The US Launched Air Strikes Against Syria To Punish It For Using Chemical Weapons
Thursday's military action came after a whirlwind week in which the US's policy towards Syria changed several times.
By Nancy A. Youssef

The US military launched strikes inside Syria Thursday in retaliation for the regime’s suspected chemical weapons attack earlier this week, marking the first US strikes targeting the Syrian government since its civil war erupted six years ago.

A defense official told reporters Thursday evening that more than 50 Tomahawk missiles were launched targeting Al-Shayrat air base in Homs, using two US Navy destroyers. The strikes, taken against the base where the chemical attack was launched, appeared to be largely symbolic in nature.

The US military has yet to say whether the initial strikes were part of a sustained campaign or an isolated attack. But US officials had signaled they hoped to launch a strike campaign that made clear that the use of chemical weapons is unacceptable but stopped short of further escalation.

Trump, who once vowed to not get involved in Syria’s civil war, ordered the strikes just 77 days into his term.

Fighter Week: New Magic Items

A list of magic weapons and items specially designed with fighters in mind.

Beacon of Heroism

Wondrous Item (neck), Rare, requires attunement by a fighter

A gold amulet with an amber gem clasped by a dragon claw. When you use your Action Surge, all enemies in a 40 ft. radius that can see you must make a CON saving throw with a DC of 15 or become blinded for 1d4 rounds.

Belt of Deflection

Wondrous Item (waist), Uncommon, requires attunement

A belt of deflection comes in three different materials, each with a slightly different property.

  • Snakeskin: The wearer has resistance to piercing damage.
  • Tiger Fur: The wearer has resistance to slashing damage.
  • Rhino Leather: The wearer has resistance to bludgeoning damage.

Cape of the Oracle

Wondrous Item (back), Rare, requires attunement

A knee-length, rectangular purple cape with intricate swirling patterns converging on a large central eye motif. The cape alerts the wearer’s intuition whenever an attack comes from their rear. Flanking attackers do not gain advantage on attack rolls against the wearer, and simply being behind the wearer does not grant advantage as if the attacker was unseen.

Deadfall Hammer

Magic Weapon (warhammer or maul), Very Rare, requires attunement

A heavy hammer with a head that looks like a giant ram’s horn, with the cross-section of the base forming the front face of the hammer. The weapon is treated as a +1 magic weapon. Whenever the attuned creature hits an enemy with the hammer, the creature must make a STR saving throw with a DC of 16 or be knocked backward 5 ft. On a critical hit, the creature is automatically knocked back 15 ft. and falls prone.

Deadweight Gloves

Wondrous Item (hands), Uncommon, requires attunement

A pair of supernaturally heavy gloves that look and feel like lead, yet are malleable as leather. While wearing the gloves, the attuned creature deals 1d6 base damage when making unarmed attacks with their fists. Also while wearing the gloves, spellcasters have a 25% chance that any spell that they cast fails. This damage does not stack with other bonuses to unarmed damage such as from a monk’s Martial Arts feature or the Tavern Brawler feat.

Energy Weapon

Magic Weapon (any), Rare

This weapon is wreathed in a set energy type chosen when the item was created. Variations include fire, cold, lightning, thunder, acid, poison, necrotic, and radiant. The energy is visible but can be dismissed as a free action. When the weapon’s wielder hits with an attack, the weapon deals a bonus 1d4 damage of the energy type.

Energy Burst Weapon

Magic Weapon (any), Very Rare

This weapon acts like an Energy Weapon (see above) but on a critical hit it deals 1d4 energy damage of the same type to all enemies within 5 ft. of the enemy struck.

Energy Blast Weapon

Magic Weapon (any), Very Rare

This weapon acts like an Energy Weapon (see above) except once per short rest, the wielder can speak the command word and use an action to fire a 60 ft. line of energy of the same energy type. Creatures in the area of effect must make a DC 14 DEX saving throw to try and dodge it. Creatures that fail their save take 8d6 energy damage or half that much damage on a successful save.

Extending Weapon

Magic Weapon (any melee), Uncommon

Once per short rest, this weapon’s range increases by 5 ft. for one round.

Gauntlets of Inevitability

Wondrous Item (hands), Rare, requires attunement

A pair of metal gauntlets studded with tiny claws on the back of the hand. They seem to guide your hands towards those trying to escape you. Creatures taking the disengage action to move outside of your threatened area still provoke an attack of opportunity as if they had not used the disengage action.

