18 Morning View Drive

Coast Hills, CA

Then, exactly an hour and thirty minutes later:

7 pm.

Those were the only things Harry had texted you. Just the address.

“I don’t even know if I want to go anymore,” you whined, looking at your phone once more before tossing it on the bed. “He clearly hates me and doesn’t want me to go.”

“I thought you told me he said you could though!”

“Only because it sounded like he had to! His sister was practically forcing the words out of him.”

Renny cringed. “Sister…Yeah I’m sorry, I’m still not over it.” You groaned at the reminder and she sighed in response. “Okay listen, just be yourself! Try not to hate him.” You felt your eyebrows rise higher than hairline.

“And this is coming from a girl who loathes him more than her entire being?”

She rolled her eyes. “I just think he’s an entitled asshole, but you clearly don’t otherwise you wouldn’t be going to the dinner. Now, nude pump or suede bootie?” She held up the two shoes she was gracious enough to let you borrow and you bit the inside of your cheek. You did think he was an entitled asshole, but… you were curious. So undeniably curious and how many girls could say they went over to a family dinner at the Styles’ house? Not that that was your primary reason for going but…

“Uh, Y/N?” she prompted.

“Bootie,” you said quickly, snapping yourself out of further self-analysis.  You weren’t sure if you liked the boy, but you were definitely… interested. Renny went to the closet and came back with two dresses.

You shook your head.

“What do you mean?”

“They’re a little…fancy.” You bit your tongue, not allowing ridiculous to form. You shook your head.

“Yeah it’s a family dinner. Jeans will be fine,” you reasoned. You plucked your favorite denim from the drawers and Renny gasped as if you’d smacked her across the face. “And a t-shirt,” you added with a smirk. She gasped louder and clutched her chest.

“No no no no no. No!” She raised her finger to you, stalking to the closet again, the cocktail dresses abandoned to the floor. “If you’re wearing these booties you’re at least wearing a blouse. God, who are you?” She plucked a peachy top and a blazer from the inside of the closet, but you snatched the blazer from her hands and put it back on the hanger, opting for the cream sweater instead.

“I want to be comfortable, not looking like I’m going to a business meeting ya dingas.” She snorted at the term and you pulled her in for a hug, clinging to her for a moment. She always seemed so soft and you weren’t sure if it was the Victoria’s Secret body lotion she used or if she was just blessed with naturally smooth skin.

“Renny?” you mumbled against her chest, arms still securely wrapped around her.

“Yeah?”

Your mind raced with hundreds of questions. What were you doing? Was this absolutely stupid? How do you know if you like someone?

“Your boobs are comfy,” you finally sighed. You knew she couldn’t possibly give you explanations for any single one of those things. She wasn’t exactly a love guru, but she was entirely the best at texting and the art of flirting.

“Thanks. Niall thinks so too.” You squeezed her tighter before it registered what she’d said. “Gross,” you mumbled, letting go with a laugh.  You only let her put the bare minimum makeup on you and she was just finishing up with a coat of mascara when there was a knock on the door. She stopped.

“I thought you said he wasn’t going to pick you up.”

You shook your head. “He isn’t. I’m driving.” Renny paused, listening, as if she’d be able to hear what was going on just beyond the door. The mascara wand was set on the bathroom countertop and she crept to the door. You weren’t under any illusions that he would swing by your place beforehand so you weren’t going to bother wasting precious energy on “what-if”s, though your heart still picked up its pace in expectation. The door creaked open at the last swish of the mascara wand.

“Niall?”

Expectations you didn’t want in the first place fell when you heard her voice raise in pitch. Of course it wasn’t Harry.

“What’re you doing here?”

“Thought I’d stop by.” His satisfaction at having surprising her was evident in his smug tone and you tip-toed out, not having had a proper one-on-one with Niall since the night of the party.

“You alone?” he whispered to her.

You saw Renny shake her head before you took a step out. A bit of guilt hit you thinking about the spontaneous kiss, but it was so long ago. I mean, you were going to Harry’s house tonight and Niall just came for some one-on-one time with Renny. At this point the kiss just seemed…a bit irrelevant. Renny faced you as if to gesture “see! Not alone” and his blue eyes focused on you as if nothing had changed. But then they did.

“Oh, hey Y/N, what’re you doing here?” he shrugged and shifted his weight. Renny was oblivious to the awkward shift.

“Um, I live here?” you crossed your arms, brows furrowing a bit.

He thought it over but for a second before he shook his head, lips quirking up in their innocent schoolboyish charm. “Right. Must be tired or somethin’.”

“Or somethin’” Renny teased. Niall poked her sides and she twisted out of reach, only leaning back again to smack him playfully across the chest.

“Alright love birds, I’m headed out. I’ll see you later.”

“Bye then,” Niall said, arm already sneaking around Renny’s waist. She mouthed an “OMG” to you at his display of affection while you tried not to vom. But when the door closed shut you couldn’t help but think about how natural it seemed for his arm to wrap around her waist.

—–

“OH GEE, THANKS for putting on your BLINKER - not. ASSHOLE!” you shouted, almost wishing your window was down and that the pompous senior citizen wearing ray bans at night could hear you. Since you were a decent and intelligent human being you put on your blinker and switched lanes, trying to follow Siri. Grandpa was driving a Porsche and he cut you off only to go 5 miles per hour. Your 1990 Chevy Cavaleir was driving faster than that and he thinks he can cut you off just because he has a better- you exhaled hard through your nostrils.  No. He wasn’t worth it.  You’d left in plenty of time, 30 minutes early actually, even though it’d only take about 20 to get there.

The only problem was your phone was verifiably ancient and your navigation was the slowest thing known to man. Once you’d gotten off the freeway, you’d made three wrong turns because your navigation was being ditzy and not telling you how close 600 feet was. And now the entitled drivers of Coast Hills decided you’d be okay with them cutting! you! off! Your hands squeezed the steering wheel a little too tight.

The ocean hugged your side on the highway for another five minutes, but each glimpse you tried to steal to it was futile. It was dark, an expansive pitch-black body stretching as far as your eyes- well, couldn’t see. It left you with a chilling feeling as you turned up the winding hills to the mansions waiting at the top. They were nestled all along the drive up, though hidden by hedges and various gates, and at the very tops all you could see were their lights already glistening, making the hills twinkle with light. Perhaps tonight they could see the water better from their perch above, but a part of you doubted it. No matter which way you tried to look at it, darkness somehow refused to be penetrated.

But you bet it looked gorgeous when the sun came up.

In 200 feet, make a right on Coast Hills Drive.

“Shit,” you cursed, quickly getting in the right lane and ignoring the honk of a horn. You didn’t have time to put on your blinker and as soon as you slammed on the accelerator to turn, you were slamming on the brakes. The iron gates were intimidatingly high and the guard that hopped out of his security room didn’t look amused. A mounted sign read “Coast Homes” behind a trickling waterfall that fell against a stone wall and massive palm trees stood beside it. And then there was you.

A knock on your window practically had you jumping out of your skin.

“Are you lost?” the guard asked. It looked as if his mouth was already open to give you directions, hands raising to point you someplace else, but you shook your head.

“No, not lost.” And his mouth closed at your words, hands quickly dropping to his sides and confirming your suspicions.

“Are you here to see someone then?” he prompted.

“Harry. Uh, Harry Styles.” A slight buzz ran through you saying those words. You were here to see him. You were actually invited to the Harry’s house. Oh god, what if you saw his bedroom?

His eyes narrowed a bit at the name.

“I mean, I’m here to see his family?” you suddenly clarified. As if it were necessary. As if he wouldn’t believe that you were here to see him alone. It didn’t make it much more believable though.

“What’s your name?”

“Y/N.”

He looked to the back of your car to check the license plate and you felt a twinge of annoyance. “Pull up then.” He used two fingers to beckon you forward before quickly jogging to the security room. You stopped closer to the gate and he scrolled through the computer with a furrowed brow, clucking when he found your name. “You’re here.” But it sounded like “wish you weren’t.” The heavy mechanics of the printer and a dull screech sounded as something printed, and he plucked a sheet of paper from the machine, holding it out to you.

“This is your pass. It’ll last until tomorrow in case you spend the night so don’t worry about tickets or anything like that as long as this is properly displayed on your dash.” He tapped your windshield as if you weren’t aware where your dash was located and you smiled.

“Thank you, it’ll only be for a few hours- tops.”

He nodded and then, as if you were old friends and he was admitting you into a secret club of his, said quietly, “Their visitors don’t usually last too long.” He straightened up instantly, his moment of gossiping weakness vanished with his once-again professional posture. He gave you a nod. “Have a good night!” The gate opened and you called out a quick thank you before entering the most brilliant display of wealth you’d ever seen.

Lawns were perfectly manicured as you passed, some opting for Mediterranean fashions and others expansive Spanish villas with imported tropical plants. Most cars you assumed were inside of the mansions in their garages, but the ones that weren’t inside weren’t any less impressive. “Ferrari, Porsche, oh! Tesla,” you muttered. It was like all the fancy cars you’d ever seen in passing on the highway had the same destination. Here. You stopped counting how many you saw on your hand when you got to 14. And the houses… they were the largest you’d ever seen. They were more like hotels than mere houses.

You’d seen glimpses from below, and recalled the many times you’d stare up at them dreamily on late night cruises to get back home from work, the lights beautifully transforming the hilltops and making you feel like it was an early Christmas. From below you seemed to forget how massive they would be in person.  How they hinted at lives being lived just out of reach. Staring at them up close now, you somehow felt they were even more so.

Make a right on Morning View Drive, then, in 500 feet, your destination is on your right.

You swallowed hard despite yourself as you turned right, suddenly thinking that Renny’s idea of a dress wasn’t that ridiculous of an outfit. But it was too late now, especially when you drove down a street just as manicured as the rest, but somehow seemed wider. The streets alone…They were about twice- no, three times the size of your own in width. And the houses were separated far from each other, far enough that one property easily took up the space of four large houses. You tried to zero in on the numbers along the houses – only to realize they were hidden. By gates. More gates? What were they hiding in there, the Crown jewels?

Your destination is on your right.

Your body jolted forward as your twitchy legs hit the brakes too hard and your car started drifting forward again as your foot relaxed.

Another jolt to stop before you ran into the mailbox.

You couldn’t see a number, but you didn’t think you had too. Forget the other houses - this was the largest home you’d ever seen, fitting for how well known the Styles family was. It was a Spanish Mediterranean style mansion with golden lanterns adorning windows and balconies…and this was just what you could see from what was rising above the iron gate surrounding the property. It sat prominently in the middle of the street, both intimidating and more striking than any of its neighbors, and the largest too – your gaze ran all the way down the gate; it took up the rest of the street until the end of the hill where it’d drop off into a deep valley and eventually run straight into the ocean. You’d seen that view from the highway a thousand times, but it was different to be on the other side of it now. You knew the Styles were rich, but you didn’t think they owned an entire coastal hilltop.

You awkwardly repositioned the car and drove up to the callbox, but paused, looking to your purse hesitantly. Should you just call Harry on his cell? You rolled your eyes and leant out to press the little call button and the buzz that instantly droned in the air made your hand recoil in a snap and left your mouth suddenly very dry. This was real. This was happening.

Awesome.

You swallowed hard, trying to convince yourself you shouldn’t peel out of his driveway and drive straight back home to Renny and your ducky pajama shorts.

The droning stopped, and a long high-pitched beeeeeep sounded, which triggered the gates. There was muffling on the other end of the line as the iron gates started peeling back, and you could’ve sworn you heard a voice say, “Is that her?” Your hands were mildly shaking as they reached to put the car back in drive, from fear? Excitement? Admittedly, a bit of both.

You drove up the cobblestone drive through a yard lush with tropical plants that had to have been imported, but your gaze was quickly stolen by the resort-like property you’d be entering at any moment. Columns stood tall and the encased chandelier emitted a warm glow where the intricate glass doorway stood. The click of your booties walking along the cobblestone seemed loud as you walked to the front and tentatively raised a hand to the door. You knocked softly for fear the intricate glass would break, though it did seem expensive and thick enough…

You looked back to the only car in the driveway – yours. Their cars were probably hidden and well-kept from the elements in one of the three garages you’d parked in front of. The dent you’d received from last year’s fender-bender was still obvious even in this dim lighting. The crickets seemed peaceful tonight.

“Welcome!”

You turned sharply at the high-pitched voice to see Gemma. She held a full champagne flute in her hand, and leant a bit on the dark wood rim of the door, looking every bit as beautiful as you’d remembered – more so, now that you saw the cocktail dress she was wearing.

“Hi!” you mirrored her enthusiasm.  She ushered you in, not noticing it was a mere mask for how totally unprepared you felt. “Was I, uh, was this like a formal occasion?” you whispered, eyes darting down the long hall. The blank stare she gave you made your anxiety about being the most awkward human bean rise to new levels.

“What, formal?” Gemma looked baffled for a moment. “Oh! No, not at all. All my other clothes are dirty and I’ve been refusing for Sven or Eli to do them.” She took in your lost eyes. “The house maids- or, housemen? Not sure which,” she clarified. Her eyes quickly darted over your cardigan and jeans. “You look wonderful by the way. Dinner’s only just begun, I promise.” You smiled warmly at her, suddenly becoming aware of the chatter and silverware scraping the plates. A grand piano sat in the entrance, and there was a surprising amount of marble for the Spanish exterior of the house. Chandeliers lined the tall ceilings all the way down and some orchestra music you weren’t sophisticated enough to name filled the air.

She started walking down the hall, and you trailed behind her, your heart rate accelerating from the anticipation of seeing Harry in his home. It sounds weird, but you’d never been able to picture him at a proper house, with a family, with a childhood really… just the fraternity.

“Y/N is here!” She called out just as she turned the corner. Seven pairs of eyes locked on you and you instantly tugged on your sleeves. Especially when you only recognized two. Harry sat beside the head of the table, his eyes locked on the plate of food, and a surprise. Sorority Viv was beside him. You wanted to scowl, but you tugged the sleeves of your sweater down instead.

“Hi,” you put up a hand and braced a smile.

“Well we didn’t think you were coming,” a woman said. Her blonde bob looked strangely familiar and Harry’s eyes snapped to her when she spoke. Even from here you saw them harden.

