Sweet-Talker

Or, How Bucky Won Over The Hammer Of Thor.

(Here on AO3)

Thor enjoyed the pleasant fragrances of Midgardian soaps. The one in the common-floor bathroom was labelled “Lavender Daydream” and was tinted a mild purple. It had a gentle floral scent with a slightly acrid undertone, and Thor wondered absently if Midgard had an actual plant named lavender, or if it was like blue-flavored drinks, with no non-artificial analogue. With Midgard, there was no way to tell. Regardless, it was a pleasing scent, and Thor would enjoy the soothing scent and gentle moisturizing properties of the liquid.

Midgard was such a fascinating world.

Thor toweled his hands dry and stepped out of the bathroom, intending to head towards the kitchen. Bruce had left some curry in the fridge, and Thor wanted to test his mettle against his perennial foe, the spicy pepper.

He took one imperious stride into the common room and tripped. He caught himself on lavender-scented palms, just shy of sprawling flat on his face on the carpet.

Sitting innocently in the middle of the hallway was Mjolnir.

Strange. He was sure he’d left his hammer on the sofa.

Do you by any chance have any tips for drawing weapons? My bitch ass wants to see Yuuri with a thigh holster, but I cant't figure out how to draw it properly, and I haven't seen any posts I could use as reference. Sorry if this bugged you, and I hope you have a nice day!

Oh, actually, I don’t draw weapons much either ^^;;;
My best advice is really to just google image things and look for references :D

Dunno if this is what you had in mind, but here’s a quick attempt XD
Hope you are having a great day as well~

The New Crystal Gems could be foreshadowing an imminent Lapidot fusion

In this episode, we see Lapis and Peridot working together to wash cars, using their hydrokinesis and ferrokinesis respectively.

This is the first time that we’ve ever seen their powers come together in this way - and it’s very effective!

Fusions bring together the weapons/abilities of the Gems that form them.  We know that Lapis doesn’t have a weapon, and we’ve not seen any evidence that Peridot can draw a weapon of her own either.  Could it be, then, that we’re seeing a glimpse of the Lapidot fusion’s ability in action here - namely, complete control over water and metal at the same time?

I think it’s entirely possible.

It’s also worth noting that this scene is yet another example of how in-sync Peridot and Lapis are with each other.  We know that one of the keys to a successful and stable fusion is harmony, and these two have it in bucketloads.

Eventually, though, this harmony is shown to temporarily break down…

…and they fight over who should be “the Garnet”.

It’s interesting that both Peridot and Lapis want to be Garnet - who’s a fusion that is “made of love”.  This seems very deliberate, and could therefore be foreshadowing that they themselves will also form a fusion that’s born out of pure love for each other, just like Ruby and Sapphire when they form Garnet.

There are already plenty of Lapidot/Rupphire parallels, and so this idea fits very nicely with these other parallels (which are discussed here: http://jenhedgehog.tumblr.com/post/151019168713/lapidot-the-garnet-parallel).

I’m not suggesting that the Lapidot fusion will be a permanent thing like Garnet - however, she may well be very “near perfect” in appearance and look closer to Garnet than to, say, Malachite; a fusion who was born out of pure hatred:

The Lapidot fusion being a Garnet-style “loving” fusion would therefore also create an interesting parallel for Lapis, who would have then been part of one of the best types and one of the worst types of fusion.

It would also exemplify the strength of the bond - and the love - that the pair of them seem to share.

I love your hero/villain prompts!!!! If it's not getting too boring, could you please give us some of the villain being cruelly loving to the hero like in the short prompt posted a little bit ago? (It's not fair of them to make you fight me) Thank you so much!!!

For reference, this prompt here because I am now mentally writing these next prompts as a sort of continuation/general same verse of the first prompt scenario. And I am never bored of interesting villain/hero or antagonist/protagonist dynamics - I’m bored of not being able to find them done well in books to a level that satisfies my reading cravings. It’s a hard life.

1) “I said that’s enough now.” The villain caught hold of the hero’s wrists as they tried to keep fighting, tossing their weapon aside, before drawing them close. Arms wrapping around them in an embrace that may have been comforting if it didn’t have the unyielding restraint of shackles. “There we go, easy now. You’ve been hurt enough for one day.”

Thrashing against the hold did nothing but exhaust the hero, and eventually they sagged. They sank together to the ground in a tangle of limbs, rocking slightly. You hurt me, they wanted to scream. This is your fault.

Shh,” the villain murmured - warned, they didn’t even know anymore. “It’s enough. You’ve done more than enough, you’ve fought so bravely, but just listen to me. There’s no shame in surrendering and living another day, alright?”