Helm of Blindsight

Wondrous Item (head), Uncommon, requires attunement

This bucket helmet has a single opal in the center of the forehead. The wearer has blindsight but only with a range of 5 ft.

Mimicfriend

Magic Weapon, Uncommon

This weapon in its basal form is a glob of silvery clay. With a command word, the wielder can cause it to change its shape into any nonmagical weapon that the wielder can imagine. Regular rules for proficiency apply when wielding a weapon. The weapon still counts as magical when taking the form of a nonmagic weapon.

Pauldrons of Wailing

Wondrous Item (shoulders), Rare, requires attunement by a fighter

These shoulder guards are made of iron and depict screaming ghouls with sharp teeth. When the attuned creature uses their Second Wind ability, all creatures in a 10 ft. radius must make a DC 17 WIS saving throw or become frightened for 1 round.

Rapid Weapon

Magic Weapon (any Finesse weapon), Very Rare

This weapon is bright silver and sparkles with veins of blue light. The weapon is treated as a +1 magic weapon and when the wielder lands a critical hit, the hit becomes a regular hit and then the wielder gains another attack immediately afterward against a creature within 5 ft.

Sandals of the Surging Waves

Wondrous Item (feet), Rare, requires attunement by a fighter

This set of calf-height sandals are patterned with undulating strips of tough fish leather lined with satin. When the attuned creature uses their Action Surge, an illusory surge of water follows you in your wake. Until your next turn, your movement does not provoke attacks of opportunity and creatures you pass through must make a DC 15 STR saving throw or be knocked prone.

Trueheart Crown

Wondrous Item (head), Rare, requires attunement by a fighter

A gold crown with a starburst motif at its front depicting rays of light emanating from a rearing lion. When the attuned creature heals themselves with their Second Wind ability, all allies within 20 ft. of the creature heal for an equal number of hit points.

Trifold Blades

Magic Weapon (shortsword, dagger, battleaxe), Legendary, requires attunement

This blade produces two spectral duplicates, one red and one blue, that float a few feet away from each other with a command word. The weapon itself is a +2 weapon. When the attuned creature makes an attack against a creature with the Trifold Blades, they may also choose to let the attack affect a creature to their immediate left and immediate right. The secondary attacks use the same roll as the original attack against the new targets’ AC. The shadowy blades can be withdrawn as a free action.

Wheel of Pain

Magic Weapon, Very Rare, requires attunement

This thin wheel has spikes emerging from its circumference. The wheel can be used as a martial melee weapon with 1d8 slashing base damage. The wheel can also be thrown up to 30 ft. away to deal similar base damage. Once thrown, the wheel spins wildly in place and obeys the attuned creature’s mental commands. The wheel can be moved up to 30 ft. as a bonus action on the attuned creature’s turn, attacking all creatures’ spaces it travels through. The wheel can only move in a straight line in this way. When the wheel attacks a creature in this way, it uses the attuned creature’s proficiency modifier plus their CHA modifier for the attack roll, and the CHA modifier for the damage roll. If not commanded in any way, the wheel spins in place and threatens the space it is in. The wheel will stop moving if the attuned creature wills it to stop, or after 5 rounds.

AU in which Lance is separated from the rest of team Voltron during a big battle and ends up crashing on a planet in a pocket of hyper dense space-time.

The crash leaves the Blue lion badly damaged and practically non-responsive at the bottom of the ocean, and Lance is thrown into the middle of yet another war that isn’t his own.

He starts off spending time slowly fixing Blue with whatever parts he can scrounge up, working as a mercenary to earn money for food and the more difficult to find parts.

Initially, he hopes that the others will be able to find him. He manages to set up a beacon to hail the castle (with a lot of help from some locals that had taken a liking to him), but as more and more time goes by he loses hope that they’re ever coming back.

It doesn’t take him much to theorize that they’re all either dead or captured, because even if they didn’t want to come and find him (Who would want to? It would be better if they found a new blue paladin, one with more to offer the team, he thinks to himself.) then they would at least need to come get Blue and his Bayard.

Without her there is no Voltron.

Without Voltron, the universe has next to no hope left.