“Oh..uh,” you looked down at your watch. 6:55. “I’m sorry, I thought dinner started at 7.”

“You’re fine dear,” the man at the head of the table assured. Mr. Styles you assumed. He had kind features and softened wrinkles by his eyes when he smiled like now. He was like a George Clooney and, even though he had gray hair, he was tan and somehow it was fashionable. But something was off.

“It was meant to be 6,” she noted, and her pearl necklace jostled as she leant over and placed her empty glass of champagne on the table and beckoned you to the seat in front of Harry. “Well come in! Please,” her voice sounded sincere but the thin smile radiated about as much warmth as a frozen potato. Gemma squeezed your shoulder as she passed and sat at the next empty one a few chairs down. You pulled yours out next to a fair-skinned boy with light dull brown hair and he offered his hand. It was like porcelain, so it was a little unnerving when you grasped it and found he was actually warm.

“Charlie,” he said, and you realized he was the boy you saw kissing Gemma.

“Y/N,” you smiled. You looked across to Viv and did the same, and she returned it, if a little unwilling. She looked to Harry again, who’d busied himself more with food.

“Hey,” you said, but it was into the void, his eyes elsewhere probably looking at the thousand dollars worth of décor – your embarrassment was swallowing you up until Viv nudged him. He looked up, eyes distant, and they locked on your own for only a second.

“Hi.”

It was mortifying.

“So-” Charlie cleared his throat- “You guys are mates then I reckon?”

“We’re not sure what they are,” Gemma piped in.

“What do you mean?” Viv asked, looking to Harry.

“Yes, what do you mean?” Mrs. Styles suddenly halted the conversation at the other head of the table with the couple beside her. Harry’s face morphed into a scowl.

“Gemma,” he warned.

“Mary, please,” Mr. Styles sighed.

“Harry,” Gemma and Mary spoke at the same time.

“So!” Charlie let out a nervous laugh. “The chicken’s really good isn’t it?” He forked another bite into his mouth and you were envious you couldn’t do the same. Just like that, a gloved hand reached down and gingerly set down a china plate with the juiciest piece of chicken and capers you think you’d ever get the privilege of eating.

“Thank you,” you looked back to the kitchen help before he could disappear, black and white uniform and all. “You have a lovely home Mr. Styles. And Mrs. Styles.”

“Oh honey my mother-in-law is Mrs. Styles. I’m Mary, and he is Lionel.” Her voice was bubbly like the champagne she twirled around, but so was her friendly tone – full of air.

“Oh, okay.” You busied yourself with picking up the silverware before stealing a glance to Harry. His demeanor was different than usual, eyes glued to his food, cheek sucked in as he lightly gnawed on it. He was still, but .. sad? No.

…despondent?

“Did practice tire you out?”

His eyelashes fluttered at the sound of your voice and he looked up, lips pursing just the slightest. It was a miracle he hadn’t ignored you.

“No…”- a brief lift of his shoulders, a shake of the head, then- “No,” he repeated, forking a piece of chicken into his mouth.

“Yeah, you have been awfully quiet-OW,” Charlie began coughing and Gemma threw him a glare.

“Harry’s never quiet.”

“And how would you know that?” Harry suddenly snapped to life and the room dropped by ten degrees. She raised the napkin neatly to her mouth before slowly tucking it below her.

She took a deep composed breath.

“Oh please Harry,” her oddly placed laugh made you tug your sweater tighter to your body. “I’ve lived with you long enough don’t you think?”

“Long enough? Yeah I completely agree.” A sarcastic half grin spread across his face and something tugged within you that made you want to kiss it away. You heard yourself thinking and it made you sick. Kiss? KISS??!

You stuffed another bite in your mouth.

“So Y/N what’s the story here?”

You look up, cheeks full. Mr. Styles – Lionel, laughed a bit at the sight and his laugh didn’t make you want to cringe into your sweater like his wife’s. “Sorry darling, I’ll let you finish.”

You swallowed a little too fast.

“What are you studying here? How do you know Harry?”

“I’m majoring in Biology, but we’re in English class together.”

“Biology! I’ll drink to that,” Lionel lit up and raised his flute.

“Lionel’s the best doctor in Southern California.” Mary crossed her heart, and Lionel shook his head lightly.

“She exaggerates.” Her eyes narrowed slightly at his comment, but he continued, “If you ever need an internship or if you want to come visit one day…feel free.” He slipped a hand into his pocket and pulled out an extremely thick, extremely white business card as if it was the most normal thing in the world. “So… just class?” He gestured between you and Harry once more.

“Well, he’s also quite a good soccer player so I’m pretty sure the whole school knows him.”

“I wouldn’t say the whole school,” Harry started, but his eyes were fixed on Lionel and the way he broke into an easy smile.

“So we’ve heard. We’ve seen him play once or twice, haven’t we?” He looked to Mary who nodded. She soundlessly raised the napkin to her mouth again but she didn’t speak. “Yeah, he’s quite good.”

“Really good,” Viv crooned.

“Could you pass the water please?” Gemma asked.

“What?” Mary arched a thin brow.

“The water,” Gemma repeated.

“Water,” Lioinel mimicked the accent and broke into a smile. “You can’t ever leave Gemma, it’s decided. I’d miss your voice too much.”

Something snapped in you. He lifted the heavy vase of water effortlessly and passed it on to her, oblivious of the gears turning in your head. The accent.

Mr. Styles didn’t have one.

And neither did Mary?

“You don’t have accents?” It was out before you could stop it and the table fell silent. It was one of those awful moments when everyone’s brows were squished and slow side glances were given. And a nauseating feeling spread through you when you realized you might have said a very wrong thing. Viv nervously looked to Harry.

“What do you mean?” Mary asked.

Harry cleared his throat. “I mean, technically we all have accents.”

“He’s right,” Gemma said, pointing her fork.

“But you’re…are you British?”

“I am!” Charlie said.

“Yes you idiot,” Gemma nudged him, and Lionel laughed a bit before shaking his head.

“No darling, we’re from here. Born and bred beach bums.” He threw up the shaka sign in true dad-fashion but Mary tipped her champagne flute back.

Harry snorted.

“Never say that again.”

“Why am I embarrassing you?”

Harry didn’t bat an eye.

“Oh come on…Charlie smiled.” Lionel innocently looked over for support, but Charlie’s gaze was locked deep on his chicken by then.

“You’re lying,” Harry shrugged. “You never go to the beach. Can’t be a host that lies to its guest can we?” Harry turned to you and you froze. “You don’t like liars do you? Cause I don’t.”

“What has gotten into you?” Lionel’s voice was breathless, incredulous.

The table fell silent and the two looked at each other from opposite ends of the table. Lionel set his glass down and a tint of disbelief reflected in his eyes.

“I’ve never seen you there it’s just funny to hear you say it,” Harry continued calmly.

“What’re you talking about I took you sailing all the time.”

“I’ve seen pictures!” Viv said, “Oh you were so cute in your little outfits, don’t you remember?” But her voice sounded overenthusiastic, keen to change the subject.

“Sure and how old was I again Vivvy?”

His retort was instant, the question harmless enough, but it was the way he said it that made Viv’s face instantly fall. For a moment, you even felt bad for her she seemed so genuinely hurt. Mary rubbed her mouth with the napkin so hard you weren’t sure if the red on her lips was blood or makeup. Do you speak? Make a mad dash for the door? Sorry, I didn’t sign up to be on an episode of the Housewives - gotta blast! Then you could throw the thumbs up sign to Harry on your way.

No. You couldn’t. You didn’t even dare to breathe right now.

Gemma watched wordlessly, just as much at a loss as you. More so, it seemed, for her mouth open and closed multiple times, but each time it was a hopeless attempt. Lionel rose his brows, took a deep breath, and leaned back. He looked tired.

Harry’s eyes had barely flitted over to yours before retreating again and in that brief moment you looked at him, it’s as if he realized what he’d said. His cheeks flushed, but his jaw was locked.

Okayy, someone woke up on the wrong side of his small fraternity bed this morning. But you’re welcome to come back and live with us. Have your nice king sized bed again…” It sounded like a nice offer but if you listened hard enough you could’ve sworn you detected something sharp.

“Oh funny joke Lionel,” Mary laughed humorlessly, slowly turning to you. “Harry’s always been independent.”

I wanted Gemma to reach out, to whisper a concerned Harry as a warning, because right now his eyes were dark, brewing a storm of blood rain from invisible scars he’d cut open himself. How deep did they run?

“Yes, funny, funny, that’s what we are,” Lionel said, but there was no smile on his face, he was rubbing the corners of his mouth with the napkin and setting it down on his clean plate. “Sorry about this.”

As if Harry wasn’t in the room. As if you didn’t feel as though you were in the most awkward position you could’ve been placed in, plopped in the middle of a tug of war you didn’t really remember signing up for. Were you supposed to be on a side?

“Dinners aren’t usually like this, I don’t know why he’s-”

“I don’t know why we’re having this dinner. Are you done?” Harry asked Viv. Her plate was still full of vegetables and at least half the chicken.

“Actually-”

“Great! Are you done?” He turned to you in all his over-animation, and in his dark green eyes you felt a sudden sympathy. It wasn’t right what he was doing, but he could only be acting out for a reason. Or multiple.

Or perhaps he was a just a selfish petulant boy.

Whatever the reason there was a wild plead in his gaze and you didn’t want to disappoint.

But you were also very much aware of Lionel waiting for your answer.

“If everyone’s done, then I’m done too.” And in fact, your appetite had disappeared.

Gemma seemed close to tears, but she blinked them away and tossed her napkin. “Yes, I’m actually quite tired.”

Charlie halted his fork mid bite and with one look from Gemma he reluctantly put it down.

“Stuffed full actually,” he mumbled.

“Great, well, I’ll grab dessert.”

Mary rose with her napkin but the scrape of Harry’s chair against the wood floors made her do a sharp turn.

“Where are you going?”

He didn’t answer as he headed to the marble staircase, footsteps loud as he jogged up them.

“Let him go,” Lionel sighed, and with it, he shrunk smaller in his chair.

“Harry!” she screeched. But he didn’t answer and with a turn at the top of the stairwell he was gone.

Everyone dispersed after that. Lionel received a conveniently-timed phone call to which he had to dismiss himself into one of the many rooms. Mary headed immediately into the kitchen but she never came back -

And then there were four.

“I’m-” Gemma bit her cheek, folded her hands. “Nevermind.”

“I think I should get back.”

Gemma looked at you understandingly, a sad sort of reluctant smile gracing her face. “Perhaps that’d be best. It was really nice meeting you though, and as much as Harry doesn’t seem to get on with loads of people, he mentioned you multiple times. I thought-” Her eyes got misty again and they glazed over the multiple paintings hanging over the dining table. “Nevermind what I thought,” she looked down to her feet but for a moment before that, her warm eyes had smiled at yours. You didn’t know her, not at all, yet somehow you could tell the warmth behind them was genuine. And you liked her instantly.

“Alright, I’ll just – I’ll head out then. Thank you so much for the dinner, it really was delicious.”

“Thanks for coming,” Charlie offered, swinging his arm around Gemma.

“Guess I’ll see you at school.” Viv appeared beside them and the unexpected head of jealousy showed its face again. Well, not its whole face. Just the tip of its nose as it peered behind the pillars of your heart, because would you really want to spend more time in there?

You were shocked when that tiny part of you said yes.

You were only halfway to your car when you heard Viv shout out.

“Wait!” You obeyed, feet halting as her fast jogging in heels made record time. She let out a breath. “Back there, what you said about the accents, it’s not like it’s a big secret, but um.” Her eyebrows slightly knitted together. “I’m not sure why I’m telling you this, I guess just so you don’t make it a big deal.”

“Yeah. Wait- why, did I make it a big deal? I really didn’t mean to.”

She shook her head, then stopped. Her head leaned slightly to the side and her eyes pinched as she pondered your questioned. “Maybe a little.”

She put her arm around you and steered you to your car.

“Harry’s adopted, it’s not bad that I’m telling you this because they don’t try and keep it hidden or anything it’s just – they don’t advertise it. And most people don’t ask. They just assume long-term boarding school or something. They don’t look into it.”

“Oh. Right.”

Adopted. Of freaking course.

“It was when he was young, seven or something. Uh-” She stopped, perhaps she’d said a bit too much. “But anyway it’s not that big of a deal.” But it sounded like she was trying to convince herself. She looked to you.

“Yeah,” you agreed, “Totally fine. I mean I’m sure his other friends know anyways.”

She smiled then, and stuck you at arms length. “See you later.”

After revving the engine, and drawing up to the gate, you sat there for what must have been a solid twenty seconds, throwing the engine in reverse and then approaching it again. It didn’t move. Shouldn’t this thing be automatic from the inside? You threw it in park and trudged to the front door again, but no one was moving inside the house. You tried knocking. Everyone was gone. Fantastic.

A miracle, one of the garage doors started to open and you walked closer.

“Oh good, I was about to be stuck!” you called out as the doors clicked back, expecting Gemma to return your smile from the other side. But it was dark and no one was there. You did see the shadow of three other cars though. Three very nice racecar material cars.

“Hello?” You called out. You swallowed harshly when you saw two brown booties.

“What’s going on?”

You felt like you should be the one asking him that, but you just shrugged your shoulders. “The gate won’t open.”

Harry stood expressionless before retreating to the back of the garage.

“Wait- where are you-”

The sound of the gate opening shut you up. “Oh, thanks,” you mumbled. You didn’t really know what else to say, and Harry wasn’t exactly making conversation, so you were silent as the clank of your door closed you in again. Back to reality. This night had been a disaster.

The spluttering of your engine lasted longer than usual and you stilled.

Come on grandpa!!!!

You twisted the key again but it was refusing to give you the satisfying thrum when it finally gave. You were so close!! It couldn’t give out now!!!! It could literally break down, say, in a total hypothetical situation that did NOT happen, when I’m trying to avoid human contact after being pantsed in front of hottie toddie physics professor but it CAN’T give out now.

You tried again but it failed.

And you tried again.

And again.

And again.

Harry’s figure approached the car window with a beer in hand and he took a deep swig of it before knocking on the window. You barely heard it above the spluttering but you gave grandpa a moment of silence.

You rested your head on the steering wheel before bouncing up again and rolling down the window.

