For the next Standing Rock, pipeline fighters have a new tactic: Attack the banks

  • How do you fight a pipeline when the government approves it, big business supports it and megalithic energy companies have seemingly bottomless coffers to defend it? You go straight for the wallet.
  • Since the Standing Rock pipeline resistance, activists are turning to a new tactic for stopping pipeline projects: pressuring banks and investors to take the cash flow away from the funders of those projects.
  • Residents of Virginia and West Virginia, where the landowners are fighting against the Mountain Valley Pipeline project, are focusing on six banks to target — Bank of America, Wells Fargo, PNC, SunTrust, BNP Paribas and U.S. Bank.
  • The water protectors fighting for Standing Rock used the same strategy.
  • During the pipeline protests, Wells Fargo became a target for those who couldn’t make the cross-country trek to the frigid North Dakota plains, staging protests and blocking off bank entrances to shut down offices. Read more (5/24/17)

Wells Fargo’s new ad features a lesbian couple adopting a deaf child. The couple is played by an actual lesbian couple, and the girl is actually deaf.

“’We thought it was really important that it be very real and authentic and true,’ Moldafsky [the chief marketing officer] said.”

Visibility all day! Thanks, Wells Fargo!

(I’m not crying, it’s just raining inside of the office, on only my face…)

DAPL looms with Trump’s support. This means a continued legacy of stolen land and poisoned water. This means genocide.

The single easiest and most impactful thing you can do this very week: divest your money from DAPL.

The one thing the backers of pipeline projects care about is money!

SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGE

Step 1: Find a credit union or a bank that doesn’t support pipelines (Amalgamated Bank in New York just for example… but I love my Credit Union!! see if you can sign up for a credit union through your job! Shop around!

Or find local Black-owned banks and credit unions to support through a simple Google search!!)

Step 2: Close your account with banks supporting DAPL and Energy Transfer Partners (BofA, Citi, Chase, Wells Fargo, TD, pretty much all the big ones).

If you’re of a dramatic disposition, make a spectacle out of it! Film it! At the very least do take pictures and post them on social media #bankexit #nodapl #defundDAPL

Step 3: contact your branch representative and let them know exactly why you closed your account, because you can’t be a part of funding genocide, trampling Indigenous Land Rights, and causing irreparable damage to our air, water, wildlife, and climate.

Encourage them to see the light and invest in clean green energy projects, which are the future.

Again, what these people understand is money. Make investments in Fossil Fuel a losing proposition!

Step 4: Log on to DefundDAPL.org, where they are keeping track of how much money is being divested, and enter your total!! Every little bit helps!

Step 5: Keep fighting! Stay tuned! Keep learning!

And keep environmental racism and indigenous rights, from Flint to Standing Rock and beyond at the center of your environmentalism! 💥

2 Cities To Pull More Than $3 Billion From Wells Fargo Over Dakota Access Pipeline
In a unanimous vote, Seattle's City Council opted to pull city funds from the banking giant. Hours later, the City Council in Davis, Calif., followed suit.

Seattle’s City Council has voted to not renew its contract with Wells Fargo, in a move that cites the bank’s role as a lender to the Dakota Access Pipeline project as well as its creation of millions of bogus accounts. As a result, the city won’t renew its contract with the bank that expires next year.

The unanimous vote will pull more than $3 billion in city funds from the banking giant, the council says. Seattle says the bidding process for its next banking partner will “incentivize ‘Social Responsibility.’”

Not long after Seattle’s vote, the City Council in Davis, Calif., took a similar action over the pipeline. It voted unanimously to find a new bank to handle its roughly $124 million in accounts by the end of 2017.

Wells Fargo, the second largest U.S. bank by number of branches, just launched an ad that depicts two women practicing sign language before they meet the deaf child they plan to adopt.
