Best web technologies and tools for 2015

Web has certainly come a long way in last few years. We have technologies and tools that have changed the way we develop web apps. As the technology keeps evolving, we will see more improvements in the coming year. In this article I am going to list some of the best web technologies and tools that are going to make an impact in 2015 and coming days.

ECMAScript 6

ES6 is the future of JavaScript and is going to bring many new features. The good news is that the feature set of ES6 is already frozen and browsers have already started implementing the features. Tools like Traceur already allow you to write code in ES6 and then transpile it to ES5 so that it works in Today’s browsers. Furthermore frameworks like AngularJS and Ember are going to target ES6 in future releases. Given its feature set and popularity I think ES6 is definitely going to revolutionise JavaScript development.

AngularJS 2.0

Google’s AngularJS is one of the popular frameworks for developing Single Page Apps. The good news is thatAngularJS 2.0 is under development and this time it’s more powerful, better and faster. As Durandal, another popular SPA framework, is converging into AngularJS the combo is definitely going to make an impact. AngularJS 2.0 is also going to target ECMAScript 6 which means your JavaScript code is going to be future proof.

7 Web Series for the Literary Lover

It'a National Book Lover’s Day and what better way to celebrate than with a few literary web series? While there are a ton of amazing web series out there both literary and non-literary, we’ve selected some fan favorites and some you may not have heard of!

1. All For One - If the original musketeers were queer and female, All For One is what you’d get. Set in modern day unversity, this adaptation of The Three Musketeers features a fierce cast and mind blowing story to tell.

2. Carmilla - Perhaps the original Le Fanu novella is less well known but the web series sure as hell isn’t! Carmilla features a broody lesbian vampire, a non-binary character (LaFhooray!), lots of mysteries to solve, a determined detective far too curious for her own good and more!

3. In Earnest - Oscar Wilde’s play The Importance of Being Earnest comes to life in this modern day web series featuring a similar storytelling style that Wilde often used. The series takes old Victorian values and fits them into today’s modern culture. It features themes of romance, friendships and all that good stuff.

4. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries - Quite possibly the catalyst in the literary web series space, this modern re-telling of Pride and Prejudice really took the internet by storm earning them global recognition and becoming the first digital series to win an Emmy!

5. The March Family Letters - Louisa May Alcott’s classic book Little Women comes to life in this modern day web series following the March sisters as they capture their days via video to send to their beloved Marmie who’s away on deployment. There’s lots of laughs and cries to be had with the series that you won’t want to miss.

6. The Misselthwaite Archives - This modern adaptation of The Secret Garden follows Mary Lennox who moves to her uncle’s large and lonely estate after the death of her parents. She hates everything about her new home but after discovering the hidden glade where her aunt passed away years ago things start to get interesting!

7. The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy - With season three of this epic web series, The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy is perfect for any lost boy (or girl!) who loved Peter Pan as a child. We get to follow pretty immature Peter as he sets off to finally becoming an adult and dealing with all the drama that comes with it, including getting his best friend Wendy to fall in love with him.

Whoa! That background you just posted looks amazing! How did you go about making it? I'd love to learn how to do that!

thank you! it was basically a matter of taking a couple backgrounds i drew for slarpg a long time ago and using photoshop trickery on them

i started with these two. one is a simple cloud pattern made with tiles, and the other is a nebula pattern painted by hand

i combined the two in photoshop, shrunk them down to 50% size so they’d be more pixelated, and then used photoshop’s “save for web” feature to create a version with a limited palette and lots of dithering. anytime you see me do something with lots of dithering i’m generally using that. i ended up making two different palettes, seen here

i then took both of these palettes and combined them. i took one, rotated it 180 degrees, and placed it on top of the other with 50% transparency, resulting in the rainbow-y one seen below on the left. then i recolored it so it would be just pink and blue. i don’t have the PSD and it’s been a while so i can’t remember if i did that by hand or if i just used the gradient map feature in photoshop to automatically convert the color scheme

then i just added a star pattern on top, giving me what was my blog background for three years, as seen below on the left. when updating my theme yesterday, i messed around with a lot of different color schemes with different adjustment layers in photoshop. i’m pretty sure to get this specific one i made a solid pink layer over my old background and set it to “divide,” resulting in a bright blue background with nice lighting. then i just made it pink with the paint bucket tool

and there you go!