“What Harry,” you sighed.

“She’s dead.”

“I know.”

You got out and waited, crossing your arms while Harry ran into the garage to check if he had any jumper cables or whatever else he’d need to fix this. At least it wasn’t smoking.

“We don’t have any.” He sauntered over, scratching the back of his neck and looking at the car. “Can stay here if you want.”

“I can call an Uber.” You hit your phone’s lock switch but it was a black screen. DAMN you Renny for hogging the charger before you’d left. DAMN YOU. “Can’t. Can’t call an Uber. Could you call one for me?”

“Are you trying to use me for my money?”

“I- no.” Your mouth parted but it closed again. Was he for real? Was he….kidding? “I can pay you back you know.”

“Lionel won’t hear of it. He doesn’t trust Uber.”

“Doesn’t trust Uber. What is he? A binge-watcher of late night crime shows?”

“No.” An almost smile shone through and you crossed your arms.

“Well I can’t just block the gate.”

“No one’s going anywhere for tonight.” He headed for the garage again. “Come on,” he called back.

“Renny will be worried about me!”

“You can call from our landline.”

People still had those?

“Sh they can hear you these walls aren’t 12 inches thick!!” you whisper-yelled into the receiver. You gave Harry an awkward smile and twirled the cord around the vintage phone. “Mary picked it up at a Parisian market or something. It’s mainly for decoration but they got it hooked up just in case,” he’d said, only walking to the end of the hall to give you some “privacy.”

It was literally from the 1920s. You felt like a vaudevillian actress about to break into song about how she wants to live a normal life but mommy and daddy keep her locked in a tower.

“I DON’T CARE IF THE WHOLE DAMN WORLD HEARS ME YOU ARE BETRAYING YOURSELF IF YOU SPEND THE NIGHT THERE.”

“Renny- ! Oh my- ! Could you just- could you just LISTEN?”

“Let me call you an Uber.”

“Lionel already knows and they’re-” you looked over at Harry who seemed to be distracted by a painting he’s probably seen a thousand times before and you lowered your voice- “Apparently one of the maids is already making my bed.”

“ARE YOU ROYALTY NOW?! Are they going to give you complimentary chocolates in the morning?! Are you going to be giving him complimentary HEAD-?!!!”

“RENNY!”

Harry’s head whipped towards yours, but his lips were still set in his pout. You grimaced, putting your back to him and facing the end of the hallway.

“Now you have me thinking about the wizard’s wand. I literally hate you,” you grumbled.

“You know I’m joking. Well, half-joking. You can stay there if you want it’s just-” she sighed- “What is this, are you guys like dating now? Because the last I heard you were literally running away from him and wanting to punch his face in.”

“He does give off that effect. And no! We’re not-” your voice lowered more- “We’re not dating. My car’s just broken down.

“You keep lying to yourself.”

“I’m not lying to anybody.”

“Keep telling yourself that kid. Because the last time I was with you was when you were literally RUNNING away from him. But you’re going to spend the night at his house. Voluntarily. I mean geeze you’re giving the poor guy a headache you can at least suck his dick.”

She’d hung up before the words even processed.

—-

“This is the living wing, I dunno why they call it that it just makes it sounds depressing.”

“What do they mean by living?” you asked. Each word sounded heavy on your tongue, each sentence carefully constructed. It was weird to be talking with him when he clearly wasn’t in the best frame of mind. When you didn’t know if he’d snap and turn sour all of a sudden.

Though you didn’t think that’d happen. He seemed more sullen to you now more than anything, apologetic maybe, if a word like that could describe him. Think: a toddler after being scolded for something he’s done wrong. Eh? That image seemed to work.

“It’s where my dad keeps his…creatures. Birds, fish, I don’t know I never fucking go in. It’s also where their bedrooms are.” He poked his head around the hallway before muttering, “I guess.”

“Oh okay.”

Your feet stopped following him when you met a tall window. Their backyard was….spectacular. It was dark and the twinkle lights only exposed so much, but there was a very nice long pool, tile patio with sunbathing chairs, and more green beyond it. The all black on the horizon you assumed to be the ocean.

You didn’t realize Harry was behind you until he muttered, “What’re you thinking about?”

“You know I could ask you the same question. Like at least half the time I’m around you.”

His brows squeezed together a bit but a bit of a smirk was starting to form. “I’m not sure I know what you mean.”

“Oh you do. You definitely do,” you started to laugh and back into the window to scrutinize him from afar. Because right now he had a very odd look in his eye. “You’re quiet most of the time,” you said softer. After dinner, you weren’t quite sure what was going on in Harry’s family life. But the longer the adopted word kept being tossed around in your brain and analyzed every which way, you wondered how many different dynamics existed that added or subtracted to their relationship. Take Gemma. How did she fit in? She had the accent too.

So, if you could make him smile by backing up and eyeing him like he was some sort of specimen than so be it. As much as you would’ve killed to see him unhappy a couple days ago, you’d realized you’d been a bit rash to run into conclusions. And yes, you had managed to make yourself look like an utter mentally unstable ass and a half. So you could cut him some slack. The night hadn’t been a nightmare for just one of you.

“Stop it,” he warned. But you started to circle him and you squinted one eye, putting two hands up to frame Harry’s face and the window with the warmly-lit grounds like a director choosing the shot. “Okay seriously. Stop.”

“Nope,” you popped the p, “It’s funny. I couldn’t picture you in a place like this before, but now I can.” You slowly put your hands down and you thought you heard him mumble weird.

“Oi. Did you just call me weird?” your mouth opened in playful surprise. His nose scrunched up at your over exaggerations. He was confused, you could tell. And he was probably being just as cautious as you were, you realized. You didn’t blame him. But he was so close to smiling. Soooo clooosseee-

“S’just weird,” he settled with. And his would-be smile dropped. A little bit of guilt struck you.

“What is?” you began slowly.

“It’s weird that you’re here.” He shrugged. “I don’t know.”

Ouch.

“Why?”

“Because I can’t picture you here.”

His voice seemed shy. He nodded towards the other end of the hall. “Come on, I’ll show you where you’re sleeping.” And he didn’t give you much time to catch up, nor time to feel offended, as his long legs were once again a disadvantage to you.

You weren’t sure how many bedrooms you’d been passing, and to be completely honest, Harry’s explanations of what each room was went a bit beyond you.

“Theatre’s to your right, sun room’s to the left. That’s the library over in there, elevator’s around the bend. Annnnd… here it is.”

He forgot to mention the multiple living rooms you’d been passing which had killer ocean views, or the full-on mini bars. Yes. Bars. As in numerous. You didn’t see much alcohol in them though and you wondered if it had anything to do with Harry.

“I’ll be at the other end then.”

“Of the house?”

“The hall, just there.” He pointed, and looked back at you with a funny look about him. “No sneaking into my bedroom.”

You coughed. “I’m sorry, was that a joke? A poor one but…Are you making jokes now?”

His smile faltered, but it was finally there. No matter how small or pained it looked. His eyes looked to his boots for a second before settling on your elbow, then your shoulder. Then your chin. Or was it-

“Right. Well. I’ll give you something to wear, just- stay there. Or don’t. I don’t care.” Harry turned quickly and disappeared into the last room at the hall. Your eyes grazed the hallway walls. He may not look necessarily enthused that you were there, but in this whole situation you’d felt like an outsider. And you suspected that was exactly what he needed.

Not that you held any pretenses to know what that confusing boy needed.

Not at all.

Or rather, none at all.

None were there to gather dust, to give you a glimpse into what he looked like as a toddler through to the awkward teen years. No family portraits hung. Each wall’s empty space was filled with a landscape painting of the sea, or the cliffs facing the water. Except for the power portrait of the Styles in the center of the home that looked out over their grounds - it was stark of any traces of family existence. The messy bits anyway. And instantly you compared it to your old stained carpets and walls with so many nails in it if you removed all the pictures and unscrewed the nails, you’d be left with hardly a house at all. This felt like someone had come in, staged it for a potential buyer, and that was it. Like if you opened the dresser’s drawer you wouldn’t find anything in it except for another nail or the assembly instruction manual.

You hummed to yourself, peering into your bedroom. A nice queen-sized bed and bamboo flooring. White canopy drapes covering what you assumed to be a window.  The only thing that seemed off was the ceiling. It had stars painted on it. You walked to the center of the room and looked up- there was a name there, inscribed in the center of the biggest star. You sat on the edge of the bed, twiddling your thumbs before wandering over to the ensuite bathroom. It was no less impressive.

A big part of you was wishing to be with Renny right now. Gosh you would’ve paid anything to see her face if she could only see the outside of this house. You never fared well when there was quiet, a lot of it anyway. And in a house this big, it was quiet. A little too quiet. And cold. Was the AC set to 50 or something?

Warm water ran down your face and you briskly turned the faucet off. At least Renny would be able to say “I told you so” tomorrow. Well, not about the blowjob thing. You opened the medicine cabinet to find some toothpaste, or face soap. The last thing you needed was another zit to pop through.

But there wasn’t anything of the sort. No no no.

Pills filled the cabinets. Some with labels, some without. You closed the cabinet. Definitely not toothpaste. Definitely not your business. But who were they-

“Oh my gosh!” your heart flew to your chest.

Mary was sitting on the edge of your bed, silent, hands folded in her lap. Had she seen you? The sudden adrenaline found an escape in an awkward laugh. “You scared me.”

“Oh I’m sorry. Didn’t mean to do that.” She tucked a strand behind her ear and it wasn’t until your hip hit the door frame on the way out of the bathroom that you realized she hadn’t been looking at you this entire time. She would’ve judged you for that blunder. No, her eyes were fixed on the walls, then the ceiling.

Did she need help with something? Were you in the wrong room?

“Is this my room?”

“It’s my youngest’s room.” She looked up again, and her left hand seemed to be a little shaky as she soothed already straight hair behind her ear. You watched her closer and saw her body sway a bit to steady herself when her head lowered. You instinctually looked to the door, to an exit. Harry should be down there. Nerves suddenly held your body like they always do in a situation that’s unfamiliar, in the face of unpredictability.

“She liked astronomy!” She said suddenly, as if she’d just had an epiphany. She walked over to the canopy drapes and peered between them, revealing a balcony as she looked out. “I thought she’d like it. She likes the stars.”

“I bet they’re, uh-” your eyes shot out again- “Beautiful from here.”

She was quiet and she slowly turned to you, pointing to the ceiling. “There. Did you- didyouseeit? There.” She stumbled closer, still in heels, and you crossed your arms tightly, nodding even though you had no idea. You followed her hand briefly. It was the scribble on the wall.

“I picked it,” she said, finger sliding to fall at her heart. “I picked it.”

“Jesus! Mary.” Harry stormed in, a horrified look on his face as he clutched clothes in his hands. They fell to the floor.

“And Joseph,” you muttered.

Harry’s eyes held no humor in them in the brief moment he glanced to you. It was hardly enough time to properly glare. But glare he did. And there was enough fiery gusto in them to realize that now was not the time.

“Jane,” she corrected. “Jane.”

Harry was struck still, and you watched as his eyes frantically observed. But when she was about to sit down again he spoke,

“What’re you doing in here? Y/N is going to try and sleep.”

Mary looked at him, her drunken emotional journey to the past turning sour. Her lips pressed in a hard line and she stood up, swaying a bit when she did so, but the level of composure she emanated was impressive.  She went over to him, passing you silently, and for an irrational second you thought she was going to jump you. Instead, she grabbed Harry’s arm when she was almost out the door. “There were two rooms Harry.” She tried to whisper it, but the alcohol had warped her perception and you heard everything.

She let her hand fall and Harry’s fist clenched as it did.

You were struck dumb, again. This wasn’t your domain, you weren’t close enough to comfort him if that was what he needed and you weren’t brave enough to interject if he needed a good slap in the face. You barely knew him. And the realization of that sunk deeper than you’d ever realized. You can get frustrated because of him, infuriated at him even, but you couldn’t be one to judge. Not when he seemed more miserable here than anywhere else.

“Stay here,” he finally said. And then he was gone, leaving you with a pile of clothes that couldn’t explain the half of it.

You stripped quietly once the door was closed, pulling the oversized plaid button up down that fell to completely cover your hands. It still left you cold, barely covering your bum, but your heart warmed a little at how he didn’t just give you a black t-shirt. You almost stepped over the sweatpants that were there before greedily snatching them up with a smile In your fanciful mind you imagined he knew you’d be cold in here.

Harry never came back. You couldn’t text Renny, or anyone, and you couldn’t be bothered with figuring out how to turn on the tv or to find a channel. So you lay there, looking at the ceiling. You didn’t belong in this room. Mary, even if she hadn’t necessarily said get out, still verifiably creeped you out enough so that you didn’t want to be in this room. You never knew Harry had another sibling. Not that you’d even known about Gemma until yesterday. How many other people knew him, truly? Why were you here now? What would you do if you opened your eyes and Mary was just sitting at the end of your bed again - watching you sleep?  It made your head dizzy and you closed your eyes. If she was there at least you wouldn’t be able to see her. But the scribble in the sky was still burned in your mind’s eye and it had your imagination roaring. You rolled over on your side, pulling up the thin sheet to cover your ear. The wind smacked a palm tree leaf against the balcony window and you jolted in place. You felt haunted, and it wasn’t like the sheet would protect you from anything except for soothing the little toddler in you who still believed that good always won, evil always lost.

This was an expensive home.

With probably more security than the local bank.

You were safe.

But you didn’t feel secure.

Your anxious thoughts continued like pins pricking your stomach until fatigue made it stop. You didn’t know the time when you fell asleep.

And you didn’t know the time when you awoke. The smacking of the palm trees was as bad as ever , and your nightmare had been worse tonight. The same sick one. A house in the countryside, peeling wallpaper that threatened to wrap itself over your hands if you leant against it a little too long, trapping you there when you needed to run from faceless creatures.

You were being watched.

You jolted-to in a cold sweat.

Was it 2 am? 3? You hoped it was closer to 6, to the sunrise. These days you cherished the times when you’d wake up at 4. You tried closing your eyes again, but the sweat soon chilled you enough to where the sheet wasn’t enough. You silently stood, walking over to the cabinets on the far side of the wall. The painted shutter doors squeaked when you opened them. It must’ve not been opened for a while because the paint caused the two doors to stick together and it only gave on the third tug.

