Across the Divide

TITLE: Across The Divide

CHAPTER NO./ONE SHOT: Chapter Fourteen

AUTHOR: wolfpawn

ORIGINAL IMAGINE: Imagine Loki sneaking out of the palace as a youth to see the city and countryside, while out one day, he accidentally gets in trouble for something, but a young girl deals with the situation, allowing him to be left alone and his true identity be kept secret. She is a poor girl who is only in the city to sell goods with her father, so she does not realise it is Loki, even though she sees his face. They form a friendship as she shows him around the city, and tells him the date she comes to the city every month for a particular market.

RATING: Teen and Up

Frigga said nothing as her son told her everything, from the day he first met Ariella in the country market as she assisted him get away from a stall-keeper who was accusing him of theft, of how he befriended the girl, how she was the reason he learnt of the mine collapse, how she thought him of all the great inequalities of Asgard, of how she was his greatest friends, how she cared about him, and him her, of her family, of how she ceased to go to the markets one day, of how he thought she was lost, but then found her again and of how was suffering, how she had no form of comfort, how she clearly could not fight the inevitable decline of her health any longer, of how he was about to lose her. What he did not say was his feelings on the matter, but that didn’t matter, Frigga could see that as plainly as she could her younger son in front of her.

She had realised only a short period before that Loki’s recent infatuation was with the girl in question, causing her heartache. There was such little chance of the girl making any form of recovery, she knew that her death would tear Loki apart and so few could understand.

NEW GEED SCANS

This time we have:
-New host/human form for Zero
-Preview of geed vs Skull Gomora
-Preview of Solid Burning and Acro Smasher

-SOMEONE(belial in his human form perhaps?) is summoning the fusion kaiju

Firstly, my sources say Primitive’s finisher will be called ‘Wrecking Burst’

Also note that we can see that the geed claw can also be accessed by geed’s other forms as seen with Acro Smasher holding it BUT the geed claw seemed to have widened into a trident. Does that mean the geed claw will change its form corresponding to geed’s form change as well?!

In addition, we can see that the first fight with skull Gomora takes place in several places(in water and in the city) suggesting that this battle may be taking place in 2 seperate rounds. What I suspect is in the first round, Geed might lose perhaps it is his first transformation (hinted in earlier scans that he will only know his identity as Belial’s son when he first transforms) which results in his first defeat. And he’ll return to fight skull Gomora again when it is being summoned once again by the antagonist.

Five reasons to watch Netflix's new Anne of Green Gables adaption, Anne With An "E"...

So I didn’t think I would need to make a post like this but negative reviews that don’t do the show justice (particularly that horrible vanity fair article) have apparently left me no choice….
Overall, Netflix’s Anne With An “E” or simply Anne The Series as it was called when it originally aired on the CBC in Canada, is wonderful.

here are five reasons why you should watch Anne With An “E” on Netflix:

1. Anne herself, Amybeth McNulty.

Amybeth completely captures Anne’s spirit. I swear it’s like someone shook the book and Amybeth fell out of it. She plays Anne with all the dreaminess, quirkiness, and charm that we know and love, as well as adding more depth to her than we’ve seen in previous adaptions. This brings me to my next point…

2. Anne is portrayed as an abuse and trauma survivor, as she should be!

Sure, we all love the lighthearted humor of Anne’s many misadventures in the original stories, and that’s still there in Anne With An “E”, but Anne was also the victim of a lot of mental and physical neglect and abuse in her past life before being adopted by the Cuthberts. In the show, she suffers from symptoms of PTSD and the effects of her past trauma are evident. The result of adding more details of Anne’s past do make the show darker at times, but the dark times only make the light times shine brighter, and we know there are more light times to come in Anne’s story!

3. Besides Amybeth, the rest of the cast is superb as well!

All around, the casting is spot on and the acting is spectacular! I don’t even know what else to say here, but everyone is just so wonderful!!!

And don’t think I’d forget… you can count on me to give a special shout-out to everyone’s favorite slate smack recipient, Gilbert Blythe.

Lucas Jade Zumann is PERFECT as Gilbert. He brings a slyness and playfulness to Gilbert that was there in the books but glossed over in other adaptions. And by the way, his chemistry with Amybeth McNulty is everything you could ever ask for and more…

(side note: I would also like to throw out a special mention to Aunt Josephine Barry, no spoilers but she’s more lovable than she’s ever been)

4. The show tackles timeless and contemporary themes of identity, feminism, bullying, and prejudice.

Anne’s life, realistically, doesn't become all sunshine and rainbows as soon as she comes to Avonlea. She struggles to fit in and faces bullying at school. The show also addresses issues of sexism and classism and does a great job at it while accurately (for the most part) staying within the time period it is portraying.

