HTTYD Western AU: Wild Spirits Prologue

His heart was wild,

But I didn’t want to catch it,

I wanted to run with it,

To set mine free.

               My names Hiccup.

Great name I know, and I honestly still don’t know how I was carted off with it. I suppose it could be because I’m one of the smallest wranglers in Berk, or that I was born early. I’ve never asked, although I suppose it would make a good question.

My father is the great Stoick “the Vast” Haddock, one of the best and well-known sheriff’s in the country. He’s big, has got all the muscle, taller than most, can shoot any gun from any distance and still hit the target. He’s a man not to be reckoned with, and many outlaws have gone under his hand.

Me? I’m his deputy. Well, that’s what I’m told. And even though I wear the little brass star on my chest, often time’s I hide it under my bandanna or pin it inside my shirt. It’s not like anyone listens to me anyways, and that little star has gotten me into more trouble then I care to explain. The title deputy isn’t really acknowledged by… anybody, it’s more of a statement that yes, I’m Hiccup, the failure of a son to Stoick Haddock.

The title “Hiccup the Useless” is starting to pick up now, and I try to ignore it, but Samson “Snotlout” Jorgenson finds it some kind of joke, as do the twins, Tyler “Tuffnut” Thoroston and Rachel “Ruffnut” Thoroston. Fred “Fishlegs” Ingerman seems to be the calmer one out for the other teen wranglers my age. But he can afford to be shy, for he’s got the bulk to make up for it and a good shooting hand. He’s never been mean to me… exactly… but has definitely never stood up for me either.

Then, there’s Astrid Hofferson, one of the best horse wranglers in Berk. Even though she’s just fifteen, she can still wrangle a wild mustang down with one hand tied behind her back. And gods, she’s one of the prettiest gals in town. She’s got this wild blonde hair that seems untamable, always tied back in a heavy braid although hair seems determined to escape it. She wears this old Stetson that I haven’t seen her go anywhere without, along with a leather beaded headband of some sort that overlapped her hair and forehead. Most of the time she wears leather leggings tucked inside worn cowboy boots, and even though I know she doesn’t do it to look good, she accidently makes herself even more attractive. Added with the tight blue tank top and leather vest, exposing her bare arms that had leather chords tied around the biceps- she’s a woman that all the teens in Berk are after.

Even though she’s never out and out made fun of me, like the others, she’s never tried to stop the bullying either. But that gives me hope that perhaps she doesn’t truly hate me- at least not as much as the others do. Still, I don’t stand a chance. Who’s going to want Hiccup the Useless anyways? Not to mention I’m skinnier then a pole, and I’m shorter than her. Plus I’m a terrible shot.

Most deputies out here can shoot fairly well- if not reward winners. Not me. I’ve been practicing with a gun since I was eight, and even now when I’m fifteen and sworn in as a deputy, I still can’t shoot straight to save my life. Dad’s tried to teach me, a long time ago, but after five tries and failures he gave up, and it was Gobber who took over the job.

Gobber’s my Dad’s best friend and voice of reason, although to me he’s like another father… or more like the father I never had. He teases, sure, and he’s rough at times but Gobber knows when to stop. And he’s always been there for me, even in the hardest times when all my Dad and I seemed to do was fight. I even stayed over at his Blacksmith’s shop a couple of nights when I was too tired to go home, or just plain didn’t want to.

I’ve worked with Gobber over the past three years in the forge, it distracts me. And many might think that me, as a deputy, would have many and beyond duties to tend to. Nope. I do not. My Dad just gave me the title deputy years ago, before I became a total nuisance Now I carry it just so he can call on my whenever he wishes without fighting me, for I’m his deputy, and I should listen to his rules no matter what- even if I find them petty and not exactly the jobs deputies should be doing. I’m more his delivery boy then anything, so I for the most part hang out at the forge and help Gobber with all the work there. It’s one place where I feel like I can actually do something right, like I stand a chance. I don’t goof up as much, I know how to handle myself in the forge. It’s my only refuge.

I’m not allowed to go out and hunt outlaws, bandits, or cattle rustlers like my Father and the other “teens in training” do. I’m told to stay behind and “stay out of trouble”, and even though I’m the deputy and should be the one to watch the town, Spitelout, my Uncle, is put in charge of Berk while my Dad’s away.

Yep, so is my life on Berk. Not too terrible, but definitely not great either. I have a feeling it won’t change any time soon either, so I try to do the best with it, the best that I can.

It’s hard, yeah, and times get tough. But I’ll just try and push through and hope for the best.

