This summer it is possible to go whale viewing on board MS Ópal that is powered by electricity. This is a professional test-project by the company “Norðursigling” to get green energy out to sea, and reduce environmental impact that whale watching is usually leaving behind in loud Diesel engine with a lot of smoke. MS Ópal at Húsavík (North-east Iceland) has up till now been powered by fossil fuel, but now it is having installed electrical system with eclectic motor, but having the Scania Diesel engine to help if the electric is not enough for the entire whale watching trip, that can last for a few hours up to hole day. The batteries will get it’s juice from the main grid of Iceland (Landsvirkjun), and as said before the battery fully loaded should last for sailing a hole day normally.
