“Everything we do, every thought we’ve ever had, is produced by the human brain. But exactly how it operates remains one of the biggest unsolved mysteries, and it seems the more we probe its secrets, the more surprises we find.” - Neil deGrasse Tyson
When I was reading The Hidden Oracle I realized something I’m not sure how to put it into words, it’s so easy to explain it in spanish but I have a hard time explaining in english, but I’m gonna try my best.
Trials of Apollo is a complete new saga, it’s different than Heroes of Olympus because that saga was more connected to PJO. But TOA? It’s a new beginning, it’s for a new generation of kids, it’s the start of another era, Percy and his friends, the original campers, they are no longer at camp, it’s the time of a new generation of campers, inside the book and outside the book.
Reading TOA is a bittersweet experience and I can say the reason of that is all the small explanations Riordan had to add to the books, we know who is Paul, we know Tyson is a cyclops and Percy’s brother and we definitely know who Annabeth is, but the new readers? The ones whose first touch to the Riordan world is this book? They have no idea of any of that. They are the new campers, they are the ones who are gonna grow with Meg and Lester and Kayla and Austin and the new batch of campers the same way we did with Percy and Annabeth and Clarisse and Silena and the others.
Having Percy at the start and the end of this book is Riordan’s way of Percy passing the torch to Lester. This is not his story anymore, he has grown up, he is off to college, his era of being a hero is done. Percy is now on his way to becoming a legend and it’s Lester and Meg’s turn to be the heroes. Sure, Percy is not going to disappear off the saga, it’s Riordan we are talking about and Percy is his third son, but his role is the same role Chiron had on the PJO saga Percy is the mentor now, no longer the kid who needed help. And for me, a girl who sees Percy as my hero, Percy who helped me when I needed someone the most? Is absolutely heartbreaking but at the same time I can’t help but feel happy for all the new kids who are gonna have Lester as his Hero. Because this is just not a new saga, this is a new saga filled with all types of representation to little kids who are gonna read this and see that some campers have two dads, maybe just like them, or look! Apollo likes boys and girls! just like me! All the representation this book has and this saga is going to have just makes my heart so incredibly full and warm.
And this is why reading Trials of Apollo is so bittersweet to me.
I love the foster sibling au! I was wondering if it was still when Percy/Piper was a demigod or not because maybe then Tyson could get to meet Piper? He'd be such a good big brother to her perhaps! Anyway have a good day :)
still not sure about the au, but this idea was just too cute to pass up. tyson and percy would be the BEST big brothers.
“Recognize that the very molecules that make up your body, the atoms that construct the molecules, are traceable to the crucibles that were once the centers of high mass stars that exploded their chemically rich guts into the galaxy, enriching pristine gas clouds with the chemistry of life. So that we are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically and to the rest of the universe atomically. That’s kinda cool! That makes me smile and I actually feel quite large at the end of that. It’s not that we are better than the universe, we are part of the universe. We are in the universe and the universe is in us.” ― Neil deGrasse Tyson
Kenny: I’m an asshole *goes out of his way to too sweet babies/children* *coos at animals* Kenny: I’m not trying to be likable
*interacts with fans on twitter* *is actually a super kind loyal nerd* everyone:
Aww but you guys, I really want the old gang and the new gang to be family. Grover making some amazing vegetarian chili with Piper in the Mess Hall (”Is this… uh, G, is this half a soda can?” “That’s just what it comes in, you don’t have to eat it. Actually, I’ll take care of that, hand it over.” “Hey, no, get your own!”) Juniper sitting with Nico near that quiet grassy stretch near the trees, teaching him how to busy his shaking hands by twisting the delicate stems of flowers into crowns.
Reyna and Clarisse hanging out in the armory, dusting, reorganizing, sharing trade secrets and favorite ways to completely mess up a dude. Also? Clarisse has so many embarrassing stories about Percy. Reyna’s never laughed so hard in her life.
Dakota and Travis and Connor wreaking havoc–triple the trouble, triple the, uh. Trouble. They’re in trouble. Chiron’s coming and they should probably run. Frank lining up a shot at the archery range, holding the tension in his arms, breathing in, standing steady, and–”Hey, so, I heard you stole my little brother’s job over in New Rome?” His shot goes wide, and Thalia laughs. “Let me show you how it’s done, kid.”
Rachel and Hazel listening to old jazz albums, humming along together and sharing an easel, just covered in paint and giggling. Butch helps them make stained glass sculptures that dance and glitter in the wind. Tyson and Leo as partners whenever there’s a game of Chicken in the Sound; Leo’s got skinny little arms, but nobody can knock Tyson down. “We are the champions!”
Reyna and Annabeth sitting together on the beach, listening to the waves, soaking in the sun. There’s not much they need to say–and the press of their shoulders speaks loud enough, anyway. Percy and Jason facing off in the arena, a clash of titans that somehow ends up in a ridiculous dance-off. Piper and Thalia sharing earbuds and singing dramatically at one another. Will and Hazel tearing through the forest together, unlikely Capture the Flag partners, small and silent and deadly. Frank and Clarisse racing up the climbing wall. “No cheating, little brother!”
Just a big cross-country family. Late night Iris messages. Postcards sent from around the world: Love from yet another death-defying quest, wish you were here! Orange and purple tye-dyed shirts. E-mails and selfies and road trips and slumber parties, sharing drinks and eye-rolls as they hover near the buffet during Official Olympus Celebrations. Trading stories and keeping secrets and knowing one another’s scars, the violence that cut them deep, the exact touch to ease a nightmare. Stolen hoodies and kisses to cheeks and warm hands to hold, a solid weight to lean against, and too much laughter, always.