What you saw stilled your heart. Because you didn’t find linens or a big fluffy blanket, and if you’d discovered this just a few hours later in the morning you’d probably glance right over it, perhaps it would’ve sparked a moment of confusion maybe. But now, in a big strange house in the middle of the night you surely felt a chill. And then you were booking it out to the hall.

His door was there. Just like any other door. But you paced around it a few times. He was probably sleeping. Should you just go to the downstairs? Just…I don’t know… grab a glass of water? Try putting on the tv? Like a normal person would? You raised your hand, but it fell just as fast. Gosh who were you?!

You couldn’t yell at Harry for being bipolar when you were basically the perfect spokesmodel. You knew why you were standing outside his door. You knew who’d make you feel secure. This was embarrassing.

But the door opened before you had to knock.

“You can come in,” he murmured.

“Oh,” you said, voice barely above a whisper. “Oh you don’t have to-”

But when he opened the door wider you didn’t waste a second in entering.

“So a guy’s never made you come before?” Oak asked with his jaw hanging a bit open.

“Nope,” you said nonchalantly while scrolling through your Twitter mentions.

It was intermission of the second show of the day and you, Oak, Anthony, and Jasmine were all hanging out in Oak’s dressing room, talking about random topics. Now, the topic seemed to be focused on you because you had accidentally let the fact that you had never had a real orgasm during sex slip into the conversation.

“Ever?” Anthony pressed in disbelief, somehow not believing you.

“Never ever.” You confirmed, looking up to see all three pairs of eyes on you. “What?”

“Do you tell them what they’re doing wrong?” Jazzy asked.

“With the first couple of guys, yeah, but after a while, I just stopped because it wasn’t working anyway. I didn’t want to make them feel bad about themselves, so I just started faking orgasms every time. I just finish myself off after they go to clean up or something.” You shrugged.

Holidays with Anne and Robin

WARNINGS: Smut

You woke up in absolute bliss. A messy haired, tanned Harry perched next to you. Huggling the sheets close to his body despite the warm Maldive humid air outside. He groans and tries to find your body that had shuffled away from him in your sleep. “Babe,” He mumbles, his voice raspy from the lack of using it in the past hours. He releases an inner groan and you smile at your long-term boyfriends sleepy demeanour. His hand found your two-dayed-tanned leg and caressed it softly with the palm of his soft hands. Harry always loved the softness of your legs to his palm and would always appreciate them. His head lifted up and soon his green orbs were piercing into yours with lazy blinks. “Morning beautiful” He smiled and nuzzled his head into your belly. You ran your hand through his soft curls that curled around your digits. “Morning” You smiled. A simple get away to the Maldives had been a good idea and now with Anne and Robin in the other room you were happy on your little separate villa in the ocean. “Mmm, so warm today.” Harry mumbles against your skin. You nodded, “I can’t wait to get out into the water.” You smiled. “Think we should do some breakfast first” Harry laughs at your impatience. “Mmmm, and what breakfast would that be?” You smirked knowing where this was going.

Before you could even encourage your boyfriend more, his head ducked under the sheets kissing your tummy and smiling against you. You stared at the straw ceiling, you loved Harry. Your hands went under the covers and you gently massaged Harry’s head as he continued to press kisses all over your body. Then, he placed a kiss right where you needed it making your hips buck up into his face. His face was so perfect. He licked your bud, soft kitten licks making you feel tingles everywhere and anywhere. A gasp escaped your mouth and Harry loved it. You could tell by the little licks increasing and before you knew it his whole tongue laid flat against you and licked upwards making you grasp tightly onto the sheets. “Harry.” You breathed out. Muffled sounds came from Harry but his grip on you legs became tighter and he pulled you closer to his earning mouth. He licked up and down continuously in this ebullience that was him. Your hips raised slightly trying to get closer to his soft pink lips that were making you feel ever so good. But Harry wrapped his arms around your legs and pulled you closer to keep you down. You soon felt this overwhelming power that consumed you. You groaned and soon enough you were all over Harry.

After you’d both slowly gotten out of bed and slumped a soft thin white dressing gown over each of your shoulders you exited your bedroom. You were met by Robin and Anne. “Morning sweet pea’s” Anne smiled. “Made some breakfast, just little bits, fancy anything?” Anne asked. And when she said little bits she was lying. She had pancakes, waffles, fruits, bacon, eggs and you were starving. Harry went and sat on the swinging chair whilst your eyes ranged over the table filled with everything you wanted to devourer. You grabbed some waffles and some strawberries and drizzled some chocolate over the top of the waffles. You went and perched yourself on top of Harry’s lap. He swung you both from to and throw smiling softly at you. “Bet you wish you hadn’t of eaten before we came out” You whispered ever so slightly. His eyebrows furrowed and his lips turned into a smirk. “No need to get cocky missus.” He smiles pressing a kiss upon your cheek. “So what are the plans for today?” Robin asks. “I recon, swimming, eating and chilling. Sound good enough?” Anne smiles. Harry presses a kiss to your cheek and smiles. “Sounds good to me”

You had to admit, you felt incredibly lucky staring at your man who was so undeniably gorgeous.You were too lucky. He laid against the sunbed his not-so-spotty face picking up the rays emitted by the sun. His yellow shorts hanging from his tattooed waist. He look comfy, and cuddly. You wanted to snuggle up right there and then but it was too hot and way to intimate to almost spoon your boyfriend in front of his step-father and mother. You were comfy but cuddling with Harry almost always led to something else. Anne and Robin were chilling next to you and you’d never felt so at peace. Harry seemed to had fallen asleep by the lack of response you had gotten from him. You knew he needed to wake up and you thought what a better way than do it in a refreshing way…

You went inside and took a bowl from the kitchen and walked outside once more and step down the wooden steps to the clear water. You cupped the cold clear cunning water into the bowl and stealthily approached your boyfriend where he lay calm and collective. You smiled before pouring the water over your sun-kissed lover. His body rose in shock and his pupils widened after he realised you had been the culprit. Suddenly he got up and picked you up and cannonballed into the Maldives waves. Once you arose from the water you found Harry and wrapped your arms around him trying to dunk him under. His arms circled round your waist and brought you closer. You could hear Anne and Robin laughing behind you upon the hut base. Harry kept you from squirming and brought you closer. Your noses brushed together. Harry closed his eyes and droplets of water ran down his cheek that were resting upon his lashes. “I love you.” He whispered. You smile at Harry and place a kiss upon his lips. “I love you too”. The best holiday you’ve been on.

A/N: I originally planned this to be just angst but then my thirsty ass ended up incorporating some smut into this. Everything in italics are flashbacks.

Beautiful.

The only word that could come close to describing your mere presence as he watches you weave your way through the round tables. You’re being pulled into an awkward hug every second by guests as they try to figure out how to overcome the barrier that is your dress without ruining your hair and makeup. He watches as you converse animatedly with the guests, some of whom he does and does not recognize.

You tuck the strands of hair that frame your face behind your ear, only to have them fall back to where they were just seconds ago, but he gets a brief view of your face. Your cheeks are stained with a light pink tint, your lashes expertly curled in a way that showcased the eyes Jungkook fell in love with, face properly contoured – a term which Jungkook unwillingly learned after having to watch too-many-to-count make up tutorials with you – and your lips, smothered in god knows how many different brands of lipsticks. The end result of four hours of makeup was nothing short of perfection. Jungkook mentally curses the stupid rules and superstitions that forbid him from seeing the bride before the wedding day.

You and Jungkook have inevitably stuck with each other like glue for a long epoch of time, that when you do tell people that you were best friends with him for 15 years, it was hard not to laugh at their reactions that usually consisted of jaws at the floor or sky rocketed eyebrows along with constant questions that you always had the answers to before they were even asked. But, you have to admit, you never answered the question that was along the lines of; “haven’t you fallen in love with him yet?” because apparently, Jeon Jungkook was the man of everyone’s dreams and you curse yourself copious amount of times that you were undeniably one of the many people of ‘everyone’.

Transigen. You didn’t know what that company actually did, they said cancer research, but something didn’t seem right.

You only worked in an office or had to get files from A to B, so you never got to see any actual patients.

But you had needed a job and this was a job that paid surprisingly (and suspiciously) well. To be honest, you would’ve taken anything, because you were two months behind on rent and just really needed the money.

You had only really talked to a few nurses and through some small talk you tried to get information out of them but they were tight lipped, but the look in their eyes told you all you needed to know.

Something was off. Big time.

You had wondered many times within the past couple months if and when you and Spencer would sleep together. He had only mentioned sex once before to you and it was an innocent comment about his experience– with heated cheeks he admitted that he had nearly none, he had only slept with one person one time. You assured him it was nothing to be ashamed of because it truly wasn’t, plus it was none of your business who he had chosen to share his intimate moments with before he had been with you.

You had more experience than him in bed but had only had a few partners since you preferred to have a strong emotional connection with the person you were sleeping with. Save for the few one night stands here and there, which always contributed to your loneliness rather than getting rid of it.

You were currently on the couch in your apartment, Spencer’s body was pressed up against you as his lips feverishly moved with yours. The music that you’d turned on earlier was long forgotten but it still echoed in the back of your head as you heard the meaningful lyrics of the sweet song.

Spencer’s hands were cupping your cheeks as his tongue poked out of his mouth and touched against your bottom lip. He’d always adored your lips, the shape and color of them along with the way they moved when you kissed him or when you spoke.

He was sat upright with his back pressed against the couch but his head was turned to the left side where you were. In an attempt to get closer you pulled your knee to the other side of him, straddling his lap without breaking the kiss. You ground your hips down on his for some friction without it even being intentional but he didn’t seem to mind, and the moan that escaped his mouth and fell between your lips proved your assumption correct.

Part 1 / Part 2/ Part 3 /Part 4 Part 5 /Part 6

Your eyes were dancing around the Avengers Tower, taking mental notes of every detail. The whole thing was so beautiful and high tech. You had been there once or twice before for work purposes and had never really left the lobby. But this was going to be your home now and you didn’t wanna miss a thing.

Learning that Bucky would be your mentor almost made you turn down the offer. But before opening your mouth to speak, the promise you had made yourself in much darker times popped in your head, which was to never let a man’s opinion about you dictate how you’d live your life. Not again. You really wanted this job. Helping make the world a safer place was the reason why you’d become an agent in the first place, therefore being an Avenger would mean an opportunity to actually make the difference. Bucky had the right to not like you and you wouldn’t argue with that, but you wouldn’t let it ruin your career.

“Friday, take us to Tony’s lab, please.” Maria broke the silence, entering the elevator with you.

“Right away Miss Hill. Welcome to the Avengers Tower Agent Y/L/N.” You were surprised and thrilled to hear the legendary A.I talking directly to you, which made you giggle shamelessly.

“Thank you, Friday?” you replied with an amused, unsure tone.

Maria laughed at your reaction and, wrapping you in a side hug, added: “You’re gonna love this place.”

The elevator stopped on a ridiculously high floor and you both were greeted by a loud AC/DC music. By what you had heard about his music taste, you were about to meet Iron Man. As you entered the room, a “Wow” slipped from your lips, admiring the advanced machinery and robotics surrounding you. If you were astonished by the high tech of the building so far it was because you had never been to Tony Stark’s lab.

“You’ve seen nothing yet, dear.” You were startled by the music going down and the man himself approaching aiming a wink at you before directing his attention to your colleague “Miss Hill, long time no see, how is our favorite Live Action version of Captain Hook?” Maria sighed and you chuckled at his remark, winning another wink from the Iron Man who seemed proudly pleased with your reactions “And this is…?” he pointed at you.

“Hi, Mr. Stark, my name is Y/N Y/L/N, it’s such an honor to meet you” you grinned, extending your hand to him.

“Oh, so you’re  Furry’s girl, then? I’ve heard a lot about you sweetie. Welcome to our humble home, it’s yours now too, so cut the Mr. Stark crap, call me Tony.”  He responded, shaking your hand and smiling wildly. “Have you got the instructions for your training already or seen the place where you’re staying?”

“No, well, Mr. Furry gave me some information, and then Maria and I came straight to your lab, so…”

“Friday, call Barnes, please? And Wanda.” He didn’t let you finish and you felt a twist on your heart at the first name he mentioned, making the comfort you were feeling with Tony Stark’s welcoming presence diminish a little. You may have expressed it on your face, because he added, waving you off:

“Don’t worry, Junior, Barnes barks but doesn’t bite…well, mostly. And Wanda is the sweetest Sokovian witchy you’ll ever meet” You were able to form a tight smile and nod at your new favorite avenger.

“Well, now that introductions have been made, I’ll leave you guys, if you need anything Y/N, don’t hesitate on calling,” Maria spoke giving you a hug while you thanked her. She waved at Tony before parting.

Once you two were alone, the billionaire turned his back to you typing on a touchscreen that popped from his pulse watch “Friday will you take Y/N’s measurements, please?”

“What?” you yelled with wide eyes, covering yourself with your hands as an instinctive and pointless reaction.

“Calm down, Junior, I just wanna work on something for you, but I’m really trying to avoid any new sexual harassment lawsuits, so I can’t take them myself” He honestly tried to reassure you, still focused on the screen in the air.

You were about to give your protests when you heard the elevator door opening, as you turned your head you exchanged gazes with the pair of blue eyes you thought, until that morning,  you would never have to see again. You straightened your posture and cleared your throat, trying to ignore your heart jumping inside your chest.

Along with him there was the Maximoff girl you had only seen on television, she had a wide beam on display for you. As they came closer, the surprised expression on his face became evident. You guessed he didn’t know you would be there.

“Tony,” he spoke directly to the other man in the room, taking his puzzled look from you.

“Barnes,” Tony replied turning his front to the three of you, never looking straight at Bucky. Maybe you were wrong, but sensed some weird tension surrounding the two men’s greetings. “This is Y/N Y/L/N” he continued.

“I believe we’ve already met, right Miss Y/L/N?” You wanted to punch yourself for feeling vulnerable under the sarcastic tone that only you seemed to notice.

“Sergeant Barnes,” you nodded a stoic greeting, maintaining your hands tangled behind your back.

“To what do we owe the pleasure of your visit?” he asked, folding his arms across his chest fixing his stare on you. Again, only you seemed to notice the bitterness on his question, which he was disguising with a forced smirk plastered on his face.