After 3 months (Blue had been counting. She’s gotten good at waiting, but it’s always nice to know exactly how long it’s been) one of the warring countries gets wind of his talents and invites him to join their army. Invites from the other two followed soon thereafter, all of them easily able to see that he could be the key to breaking the deadlock they’d gotten themselves into.

After 5 months, he conceded and joined one of the armies. All the parts he still needed to fix Blue were rare and out of his price range, and he had sworn to protect her until his dying breath. He couldn’t let her fall into the Galra’s hands. He couldn’t let Voltron be used by those who sought to harm the innocent.

He’d fix her, protect her, even if it killed him.

He was a quick study in the art of war, winning fight after fight, battle after battle. But as he rose up the ranks, the death count on all sides dropped dramatically, much to the confusion of all concerned. By the time he’d become a General the battles were nearly bloodless.

Then the number of battles started to decrease. He enabled and encouraged peace talks between the countries, and by the time a treaty had been signed he finally had everything he needed to fix the Blue Lion.

It had taken a few years (She still counted, but he had long since stopped asking her to update him, lost in battle after battle) but they finally managed to leave.

When they re-entered normal space (not that they knew it until long after) the beacon that was still active down in the depths of Blue’s mechanics finally managed to make contact with the Castle of Lions.

Team Voltron hadn’t stopped searching for the Blue Lion or Lance since they’d disappeared.

And as they searched, they were slowly falling apart.

None of them had really realized how quiet the castle would be without him dancing around singing as he cleaned.

None of them realized he’d been leaving plates of food goo when they hadn’t eaten all day, carrying them back to bed when he could and giving them pillows and blankets when he couldn’t after they fall asleep in odd places, guiding them towards the showers when they’d been training and forgotten to change.

They hadn’t noticed that he had a knack for finding them and distracting them from what was worrying them, until they had a breakdown and had to piece themselves back together.

So, to say they were relieved when they located the beacon spewing out the Blue Lion’s energy would be an understatement of the gravest degree.

They’d been expecting to find the Blue Lion crashed on a planet.

They’d been expecting Lance to contact them as soon as they were in range, spouting off some tall tale of how he valiantly saved the entire planet single-handedly, rushing back into the castle where they could shower him in hugs and love and affection that he would ultimately be confused by.

They’d been expecting to reunite and have everything simply click into place.

They hadn’t expected to find the Blue Lion, deep scores marking her armour, with small pieces of what looked to be some kind of alien reef valiantly clinging on, to be flying at a breakneck pace through the depths of space.

They hadn’t expected both Lion and Paladin to be wary of the Castle of Lions, their audio only transmission fizzling with static as they demanded to know how they’d come to claim the Castle.

The tension in the air was palpable as the Blue Lion gingerly lowered her head and setting down her ramp, seawater gushing from various cracks and crevice’s.

They hadn’t been expecting to be greeted by a Lance far more subdued and soft spoken than they could have ever imagined. Despite this, he stood tall, proud (guarded, imposing) as he looked them over with a critical eye (judging to see if it were truly them, or some cruel trick played by whoever wanted the Blue Lion).

He was missing pieces of his paladin armour, decked in odd replacements and accessories, with a cape that shimmered like sunlight on a pool of water. His face scarred, his eyes heavy and wearing a ponytail of all things.

(Much later, he joked that it was kind of hard to cut your hair underwater with a blunt knife, and it almost felt like no time had passed)

They hadn’t been expecting the few weeks they’d spent searching to have been years for their Blue Paladin.

They hadn’t expected him to come back so different.

(He hadn’t expected them to come back at all)

tbh “the barn of new crystal gems” isn’t actually an awful concept if done right… like just. imagine peridot, bismuth, the rubies and jasper all living under one roof with lapis bunking there occasionally on her trips around the world. the barn just gets more and more added onto it until it is an absolute chaotic mess and everyone loves it.