Hiccup stepped out onto the wooden deck of the porch, lifting a hand to shield his eyes from the sunlight that skimmed shadows across the ground. The sun was barely peaking above the hills in the distance, and Hiccup could feel it in every bone in his body. Every part of him was screaming at him to go back to bed, to lie down and get some well needed rest. But he knew that if he ever wanted to get anything done- or even survive for that matter- he’d have to get his butt moving and head down to the forge.

The nearest larger cities are Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden, and Strasbourg/France. Gengenbach is twinned with the town of Obernai in Alsace, France.

Mischief in Autumn’s Lost Wood

Autumn’s Lost Wood is an old growth forest ringing the western edge of Peyroux, our tiny, haunted village. Lingering in perpetual autumn, the forest is chilly and dark, even in the daytime.

The following happened today:

A ghost longed for books but lacked a physical form. It lingered near a campsite’s fire pit, eagerly awaiting campers to share their tales.

In another part of the forest…

One of the forest’s resident dryad taught the local owls to enunciate “I know.” Her giggles rang like rain as the hikers shakily asked, “Know what?” They gripped their walking sticks tightly as the chorus of “I know”-s grew steadily.

At the edge of the woods…

A family of shadowferns bloomed, casting large shadows on the ground. Triggered by the heavy darkness, mushrooms slowly began to sprout and a small nocturnal pixie dug her way up from the soil. In the safety and comforting gloom accorded by the ferns and fungus, she watched the lazy rays of the sun drip from the forest canopy. It was a rare treat, to see so much light.

This life, part 6

Pairing: Reader x Loki

Word Count: 3326

Warning: Angst, little smutty talk (like a little tiny bit)

Part 1  part 2  part 3 part 4  part 5

You sat watching the setting sun on the terrace as your belongings were brought in.  The Queen had made sure everything you owned had been brought from the home you had lived in for the last years.  She wanted to give you every bit of help she could.  It was her way of welcoming you home to the palace.  The place where she knew you belonged. You were not sure how you felt being back in the family chambers.  The smell… the memories like ghosts haunting your thoughts.  There were far more good memories here than the bad ones at the end. Those were the ones you were choosing to remember now.  If you thought of anything else, you feared that you would not make it through the night.

As you slept, your dreams were different.  They were memories, flashes of a time when you were younger.  Almost a woman running the fields in a long gown, laughing.  It was only a glimpse, as when you turned to look at who was with you, the memory would change.  This time it was you crying as Loki called you a whore.  You remembered the shock and pain you felt as the words hit your ears and you saw the look on his face as he said it.  The hate that was there, burned into your core. It was then that you had run off, unable to stay in his presence.  Everything flashed once more bringing you to the moment you removed your helm on Midgard. It felt like the dream was trying to take deeper but you refused.  Fighting against it you slowly became more aware of the bed in which you lay.  It took a moment but you sat up gazing about the room feeling as though something was off.  Were there eyes there?

It sounded insane as you rubbed the weariness from your eyes.  Dawn was not long from breaking as you noticed the faint light through the window. Today was the day you would meet the Defenders as their Captain, adding to the legacy of your family’s name.  Dressing in your armor first, you made sure to give yourself time to eat and be at the training area before anyone else.  As they started to gather, you could hear the whispers.  Some were amazed you stood before them; others doubted you could do what was asked of you.  You had been doubted before and look where you stood now.

“You all know who I am. Therefore, I will skip the formalities. Train hard and you will represent Asgard with pride.  If you let your prejudices consume you, decide to make the choice to disregard what I will teach and you will be removed.  Do you understand?”  There were more whispered murmurs from the group as you looked around.  “I want an answer.  Do you understand?”

“We understand.”  Was the answer received.  It echoed against the walls of the training area.  You nodded letting the training begin. Formations and defense moves were to start.  There were several pushbacks with several members but you pushed right back.  No one was going to force you out. Especially when you knew, you could make them better.

Loki lived in the shadows since his return.  Just as he had when everyone thought him dead.  Now he had the opportunity to go into the light of day and here he stood watching you.  The ache in his chest was made only worse with his proximity to you now.  His heart nearly exploded in seeing you again on Midgard. You were the last person he ever thought he would see again.  Now he suffered with you so close.  It took every fiber of his being to not grab you and show you what was in his heart.  Long ago, he thought you knew, but… No, he could not think of it again.  It hurt more every time he thought of it.

