Diggle, Cisco and Felicity as usual. One of our favourite elements of the show is used a bit differently and IT’S FUNNY! Genuinely speaking, my memories begin to fade already and the sleep deprivation not helping, I struggle to remember the entire episode! I know, this is shameful!!

What I remember though is that THE END of this episode is the best moment of BOTH episodes. Yes, Arrow Episode, you win on that one! Let’s call it a tie!

The teaser

I’m gonna talk about the teaser quickly as it is still episode related. I’ll develop an article on the actors and Q&A a bit later on. Either tonight or tomorrow (I have 4 hour sleep and 8 hour drive in my system at the moment… it’s pretty unbalanced!).

I’m not a Flash addict so unfortunately, I don’t know what has been revealed so far for the Winter finale so I prefer not taking about it! It looks awesome as such, dramatic and intense.

Once more I won’t spoil anything about the Arrow teaser. AT ALL. If there’s anything that should not be spoken of, it would be this teaser. This is the first time I’ve seen a teaser for Arrow looking like a movie. Looking like I would pay some serious money to actually see this. Marc promised a 9 out of 10 Olicity scene. I think he’ll deliver. Stephen Amell promised a season finale quality episode, I think it will be better than our two first season finales. Maybe we were just really high on Arrow emotions and we found the teaser absolutely fantastic… or maybe it just promises to be a fantastic piece of Arrow.

TBC… Actors and the end of the journey… tomorrow!

There's no denying it anymore

It’s Friday. For a large part of the Glee fandom that’s the end of the hiatus, for a few (un?)lucky ones like me living in different time zones, there’s still one more day to breathe before it starts again for the last time.

The hiatus that seemed like it would never end is finally over, and now that it is, many of us would give a good deal to see it extended for just a little while longer, to delay the inevitable for just those few more days/weeks/whatever. I know that if the choice were mine, I’d probably keep pushing it back indefinitely just to always have something to be looking forward to.