  • peridot sticks the water silo into the wall and declares it to be her room. she even puts a keep out sign on it with a drawing of her gem on the door like the temple door. inside is ten screens all showing camp pining hearts, the alien doll, and a bunch of other bits of junk peridot has acquired. it looks like a mess but there’s a system to it. only peridot and amethyst understand The System.
  • eyeball suggests they build a training area to keep their skills sharp. her true motivation is to be buff and attract girls. jasper thinks it’s a fantastic idea and praises eyeball for her pragmatism. eyeball didn’t expect her plan to work so quickly but she’s sure as hell not complaining.
  • lapis’s room is the truck. it’s sticking out of the roof and has a tarp over it. there’s loads of meep morps in there. no one is allowed in. especially jasper and peridot.
  • navy has a greenhouse. except it’s a redhouse because she doesn’t get why it’s called a greenhouse if it’s not green and since she’s red she’s going to call it a redhouse. steven gave her cuttings from rose’s gardens to help her get started. one day she will probably go all little shop of horrors on the others.
  • the ruby ship got cannibalised for parts, but it’s still bigger on the inside and is now doc’s room. very serious things happen in this room. mostly viewings of baseball games so that doc and army can figure out how that game actually works.
  • leggy starts trying to figure out how the universe works and ends up making a library for them all to use. peridot, leggy, bismuth and navy start a romance book club. it meets in bismuth’s room because the silo is a disaster, the library isn’t private enough, and the greenhouse is full of weird plants. they draw fusions of their preferred couples. it’s all over the library. jasper’s eye twitches every time she sees it.
  • bismuth was put in charge of the warp pad because she needs to get to her forge. she upgraded everyone’s weapons. every week or so she’ll go to the others with “so i had this idea for improving our gear…” and if the person she talks to is peridot then the results are spectacular. once they tried to make limb enhancers for all of the rubies. including garnet-ruby because they didn’t want her to feel left out. garnet kinda BSOD’d when she saw them because on the one hand EMBARASSING, on the other ADORABLE, on the other OH NO SAPPHY THINKS IT’S CUTE…
  • jasper’s room is completely metal. she made it out of bits of the beta kindergarten. there’s metal bars and random things with spikes on everywhere. and a bunch of mirrors which she can flex at and practise looking awesome. eyeball joins her sometimes.
  • (i have accidentally made the ship of eyeball/jasper. idk it’d be cute???)
  • army insisted on having an actual baseball field set up. she still doesn’t understand the rules but she HAS branched out into other sports. sometimes when the others are being loud a football or hockey stick or something will come flying out of army’s room and hit someone on the head. her aim is impressive. bismuth is very proud.
  • camp pining hearts is a running gag with all of them. they are all SUPER into it for varying reasons. they had to write a treaty to stop the ship wars because the last one saw two rubies, bismuth and peridot all get poofed and that was REALLY awkward to explain to the main crystal gems.
  • centipeetle gets healed and joins them. she introduces them all to chaaaaaaaaps.
Klance Recs #2

A Kiss is a Kiss (But it’s never like this) by GibbousLunation (PG, 25k)
Summary: “How does this keep happening to us, every time.” Lance grumbled.

“You’d think they’d stop sending us on away missions,” he agreed. Honestly, between the poisonous plants of their last planet, and Lance’s tendency to always end up on the business end of every blaster or pointy ended stick, Allura was just being inefficient at this point.

Or, five times Keith kissed Lance but the situation was less than ideal, and one time Lance finally kissed him back. [5+1 Times]

supermassive black hole by epiproctan (NC-17, 7k)
Summary: Keith has always known that he wasn’t going to get what he truly wants out of the arrangement, but he also hadn’t ever imagined that it would just…end.

aka that classic fic where lance wants to stop hooking up but keith wants something else entirely [Friends with Benefits, Mutual Pining]

you never stood a chance by kagshina (PG, 12k)
Summary: lance to hunk ♡
>i’m gonna fukin die hunk oh mygod i sent
>keith a work out selfie that i wan supposed to fcukin send to you and you know what it said
>”BET YOU WANNA LICK THESE NIPS”
>HUNK I WILL NEVE BE ABLE TO FCE HIM AGAIN I WANT TO DI E

(Or, Keith is beautiful, Lance has a crush, and there’s lots of shirtless selfies) [College AU/Snapchat]

Love and Other Questions by squirenonny (PG, 46.6k, WIP)
Summary: One week after news of the Kerberos disaster broke, Pidge receives a new Mark–proof that Matt is still alive. She breaks into the Garrison to find him, only to find herself caught up in the fight for the fate of the universe.

Keith keeps his arms covered so he doesn’t have to watch Shiro’s scars compounding on his skin–but doing so means cutting off contact with his romantic soulmate, who greets him each morning with a new (and terrible) pickup line.