5. Everything about the show is high quality.

From the aforementioned acting to the cinematography, music, costume design, sets, editing, and the GORGEOUS opening title sequence, everything is the highest quality and you can tell how much thought, time, effort, and passion went into the making of this show.

Please give it a chance and check it out on Netflix, given the opportunity the show could grow and get even better if it is renewed for future seasons!

Spell Loopholes

Wording a spell correctly is extremely important! We’ve all heard the stories of someone who cast a spell and technically had it come true, but in a way that wasn’t what they actually wanted at all! Here’s a list of common “loopholes” spells will take to get the job done, and how to make sure you get what you want!

🕯Taking its time- “I want money,” you tell the Universe, hoping to get some help with rent. Well, rent comes and there’s no extra cash in sight! Then, two weeks later, a surprise wad of cash all but lands in your lap. The spell came true, but not in time for when it mattered. This is easily fixed by adding “…by the end of the month,” or specifying what the money is for, which in this case was this month’s rent.

🕯No help needed- “I want money,” you say again. Magic will often take the path of least resistance, so if you’ve already got a paycheck on the way, the spell might not do much besides make sure it doesn’t get lost. There. Money. It can be good to specify that you want your spell to work in addition to everything you’re already doing!

🕯 Bare minimum- This time from your money spell, it arrives on time from an unexpected source! But it’s a quarter you found on the ground. Maybe three quarters. Not much help! If your intent would require the money to be close to a certain amount or any other specific like that, let it be known! The universe isn’t there to make assumptions.

🕯 For the worst- Let’s say you have two friends that have been flirting, so you cast a nice little spell to let any mutual interest between them blossom into a relationship and save them some trouble. It happens, but it turns out they do NOT work well with each other. They are interested in each other, but argue constantly and bring out the worst in each other. The relationship is hurting them both. You had the absolute best of intentions, but there was no way of knowing that would happen! This is why a lot of witches include the phrase, “for the highest good” in their spells, as a failsafe for any unexpected pitfalls like this that may be lurking. The universe will see them but doesn’t know to care unless you specify.

🕯Another layer- Once I made a dream bear to bring me more dreams. Well, I had lots more dreams, but couldn’t remember any of them! I didn’t think that was something I needed to specify. Make sure you hit every point you need to be satisfied with a result.

As a general rule, if my spell includes a prayer or petition of any sort, I take a few minutes and comb through it for stuff like this beforehand. What am I specifying? What am I leaving up to interpretation? Could any of that manifest in a way I would be unhappy with? Take a little time before you start casting to smooth out all those wrinkles! Best of wishes!

Hey guys, Emerson here. I know I don’t post much anymore, but this is something that means a lot to me.

Anyways, my budgie Pond is sick. We don’t know with what, we’re still waiting on the test results. We suspect that it’s chlamydia. I wanted to keep her at the vet for today and into tomorrow, but we had to go against vet’s orders and take her home because of the vet bills for keeping her there (totalling to $1100 between yesterday and today, but we cut it down to $700). We had to take her out of the oxygen tank, and her breathing is shallow and rapid. She’s not doing well out of the tank. My dad argued that she’s a $20 bird and that the expenses were far too much for a parakeet. I know you guys would understand the frustration this kind of statement brings about. I mean, if it was our dog who’s sick, he would do anything for him. I even offered up my whole savings to keep her there, but he wouldn’t allow it. So I’m stuck begging on the internet for help. The goal is to raise enough to cover current costs so we can break even and put her back in a hospital setting, specifically under intensive treatment and in an oxygenated tank.

If you donate, you can message me afterwards and I’ll try and make you some art. I’m decent at pet portraits and drawings. I really appreciate anything that comes our way, anything helps. Thank you for your time.

Romance, Representation And You

So the last post I reblogged got some interesting comments I want to touch on, namely people stating that they don’t dislike Romance because it’s fluffy and feel good, but because it is often sexist, misogynistic, ableist, heteronormative and woefully lacking in diversity, which yes, absolutely, yes. Those are entirely valid criticisms of the genre—indeed I find them to be valid of any genre, whether it’s sci-fi, fantasy, young adult or otherwise. There is a shocking lack of diversity in our fiction and media—and not because people don’t want it or aren’t trying to make it, but because publishing houses and media can’t see the co-relation between what their marketing teams are telling them, and the actual reality that of course straight white stories are selling the best, of course it is, because you won’t sell anything else, that’s why there’s no sales numbers for anything else.

I worked in a romance publishing house for a good few years, I also worked for their erotica team, and do you know, not once did I ever come across a manuscript with a disabled person? Not a single one. There was also never a manuscript that featured a character with mental illness who wasn’t the villain, or whose issues couldn’t be Fixed With Love™(*vomit*).