One of the soldiers had taken a sly shot at you causing you to fall.  Loki nearly jumped off the terrace where he stood to take off the man’s head.  However, you flipped up from the ground grabbing the man by the back of the neck, bringing his face against your knee, crushing his nose.  You were a blur as you spun around, connecting your foot with the side of his head.  The man flew to the ground with a loud grunt.  Loki had to cover his mouth to prevent a cheer from being heard.  He did not think he had ever been so proud of you than at the moment.  That feeling only increased as you stood over the man asking if he yielded.    Loki could not hear what the man said but he watched as you offered your hand to help him stand.

“Has she not grown lovelier over the years?”  Frigga’s voice sounded from behind him.  His posture stiffened as his knuckles turned white from his grip on the terrace wall.

“Good morning, mother.” She laughed as she rested a hand on his shoulder.

“Yes it is a good morning, Loki.  Overseeing our new Captain?”  He sighed releasing his grip.

“I think you know better.” Frigga turned Loki to face her.

“I do.  Circumstances are far different now my son.  You both are free to love whom you choose.  Tell her… show her what is in here.”  Resting a hand over his heart, her eyes pleaded with him.

“It is not so easy, mother. I said so many cruel things, committed so many atrocities I do not believe she could forgive it all.  There is her one betrayal of me… It never leaves my mind.” His mother looked confused.  Never had she heard anything from him or you about a betrayal.

“What betrayal?”  Loki shook his head.

“It truly means nothing now. But it will always be there in the back of my thoughts.”  Your calls to the soldiers could be heard up on the terrace causing them both to look down towards those gathered.  They watched quietly for several minutes as the warriors ran through the motions you were showing them.  It started to look like a well-played dance as they started to move in unison.  “Even now she draws them in with little effort. They all flock to her and they do not know why.”

“Whether she cares to admit it, she is as her father in that way.  People just listened to him as they do now to her.  You are correct though, she does not know it.”

Time passed by so quickly you hardly believed you had been Captain nearly a month.  Those under your command were making great strides and training was going well.  You felt as though you found what your purpose was.  Everyone could see how much happier you were recently.  Training with the Defenders during the day and doing whatever pleased you at night.  Many times it was enjoying ale and stories with those you held close.  For once, everything felt right.  Drawing a hot bath, you stretched out letting your muscles relax after another hard day of training.  You closed your eyes as you rested your head against the back of the vessel.  A hint of a smile played with you lips as you toyed with the idea of how good it would feel to have a man between your legs right now.  Pushing slowly into you as he kissed your neck.  Damn it, it had been far too long since that had occurred.

A frown replaced the smile as you thought back to the last time.  It was awful and the man had been in such a hurry to get between your thighs that he finished quickly and had pleasured you naught.  The best time had been your first.  Worshipping your body throughout, his tongue had tasted every bit of your skin.  He had ensured any pain felt was followed by more pleasure than you had ever dreamed. There had not been another time such as that.  Thinking of his lips on your skin now… it made all your sensitive areas tingle desperately.

“By the Gods… no.” Standing quickly from the bath, you dried and put on your leather armor.  There was only one way you could think to work off that feeling. Thor found you not long after fighting an unseen target with an aggression that was rare.

“Should I ask or will it remove my head from my shoulders?”  You did not answer at first as you were heaving for breath.

“I needed… to rid my mind… of thoughts…. This was… the only way.”  Pointing a water skin close by, he picked it up tossing it to you.  He stood looking at you with a raised brow.  “No, I will not confess it to you.”

He laughed his deep barrel laugh as he crossed his arms over his chest.  “I will let you have your thoughts.  Though I may have something that may support ridding them.”  You emptied half the skin before looking back to him.

“Tell me…”

Thor’s something was a journey to one of the outer villages to stop raiders that had been ransacking over that part of the realm.  Many homes had been destroy and there were reports of people taken.  It was unknown what had become of them.  Word had been sent to Odin for help.  The king gave the task to Thor to remedy.  Now here all seven of you stood in the midst of the burning village.  Thor had forced Loki to join the group.  Told him it was important to show that he was longer who he had been.  It was a chance to redeem himself.  Reminding him of all the times they had joined to fight together. Loki merely rolled his eyes but joined knowing he would see you.  It was torture in itself but he had no resistance against what you did to him.

The plan was to take out of raiders you could now in the main area of the village, saving what innocents you could.  Then you all would concentrate on finding those who orchestrated the attacks.  Within the hour, the village had been mostly cleared. Word came that several of the leaders had taken over a farm on the western edge.  It backed up to a dense forest where the terrain made it difficult to attack from that direction.  Obviously one of the reasons they chose that area.  The group stood together on the hill looking down at the farm.  There were only two guarding outside but you knew there were far more on the inside.  “Fald?” You asked with a wicked grin. Volstagg groaned and Fandral rubbed his face.  Thor looked between the group then back to you.  Loki was confused.