All of a sudden you weren’t so sure you should be there. You felt tiny and bare under his eyes, like every single little flaw of you was evident to him and everyone else in the room. He’s not going to ruin this for you, He’s not going to ruin this for you… You were fighting against yourself to gain dominance over your own damaging feelings.

“Fury’s nominated her for the spot on our team. She’s the one you’ll be tutoring.”  Tony’s words made the smirk that Bucky still leveled at you, the one that unsetttled you so much, slowly fade. He seemed shock for a quarter of second, then put on a stern expression on his scruffy face.

“Oh, that’s awesome, welcome to the team Y/N, congratulations!”  Wanda hugged you passing by an incredulous, yet impassive Bucky standing between you two.

“Well, you still have a lot to do before you actually become an Avenger. You’ll go through training with all of us, but I’ll be your main instructor. You report to me now. We’ll start today. Be at the training room at 4pm.” He was looking directly at you and talked with no pauses or intonation, so fast and emotionlessly you could have mistaken Bucky Barnes for one of the robots in the lab. You let out a relieved sigh when he excused himself and took the elevator down.

You didn’t miss Wanda and Tony exchanging glances and found some inner strength to try and discharge the tension that Bucky’s reaction had left in the air “Thank you so much Wanda, I’m so excited to get to know you, I’m a great admirer of your work.”  Her face lit up at your honest statement and a smile was back on her lips. Good. The last thing you wanted was any kind of questions that could force you to explain where you knew Bucky from.

“Awww, I’m so happy to see former Junior and new Junior getting along.” Tony enlaced his arms around the shoulders of both of you making you two chuckle in response. He looked at Wanda “Will you show Y/N around?” She happily nodded and Tony tapped on your backs “Ok, so go, Daddy, has work to do.”

~~~
You and Wanda clicked pretty well, she was answering every doubt you had and showed you the most essential areas of the building. The more you knew about the place and the Avengers routine the more you felt a sense of belonging and comfort. Once you both reached the residential floor where you’d be located you saw that it was composed by a very well equipped shared kitchen, a common lounge with entertainment for all kinds of tastes and the individual flats.
You were fascinated to notice that all your belongings were already settled in your place.  As you were starting to find out, this was one of the many perks of being teammates with Tony Stark. You loved your flat, it had a neat decoration and the furniture was unpretentious and comfortable. But what really captivated you was the balcony with the most mesmerizing view of New York. You couldn’t help but wonder how beautiful it would be at night with all the city lights on.
After some more chatting, Wanda excused herself out so you could rest to your first day of training. But relaxing was everything you didn’t do. The so very recent changes in your life had brought out vivid and different emotions in you. You were undeniably excited, but despite really trying, couldn’t stop worrying about how your fresh history with Bucky would play out, especially since it hadn’t escaped from your attention how his presence affected you back in Tony’s lab. Laying on your new king size bed, you wondered how you and he would possibly be capable of working together and whether you’d beat how low you felt around him to let the confidence required by an Avenger show up.
Those thoughts of uncertainty were still protuberant on your mind when you got ready for your first session of training with Bucky. You didn’t really know what it would consist of, so decided to go with some comfy yoga pants, sneakers and a black tank top. You pulled your hair up in a ponytail and when you stepped out of the door, walked into your best friend and her boyfriend, both in exercise clothes, getting out of a room across from yours that was probably his.
“Y/N, Oh my God!” Sharon beamed at your sight and made a beeline to you with arms opened. “I’ve heard the news, this is amazing, you deserve it so much!” She held you in a tight embrace.
“Welcome Y/N, I’m really happy that you were Fury’s first choice, I can’t say that I’m surprised though!” The Captain greeted you with one of his gigantic smiles and a bear hug when Sharon let go of you.
You wholeheartedly thanked them before turning to the blonde woman, “Sharon, a quick word?” nodding to the interior of your apartment. She shrugged to Steve and followed you into the room telling him to wait for her at the gym.
“I’ve been trying to call you since yesterday, now I know why you never answered. You still have to tell me how was your night with Bucky.” She smirked at you at the last words while you were dragging her to the seat by the end of your bed.
“Yeah, about that…” You spilled out at her the details of the encounter, putting some emphasis on Bucky’s rudeness, but didn’t mention the phone call you’d overheard. You really didn’t need a pity look or a reassuring speech from your very biased friend.  “… so I said I needed to go to the toilet and took off.” You finished your narrative at an agape Sharon.
“You what????” She yelped and reprimanded you: “Don’t you think you overreacted a little? Abandoning the date without a goodbye? I understand it wasn’t going that well, but…”
You got annoyed with the comment and snapped: “Overreaction or not the fact is the guy is a douche, I don’t understand why you thought that might work. I was doing just fine by myself until you meddled and pushed me to something I didn’t really wanted and obviously wasn’t ready for. Now I have this amazing chance to actually do some good in my life and this whole situation you’ve put me through might ruin it. Thank you so much.” You snorted and looked away from her, wrapping your arms around yourself.
She opened her mouth a few times but said nothing, seemingly lost for words at your harsh ones. You watched her by the corner of your eyes and sighed, running a hand on your face realizing you were unfairly tossing your frustrations on her. “I’m sorry Shar, it’s not your fault, is just that… I’m really panicked about all of this, is too much…this job… I don’t know if I can handle…” Your voice trembled with your honest confession and you hid your face with your hands, leaning your elbows on your thighs.
You felt the sting of Sharon’s customary slap on the back of your head, making you look at her again. “Of course you can handle it, you’re a motherfucking Avenger.” You gesture to protest, but she held your hands into hers “No, you are, screw training, trials, or whatever, you always had been an avenger, just didn’t have the title. You were chosen for a reason, and you’re going to stay right here.” She hugged you and you tightened your arms around her, realizing how much you needed those words.
“Thank you Shar…” Tears were falling freely on your cheeks, but her comfort really made you feel better.
“You don’t have to thank me, I’m just telling the truth.” She waited for you to calm down a little and insisted, carefully, so you didn’t have another outburst “But, you know? I still have this feeling that you and Bucky are indeed a good match…”
“That’s it,” you let go of her embrace and clapped your hands twice, getting up to end the subject “I’m going to the training room, are you coming?” You headed to the door, cleaning the tears with the back of your hands. Sharon raised her hands in defeat and followed at your heels.
~~~

At the gym you waved at Steve who just nodded, since he was really engaged on lifting a bar with an uncountable amount of weight. Sharon wished you good luck and climbed on one of the treadmills. You glanced at the watch and realized you were 10 minutes late. Shit. You saw that your trainer was already at the sparring room that was divided from the rest of the gym by a glass wall.

He had his back turned to you, removing some kettlebells off of the mat. You cursed your eyes for lingering more than necessary on the evident lines of the muscles on his back through his absurdly tight white tank top.

“I hope you understand, Agent, that being on time is one of the most important requirements to be an Avenger, missions won’t simply wait for you to comb your hair or whatever unimportant thing you were doing” He turned to face you and once again your goddamn eyes betrayed you by fixating on his displayed metal arm. That was the first time you’d seen the famous appendage exposed in person. How was it possible that it’s millimetrically symmetric to the flesh one?

He cleared his throat bringing you back from your attentive analysis of the brawny figure in front of you. “Ahm, I’m sorry Sergeant, this won’t happen again” You tried to sound tough to hush your insecurities’ voices starting to scream inside of you.

“I certainly hope so,” he scolded, staring at you with an unfriendly expression that surely wasn’t helping your attempt on remaining calm. “Today I want to check some of your hand to hand combat skills, your attacks and defense moves.” His lips twisted in a cynical smile before continuing “Although I have a feeling we’ll end up focusing on your defensive.”

You tilted your head slightly and raised an eyebrow, feeling a growing heat starting to boil your blood. So he was making fun of you? You just nodded at him, trying to not give your annoyance away. You might not be good with dates- or romantic relationships in general for that matter- but you were in your element now and even if you would never be able to physically overpower him, you knew you could definitely make him sweat a bit with your moves and tactics.

“Ok, let’s start, get in position, Agent” He took a short distance from you and straightened his posture high in a clear effort to intimidate, which you followed on queue after removing your sneakers and climbing on the mat.

You started circling around each other. You were clenching your hands and jaw, waiting for him to make the first move, your plan was to let him take the lead first so you could have the opportunity to study his movements and fighting style. He had a predatory gaze on you and it took every bit of strength inside you to not look away. You were expecting his first attack anytime now, but certainly weren’t ready for what came next:

“I think I’m gonna have a lot of work to teach you some manners, Agent… Abandoning a guy in the middle of a date like that…” He talked in a low menacing tone and the reference to the night before made you lower your guard, as he noticed that he flew towards you, grabbed your arms and spun you around locking you with your back against his chest, keeping a tight grip on your wrists, one crossed on the front of your waist, the other encaged between you two. You could feel his hot breath in your ear… a shiver started running down your spine… but you wouldn’t let him dominate you that easy.

“Maybe I had somewhere better to be, Sergeant.” You spat back and felt his hold on your wrists loosen a bit, so you took the chance to abruptly unlock yourself from his grasp and took your distance. You both went back to the initial position, circling each other. The audacity of his comment and attack made your eyes fume and your breathing speed up in short harsh pants, but you tried to focus on the physical battle.

A smirk was gracing his features and didn’t take long for him to run to you for a second time, aiming a punch at you, but you were now expecting it and managed to squat to avoid the hit before taking his legs out from under him with a sweeping kick.

When he got up you were kind of amused to see his face contorted in a mix of rage, shock and something else you couldn’t quite decipher.  He groaned and went for you again. You two engaged in what seemed a beautifully synchronized dance of flying fists, dodges, spins, kicks. Between strikes you kept exchanging accusations about your previous encounter…

“What kind of person chooses an Indian restaurant for a first date, anyway?” Punch

“The ones with good tastes…” Dodge, “What kind of person arrives 40 minutes late for the same first date and doesn’t apologize?” Slap

“Thank God I got there late…”Roll, “or else it would be 40 more minutes of rambling talking!” Kick

“At least one of us is able to actually form words.” Jump, “Are you familiar with this concept? Words?” Punch

You kept this dynamic the entire time and from what you noticed he wasn’t aware that you had listened to his conversation and you chose to leave it unmentioned. You didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of knowing much he’d hurt you.

The adrenaline provoked by the combination of his words and the heated combat itself was boosting you forward to face your opponent, but you were sweating liters and it was getting hard to catch your breath. You knew you couldn’t keep up much longer. As you were pretty much aware, even if you weren’t the easiest target, your strength and vitality were no competition to the super serum.

Just like you’d anticipated, the final move came from him. Your balance was stolen by the hit of his legs on yours, making you fall with your back to the mat. He quickly settled his weight upon you, straddling your waist and pinning your arms above your head with a strong grip.

He had his face too close to yours. So close that the tips of his locks were tickling your cheeks. You observed his wide eyes staring deeply at yours and his teeth grinding while he was holding you tightly to keep you in place like his own life depended on it. You were both a panting mess, skin shining from sweat and your heartbeat drumming in your ears. You struggled to leave the position, but stopped fighting your way out at the same time his features started softening…the grip on your wrists became almost gentle making it easy for you to get out if you wanted. With your eyes glued on his blue ones, you could swear you saw his gaze dropping to your mouth and his face slowly leaning closer and closer, when the sound of clapping and whistles took you away from your little daze.

You turned your heads to follow the sound and spotted Steve and Sharon, applauding the scene through the glass wall. You felt the urge to punch your friend in the face when you glimpsed her sporting a little victorious smirk and caught the words she was mouthing directly to you.

“Good Match.”

A/N : Surprise!!! I am back! After months of procrastinating here is the long awaited part II! Thank you for all the praise for part I and I hope you guys like the sequel just as much. It’s not edited properly and there might still be mistakes but I really just wanna get this out! Comments and criticism are very much appreciated. :))

Part I

For the first time since you’d found out that you could see strings, breathing felt easy.

You felt like you were floating, grasping onto the air with your fingertips, flapping your arms as if wings had been stitched onto the flesh like seams to keep you airborne and for fleeting moments, you embraced the sensation of liberation

You couldn’t deny the way your cheeks ached in a way that was anything but unpleasant and your hair in those brisk moments spiralled behind you in its frenzy of locks and screaming with sovereignty.

Despite the ruins you were the cause of, despite the flames you’d set alight and left unattended, despite all things destruction that you were the cause of- oddly, you’d never felt so free.

You’d never felt so close to the air.

Spider

pairing: Steve Rogers x reader

summary: you live across the hall from Captain America, but you never really talk to him. When you find a giant spider in the bathroom, that all changes.

warnings: big spider

Friday had finally come to a close, and you were relieved to be able to take your shoes off by the front door of your apartment. The clock under the tv read that it was only 9:20 pm, so you decided to have a glass of wine before settling in bed. It didn’t take long for you to down the whole glass, especially since your day consisted of your boss making rude remarks and low-tipping customers. Your eyes began to droop, and you decided it was time to find your way under the sheets. But low and behold, the moment you were finally comfy your bladder decided it was party time. After a few curses, you got up from the little burrow you’d made in the bed. You flicked on the bathroom light, and squinted momentarily.

A giant black spot on the wall made you stop in your tracks. You grimaced as you recognized the spot to be a spider, and it seemed to be staring back at you with it’s many eyes. Putting a hand on your mouth, you attempted to prevent a scream from ringing out across the apartment complex.

Being an independant woman was something you were used to from living in the city for so long, but your nerves were shot as of late. There was no way you were getting close to that damn thing, not just because spiders are gross, but you didn’t know if it was venomous or how fast it would be. The idea of running to a neighbor seemed childish, however, your neighbor wasn’t just some random citizen of New York. You’d only seen him in the hall a few times, and he was nice enough to ask you how your day was going, and even bring you a few misplaced packages. Maybe he’d help you in this dire situation of getting that damn spider off the wall. Not only that, but he would probably get a kick out of it as well. After practically running out of the apartment you called home, you knocked on the door across the hall from yours.

A deep voice rumbled from behind the door with a slight accent, “Who is it?”