The few times a story featured non white characters, it was usually “The Best Friend Who Gives Sassy Real Advice”, or so horrifically racist that our modus operandi was to nuke it from the office servers rather than try and deal with it because how do you politely tell an author, hey, you’re a fetishistic piece of shit please find God and change the entirety of your story so we can print it, (Answer: you don’t there is no polite way to tell someone they are a  fetishistic piece of shit and you never want their work to darken your inbox ever again.) when you can instead say “Sorry, not what we’re looking for a the moment” and retreat to the relative safety of the slushpile where maybe, just maybe, a hidden gem awaits excavation.

And our publishing house prided itself on diversity because we had an LGBT section, and oh boy let me tell you I was so excited when I got moved over onto that side…only to realize, there’s no w/w fiction because “it doesn’t sell well” and 90% of the m/m fiction is being written by women for women and they fired the one gay author cause his work wasn’t “what was selling” and every bisexual character I ever encountered was either Actually Gay/Actually Straight, or surprise! The Evil Greedy Homewrecker who needs to pick a side, booo hiiiiss, grab your pitchforks and burn the witch.

And I remember, I remember looking to my senior editor who was also my friend at the time, a poly bisexual, mentally ill woman and saying “what the fuck Rebecca” (yes, her name was actually Becky) and she looked at me over our skype call and said “You want to keep your job? Deal with it.”

Because you see, Marketing reigns supreme, and Marketing doesn’t give a shit about people like you and me. It doesn’t care if the neurodivergent person wants to see people like them in fiction, it doesn’t care that people of color want to be more than just the friend/villain, they don’t care that there is more to LGBTQIA+ than the L and specifically the G, it doesn’t care if disabled people want to be represented as more than someone ele’s story arc prop. They don’t care they, don’t care, and do you know why so many publishing houses look down on indie publishing and self published authors and try to call them hacks? Because we don’t give a fuck that they don’t care and we’re doing what we want anyway.

Oh sure you get the usual “but the work is so unpolished, no one has vetted it, it’s just bad, this is why we need publishers to stop the crap from rising to the top”—and yet Fifty Shades of Grey still gets a multi-billion dollar production budget and to the top of the best seller list—do you see, where I am going with this? They’re not interested in selling the best they are just interested in selling, and we are living in a society that has a system designed specifically to a quite literally straight and narrow demographic. So of course XYZ stories sell well, of course they do, because that is where the vast majority of marketing goes, to make sure you buy into it. And Romance…Romance is a lucrative industry to be in if you can get the weight of that campaign behind you…but if you can’t? Well, not only do you have to compete with lack of funding and resources, but also the pervasive lie that because you’re not affiliated directly with X Publishing House or Y Agency, you are not good enough, and no one will want to read your story.

And that’s a bunch of baloney. It’s so much baloney you can slap it between two slices of bread and cover it in mustard because the whole thing is a ham.

Do you know what I would have loved growing up? (And still would) Stories about girls who liked people regardless of gender—and who wasn’t conflicted over it because people are people and gender is fluid and irrelevant to love. Stories about people with mental health issues, where the person is still loved and shown as functional, with their mental health issues, not despite. Stories about disabled and ill people who have fulfilling lives whose arc doesn’t revolve around being brave for simply existing or how much of a saint their families/loved ones are for putting up with them. And do you know what I get instead, even now as an adult who has worked in the industry that sells these stories? I get things like Fifty Shades of Domestic Abuse, and train wrecks like You Before Me where the death of the disabled person is seen as a romantic gesture of selflessness that sets the love interest free to fully live her life. HOW FUCKING FUCKED UP IS THAT. Oh you can argue with me all you want that wasn’t  Moyes intent when she was writing it, but it damn well was the end result.

Yes, Romance is lacking, and yes it needs revamped, it needs more cultural diversity, it needs more inclusion, it needs so many things—but it also needs for people to not want to not write for it because it’s “fluffy” and cheap, like somehow they are selling their souls away.

I’ve got friends who have written amazing, diverse stories told from their point of view…but they won’t ever get them published because as soon as you mention self publishing or the Romance industry they turn their noses up. And they’re shooting themselves in the foot in doing so, because there ain’t no way a story about XYZ is going to make it in a sci-fi house, no matter who much tech you add in. On the flipside of that, I’ve also got a friend who has written about her experiences as a Black queer disabled woman and it’s filled with relationships and great life stuff and so funny…but she can’t get it published anywhere because she’s been explicitly made to feel like she doesn’t belong in the genre because her stories are too complex, they’re too different they’re too comedic…too…too…too (the list goes on). And that’s awful because Romance is a genre that is primarily about people and if you as a Romance house are telling me you can’t sell a story about people, boy are we well and truly fucked.