“Fald?  The village of Fald?”  You looked back to him with a devious glint in your eye.

“Yes, that Fald.” Thor groaned but extended his arm as to let you go ahead.

“My friend… Try not to take the damn building down on top of us again.”  You shrugged as you took off down the hill.  The darkness masking your movements from the raiders.  The group followed behind as you came upon the large barn.  Voices could be heard from inside, far more than you expected.  Thor and Volstagg walked in front of your ready to pull open the large barn doors.  “Ready?”

That grin had not left your face; nodding to him, you started to pull the energy from deep within you.  The two men pulled the doors off their hinged causing those inside quite the shock.  Walking closer with your glowing hands caused more though they started to run towards you.  “I thank you for the welcome party.  Though I think you all need to learn to not take that which does not belong to you.”  Thor and Volstagg ran out of the way, as you sent the electric pulse towards those coming for you.  It knocked them all back, sending a few through the barn walls.  Loki was in utter amazement.  “The building still stands.  Does that please you?”

Thor laughed before running into the fight.  Everyone else following behind.  Swords and hammers clashed, screams of those who met their end filled the air.  Blood marred your armor as you fought through their ranks.  The group had been separated by the end of the battle.  There had been more raiders in the forest that had come to join in the fight when they heard the screams.  Over all the commotion, you heard a different scream.  One of panic and fear, from a woman.  As you glanced over at your companions, you noted they were all well prepared and able to finish those that were left.  The scream rang out again forcing you to follow it.

The far end of the farm was a line of old trees.  You found two raiders attempting to drag a girl off towards the woods.  She could not have been more than fifteen.  “Let her go before I relieve you of several favorite appendages.”  Your swords drawn holding one in each hand ready.  The one that held the girl pulled a blade up to her throat, showing a smile that held few teeth.

“This one is ours. Step close and we will see how pretty she bleeds.”  The girl tried to squirm by the blade pierce just a bit of her flesh causing blood to well up then trail down her neck.  There was no way for you to use your abilities and not hit the girl as well. Tentatively you took a step close. The man pulled the blade even closer causing the girl to cry out.  “I told you… I don’ care if I kill her.  Always more I can take.”

“Take me then.  Let the child go.”  Both men look surprised you would be willing to trade yourself for some girl.

“Fine, drop your weapons. “ You did as they said, dropping both blades to the ground.  “Good, now… step closer.”  It did not take a genius to know what they were going to do.  The second man grabbed you roughly.  “Good now we gotcha both.”

“Not today.”  Throwing your head back you heard the crunching of bone of the one that had you before punching the other one in the face.  He lost his grip on the girl and you screamed at her to run to your companions.  She did not wait for further instructions, running faster than she ever had.  Both men converged on you, pissed that you cost them their prize.  One of them slammed his fist into your stomach causing the wind to fly from your lungs.  The other kicked your ribs hard as you were bent over.  Somehow, you were able to catch yourself from falling completely over.  Turning quickly you kicked one in the gut causing him to fall.  The other hit you in the head with something hard.  That sent you to your knees.  You could feel the blood dripping down the side of your face as you tried to call your energy to you.

“Hold her…”  A third man’s voice called out.  Your arms were pulled back behind you holding tight.  As much as you wanted to fight back, the pain in your head would not allow it.  A metal collar was secured around your neck sending a jolt through your body.  Another blow to the back of the head and your world faded into darkness.

You companions had cleared out the rest of the raiders from the farm.  They were all exhausted, filthy, and quite ready to return to Asgard. Sif was the first to notice.  “Where has [Y/N] gone?  I have not seen her in some time.”  Everyone looked around quickly before deciding to separate to search for you.  Several hours passed before they admitted you were gone.

“We need to find her, now!” Loki was on the brink of panic as his heart pounded in his chest.  If something happened to you…  It was then the girl you had saved came out of hiding.    Timidly she approached the group.

“Pardon, my Prince… the woman told me to find you.” Thor looked down at the girl.

“The woman?  Our companion?”  Nodding, the girl looked petrified.  “Tell me, where is she?”

“Those men, they wanted to take me.  Called me a new plaything.  She stopped them.  Told me to run and find you.  They took her.  They beat her and dragged her off.  I just wanted to see if she was all right.  I should have found you as she said.  I am so sorry…”  The girl broke into hysterical sobs before Fandral embraced her.

“It’s all right child. We will find her.”  He whispered quietly in her ear and he comforted her.  Once she had calmed they were able to determine the direction you had been taken. Your friends went off into the night searching for you.  Their only hope was finding you before any further damage could be inflicted.