I’m making a bulletin board at my library to feature web series.  Any suggestions for my list?

(* marks those I have not yet seen but are on my to-watch list, ** means I’m currently watching it) I’ll be doing it this summer for next school year, so stuff coming out this summer is fair game. And it will be up all year, so…)

[EDIT: Italics are new additions to the list.  Also, I’m already going to run out of room, so unfortunately I’m not including series like Kissing in the Rain or I Didn’t Write This]

so for anyone who doesn’t recognize this man, his name is peter scully. he ran a website on the hidden web (also known as the deep/dark web) a website which featured movies scully filmed himself. the movies/pictures showed graphic scenes of torture, rape and even decapitation. most of his victims were under the age of two and killed live online, where people could pay up to 10,000 dollars to watch their demise. scully would force them to dig their own graves before he brutally murdered them. and the scariest part? it wasn’t him alone. supposedly, he had two female counterparts who lured, kidnapped, and brought the young children back to scully to be killed and tortured for money online. he was on the run for 4 years, hiding away in the philippines until he was finally captured in march of 2015

Do you guys have anything on a bugeishas (Japanese female samurais)? Such as Tomoe Gozen? If not, I believe it would be an interesting read.

Guy, singular. :D

And yes, Tomoe Gozen is in the book. The web has features on Tsuruhime Ohori and Masako Hojo, who may not count, depending on what you’re looking for.

And again, there’s a search function on the website, as well as a Google Maps interface. :)

People are complaining about a black Hermione and I’m just over here to remind everyone that the most perfectly cast Harry Potter feature ever was My Immortal: the Web Series which featured a black Hermione and an Asian Harry and everyone was more perfect than Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson and I will fight you about it.

Episode 1 of The Doula Is IN

The Doula is IN is a web series featuring Katy Collins, real life birth doula. During her online “office hours,” Katy discusses everything from periods to postpartum depression. Want to know more about pooping during labor? Got questions about your cervix? Need to know more about stimulating that sweet, sweet oxytocin? Katy Collins, doula to the Internet, is here to answer your questions.

This web series started when a bunch of female filmmakers in their late 20s sat down for dinner with a doula and realized that we didn’t even know what we didn’t know about our own bodies! Women usually don’t reach out to a doula until they are already in the birth process. However, as women in our reproductive years in a land where female anatomy has been made taboo, we need a doula NOW!

Direct all questions to doulaisin@gmail.com, or leave a YouTube comment!

- People thought you would just go one stupid, teenage date and then break up a few days later like most the couples in your high school. But, it was actually the total opposite and you’re probably one of the longest standing couples at Midtown High School.

-Because he’s (sometimes stupidly) smart, he can help you with literally any homework.

-Being one of the only people who know that he’s a vigilante.

-Getting to meet Tony Stark and his team (sort of the Avengers, but not really the Avengers) and getting to hang round Stark Towers whenever you felt like it.

-Pranking people. Prank calls and booby traps are kind of your trademark thing.

-Trying to use his webbing/watch thingy but failing miserably since Stark designed it specifically for him.

-Tony finding out that you couldn’t use it, and made you a sort-of matching one. (But without the webbing feature since he thought you would just use it to web annoying people to walls and leaving them there.)

-Lots of hugs.

-TV marathons - Your personal favourites are How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory and Friends. (a/n would HIMYM even be a thing in the MCU since Cobie Smulders is in both universes? hoe well)

-If you’re ever having a down day, he’ll take you to the top of a sky-scraper (usually the Empire State or the Chrysler) and just tell jokes for hours on end. There’s no point behind it really, but the cheesy jokes and amazing view can easily cheer you up.

Hope you enjoyed!