The biggest criticism of the Romance genre shouldn’t be that it’s too damn happy and therefore unrealistic and nothing but fluff. What’s unrealistic is the complete lack of diversity and inclusion in the genre that makes it so alienating that a huge part of our society immediately feels like they don’t belong.

And that’s a bigger problem than fluff.

So great, yes fine, Romance isn’t for you, you can tell me all the time that you don’t like Romance and I will cheerfully talk to you about literally anything else. But don’t ever tell me you don’t like Romance because it’s simple and fluffy when there’s a whole wealth of actual problematic shit to dislike it for.

And to you, yes you, I’m talking to you. You with the idea in the back of your head and the worry that you’ll never be a Serious Author because all you want to write about is romance and people and angst and fluff and also thinking no one wants to read stories about people like you: take that idea and run with with it, learn from your experiences and keep doing it some more and maybe one day we’ll have the publishing industry we deserve that will acknowledge you. But until then: Rebel and Do It Anyway.

rachelhanke  asked:

Hey Charlie! First off, I adore your art. It gives me all the feels. Secondly, since you're primarily a self taught artist I'm wondering if you have any resources you strongly recommend for someone hoping to someday have a similar job to yours in concept art? If you've already answered this question just let me know and I'll comb through your blog to find it!

ESSAY IMPENDING.

I think, along with resources, I’d always recommend having a good idea of what ‘area’ you want to work in too. My job is kind of a strange one (in that it’s an house job but we’re not producing the games or films or actual products.) We are a step in the production line. I get to be part of sweet projects, but also I get to be part of many… I’m not locked into whatever a studio might be making for 2 or 3 years etc. My fingers are in a lotta pies.

The reason I say that is because a lot of people coming into concept will likely need more skills than I have. I am 95% a 2D artist. I work with 3D but very rarely, and not enough to know the inns and outs. I like 2D… and I consider illustration to be the sweetest spot of all the work I do, so I’m quite happy with that balance (and I’m an old fucking curmudgeon and I don’t wanna learn no 3D.)

If you went for a traditional role in a games studio, it will probably be more expected for you to be fluent in 3D. Not always of course! But it’s likely another good skillset to have. Purely 2D (just art focused) roles are not something that I see as often as mutiltasking roles. Which makes a lot of sense. 2D art is often mostly needed at the beginning of a project, and briefly at the end. In my seven years at Atomhawk I’ve seen a lot of people in other studios laid off, and a lot of studios go under. So, multitasking roles mean people will always have something to do.

APOLOGIES. I’M SOUNDING A LITTLE DOOM AND GLOOM. Great jobs exists! People will always make cool stuff!

I’m very much a jack of all trades and my job demands a lot of different things: characters / turn arounds / outfit designs / expression sheets / illustration / marketing art / pitch art / but it’s all primarly focused around characters. So. If characters are what you want - look into that! I would say that when it comes to apply for / getting work etc, we always love to see range. If someone isn’t showing me all the process behind their work it’s likely the first thing I’m going to ask for when it comes to an interview. I think if you have shiny work (on a freelance basis) a client would have enough confidence in the end result. But for a production role like mine, I wanna see that stuff.

Rough sketches through to shiny polished work. The whole lot. I want it all. I want to see people’s thinking! I’m rambling.

First of all: be able to draw well. Know your characters. Know your figures. Know your anatomy enough to make it convincing and be able to twist it when you need to. We get a lot of people who apply, who, quite simply (don’t hate me) are not good enough yet. We have people who work in tons of different styles and methods but at the heart of it, they can draw well.

DESIGN. Mother of god. Design. Drawing well is the first step, but you also have to have that creative flair to be able to come up with ideas and be able to sell them convincingly. Drawing the thing is only half the battle. No one wants a beautifully rendered character wearing the most impractical / boring outfit you’ve ever seen (just an example). Thinking logically about design is something I’ve seen underestimated many times over the years. In fact, I’d go as far as to say it’s more important than someones drawing abilities. When it comes down to it, drawing is just the tool to represent the design.

Resources wise: the internet is your oyster! Cast a wide net. Create the kind of work you want to do but also push yourself. I think the results are usually better when artists find an area they’re good in and the push the boundaries of that. Better than trying to be a jack of every single trade possible. Don’t have an awesome portfolio full of character work and then think ‘oh, wait, this is just characters, maybe I should stick a fucking car in there too?’ YOU KNOW? Do what you do - and do it well.

Briefly just a few of the things that helped me most: any massive black videos you can find. Mostly for process. Jason Chan’s videos easily had the most impact for me, both in learning how to improve my process and painting the kind of characters I wanted to. Micheal Hampton and Mike Mattesi (force) for anatomy and energy in poses. Your peers! Your favourite artists in the industry at the moment! The places and people you will learn the most from are always so very individual.