They searched for days for you, to no avail.  It was as though you and your captures had vanished into the void.  Heimdall could not even locate you.  Loki was half-mad with his worry.  Every moment sleeping or waking was of you and his love for you. It consumed him.    The six of them were camped out along one of the major rivers of Asgard.  He walked off to drown in his own thoughts without having to hear the horrid snores of Volstagg.  Thor followed not far behind.  “We will find her brother, I promise you.”

“Promises are worthless until she has returned.”  The curtness stung a bit, but Thor chose to not return it.

“You are not the only one who cares for her.  Every person here loves her in their own way.  None of them will give up until she is home.” Loki shook his head walking towards the water.

“I have held on to so much anger, but I will let it all go just to see her face once more.  She may never be mine but I swear to the Allfather I will do anything so that she lives.”

“When she returns, and she will return, you need to tell her that.”  Loki turned back to look at Thor, many questions in his eyes.

“You do not care for her as I do?”

“Brother I do not understand.  I love her as I would a sister.  There is nothing else between us.  There never has been.” Loki stepped back reading his brother’s expression.

“Never?  You were to be married once.  You took her to your bed, just days after I took her innocence. If there was never more than a brotherly affection, tell me how you would bed her.”  Thor’s brows raised in surprise.

“Bed her?  Loki I never bed [Y/N].  Yes, we were to be bound but spoke that we would not consummate anything until after the rites.”  Loki’s skin went paler than Thor would have thought possible.

“I saw her… I saw you… She left your chambers it was nearly dawn.  You embraced her then she ran off.”  It took a moment for Thor to remember the moment Loki spoke of.  When it came to him, he sighed.

“She was speaking of you, dolt.  [Y/N] came to me crying that she had betrayed our promise and me.  She felt I would cast aside her friendship.  The guilt was eating her from within.  When she explained, what happened and why she wished to end the engagement, there was no anger.  I told her we would figure a way to end it without dishonoring either family.  I wanted to find a way for you both to be happy together.  She wanted to be with you, brother.”  The words stabbed through Loki’s heart cleaving it into so many pieces. As he stumbled backwards, he mumbled.

“I called her a whore…”

“Muddy Waters”

The lovely @squeakowl offered to let her first smutty one-shot be featured on this blog so here it is! It’s also on Ao3 if you’d prefer to read it there and to get give this lovely writer some kudos

“Hey Cat!” Maggie’s drawl broke the silence, and Catherine Baker dropped the feather she had been trying for the last ten minutes to affix to the shaft of one of her arrows. The feather was warped, and she didn’t have enough glue, so she very much needed to make the repair work. But some other time, because it was starting to irritate her, and her work always got sloppy if she got frustrated. She couldn’t afford sloppy when her arrows were all that stood between her and starvation. Or being walker chow.

With a sigh she picked it up off her lap and set it aside for the moment. “What, Maggie?” Cat tried to keep her annoyance out of her voice.

“T-Dog found a little lake in the woods, and it looks like it’s thawed. Cold as hell, but safe. We’re all gonna go in pairs so we can get clean. You coming?” Cat was immediately on her feet. It had been a long, uncommonly cold winter, which, despite the fortuitous fact that cold seemed to slow walkers down, had resulted in most of the group being reluctant to strip down and partake in any sort of bathing. Consequently, they all smelled almost as bad as the walkers. You got used to it, though.

“Definitely, I’ll put all this away and meet you by the cars?” Maggie nodded and disappeared out the tent flap. Shortly after, Cat wandered out of the woods and into the clearing with the cars, with her quiver, bow, and knapsack stuffed with relatively clean clothing, some towels, and a bar of soap. Her dark curls where clipped back, framing her pale face.

Hades looked out towards his kingdom, it was dying, and the people were on the verge of a revolution. He needed a way to make sure that not only they wouldn’t but remain loyal enough to fight for him.

“Your Highness, Azuma and Zancrow are back!” A servant announced.

“Bring them in,” He ordered. He was in no mood to be disappointed today. He heard the doors open and close with the sound of footsteps on the rich red carpet.

“Did you get the wings?” He asked, not even turning to acknowledge the two men.

John had walked into the counselor’s cabin already regretting his summer employment decision.  But as he pushed back the door, you were there in all of your beauty.  Head thrown back, your Y/H/C hair in lazy waves, and your laughing filled the room.  He knew, without knowing your name, without having said a word to you, without even having to think, that you were the one.  And he would have been damned if he was going to let you get away.  So, he introduced himself, and it was the start of something beautiful.