You coughed, trying to rid your voice of any shakiness, “It’s your neighbor, Y/n,” The man was silent behind the door, “I need some help with a slight emergency.” There was a few moments of silence, and then you heard the chain being dragged away from the lock behind your neighbors door. The man who opened the door had an unfamiliar face, and he squinted his eyes at you. You’d only ever seen Steve going into the apartment, so you were about to walk away in fear him not being home.

Then, he quickly yelled over his shoulder but still managed to keep his eyes on you, “Steve, some short girl is here!” You smiled at the light jab, since it was obvious he was playing around. While he stood in front of you waiting for Steve, he pulled his long brown hair into a loose bun.

Captain America came into view from one of the rooms down the hall, and the man with long hair moved out of the way, “Can I help you?” He looked down at you with worry, and you knew you were in good hands. Even with a look of concern on his face, Steve looked as handsome as could be.

Instead of explaining how stressful of a week you had, you cut straight to the point, “I know you don’t really know me, but I have a really big spider in my bathroom.” You pleaded, “Can you please kill it for me?” A pathetic smile lifted your cheeks. Who else could say they asked Captain America to kill a spider for them? But it’s not like you were being dramatic considering the arachnid was bigger than your fist.

Steve bit back a laugh and nodded his head, “Sure, show me the way.” He took a step out of his apartment, and then added, “Oh, and please call me Steve.” The man with long hair was right behind him the whole time Steve was speaking to you at the front door, and finally waved the two of you off as you walked back across the hall. The whole situation made you giggle, you’d never spoken to Steve before, but here you are asking him to kill a spider in your apartment. Walking into your apartment you suddenly realized that it was a hot mess, so you immediately jumped to apologize and tried to explain that you were barely ever home. Steve just laughed and said, “Don’t worry, Bucky makes more of a mess than you do.”

You pointed through your room, with a shaky grin, “Okay, the bathroom is to the left, and the spider should be on the wall straight ahead when you walk in.”

Steve took a few quick strides towards the bathroom, and not even a half of a minute later you heard the toilet flushing. He came back out of your room, and smiled as he entered the living room, “The threat is gone.” His hands rested at his hips.

With a little shake of your head, you sighed, “Thank you Steve, hopefully I can sleep tonight and then enjoy my day off Sunday from this crappy place.” You could tell Steve was trying to look you up and down with each nod of his head, so you simply explained that you were a waitress and that your boss had been a dick as of late.

“Maybe I’ll stop in one day, shake your boss up a little.” Steve charmingly smiled, “If you need anything else or want to go get coffee or something, here’s my number.” He grabbed a marker, and wrote on the mini whiteboard on your fridge. Your heart was pounding a million miles every second as he closed your apartment door on the way back to his own. It felt like you’d just been thrown for a loop, but for some reason you were undeniably excited.

This was only the beginning for you and Captain America.

You were presenting in class the first time he infiltrated your vision with silk-like strokes of vivid colors. An odd twinge in your heart erupted and it felt as if someone had a grip around your throat, your legs giving in beneath you, your hands shakily finding their way to the table for support. As if through a blur, you heard your name being called out and you looked upon the class as specks of brown hues emerged, specks that hadn’t been there before.

It was a desperate attempt to stay upright as you focused on steadying your breath, the vivid hallucinations making it all that much harder when the specks took shapes and your heartrate boomed. Adrenaline was pulsing through your body and you saw the terrible posture, the slouched spine and the coffee hues that had turned to soft strands of hair. It was a boy, but he wasn’t from here. You saw the books in front of him, faint colors of a room surrounding him, an entire different reality set around his frame. Your lungs were fighting for air and you were irrevocably wavering when a choked scream finally fell from your lips and the figure turned, the widest set of scared eyes looking right back at you.

Seconds after that, you fainted.

Don’t Touch My Stuff! (TG/AP)

              Danny loved to mess with his older sister’s stuff, much to her frustration. He would always hide her belongings just to watch her freak out. He got a kick out of her storming around the house and yelling “don’t touch my stuff, you little brat” as she looked for whatever he took from her. One day, she grew fed up with Danny’s behavior and decided to teach him a lesson. She had a goth friend who was super into witchcraft and hexes, and she asked her to come over and lay a trap for her brother. She knew he would try to hide whatever new item she flaunted around the house, so she had her friend place a hex on a new red hairclip and wore it around the house, making sure Danny saw her wearing it. She placed it right on her dresser before leaving the house to hang out with her friends, laying the perfect trap for Danny. Little did she know that the curse was going to change both of their lives forever.

              Danny waited until his sister was gone before sneaking into her room. He saw the hairclip sitting alone on her dresser. He picked it up and examined it, wondering what to do with it. Deciding to tease his sister a bit, be placed it in his hair and pulled out his phone to take a selfie. It clicked satisfyingly as it clipped his hair, but before he was able to snap a pic and send it to his sister, he felt a wave of dizziness come over him. He looked in the mirror above the drawer just in time to see his hair begin to grow. In a matter of seconds, his hair had turned jet black and grown down to his waist. His scalp tickled as his hair grew long and silky. For a second, he thought he was hallucinating, but a moment after his hair stopped growing he could feel his body beginning to stretch. With a sudden burst, he grew nearly six inches in height, stretching his boyish clothes and revealing his maturing midriff. He watched himself in the mirror as his abs tensed up, becoming toned and athletic. With a few cracks, his shoulders and hips expanded outwards, tearing his already stretched clothes. He wanted to scream for help, but he knew that his sister was gone and his parents were still at work.

              His tattered clothes drifted off his rapidly maturing body, revealing the smooth, pale skin that now covered his body. He looked over his new frame, realizing that he looked strikingly feminine now. In fact, the longer he stared at his changing body, the more he noticed how much he was beginning to look like his sister. The revelation made him want to puke. He had always seen girls as some strange creatures from another world, and the idea of becoming one was not sitting well with him. Before he could ruminate on the idea of being a girl more, he suddenly felt a tingling sensation coming from his nipples. He watched his chest in the mirror as his nipples began to expand, growing larger and darker, and beginning to protrude uncomfortably from his chest. He felt the cool air of the room making his nipples harden, and while it seemed utterly wrong, the feelings coming from his chest were undeniably pleasurable. He suddenly let out a girly moan as he arched his back and pushed his chest forward, watching in horror as two large breasts began to grow beneath his new nipples. He knew that older girls had boobs, but he had always been grossed out by them. Now he knew that he was definitely becoming a girl, and while the idea of living in a girl’s body made him want to cry, he couldn’t help but moan louder as his new breasts swung freely off his chest. The mounds of flesh on his chest finally stopped growing, allowing to regain his composure as the pleasure coming from his chest subsided. He was breathing heavily, still disgusted by the weight hanging off his chest, but also noticing how much his voice sounded like his sister’s. The thought of becoming his sister sent a shiver up his spine, causing him to panic and plead to an empty room to make these changes stop.

              “Please, I don’t want to be a girl! I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have taken Stacey’s stuff! I don’t want to be Stac- EEEYYYYYY!” he squealed in his sister’s voice as he felt his butt beginning to inflate. He turned around and faced his ass to the mirror, staring at the cute peach shape it had taken. He squeezed it briefly, noticing how soft and round his butt cheeks were now, but quickly stopped as he realized that he was touching his sister’s body. This all felt wrong, and he would do anything to make it stop, but before he could do anything else he suddenly felt another tingling sensation coming from his chest. He began to sweat as he realized that girls have different parts between their legs. He didn’t know what was about to happen, but he watched his crotch in terror as his boy parts began to retract into his body. He felt his insides shifting around, making room for a bunch of new organs that he didn’t even know the name of. With a final slurp, he was left with a pair of fleshy lips between his legs and an alien dampness that called for attention. He didn’t want to touch the new thing between his legs, but the feelings it was sending through his body couldn’t be ignored. It felt itchy, but in a weird, exciting way, like it needed to be filled. Reluctantly, he reached a feminine hand down between his legs and began to rub the moist lips where his member used to be. A flood of pleasure coursed through his body as his fingers made contact with his new sex. He knew it was wrong, that he was a boy, but these feelings were unimaginable. He screamed in pleasure and plunged his fingers deep into his new clit, rubbing the fleshy cavern between his legs and the pleasure continued to build. His eyes rolled into the back of his head as he lost himself in pleasure. He could only hear his moans and the schlicking sounds of his hand sliding in and out of his new sex. He could feel his face shifting and cracking, becoming a perfect replica of his sister’s, but he didn’t care at this point. The only thing he cared about was the ecstasy coursing through his veins.

              A sudden crash of a door closing shocked him back from the brink of orgasm. He regained himself and looked at his body, disgusted with his actions, but reluctantly wanting more. He looked at himself in the mirror, realizing that he was now an exact copy of his sister, and realized he had to cover himself up before whoever just entered the house saw him naked. Before he could find clothes to put on, he heard someone rush up the stairs and burst into the room. It was Brian, his sister’s boyfriend. He dropped his bookbag on the floor and smiled upon seeing the naked girl standing there.

              “Hey, baby. I see you were too excited to wait for me,” Brian said, removing his shirt and revealing a chiseled masculine body. His olive skin glistened in the sunlight, and the sight of his attractive physique immediately made Danny’s heart beat faster. He felt the dampness growing in his crotch again, but didn’t know why. He wanted to run and hide, but Brian was blocking the only way out.

              “Whoa, uhhh, I don’t know if we should…um…” Danny stammered as he frantically searched for words.

              “What’s wrong, Stephanie? Your sister is out with her friends and your parents won’t come home for another few hours, right?”

              Danny recoiled as Brian said the name ‘Stephanie’, his mind filling with new memories and personality traits. He tried to fight it, he didn’t want to be a girl and didn’t want to like girly things, but the name ‘Stephanie’ kept growing louder and louder in his head. The memories he had of playing action figures began to transform into memories of playing dress-up with Barbie dolls. He tried to think of his video game collection, but could only think of all the makeup he had collected over the years. The shirts with comic book logos that he loved to wear became cute dresses and skirts that revealed just enough to drive boys crazy. As the thought of boys entered his head, his mind began to change even faster. He didn’t want to think of boys, especially cute, shirtless, musclebound boys, but the more he thought about it, the more excited he got, and the more wet the area between his legs grew. Memories of the cute boys at school messing around with him and caressing his body gave him goosebumps. He suddenly remembered Stacy, his twin sister, and how jealous she was when Brian started dating- NO! This wasn’t him! He was a boy, a nerdy little kid. This was wrong! He felt like he was going to fall to his knees and cry, but to his surprise he fell into the embrace of Brian’s arms. He wanted to scream, but he looked up and locked eyes with the cute boy holding him and suddenly felt comfortable.

              Brian laid the naked girl down on the bed without breaking eye contact. He gently grabbed her legs and opened them. The young couple remained speechless, the girl simply staring at Brian’s hardening cock as her legs opened, revealing her tight, moist pussy. The last remnant of Danny’s old life exploded into oblivion as Brian thrust his cock into her for the first time, sending a shockwave of pleasure through her fertile body. She was Stephanie, Brian was her boyfriend, and her twin sister Stacey was always being a bitch to her ever since she and Brian had started dating. She knew Stacey was jealous of her boyfriend, but that knowledge only made her hornier as they fucked on Stacey’s bed. Stephanie threw her arms back and braced herself against the pillow as Brian continued to pound her. She moaned in ecstasy as his dick filled her, shaking her sizeable boobs with each thrust. The stench of sex filled the room, and she knew Stacey would know about her playtime with Brian when she came home. With a final thrust, Brian grunted as Stephanie screamed, both climaxing at the same time before lying next to each other on the bed and smiling. The sweaty couple cuddled, breathing sensually into each other’s faces as Stephanie reveled in the feeling of her pussy being coated in Brian’s cum.

              “That’s a cute hairclip, Steph,” Brian said, brushing the hair out of her face.

              “Thanks, babe. It’s my sister’s,” she said with a wicked smile. She had never been happier, and as the couple drifted blissfully to sleep, Stacey’s goth friend was sitting quietly at the mall while Stacey shopped. She was still learning about hexes, and had the sudden realization that she may have used the wrong spell on Stacey’s hairclip…

Black and White: Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, Chapter 7

Baekhyun’s feet padded across the floor of the campus as he made his way to the two wide doors. Pushing the wide obstacle, he was soon greeted by the glowing sun and the petrichor smell of fresh air. But above all, he was greeted by the sight of you—that, in his opinion, shined brighter than the sun.

He quietly strolled his way to the tree that seemed so familiar to his eyes now. What was even more familiar to him though, was the image of you peacefully resting in your own bubble. A round and fragile bubble that he dared protect against anyone who tried to do any damage to it.

He lowered his legs down and rested his butt on the virescent grass as silently as he could manage, so as to not make a sound. Underneath the pale blue sky, the buildings stood tall and mighty. The coarse bark of the tree shined like gold as it reflected the blazing ball above and the branches stood out with luscious leaves dotting it’s surfaces. The birds chirped melodiously as they floated past the sky. The concrete walkway that was the only flooring uncovered by the fragrant grass still managed to maintain its beige beauty even from all the shoes that have scraped themselves against its surface.

“It’s honestly the most gorgeous shade of pink though,” your younger sister gushed excitedly, her hands wrapped around the gem, which was strung on a delicate silver chain around her neck. She was right. The gem was indeed a pretty shade of pink, and it matched the boy in front of her, whose eyes were shining brightly as he watched her with lovestruck eyes. They had been childhood friends, sticking through elementary, middle, and their awkward pubescent stage of life as well. And now, between Saeri and Daehwi, you were positive they would live a beautiful life after their inevitable feelings were confirmed by their soulmate gem that they were indeed a pair. You looked on with envy, feeling remorse at how your pendant was black.

When you were born, it was a baby blue, just as everyone else’s had been. It showed that you had not met your soulmate at the right time for you to click romantically, which was fine because you were an infant and more worried about crying for a diaper change. Now, at age 20, you were undeniably single. It had turned black sometime when you were a child, around age six. One day you had woken up, and it was just that. Dark. Gloomy. Despairing. He must have died. Your soulmate was gone before you had a chance, and you were a singular anomaly who had lost hope.