Shit that was long. Good luck!

PS. It’s also my humble opinion that you should never take all of your advice from just one person - just take the pieces that click for you :)

The Best Picture mix-up wasn't a ratings ploy or white privilege conspiracy.

Y'all, save your brain cells and just scroll on by all of the thinkpieces that will hit the Internet today about what happened with the Best Picture announcement.  I have already been text messaged, tweeted at, and facebook tagged about how it was a stunt for ratings, about how it was a conspiracy to overshadow Moonlight’s historic win, about how white privilege just led Warren Beatty to assume the result.  Maybe because it’s 2017 and there are other things to worry about or maybe because it’s 2017 and I’m tired of the hyperbolic reactions to literally everything, but I’m not here for all the dramatic responses.  The simplest answer is usually the correct one.  I think the saying in med school is something like “If you hear hooves, it’s probably a horse, not a zebra.”  That pretty much carries through most areas of life and the simplest explanation is almost always the correct one.  Let’s break down three things real quick.

And so a month after they built the fifth Wal-Mart in our county, a little coffee shop opened just a few yards away.

My coworker Rick said it looked like a giant amoeba just waiting to absorb any surrounding properties.

“The coffee shop?” I asked.

“No, Wal-Mart is the amoeba.”

“Oh.”

When I got back to my desk, I typed ‘amoeba’ into Google and realized that I had incorrectly pictured a centipede.

“Fuck Rick,” I thought. “I don’t need any more friends, anyway. I’m on friend overload.”

At dinner that night, the Wal-Mart came up again when my wife Diane mentioned how ugly it was to see another gigantic shopping center taking up space in our town.

“It looks like a giant amoeba just waiting to absorb that little coffee shop,” I said. “And then the coffee shop is like a centipede.”

“I don’t think amoebas eat centipedes. And besides, that’s the point.”

Diane went on to explain that the coffee shop, though legitimate and functioning by all measures, was really an art piece constructed by a group of private donors in response to the new Wal-Mart.

“The idea is that we’re intentionally not supposed to go to the coffee shop. That way, Wal-Mart customers will be forced to observe the gradual decay of a local business every time they enter the store.”

“Well, I’ve been going there all week,” I said. “I think the coffee is top-notch stuff. Plus, it’s on my way to work.”

“The coffee is supposed to be mediocre,” said Diane. “Keeping within the budget of most struggling businesses. It’s supposed to be virtually undrinkable.”

“Hmm…well I really like it.”

“Well, you can’t keep going or else you’ll ruin the project.”

“This is America,” I said. “And if I want a cup of mediocre, overpriced coffee, by god I will have it!”

Over the next several months, I kept drinking the coffee. Some days I even went twice. The quality of the coffee, I was told, gradually worsened as a result of my unwavering interest, but I never noticed and so I had no choice but to doubt the rumors.

My doubt remained intact even after overhearing a private conversation between the coffee shop’s manager and the cashier. I was standing by a tree and watching a teenager back his car into another car and I guess they didn’t see me.

“I know,” said the cashier. “I’ve tried that, but it’s like he doesn’t have taste buds.”

“Well, he’s single-handedly fucking up this entire thing.”

“So what then, poison? Would he even drink poison?”

“Now, that’s an interesting idea.”

“Stupid teenage drivers,” I thought.

In the end, they poisoned the coffee. I made it a month after that, but my failing eyesight and ravaged kidneys eventually left me bed-ridden.

“Well, they just opened another location,” said Diane. “Business is booming. I hope you’re happy.”

And I wasn’t happy, but I was somehow content and I thought about everything: Wal-Mart, art projects, even little amoebas crawling through the forest, one-hundred legs working beautifully in tandem.

“Nobody ever wins in these kinds of things,” said Diane.

“But if you had to pick a winner, you’d probably pick me because the coffee shop was on my way to work.”

Diane sighed and left the room. I dozed off and in my dream, they did pick a winner. They picked me and I was led over to a small stage to choose my prize: A brand new recliner or two new kidneys!

“The recliner,” I inquired. “How far back are we talking?”