Telescopes in Hawaii have obtained new images of Jupiter and its Great Red Spot, which will assist the first-ever close-up study of the Great Red Spot, planned for July 10. On that date, NASA’s Juno spacecraft will fly directly over the giant planet’s most famous feature at an altitude of only about 5,600 miles (9,000 kilometers).

Throughout the Juno mission, numerous observations of Jupiter by Earth-based telescopes have been acquired in coordination with the mission, to help Juno investigate the giant planet’s atmosphere. On May 18, 2017, the Gemini North telescope and the Subaru Telescope, both on Hawaii’s Mauna Kea peak, simultaneously examined Jupiter in very high resolution at different wavelengths. These latest observations supplement others earlier this year in providing information about atmospheric dynamics at different depths at the Great Red Spot and other regions of Jupiter.

The Great Red Spot is a swirling storm, centuries old and wider than the diameter of Earth. Juno will use multiple instruments to study this feature when it flies over it about 12 minutes after the spacecraft makes the closest approach to Jupiter of its current orbit at 6:55 p.m. on July 10, PDT (9:55 p.m. on July 10, EDT; 1:55 a.m. on July 11, Universal Time). Juno entered orbit around Jupiter on July 4, 2016.

“Observations with Earth’s most powerful telescopes enhance the spacecraft’s planned observations by providing three types of additional context,” said Juno science team member Glenn Orton of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California. “We get spatial context from seeing the whole planet. We extend and fill in our temporal context from seeing features over a span of time. And we supplement with wavelengths not available from Juno. The combination of Earth-based and spacecraft observations is a powerful one-two punch in exploring Jupiter.”

Orton collaborated with researchers at Gemini; Subaru; the University of California, Berkeley; Tohoku University, Japan; and elsewhere in planning the recent observations.

The observers used Gemini North on May 18 to examine Jupiter through special near-infrared filters. The filters exploit specific colors of light that can penetrate the upper atmosphere and clouds of Jupiter, revealing mixtures of methane and hydrogen in the planet’s atmosphere. These observations showed a long, fine-structured wave extending off the eastern side of the Great Red Spot.

On the same night, researchers used Subaru’s Cooled Mid-Infrared Camera and Spectrometer (COMICS), with filters sensitive to temperatures at different layers of Jupiter’s atmosphere. These mid-infrared observations showed the Great Red Spot “had a cold and cloudy interior increasing toward its center, with a periphery that was warmer and clearer,” Orton said. “A region to its northwest was unusually turbulent and chaotic, with bands that were cold and cloudy, alternating with bands that were warm and clear.”

TOP VIEW….This video shows Jupiter as revealed by a powerful telescope and a mid-infrared filter sensitive to the giant planet’s tropospheric temperatures and cloud thickness. It combines observations made on Jan. 14, 2017, using the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii.
The filter used admits infrared light centered on a wavelength of 8.8 microns. The video includes interpolated frames for smoother apparent motion. The instrument used to take this image is Cooled Mid-Infrared Camera and Spectrometer (COMICS) of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s Subaru Telescope on the Maunakea volcano.

CENTRE VIEW….This composite, false-color infrared image of Jupiter reveals haze particles over a range of altitudes, as seen in reflected sunlight. It was taken using the Gemini North Telescope’s Near-InfraRed Imager (NIRI) on May 18, 2017, in collaboration with the investigation of Jupiter by NASA’s Juno mission. Juno completed its sixth close approach to Jupiter a few hours after this observation.
The multiple filters corresponding to each color used in the image cover wavelengths between 1.69 microns and 2.275 microns. Jupiter’s Great Red Spot (GRS) appears as the brightest (white) region at these wavelengths, which are primarily sensitive to high-altitude clouds and hazes near and above the top of Jupiter’s convective region.
The GRS is one of the highest-altitude features in Jupiter’s atmosphere. Narrow spiral streaks that appear to lead into it or out of it from surrounding regions probably represent atmospheric features being stretched by the intense winds within the GRS, such as the hook-like structure on its western edge (left side). Some are being swept off its eastern edge (right side) and into an extensive wave-like flow pattern, and there is even a trace of flow from its northern edge.
Other features near the GRS include the dark block and dark oval to the south and the north of the eastern flow pattern, respectively, indicating a lower density of cloud and haze particles in those locations. Both are long-lived cyclonic circulations, rotating clockwise – in the opposite direction as the counterclockwise rotation of the GRS.
A prominent wave pattern is evident north of the equator, along with two bright ovals, which are anticyclones that appeared in January 2017. Both the wave pattern and the ovals may be associated with an impressive upsurge in stormy activity that has been observed in these latitudes this year. Another bright anticyclonic oval is seen further north. The Juno spacecraft may pass over these ovals, as well as the Great Red Spot, during its close approach to Jupiter on July 10, 2017, Pacific Time (July 11, Universal Time).
High hazes are evident over both polar regions with much spatial structure not previously been seen quite so clearly in ground-based images
The filters used for observations combined into this image admit infrared light centered on the following infrared wavelengths (and presented here in these colors): 1.69 microns (blue), 2.045 microns (cyan), 2.169 microns (green), 2.124 microns (yellow), and 2.275 microns (red).
The Gemini North Telescope is on Maunakea, Hawaii. The Gemini Observatory is a partnership of the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Chile.