Shiro and Matt thought they were the luckiest people alive when they found out they were going to Kerberos together. But Shiro hasn’t seen Matt’s untidy scrawl on his arm in almost a year, and he has no idea if his soulmate is even still alive.

Save a Horse (But Also Spare the Cowboy) by Mytay (PG, 0.8k)
Summary: “Keith, did you just break out your Texas for me? Did you just make a space cowboy pun for me?”

“No. Also, the fact that bad jokes turn you on explains so much.”
[Space Cowboys]

Seven Minutes by LanceMcLame (PG, 2.2k)
Summary: Pidge never should have mentioned sleepovers to Allura.

That was the only thought in Lance’s mind right now, as he tried to make himself comfortable on the awkward nest of blankets, pillows, and sleeping bags. This was all Pidge’s fault. They’d offhandedly mentioned something about having a sleepover party once with their friends, and Allura had immediately picked up on the idea, insisting that it’d be “an excellent team-building opportunity”. And that was how the five Paladins of Voltron and the two Alteans had ended up building a sort of fort in the bridge of the Castle of Lions, and playing the most heinous game known to mankind.

Truth or Dare. [Team Bonding]

Your Love Has Shown Me Proof by freshia (PG, 22.4k)
Summary: “This situation is a bit more complicated than we initially realized.”

Lance raises an eyebrow, but Pidge is the one to question that. “Define complicated.”

Allura takes no more time beating around the bush, “Well, I received a transmission. Keith and Lance–from the future, that is–would like to have their daughter back.”

or: Lance and Keith deal with a walking spoiler, in the form of a little girl who just wants to get back to her own home. [Time Travel, Kid Fic]

dynamic by kagshina (PG, 13.5k, WIP)
Summary: “So, uh,” Keith starts, and Lance notices the way he shifts, like he’s not quite sure how to say what he wants to say. “How are we gonna…do this?”

Before answering the question, Lance makes a quick list in his head of things he should never do:
Ask the boy he has a huge crush on to be his fake boyfriend for the sake of proving a point (even if Lance thinks he’s going to say no, because apparently he might actually say yes!) [Fake/Pretend Relationship, WIP]

You stole a BABY?! by genericfanatic (PG, 24.3k)
Summary: The castle ship has a new stowaway, and Keith and Lance must figure out how to take care of them without alerting the rest of the crew. [Kid Fic, Accidental Baby Acquisition]

Rushing To Say Nothing by LynnLarsh (NC-17, 36.7k)
Summary: “What the hell was that?” Keith says, sounding strangely pissed. Probably jealous; whatever happened, Lance is a lucky son of a bitch and Keith knows it.

Coran clears his throat before answering, and when Lance finally pulls his eyes away from the crowd, that purplish blush from earlier has increased to a noticeable shade of violet across his cheeks. “It seems our boy Lance here has just been propositioned by the local brothel.”

A.k.a. That time Lance went into an alien brothel to prove a point and came out perhaps a little too enlightened.

The Little Things by fairietailed (G, 1.6k)
Summary: On Friday Hunk can hear the two of them behind him as they walk to the control room, and he swears he hears something akin to a kiss, and Keith whispering.

“That’s 10-7, Cargo Pilot. Try catching up.”

When Hunk turns around Lance is bright red, and there’s a foot of space between him and Keith.Or maybe he’s imagining things? [Secret Relationship]

Marital Mayhem by genello (PG, 26k, WIP)
Summary: Cornered by the Galra, Lance and Keith find shelter in a local temple. There’s just one problem—the natives seem to think the two of them are engaged. [Fake/Pretend Relationship, WIP]

Burning Love by TeaAndKittens (NC-17, 7k, WIP)
Summary: An injury sustained on the job for firefighter Keith means an extended medical leave that makes him feel useless and angry. He’s so desperate to get back to his crew at Station 5 that he’s almost willing to try anything - except yoga. Especially after Hunk calls this friend of his that owns a yoga studio and Keith gets supporting evidence for his claim that only crazy people practice yoga.

Somehow, despite all of that, Hunk and Shiro manage to bully him into at least trying it. He shows up for that first class expecting to hate it. What he’s not expecting is for Hunk’s friend to be hot like the fire of a thousand suns. Or even more insane in person.