2) “If you really thought I couldn’t win you wouldn’t be trying so hard to stop me!” the hero snapped. “To make me doubt myself!”

“I’m trying to stop you because you’re going to kill yourself trying to fight me if I don’t,” the villain replied. “They’ll make you feel like you have to, and then take me breaking you as proof of my evil in the world. But we can’t keep doing this every time…” They began to advance. “You begged me to let you go, I did, here we are again and look at you. They clearly can’t take care of you. You deserve better.”

3) There was something to be said about power and pleasure. Any moron could inflict pain, for all the power it gave to them and certainly pain could be a useful tool - but it wasn’t this. The villain stroked their fingers over the back of the hero’s neck, kneading out the corded tension and dissolving it with the same gentle steadiness as they dissolved all other resistance.
“Poor thing,” the villain said. “Just relax, you must be so tired. So confused. So hurt, hm?”
Humans were never designed to fight what felt good to them. Pleasure had someone who was expecting a fight as disorientated as a baby bird that just hit glass. To make someone who loathed you melt in your hands..the rush of power was intoxicating.

So I just played the Witcher 3 game, and I was marveling at the fighting style Geralt uses. Obviously there are so many differences between that game and realistic swordplay, but the main one I wanted to know about was where you'd store your sword when you're not fighting. I know you've said storing a sword on your back isn't very practical, but what I'm wondering is where you'd store a long sword or a hand-and-a-half sword. Would it still be at the hip? Thanks in advance for the reply!

I love the Witcher 3′s combat system, so you get no arguments from me.

The sword is called a sidearm, you may have heard that term before in reference to handguns. It’s the same, the modern handgun has replaced the sword as a weapon but serves a similar purpose both functionally in combat and culturally. You wear it buckled on your hip.

For a weapon to function, it needs to be in a place that’s easily reached and at the ready. Whether it’s a sword buckled on our back or the staff we left in our room or the pepper spray buried at the bottom of our purse. A weapon doesn’t do us a lot of good if we don’t have access to it.

When you’re trying to come up with ways your character might store or what places on their body they carry their weapons, here’s some simple rules.

1) Accessible

2) Easily drawn

3) Nowhere that hinders

4) Sensible i.e. not annoying

The action of drawing your weapon, whether it is a knife, a gun, or a sword should be one smooth motion that transitions quickly into a defensive stance. If you’re about to be attacked or in process of being attacked then time is a luxury you don’t have.

On to the Witcher:

The Sword’s Path has a great breakdown on The Witcher 3 combat vs HEMA (Historical Martial Arts) fencing. I would give it a look. He talks a lot about the fundamentals of sword combat and how you could use techniques similar to what we see in the Witcher 3 but would actually work. He also does a great job of explaining the fundamentals and logic behind it. He’s got a nice video for beginners interested in HEMA with a great breakdown of the longsword and lots of resources.

I’d also checkout sieniawskifencing, a channel run by Sztuka Krzyżowa dedicated to the Polish fencing discipline called Cross-Cutting, Sabre Cross-Cutting, or Polish Sabre Cross-Cutting. Compare with Scholagladiatoria dueling with what will be probably be the more familiar 19th century British military sabre.

The Witcher 3 is a video game made by Polish developers. The games are loosely based on The Witcher series. The books are written by a Polish author, Andre Sapkowski and are basically the Polish Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. If you ever want to hear Sapkowski get testy about the video games, you can find it. (Read his books, you’ll understand.)

Both draw heavily on Polish history, Polish culture, Polish fairy tales/mythology, and the Polish approach to medieval/renaissance/longsword combat in their design rather than what we see from Western Europe like France, Germany, England, etc. They’re Polish. Sword combat in Western and Eastern Europe is not unified, it varies culture to culture, sometimes a lot within the same culture, and the limitation in HEMA is that its a historical reconstruction based on the sources available. The only documentation we have is from the people who bothered to write it down, and were lucky enough to have their writings survive. So, pointing to a historical text and saying “that’s how this German swordmaster did it” doesn’t help us that much when it comes to looking at Poland.

Geralt’s fighting style is obviously over the top and built on flourishes, but I remember seeing that The Witcher 3′s combat was based off a fencing style or there were fencers who consulted. I unfortunately can’t source it. However, if you look at Polish Sabre Cross-Cutting you may see some move sets that are similar even though they’re performed with a sabre instead of a longsword.

The combat in The Witcher 3 is not quite as far out of reach as you might think. It just needs a little tweaking and less spinning.