You hated yourself at feeling bitter at your sister’s happiness. Saeri was precious to you, and you were grateful that it was Daehwi she would be spending the rest of her life with. Daehwi was your neighbor as long as you remembered. He was sweet, smart, hardworking, and knew how to respect your sister and your family. Still, seeing the two be so lovely together pricked your heart in the most suffocating manner, and even though it was your idea to invite him for dinner as a congratulatory celebration, you were beginning to feel an inkling of regret.

“Please excuse me, restroom.” You got up, trying to ignore the concerned look Saeri and your parents were shooting at each other, while Daehwi looked sullen. They all must have known your real feelings, the ones you had been keeping in. How you could not stop crying when your best friend had met her soulmate. How it felt to always get a pitiful stare in the streets, and how it was the law to keep your pendant on to prevent infidelity.

You splash your face with a bit of cool water, trying to ignore the icy chills it sent down your spine. As you reentered the dining area, your mother stood up, a warm smile on her face.

“_____? Would you like some fresh air? Your father wants some ice cream.” You smile gently. Your mother always knew that you liked to be by yourself when you were upset, mainly because you could not stand the pity. You nodded, taking the cash from her hand, and pull on the first hoodie and sneakers you can find.

“I’ll be back soon,” you promise, and you leave into the evening air, relishing the heat that was beginning to fade away as the sun was setting. The market was only a few blocks away, nothing unbearable. You kept your pendant a little hidden, not wanting to attract more attention. In truth, the whole neighborhood knew about it, but it comforted you when a visiting family did not have to see.

You idly look through the freezers, picking out a few pints of various flavors. Mint for your father, coffee for your mother. Daehwi and Saeri liked vanilla and strawberry respectively. You liked green tea. You did your best to move it towards the register, but a kind worker stopped you.

“Let me get that for you,” he flashed a friendly smile, taking more than half of them and reducing you to only the green tea and vanilla pints. He hummed a little, his cheeriness showing as he led you to an empty register, taking down the ‘Closed’ sign. He smiled once more at you.

He’s cute,’ you thought with a sliver of a smile beginning to show. You looked at his nametag. ‘Ha Sungwoon - PT. He must be a student.’

“That’ll be 15,000 won.” He said, ringing up the register. You narrowed your eyes, before frowning.

“I think you made a mistake. It should be–”

“Don’t worry about it. You looked a little down.” He said, before taking the money from your hand. You blushed at his words, and he gave you a cheekier smile this time. “I know, I’m cool aren’t I?” You nodded, a small chuckle escaping your lips. You hoped he didn’t know how wistful it was, that you wished somehow your pendant would turn pink and his would too. His was tucked away, most likely because it was work, but you never even bothered to check anymore.

“Would you like paper or plastic?” His voice was pleasant, and you point at the paper bag. “Well, here you go.” He slipped a small piece of paper into the bag as well, giving you a slight wink. “And if you ever need a friend, call me.”

You brushed your hair over your shoulder, the loose waves springing slightly as you did so. Daehwi had left hours ago, and you could hear your sister calling him despite seeing him earlier today. The paper Sungwoon had given you was now in front of you, and you sighed, unable to choose what to do. Did you actually take his offer and leave the house tomorrow before Daehwi came back? Or did you just pass? He was a stranger, but at least he was a cute and nice one.

Decide after you wash up.’ You chide to yourself, and tug off the hoodie. Your arms freeze, and the hairs on your arm raise ever so slightly as you let out a scream of horror. In a matter of seconds, Saeri and your mother are by your side, grasping your arm and cradling your head in attempts to calm your frantic sobs.

“H-How?” Saeri murmured, her eyes fixated on the half pink and half black gem. Your mother shook her head, unable to formulate an answer that was certain.

“Just remain calm and strong. ____, are you okay?” You hiccup pathetically, your shutting your eyes as you refused to look at it any longer. Why was it suddenly pink? How? Your soulmate should have been dead for almost 14 years now. There was no reason for the heavens to play such a cruel joke on you. Unless…

“Saeri. Pass me my phone.” She obliged, unsure of what the glint in your eye was. You smooth out the crumpled paper with Sungwoon’s number, trying to focus your vision on the blurry numbers. You type it in, before hitting the call button.

Who is this?” The voice was confused. “Oh, is this that girl from before?

“Ha Sungwoon? C-Can you check your gem?” There was a rustling sound from the other side, before a groan.

“I think I left it in my locker at work. Why, is there a problem?” You found it hard to make a sound. Was it even right to force it onto him? Were you just being desperate at this point? Sungwoon would be a gift from the divine forces if he were somehow your soulmate, and yet the idea of it being some false scenario drove you insane. “Hey, don’t worry. You don’t have to tell me. How about we meet at the cafe across the street from the market at 7 PM tomorrow, and we can talk then?” You nod, before realizing he couldn’t even see you. Your mother and sister were alarmed at the exchange, but hopelessly remained silent.

“I’ll see you tomorrow… Good night.” You said softly, before hanging up. Your mother stroked your hair, a sigh escaping her lips.

“I’m so sorry this had to happen to you, ____. Just please, don’t do anything rash, okay? Go wash up and sleep a little. Take some sleeping medicine if you need it.” She got up and left, Saeri following her cautiously.

“Where is he?” You muttered, a little irritated. In honesty, Sungwoon was merely two minutes late at this point, but the sensitivity of the topic made you jittery and unable to bear the weight of your emotions. Your eyes were still puffy as the stress of the situation had reduced you to tears every few hours, and the largest sunglasses you could find in your possession hid your face as you sipped on a bitter iced coffee. ‘Ah, but it isn’t bitter enough.’

You sat there, fiddling with your gem. You instinctively covered the black side, your mind in a turmoil at the sight of the pink. Saeri was right: it was gorgeous. It made you want to believe that this soulmate system was not flawed, that it was what allowed human civilization to have advanced so smoothly since the beginning of history, but there was a twinge of doubt. Why were the recorded accounts of mess ups so rare? Was something hidden? Or was it actually just you that had somehow defied the rules and were given a soulmate who did not exist.

The wind chimes attached to the cafe’s door jingled, and you looked up hopefully. Sungwoon was there once again, a hard look on his face as his sharp gaze scanned the area. You waved him over hopefully, and flinched when his eyes met yours. While yesterday he had been radiating a goofy and sweetness, today was something stronger and more charismatic. His hair was gelled a little, and he had a black leather jacket that he straightened ever so slightly as he strode confidently towards you, his presence domineering the cafe.

“I assume you’re the girl.” His words were blunt, void of and emotion that was to be distinctly made out. You cast your gaze away, unable to hold his piercing scrutiny any longer.

“Sungwoon, are you-”

“I’m not that weak fool.” He scoffed, before yanking the chair across from you out. “I’m Injae. Call me by his name one more time and I’ll…” his voice trailed off when you finally snapped, throwing off your sunglasses. They clattered onto the tabletop, nearly toppling the iced coffee over.

You threw him a glare, eyes willing him to shut up in your utter humiliation.

“I get it! You don’t want to be my soulmate– who would? I’m some stupid girl who isn’t supposed to have one.” Your voice rose an octave with you intending it, and the few customers in the cafe were beginning to star. “But really, making up some macho and asshole character for yourself?” You rose, grabbing your stuff and turning to leave. He stared at you, something sparkling in his dark eyes. ‘Was that respect? Or was it being impressed?’ You shoot him a last bitter smile, shoving the door with all your might as you leave.

“Don’t move.” His hand wrapped tightly around your wrist, and a shot of pain caused you to wince from his iron grip. “Did you just call me a character? Do you doubt my existence?” His voice was low, almost a mean growl to it. You sighed, unable to contain your irritation as you tried to pry his hand off. It did not move.

“Let go of me.” You snapped, and he tugged you closer, a dangerous smirk playing on his lips. His eyes were haunting, as if calculating your soul when he peered into yours. He was not tall by any means, but you were short as well.

“Soulmate, you said?” He pulled on your chain, and you struggled to have him release you. You could hear a sharp crack, and felt the chain rip off of you. He broke the necklace you had since you were little. You could feel more tears well up as you blindly lunged for it, but he fended you off easily, examining the gem.

“G- Give it back.” You screamed. Your throat felt raw and congested, almost as if it would close up on you at any point. This was all a mistake. Meeting with him was a mistake. Letting his charming smile get to you the other day was a horrible mistake.

“It’s black. I don’t know why you’re saying I’m your soulmate.” He dangled the chain in front of you, and you snatched it back. He was right. The pink was all gone, replaced with the jet black color it had been originally. You fell to your knees, heaving for air as sobs wracked your body. It was gone. The only hope you had had fled you, and all that was remaining was some emo boy in front of you. He knelt down beside you, his hand patting your back in a surprisingly soothing and warm manner.

“Screw you.” You hiccup lamely, and he suppressed a smile. “I hate you.” He sighed, looking up at the now night sky.

“You aren’t a bad girl. Sungwoon would probably be happy with you.” He said finally, and your ears perked up. “Too bad I can’t let him have you.”

“I don’t understand.” You straightened up, and met his stoic gaze. He offered a hand, pulling you back to your feet with ease.

“He can’t have single ownership of this body by himself.” Injae said coolly, before glancing at the streetlamps that were now flickering on. “I’ll walk you home. It’s the least I could do for stealing his date.” You blushed at his words, before looking away from him.

“I don’t need your help if you aren’t willing to tell me where Sungwoon is.” You bartered, and he snorted in amusement at your words.

“Little girl-”

“____. I have a name.”

“- he’s probably fighting his way for control right now,” Injae finished, disregarding your interjection completely. You frowned, before turning away to go home. You ignored the footsteps trailing behind you lazily, feeling some satisfaction that Injae, or Sungwoon, or whoever it was, had been at least taking some responsibility. That satisfaction also faded the moment you had realized the sound was gone, and you tried your best to not frown. ‘What a jerk. He probably has some stupid commitment issues,’ you thought bitterly. Still, the black gem had rubbed you the wrong way. It was almost confirming that indeed, you were single for life, while everyone around you would be paired off with someone who would keep them company until they died.

“____, duck!” A furious shout sounded behind you, and you dropped to the ground, your arms flailing to cover your head as you screwed your eyes shut in panic. A metallic thud rang from behind you, followed by a groan of pain. You uncovered your head, turning to look. A young man holding a small pocket knife was now on the ground, while Injae was glowering him, his teeth bared in a furious scowl with a rusty pipe in his hand.

“Son of a-”

“Don’t hurt him more!” You scream, imagining the damage about to be done. You jumped up, wrapping your arms around Injae, preventing him from swinging the pipe once more. He stopped moving, frozen at your touch, while the other male dropped his knife and ran off, a limp evident. “I’m fine, so don’t… It’s okay, really.” You were breathing hard, unable to fathom the evening. In honesty, your heart was fluttering at the thought of Injae’s heroic save, and you were thankful he was there. But at the same time, it frightened you terribly that he was so eager to fight, that he had no fear for injury.

He finally seemed to breathe again, a huge sigh released as he gently pulled your arms off. He turned slowly, a familiar warm glint of worry in his eyes. ‘Sungwoon?’

“W-What happened?” Sungwoon stuttered, before looking at the heavy pipe in his hands. He dropped it instantly, the clatter of the metal shocking you as you took a step back. He looked at the leather sleeve, horror in his eyes as realization set in.

“Is this Sungwoon or…”

“You met Injae, didn’t you?” Sungwoon’s voice was shrunken with uncertainty, his eyes ashamed as they were cast towards the pavement beneath you two. You nodded, trying to shove the rising confusion and panic down once more. “He didn’t hurt you, did he?” You shook your head, before remembering the gem. You pulled it out, dreading the black. It was half pink once more, and you peered at him nervously.

“Do you remember anything?” He shook his head, his face suddenly tired. “You don’t even know how you were supposed to meet me?”

“I know that much,” he furrowed his brows. “Can I have your name?”

“____.” You bit your lower lip. “Who exactly is Injae?” He looked uncomfortable at the question, but mumbled some incoherent words. You looked at him blankly, and he cleared his throat, his gaze looking away from you.

“He’s my alter” It sounded foreign, something you had never heard of. ‘Alter?’ “I have a special condition. Multiple personality.” The name sounded vaguely familiar, but you still were unsure of what to say. He looked at you, his countenance reflecting the same troubled and mix of emotions you felt internally.

“Never mind. I’ll take you home. Is it near?” You nodded, pointing to the house at the corner of the street. The walk was silent, but it did not feel awkward to you at all. Perhaps it was the shyness of the situation, or how much you had to persevere with him from the very beginning, but it was a silence you could handle quite well. He seemed apologetic every step of the way, and by the time you got to your front door, he sighed and offered a small smile.

“I guess I’ll talk to you later. Good night,” you said quietly, pushing your key to the front door into the lock.

“Wait, ___. I’ll take you out another time. I’m really sorry.” He rubbed the back of his head, unsure of what to do. ‘Was this a date?’ You smiled genuinely at this, and nodded.

“I’ll be looking forward to it. Have a safe walk home, Sungwoon.”

“___! Wake up, there’s a guy here for you.” Saeri’s voice was thick with curiosity, but she was mature enough to not pry, even though it was evident she desperately wanted to. You shot up from your bed. In truth, you had been awake for a few hours now, but you had never found the willpower to leave your room, the only place that seemed to be a haven for your thoughts. You caught a glimpse of your knotted hair in the mirror and winced.

“Can you tell him to wait a few minutes?” You beg, and Saeri nodded in amusement, leaving the room with a soft thud of the door. You ran into the bathroom, brushing your teeth with one hand and brushing your hair with the other. Your mind was wandering to what clothes to wear. Was today his idea of a date? Was it Sungwoon or Injae? You had researched the topic a bit the night before, the moment you had stepped foot into your room, with your trusty laptop.

Injae was his alternate personality, one of how many she had no clue. He had his own style, his own mind, and his own goals, but from what you could see he was certainly no wicked character. Maybe tough, but he balanced Sungwoon’s kindness very well.

You finally tugged on a pair of jeans and a boxy striped tee, tossing your hair over one shoulder as you left the room. Sungwoon was seated in the kitchen, chatting away in a lively manner with your mother, who looked delighted at his presence.

“- And when she was a child, she said she was going to be a monkey because she had a talent for tree climbing.” Your mother was saying, while Sungwoon chuckled at this newfound information on you. You shot her a pleading look as you walked into the room.

“Mom!” You whined, exasperated. “You can’t tell anyone who walks through the front door how I was a disaster as a kid!”