“We are supposed to open up, and be able to trust each other. We can’t form Voltron if we are at each other’s throat.” Shiro mentions.
“He started it!” Lance throws a finger in Keith’s direction.
“ENOUGH!”
Lance tenses up when Shiro raises his voice. Keith isn’t lying. If it hadn’t been for his leave at the Garrison, Lance would still be a Cargo Pilot if anything, but just like Keith has his own reasons for leaving, Lance has special circumstances too.
“Maybe we should call it a day… I’m exhausted anyhow.” Hunk says, as he watches Lance tremble with hands in a fist.
“I agree. Paladins, we will have dinner then head to our rooms to rest before training again early in the morning.” Allura commands as she and Coran leave to prepare dinner.
“Not hungry.” Lance grits between closed teeth as he storms off to his room.
“He has never been much of a team player, I would know.” Pidge says, recalling the simulation training at the academy.
“Pidge, that not true…” Hunk tries to defend.
“What’s his problem anyways… we’re all busting our ass to form Voltron…”
“Why did you have to bring up the Garrisons?” Hunk interrupts.
“It’s true.” Keith Chides.
“It’s not.” Hunk challenges.
Hunk, doesn’t normally challenge head on, He doesn’t have trouble in taking commands and keeping his 2 cents to himself, so Shiro assumes that Hunk is only trying to protect Lance.
“He was sick.”
Pidge and and Shiro perk up at the information.
“What?” Pidge says, hoping Hunk will elaborate.
He looks to the floors, as if they have the answer…
“Lance is from a really big family, and it’s not like tuition for the Academy is cheap. He’s on.. Well he was on a scholarship…”
“Your telling me Lance is smart?” Pidge jokes.
Nobody is laughing.
“It was a Full ride as a Fighter Pilot, he just had to take the test and guarantee his spot by his second term. He studied a lot, kept asking me to help him in the library… and I dont know if I should keep talking? Can we just forget what I said?”
“Wait, I’m not following… what does a scholarship have to do with Being a Fighter Pilot or Keith?” Shiro says.
“Fighter pilots need to put in a certain amount of hours before graduating and there are only 24 seats in that class. Only one Pilot put in enough hours to graduate that term…. and that was you, Takeshi Shirogane.” Hunk and Shiro share looks.
“There was only one seat open. If Lance didn’t get in, they were going to strip him of his scholarship.
The only other person who was testing in that year was…” they both looked to Keith. “well you get the picture.
So we spent every night for 2 weeks training and studying, until he made himself sick. Right before the Physical Test, Lance collapsed. He was in the hospital for 2 days due to dehydration and what they said was a stress cold.
When he woke up, Lance said he was sure he was going to have to start packing his backs, but instead Sergent Iverson, came to congratulate him. He mentioned that Keith dropped out and even though Lance didn’t pass the physical, his test scores were almost perfect.”
There is a long pause, but Hunk continued.
“Rumors spread like a wild fire. As far as the academy knew, Lance only got in because Keith left, and yeah Lance knows that’s the case, but if he had a chance to do all over again…”
“Is this why he constantly feels like he need to compete with me?”
“I don’t know. It’s nothing against you Keith, but this whole rivalry thing he has with you, it doesn’t really make sense to any of us, but for him….he needs to know that he earned his seat in that class, Lance… at the garrison, he would never know if he could compete with you fairly.
Then all this happened.”
Hunk spread is arms wide and high.
“So… maybe what I’m trying to says is,
Are you sure that the only reason Lance became a Fighter Pilot, is because you left?

Just a Thought that has been lingering.

Daveed sighed as he laid on his back in bed next to your sleeping form, restless because he’d been wide awake for almost an hour now. It was one of those nights where his brain was on overdrive. His mind wandered from replaying the lyrics to the new clipping. song he was working on to images of the small baby animals he saw while doing a voiceover for a Disney documentary.

Letting his eyes fall shut, he wrapped his arms tighter around you, pulling you up against his chest. He buried his face into your neck, trying his hardest to clear his mind as best he could.

You stirred in his embrace, awakening groggily and slowly due to the new feeling of Daveed’s warm breath on your neck.

“D?” you murmured tiredly, shifting closer to the warmth his body created.

“Mm,” He hummed against you, his voice rough from not using it for a few hours. He was tired, yes, but the way his train of thought couldn’t come to a stop kept him wide awake, awake enough to respond with no sleep evident in his tone at all.

“D, go the fuck to sleep.”

hey, I have a lil langst prompt if you don’t mind reading!

so all the paladins are having a rest day and so they decide to ask each other questions and the other has to answer them. they’re going in a circle and shiro asks hunk who’s his best friend (they were going for easier questions first to get the ball rolling) and hunk’s just like “pidge obvs” and they smile at each other smugly like they have an inside joke, but it just makes lance realise how isolated he’s become. Hunk was his best friend but now he’s grown apart from them, in fact, he’s not very close with any of his teammates. Do any of them even think of him as a friend, or do they all find him annoying? Maybe then he realises that the only people who know he’s alive and well hate him, and he’s all alone.

idk just a thought?? also I love your blog btw, keep up the great work!