LOWER VIEW….This false-color image of Jupiter was taken on May 18, 2017, with a mid-infrared filter centered at a wavelength of 8.8 microns, at the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii, in collaboration with observations of Jupiter by NASA’s Juno mission.
The selected wavelength is sensitive to Jupiter’s tropospheric temperatures and the thickness of a cloud near the condensation level of ammonia gas. The Great Red Spot appears distinctively at the lower center of the planet as a cold region with a thick cloud layer. It is surrounded by a warm and relatively clear periphery. To its northwest is a turbulent and chaotic region where bands of gas that is warm and dry alternate with bands of gas that is cold and moist.
This image, taken a few hours before Juno’s sixth close approach to Jupiter, shows the detailed atmospheric structure of the Great Red Spot and its surroundings that the Juno mission will encounter on its seventh closest approach to Jupiter on July 10, 2017, Pacific Time (July 11, Universal Time).
The instrument used to take this image is Cooled Mid-Infrared Camera and Spectrometer (COMICS) of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s Subaru Telescope on Hawaii’s Maunakea peak.

Best of 2016 - Quoddy Head

Last summer, I took a couple longer day trips away from Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park.  My Favorite was probably to Quoddy Head State Park and the West Quoddy Light.   Located in Lubec, Maine, on the border to New Brunswick, Canada.

This is at the western Edge of the Bay of Fundy whith the highest tides in the world (up to 16 m difference in water height between high and low tides), and some dramatic cliffs as a result. I’m getting sidetracked, but you can geek out about it here if you want.

So while i was at the mouth of the bay where the tides are not nearly as dramatic as they get further North, it was still more than Im used to seeing in Bar Harbor. It was low tide when I got there, and stayed through sunset and the milky way rise.  Here are my favorite images from that day.

Bat City

Don’t know a lot about Battery City (my specialty lies out on the zones), but one thing I’ve always wondered is whether or not it’s completely inland.

Looking at the location of the Mojave National Preserve and Four Aces (location of DD video filming), I think Bat City could easily be LA’s evolution. Take a peep:

Four aces is under 100 miles from LA as the crow flies, and that’s pretty much the Western edge of the Mojave. Believable? Hopefully. I like the idea of a blank white city with the black ocean lapping at her sterile fringe.

Anyways. There’s some food for y’all Danger Days writing whores. P.S., Image 1 was taken by me.

1. the fruit of a citrus plant, as an orange.

Hesperidium ultimately derives from the Greek noun Hesperídes (the plural of the adjective hesperís “western”), the daughters of Night or Evening who guarded the golden apples that Gaea, the goddess of the earth, gave to Hera at Hera’s marriage. It is uncertain whether the “golden apples” were apples or a kind of citrus fruit, especially the orange. The golden apples grew in a garden at the western edge of the world (the same location as the Elysian Fields). The Greek noun and adjective hésperos (dialect wésperos) “evening, evening star, Venus (the planet), (the god) of evening (i.e., death)” is closely related to Latin vesper “evening, the west.” The Swedish botanist Linnaeus (1707-78), alluding to the golden apples of the Hesperides, gave the taxonomic name Hesperideæ to the botanical order that contains the genus Citrus. Modern botany and chemistry use the combining form hesperid- “derived from citrus fruit.” The suffix -ium is used in scientific terms modeled on Latin. Hesperidium entered English in the 19th century.

“As I was carefully filing the new postal arrivals alphabetically in the paper shredder, I noticed, amongst the profusion of catalogues that hawked everything from bird feeders to monthly deliveries of sundry drupe and hesperidium, there was an unsolicited little journal…”

Mostly Mute Monday: Lifting The Cosmic Veil

“Thousands of years ago, a massive star near the end of its life exploded in a type II supernova, leaving behind a black hole at its center and sending its outer layers across the surrounding space. Some 1,500 light years away and 5,000–8,000 years later, that debris is 90 light years across. While the entire structure — the Cygnus Loop — is visible in the radio, infrared, ultraviolet (atop) and X-ray, the brightest visible feature is on the western edge: the Western Veil (or Witch’s Broom) nebula.”