Or: Keith’s life. So Hard. [Firefighter/Yoga Instructor AU, WIP]

if you’re ready by rhapsodyinpink (PG so far, 2k, WIP)
Summary: “Why was I wearing a wedding veil?” Lance asks, eyes narrowing in confusion.

“Oh wait..wait, shit! Shit! Did I marry a hot babe last night? Talk about a wild birthday!” Lance crows, waving his arms with glee.

“No,” says Keith. “You married me.”

In which the paladins visit Las Vegas for Lance’s 21st birthday, Keith and Lance get married, Allura goes missing, Pidge gets arrested, and Shiro goes to the spa. [Accidentally Married in Vegas - still in universe not au! WIP]

Summary: Lance tells his grandparents that he has a boyfriend to get them off his back, and is forced to ask his neighbor Keith to pretend to date him when they come with a visit. [Fake Dating]

seeing him for the first time (again) by breadpoetsociety (G, 1.5k)
Summary: “Who are you?” Keith demanded, excitedly putting his free hand to his cheek. “What’s your name?”

“Eat the cracker, Keith.”

“Did god send you? Are you an angel?” Keith didn’t look very frightened as this concept of being dead worked its way out of him. Lance ran a hand through his own hair, smiling wryly.

“Please, eat the cracker, Keith.”

“What’s your name?” Keith’s voice cracked, desperately, excitedly. “Please. Who are you?”

“My name is Lance,” Lance paused, nerves sitting uncomfortably in the bottom of his stomach– deep, in the part he never searched. He licked his lips and ran a hand through his unwashed hair. “I’m, um, I’m your fiancé.” [Amnesia]

On Thin Ice
by Minadora (R, 150k, WIP)
Summary: This multi-chapter fic chronicles the lives of a hockey player named Keith who gets forcibly enlisted into figure skating lessons by his brother, Shiro, to “work on his footwork”. Nancy Pelosi says Donald Trump has to fire Sean Spicer for “downplaying” the Holocaust

  • House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called on President Donald Trump to fire his press secretary on Tuesday for minimizing the Holocaust.
  • “While Jewish families across America celebrate Passover, the chief spokesman of this White House is downplaying the horror of the Holocaust,” the Democratic congresswoman said in a statement she shared on Twitter.
  • Pelosi took aim at White House press secretary Sean Spicer after he sparked backlash by saying even a figure as despicable as Adolf Hitler didn’t use chemical weapons on his own people, as Syria’s President Bashar Assad did last week. Read more. (4/11/2017 5:13 PM)

The group I DM for my hombrew game love to loot anything and everything that isn't nailed down. However, this makes it hard to give bosses cool/powerful weapons without them taking it and breaking the game. I've tried counteracting this by having them fight mostly magic users and monsters that use claws or fangs. It feels cheap though to just tell them "you can't have this because reasons" or having the weapon miraculously break after the fight. Any ideas on how to avoid this problem?

You could look for weapons that you know they’re not proficient in! I’m gonna try to cover as many weapons as possible, if this doesn’t help please feel free to send me specific weapons you wanted to use. Today, a week from now, a month, etc. I hope this helps! <3

Giant weapon: Literally too big to use/hold. You can take it, but you move at speed 10.

Smaller hand held weapon: It burns, its almost unbearable. 1d6 damage every time you pick it up. [e.g. if they put it in a sheath and take it out, 1d6 damage]

The item has a spell cast on it to return to its wielder, even in death. Its powerful enough to drag the player holding it back by 10 feet whenever they move away from it.

The weapon is sentient, and had a symbiotic relationship with the enemy. Your players have nothing to give, so it doesn’t want to work with them.

Book or wooden weapon: The enemy makes his items bursts into flames when he knows its over.

The items great power came from the enemy, once he’s gone the item returns to normal stats. [e.g. amputation knife cuts off limbs, limbs become under control of enemy and does 1d10 damage. but in your party’s possession, it just does 1d4 slashing]

Bow: The string snapped. its replaceable, but the string is what gave it its power. Unfortunate. Looks beautiful, though!

Whip: Spikes found along the whip were grown by the witch, who is since dead. With no spikes, it does less damage.

Ammunition: Looks like its already been used…twice? Its dangerous to reuse it. You can, but its not recommended.