Ugh I relate to this so much…

They were all lounging the common room. Shiro, Keith, Lance, Hunk, and Pidge.

Allura and Coran were discussing an alliance with a species they recently rediscovered a day or two ago. Since the paladins weren’t needed they were allowed to have a rest day. No flying. No training. No stress.

“Ugh I didn’t think that I would be this bored.” Lance dramatically laid down on the couch.

“I agree with Lance, for once. I understand we all wanted a rest day but I’m pretty bored.” Keith sunk farther into the couch.

Shiro laughed at the two boys, “well what does everyone want to do today?”

Everyone was quiet, racking their brains for something to do. They hadn’t had a free day in forever so they didn’t know what to do. Pidge snapped her fingers resulting in everyone attention to be on her. “How about we asked each other questions. It would strengthen our bond as a team and bring us closer to each other.”

Everyone consider the idea for a moment or two before nodding.

They all moved themselves so they were in a circle and the game started. Hunk offered to talk the first question.

“So Keith where did you learn to fight with a sword?”

Keith crossed his arms and smiled “My dad taught me a little bit and when I moved into my house (shack) there was a sword so I just started to practice again.”

Everyone nodded, it made sense and Pidge took the next question. She turned towards Shiro “Do you wear eyeliner?”

Shiro sighed as everyone laughed “Yes, you jealous?”

Pidge just shrugged, failing to hide her smirk.

When everyone calmed down enough Shiro asked his question. “So Hunk who is your best friend?” Obviously Lance.

Hunk smiled and glanced at Pidge, not even looking at who Shiro thought “Pidge obviously.” Both him and Pidge shared a look and smirked at each other like they were sharing an inside joke*.

Shiro gave a forced smile and looked over at the blue paladin, he was smiling so he must be okay. Shiro was very wrong.

So Pidge is Hunk’s best friend? I thought I was, when did that change? Lance looked at all of his friend, no teammates. None of them were looking at him. Do any of them think of me as a friend? Or am I just the right leg of Voltron? Lance could feel insecurity climbing up his throat swallowing his voice. He glanced up at Hunk and Pidge, they were laughing about something. Lance wasn’t an idiot he knew that they had an inside joke, something he wasn’t included in.

Lance looked down at his legs. Am I apart of the team? Am I more than just the sharpshooter? What do I bring to the table except the fact that I pilot the Blue Lion? Anyone can do that. I mean I know that I’m not an expert on engineering or mechanics. I can barely cook and can’t build/ repair anything to save my life. Maybe I’m just too annoying. Pidge is a better person for Hunk to be friends with, they have more in common.

“Lance.”

Lance pulled himself out of his thoughts and looked at Keith who was staring at him in concern. “Yes?”

“It’s your turn.”

Lance nodded and willed his mind to think of a question. Nothing came to mind, he had no desire to learn anything about his team. Lance shrugged. “Hunk, what do you miss about Earth?”

“Oh so much man. Like family and food and normal mechanics.” Hunk shared a laugh with Pidge who nodded in agreement.

Lance nodded and pretended to seem interested in the new information. Lance looked back down at his legs, completely oblivious to the looks his team gave him. Yet they continued to ask their questions.

Lance tuned them out, he tuned everything out. The only thing he focused on was the mice that had started to crawl over him and sat all over him. He started to pet every single one of them, making sure to pet them each for the same amount of time.

Lance nearly pealed out of his skin when Shiro placed his human hand on his shoulder, making sure he didn’t move the mouse that was perched on it.

“Lance the princess called us.”

Lance looked around the room and saw that everyone was already gone. “Oh, okay.” Lance started to stand, placing all the mice on the couch.

Him and Shiro started to walk out of the room, heading to the bridge. Silence filled the space between them and Shiro felt uncomfortable. He snuck a glance at his teammate and notice that he was walking with his head down, something obviously plaguing his mind.

“Everything alright?”

Lance snapped his head up at the older man and gave a forced smile. “Yes! Just a bit tired.”

Shiro frowned “Lance, you don’t need to lie.”

Lance stopped walking. Shiro stopped and faced the boy in front of him. Lance wiped his eyes and looked at Shiro. “I’m part of the team right?”

Shiro blinked, “Of course Lance.”

“I’m more than just then just the right leg of Voltron right?”

Shiro nodded, “Yes. Why are you asking?”

Lance took in a breath and whispered the next words. “Then why isn’t Hunk my best friend? I understand that Pidge is a better fit, but what did I do wrong? Am I annoying?”

Shiro placed his hand on Lance’s shoulder “Lance you’re not annoying. You may see Pidge as a better fit but that doesn’t mean that Hunk replaced you.”

Lance fought the tears that started to form in his eyes. “Then why is she his best friend and not me? She barely talked to us at the Garrison. Now she’s his best friend and they have inside jokes together.”