“But Sungwoon isn’t just any boy,” your mother pointed out with a wise smile, before shooing the two of you out of the kitchen. “Anyways, he volunteered to babysit you for at least the morning so go and act like a young lady for once.” You scoffed at her words in disbelief, while Sungwoon looked mildly amused at the banter.

“Your mother is very friendly,” he said as he opened the door for you. You shot him an accusing look.

“You two might as well be conspiring against me,” you huffed, and he grinned widely at this, putting his hands up as if to surrender. “I think you owe me breakfast.”

“No doubt, I do. To the cafe?” You nodded in agreement. Looking at him closer in the day, he was definitely cute. His skin looked soft and pale, his brown hair falling messily but perfectly at the same time. His eyes had a bright twinkle as he looked around, first at a bird and then at the cars passing by.

“Did you find your soulmate?” You blurt the words as you approach the cafe. He smiled a little at this, stopping in front of the glass door.

“It’s complicated,” he said finally. “I’ll explain, but let’s eat first.” He opened the door, waving you in. You smile a little at his manners, before looking at the menu.

“I like the cinnamon honey toast,” you said finally, and he nodded.

“Go sit, I’ll order. Do you want coffee?” You nodded, and he left you. You took the same seat as you had the day before, fiddling with the gem on your broken necklace. You hadn’t confessed to your parents yet that it was ruined, but there was no urgency to either. The vibrant millennium pink in contrast with the black made you wistful. It was so aggravating that you could not have the same beautiful pink gem as others did.

Sungwoon took the seat across from you, placing the table buzzer in front of him. He handed you a mug of coffee, setting down the small tray with creamer, spoons, and a small thing of sugar. You pour a little cream, watching the white haze dissipate as your swirled the spoon slowly.

“I believe I owe an explanation now.” He began. You peered up at him, sipping the mug with interest.

“I agree with that statement,” you murmur, and the faintest of sadness crept into his smile.

“I want to firstly apologize for any anger or grief caused by Injae. I can’t remember what happened when he was my public identity, but I could tell you were quite shaken at his appearance.”

“Injae… he isn’t a bad guy.” You said hesitantly, before thanking the waitress who set down your breakfast. Sungwoon did not order food, instead only accepting the iced caramel macchiato.

“I suppose he may have developed some feelings for you to have been so kind,” Sungwoon remarked. “He causes a lot of devastating side effects for me, but I’m also grateful for him. He’s made it up in interesting ways for me. I haven’t ever lost a fist fight thanks to him.” Sungwoon chuckled bitterly. “But I’ve also been losing many hours of my life to him.”

“When did Injae form?” You ask gently, cutting off a corner of the toast. He didn’t look surprised at your question, instead twirling his drink in his hand, the clatter of ice cubes sounding.

“I assume you did some research last night.” You blush at how correct his words were. “I think it was when I was about seven years old. He’s the same age as me, but a lot more rash.”

‘Seven years old… ‘ The thought is unsettling, and the sweetness of the food feels almost sour on your tongue. If you could recall the information you had read last night, it stated that many people with multiple personalities were victims of abuse, most likely as children. You bit your lower lip, refusing to ask that question.

“Now, about my soulmate situation.” You perked up at this, and he chuckled at your outward burst of interest. “I do have a soulmate. I’ve met her. The problem is Injae. Also, I can’t quite tell if this girl realizes she’s my soulmate definitively.” You frown at this, letting the hurt seep in. It was like a thorn pricking you. You could not erase the memories of Sungwoon’s kindness in the past few days, as well as how Injae had saved you. To say you have not fallen for these boys was a lie.

“Oh. She must be a lucky girl,” you huff, before popping another cube of toast into your mouth and chewing sullenly. Sungwoon smiled at your pouting lips. He wondered if you had an idea of how adorable you looked to him in that moment, and placed his half finished drink on the table. He reached out and poked your head, causing you to glare at him.

“Dummy. It’s you.” You nearly choked on your food, and you sipped the coffee in efforts to wash it down, ignoring the scalding liquid on your tongue. He looked amused at your coughing and passed you a napkin.

“W-What do you mean? Is that why it’s half pink?” You put the gem in front of him, and he nodded.

“I believe that must be the case. See, look here.” He took out his own gem, which glowed slightly under the cafe lights.

“But why is mine black then?” You finally said flatly. You wanted to believe in his words more than anything. He was one of the kindest people you had met, and by far the one you wished more than anyone to be your soulmate. Still, the idea of building up false hope lurked in your mind, warning you to back away.

“Black means your soulmate died, doesn’t it?” You nodded.

“That’s why I want to let you in but… I can’t.” Your voice was pained. “You can’t just die and suddenly resurrect. I think my gem is just dysfunctional.” He leaned back in his chair, looking away at your words. He did not want you to cry, nor did he ever want to hurt you. The instances from the day before were haunting him enough. Still, he remembered the utter joy when he had seen his gem turn pink upon meeting you at his part time shift.

“When I was seven, I almost died. I should have died.” His tone was matter-of-fact, but his eyes shone with fear. Fear that you would reject him again. Fear of being alone. “My father was a horrible drunk. He came home one night, trying to beat my sister. I got angry and scared, and i redirected his anger to me.” You gasped at his words. He gave a miserable smile, his lips barely in a ghost of a grin.

“I thought he wasn’t going to make it into the elevator when I tried to run. I was wrong. He started beating me. He had a knife that was stolen. It was too late at night for anyone to be out, and I was bleeding too much. That’s when Injae appeared.” There was a hint of fondness for his alter at this. Tears were brimming in your eyes. “By the time I woke up in the hospital, all I could hear was how I should have been dead. I was stabbed in the abdomen, and I was bruised all over. They said we were both found in the elevator unconscious. I guess Injae was a fighter from the beginning.”

“That’s… I’m sorry.” Your hand reached out and covered his own. He welcomed the warmth that enveloped the backside of his hand, and admired your small hands.

“I think that’s why your gem thinks I’m dead. It’s probably also half pink because of Injae.” Sungwoon said quietly. You squeezed his hand mindlessly, and he flipped his hand so he could entwine his fingers with yours.

“But you are my soulmate then.” The last wall around your weary heart finally crumbled, opening up to him completely. The jealously towards Saeri and Daehwi was a thing of the past, and your future seemed considerably less bleak and worrisome.

“I am but don’t forget we may have a constant third wheel named Injae.” You laughed at his words.

“I’ll win him over.” You said confidently. There was no way you were going to give up Sungwoon that easily. Maybe Injae existed, but if Sungwoon still had a life that was destined to be with you then so be it.

“Of course you will,” Sungwoon jabbed back playfully, and he picked up the tray to return it to the counter. You watched him with newfound admiration. The wait was over. Sungwoon was yours, and you were his.

“Can I ask something?” You queried as you two left the cafe. Sungwoon had promised to take you to a few of the small boutiques nearby, something you had wanted to do if you ever had a soulmate. ‘Well you do now.’

“Is it what happened to my father?” You nodded, and he squeezed your hand a little. “He’s been going in and out of prison time for various offenses, fined for a lot of other offenses, my parents divorced soon after I left the hospital, and the last time I heard he was taken back into a rehabilitation center for alcohol and now drug abuse.” You winced internally at the long list. You were glad Sungwoon was finally safe but at the same time, you were sad his family had such a dark past to it.

“Is that why you work part time?” He shook his head, looking at you adoringly. He relished the feeling of someone caring for him now: it were as though someone filled the emptiness he had in the first 21 years of life.

“My mother remarried to quite a high positioned businessman. He’s a kind father to me and my sister, and he spoils us all ridiculously. I just like the thought of being independence step by step.” You nodded, admiring his work ethic. “Afterall, I have to be able to support our family, don’t I?” Blushing, you hit him, causing him to erupt in laughter.

“Let’s step by in here.” It was a small accessories store, the same one that Daehwi and Saeri had bought their friendship bracelet from a few years prior. You admired the handcrafted jewelry. He picked up a delicate silver chain, holding it up towards you as if to check how it looked.

“I’ll take this.” Sungwoon said, and the employee at the register nodded.

“Would you like anything else?” He paused, looking at you. Your gaze flitted to the rings and bands, and he smiled.

“Please give us a minute.” He picked up a rose gold band, which had a small silver cloud on it. “Do you like this?” You smiled at the thought of buying it, but you shook your head. You wanted something simple that you could wear together without him feeling awkward.

“Can we take this one?” You held up a thicker, silver band. He smiled, putting it onto your ring finger of your left hand.

“I promise I’ll but you a better one in the future when we’re ready for it.” The employee looked as though she were about to squeal from his words, and you stifle a giggle, nodding shyly.

“We’ll take this too then.” Sungwoon said, pulling out his wallet. He shot you a warning look when you were about to protest. “Let me do this for you at least. Heavens knows I’ll be a terrible soulmate in the future.” You fidgeted on the side, watching him take the chain and his ring back from the employee and greet you again with a glint of amusement in his eyes. He gave you the ring.

“I want you to put it on my hand for me,” he teased, and you rolled your eyes but obliged. You slid it onto his ring finger, admiring how the couple item looked. It dawned on you yet again that now you had someone to spend time with, someone who was going to understand you and be by your side forever.  “Also, give me your gem.” You fished it out of your pocket, and he took it off of the broken chain, before putting it on for you. You smiled, reaching out to give him a quick hug as he finished. He reached out his hand, which you grabbed.

The rest of the day was filled with making up for a lack of memories and past filled of hurt with Sungwoon. You visited clothing stores, trying on silly outfits. You went to your favorite food stalls, sharing snacks. You showed each other childhood places in the town that brought happy memories. He showed you the soccer field that he used to play on as a child, while you introduced the playground with your favorite swingset. As the sun was beginning to set, you sighed contentedly at his side, your head resting on his shoulder.

“Why did it take me so long to find you?” You wondered aloud, and he cuffed your head gently.

“Because the best presents take the longest to find. Like me.” You wrinkled your nose at his jokingly arrogant words. “Hang on, I need to go to the bathroom. I’ll be back, and then I’ll walk you home.” You lift your head sleepily, letting him leave for the park restrooms. You waited for his return, fiddling with your phone idly. You had messaged your best friend to call you later at night, wanting to tell her about Sungwoon. Saeri had also asked where you were, and you had told her you would be home soon. And yet, as time trickled on, Sungwoon was still nowhere in your sight. You sighed, brushing the grass off of your jeans and standing up. You started towards the restrooms.

“– Punk, you just messed with the wrong group.” You flinched at the shouting, and your heart rate quickened as you bolted towards the area behind the restrooms. There were about three guys, all menacingly glaring at Injae, who’s hardened expression you could identify all too well. His gaze flickered to you, warning you to stay away, before he smirked a little.

“You guys are clearly picking a fight that won’t end favorably for you.” They huffed indignantly, before charging at him. You covered your eyes with your hands, unable to watch. You could hear yowls of pain, thankfully none of them sounding similar to Injae’s voice, and only looked up when a hand grabbed yours, yanking you forward.

“Time to run, ___.” You let him pull you, away from the park and all of the people there. It was exhilarating, and you almost didn’t mind the situation when you could hear Injae’s laughter as he tugged you along towards your home. The guys were far out of sight, and you stopped running, instead doubled over to catch your breaths. Your face was flushed, and Injae grinned at you.

“Looks like I saved the day again,” there was a childlike note in his voice as he said this. You straighten up, and he sighed, returning once more to the stoic boy he originally was.

“How are you, Injae?” He huffed at your words, scowling ever so slightly.

“You want me to be gone so Sungwoon can be with you, don’t you?” You looked alarmed at his words. In honesty, you hadn’t a clue what to do. “You didn’t even consider my thoughts in your plan!”

“I didn’t have any intentions of that nature,” you retorted softly. “I was going to thank you for taking care of him and keeping him safe over the last 21 years. You really helped him, and I doubt I would have met my soulmate if you didn’t exist.” Injae softened slightly, before returning to a rather emotionless state.

“I suppose he’s the winner of every situation. He has me to protect him, and you to love on him. What do I have?” An ache in your heart crept up at this, and you reached out to hesitantly hug him.

“You’re part of Sungwoon. Doesn’t that mean my love extends for you too? You’re protecting him and yourself. I think you two are missing each other’s perspective just a little.” He stiffened at your embrace, as if unable to know what it was. You looked up at him, sticking your tongue out.

“You’re lucky we both grew to like you a lot then. Otherwise your shoulder would have been dislocated by now.” You roll your eyes at this statement. “Also, tell Sungwoon to stop drinking caramel macchiato. It’s way to sweet. Black iced coffee is way better.”

“Are you a grandpa or a child in disguise?” You grumbled, letting go of him. He coughed a little, clearing his throat and pointing at your gem.

“This is actually my last goodbye.” You froze at his words. “I share a conscience with him. I know how much he means to you, and how much he wants to spend the future with you. I also think that the only and best way I can be with you is for him to take over his life again.” You teared up a little at this. He smiled ruefully, running a hand through his hair.

“I- Thank you. Thank you for everything, Injae. I will never forget you, and I will remind him every other day to drink iced black coffee. Any other requests?” He snorted, before reaching out to stroke your hair fondly.

“You’re a good girl for him. Take care of him, because I can’t anymore.” Injae closed his eyes, aguish flickering over his faces as it seemed to have spasms. He doubled over, and you dropped to a crouch.

“I-Injae? Sungwoon? Are you okay?” A few pedestrians shot looks of concern, and finally he stopped, instead twitching and looking up once more. His eyes were confused, gentle and filled with alarm when he saw your worried face.

“___? What’s wrong?”

“Injae left.” You mumbled, trying to brush the tears off of your face. His hand reached up, wiping them off with his thumb. You smiled sadly. “He said he was thankful for you to find a girl like me. And he said to stop drinking sugary drinks.” Sungwoon chuckled wistfully.

“It’s odd. I feel fine but a little hollow without him. You don’t love him more than you loved me… right?” You shrugged jokingly, and he groaned.

“I do love you more, dumbass.” You whisper as you hug him, snuggling into his chest. “And I’m sad he’s gone, but I’m thankful I can at least spend the rest of my days with you.” On your chain, the gem sparkled a beautiful pink, all the black gone as Sungwoon wrapped his arms around you.