Every century or so, possibly even more frequently, a supernova goes off somewhere in the Milky Way galaxy. While the explosion itself is only visible for a few months, the remnant sticks around for many thousands of years. Despite the thinness of the bubble walls — just one part in 50,000 of the remnant’s radius — occasionally a fortuitous alignment allows various knotty wisps and tendrils to be seen by our own eyes where the remnant is edge-on to us. Hubble imaging reveals tremendous details, including the science that the fast interior gas could travel from the Earth to the Moon in just 15 minutes!

nedstarkswhatever  asked:

susan pevensie (you totally had to know i'd ask more than one :D)

Ten random headcanons about Susan Pevensie:

1) Susan is a great one for making lists — she’s never far from a pen and paper, so she can jot down her ideas. The daily running of the country of Narnia fell mostly to her. Her siblings all had other responsibilities, but Susan was the one who kept track of food stores, made plans for her people for winters, listened to the Narnians stories when they came to her seeking assistance or advice, and took care of her people during wars, when they’d shelter in Cair Paravel, and took in refugees who came to Narnia for asylum. She was always very organized and could tell you exactly what you needed to know about anything and everything.

2) Susan’s favorite sweet is chocolate, the richer the better. She loves anything chocolate - warm, creamy hot chocolate in front of the fire on a cold night; sweet, smooth chocolate ice cream on a sweltering day; bars of spicy chocolate from imported from Calormen; the thick, rich fudge that Lucy makes her as a treat; and the chocolate brownies she remembers her mother making, back in England.

3) Susan was the worst of all her siblings at horse riding during their first year in Narnia. It took a Talking Horse named Laleeh and several months of very strict lessons, to get her comfortable and riding like she’d been born in a saddle.

4) After the Rabadash mess, Susan married in Narnia, the only one of her siblings to do so. She married a son of the Duke of Galma, Willem. He was a nice man, but she didn’t love him, but he was the best match for her — she didn’t have to leave Narnia to be queen to another kingdom; instead he was her consort. She had three children, Taron, Vionnet, and Caleb, and she raised Peter’s daughter’s with a dryad, Jessamine. These four were left behind when the Pevensies went back through the wardrobe, and took the four thrones of Narnia. Susan found herself 13 years old again, and without her children, and she never got over that loss.

5) Just because she’s called The Gentle doesn’t mean she won’t kick your ass if she has to. :D

6) Susan is both brave and smart. There’s the bit in Horse and His Boy about how she doesn’t ride to the wars, but that’s because she’s home at Cair Paravel, defending it. She designed modifications to the shooting galleries on the castle walls, so that multiple archers could shoot from the same arrow slits, giving the effect of a rain of arrows on the attackers. Susan also is the head of all the archers in the Narnian army, in charge of training them to her standards.

7) Susan is the true diplomat among her siblings - she entertains all the visiting ambassadors and heads of state, and has drawn up treaties and trade agreements and helped broker peace in various wars. That was how she met Prince Rabadash - and it wasn’t that Susan was taken in by his charm and good looks, it was that she was impressed with his intelligence, and liked the way he took her seriously, and wasn’t just interested in her looks. Of course, he proved himself unworthy in the end, and Susan was ever regretful of the grave mistake she had made, and mindful that people were killed for her foolishness.

8) Susan thinks she’s the least of her siblings — Peter is magnificent and a charismatic leader, Edmund is brilliant and cunning, and Lucy is valiant and beloved of the Narnians. What’s gentle compared to that? And so many people compliment her and comment on her beauty that she thinks that’s all they see. It works in her favor, as people underestimate her, just judging her as a pretty face. But it’s one of the reasons she pulls away from Narnia.

9) One of Susan’s hobbies is gardening, and she’s very good at it. She loves visiting farms all over Narnia, speaking with the Centaurs, and the Fauns and the Dryads and the Moles, learning all lore they know (Lucy was the healer in the family, with the cordial, but Susan understood herb lore and healing, and was known to to be and excellent nurse). In fact, when she returns to England from Narnia, the first time, one of the things she enjoys the most is working in the large gardens at Professor Kirke’s home. Her love of growing things was well known during the Golden Age, and it was rumored that one of the reasons Susan accepted Rabadash’s invitation to visit Tashbaan was so that she could see the glorious gardens in the palace of the Tisroc.

(okay, last bit behind the cut because it got long!)