Shiro tighten his grip on the boys shoulder “Lance, I know you’re upset but people go through phases in friendships. They just have more in common at the moment. Hunk still loves you and is your friend. He didn’t abandon you.”

Lance wiped his eyes “I suppose, it just hurts you know.”

Shiro nodded and pulled the younger boy in for a hug “It’s going to be okay.”

*I just wanted to say that Hunk and Pidge aren’t the “bad guys” they just are caught up in their new friendships! I tried to write it so his team wasn’t “bad”

Sorry this took so long!!!

I hope you like it!

Thank you!

The story of Phillip Phillips

I don’t know if you guys know Phillip Phillips - he sang those songs “home” and “Gone, gone, gone”. I don’t know him that well but I like his songs. He was the winner of American idol and has since then got into a massive legal battle with 19 entertainment who produce the show and run the record label he is signed to as a result of winning (so like what Simon Cowell/Syco is to the X-factor/5H).

I know we are talking about American idol here and not X-factor, but they are basically the same thing and this whole thing has everything to do with Fifth Harmony. In fact, the two shows are so similar that Simon Fuller (owner of American Idol) actually tried to sue Simon Cowell by claiming the copyrights to the X-Factor format, and as a result, Fuller is actually now a partner in the X-factor. Basically Simon Cowell worked with Simon Fuller on American Idol but then sneakily fucked off to produce his own show that did exactly the same thing lol. No wonder Fuller tried to sue him!

Anyway, in January 2015, Phillips started a legal battle to basically get out of his deal with his management. His management company was the same as his record company - all run by 19 entertainment. So basically, Simon fuller had set it up so that he can control and reap the benefits from everything in the winning act’s career (similar to what simon has done to 5H). Apparently 19 entertainment  “Manipulated” him into accepting jobs that didn’t benefit him and his lawyer said the contracts were "oppressive, fatally conflicted.“ .

Some of the ridiculous agreements included being forced to perform for no money and literally not even knowing the title of his album before it was publicly announced!!!!. He claimed that 19 entertainment repeatedly withheld information regarding his career (I think we all know 5H have been in similar situations of being kept in the dark regarding their careers…)

Basically, before phillips actually won the show, he signed a contract with 19 entertainment that allowed them to govern his management, merchandising, recording and publishing. You can assume a similar deal with 5H - From what I understand, the X-factor also makes contestants sign with Syco before the show finishes, making them remain with syco for 3 months after the show finishes… And during those 3 months, Syco/Sony can decide whether they want to exercise their option of signing the act to a full-on record deal. So what I’m saying is that all the bullshit reality TV style contractual stuff that they are able to get away with in that format, probably still applies when they go into the full record deal. These things are set up so that the labels get a lot of passive rights (where syco get a percentage of everything the x-factor contestants do for years) and active rights (where they also get to control everything about the artists’ careers so that the label can benefit the most). Syco/sony still retain a ridiculous amount of control over the artist’s career - probably way more than a normal record deal.

Phillips tried to use the Californian Talent Agencies Act to void his contract with 19 entertainment. (It’s quite a technical thing thats not that interesting). 19 entertainment then tried to sue Phillips’ manager, basically for turning against them and ‘manipulating’ him into trying to get out of his contract. Then, also, in summer 2016 (after 19 entertainment went bankrupt lol) 19 entertainment tried to sue Phillips for millions because he wasn’t carrying on with his contractual obligations to them while the whole legal battle was going on. The latest article I saw on the story from the end of last year was predicting that the label would not been able to sue him because of their bankruptcy. However… I only skimmed through the articles so if you find some more updates on the story please let me know.

The details aren’t really that important - the important points are that these reality TV shows that artists sign record deals off of are notoriously horrible. The contracts give the label active rights to control almost every aspect of the artist’s career. And even when Phillips tried to get out of his management contract, his new manager was hit with a poaching lawsuit, and he himself was hit with a 6 million dollar lawsuit. It literally took actual bankruptcy of the company for him to not get sued in this process. Usually getting into a legal battle with a label is suicidal - they just have so much more power, money and resources, and have usually covered their backs in iron-clad contracts. i think another really important point to take from this is what Phillips said about how his label treated him - that they repeatedly withheld information from him regarding his own career - that he didn’t even know his album title before the public did. i think this stuff is particularly relevant to 5H. The execs are pulling the strings and the artists are the puppets. At times the girls may know just as much as we do regarding their futures. I’m sure as a coping mechanism they’ve learnt to just roll with it and pick their battles.

Anyway I’m not sure on the latest details of the legal battle… I assume he legitimately managed to get out of his management contract in the end, but here is his twitter is you want to support him.
